Love is a mix tape

A friend of mine bought me a great book (that I have yet to read, sorry M!) that has the greatest title: Love Is a Mix Tape: Life and Loss, One Song at a Time.

As soon as I read that title, I immediately reflected on the many experiences I have gone through in life. The loves, the losses, the highs and lows. IF I wanted to chronicle them all with music, what an ecletic soundtrack it would be!

If you can think of past experiences, what songs or music helped you handle all the crazy emotions?

I know a lot of us are using ipods and mp3s, but if you wanted to make a mixtape for that special someone, what would you put on it? What kind of sweet messages would you want to send?

Is there a certain song that brings you right back to a specific place and time with someone special?

Isn’t it fun to get all nostalgic about these moments? After you have learned the love lessons, and loved hard, do you ever feel as if you could actually write a love song?

Hi WD and All

is there a certain song that brings you right back to a specific place and time with someone special?

‘Current (hopefully LAST lady)’. “God Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts

‘Runaway Bride Wannabe’ “What Was I Thinking” Dierks Bentley

‘The many over four and a half years’ “We’ve Got Tonight” Bob Segar and the Silver Bullet Band

“My Ex Wife” (I have to think on that)

‘The many over next two years’ “Love the One Your With” Stephen Stills

‘First girlfriend’ “We’ve Only Just Begun” The Carpenters

I was out of town yesterday and will be again tomorrow, but glanced this morning to yesterday’s blogs…thanks to several of you for your comments. Yeah we are back together…she is just fine and a wonderful lady.

Mow-nin Yawl

There are many songs that take me back to a particular place in time whether it was a good memory, bad memory, or just a regular ole memory. Call me crazy but sometimes I’ll pull out all my old pictures and throw on some tunes and have a good old reminence-laughing-crying session. I’m one of those people that tend to save things. So if I were to ever get married, I’m not sure how i’d feel about throwing away some of the things I have.

Yeah I could write a love song and have attempted it many times. Poems are pretty much songs and I have plenty of those. Love is a very strange thing. Something that can make you feel so good and bring so much to your life can also do the extreme opposite. It’s one of those things that can bring out every emotion a human can experience. I’m pretty sure I’m reaching my blog length limit, so i’ll chime in again later

Laney If you’re lurking, I hope you’re feeling okay. If you feel up to it, peek your head in so we can see how your recovery is coming along.

Morning Folks!!

I’m feeling a little crunchy this morning, but I’ll try to keep it positive….

I loooovvvveee this song, and everytime I used to hear it, it would remind me of what I didn’t have in my then current relationship. Now, when I hear it, I think of how I will not settle for anything less.

Lyfe Jennings- Must Be Nice

1st Verse: Must be nice Having someone who understands the life you live Must be nice Having someone who’s slow to take and quick to give Must be nice Having someone who sticks around when the rough times get thick someone who’s smile is bright enough to make the projects feel like a mansion Must be nice Having someone who loves you despite your faults Must be nice Having someone who talks the talk but also walks the walk Must be nice Having someone who understands that a thug has feelings too someone who loves you for sho’ you just remember to never let ‘em go

Chorus: Even when your hustling days are gone She’ll be by your side still holding on/Even when those 20’s stop spinning and all those gold-digging women disappear she’ll still be here

Morning Blog:

I have already made a mixtape! It’s called My Love: Anthology One, Two and the Ultimate Anthology. Well actually, I guess it’s three mixtapes. It was back from the time when I was with my ex-hubby. I’ve always felt that my life is one big mixtape of songs. When I’m in love I think everyone knows it because it shows on my MP3. Currently my song is “Find Myself in You” by Brian McKnight. It’s simply the best song right now for how I”ve been feeling lately. ‘Bout to listen to it now.

Oh, and my all time favorite…..Jesus is Love by Lionel Richie and the Commodores. It isn’t related to a relationship….well actually it does, the greatest love of all (hey, that was a song too!)…that of our Father. But I would like this song sang at my wedding…one of these days.

Good morning all. This is a cute topic.

Is there a certain song that brings you right back to a specific place and time with someone special? Yep.(smiles)…and they are attached to different people for different reasons. They are:

Keith Sweat-Right and a Wrong Way

Boys to Men-End of the Road

Jagged Edge-Gotta Be

John Legend- So High

See…now you got me thinking about folks(wink)

SeanJ I agree with you on the Mary J tip. Most of her albums take me back to some times, some real serious times. It’s like she was there with me feeling the same way. Also, Brandy’s Album Never Say Never had a lot of cuts on it that said what i was feeling:

Almost Doesn’t Count, Have You Ever, Tomorrow

Good Morning Everyone!!

