Does dating make you fat?

ROOM at Twelve, Spice, Two Urban Licks, Trois. Any of these ring a bell? No, it’s not a checklist for a naughty rendezvous. These are just a few of the fabulous places to dine in Atlanta.

When you are single and dating, some of your socializing can take place in restaurants, at parties, or clubs that involve the consumption of food and alcohol. If you are one that tries to maintain some semblance of a healthy lifestyle, dating someone who, well isn’t, can be really tough.

My friend Christa has been dating Spencer for a few weeks, and she already realizes how horrible his eating habits are. What’s worse is, he tries to get her to partake of his bad eating habits all the time.

My friend Dennis said that he gained 12 lbs in the last year since his relationship with Lena first began. She recently mentioned the extra weight gain to him, and he somewhat blamed it on their relationship. When he was unattached, he played basketball on the weekends, went to the gym, and was a lot more active. Nowadays, the only time he breaks a sweat is when, well.. I stopped him before he could actually tell me that information!

Do you think dating and/or being in a relationship makes you gain weight faster than when you are unattached?

Have you ever been involved with someone who had horrible eating habits?

Do you have horrible eating habits, yet you are dating someone who eats healthy and lives in the gym? How can you make it work? Do you adopt their way of eating/exercise or stick to what you do and hope it doesn’t become a problem?

If you are vegan, vegetarian, or somewhat health conscious, are there places in Atlanta that you can go that caters to you?

Where do all the healthy, active, and physically fit single people mix and mingle?

I have an ex that blamed me for her moving from a size 6 to an 8. That didn’t make any difference to me, and I actually didn’t notice. I admit we ate out a lot, but there are usually healthy choices on the menu. We eat what we want……no excuses. My weight was always manageable. The fundamental difference was I worked out regularly and she didn’t. Like I always say…………fitness is a lifestyle, not a quick fix.

I think my eating habits change because when you’re dating a woman, you eat at a lot of places you wouldn’t normally. Most men, and MLB back me up, would prefer the little cooking that we do at home.

Plus like you said, your social activities change, from being active and silly with the homeboys to dinner and talking with your girl (which can be stressful enough to gain 20 pounds).

Where are we going? Am I right fellas?

PS See Knocked up, great movie! With interesting subtext on class and attraction.

Morning Room Hope everyone had a good weekend!

I am the poster child for forcing other activities. (e.i. my last date, was at a Paintball field). And now since it is my turn agian to suggest a place. We will be visiting another venue that involves being active. YES! So no, I can say that i am a victim of “Getting fat while dating”.

Now as it seems your friends Dennis and Christa, are in the situation where thier partner is not as active as they are and/or don’t care much to be. I suggest that they try and interest their partner into date/events that does not involve ‘eat ums’ instead ‘Go active’. There’s plenty to do out there. Step away from the restaurants!!! LOL

For a quick impromptu ‘Catch me my schedule is swamped’ date. I have also suggested “Smoothie bars”/coffe houses they are easy/non expensive/health con place to meet for a date. Easy no-crowds no long waiting to be seated place to meet. AND if you and your date dare to sit and talk they accomadate for that too. I know, I know oh cliche’… so i’m different. Just my 2cents.

Well, I wouldn’t call my eating habits “bad,” but I’m still at the point where gaining weight is not a hindrance to me. I probably need to put on about 10-15 pounds so I don’t shy away from rich, decadent meals.

The bigger problem is that I’m not very active. And I don’t mind quiet evenings at home. So sitting around on the couch, eating snacks and watching movies is not the way to stay fit.

Ironically, my job encouraged me to enter a 5K and I told the main squeeze and he entered too. Now we spend our weekends running and training. It’s really cool because it gives us something to actively do and it’s healthy. In addition, we’re getting to know each other better as we run. Now we are competing to see who gets the hottest bod first. :-) (we’re already pretty hot)

Good morning everyone. I believe dating can possibly make you gain weight. I personally do not have bad eating habits. I am extremely picky as to what goes in my mouth to my stomach. Most people eat because of their love for food. I eat purely for survival. I have a few favorites, but I eat because I have to. As a result, it’s easy for me to leave the desserts, fast food, etc. alone.

