School Data-O-Rama
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here’s a new site I haven’t had a chance to fully explore. It’s put out by Standard & Poor’s, a division of the McGraw-Hill Companies, and claims to be “the largest easily searchable collection of education performance data ever assembled.”

It isn’t a real easy site to use, the data is now 18 months old, and it also didn’t work properly.

Amazed,
Please tell me how I am an educated fool? Is it because I speak the truth! I have yet to have anyone prove me wrong in terms of factual information. Again, GPA’s, SAT/ACT scores, Graduation Rates, School dropout rates. I have said it before and I will say it again, the TRUTH HURTS! Until you can provide information (FACTS) that prove me wrong, please keep your opinions to yourself. Thank you! I want every student to become successful in life, whether they are black white green yellow blue etc. These kids are our future. I do care about our education system, but lets not wear blinders and ignore the problems.

I’m with ‘worried’… not too impressive. I don’t care that the data is 18 months old… most site have 12 month old data. But no a lot of useful info. I like the NCLB pages better. I want to see other data like how many office referrals were there in a year? How many felonies were committed? What types of felonies (weapons, sexual assault, etc.)? How much gang activity is there? These are useful pieces of information to judge a school. Schools cannot be effective if the they are unruly and unsafe, no matter how good the teachers are.

Larry! What happened yesterday? what was up with all of that anger? Do you think someone broke things? DO you think a dog got kicked? OH MY WORD! IT was an illustration of several points.

The site was okay. Certainly not impressive, but it serves the purpose of telling you what the racial breakdown is of a school, the average income of the families in that district, and even the average value of the homes, which is helpful. It doesn’t tell you about gang activity or discipline problems, but a lot of that information can be determined in general by noting the socio-economic status of the people whose children attend. A lower average income and higher minority population will usually indicate a greater number of discipline problems and gang activity, since it seems to be more rampant in those communities where promiscuity, welfare and lack of parental involvement are the norm.

I heard teachers mentioned again in one of the articles. It seems that teachers have been getting some mention of blame in a lot of subjects. Teachers have been getting abuse from students for many years now and in the last few years teachers have been getting abuse from government, school systems, parents, etc. also. Old teachers have time invested in retirement and are stuck so we do not have to worry about them. But, we need to lay off the young teachers. I know of many who have plans to hang up the teaching profession because of the abuse. Think about it. I do not think we want thousands of well educated (most already with masters degrees), highly specialized in thier field, coming into the job market in your field. One of these so sorry teachers may be coming out of the education field to take your job or a promotion you have planned for in the future.

Good call, MC. 99.8% of the nation could not do what teachers do. People give them hell, but none of them could do a fraction of the job. Schools, to many, are a babysitting service, counseling center, police department and dozens of other things that they are not supposed to be. If parents did their jobs, school would only be a place for ONE thing… learning. I remember a comment in a post yesterday that “the teachers do not have the resources to find out why this child is acting out.” Guess what? It’s NOT THEIR JOB. There are TEACHERS… they are there to TEACH, not figure out why your kid is a turd.

RE: “LET ME SEE YOU—” This is a prime example of one of the most important reasons for a student’s failure. The parents refuse to take responsibily for their child’s behavior(s). By taking up for their child they are telling them that whatever they do is OK. But — Momma won’t always be there to take up for them. Then what?? They will end up carrying a knife or gun around. If these parents would teach their kids the very basics of manners and respect, I believe that our children would have an opportunity to learn. That mother should lose custody of her children if that is the best she can do. Shame, shame on her.
