Livin’ la vida local
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
My most recent date was with a man who took me to (insert chain Italian restaurant here). We had a great time, I was full when I left, and all was well.
But I couldn’t help but think afterward, he took me to chainrestaurant? Now don’t get me wrong—men, I did not subtract any points for this. We had a nice evening.
But I thought, we live in the middle of Atlanta! We have so many original restaurants, and even Atlanta-only chains! Why wouldn’t you take advantage of them? You can eat at chainrestaurant any day, in any state! And some local spots are even less expensive than the chain we went to.
I realize I’m a foodie, so I probably eat out at more restaurants than many people, but I thought, don’t you want to make a great impression, especially in the first month or so of dating someone?
When you go on dates, do you capitalize on all the city has to offer? Do you choose (or encourage your date to choose) local hangouts over chain restaurants?
What’s your favorite local spot to take a first date? Any places with great atmosphere that are bound to make your date smile? Has anyone ever taken you somewhere on a first date that you were really impressed with or had never been to before? Are there any places in Atlanta you would warn people not to go to on a first date?
Where’s the romantic restaurant you take that special someone who you’ve started seeing exclusively? Are there places that can balance ambience and food without draining your (or your date’s) wallet?

Bella you said you are not taking points off the guy for taking you to the chain resturant yet here you are complaining about him not taking you to a local place. Okay something has to give for some of you not”so young” but young minded folks in 2008.
It is a date..not a marriage proposal. The point is to go out and have fun and get to know the person and see if this is some you can see yourself spending a couple of hours of your life in the company of to have said fun. It is not a invite to go out and try the latest resturant or hang spot..or a free meal. Question from me to you is did you go dutch this first meal or did he have to whip out the wallet to pay? If he paid then you eat where his wallet goes..if you paid then you can pick the local hot spot for grub. If you go dutch then you make a mutal agreement on a place that suits both of you.
Just because a guy ask you out doesnt mean he has to impress you. Impression works both ways..and I think the quicker some of us women folks get that the happier some of us will be. There is nothing wrong with thinking you are the best prize in the claw machine. The reality is you are not the only prize in the claw machine.
Now as for food places I love several local resturants-I had lunch at Six Feet Under for the first time this weekend. It was good. Nice size portions and I would recommend it for a date.
Oh yeah..Good Morning All.

Bella Question for you. So what would have your reaction been had he taken you to some mom & pop local place where the service/food ended up being bad??? Then you would’ve judged him on picking that spot just the same as you complaining about the Chainrestaurant. I’m not sure how the conversation went when you and him planned to meet up..but maybe if you stressed during the conversation that you like to try new places because ATL has so many to offer yadda yadda yadda…things could’ve been different.
Dr. Kym does have a point. Sounds like the guy wasn’t that interesting for you to focus on something so minor as the spot yall went to. It was just the first date. My suggestion would be to invite him to some new local spot for date #2 and flip da skrip. Try to do a lil impressing on your own. That would be the best way to set an example for him to UP his game on date #3 if it so happens to go that far.
Women We need to learn to stop picking everything apart. Lighten up, chill out, enjoy the moment, and have a darn good time.

hello good people
im with the Doc on this one, Belle. sounds like you are complaining, almost like you tryin find something to wrong with the ‘nice evening’. in the man’s defense, he may have choosen a chainrestaurant so there’s no surprises… he knew what to expect of the food, the atmosphere and had you tripped, he knew the exits (if he made a quick dash to the bathroom and jumped through a window for escape, he knew he wasnt gonna hit no brick wall)

WOW, sorry but you sound shallow. So what it’s a chain restaurant. That thought would never have entered in my mind. But as you say, you eat out a lot. You went on a date, he didn’t take you to McDonald’s or Burger King.
BTW, yes you are taking off points because “it stuck in your crawl” that he took you to a chain restaurant.

(Shaking my head). I’m not understanding the problem. The point is that he took you out to a sit down dinner for a first date. You had good food, convo and company, didn’t you?
He could’ve pulled up to the local Checkers and asked you what # combo you wanted. Then, let you know you were going dutch at the window…Which scenario do you prefer??

