Emotion commotion

With all this talk about emotional cheating last week, I started wondering how important we think the emotional aspect of a relationship is. For example, one blogger last week wrote:

If there are actions following the thought, then the behavioral implementation of those thoughts is cheating. If the thoughts never yield any action, then you haven’t cheated.

There’s something to be said for this argument. But I present the following: If I show up in a bank and am fiddling with something in my coat pocket, am searched by a security guard who finds a gun, a demand note for money, rope, duct tape and other items I would need to secure victims, I’m guilty as crap. I haven’t actually robbed the bank yet. But I was clearly going to. Just my being in the bank with those thoughts and some minor groundwork constitutes some sort of intended action.

Now, if I was at home thinking about robbing a bank, but going nowhere near the institution, there’s no way I’d be arrested, because I’m away from the premises. It’s one thing to think the occasional passing thought about someone other than your SO, but it’s another to be spending lots of time (in the presence) of that person with those thoughts.

But enough about the cheating. How emotionally driven are we when it comes to relationships?

When you begin relationships, are you usually beginning with a base of the physical, the emotional or the spiritual? Have you invested in someone emotionally or spiritually for a long time first before getting something started, or do you start with attraction and invest emotionally later? If you have done both, which method had yielded better results for you?

Can you maintain a physical relationship with someone if you’ve been emotionally disengaged for an extended period of time?

If our emotions are subject to the wind (as was suggested last week), then how good of an indicator are they for when we’re really in love? Can we bank on emotions driving our decisions if they’re subject to change?

I would say most relationship start with physical attraction. And from there getting to know the individual builds the emotional and/or spiritual bond. After all of that is in place the relationship if it is going to work has to be controlled by logical thinking.

My emotions, my passion, ignites me but my common sense governs me. Haven’t always been that way but I have grown. Or rather am growing.

Morning, everyone. :-)

“When you begin relationships, are you usually beginning with a base of the physical, the emotional or the spiritual?”

I normally take the “inside-out” approach in that I’m more focused on finding out what truly makes a woman the person she is. So, I guess you could say I place more emphasis on the spiritual, while allowing the emotional and physcial to take its natural course over time. I’m a firm believer that a relationship built on the “inside-out” approach is more likely (not guaranteed) to be more substantive and lasting than one not built that way. But, that’s just me.

Different types of ‘Ships

  • physical—>end
  • physical—>emotional
  • physical—>emotional—>spiritual
  • spiritual—>end
  • spiritual—>end
  • spiritual—>emotional
  • spiritual—>physical—>emotional
  • So on and so forth…Personally, I like to establish some sort of friendship with that person, get to know them first w/o acting on my natural lust-filled physical urges. That way if we do get down with the get down, we can at least still be friends…which at times works out pretty well because you’ve both now gotten that physical tension out of the way of a real friendship.

Morning Ya’ll I always believe things happen according to people’s individual circumstances. With that said, I think a successful relationship can result from either a physical, an emotional, or a spiritual attraction. Some optimal (for you) combination of the three have to be present for a successful relationship, but like combinatorics order doesn’t count.

Darrell I always enjoy reading your comments however I don’t care what kind of turn, twist or spin we put on it there has to be an initial attraction factor. No one looks at a person at first glance and says wow they have a beautiful personality. There is no way of knowing someones personality or spirituality without uttering a word to them.

Be it the expression on their face, the sway in their walk, or the flutter of their eyes it is something physical 9.99999 times out of 10 that gets your attention. After then you decide if you want to get to know the person rather beyond the model.

Good morning everyone. I can honestly say that I don’t always go with the physical right off the bat. Mental stimulation can be extremely captivating to garner an emotional connection. Now, when there’s both, viola! I’d rather get to know you. There are times when the physical attraction is quite apparent until you learn more about the person.

Good morning all. pisces, mail call back at ya.

I require all three. In meeting folks in the real world, you are going to be physically attracted first, at least initially. Now I’ll strike a convo up with most anyone, but I won’t naturally think it’s anything more than convo unless you try to holla. If I didn’t find you knee shakingly attractive, but you’ve given me some mental stimulation, we can definitely get to know each other better.

