Holidazed & Confused
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I agreed to help out a guy of interest with his shopping this weekend. He was utterly perplexed about what to buy, so I figured I could find out his personal style/taste while I helped him pick out gifts. Ok, I also was nosy about who he was buying for, too.
We found some really nice things for his family, but we saw a lot of men milling around looking dazed and confused about what to buy. I turned into a little personal shopper for about three frustrated men because I felt so bad for them!
Guys, do you need ideas or tips on what to get? You have exactly seven days to find something. Send out your SOS, maybe you could get some inspiration from other readers!
Ladies, do you have an exciting or unique gift for the men in your lives? Did you plan a romantic holiday surprise for your sweetheart? Is there a new guy you want to dote on for the holidays?
Let’s swap ideas: Guys, who do you have left on your shopping list? Do you know what you will get for the new girl in your life? Have you thought of something romantic for your significant other?
What is on your ultimate wish list?

Again, I won’t have to buy a guy a gift this year since I’m doing the solo thang. I’ll peep back in once I de-ice my computer screen.

Morning, everyone. :-)
Given that I don’t have an S.O. at the moment, my shopping list consists of only two people - my son and daughter - and they’re both all set. As for me, I’m hoping that by next Christmas my list will be longer by one person. If so, then I’ll know Santa got my e-mail. ;-)

Anyhoo - This will def be a nice Xmas since we’ll have time off and the boy (11 mo old) will be in day care. Wooohooo! We will have a chance to catch up on some grown peoples stuffesess.

Good Morning
All my gift giving is taken care of I think? (have to check my list) But when buying for SO I always get them something they will like or use. So I buy based on interest..if he likes wine..buy wine…if he likes sports…maybe tickets to a game.etc. If you know your mate then you know what they like so get them something they will appreciate.

Oh…poor guys. Between today’s topic and yesterday’s topic it would seem hey have it so rough during the holidays (note sarcasm). Okay, so some don’t know how to shop…big deal. It’s typically the woman that get the short end of the stick during the holidays: shopping, cooking, cleaning. A lot of work! No sympathy for the guys who can get away with picking out a few gifts (which now result in gift cards) or running some errands!
By the way, Happy Tuesday everyone! ;-)

Good morning! Don’t have anyone to buy for this year. Like Darrell, I’m hoping next year it’ll be different.
If I did have him on my list, I would purchase him one of these: Wii, PS3, new cell, cologne, pair of kicks, weight set, leather jacket, cd’s, his favorite movie series, leather gloves & scarf, pair of tickets to somewhere he loves, trip to Vegas, a lap dance, a massage, etc.

I don’t go out looking for specific things to buy for people. I just start shopping… things all but jump off the shelves at me. If I look for something in particular I’ll never find it, but if I just go looking with that person in mind, I’ll find the perfect thing by chance. It can get a little expensive doing it like that though. But what the hey, it’s Christmas!
I’d say a guy that has a hard time figuring out what to buy for his girl doesn’t really know her all that well. If he did, he’d know what she likes, what she’d needs, what will make her smile on Christmas morning.

That’s not fair. I might know my woman real well and instead of buying “something she needs, wants” I could give her the freedom to do it herself, while I take care of the kids [sic], help cook, whatever.
I mean women get away with giving “love” on just about every occasion. Why can’t the expression of romance be something as simple as “hey baby, you go to Spa Sydell, I got today”?

Dan, I’d give her a spa day just because it’s Tuesday. We’re talking about Christmas. Women don’t want a gift card, they want you to come through with something special — that’s the ‘thought’ that’s important to them. Not necessarily how much it costs, and it’s not about cooking or taking care of kids and being tired either, in spite of what they might (endlessly) say about that. That kind of thing, they want and need every day. On special occasions like significant holidays, that kind of thing doesn’t cut it.

I dont have an SO to buy for this year but if I did: detailing for his car, cologne, cuff link w/his initials, watch, strip tease and body massage (performed by yours truly), pay for at least a years worth of haircuts, etc. Just some things that I would do or have done in the past.
I feel that I am easy to shop for b/c I like simple things:gift cards, literature, music, concerts, perfume, spa treatments, etc. I like to receive jewelry as well but (Let me get my blog bullet-proof gear out) I prefer to get it myself (unless Daddy buys it). :-) I know it sounds crazy but that is just me. Now my wedding rings were a different story….
Anyway, I’ll pop in later, I am sure this will be an interesting blog day..