Good morning blogsville and welcome back to the work world.
WOW, has dating gotten this fugged up.
Bella the guy was probablly just trying to break bread with you, not lock you into forever and ever. I can’t believe you’d think something like that. Says alot about your thought processs. With the right person you can drive thru McD’s and wind up having a great time. Apparently he wasn’t the right guy. I’m glad he didn’t splurge for some upscale restaurant to an ungrateful woman. I hope you get all you deserve.
Outside of Pappageaux’s (which i’ve stated I’m addicted to) there is Maggiano’ (chain italian), Chequers, Mortons, and a place that closed down called Eatsy’s or was it Itsy’s? Great for a chick that doesn’t mind something a little different. Anyone ever ate there?
I’m fortunate now in that alot of the women I know love to cook. My sister, neighbors, friends, my ex gf ( ate New Years dinner over there). I love to sit down and eat food prepared especially for me.

Morning LadyJ. Kym This will be an interesting off season for a lot of teams. Why is it that chain restaurants are looked at as second class. I think you can have a great setting in any restaurant. Customer service should be more important.

Good MORNING all!
I think that’s a bit picky. If you have a better suggestion..then you should recommend it. Maybe he doesn’t know…so give him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he honestly thought he may have impressed you…After reading this I am sure his firecracker fizzled (insert…handicapped kid from WATERBOY here…w/ fizzled firecracker)
But as far as a good place…the smaller joints to me are the most initimate ones to go to. It depends on the type of person you are with. What they are into? I am personally a fan of any Tapas bar. Small initmate ambience. Two Urban Licks nice joint. Hell, the HARLEM bar is my ALL time favorite.
On a higher scale, The Sundial is quite impressive, Oceanaire, Mortons… Those are really nice restaurants…
Places not to go to would be….I guess the BLUE FLAME, Golden Corral or even anywhere that offers “Would you like fries with that?” or that offers coupons that you can redeem at the end of the date! lol!
Tapas bars are a usually nice place…decently priced and a great scenery

If you are happy with eating regular food, good for you. Some people happen to have a palate that prefers something unique, different. It doesn’t make you a snob or picky. It just means you are into things that are different than the norm. AGain, most people are reading way too much into the entry, and writing responses (as usual) off topic, and unrelated to the discussion.

Good Morning, all & Happy New Year…
No offense, but it sounds like you did take off points. I mean, if you had a good time, shouldn’t that matter more than whether it was a chain restaurant.
A chain restaurant is a little bit of a safe pick because it is familiar. Maybe this is why he chose it. Did you have any input or did he make all of the plans?
As for local restaurants my wife love for dinners are as follows: Repast, 2 urban licks (gotta try Lamb lollipops…2 urban licks was also featured on Rachel Ray’s show $20 a day for Atlanta, GA. We’e actually tried both locations of Six feet Under and both a pretty good (the original is better, though).

Good morning and happy Monday all.
I try to not over think things on dates, like Bella seems to be doing in this instance. I’d rather focus on having a good time.
That being said, if he’s chosing the restaurant, if I care about it being a chain (which I don’t) I’d speak up before meeting up. But usually the guy will ask me for my feedback and we’ll go from there. I love Mexican food and one of the last dates I went on, he researched Mexican restaurants and came up with a winner I had never had before. Now I want to eat there once a week. He scored major points for that one!

No Gina you are a silly airhead because you made a jacked off comment about me so I returned the favor. If your taste are to unique for the regular chain resturants then that should be stated to your date on day one and a suggestion should be made. If he asked her out and he is paying then she needs to bring novocain or order a salad so she can suffer through the meal with her unique tastebuds. Otherwise she needs to pull out her wallet and say how about I take you to one of my favorite spots. Just because you are a foodie doesnt mean everyone is. Suggestion if this is that important to you then might I suggest you date someone who is like minded in tastebuds that way you are on the same page. Unique tastebuds my a*..it is all coming out the exact same way.