For my college boyfriend this song came to mind:

Should I even listen Should I even try Will I just be hearing the same old lines

Baby See it doesn;t matter What you say this time Cause our whole relationship Is built on one lie You say things aren’t the way they seem But still you can’t come straight with me

How can you think that you’re in love When you don’t know the meaning of

Love Shoulda brought you, Brought you, Home last night You shoulda been with me Shoulda been right by my side Baby If you cared anything for me Then love woulda brought you To me last night

Gotta hand it to ya Ya bad me there for a while I was so in love with you I couldn’t see past your smile Now I smell the coffee Boy, I got a wake up call And it left the message That you just don’t care at all You can’t expect me to Believe that she doesn’t mean anything You say that you love only me Your kinda lovin’ my darling I just don’t need

Good Morning All,

I love all types of music and depending on my mood the music of my life that day can change. But lets see what is on the Ipod of my life…

In highschool there was New Edition’s…Popcorn Love and Mr. Telephone Man. Song that causes me the most anxiety and a flood of memories good and bad from that time period.. Keith Sweat’s Right and A Wrong Way

In my BMK (before my kid) days it was Whitney Houston, Brandy, and Mariah Carey who played in the key of my life with So emotional and Sitting up in my room Cant let go

Upon the birth of my son Aretha Franklin’s —-Natural Woman and Regina Bell’s If I Could

At this stage the road is filled with rough patches in love The First Cut is the Deepest by Sheryl Crow and ** In Repair by John Mayer.

Someone always makes me think of the classic and smooth songs Fever sung by Shirley Horn and Feeling Good with Nina Simone Heck ever now and then there is some Black Sweat with Prince.

But my hope is to find the one that will make me sing along with Heather Headley to He Is or Your’re My Everything with Anita Baker.

I recall one time when my ex-SO had just taken me to my limit, I made a mix tape that chronicled my feelings for him from start to finish. I started out with sweet songs and progressively got more angry. I wish i had the tape so i could list all the songs on there for you all. I’m sure you’d find it funny. I remember that I had Toni Braxton’s Just Be a Man About it lol

Lol! Mix tapes! Reminds me of “High Fidelity”.

I am the world’s worst maker of mix tapes, but an ex girlfriend made one for me when I was in high school that was perfect. “I Can’t Make You Love Me” Bonnie Raitt, “Baby You Can Sleep While I Drive” Melissa Etheride, “Constant Craving” KD Lang, “The Last Day of our Acquaintance” Sinead O’Connor…those are the highlights anyway.

And on another unrelated note, the xbf rang me this morning and wanted to know if he did all these things he wanted to do and “proved” himself to me, would I take him back? I haven’t the heart to tell him I’m seeing someone as I would feel terrible about the consequences. Help!

Lyrics that symbolize what I felt when I first started dating my current SO:

Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam

    Baby, I know you’re wondering

Why I won’t go over to your place Cause I’m not to sure about how you feel

So I’d rather go at my own pace

And I know and you know that if we get together

    Emotions will grow to work

And I may do something I might regret the next day

    And end up hurt

I threw a Bday party for my SO…and I put together the mixed CDs….He didn’t like any of my CDs. But what was funny, one of my favorite songs is All Cried Out and when that came on EVERY female in the joint starting singing and we formed a circle. The men started running to the box to turn it off….My brother-in-law was like…all y’all been thru some things

All alone on a Sunday morning Outside I see the rain is falling Inside I’m slowly dying But the rain will hide my crying, crying, crying

And you, don’t you know my tears will burn the pillow Set this place on fire ‘cause I’m tired of your lies All I needed was a simple “Hello” But the traffic was so noisy that you could not hear me cry

I, I gave you my love in vain My body never knew such pleasure My heart never knew such pain And you, you leave me so confused Now I’m all cried out over you

Oh, you. Im over you, oooh.

(Paul Anthony) Never wanted to see things you way I had to go astray, oh, why was I such a fool?

