Looking for a cheap date…idea…

Like most people, Blanca is feeling broke. Sure, I can pay my bills, but it doesn’t leave much fun money behind.

In an “ideal” world, this chica may not have to spend a lot of money to be wined and dined, but I do like to pay for a couple’s dinners or entertainment every now and again. (However, definitely not on the first date. If I guy lets me do that, I know there’s no future. That’s right, I said it!)

We’ve been writing recently about fun things to do on the cheap, but I’m looking to our MIA community for ways to save while living up the single life.

Once you get to know someone, you can have quiet, romantic dinners at home, but what about when you meet someone new? What ideas do you have for inexpensive, but fun dates?

And would you care if a new beau took you to Waffle House on your first date, instead of Bone’s or Aquaknox?

Brrrr! Morning all.

There is a whole lot of room between Waffle House and Bone’s or Aquaknox! I’d hope we’d able to find some middle ground.

If he was just like “Waffle House” for a first date like there is no other option, then yeah, I’d mind. I try to be flexible, but that’s just cheap and tacky. Not a way to but that best foot forward and sets a bad tone for the future. IMO of course.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden is a great cheap date. Admission is 12 bucks I believe. In addition to the maintained gardens, orchid house, and conservatory, there is also a large wooded area with walking paths and benches. Obviously, it’s probably not so inviting in the winter when weather is cold, but any other time of year is great. Weekdays are a nice time to visit, as it gets clogged with children on Saturdays and Sundays. They are closed on Mondays. Try it on a Friday afternoon, you’ll have the entire place to yourself.

MONEY!!!!….there are always free events going on…all over the city…if you like to drink….go have a couple of those for a first date…sweet tooth…go grab some coffee and doughnuts somewhere..breakfast is cheap…does not have to be waffle house…plenty of those around town…most of all folks have to use there imagination when dating….running is free…how many times to you speak to someone and the conversation turns to body image and they need to tighten or loosen…great lets go workout, walk or run…..its funny how too people that profess to have various interest or i can go from the hood to wherever cant come up with ish to beyond going out to eat or the movies….really who are we fooling with the marketing

Just to let people know the wooded area with walking paths at the Botanical Garden has been closed all year due to construction. With that said I would have to agree that it is a great cheap date spot. On thursday nights they are open late and have a cash bar with a nice selection of beer for $3.50. Although I think that this Thursday is the last week that event is happening.

When dating someone new I tend to let him set the tone. So he should select what he feels is appropriate and what fits his budget. But realistically speaking, if you can’t afford to date, then don’t.

Personally, I would not be offended if he chose something inexpensive for a first date, never know what the chemistry will be, so why waste money.

On a first date…I’m looking for a connection/compatibilty, not your bank account.

Good morning everyone! A first, nice, expensive date could be the Terra Cotta exhibit at the High, drinks afterwards (or before), and nice convo.

The only way Waffle House would be acceptable for a first date is if 1. We had just met, maybe at an event that lasted until say, 1am or 2am and he just couldn’t get enough of me so he suggested us getting something to eat so we could continue our conversation or 2. If we’ve had one of those “marathon” first dates that has pretty much stretched out the entire day and has rolled into the middle of the night. Waffle House would be cool as a last stop before we head home.

THAT’S IT.

Relevant topic today - New guy has suggested that we go out this weekend… Saturday and Sunday! He said it’s my choice on what we do and always one to be considerate, I tried to think of inexpensive things. So… Atlantic Station is always a good choice(even though it’s a bit nippy outside). They are still having the Open Air Market on the weekends with lots of vendors and artist. Volunteering to do something fun is a cheap (and heart warming) date (www.volunteermatch.com). Playdate and Paint-by-Numbers are pretty cool. There usually are tons of Festivals during this time of the year. Just search online for what’s going on in your area.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone else says b/c I need some ideas myself for this weekend.

i have actually had a first date at waffle house…it was my idea and i paid for it…however, this was after he’d helped me move some furniture when he’d just met me the week before…

we eventually went our separate ways after dating for two years…but i still think of him as one of the best boyfriends that i’ve ever had and to this day, think he’s a pretty great guy…we just had some major religious differences that we could not get past…

China Doll, that’s where I differ slightly. I need a couple convos with the guy before the date before we go out in public together. It’s best to knock the “interview” questions out beforehand before money is spent.