I’ve dated guys who bring looks and not much else to the table, as well as guys who could carry a conversation and not much else and I realize I need a good balance of all three. The actual ratio will vary.

    good morning good ppl

darrell i for one love your consistentency!…. tho i do take issue wit it every-now-n-then :)

    on topic

i agree with raqi initially its always a physical thing. something about them intrigued you enough to want to get to know them on a more personal level. i attempt to gauge the mental capacity of a person above anything else. if you dont have the intelluct, it doesnt matter what you believe religously, and it stands to reason that emotionally you arent likely to be adept outside the basics. in the intial conversation, i am looking to gauge your ability to converse on a real…. a meaningful level. if your cursory comments/observations lack thought, depth or mor-n-portant wit, i have to keep it moving. cause boredom is my kryptonite.

Thanks, Raqi. I enjoy reading you as well. :-)

I have to say that I generally consider myself a fairly good communicator, but when it comes to this topic, people seem to always misinterpret what I’m saying.

I’ve never said that physical attraction isn’t important, but people seem to quick to respond as if that’s what I did say. What I have consistently stated is not that physical attraction isn’t important, but that it isn’t as important as making that spiritual and emotional connection with someone. I seem to have to keep reiterating that point for some reason.

Someone asked me on this very blog a few weeks ago if I’d ever dated a woman who, generally speaking, wouldn’t necessarily be considered “attractive”. My response was “Yes, I have. In fact, I married her.” Of course, physical attraction has its place. I’ve never debated that nor would I. We are wired to take that into consideration in choosing a mate. That said, however, the fact is that as it relates to me, I’m not going to “disqualify” someone simply because I’m not physically attracted to her; especially if that someone is the person God has ordained me to be with. “And just how would you know that?”, you might ask. Well, I’d know it in my heart, that’s how, because the heart will sometimes help you see things your eyes have blinded you to.

Again, being physically attracted to someone is important but, as for me, it’s not a deal-breaker. There are deeper things to consider.

Now if I meet a guy who is totally hot and I am just looking for lust factor and a booty buddy..then of course. Since I never had feelings for you there is no love lost or gained!

    Good Morning All,

When you begin relationships, are you usually beginning with a base of the physical, the emotional or the spiritual? Physical…see first..talk later

Have you invested in someone emotionally or spiritually for a long time first before getting something started, or do you start with attraction and invest emotionally later?

*Attraction is physical first, the more I know you and I mean really know you then the more willing I am to emotionally invest in the relationship with you. Time is not a factor..a long time for some is a short time for others. *

Can you maintain a physical relationship with someone if youve been emotionally disengaged for an extended period of time?

I am assuming this is the whole sex without emotional investment and yes I can..and have. Sex is the physical act. It doesnt require emotional feelings to have sex..but to have really great sex..and not just the animal lust then you need emotionally attachment to achieve that. **

    For what would we be?

I’m one that follows my emotions… First emotions (not just looks, signals, nor wants nor needs…)…

trusting your heart… to me… is what matters… as even false signals show up…

Another Valley Girl flashback, huh? LOL!

    By BennyB

    April 15, 2008 11:15 AM | Link to this

I was a high school junior the first time I had an emotional connection with a woman; she was tall with long legs and long hair. She has an angel face, snake eyes and an inviting behind. She was easy, she did not know that water was a compound, did not know what she wanted to study in college and did not have any ambition or any enthusiasm besides getting boys attention. This girl was neither religious nor spiritual, she did not know how to cook anything except in microwave, she did not read any book except those signed by Eric Jerome Dickey or Zane, she did not know how to eat using a knife and a folk, she was always broke and she hated the idea of having children (familiar!!). I could not find a single reason to love this girl besides her body and look but still wanted to be with her. When I finally got the balls to drop her azz, I learned my first lesson that my conscious mind and my subconscious mind are not always in total agreement.

If you have trained your mind to respond to looks by making your TV and pop culture magazines your main reference then your first impression is physical. If you have trained your mind to ignore the physical and look for the inner mind, you are one in millions. The physical does not impress me much, I know from experience that inside a beautiful body may be hidden an insecure secret sluts who seek nothing expect domination services.