Morning everyone

I tend to eat more (and yes worse) when I am dating seriously than when I am alone. My ex had horrible eating habits (oh gosh I shudder to think about it) but our problem was we ate late at night alot! But I was happy and in love so I went along with the program. I was upset b/c I maintained the same size forever and then started dating him and whoosh, weight everywhere! LOL Of course when we had trouble and then decided on divorce I lost all that weight, baby weight and a few xtra pounds!

Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Good morning blogsville. I hope you all had a great weekend.

On topic: Thunder Dan I cosign 100%. I will never stop hanging with my partners tho. I think that time apart makes you better able to enjoy your partner.

I think dating can lead to unhealthy activities unless you meet a chick like Foots that likes to keep it moving. A great date can be a weekly walk at The Silver Comet or hiking thru mountains. Get physical.

I absolutely love a woman thats comfortable in the kitchen so I never have a problem with that. It saves money and is much healthier if the 2 of you can cook lite. I am so over the usual dating ritual of going to every expensive joint in the city to prove I’m interested. Come over, lets cook, chill, find out who you really are instead fo your rep.

Hi Raqi, Similac, Red and Sexy.

Sexy I used to do that, eat for survival. Then I started making a little loot and started eating for pleasure. Now I’m trying to get back to that mindset but must admit I love ice cream.

Good morning all! I definitely like to keep it moving, Truth, I love to dance. I’m not big on working out, but I like to take walks with the guy I’m dating. You do find out a lot when you have that kind of one-on-one time without distractions.

I haven’t gained weight due to dating someone, but I think it’s possible. I hear all the time about how folks get comfortable in relationships and pack on pounds. Or they don’t cut out the things that they usually did when they were single.

I’m all for dating a man with some type of physical hobby; the last guy I dated played soccer. He did go to play less when we were together though. I head that stuff off at the pass by having scheduled times for classes that I’ve already paid for. That way, I can keep doing my activities even though I’m with someone.

Morning folks!

When dating I do eat out more and work out less. I was in one relationship where we worked out together and that was great. But for the most part, dating does interfere with my regular health plans. I am a person that loves to eat good food if I go out. But when cooking and eating at home, I keep it healthy.

I always try to do this when I go out, especially at a place like Cheesecake Factory where they give you just too much dayum food. I think they’ve started to pull back a little; their portion size was ridiculous.

Diva Since dating and food are a part of our topic today, can we have a topic one day where we post our favorite healthy recipes for 2? I’d love to get some ideas in a structured format from the bloggers (list of ingredients/quantities, directions, cooking temp and time, etc).

Class update Oh my goodness!! That ballet class I took on Saturday has my calves burning two days later!! I’m definitely adding this one to my monthly to-do list!!!

Have you ever been involved with someone who had horrible eating habits?

No, not really. In most cases, it was the opposite. Dudes that ate like birds and was after me about my eating habits, which aren’t overly bad. I just eat what I want to and watch how much of it I eat. It doesn’t bother me as long as he doesn’t criticize me. But if I had a choice, I’d rather date someone with nearly the same eating habits as I have. It makes food prep SO much easier at home when we eat the same type of thing.

Hey everyone!

that’s a great idea Foots, we can get some recipe swapping in today, if you guys want. I don’t mind at all, we just have to beware of the topic making us all ravenous by noon!

I have one I can toss in the mix (no pun intended). I have to think up an official recipe because I sort of made it up, but it is always a hit with my friends and the special guys who actually got me to cook for them :)

Morning all… I would have ot say I do not gain weight when I date someone because working out at the gym is a Mon-Fri thing for me. I do it after work and plan whatever dates or activities afterwards. That allows me to eat what I want. Like Foots, I love to be active. I love to go to Stone Mountain and hike. When it’s nice outdoors I like to strap music on my arm and run the neighborhood (my friend calls me Forrest Gump). I also dance a lot..even after I work out. I come in and dance in my house for an hour…or after I eat a fatening meal I get up and dance to burn it off.

FOOTS I overslep and missed my belly dance class. I do want to check out the Risque Ballet. You make it sound so good. I love to ache after a workout…I know I worked the muscles. If you do ballroom, your calves will hurt because it’s done mostly on the toes.