(Bowlegged Lou) Now I see that the grass is greener [why oh why] Is it too late for me to find my way home, How could I be so wrong? [Leavin’ me all alone]

(Lisa Lisa) Don’t you know the hurt will cause an inferno Romance up in flames, why should I take the blame You were the one who left me neglected [I’m so sorry] Apology not accepted, add me to the broken hearts you’ve collected

I, I gave you all of me (gave me all of you) How was I to know you would weaken so easily I, I don’t know what to do I’m all cried out [I’m all] over you [I’m cried out too]

How Could The One I Gave My Heart To, Break My Heart So Bad? How Could The One Who Made Me Happy, Make Me Feel So Sad? Wont Somebody Tell Me? So I Can Understand. If You Love Me, How Could You Hurt Me Like That? How Could The One I Gave My World To, Throw My World Away? How Could The One Who Said I Love You, Say The Things You Say? How Could The One I Was So True Too, Just Tell Me Lies? How Could The One I Gave My Heart To, Break This Heart Of Mine? Tell Me…….. How Could You Be So Cold To Me? When I Gave You Everything. All My Love, All I Had Inside. How Could you Just Walk Out The Door? How Could You Not Love Me Anymore? I Thought We Had Forever. I Cant Understand. How Could The One I Shared My Dreams With, Take My Dreams From me? How Could The Love That Brought Such Pleasure, Bring Such Misery? Wont Somebody Tell Me? Somebody Tell Me Please. This goes out to all of my EXesssss….we still cool

    Hello baby how ya’ been,

nice to see your face again

Strange to see you coming ‘round,

when you’re the one who put me down

We were such a happy pair,

but then another man was there

So forgive me I don’t understand, just what you want from me

As you can see my life’s been good I moved the family out the neighborhood

And all my dreams I’ve realized, to think you said it was a waste of time

It’s never hard to make new friends, when you’re making Benjamins

Now did I hear you say again… You’re still thinking of me?

Do you feel like dying, do you break down crying Do you fall down on your knees Don’t want to go on living, does your world start spinning When you think of me

Good morning bloggers, especially the 1’s (SEXI and SLIM). I remember when Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton were out in the early nineties. I was going through a divorce and those songs seemed to sum up the whole experience. I clearly remember one sunday afternoon, it was a beautiful day, I was watching football and listening (Mariah Carey came on) to the radio and realizing the pain of the divorce was less than the pain of being married. It was such a great experience. Whenever I hear Mariah now I think back to those times, she is kind of empowering to me.

Also, I was dating a chick in 2000. I really loved her but she started the lets get married thing. I heard the song by Lenny Williams ” Cause I Love You”. I remember realizing it was going to hurt but I wasn’t going to marry her. She wasn’t the one. I went and got 2 copies of that song, 1 for the car and 1 for the house. It helped me through the whole thing.

Looking back both of those experiences were turning points in my life. It sounds crazy but sometimes the blessing in life are not what you gain but what you loose.

    When you’re going through a Break-Up turn on Lauryn Hill’s Ex-Factor

It could all be so simple

But you’d rather make it hard

Loving you is like a battle

And we both end up with scars

Tell me, who I have to be

    To get some reciprocity see

No one loves you more than me

    And no one ever will

Is this just a silly game That forces you to act this way

Forces you to scream my name Then pretend that you can’t stay

Tell me, who I have to be To get some reciprocity see

No one loves you more than me And no one ever will

Hook: No matter how I think we grow You always seem to let me know

    It ain’t workin’

    It ain’t workin’

And when I try to walk away

You’d hurt yourself to make me stay

They said I wouldn’t make it, They said I wouldn’t be here today. They said I wouldn’t amount to anything. But I’m glad to say, that i’m on my way, And I’m going more and more each day. For there were many that started out with me, But now they’ve gone astray. But I’m still holding on. I’m still holding on I’m still holding to his hand. You see when i was young, I gave God my hand, And I told him to lead the way. For the road has been rough And the goings been mighty tough, still I ain’t going Nowhere, I’m right here to stay. For I’ve been talked about and Lord I’ve been criticized. I had to wipe many tears from my eyes. But I’m still holding on I’m still holding on. I’m still holding on to his hand.

But, I will say that everytime I hear When Will I See You Smile by BBD, I think of my college boyfriend that looked like a younger Cuba Gooding, Jr. In fact, he took me to see Boyz in tha Hood, too. LOL!

Blog question: What’s on your get tha draws mixtape?

On the blue eyed soul tip. George Michaels “One More Try” was it. I had gotten out of the army and went in the national guard to make money while I was in college. On drill weekends I would get up at 4am to get to drill and that song would always play. The roads were empty except for George and me. I have the Best of George Michael DVD (Just listened to the song again, still makes my eyes water) and realized it wasn’t so much the song but the emotion it brought. At that time everything I touched turned to gold. It was amazing to be so lucky. I would tell people you could drop me in the middle of the desert and I’d make it home. I really believed that. That song brings all that back. My luck still hasn’t run out. Life is good.