ALL the men were respectful and honest. Anywhere from getting back to being feminie, to cooking more, to walking in the park, to listening and stop hearing waiting for your time to speak overriding what I just said. Pretty good show.

Also, I let you guys know that I went to two 50th b-day parties this past Saturday. WTF is going on w/folk. I had on a very nice black dress only to find myself at a nice house full of biker dudes…OMG! Worked w/what I had and had a good time.

Kym: Have you invested in someone emotionally or spiritually for a long time first before getting something started, or do you start with attraction and invest emotionally later?

Sometimes it goes backwards…and then you see them for the “person” they are…and THAT makes them physically attractive to you…in your heart and dreams… know what i mean?

Me? i always follow my “first” instict… in EVERYTHING i do…without question.

I’m a musician by trade, career, and most of all by nature…we tend to do that…follow our hearts and try and let the brain play “catch up” with us…always improvising…always… -d

No Hell’s Angels. Big dudes who seemed like they could eat me whole. There were a few obvious vultures in the group but overall stayed respectful. The other 50th party most had on jeans. I was told at least 8x that night I was “prissy.”

Sexy the real shame is that those dudes let their women drop off to the point they had to call and ask for something she apparently gave them initially. Set a standard and enforce it. Period. If old girl drops off let her know about the infraction and move forward. If it happens again start remedial training. Third strike gets her benched for good.

This is why these married dudes get to the point where their wives won’t even sleep with them. They allow her to drop off. Next thing he’s looking outside for things he should be getting at home. The thing is if the dude drops off she chastizes him right away and without remorse. The chicks are ballsyer than the dudes.

yups…i’m NOT new to GA…been here on and off for the past few years…a NY’r by birth…(yet I have to say..i’m put off by the north/south thing s i believe we ALL share this planet)….but anyway…I’m new here…and i’m so glad i “found” this place…as ALL of you are so very cool…

I only hope i can ADD more than i p** people off…i’m pretty strong with my beliefs of this world we spin upon… not in judging others… but just the very things that make up this planet we all reside upon… I don’t believe in, nor wish we had borders…be it states or countries…I think most of all…we are ALL human…and that is what matters most… borders never help…they only hinder…same with skin color and gender…

In the end…we ALL have the same wishes, wants, needs, and feelings…

    If anything…that’s what I think…not that anyone would care what i do….(think that is)… ;-)

Now you’re reading my mind Staceye cuz that thought did enter. A bunch of old, hard looking men w/quite a few raunchy looking women. Heck, one male dancer got off the dance floor and grabbed a chair and pulled it back on the floor and his partner proceeded to give a short lived lap dance. All I did was SMH. (Not in the middle of people dancing around you.) Hell, no wonder most thought of me as being “prissy”.

How emotionally driven are we when it comes to relationships?

I hope that we dont listen to our emotions, it’s for kids only. Listening to ones emotion is the source of bitterness, controlling behaviors and sometime (passion) crimes. Emotional people are very bad at tolerating simple discomforts such as a job change or an end to a relationship. They stay in bad relationships just because they are terrified of being alone, hurting someone else or hurting their feelings. Tolerating emotional discomfort is a major component that one must have to lead a successful adult life. Adult people learn to listen to their conscience instead of their emotions. Listening to our conscience is the only way to make our hearts tender to live disciplined and fulfilling lives.

Funny that people who put their emotions on the front line dont even have any control of their own emotions a simple fact that they dont know who they are. If you dont take control of your emotions, life will happen to you but it does not have to be that way. You can control your emotions and take control of your life and write pages of your own histories…..thats living

Oh, Let’s give a special thanks to Auntie Rita’s probabtion officer for allowing her a pass out from the halfway house. That was a trying time getting all 8 of her kids placed while she was locked up. Before we get started with the festivities, there is a special storage area everyone will need to put there car keys, purses, jewelry and underwear. Granny NoGood will be here shortly. Let’s say a prayer for her recovery of thievery. She is finally in counseling but it’ll be a long road. Again thanks for coming and enjoy….Oh and could whoever stole all the packs of kool-aid and swapped them out with Ramen Noodle Seasoning packets…could you please return them to the kitchen.”

demi LOL@ ‘running from Henry Co’. what were we doing up that way anyway??