I’d rather do appetizers/tapas and drinks or even do a sports bar special then generic Waffle House. I like ambiance and atmosphere.

I’ve done coffee and ice cream dates too, but not normally on a first date.

Good Morning All,

Some one mentioned festivals and Atlanta has tons of them most are free..and you don’t have to shop you can listen to the local bands. Grab a cup of coffee and sit and get to know each other.

SexyCool I have gone on a 1st date to Waffle House, because frankly-I like it. Double Patty Melt plate scattered smothered and covered works for me.(Comfort food) I mean not every Waffle House looks like a truckstop.

Morning folks. Its nippy out.

How about Piedmont Park. It’s free and you can do some people watching. I met my last gf there. She was walking ahead of me and as I passed she asked about my dog. We did a lap of the whole park while talking and that was it. Such an easy meeting and it turned out to be 2 years of great fun.

Really, if you like someone you could do anything. Leggs that museum thing sounds good. The Silver Comet. Also the aquarium or Centenial Park. How about Home Depot Expo, I love going in that place.

I cant wait to take a chick to my dog training class. I’ll let her hold the dogs and let them go on the decoy. She’ll love it. One bite and she’ll be addicted. LOL

A chick I dated a few years back could kill hours playing Ms Pacman on Playstation. We were both real competitive. We also played connect four while having an alcoholic beverage. LOL

The cool thing is just having fun together doing whatever. If your with the right person you can absolutely nothing and have a ball.

Btw, sometimes I love greasy azz Waffle House or Checkers.

i agree with not every waffle house looking like a truck stop…especially if you leave atlanta…there are some really nice ones with a great OLD TIME DINER type atmosphere…dothan, alabama, chipley, florida, valdosta, georgia…and i could go on…i’ve obviously eaten at a LOT of waffle houses…

I do not know if gas is still an issue for some ppl…but the mountains in North GA are beautiful…the ride up is nice and the quaint little areas surrounding it are nice too…again, like mentioned in other post…there are lots of freebies in the ATL…festivals are great activities…downtown Decatur does a lot of stuff pretty much year round…Fuego in Midtown has a great wine tasting package, add the happy hours tapas menu to it…and it is really a very nice, but inexpensive date…ethnic restuarants are usually good and far less expensive than regular ones…Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Korean, just to name a few offer good food for little money…getting creative becomes essential…if there is no sense of outside the box adventure, then maybe it would be a dud anyway…lol

I like the Waffle House. There’s a new one in Smryna (EW Connector). I go there just for a double order of hash browns. Pretty clean. I do agree with Melo, no matter how clean, the workers always look trashed. Of course I’m only there late or on my way home so maybe it’s timing and the time of night. Just saying.

I have been out to a few Waffle House engagements…a lot of it just depends on what type of fun I am having with the person, etc…we could eat at Ruth Chris and if I was having a lousy time, then I would still want to leave…which I have done…I wonder how much stock we invest in quantitative vs. qualitative engagements…it just seems to me that so many factors would have to be assessed…little moments make a big picture.

Drive In Movie on Moreland Ave is best deal in town. YOU CAN BRING IN ALCOHOL $7 for two movies per person. -plus you’re gonna get some action for sure. When your date agrees to go there with you, she’s really telling you shes approving of you violating her for 5 hrs as long as you buy $7-9 worth of crap at the concession stand. Cemeeli, then you will need to date someone that has at least a few ounces of what’s dear to you. You’ll quickly find this out on the first date. If he loses you, NEXT…

Do you guys know that big tree at front of Piedmont Park? Not directly in the front, more to the side where most of the concerts take place and dogs and frisbees are everywhere. There’s this big tree ideal for a picnic. Too cold now, but grab a blanket, a picnic basket, scrabble, some wine and fruit. Great convo and great time will be had by both of you. Things like that are excellent first dates.