Good Morning to all I hope all is well…..ahhh winter is for sure here.
I was done with most of my holiday shopping months ago. I shop all year round, if I see I get it. Puts less stress on the end of the year. However with the new guy I’m between 3 gifts for him, its been pretty hard to decide which one. We are closing on a house in a few weeks that should be gift enough. But I wanted to get something special just for him.
ABC so true on what you said. I know for a fact my guy got my gift awhile back. It sucks it was so easy for him and I’m stuck in limbo.
The ultimate gift is I’ve picked a single mother with 3 kids to help with there holiday. Just giving that is my gift to myself to be able to provide them with some type of joy.

SAN DIEGO — The 2007 American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists Annual Meeting and Exposition starts Monday at the San Diego Convention Center with pharmaceutical scientists from across the globe presenting the latest in medical discoveries.
The meeting — which marks the largest AAPS meeting to date, with more than 9,000 expected to attend — provides media the opportunity to speak with some of the world’s most prominent pharmaceutical scientists. Details regarding the 2007 key medical discoveries include:
First Reversible, Orally-Administered Male Contraceptive New research presented at the AAPS Annual Meeting indicates that a new oral option for men to prevent pregnancy may be possible. The study shows the efficacy and side-effects of an oral contraceptive for males, which is similar to birth control pills currently available for women.
To date, effective male contraception has been restricted to physical methods, namely condoms and vasectomy. However, the research conducted by scientists at GTx, Inc., the Ohio State University, and the University of Tennessee provides the first male oral contraceptive that has been found effective in preventing pregnancy.
Additionally, the option is reversible: after the medication is stopped, fertility is fully restored.
For 13 years, these researchers have been examining the reversibility of a compound that inhibits infertility by utilizing a non-steroidal hormonal therapy known as a selective androgen receptor modulator.
“Past clinical studies using testosterone for male contraception were not effective at preventing pregnancy without producing significant negative side- effects,” said James Dalton, Ph.D., AAPS Fellow and lead researcher at GTx, Inc. and the Ohio State University.
“Our recent study was doubly successful because it completely and reversibly inhibited fertility without unwanted side-effects.”
In fact, the study proved that this male pill had positive effects on muscle and bone. Clinical trials are expected to begin in one to two years.
Blog Ladies can you envision this conversation taking place:
Woman #1: ‘My [husband, boyfriend, significant other] is selfish. He’s on the pill and won’t get off. I’ve asked him to stop taking it but he always says he’s not ready. He just won’t grow up. I don’t know what to do.’
Woman #2: ‘That’s what the pill has given men—a right to be perpetual adolescents. It’s given them veto power over women who want to have children’…

Naw, I’m not saying just on the holiday. But that’s a gift period.
Now, for all the stress that a woman goes through during the holiday, a helping hand is not considered a good thing anymore. Wow.
At the same, with all the chaos of the holiday (look at it from that perspective) to me, “baby, take some time just for you…” is a good thing. No in-laws, no crying chillen, no phone calls, no stuffing, no turkey, ham, et al. I’m talking about getting her out of the added hecticness of the holidays.
As far as everyday, we on that too. Many a night has a woman come home to a meal in the oven, and fresh drawn bath (and pimpin, that’s without kids in the mix).

*Top of the brick azz morning to ya all!!!
Since I am single…the only gifts will be for family and my friends..oh and myself. But I watch a guys personal style and learn what he likes and try to keep within the realms of that….unless he is a fashion victim, then I intervene. Speaking of style…
Off topic: ladies have you ever had that friend who’s style of dress has completely changed to yours since they started hanging out with you? Its too the point that she starts to buy everything you buy? Do you hate to see a Mini Me coming around the corner? I am dealing with this now. I feel each person should have their on style. I feel like Lil’ Kim, “get yo’ own shyt…why you riding mine”! I wanna smack fire out of this chick because biting my style is like spitting in my face…down right disrespectful. I have had this happen to me more than once and I hate it. Fashion has always been my thing…that is why I went to college for Fashion Design! Personal Style is MY BABY! Why is this trick being a copycat instead of making her own path? Is it that she doesn’t get noticed so now she wants to dress as I do? Oh…did I mention even her personality is starting to mirror mine? She was a introvert….a pushover and now she wants to be assertive and she has even said that I rubbed off on her. I feel like Single Black Female. Is this trick nuts are something? Now that I am done venting…back to our regualry scheduled program!