Also, anything with Anita or Regina Belle is hot.

I Danced to (solo): I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Standing in the middle of the bed)

I Danced to (duo): Come Share My Love (Last night in the shower)

I was serenaded (romantically): Kiss From A Rose (For Valentine’s Day)

I was serenaded (playfully): I Wanna Sex You Up

Til you do me right..only wrong is gonna come to you nothing good is gonna come until you change your ways..until you change your evil ways.

For the best SO I ever had (at 19) Alone With You..Tevin Campbell We were holding hands in the park We had to hurry home before it starts I can’t wait to see your smile again and I love the time we spend….

I just want to be alone with you and there’s nothing else I’d rather do I just want the chance I had again..just us two until the end.

Sexione now you know I don’t want to have to start testifying up in here! Those songs too have a way of touching your spirit but it has me feeling so full at times that you get overwhelmed with emotion. All I can do is be blessed for what all i’ve been through and where I am now.

Center of my JOY is another one for me. Jesus, You’re the center of my joy.

All that’s good and perfect comes from You.

You’re the heart of my contentment.

Hope for all I do Jesus, You’re the center of my joy.

    When I’ve lost my direction,

You’re the compass for my way.

    You’re the fire and light.

When nights are long and cold, In sadness,

You’re my laughter That shatters all my fears When I’m all alone, Your hand is there to hold.

    Morning folks!

This is a great topic and I honestly have too many songs on my mixtape (ipod playlist) to mention.

The last time I made a ‘mixtape’ for a particular person was in 2002. Won’t ever do that again, because now I can’t listen to any of those songs without thinking of him and those thoughts aren’t very pleasant.

I’m loving the songs mentioned here. ‘Come Share My Love’ - I wish itunes would get that song. That and some Phyllis Hyman music…I guess I could stop being lazy and search elsewhere, LOL.

The song I hope to sing to my husband to be at our wedding is Just the Way You Are (the Diana Krall version). Then, I’ll sing That’s All.

My mixtapes usually included some Prince, Janet Jackson and Jill Scott. I liked Maxwell until the radio stations here wore him out! Lawd, if I hear Fortunate one-mo-gain! Lauryn Hill’s Ex Factor brings back some bad memories. LOL!

What up blog Said while reminiscing.

This has taken me back to some serious old girlfriends. Each of these songs has a girl attached.

    High School:

How deep is your love. K. Sweat Vision of love M. Carey Love makes things Happen Babyface and Pebbles Boys to men slow side Anita Baker When two are in love Prince Edward J Slow jam mix tape

    College:

    Adore Prince Jodeci
Bump and Grind R. Kelly Theres no me with out you Toni Braxton Mary J. Blige (Whats the 411) Edward J. Slow jam mix tape.

    On but off topic

When I was in high school, and Blockbuster was very popular, and Midnight love used to come on BET, I would record the videos. What was so wild about it, was that it was edited with no commecials, and only the popular slow jam videos. So as soon as the Blockbuster movie would go off, I would put the slow jam video tape in the VCR. Talking about some heavy petting, and listening for my moms footsteps all at the same time.
    True Story.

Man this topic is going to have some people using google to find old names.

Call me crazy…It could be the New Yorker in me, but sometimes I don’t want to hear all the lovey dovey stuff. So, on my soundtrack I need one love song that keeps it real-It is ‘You’re all I need to Get By’ by Mary J. Blige and Method Man.

Favorite Verse: I’m a walk these dogs so we can live in a fat a* crib with thousands of kids. Word life- don’t need a ring to be my wife. Just be there for me and I’m a make sho’ we be livin’ in the f’n lap of luxury. I’m realizing that you did not have to *mess with me. But you did. Now, I’m goin’ all out kid. I got mad love to give. You my *.

Translation: I’m going to work 24/7 to make sure you have everything you want and need. I’m doing it for you and our children. We don’t need the special bond that we share validated by some legal document. Just stay by my side and I will make sure that you want for nothing. I realize that when we met you had other options that you could have pursued. But, you saw something in me that no other cat had. Your love and support is motivating me to be a better man. You are my woman.

    That’s my joint.