@Melo

It’s not self promotion, it’s a reality for a lot of people.

Yet, inherent in the ability to socialize across socioeconomic boundaries is the problem of finding someone that can relate as well.

To the extent that you have a babe with advanced degrees uncomfortable in Bankhead, she can also embarass you in a fine restaurant. She can order something, completely mispronounce the words, not know how the dish is prepared and have the waiter(ess) take it back due to her lack of understanding.

Or you could have a girl that is not comfortable in a evening gown (actually having to help her shop for it). She can embarrass you at a less than fine establishment by eating as if she hasn’t had food in days.

So, my friend, the ability to cross cultural lines has it’s drawbacks.

But that doesn’t mean that people are not able to do it.

You know Stone Mountain is getting ready(well first of the year) to open Snow Mountain park. That would be a cool first date..because you could see just how fun loving and laid back a person really is. The price of admission to the park (8 bucks) Then the price for the snow park itself. (25 each) Don’t balk at the price some of you spend that on drinks before dinner. Grab some hot chocolate or cider and relax.

@Truth If I met a chick that said she was too good for WH that would tell me everything I need to know about her.

Pretty much…I have met the type of ppl (men and women) who are like that…good eats do not have to cost a lot of money…and a good time is priceless…regardless of where it is to be had…I met a guy up here and we went to Ruth Chris…the entire evening sucked because he was such an arse with the waitstaff…another brother I met worked at IHOP and we went there for dinner…his conversation about his life, philosophy and his passion for music were engaging…now mind you, I am not seeing either of them as SO’s…but the point is that I had a far better time with the person whose budget afforded IHOP than the one who could afford the high end steak house…personality goes along way in creating a good time with someone.

Morning Blog Fam on this cold Wednesday!

Cee - Imma have to check that out, wink, thanks for the tip!

I love Waffle House or any breakfast place, yes I could eat breakfast all day! This is one of the things me & SO have in common. We love having “breakfast dinner”. This is a fond memory of my mother I have. We would go to IHOP for dinner with my younger brothers and would always order breakfast, usually after a day of shopping or hanging out.

Me & SO’s first date was at Ruby Tuesday. We had drinks & talked - both had too many butterflies to eat:)!

I agree there are wonderful things to do in this city that don’t require a lot of money or even great imagination. Just be open to having fun and doing something a little different than the norm and don’t look down your nose because someone is not dropping major money.

Some ppl are more flexible crossing lines of cultural differences than others…true…but a real person can be him or herself anywhere…period…some ppl just do not know how to act when they are out in public…period…and some ppl behave extremely well…period…having waited tables in the ATl for several years (in some rather nice establishments), I have seen it all…and most often it was less about money, credentials and perceived socioeconomic class than it was about just plain uncouth ignorance.

Cee - Okay, how did you know that fish & grits are my absolute FAVORITE! I must have said so on this blog at one time. And the shrimp would really set it off!

All you have to do is suggest something to me and I want it. Now I may have to go find some fish & grits somewhere at lunchtime, but that may be hard to do in Alpharetta!LOL!

Been there…done seen fools do that…tending like they know more about “haps” and going ons than they really do…one time I went to Azio’s in B’Head with a brother…I had been doing pizza and such there for years since I used to work at a restuarant across the street…never had a problem with service, food, etc…well ole boy ordered a glass of red wine (I ordered a chardonnay)and when it came to the table he cursed the waitress because it was room temp…which is how red is served…he told her that she just brought him a glass that someone else did not want and it had been sitting out…lol…then when the pizza came (spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, white mushrooms and sweet roasted garlic), he clowned because he said the tomatoes were spoiled because they tasted funny.

I third the drive in.

