Roses are red, democrats are blue…
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I’ve always heard to keep away from politics and religion in polite conversation, although I think that mantra may be dying out now. Besides, with presidential primaries beginning, elections loom in the air and anyone who has any type of news diet will be in on the buzz.
So how soon do you introduce political topics into your dating life? According to a 2008 AOL/Zogby relationships poll, “ while more than half of respondents (51%) would date someone with opposing political beliefs, those in their 20s (60%) are most likely to leave politics at home while out on a date.”
Obviously, you don’t want to ram your political views down someone’s throat on a first date, but if it’s important in your life, you do want to have those types of discussions eventually with someone you’re seeing.
If you’re interested in politics, how soon do you want to know if the person you’re dating sees things your way? Would you be willing to date someone who was strongly conservative if you’re a staunch liberal? Or vice versa?
What about when things get more serious? Can politics interfere with a potential long-term relationship? Is it possible to ignore issues like the environment, abortion and war if you really care about someone?
Do the people you know seem to match the statistics quoted in this study? Are people in your age range more likely to disregard politics when looking for a mate? Or does it come up in casual conversation? Have you ever stopped seeing someone because their political views were so different from yours?
If politics aren’t important to you, would you rather be with someone who’s in the neutral zone like you, or does it matter?

Now, on to today’s topic.
From my experiences (and I went to Berkeley so the results could be a little skewed) Black folks don’t vary too much amongst political parties. Most people I know are either Democrat or independent. I do know a few black republicans, and their view are “different.” This isn’t something I really have to worry about in the dating world, really. I’d know their political views before things got serious and if anyone clashes with any of my beliefs in any area, the relationship probably won’t go very far.

Such hot-button issues as abortion, war, environment, human and civil rights, while they play into politics, are much less about whether you can affix a label of ‘Democrat’, ‘Republican’, ‘Conservative’, or ‘Liberal’. If the contemporary political climate shows me anything along those lines, it’s that people who insist on throwing those labels around expecting them to stick are idiots.
All of those above are deal breakers for me. Someone who is pro-war isn’t in support of our soldiers, and as a 10 year veteran, I feel qualified to say so. While I’d like to say that a woman should have control and authority over her own body, she had that before becoming pregnant, and the baby’s rights trump hers, religious issues notwithstanding. Ignoring environmental problems is just plain stupid — at my age, I can already remember when air and water quality was pristine compared to what it is now. Even 15 years ago one could almost always see Stone Mountain from atop Kennesaw Mountain; now one almost never can.
But to me, those aren’t necessarily just political issues. To me, people who are pro-war, pro-abortion, anti-environment and who don’t care about global human and civil rights lack moral fiber. I could never be in a close, romantic relationship with someone like that.

Good Morning & Happy New Year all
Oooh, a topic close to my heart!!!
I’ll be the first person to stand on the table and say that I cannot wait for Barack Obama to be The President of the United States :) I am a volunteer on his campaign, I attend caucus parties, I travel to South Carolina on the weekends to canvas, I recruit volunteers, and I give my time on Sundays to do data entry at the Atlanta headquarters - I’ve never been interested in politics before to the extent I am now!
I said all that to say that the most interesting men I have met recently have been through the above acts I mentioned. It has been a great avenue to meet young men that are interested in the same issues that move me, it offers an instant common ground, and the caliber of men that frequent these activities has matched me quite well.
I met a few suiters during the holidays and one of the first things I’ve been trying to see lately is where they stand and what their views are. I haven’t run across anyone with radically different ideals than my own, but if I did, it definitely wouldn’t be a turn off - I enjoy good conversation and a friendly debate any day of the week.

I don’t push my political views on a date. But it does make for an interesting conversation piece. And if i am serious with someone political views from both of us have been established assured…and if i love him i probably wouldn’t give a flip if he voted for Flavor Flav…probably wouldn’t be the case but my point is it’s probably not THAT detrimental to the relationship. …i say that lightly b/c i never been on the opposing…

Morning, everyone, and a belated Happy New Year to you all. :-)
I wouldn’t necessarily consider a woman’s differing political views to automatically be a show-stopper, but I can envision a scenario or two where it could definitely become an issue.
For example, if her political views were to conflict in some way with my my own religious beliefs (e.g. she’s an Earth-worshiping, tree-hugging environmentalist or someone who supports abortion-on-demand), then that’s where I’d have to draw the line. Of course, I’d fully respect her right to hold such views and opinions, however, as it relates to entering into a committed relatioship with her, it ain’t gonna happen.
Some of the most substantive relationships are those that involve differences between two people, but that’s not to say that those differences should always be tolerated. Case in point, I also would not date a woman who smokes, so the principle applies not just to politics, but to other relational areas as well.