Wow.
While I can’t get with Bill’s terminology, I can agree that a lot of the work women do (kids, house, etc.) is in part because they don’t want/know how to ask for help.
It befuddles me to no end, that a simple gesture as holding the door open for a woman, or offering to help with housework, or the kids homework is rebuffed.
I mean, kudos to the one’s getting it done on the solo! But when the offer is presented don’t readily turn it down. Maybe, just maybe, me offering to help has nothing to do with your authority or percieved dominance, maybe I just want to help becuase of how I was raised.
By abc

Do what you can to keep the woman from knocking herself out in the kitchen. While it’s a way they feel they show love, it’s a dead-end for men in that no amount of appreciation is enough. If you can’t avoid it altogether, help do the cooking, even if she’ll only let you do prep. Get a shopping list from her and do the shopping. Bring home specialty desserts from a gourmet restaurant. Again though, these things aren’t reliant on a significant holiday — if you don’t do that stuff all the time, you’re a dog. Takes one to know one.
I agree with Bill’s 9:58. Women who feel that way to all they can to make sure that they can make the claim, and complain about it the whole time.

hmmmm you might want to have a drink of egg nog or something it is not that serious. Also, how can you call this woman and friend and a trick in the same breath? I mean I would think it would be flattering that she is wanting to dress like you(unless the style of dress doesnt fit her shape then u have a problem) but otherwise what is the big diff? Unless you are buying clothes especially designed for you…someone..somewhere..at some point in time will have on that shirt or pants or skirt..so what. Kym I hate imitators! That is why I try to order a lot of my stuff from website that do not have stores. Each time I go out,,,I see a sea of woman wearing the same tired crap from the malls here. So of course when I go home to NY I rack up! I gets ladies asking where I got certaing things from and it’ great to be able to tell them a place where that can’t. I never reveal my websites. No..i do nto find it flattering when it turns into a bickering match because she went and bought the same things I have and now we are going out to the same place and I do not do the Bopsy twin thing! She them throws a crying fit about her having nothing else to wear. If she would not copy me in the first place…no problem would be present. Come on…you know you hate to see another women with your outfit on at a party or something. But it’s worst when the chick is with you. You look like you tried to do the Jr. High school thing and dress alike. I just feel she needs to be be her…and NOT me!

Staceye Why don’t you work it in conversation one day…. Ooooh that chic got on my _ I can’t stand wearing the same outfit as someone else. Or you could just stop hanging around her.
Sexyleggs My mother use to give us $400 every Xmas. It was pointless for her to try to hide items, and I think it was just easier on her. You are right, needless to say, it went very quick.

ARed, sorry, haven’t checked my personal email in about a week. I check in a few mins. You got that right, I’m already her butler. What’s funny IS she asked if she had final say on all that she bought. I looked at her like she had 3 heads and said NOPE!

staceye I may have seen someone with a shirt I own or a pair of shoes but not the same outfit from head-to-toe.. Sunday most of us wore black tops & jeans but we all had our own little twist to our outfits; we all looked great… No doublemint twins. It sounds like your friend really admire your taste of style…….

Mqew, my daughter wants $250. I am giving her $400. She’ll be surprised at that. However, you’re right, it’s going to go fast. I will show her how to bargain hunt and not buy the first thing she sees. She shops w/me a lot so hopefully she has been taking notes (just maybe). She knows how to watch prices in the grocery store and hopefully that will show thru on her shopping spree. It’s going to be interesting to say the least.
Staceye, I have a friend like you who absoulutely abhors anyone jocking her style. However, I see nothing wrong if someone complimented a particular blouse or shoe or jacket and then went and purchased the same item on a couple of occasions. BUT, to copy someone’s entire style can be a bit annoying after a while. How is that done anyway?

Staceye Don’t waste too much thought or energy on trying to be different from the next. Just do you and express yourself for who your are. If someone is trying to imitate you…just smile and accept the compliment. When my girlfriends and I go shopping together it’s only natural that if I see something cool they’ll gravitate towards it as well. Does that bother me…not in the least. I’m only trying to be me and if I walk in the party and someone had the same outfit on as me then I’ll tell them nice outfit. It doesn’t diminish the fact that I’m looking good! Remember..it’s not the clothes that make the lady, but the lady that makes the clothes.