Binford quantify that with ‘emotional immature’ ppl… etc etc. adults deal wit their emotions. they have to. its what sets us apart from animals … even the mentally-challenged experience emotion. only the demented and deranged individuals carry the gene that allows for no emotion.

one can harden themselves against demonstrative emotion, which in and of itself is not necessarily a bad thing. but to voluntarily become devoid of emotion and not have it play a reasonable part in choices we make is flawed thinking at its best.

DasV what set us apart from animals is conscience not emotions. All animals (including humans) have emotions used to control our instincts. Emotional immature people dont deal with their emotions, they respond to them, they act like animals by following their emotional instincts. Emotional mature people deal with their emotion by trying to find a place of peace amid a storm, by tolerating the discomfort caused by their feelings and stay calm.

If you are a Jesus follower, read Mark 4 37-41 where Jesus command his disciples to stay calm, to have faith and not to succumb into their emotions of fear. No matter how you feel, you should find a place of peace in your heart because once you do; the battle is not yours anymore, God fight for you.

It should be completely clear to you what Darrell’s problem is. He’s not gay he just continues to reiterate his point because he knows that the only way he will find the someone his heart truly desires is if they have the same philosophy as his.

It’s extremely clear that he has serious self-image issues. He has absolutely no confidence in his physical appearance. He has clearly been shot down alot based on his looks. To him, he believes his conversation and wordsmithing is where his gold lies! And he is determined to make others see it.

Slim Referral dating aka being hooked up by a friend.

I actually did not have a good experience with being hooked up by a close friend of mine, so I prefer meeting a person and taking it from there. The bad part about hooking up a friend (being a matchmaker) is the potential guilt factor you may feel if the things turn into a nightmare between your friend and the person you tried to set them up with. I dont want the responsibility of dealing with the let down or breakup. I use to always warn my girlfriends about getting involved with my brothers. I did not want to deal with blood on my hands.

Amazon Once a week? hmmm that wont cut it for me. Unless that is one 8 hour non-stop day. The doctor(a woman) he had on there recommended 3 times a week for married couples. She said the wife should sleep naked( I would assume that time of the month as an exception) I am not with sleeping naked-Anything could happen. But I can see 3 times a week. Her other recommendation(I think she was hocking some kind of book) was to learn one techinque that would knock your man to his knees..(again that sounds great…but I see some flaws in her logic) I just think the key is to keep it interesting. One of the old school guys on here said his wife comes up with games. Thats the kind of stuff I think works. Naked wrestling matches, strip uno, etc.

This ^ is the TRUTH! Try this…I got a $600+ ticket trailing an asian guy to Savannah for my friends wedding once. Going 92 in a 70mph in Bryan County (20min outside of Savannah) we both got pulled over. His was higher. NEVER in life will i do that again!

Sleeping naked is great tho, but I don’t have kiddies.

In terms of keeping things interesting, I hope my hubby would be happy with having the pole in the house. Cuz that’s what I propose to keep things spicy and judging for the bruises on my legs and knees right now, it better be worth it. LOL

LOL I have also been set up with my boy’s boy and I was so disappointed. Dude looked like Mr. Potato head…except he was White! I think my boy got me because he was mad that I would not be with him…but he had an “Ex girl” who still lived with him until she could find a place. Which of course I will not fall for that crap! On the sex, ol boy needs to either dump her or take that azz. If she calls the popo and he goes to court the judge would understand if he was only getting it 10 times a year.

Now, the question is how many times a year is good? I start with Areds math X3. I say 120. Does a bj during that time of the month count?

But for real tho. I do have a crackhead uncle that can fix anything, build anything and does a good job. One thing to be considered when I can’t “move” you for a day because you are mentally preoccupied who knows whether or not I might be emotionally under the weather for two days following that and you cant seem to “lift” me. That knocks at least three days out right there. So on those it is me not you (on both parties) hiatus take into consideration the time elapsing in between.