    Karen White’s Superwoman

Early in the morning I put breakfast at your table,

and make sure that your coffee has its sugar and cream…

Your eggs are overeasy, your toast unlikely,

all that’s missing is your morning kiss that used to greet me…

Now you say the juice is sour, it used to be so sweet,

and I can’t help but to wonder if you’re talking about me…

We don’t talk the way we used to talk, it’s hurting so deep,

I’ve got my pride, I will not cry, but it’s making me weak…

    I’m not your superwoman…

I’m not the kind of girl that you can let down, and think that everything is okay…

    Boy I am only human…

This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me…

I fought my way through the rush hour trying to make it home just for you…

I want to make sure that your dinner will be waiting for you…

But when you get there, you just tell me you’re not hungry at all,

you said you’d rather read the paper and you don’t want to talk…

You like to think that I’m just crazy when I say that you’ve changed,

I’m convinced I know the problem, you don’t love me the same…

You’re just going through the motions and you’re not being fair,

I’ve got my pride, I will not cry, still I can’t help but care!!!

I’m not your superwoman…(oh no no no!!!)

I’m not the kind of girl that you can let down and think that everything is okay…

Boy I am only human…(I’m only human!!!)

This girl needs more than occasional hugs as a token of love from you to me…

If you’re having drinks at the crib, throw this on and leave the TV off, get close on the couch and just chill…The music will do the rest, plus she’ll think you’re all cultured…You don’t have to tell her a friend hipped you to it…hahahahahahaha

P.S. Please don’t use Coltrane for evil purposes…Use this only to get the drawls of a chick you wanna spend a long time with.

    Good morning Everyone!

Past experiences The song that galvanized me into moving on from my last relationship was India.arie’s “Heart of the Matter.” I got a call that I didn’t want to hear…but it wasn’t from an old friend. I am not an India fan, but 107.5 started playing it at the right time for me. The song is about forgiveness and letting go; re-learning the things I thought I’d figured out about love and relationships. I thought he was my last, but apparently God had another and absolutely better plan. Just goes to show that when you think you know it all, you have a lot more to learn.

Interestingly, a male acquaintance took me to the O’Jays concert in February. My heart was still tender from the break up. When Jeffrey Osborne sang “Love Ballad”, I had to fight back tears…

It is too early to apply a song that fully defines my current relationship. Perhaps “Getting to Know You”? LOL! If things continue positively, perhaps “Livin’ for the Love of You” by The Isley Brothers. Possible sweet messages: Body & Soul Anita Baker. A Song for You Donnie Hathaway. We Both Deserve Each Other’s Love Jeffrey Osborne. Just Because Anita Baker. Lovin’ You by Minnie Riperton. Oh, I can think of lots more! LOL!

Have a Powerful, Productive, Prosperous and Positive Day!!!

Ah… I love this topic. Although, I’m a bit of an oddball, so I tend to gravitate toward the comically bitter breakup and/or sexual frustration songs — always more entertaining to me than the sappy stuff. So, tops on my countdown would be:

For my ex-wife: “One More Night” by Stars — a great little tune about break-up sex…

    “…He starts with her back,

    ‘Cause that’s what he sees

And when she’s breaking his heart,

    She still f@#ks like a tease…”

For those annoying dry spells: “No P#$$y Blues” by Grinderman — pretty much speaks for itself…

And, my one sappy one — for my current SO: “God Only Knows” by the Beach Boys

Also that Angie Stone cut where she put old boy up till he got his mojo going “don’t worry about them brotha’s up and down the block”. Thats nice.

How in the hell are yawll remembering all the words to these songs?

Elzabeth Withers is now playing “Simple Things”. Thats a nice cut too.

Hey yall. Hope everyone is well.

Randy I never knew you were a granddaddy…..

When I was like in 6th grade, I had a crush on a boy named Michael. He was in the 7th grade. So I made him a tape now I can’t remember everything that was on it but the first song was I’ll be dreaming by Vanessa Williams.

My ex-friend that I lived in Lyon with our theme song was Till the Cops Come Knocking by Maxwell.

At my wedding, I walked down the isle on, a song by Amel Larrieux called Your Eyes perfect wedding song if you’ve never heard it.

After we divorced I couldn’t stop listening to I’m Done by Tweet Great Song

Then when I thought I wanted to be back with the ex Missing You by Mary J. was playing all the time and You Should’ve Known Better by Monica

Oh and I’m sure you all have heard of Syleena Johnson, well she had this song that R.Kelly wrote that was never even played on the radio but it’s called I’m Your Woman I played the hellz out of that. That’s a bad song.

Now I’m in a beautiful relationship with a wonderful man, I really couldn’t ask for more. It’s still so new and so sweet I wish I could just bottle it up, stick it in the freezer and preserve it…. So needless to say er song I hear I think about him. You name it and I think about him. It could bePop Lock It Drop It and I’ll be like I remember when “HE” said such and such while this song was playing on the radio.