A great place to eat that is now closed was Eatzi’s. Great food and a fishmarket enviroment. The best.

Another pretty good spot for a newbie would be the premier outlets up 400. Alot of stores to view and its not that far. With gas this low I’m willing to front the gas money. LOL anyone want to ride? It cost me $45 dollars to fill up the other day.

In my days as a service person, had I been aware of such an issue…then I would have graciously insisted that he let me re-order his steak entree…most places do not have a problem with things like that…I did the same thing if a piece of silverware or a napkin hit the floor…get another one, pronto…once someone spilled their soup all over the table before they coud eat it…got another bowl…that is how good service works.

Truth How about Home Depot Expo, I love going in that place.

I haven’t been in there, but that may just be our next date stop. LOL! That man loves going to Costco. If we’re not doing anything specific, we’ll just go to Costco and walk every aisle.

I like food, so I’ll eat anywhere I like, even Waffle House. Agreeing with Truth again, if I’ve talked to a guy enough to feel that I like him, I’d go anywhere with him.

I was just talking yesterday to a guy friend of mine about Red Lobster. Technically, it’s a cheaper place to eat, but I love it. He asked me what my favorite restaurant was, and I said Benihana. But I followed that up with a Red Lobster as a close second. He was like “My wife loves that place! What is it with women and Red Lobster?” He said that it seems to cross all color lines, as the women at his job all love that dayum Red Lobster. I can’t explain it, but I’ve never not been satisfied when I leave there. Same with Benihana. They are my happy places.

Best inexpensive first date is:

  • walmart for some snacks & drinks; stop by the toy section and act goofy (females love to laugh).

  • block busters for a few movies; get 2 or three videos. A scary flick, comedy and romance.

  • Your spot or hers (you should have made a connection and had good conversation with the first to stop) if all works out right you will be going to the waffle house for LUNCH lol…

Works for me (i’m very cheap because i have a $2600 mortgage)…

Good Morning to all…

Cheap dates…use your imagination. How cheap are you talkin’.

Take a look through Creative Loafing. That was my favorite thing to find out what was going on in the ATL. You can find some free stuff on there.

There are 1/2 ticket places at underground Atlanta & Lenox Square Mall. I got the Mrs. some tickets to see “Wicked” from there as a birthday present. She went with her girls and had a ball. You can get cheaper tickets to Zoo Atlanta. (They have a new baby Panda). If you want to do a movie, Starlight drive-in isn’t bad plus you can make a picnic lunch.

Heck, this weekend is supposed to be in the 70s again, why not go to the park and picnic? That is the joy of the south. We are getting the snow that the NE is getting right now.

There are tons of things to do that don’t bankrupt you. Even Dave and Buster’s has eat and play deals right now. The economy isn’t good, so places are trying to entice folks.

Melo

As far as the early voting, the Georgia code (statute) does not allow for weekend voting. Also, unlike NC & Fl, GA has been open for voting since the end of September. That is over a month of opportunity. While I may agree with the sentiment, the law does not allow it and the state made attempts to accomodate those who want to vote with 6 weeks of voting opportunity. I am voting tomorrow morning. I’ve got classmates that voted in September.

Truth We also played connect four while having an alcoholic beverage. LOL

Playing Jenga while intoxicated is fun too. I’m usually the best in the room at Jenga, but he kept up with me. Though I was about 4 times more inebriated than he was (former Marine, he can drink a Lake Lanier full of Heneiken), I still won. It’s the engineer in me.

I played Drunk Jenga with a bunch of engineer friends of mine once. That dayum game went on for over an hour and it was taller than me when it finally fell. Tip: Never play Jenga with engineers or architects if you have somewhere to be later.

Squeezul I second the Starlight. Two movies for $14? Stop by the new Sonic down the street and make a night of it

They have a new Sonic down the street? Okay, I’ve been wanting a Chili Cheese Coney for about three months now, and have successfully been talking myself out of it. Now it’s ON!!

