Let the games begin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know many of you out there are big sports fans. (And may I take this opportunity for a shameless mention of the No. 1 men’s basketball team in the country, my very own Tar Heels?)
Well, what happens when the competitive games enter into your relationship setting?
I had a longstanding rivalry with one of my exes over… well, just about everything. I’d score points for having a better undergraduate GPA than he did. He’d come back and remind me that he’d done better on his SATs. I’d sweetly point out his bad grammar, and he wouldn’t let me off the hook easily when I was unable to accurately calculate a 15 percent tip. And forget it when our schools played in basketball; the trash-talking was legion. It was all in good fun, really, and allowed us to keep a nice parity. The only problem, for me, was that I never could beat him in Scrabble.
It seems to me that most people like to feel a competitive edge over their partners in at least some arena. Hey, a little friendly rivalry keeps the relationship fresh, right?
But when it becomes a problem is when someone becomes a “sore loser.” My high school boyfriend always needed to prove to me that he was smarter than me and, to that end, never could stop reminding me that he went to a “better” university than I did (a debatable point if you ask me, but I digress.) At that point, the competition stopped being fun and turned into mean-spirited.
Do you have any competitions with your significant other? What are they? How do you think they matter to your relationship?
Do you ever feel like your partner’s competitive nature is a problem?
Can anyone ever “win” in a relationship competition?

Good Morning bloggers well…hhhmm this can be good because it does keep things going at a pcae where no one gets bored but on the other it can possible lead to someone feeling they don’t measure up or they just get tired of always competing…this topic is sure to bring some good responces…

Happy Friday All!!!! And thank God for three day weekends….now on topic..
Competition is cool, as long as it does not get out of hand. Too much of that will definitely get on my nerves.

My ex and I used to spar over our colleges. He felt as though because his GPA was higher than mine that meant he was smarter. I had to explain to him that although we both went to HBCUs, mine was of a different caliber than his was. I actually took a class at his college one summer to lighten my load and felt as though I was in high school again. So IMO my 3.3 at my college was more impressive than his 3.7 at his.
Of course he didn’t think so and we always went back and forth. I always thought it was a nonissue but he always wanted to bring it up and I’m never one to back down from a good debate. He just always went too far with his, which is one reason he’s an ex.

good morning GAman :)
i don’t like competition in relationships. i don’t think it’s healthy or necessary. i have enough going on in the workplace that the last thing i need is to go home to someone who is competing with me professionally or academically. outside of a friendly game of scrabble (lol), no competition!

Unless the competition is Twister, I don’t see much fun with constant rivalry. It has it’s place, but when competition comes up in almost everything (i.e. alma mater, job salry, I.Q., birthplace, etc.) it can get real tiring. It can get real irritating when you have a S.O., friend, or even co-worker that always tries to “one-up” you. What’s the point?

Good morning!!
What’s up GAman, Kinderbabe and Sexione?
I try to keep the competition out of my relationships…except for tunk and spades….lol
I had to compete with my sister in everything growing up…so needless to say I hate it. She made better grades than me…she swam better than me…she did karate better than me…she played the piano better than…get the picture. But, I did find a couple of things that I could do better than her….dance (ballet, tap and jazz that is), cheer and play basketball.

This topic is right in sync with Momania’s. In my opinion competition is great as long as you know where to draw the line and as long it is not done with a hateful spirit. Been there done that and went too far a time or two. We both are know-it-alls so there will always be some form of competition. I feel that we have matured and learned how to not be so harsh. There were those days that we were going for blood to prove who knew what over the other. Shamelessly childish for both of us I would say.

HOWDY BLOG GUYS-N-GALS
I’m not one that enjoys the whole competitive deal in my relationships. It actually irritates me when every time I turn around I feel like I have to defend something or constantly try to out do my SO. The only kinds of competitiveness that I would welcome & enjoy would be a fun, silly, lovers wrestling match, a gentle game of Tekken or Mario Kart, bowling, and my all time favorite miniature golf.
By Foots
January 12, 2007 09:29 AM | Link to this
I’m with kinderbabe. I want me and my SO’s relationship to be a refuge for each other, not a battleground. The outside world is tough enough.
kinderbabe A glass of wine helps. I’ve tried deep, slow breathing techniques during an insomnia spell. That works. But a bullet will definitely knock your azz out!! Shoot, sometimes I’ve fallen asleep before I had the chance to turn it off!! LOL!!
Happy Friday Everyone!!

I don’t like competing with my SO in life accomplishments. Now, I do enjoy a good debate or even discussing our views on society…that kind of stuff….But bragging about who went to the better school is pointless…I hate it when you’re dating a Woman and they want to parade their accomplishments around, so why would I want my SO doing it?!?