If that is the case why is she complaining about a man that’s just witnessed a something that awful. On top of that she started talking to another dude. That’s very selfish song to me.

Jewel I have something from Nancy Wilson but not sure it is that….honey I have some reallllly old stuff but so timeless it applies right now…for example Why dont you do right?

You had plenty of money in 1922. You let other women make a fool of you. Why don’t you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here, get me some money too.

You’re sittin down and wonderin what it’s all about. If you ain’t got no money, they will put you out. why don’t you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here, get me some money too.

Now if you had prepared 20 years ago. You wouldn’t be a wanderin now from door to door. Why don’t you do right, like some other men do?

Get out of here, get me some money too.

Get out of here, get me some money too.

Why don’t you do right, like some other men do?

Believe it or not, that is a real song. I’ve actually got it on CD. I don’t know what the Kinchafoonee Cowboys are doing now, but they used to do concerts on college campuses all over the south. They were quite popular with college kids back in the 90’s. I saw them a couple of times at Georgia Southern while I was in school there.

Okay, I guess I do have at least one other sappy song — “In Your Eyes”, Peter Gabriel — from that 80’s movie, “Say Anything” where John Cusak is standing outside the chic’s window w/ the boom box over his head, blasting this song. The movie itself didn’t do much for me, personally, but it did my g/f at the time, ‘cos shortly after the movie was over I lost my virginity to that song. ;)

We talked all night about life, the world…it was so sensual. After a while we both just sort of lay there in the dark not even talking. Eventually we gave each other massages but not your average run of the mill massage because we barely touched each other. We discovered nerves we didn’t know we had…that was the best love making i ever experienced that wasn’t physical.

    Truth,

I don’t think I’ll ever be a city slicker. Atlanta is just too busy for me. I just hate all the traffic, and the houses being so close to each other. I’d rather have a nice big yard for my kids to play in. As for GSU, it has changed a lot since I was there. I don’t remember a lot of building while I was there other than the Technology building and the College of Business Administration building. I remember “The Pines” though. Don’t know if it’s still there or not, but me & my friends used to go in there about once a week to get pizza. I’ve only been to Statesboro once in the last 6 years. I went with my brother to a baseball game a couple months ago. I only saw a small part of the campus, but I was shocked that they had Herty drive blocked now so that you can’t drive from Sweetheart Circle down past Hanner. You can only go to the turn in for the baseball field. From there to Hanner it’s pedestrian traffic only. Also found out they have a campus bus system now.

I managed to catch a few games on TV last year, and it’s totally different now that we’re no longer running the option. It may be better in the long run, but I sure will miss seeing the option. It was a thing of beauty.

I moved up to Acworth about 7 years ago. It wasn’t so bad at the time. I still didn’t have as big of a yard as I’d like, but at least it had a small town feel. That’s all but gone now though. I don’t know what I’ll do. I work in IT, so I almost have to be near a big city.

Music is a powerful medium. It’s my therapy. It’s amazing how certain songs take you back to a particular moment in time. For me, that first CD by Next with Butta love and the other cut they had off of the Curtis Blow Christmas Rapping beat. Welcome to Nextacsy was the name of the album I believe. When that disk first dropped, I was dating this chick Karen. She was a teacher in Miami at the time, but was originally from Chicago. Fly, fine, chocolate sista, that was mad cool. I used to love her joyful spirit and always had fun hanging out with her. This one weekend my cousin and I took her and one of her friends to the Keys. It was all spontaneous nothing planned or packed. She asked If I had that Next CD. I had only heard the few cuts that they played on the radio. We stopped and bought a copy and played it on the ride down. That music set the mood for the whole weekend. We got a suite in Islamorada and watched to sunset over the ocean (Next still vibing in the background). Midnight strolls on the beach, constant love making by candle light, we fell in love that weekend. The next morning I took her shopping. We walked hand in hand through the quaint sea side village shops. We had lunch then hit the Tiki bar behind Holiday Isles. Did the jet skis, parasailing the whole nine. It was something just special and blessed about that weekend. It still ranks in my top five best weekends ever. Every time I hear any song on that CD I think of Karen. Ironically, years later our paths crossed and we almost said simultaneously…..” you remember that weekend in the Keys?”

I like the topics this week Wise. I love all kinds of music but there are a few that I keep in the changer at home when I am trying to set the mood. I’ll share a few that come to mind…

Dave Hollister (Chicago 85) LSG Rome (1st CD)

I have a few break up songs too. NCgirl you had me LOL with the Orange Juice Jones earlier. I like “Seperated” by Avant.