I have had comments in the past about how little I eat. As you guys may remember, I am a size 4 and I don’t eat big portions of food. I eat about every 2 hours. I always eat breakfast and munch on fruit all day. I most often have heavy lunches (meat, rice, gravy and veggies)and heavy dinner. I would rather date a guy that prefers to cook at home than going to a restaurant 3x out of a week. That’s crazy to me. Truth eat your ice cream and enjoy. Simply cut back on some of the other fattening things you really don’t need to truly enjoy your ice cream and its calaories.

@ Sexy… im a all-day-muncher too. i keep healthy snacks every where. Office, home car and my gymbag so i try not to be caught ‘off guard’ during the day. My co-workers and friends say i eat like a bird. But I tell them i can eat smaller portions at meal time because i’ve eaten all day. So it balances. And if i can get back in my 4’s I’m doing really well because lately i have been on the lazy side since my work scheduled increased. I miss the conjoined multi-tasking w/ my son practices and i get out there and walk/run to get that extra work out.

good morning, all.:)

hmmm…on topic: as far as gaining weight goes, i can see how people can gain weight when a relationship is new. there’s a lot of eating at restaurants (at late hours..lol), having dessert more than usual and laying around that happens. the key is to balance it out with activities like walking in the park, hiking and…well, of course sex…lol. a gym date is a nice alterative too, that way you can eat afterwards w/less guilt..lol. meeting someone who’s active like me would be a plus since i enjoy going to the gym. meeting someone who’s a vegetarian or vegetarian-friendly would be cool too. if you guys know anywhere that fit, vegetarian men hang out, let me know.:)

Blatino, I get that ALL the time!!! Certain guys really are into dating “slim goodies” knowing that when it’s time to knock out a kid, they should be okay because they have weight to gain.

I do think that dating makes you gain weight. I am a naturally slim/slender female and it has always been difficult for me to gain weight. In the 1.5 years since I have been dating my current boyfriend, I actually have gained 10 lbs from eating out so much. I have recently had a change in my budget and haven’t been able to eat out as much and have quickly lost that weight.

Some of my female co-workers have asked me who’s been rubbing on it because it’s that obvious. Nothing else has grown but that. Any explanations…

I’m about to give you guys an appetizer dish that all will love. When you make it, most will ask about.

Pecan Cheese Ball

2 8oz pkg Cream Cheese 1 lg can Crush p’apple (drained) 1 c green onions (finely chopped) ˝ cup green pepper (finely chopped) 1 ts. Garlic powder 1 ts. Accent 1-2 cups pecans pieces finley chopped.

(You may have to chop pecans some more yourself)

Mix all ingredients (except pecans). Shape into a ball. To be honest this is hard to do for me so I simply shape mine into a meatloaf. Spread pecans on top (Best when let stand overnight in fridge)

Serve with Club House Crackers..

I usually prepare my meals throughout the week, and eat what I want on the weekends. The more I prepare and not eat out, the better results I get. During the week I keep it simple and lean:

For breakfast…….I need to do better. Usually it’s just a cup of coffee. I fix oatmeal, a protein shake, or eat a lean pocket when I get time. I’m still working on it.

For Lunch…..The meat is usually baked chicken breast or salmon. I’ll throw in a steak every now and then. I’ll add whole grain rice / baked potato and a veggie (preferably something green). I drink all water, some Gatorade, and no sodas. No bread for lunch.

Fruit and nuts are a good snack between meals.

I know my recipes sound bland and blah, but they work. I’m not that emotional when it comes to food.

@Sexy, ARed

Thanks for the tips ladies, I never thought of a gym-date, I’d be afraid of trying to do too much to impress her and end up hurting myself.

On that note, Truth, Man you got to get that cook on, dude. It’s a “special” conversation with a young lady and she can hear you cooking. Hamburgers, hot dogs, not so much. But be on the other end chopping garlic, onions, and basil to add to the tomato sauce and….yeah. They like that.