On-topic- I’m not big into political affiliations per se`. I like having in-depth conversations. It is a turn off if you tell me you are strictly Dem/Rep without even knowing the issues. I can’t be around someone who can’t discuss topics of today on a reasonable level. Then turn around and vote for Joe Blow just because he is a Democrat. That tells me you don’t have a mind of your own or an original thought. Next!!!

What up ya…I prefer a man that has a view and is current about politics and world events. One that can blend and be involved in a political conversation while mingling in that set..without loosing the focus or getting heated.
My political views tend to evolve from my morals, upbringing living life in general so I think if my SO does have a view it can be skewed in a different direction than mine but at the core if we butt heads on issues that are substantiated in our daily life then yes I think it would create a block between us. I think we have to meet in the road somewhere politically although we don’t have to support the same party.

Beautiful, I hope you take note of when abc says: To me, people who are pro-war, pro-abortion, anti-environment and who don’t care about global human and civil rights lack moral fiber
I don’t totally agree with that statement, but on a similar note, if you met a guy who stood behind Bush and thought he was the best President to date - you would probably need to dig a little deeper into his moral fiber. While politics and parties may not affect your relationships… a persons allegiance with a certain party may represent something else.

For starters, most people can’t truly elucidate the ideological positions the different political parties espouse. So for the most part, those are just labels that people use without really understanding the underpinings of each… and two their is not clear boundary separating those ideological views that one can go with.
that said, the values one upholds speaks more about them than the political party they say they support or the candidates they vote for. I can even dare to venture out and say, most political choices regular folks make are purely emotional.
you don’t have to talk politics to know these values, they should be evident in the topics you and your date engage in and in their lifestyle. it is those values that they live by that should matter most in choosing a partner…

The issues don’t matter to me as much as involvement in the process, concern for how the issues are handled, and an active interest in resolution.
My political views could best be described as independent. Don’t mind abortion (a woman’s right to choose), the war was silly (and anyone that supports is silly to me too, blind dedication), and I don’t want the government telling what I can and can’t do (i.e. smoking in public place, sex in public places, etc.).
As long as my woman and I can agree to disagree and argue our various (if there are) opinions in a respectful and intelligent manner, I’m good.

Cee Yes. I love living downtown. Especially in the historic Washington Park/Mozeley Park area. I catch the train most of the time if I need to go anywhere. (Saves a lot of gas…I only fill up to ride 2x a month). Philips Arena station is 2 stops from the house and the Ga dome is one stop (Vine City).
Other than that around that darn Aquarium traffic is usually ok, though.
I grew up in the ‘burbs and didn’t really like it. Clayton County before it became Eldrin Bell/Victor Hill’s territory. My High School was actually a National School of Excellence(Lovejoy High School. There weren’t problem with keeping accreditation.Riverdale was predominantly white and so was North Clayton. So it wasn’t exactly the same as it is now.

Good Morning Everyone!!
I co-signRell in that it matters very much to me that he VOTES! We can debate political views all night long, but it really bothers me when I meet people who don’t vote. I think it’s such a slap in the face to our ancestors and you lose all credibility to complain about the current state of affairs.
I know many people who only vote for the Presidential elections, but that’s not enough. It’s our local judges and legislators who are sending the Genarlow Wilson’s to jail. NEway, things rub off when you date for an extended period of time. As a result, my SO has started watching the debates and learning more about the issues.
We’ve yet to vote for the same candidate in any election and probably won’t for the Presidential primaries, but I’m glad that he can atleast debate the issues with me.

Peach Allow me to butt in regarding your 10:16 post.
“if you met a guy who stood behind Bush and thought he was the best President to date - you would probably need to dig a little deeper into his moral fiber.”
And just why is it that a person who supports President Bush should have their “moral fiber” questioned? Is it simply because you don’t support him?
You seem pretty quick to want to paint those of us who support the President with a really broad brush. It’s as if you think that support of Bush is the same as giving tacit approval to each and every one of his positions - a mindset which, speaking only for myself, couldn’t be further from the truth. I don’t like that we’re at war in Iraq and wish our troops could come home today! I also don’t support the President’s stance on Palestinian statehood or the degree to which government spending has skyrocketed under his administration.
I’m not about to say that Bush is the “best president to-date” as I don’t usually apply such subjective terms to the people I support politically. For example, the reason I didn’t vote for Bill Clinton wasn’t because I didn’t “like” him (as so many people are so prone to give as their reason for not supporting a particular politician.) I didn’t vote for him because I had a philosophical difference with his (and the Democratic Party’s) stance on the social and fiscal issues that were of importance to me as an individual voter.
As a black man who votes, I long for the day when my fellow “brothers” and “sisters” will come to respect one of their own for simply exercising his or her right to think differently politically, without being denegrated or otherwise labeled for doing so.