Morning folks!
First of all, I think it’s admirable that guys are out there looking dazed and confused buying gifts for the women in their lives. I’m not much of a shopper myself - so I know personally the stress and anxiety that comes with trying to buy the perfect gift for the one you love…when you really don’t know what to get.
I don’t have an SO this holiday season and haven’t had one for Christmas in a while. The last time I did, I bought him something I wanted him to have.
As far as my shopping, I usually only buy for the kids and the adults’ gift was that I got their kids something. Well this year, with my travels - it turns out that I have gifts for the adults already and now I’m trying to shop for the kids. I do most of my shopping online and the gifts I go out and buy are gift cards. I can’t stand the shopping crowds - even for the one’s I love.
I can’t wait to open the educational toys with my niece and nephews on Christmas day so we can play with them. I got toys that I think will be fun - so if they don’t like them I can take them back with me ;-)

Staceye…can i say…Woooo-sah for you girlie!?!
My college roomate did something of the sort to me “Snatch my style” . Even though i don’t take it so personally as SJ said it is very flattering! (i took the other extreme with this)I embraced it! She even took it upon herself to make my closet her personal Vera Wang chamber so actually she “snatch my clothes”. When i say my sister would walk up in a step show, party or game with my exact same ‘put together outfit’ *(not at shame as i wore of course) But exactly how i wore it and smile and come right over to me. But see what i did was took her this approach. I would take with me shopping and take her to store that i thought complimented HER personality and made it come across as if i REALLY like the stuff that was in these stores. Wallah she took to it. She was more of a ‘simple casual, “Brittish look” as far as her personality. (with the long blk hair to match) but she did not know how to get creative with style. I just thought it was a cool project to help her find that little portion of herself that makes Mia, Mia.

On topic I have no idea what I’m getting SO for Christmas. If money wasn’t a factor I’d know exactly what to get him…wii, entire home entertainment system (speakers, flat screen tvs on the walls, etc), theatre room lazyboys, etc….But considering I can’t afford any of those items I’m stuck. He’s a great cook…so would it be wrong for me to get him a food processor? Along with a nice outfit?

*Mqew8 I have told her to stop and how much I do not appreciate it. But continues. So I have cut her off as of this week. I’m done with that crap!
ARED I am so used to being on my own. Nevere bothered me before…doesn’t bother me now!
Sexyleggs it’s to the point if we are at a store and I pick something up to buy it..she does too…I have put stuff back because of this. That is disrespect..get your own shyt! Even if I like something..and see her pick it up first…I will forego purchasing it out of respect and to avoid wearing the same outfit at the same time and looking stupid. All I want is the same respect. I’m just annoyed that’s all! I do not care if it sounds shallow or whatever to other..it bothers me…so screw what others think. I have spent my life worried about what others thought of me…now I am in F’ it mood! And I am happier for it!
SJ does it look like I am looking for a man? I do not want one….how many times do I have to say that? I do not feel it’s bratty to want someone to NOT be your carbon copy. If that person is your “friend” they should not do stuff to purposly annoy you!

Staceye But why do you think if you go shopping with her that she shouldn’t buy it just because you saw it first? If you weren’t there she probably would’ve picked the same outfit. Me and a girlfriend went shopping for the same trip to cabo and bought the same pants…without even planning it we were it the same day in cabo…I could’ve cared less…

Staceye how old is your friend? 25-29…Something tells me she’s trying to find her own style.
I will admit, when I first learn to dress corp…I bit a few dudes style for a minute…I was 22 at the time…One old cat pulled me aside and told me nice suit, but that’s not you. Now I dress per my height, build, skin complexion, and personality.
Pull her aside…nice as “YOU” can…And let her now, while you appreciate her for liking your taste in clothes, why not developed your own unique way of dressing. Would you mind if I can help you do that? I can’t believe I just type that. LOL
Now stop being mean and put your so call fashion senses to work!! God has given you a gift…Go apply the Dayum thang…somewhere LOL

Cemeeli I had to cut her off…she was ticking me off so bad I was 2 seconds from snatching out her glued in hair weave! LOL
Kym I’ll admit..I can be a bit of a Mean Girl….LOL I do have a thing for cold hard retaliation if I feel my personal space has been invaded. Maybe its because my friends back home…we each had own own style, own choice in guys (so no backstabbing/cockblocking) ever went on and there were no problems. When I used to date…we’d go out and she had a totally different taste in men. Now her style changed as well as her type of guy. There had been times she would try to cockblock and the dude would be like what’s wrong with your desperate azz friend? I did not see it at first…she is really fake! I mean claiming a sority when she doesn’t even know jack about them except the name and colors, claiming to come from a rich family…when I found out that shyt and true…tis the total opposite. The kind of chick that would buy new hair weave and clothes and not worry about her bills or her child….lying to men making them think she has got her stuff together (don’t even have her own crib or car)….shopping like she got it like that..then cries broke and tries to get funds from me! I fell for it for a while until I paid attention and found out that she had been talking shyt behind my back. Tried to get my ex man to pay her rent, etc…I guess we are what you call frienemies. I can’t deal with that drama so I cut her off. I guess the style jacking was just th icing on the cake so it is coming off like that is all she has ever done to me.