A guy goes to the supermarket and notices an Attractive woman waving at him. She says hello.

He’s rather taken aback because he can’t place Where he knows her from. So he says, “Do you Know me?” To which she replies, “I think you’re The father of one of my kids.”

Now his mind travels back to the only time he Has ever been unfaithful to his wife and says, “My God, are you the stripper from my bachelor Party that I made love to on the pool table With all my buddies watching while your Partner whipped my butt with wet celery?” She looks into his eyes and says calmly, “No, I’m your son’s teacher

Jake Hey sweetie, how are you today? You must have known I needed those, thanks. hugs and kisses….it is one of those days

Speaking of being appreciated. There’s an older guy here that has made it his business to “appreciate” me every day. He is always nice and polite, and has not (yet) crossed any lines, but I can see it in his face every time he sees me. He’s 55 and really physically not my type, but he has a very nice personality, and we have had some funny and interesting chats. I’m just waiting for his courage to grow into him revealing his true thoughts……but if it never happens I will be happy, because I would never want to hurt his feelings (not that I would have to). Just interesting….

Dam Dr Kym now that your a G.S. alum I’m going to have to take back all those bad thoughts I had about. LOL

All the alums, do they still have the smokehouse? We had some Delta’s and AKA’s that lived next to each other and we’d go over there an play Bu@@SH@@. Did you ever play that? I lost and was drunk for 3 days. I still get a headache thinking about it.

Dushaun you could take satans daughter to the keys and turn it into a romantic weekend. Great food, alot to play with and plenty of water. Reminiscing. That is a beautiful spot.

Bubba Acworth, you might as well be in Tennessee. You can’t outrun the city sprawl. It will always catch you. It sounds like your married w/fam. Did you get an atlien or did you import from Vidalia?

I got a funny mix tap story, wanna hear it? Here it go.

So, in high school one of my boys hadnt handle his biz yet. 10th grade, he was dating this gal for a while, ballerina broad, tight. So it was finally gonna be the weekend for it and all the crew new (small private school with 9 black kids in the upper school) it was bout to popping. So me and my other boy decided we would make a mixtape. We had all the slow jam joints from 1992. Even some local joints. Then as a joke we threw on

Cheryll Pepsi Riley - Thanks for my child

Our boy said when that joint came on he was in the midst of the downstroke and they both looked at each other like “wait, something aint right”

WD Youain’tknow?!? LOLOL! SJ I was crushed when I found out Brown Sugar was about weed. I also thought it was about a woman, and thought it was such a cool, sweet song. I had Prince’s 1999 and Purple Rain albums (notice I said album, and not CD) at the same time, and I used to listen to all of the nasty songs like, Darling Nikki and DMSR turned down real low so my parents couldn’t hear me singning along…keep in mind that they bought me the albums for Christmas, and my dad is a music junkie like me…my dumb butt thought they didn’t know what Prince was saying, when it was really me! When I was in the pro’s (i.e. professional bachelor) music was an integral part of my game plan. One of my favorite moves was I’d have a young lady at the spot and she was deciding between going home or to my bedroom. I would often say “baby, why don’t you just relax for a minute, let me pour you another glass of wine……I got something I want you to hear” Fella’s I’m about to hip yall to some real playa shyt. If you’re ever in that situation, Throw on that Marvin Gaye Till Tomorrow it’s on that Midnight Love album. That’s the ultimate ”Girl, please stay” jam. If you don’t have it in your collection, get it immediately. That one cut has sealed a many a deal for me. It starts off with Marvin just talking. Saying “Baby why you gotta go?”

“Honey, if you leave me I’ll go crazy I’ll still care ‘Til tomorrow comes girl I love you Baby, Baby, yeah Baby Oh, if you have to go I won’t say no more I’ll just shed a tear When you’re gone And wish you were here”

Man, let me tell you, let her sip that wine while you light some candles, then grab her by the hand and slow dance with her. Put that thang on repeat and slow dance her azz right to the bedroom.

My sister once said that Prince should have changed his name to just SEX. Period. I had an album cover that I kept hid from my parents of Prince that my bf Chuck had given to me. One day we were in the kitchen and she said “‘Raqi’ didn’t you have sex in your closet.” You should have seen the look on my father’s face. I was 18 years old. To this day she claims that Chuck gave me that cover to prime me because we did have sex not to long after that. After I swore my father down that that girl was lying.