Morning Folks!!!
I have to agree with the others on the way this topic was presented. Bella you do sound a little shallow, but I’m sure you were just looking for an interesting lead-in to the real topic at hand. So I won’t subtract any points for this LOL.
For me, the company not the locale makes the date. The actual planned date can be a disaster, but if the guy and I had fun getting through that disaster - that would be a great date for me.
Dr. Kym - Six Feet Under is one of my favorite places, I make sure to go there every time I make it to the A. I also make sure I get in breakfast at Thumb’s Up (usually the one in East Point). I had dinner at Harlem Bar on NYE and that’s another of my faves in Atlanta. Casa Grande is my favorite Mexican restaurant. I could go on and on because I love to eat.
I did go on one first date here in Houston where the food was GREAT!!! I later determined that it was the food that hooked me, not the man. The second time I went to that restaurant (with some friends) I left with the same ‘I think I’m falling in love’ feeling that I did the first time…

See the hard thing about being a guy is most of the things listed above. Then add to the fact that you do your research and brainstorm for hours to come up with an original new& trendy spot and SHE DOES NOT LIKE IT!. This happens quite often you ask her : What are you in the mood for? What kind of foods? she says: I can eat just about anything, I’m open You then take her to Chopstix decent lil spot then she frowns at the table an says: I DONT LIKE CHINESE FOOD!!! ;-(

Demi time out for playing the Corporate Thug on T.V.! You probably gonna have to get 500 Gansta on them! Dang sweetie that’s alot!!!
Hi Kinderbabe/ladyj…i hear the Oceanaire is a cool spot. I’ve never been but seem i should check it out.
Grill Master 900 Can i tell you about Saturday’s game?!?…okay we lost 26 - 0. Our team went for 12 shouts and all but 2 were taken buy one lil guy. AND the “testosterone” showed vividly after the game. WOW!

Ha ha! Good morning, all! I’ve missed you!
Let me reassure everyone that I did indeed have a fun time with a really great guy. (And I would never bash a guy for planning a date. If we stay together, I can inform him later that I’m really into some other restaurants!)
All I’m saying is that I noticed the difference in what we thought might be ideal for a date.
It’d be the same as if he took me to do something I wasn’t interested in. Say…field hockey or something. I’m just not into it. That doesn’t mean that we can’t have chemistry.
Demi, I loved your point about “playing it safe” for the first few dates, because you may not know about peoples’ food allergens. Has anyone ever had a bad experience with this?

Bella - I have dealt with a date with allergens. I dated a female (when I was single, of course) that was allergic to corn!!! That ruled out a lot of mexican since corn is a major staple for that food. She did mention that prior to our first date (which I thought may have been important). Luckily, I chose a chain spot that had a lot of variety.

What’s up Party People!!
Side notes:I need LSU to win tonight, hated to see the Steelers lose, glad the Giants won and The Wire was OFF DA CHAIN
On topic: I am still learning about a lot of Atlanta’s hidden treasures. I dont think I would have read so much into the place and whether it was a chain or not as I would have if we enjoyed each other’s company.
I am trying to speed read and catch up, computers were a lil slow this am

Lady J You are right about the drinks at the V. Ave location. There has NEVER been a time i left that place sober. LOL! Patron, long island ice teas…delicioso!
Staceye You know I was sitting over here wondering what the madeover Starship would be like. It would definitely have to have a ‘special video camera system’. You know how you walk in and see yourself on the Security Video? Well it would automatically show your face imposed into the latest adult movie. LOL! There would also be a tray of new warm doohickeys (sort of like a bottle warmer) to try out in the ergonomically correct dressing room for your testing pleasure. I think there would also be an arts-n-crafts area where you can have your own member or area made into a toy…for a slight additional fee of course. Cuz I know for sho i’m not the only chick that’s ever wondered how her CT would look made into a top notch silicone/latex toy!
I can see it now, selling bootleg fake puddy’s at Underground

Cemeeli- @ least he’s not shy about puttin the ball up! “Testosterone” is a GOOD thing at all ages do not worry. Well my game was a losing effort but I was dam proud of my boys we only lost by four points, the game was tied until last min of game. Okay the score was 8-4 But we got D!! They just were not taking shots, so I got to drill it home 2nite in practice.
Staceye- calm down with all the “home turf” talk you’re givin away sacred information!

Staceye I know…That’s why I only date mature women…Most of them are very open to try new things…So if they turn a restaurant down, most likely the food or service is bad.

I actually agree with Bella’s line of thinking. The money part of it really isn’t an issue - obviously, he took her somewhere and paid for the date. That was gracious of him.
However, to some folks going to a chain restaurant may look a little uncreative on a first date. Doesn’t mean either person is right or wrong, it just shows what their interest and likes are. I’m now married and it doesn’t really matter. However, if someone took me to Carraba’s or Macaroni Grill for a first date then it would definitely come off like we have somewhat different interests.