Question My truck has automatic lights. So if it’s running, the lights are on. If I switch to the park lights, the rear taillights are still on. I want to go to the drive-in, but I need the heater running (and the car on) cause it’s cold. How do I get around that? The manual doesn’t say.

Trust me…he was not a wine drinker…a merlot does not need to be chilled…some light reds may need a chill, like a Chianti…but deeper, robust reds (Zinfindels, Cabernets, Merlots) DO NOT…cellar temp and fridge temp are two different things…so no, he did not know jack about drinking a robust red wine..I waited tables for several years…we never chilled the reds…in fact, one of the reasons reds are more popular in European countries is the fact that they can sit out at room temp…areating a deep red enhances its subtle flavors…chilling it kills them.

The only Underground suggestion that I made was the 1/2 ticket place. It is on the top. You can get tickets to shows at the Fox and other places around town. It is kinda like NYC’s TKTS spot. They also have a kiosk in Lenox.

We have been seen many a show at the Fox including Dreamgirls in 2002 with Jennifer Holliday, recently we saw that Mama Mia (the play with Abba music) and the wife saw “Wicked” last week. All courtesy of 1/2 priced tickets.

First dates should be indicative of first conversations. There had to be some likes and dislikes discussed. Most first conversations are all about what a person likes to do. So integrate that into the first date w/o being predictable. It can be done. I told my SO that I loved to laugh and have a good time. He took me to see Katt Williams for our first date. I remember the first time a date took me to eat tapas. I was not familiar with it, but quickly realized what was up when I read the menu and observed others. We had the tapas, sangria and watched the salsa dancers - it was a great date. I did not embarass myself trying to flex about something I was not familiar with.

It’s best to just chill and observe if you find yourself in unfamiliar settings. I’ve even admitted that I did not understand something to my dates. For example, if you are at a fancy dinner and don’t know what fork to use, wait and see what everyone else does. Anyway, be honest that you’ve never experienced something but are open to try and you will get a whole lot more respect instead of looking like a fool!

Waffle House is live tv, people. There’s about a 50% chance of drama unfolding when the waitress calls the order wrong or ain’t pickin up her plates fast enough. But the chef walk offs make for the best episodes…

For this time of year I’ve heard the corn maze out past/near Woodstock is cool. And what about all the Haunted houses - that’d be a good reason to get hugged up. Then there are plenty of Fall foliage trail walks offered too. A nice drive, a nice stroll, a nice lunch. And probably a nice lil bout of the Itis, but that’s okay — just call shotgun.

We can endure feeling that another person has more talent, or more money, but the sense that a rival is more desirable than we are—that is unbearable. In the early eighteenth century, the Duke de Richelieu, a great rake, managed to se¬ duce a young woman who was rather religious but whose husband, a dolt, was often away. He then proceeded to seduce her upstairs neighbor, a young widow. When the two women discovered that he was going from one to the other in the same night, they confronted him. A lesser man would have fled, but not the duke; he understood the dynamic of vanity and desire. Neither woman wanted to feel that he preferred the other. And so he managed to arrange a little ménage à trois, knowing that now they would struggle between themselves to be the favorite. When people’s vani¬ ty is at risk, you can make them do whatever you want.

Someone mentioned the High as a cheap date…having gone there recently, I assure you it ain’t real cheap. $18 each for adults, $12 in parking to get in the door. That’s $48 if you don’t have a single drink or any food inside. If you get suckered into eating at the restaurant there, be ready to drop another $70-80. Say you go to Friday nite Jazz and each have two drinks—that night cost you $75, and you didn’t have dinner. By Ruth Chris standards, that ain’t bad, but for a first date? That ish better be made of gold…and you better be able to hold those gold bars.