Sup y’all. Funny you should mention the cooking thing Wise. I spent part of my Saturday this weekend at Barnes & Noble buying cook books. LOL! Actually, I was waiting for Sears to patch a hole in my tire, and ended up at the bookstore. I got 3 big, hardcover cookbooks. Two from the Cooking Light magazine, and one was Betty Crocker (had one a long time ago, and lost it when I moved). I made Chicken Francois for dinner and it was delish! Low cal and low fat. Also made (check this!) low cal/low fat cream cheese brownies…ahem…from scratch. And they were soooooo good!

I love to eat out. But, it’s hectic on the waistline and the pocketbook. So, I’m trying to cook more and eat at home more often. I’m actually a pretty good cook, but since most of the time it’s just me, I don’t enjoy it that much. Too many leftovers. Now I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve, and don’t have to break out the old single woman’s staple…spaghetti…to impress a brotha. LOLOL!!

I’m sorry, I can’t really comment on the weigh gaining while dating thing, because I haven’t been on a really good date in a minute. And the last guy I was dating didn’t like to eat out because he was such a health nut. I made lasagna one night though that was the bomb. He asked next time could I make it with ground turkey instead. I just hope he realized that I used sausage also. Hey I’m from NY, what can I say? I’m not a health nut, but I’m no slob either.

Ha! @ Blatino, nothing wrong with seeking a little variety. There are several benefits to dating a “slenda tenda”, many of them can’t be mentioned in this blog…but of course I’m a little biased. ;-)

@ Dan, I have to admit in the past if a guy asked me out on a gym date I might have looked at him like he was from Mars. I have to admit I was being really lazy. However, the impression part goes both ways. If he were really into some kind of activity, I’d probably be more prone to do it. So I say go for it now. A month a go, doing 3 miles would have sent me for the oxygen tank. Now I knock it out pretty easy. A big feat for me as I’ve NEVER worked out before!

i can definitely attest to being a victim of relationship weight gain…i gained about 40 pounds when i started dating this guy that was 6’3 and 270…i had maintained at a size 10 for years…then when we starting seeing each other, i slowly started ballooning and what’s worse…did not realize the effect that it was having on me until i was 40 pounds into it…

four years later…now that i am back on the right track…nothing can sway me…not even Coach’s horrible eating habits…even though…i must say…he’s been taking note of the changes that i have made in my habits recently and i can see him making small changes as a result…

How are you ladies today? What up MLB.

Dating can put pounds on you when you reach the comfort zone. When sitting and chillin is as cool as anything else, you are more likely to eat up, let it settle, work it off, and go to sleep. A Fat Formula, because the work it off step isn’t always there…lol

Dan/Truth Cooking-the ladies won’t want to admit it, but if you are serving great food with a side of Peeda Leeda, they get hooked so quick. Afternoon all,

I had to weigh in (pun intended) as I have definitely fell victim to the dating lbs. But, I am a (self-appointed/inspiring) chef so I looooove food. I’ve pretty much maintained a size 6 by having a couple of pair of jeans that lets me know to back away from the table. I’ve always been an athlete, so it’s not a problem to bring it back by going to the gym at work, Bally’s by the crib, or the athletic club on the weekends. It’s definitely a plus to find that person who is on the same page… or at least in the same chapter. My other half has at least gained 60lbs since we’ve been together. I’ll take some blame for it because my food is definitely the bomb, but not all as he likes sweets (and I don’t bake), and sugary drinks. Also, he is an athlete, but he got hurt so….

As such is life, I think there is a balance that people can achieve or at least strive for. Decadent but not fat/calorie laden. I call it Simple Indulgence. My .02

Gaining weight triggered by dating a new prospect is a sign that the relationship is a toxic one. Some people ignore their longtime friends when a new lover comes to the picture (pro friend zone women are very good for this) but when one ignore the self and his/her own body for the sake of the relationship….a BIG disaster is around the corner.

What happened to the RED FLAGS? I been told long time ago that gaining weight is a big red flag that a relationship is detrimental….Are we that needy for love?

I can’t say that being a relationship caused me to gain much weight. I think the natural progression of age has caused my hips to spread just a tad wee bit more. Back from lunch. Since we are talking food today. How about i had Singapore noodles w/Thai Chicken for lunch and it was good. Anyone with a quick recipe to share?