…and as far as budget friendly dates, keeping it simple, breaking bread is concerned. Let me be the next to say…the impression should not be the atmoshpere but how compatible you are with your date. Go dutch, pick a place you’d both be comfortable with & you’re comfortable. It should not be my place or yours not on first meet/date. IMO

Demi, I kinda figure you would say something like that. I thought after posting that one of you would wonder why I would even consider cooking let alone willing to see a person that couldn’t afford McDonald’s. Hell, perhaps it was a bad month for him. Good Morning Everyone
I always try to get some feedback when going on a first date. If I know you’re a “foodie”, then I’ll prepare accordingly. Without that knowledge, I’d pick the safe spot too.
Atlanta does have lots of good food though. Capital Grille on Paces Ferry has lots of ambiance, and the food is not bad. There are a couple of good Brazilian churrascarias that I like. I’ve also found a some good Thai, Ethiopian, and Indian spots. Island Cafe on memorial is always good for Carribean. I have to admit that, after living in Cali and Texas, it’s been really hard to find good mexican. Any suggestions?

Beautiful I recall going on a date to the Center of Puppetry Arts once. Yeah its a little elementary but we had soooo much fun in there. It was nice to just not take life so seriously for a change with all that, Why did your last relationship end? How many kids n shyt do you want? blah blah blah mumbo jumbo.
Go rollerskating, iceskating, bike riding….maybe the problem is everyone wanting to ball out of control. I think it’s time to get back to the basics. Keep it simple every now and then. I challenge you all. Just imagine how freeing it can be to take a step back into the light heartedness of being a kid again.
IF a dude take you to Mickey D’s, dare him to jump in the balls at the play area or something. HOWEVER, you might want to make that the last thing you do before dipping out into a running vehicle, screetching the tires out the parking lot before the Po Po shows up. lmao!!!!!
For Real If you’re out there I have one bottle of luke warm water, a jump rope, and a candy necklace. How bout it? lol

Morning,
Question:
Is it the spot, or the company?
Generally, I’m finding a lot of the boughie babes care more about the spot (is it trendy? does anybody [of import] know about it?). I mean if I’m planning a nice date (in the midst of all the other thing I’m doing in life, does the effort or the destination matter?
Almost make me long for the days when the ‘Bees was impressive…..

Damn the CHILL is a no-go these days? I must not have gotten that memo. I think some wack dudes are giving the CHILL date a bad rep. Here’s how a real CHILL date I had:
1) I cooked baked cornish hen with apple/marsala wine sauce, baked sweet potato sprinkled with brown sugar and cinnamon, and grilled zucchini, served with a german Trochen Beren Auslese wine. Topped it off with good conversation.
2) Rented a movie we both hadn’t seen but wanted to.
3) Kicked it.
She said she liked it more than any restaurant we could’ve gone to.

Dreams - There is a definitely a lack of good mexican food in Atlanta. I like Uncle Julio’s on Peachtree. They served me the best enchilladas this side of the rocky mountains. (I did have to tell them to make it my way, but once they did it was on).

Hey Lady J.
It’s little wonder why dating in Atlanta is so difficult with all the shallow and self-centered singles that live here.
Bella, your lead-in is so prototypical of Atlanta women. It’s like you have to find something wrong with the date, despite all the good. And then make some comment that discredits everything you just said.

Blow Me these wild mood swings are scaring the shyt out of me. I’m not a sexist pig. I’ve eaten at most of the good restaurants out there but prefer going to my sisters house to eat. Better food and great company. Excuse me for being over the hype.
I’m going to find you a good therapist to deal with those emotional swings. That cant be good for you. LOL
Mysterious a great home cooked meal is a far better date and you can learn more from that date than you ever could going out to eat, although that can be fun too.
I remember me and my ex wife were on Buford highway and hungry and she had like $2 and I had $3. We drove thru McD’s and bought food and shared it while sitting in the car and laughing our azzes off. Thats when it was ok to just be together, before the restaurant you chose decided how much you were willing to pay for some puddy.

I agree, the A’s got some nice spots.
But that’s why I have cable (Food Network specifically), becuase I love cooking. My diet is limited by what I can’t eat, and just plain won’t, so I love coming up with new and inventive ways to eat foods that I like.
I’m not out on the town like that going out for dinners and the such.
So I’ma take notes, and add that to the list (frugality). I’m tr