@Truth

tapas is the Spanish word for top…back in the olden days many taverns would have red wines sitting on the counters awaiting a customer to purchase a glass…well, flies, bugs, etc would find their way into the glasses of open wine…so, they started cutting round slices of bread to cover the glasses…eventually, when ppl pick up the glass of wine, they put cheese, meat, something on the bread and ate it…a no waste thing…eventually, a entire culture of Spanish cuisine developed from this practice of placing tapas on the wine glasses…usually, they are small portions of food (think hor d’oeuvres size amounts)…when I worked at Babalu in downtown Decatur, Felix had the best…but Fuego is pretty good with their selection too…it is a reall pop culture epicurean pursuit as of late.

Yeah Chink, Hawaii was great. A lot of my friends didn’t really appreciate it there. Said it was boring (BS!) The only reason that they were bored was because the only thing they ever did was go to the country bar on base and drink all night. They didn’t try to go out and see what the island had to offer. They would always say it was too small there, but even so, it still is a lot to do there. A great thing to do there is to hang out with the locals also. I used to hang out with them about as much or even more than i hung out with my military friends. Drinking some nights was cool, but in a place like that, you have to get out and do more. Who knows if we will ever get the opportunity to go to a place like Hawaii again. 4 years out there and i never said i was bored. And the best part is that i was stationed on the ship with one of my cousins.

Some of it is human nature…we do not see the forest for the trees, so to speak…but some of it is just fear and ignorance…I like trying new and different things…it has helped me to become a very well-rounded person…but I know some ppl who will just not venture outside of their defined box…I have an acquaintance that did 2 stints with the Navy…he traveled the world and went to many foreign countries…but he was a product of segregated Jim Crow South…so, he confined himself to only doing what ppl like him did (i.e white and male and american)…so he never discovered the cultures, the histories or anything about the ppl in those countries…his ignorance and fear of the other being different stifled his courage to step away from what he had been taught and try to learn something new…what a waste of travel and experience, IMO.

I wouldn’t mind going back to a ship, but i know that my girl wouldn’t like that at all. Afternoon Folks!

Cemeeli Hey lady! Ummm, can you make me some of that tilapia, buttery grits and shrimp as a Welcome to Atlanta meal? I love my Wii Fit. I use it almost every day - when I miss it makes little smart-azz comments like ‘I guess you were too busy to workout yesterday…’ I ordered a Jillian Michaels DVD for it and it came yesterday. I haven’t tried it yet though. Sorry the little dude doesn’t like it.

Jadrien I’m not even overseas but I know what you mean about missing your favorite spots.

Some of my ‘cheap’ faves: Busy Bee (I wish they were open on Saturdays), Thumbs Up, Waffle House (they are few and far between here) and Sweet Tea. I was shocked to learn that sweet tea isn’t a staple here and the places that do serve it don’t make it right.

Speaking of Hawaii - anyone been to the Pro Bowl before? I’m going in February and I’m looking for a little advice on how the pregame activities work (fastest man contest, etc). I know I’ll have a ball because it’s in Hawaii.

I used to like to go around and out in the town and learn about the culture and then at night, party with the local people. You’re right, that is a wasted experience going to a foreign place and not making the most of it.

m’karyl - I agree, a complete waste of travel! You give me the opportunity to travel to exotic locales almost free - my bags are packed and I’m taking in everything each place has to offer. If you’re going to do the same thing day in day out, just stay home!

I cannot stand people who won’t leave their comfort zone for a minute, even when other factors, like money & opportunity are not standing in the way! I have a hatin’ friend who is like that. I love her to death, but her close-mindedness gets to me sometimes. She does not like to try different foods and her repetoire of that she does eat is limited to what she grew up eating! We have been out to BUFFETS at fine restaraunts and at friends’ homes. Now what better opportunity to try something different than a buffet? She won’t do it. Her usual excuse is that she does not want to order something new and not like it, therefore it goes to waste. But at a buffet you can try a little and if you don’t like it, you’re not wasting much. She still won’t try, and even brags about it like it’s cute. She stays in her box but complains that her life is boring. Like me, taking martial arts - she acts like she can’t believe I’m doing it and makes little jokes about it, picking on me. Or, I used to be not up on the latest tech gadgets and for years had a prepaid phone. Now I have about the equivalent of an iPhone and she snickered about that. You only get one life and this is not a dress rehersal. Live it to the fullest!