CeePeters Street is not far but I live down MLK. Between Washington Park and Mozeley Park.
My nephew got a rare treat when we went into the Publix on MLK a few years ago. We were in line behind the late Mrs. Coretta Scott King. She lived a few blocks from us in the Vine City area. I’ve also gone into the Busy Bee and chatted with Rev. Lowery and Rev. Young. (Rev. Young and I had met before. Both of our wives belong to the same sorority and met at a couple of events.) Demi That makes two of us then, because I don’t “blindly” follow my leaders either. In fact, in my 11:07 post I reference two specific instances where I do not support President Bush.
That notwithstanding, it should stand to reason that any black person (man or woman) who has the balls to, of their own volition, break ranks with their family and friends and depart from decades of political tradition, should be given the benefit of the doubt that he or she is not someone who “blindly” follows anybody.

Darrell You read like you support Bush bc the most don’t or that you are a republican bc most of your fam and friends aren’t. If that is not true please explain why you:
Support Bush
Are a Republican
And I know you have a big enough vocab not to use because I like him or the party

ARed I love Directv. My only problem is sometimes where they place the satellites and when it storms I am going to potentially lose service. I still like it better than Comcast though

Who is going to OSS this satdy? Iam a Chris Mathews fan,the most intelligent political junkie on tele.I dont care about somebody seeing things my way, just somebody who can hold down a discussion about the issues and argue intelligently. My woman knows the boundaries of argument, coz excessive argument kills romance anyway.Argment has to be light. Even tho i can be considered democrat, i luv Oreilly coz of his entertainement value, and not the validity of his arguments. On talk radio, Shawn Hannity is the best and again not because he has valid points, but just the presentation of the show. I luv to hear the contrarian view becoz i too have an opinion.

SexyLeggs I don’t have any law background, but in physics we tend to make assumptions about every problem, probably even when we shouldn’t. lol

For Real My reasons for supporting President Bush are based solely on principle, not personality, and this applies to ANY politician I might support. So you’ll never hear me say simply that I either “like” or “don’t like” him (or her, as the case may be.)
As I see it, Bush, like any other political figure, is merely the “representative” of a much broader set of principles to which I (or anyone) might espouse. I consider myself to be both fiscally and socially conservative and, simply put, those principles align more closely with the Republican Party than with the Democratic Party.
When I say I support “Bush”, what I’m NOT saying is that I am in complete agreement with every position he takes. Not at all. It’s simply that, as it relates to the majority of socio-economic issues that are most important to me, my personal values and beliefs are more closely matched with the Republicans than the Democrats. (i.e. taxes, abortion, school choice, welfare reform, etc.)
That’s it.

limegpuppy - Mainly, I don’t want to be locked into a contract. But also I didn’t want to lose service in storms and I do love the On Demand feature from Comcast. Not enough to not consider other options.
Dreams - I’m too much of a goody goody to do bootleg cable. Besides, a DVR is now a requirement in my life and that requires a cable box. LOL

A-Red Yeah, I voted for Bush in ‘04 and I plan on supporting the Republican nominee in ‘08. Like I said, it’s about principle, not personality, so no disrespect to either Obama or Hillary or Edwards because I don’t personally know any of them. But I’ll be working hard to see that neither of them wins the White House in November.

Never had a problem with DirecTV. The occasional bad storm would not out service for a lil bit. Nothing more than your gandma telling you to unplug everything. I’ve heard many complaints also about Comcast. Leggs I’m a man so tell me what is OxBlood colored? A variation of red perhaps. Ceeli Thanks for the clarification. AmazonRed I’ve recently switched to DirecTv last summer (mostly for the Sunday Ticket football). Its pretty good. They gave all premium channels free for six months after that I had to choose one.
I only miss the On Demand. I could watch my Entourage, Sopranos and The Wire whenever I wanted to with that & control it too (pause, ff, rewind).
It depends on what you want. The prices have gotten crazy.

Darrell:
Socio-political question NBF:
Do you find it the least bit odd that people that are religious within the republican party support guns for everyone, that every child be born, that the state not pay for the child once its born, not help the mother, send the kid to war for any perceived infraction, and if they don’t follow the laws, put the child/man/woman to death? How does that jibe in your mind?
Hey, likewise, I don’t want to pay for people that don’t want to work, I don’t really care that much about political correctness, and I don’t mind public biblical displays, just not on government property.
Likewise, I don’t want to be arrested in my home for getting b@#$#n from wifey, don’t want to have the government intereede if I want to take my wife off life support (fluck her parents wishes). And I don’t wan to pay for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to have health insurance, I just want mine to go down.
If you could