    R. Kelly did a remake called “Sadie” on his 12 Play CD.

Some of the lyrics: Early one Sunday morning / Breakfast was on the table / There was no time to eat / She said to me boy hurry to Sunday school / Filled with the long of glory we learned the holy story / She’ll always have her dreams / Despite the things / This troubled world can bring.

    CHORUS

Oh Sadie don’t you know we love you sweet Sadie

Place No one above you sweet Sadie

    Well Well Well

    Living in the past

Sometimes it seems so funny, no money can turn your life around

Sweeter than cotton candy / Stronger than papas’ old Brandy/ Always that needed smile / Once in awhile she would break down and cry / Sometimes she’d be so happy / Being with us and daddy / Standing the worst of times / Breaking the binds with just a simple song

Does anyone know who did the original track?

“I know it’s late, I know you’re weary I know your plans don’t include me Still here we are, both of us lonely Longing for shelter from all that we see Why should we worry, no one will care girl Look at the stars so far away We’ve got tonight, who needs tomorrow? We’ve got tonight babe Why don’t we stay?

@ LDD….to be honest…the personal and the professional relationship would be handle differently..i would really make sure that they can be seperate before i can would even consider going in together…we would have to be good friends and able to turn OFF and be lovers after work hours…and the way things are these days..you really have to right out aggreements incase things take a turn for the worse..but if u can pull it off..go for it…it can be a beautiful thing…being a power couple..

    Mint Condition Pretty Brown Eyes

Pretty brown eyes. You know I see you. It’s a disguise the way you treat me.

You keep holding on. To your thoughts of rejection. If you’re with me you’re secured.

You keep telling me. That your time is always taken. But I keep seeing you out alone.

    Truth, Bubba, Slim

I spent many a day and night (wink) at GSU. Man you had young women who had their own apartments and visitation in the dorms. I went to Savannah State 91-96 (No visitation, and not many women with apts back then) so we would come up all the time. It was like fishing in a barrel. And I don’t even want to talk about players ball. New cuda makes you find gas money. Our riding songs up there used to be:

    Goodie mob (Soul Food)

    2Pac (all eyes on me)

For Real You brought back a helluva memory with that “Just to be Close to You” joint. I’ll never forget it. That was the first song I ever slow dragged to. Her name was Renee’ Archer. I was like 11 or 12. My older sister and another neighborhood girl had a birthday party. All the kids there were in the 10th or 11th grade. A few kids my age showed up. That song came on and all the big kids started paring up and grinding to the music. I was standing next to my homeboy Twan. Renee’ and Regina, who were our age, were right next to us. We knew we had to ask them to dance. I was so nervous my heart was about to burst out of my chest. He made his move and started slow dancing with Regina and I did the same with Renee’. I was so nervous I got off the beat and my rhythm was off. I’ll never forget, she said “You’re going too fast” I was embarrassed. My homeboy took up for me and said “Naw…..you going too slow”. I remember that entire scene like it was yesterday. Every time I hear Just to be close to you it takes me back to that party. Now that I think of it, the last time I saw Renee’ she was big as a house with about five kids and no man and my dawg Twan is doing a life bid without the possibility of parole.

Dr Kym, you’re welcome. I listen to lots o’different things myself. Currently back into the “folk” scene with Great Big Sea and a bit of Nickel Creek (keeping in line with the blog - “The Lighthouse” from them).

For the cheese factor? Those hot little boys in Il Divo singing “Unbreak my heart”. Is it italian or portugese they sing in?

Lastly, the ultimate ice breaker for the moment when you know it’s going down, but don’t really know how to say so….”Do Ya Think I’m Sexy!!!”

WD - you’re right. We do know what’s going down before we even leave our house!

Island Girl Sometimes I’ll dance around my apartment with something skimpy on listening to Darling Nikki. LOL That would make for some interesting YouTube.

One day we were riding in his car I started flipping thru the stations and a song came on the radio by Stevie Wonder called “If you really love me won’t you tell me”…. He sang that song to me and to this day everytime I hear that song I smile and I get butterflies. That was so so sweet.

Que when I was at Ft Stewart we chowed down at Savannah State too. There was a dorm (I cant remember the name,as you came onto the circle goig right, help me out, its been a minute) where the ladies had to walk across the circle to the chow hall. I would park the ride out there and scoop them one after the other. Plenty to go around. They loved soldiers. That was good living.

Bubba you can hang around man. There are a few married folks in here I think. Plus your name makes me laugh. Good folks are good folks.