Bankhead Seafood is really small, but always has a line out the door. **I think that fries are just a myth because they never have any when I go. Buckhead, you need to stop…but it be true…that is the clientele…gay men and old ppl…lol…and I guess it depends on which barkeep it working…I always like any barkeep that gives me a more hefty pour for my $$$$ (1,2,3,4,5,6)…now that is a good shot for the buck…but it still has good eats…if you can not or do not want to cook it for yourself.

Beautiful used to serve some of the best beef bbq ribs ever.

And I have always foudn that “hole in the walls” are some of the best eats…there is a place here called Charlie’s Grill…best breakfast for the buck…ambience is cool…but good eats rock!!!

Kym - I love that song!

I went to the Beautiful a few months back. I usually hit it about once or twice a year. Still the same, foods great and you can’t beat that its open 24 hours. Busy Bee is off-the-chain too. Nothing like those old spots in the hood! I dated this dude that was going to grad school at CAU. He was from San Diego. He LOVED the Beautiful. He took his parents there when they came to visit. They came through for some business convention and since we were talking marriage, both sets of parents met up with us for dinner. Guess where they wanted to go? I picked them up from their hotel(Marriott Marquis) for lunch another day and guess where they wanted to go? LOL!

I went in the Beautiful one time to get a to-go and this group of old men were sitting at a table near the door, eating and hanging out. It seemed to be their meeting place. They spoke to me and mildly flirted, but they were so respectful.

Good people, good times.

Mo I go to Sweet Tomatoes at least once a week. There’s one near my job here and I always have a coupon when I go.

PoppaG I went to the Marietta St Thumbs Up the last time I was in ATL. It was on a Saturday morning and it wasn’t packed at all. I suspect folks have caught on to that location since then. I don’t know if it’s just me, but the food taste better at the East Point and Marietta St locations. The last time I went to the one on Edgewood, I was disappointed.

Oh and I forgot to add Six Feet Under to my list. That and Chow Baby, although I haven’t been there in a real long time.

M’karyl/Kimmie I was in Germany for 3 years and you’d be surprised how many guys barely went downtown. They stayed in the baracks or on base and did jack. The thing was they were giving away travel for free to soldiers. I went to Paris for 4days/3night for $49.00. WTF?? That included hotel. Amersterdam was $69.00. I flew to Italy for $10 on a military hop. The world was wide open to us and some passed. I bet those cats are kicking themselves right now.

I used to tell folks they could drop me anywhere in the world and I’d get back home. I was an international youngen. I still have a copy of my international license I had over there. Now there are only 3 more places that intrigue me, Japan, Vegas and Egypt. Btw, I had a chance to hit Egypt for 7 days for $999.99. I couldn’t make that one though.

I knew T.I. was a native when he was asked in an MTV interview about his favorite restaraunt and he answered “Chantrelle’s”.

  • In the same show about ATL called “My Block”, Jeezy answered Q-Time*

I wasn’t a big fan of Q time, though. Maybe I don’t need to compare it to Busy Bee.

It was our first time ever playing together (i didn’t even know he could play), but we won our first two tournaments before they messed up our team and kept putting me on watch during the tournament. They didn’t give us any medals for winning, but we did win some cash. My last tournament on there broke my heart though. I lost in a tie breaker to one of my best friends in the finals (we had both won two tournaments a piece). Until then, i had bragging rights over him because the two tournaments he won, i wasn’t able to play in and i kept telling him that he never beat me, but he finally did. But, i’m a good sport. LOL. I was asked before that if i had a chance to go back before i joined the Navy, would i do it again. I said yes because i have experienced things that i would have never even thought of before. Poppa I’ve eaten at the Colonnade, but I felt like I was in a live production of “The Golden Girls”. I was looking for Dea Arthur & Betty White.