Mochalatte I’m a Dallas fan also, yes they SPANKED IT!!! Great game great game…expecially after my beloved Falcons lost. Also the salon spot i mentioned does cater to women.

Kinderbabe A Vegetarian Dating Service…ookay. Let me know about that one! LOL.

Mocha wasn’t that a nice a* wuppin Chi-Town took last night? Dallas made them look like kids. Say what you like about T.O. but that dude is BAD.

Early prediction: Oakland Raiders to the playoffs. This may be the best year for football in years.

Amen for you Cemeeli. I have gone natural and I can’t think of a thing to do with my hair besides braids. I need to be up in that spot quick!

I hear you about the Falcons too. I don’t even know what to say I’m so disappointed, but it’s like my mom said, “No one in the league wants to be the one to say they lost to the Falcons.”

Mochalatte I really want to do the kickboxing because i have a lot of pent up aggression that tends to come out in the form of drunken I hate you text messages. LOL So a little punching and kicking will definitely put me on my way to a more positive healthy mental future. hehehehe I’ve also started reading The Game of Life by Florence Scovvel Shinn and will start The Secret thereafter. So i’m trying to gain some more positive habits mentally and physically.

I try to be pretty health conscious, but sometimes you find yourself eating wherever your man, or even friends, eat. Like last night, when I downed a double order of hash browns at WaHo and topped it off with a cherry sprite. Not so great.

However, I would NEVER blame a man (or anyone else) for my weight gain. It’s my job to say no if it’s not good for me. No one else is responsible for the way I look!

Truth…the Raider’s in the playoffs??? That would be something. My Cali friends would be sending you ‘shot outs’ for you saying that about the Raiders. LOL. Let them tell it, they hate my Falcons. But they don’t ever come around me with that Falcons bashing foolishness. I set em straight ‘bout their lil ladies i meant…Raidies.

I feel you Slim I have just recently got off the “I hate you so much right now” text messaging plan. I started working out to relieve the stress of it all and to take my mind somewhere else. I figure if you thought I was cute then, just wait a d*mn minute, because I’m about to turn up the heat in this… Well you know what I’m saying. So I’m trying to get used to eating breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks in between so I can start speeding up the metabolism and really kick this thing into high gear. Kickboxing sounds hot!! I’m in D’ville though and I doubt they have anything like that out here. If I hear anything I’ll let you know though. Tell me how the books go, I’m always looking for recommendations. Similac that kind of talk strains our relationship. However, you’ll be apologizing before years end. The Raiders already had a great defence last year and now the offense is moving, and Russell hasn’t suited up yet.

The Falcons have been clipped, they’re thru. Its a wrap. If they win 3 games it’ll be a good season. I think we can set up a scrimmage with a local high school team, if we tell the high schoolers to go easy on them. LOL I think there was 3 tailgaters yesterday.

A great book is “The Secret”. If you want to know why you keep attracting what you do read it. Hopefully it won’t hurt those feelings.

If you scheduled a daytime date, would you feel obligated to spend the entire day AND night together?

Diva Yep. Night time dates have a definite cutoff time. With day dates, it’s not so clear and it’s something that has to be specified. If you’re to the point where spending the whole day together is a good idea, then it’s fine. But in the beginning stages, I stick more to the evening hours.

I also like the anticipation of waiting all day to see him. And quite frankly, I just look better at night. Something about the way the sleep wears off my face. Kinda weird…

I believe being in a relationship can make you lose weight. Knowing that I needed to lose weight for health reasons was already strong on my mind. But when I got into a relationship, I found myself looking at my relationship thinking, “What a handsome couple we make, if only I was 30 pounds lighter.” So my motivation was health first and then looks. Maybe it sounds a little vain but I wouldn’t want to look bad beside my man and vice versa. I guess it depends on if you are happy with yourself or if you know a change needs to be made.

I have done some daytime dates…usually on weekends and then they are more ‘active’ in that they tend to be at a park, an activity (ball game or museum)…..however, those are usually further into the ‘relationship’ stage. I think we as people are just so into what ever we are doing in our daily lives that ‘dating’ is sort of superfulous to it all, at least in the beginning, so it is more like to be dinner and talking to see if there is some merit.