Nah, I think they hang out in Picadilly. Now I loves me some Picadilly sweet potato pie, but I have to get it to go. If I stay in there too long, I feel like the patrons are scheming to steal my youth.

I also love Zesto’s on Ponce. One of my girls introduced me to that place years ago when I used to get my hair done near there. They have the BEST hamburgers and fries. They are famous for their ice cream, but I don’t think I’ve ever had any there.

Please Note

They’ll be watching us on November 5th for signs of the end of times.

To keep the peace and keep a lot of folks from getting nervous, I think we should develop a list of acceptable celebrations and behaviors we should probably avoid - at least for the first few days:

  • No crying, hugging or shouting “Thank you Lord” - at least not in public
  • 2 No high-fives - at least not unless the area is clear and there are no witnesses

3 No laughing at the McCain/Palin supporters

4 No calling in sick on November 5th. They’ll get nervous if too many of us don’t show up. (Try to be on time and not your normal late arrival)

5 We’re allowed to give each other knowing winks or nods in passing. Just try to keep from grinning too hard.

  • No singing loudly, We’ve come this Far By Faith (it will be acceptable to hum softly)

  • No bringing of barbeque ribs or fried chicken for lunch in the company lunchroom for at least a week (no chittlings at all) (this may make us seem too ethnic)

  • No leaving kool-aid packages at the water fountain (this might be a sign that poor folks might be getting a break through)

  • No Cupid Shuffle or Electric Slide during breaks (this could indicate a little too much excitement)

  • Please no Moving on Up music (we are going to try to remain humble)

  • No doing the George Jefferson dance (unless you’re in your office with the door closed)

  • Please try not to yell——BOOOO YAH!

  • Just in case you’re wondering, doing the Running Man, cabbage patch, or a backhand spring on the highway is 100% okay.

  • If I’ve missed anything feel free to add to the list. I just want to make sure we’re all on the same page when Obama brings this thing home on November 5th.

Now go get your early vote on and let’s make this thing happen!!!

Truth - I have an uncle that was career Army. When he was stationed in Germany my grandparents went over to visit. He took them to Paris, Holland, Italy and of course, all over Germany, even took a tour of the concentration camps. I think they went to London too. They had the time of their lives. A lot of their neighbors in little Thomasville GA had never been on an airplane, much less Europe. I’m so happy they had the get-up-and-go to take advantage of that opportunity my uncle was able to share with them. My grandmother still talks about it now after all these years.

Kym, i am a native and under 30, but have also been away for a long time. But seems like another place i have to go to whenever i do go back to Atlanta (whenever that will be).

Truth, i’m taking my classes with Central Texas College. I’m trying to finish my associate’s degree before I leave from Bahrain, but still waiting to see what they are counting on my transcript. It’s some things that I get credit for just for military experience (like rate and rank advancement and boot camp for P.E. credits), but that is stuff that i am working with the college rep out here about. She is really trying to see me graduate before i leave here.

You know these business could save us all alot of time if they just open a big ole flea market like food court. Want some fish with your ribs Hit up The Butcher for ribs then Bankhead for fish, get some Lemonade from Chik-fil-la and round it out with a sweet potato or peach cobbler from the Beautiful. If you want us to be healthy but a damn gym at the end of the market..we will waddle or take a scooter that way when we done eating.

Rell - I totally forgot about EATS! Yes, very good cheap food, relaxed atmosphere. Clientele looks like students, hippies. Someone mentioned Home Box - used to love their wings! Anybody remember Pilgreens on Lee St? Steaks bigger than your plate!

I’m going to write all these places down and start suggesting we hit them from time to time again and support the locals. A lot of times I get disappointed with the new little “hip” places - cute atmosphere and decor but lacking in the history and character of the old stomping grounds and the food leaves much to be desired. I grew up in the SWATS and used to hang out in the AUC with family that worked/schooled there. Also worked there summers myself. Would not trade growing up in the A for anything, this is all bringing back good memories!