I think a little competition is natural between people, but it shouldn’t be a major part of your relationship. I don’t want to have to keep score all the time, and feel (or make him feel) inadequate over something trivial.

I’ve never been one to brag, but when someone tries to down me or my school because of perception, then I have a problem. I’m proud of my school and education but it doesn’t define me. My ex was the type to try to down my school so I guess in my defense of it, I would debate him in a worthless attempt to make him see what I saw.
I think he just took pride in the fact that he had a higher GPA than me so in his mind I could never be better than him. We were both right out of college then so blame it on the youth factor.

I am fine with a little competitive trash talk ( i.e. my school is better than yours, my team is better, my dad could beat your day back in the early 70’s) but not to the point of where I am always made to feel like another person is trying to “one up” me.
I once dated a woman who did the “one up” thing If I told her I was tired, she would tell me how her day was harder and she just could take another step. If I told her I missed lunch due to a mid-day meeting she would tell me that the only thing that she has had all day was a grape, and the skin was taken off of that. It got to the point where it was not intelligent talk, it became irritating.
And any way has the blog not heard that “it is better to Hug not Hit, Kiss not Kick, and F* Not Fuss.”

i’m not sure foots but what i meant was if she is the hostess of the event (bachelorette party), lol. i guess i should have said was she the maid/matron of honor b/c throwing the bachelorette party would be a responsibility of that person. as far as i know, an actual hostess at a wedding just makes sure everyone is comfortable and seated properly (according to the seating arrangement) at the wedding ceremony. basically, someone who wasn’t able to be a bridesmaid or groomsmen. j/k lol

Kinder is correct the hostess duties include: manning the guest book; taking any gifts given at the wedding and making sure they arrive safely at the reception, taking gifts at the reception site, making sure everyone is seated correctly (both the wedding and the reception), passing out wedding programs and assisting the wedding director/ coordinator with misc. duties.

All of the ladies in the class have pretty stressful lives, as do I, but it is the one place where we can relax and really feel like women again. I do the 8-week programs they offer and I’m in Level 2 now.

Sexione Girl, it’s my fault! But y’all already know I’m crazy!
how does your SO feel about the bullet taking his place?
Was this one meant for me? If not, I’ll answer it anyway…and I’ll even mention the topic! Because it’s not a competition between him and an inanimate object (well, if the batteries die, it’s inanimate), he sees that it can be a complement to what we experience together.
And he knows that it’s crazy to think that something like that can take his place, because he knows that he is more to me than just a means to THAT end. He is my friend, my confidant, the one that calls me to check on me during a rough day. Nothing beats that at all. (sigh)
So forget eyes, mouth and hands… That bullet would have to be able to take out the trash, wash the dishes, take the dog for a walk, fix the hole in the back fence and change the blown out tail light in my car in order to take my baby’s place!! LOL!!

That’s why I take a lot of dance classes. I’m down to two days a week of classes, but the pain from Tap and Hip-Hop hold me over for about three days anyway!

sexione that is convenient. you’re making me want to push my date up to february now.
foots that’s good that you’re doing dance. they offer dance at the gym where i work out. it’s too late for me though. i think they have hip-hop at 8 and exotic dance at 9. i like to be out of there no later than 7:30 or so. gotta get up early. you’re so right about when you’re approaching 30. i’m 31 and have seen some changes in my metabolism and have had to increase my exercise to keep everything right lol.
GAman don’t call the cops on us now! lol

Sexione Normally, regular workout clothes, and you can do barefoot or with heels or high boots. But they have special theme days where they give you suggestions on what to wear to maximize your sexy.

sexione who has comedy on thursdays?? alsok, for class something comfortable to move in, non-restricting stretch cotton pants and a nice stretchy t-shirt. you know, work out type clothes. stilettos are optional, especially the first few classes.
slimone you know how they’re redeveloping downtown. they’re probably building something there. i think the next closest one would be on northside drive not far from georgia tech. do you know where that is?

I must admit, my curiosity is peaked regarding the classes you all are talking about. I’ve always wanted to try it especially since I used to take dance years ago. *(ballet, tap, jazz, modern, african, hip hop)

What u Blog:
I see today’s conversation is charged up (pun intended). I’m hiding under my desk with all theses bullets flying around…lol. For the dance enthusiasts, stilettos should be mandatory, Any coach will tell you, “you perform the way you practice” so give your all. Hey Sexione, justMe, Foots, Kinder, Mocha, all the ladies. What up fellas.

Slim With the rhythm you already have and the prior dance experience, you’d be great at it. There is a huge focus on fitness, so we do plenty of core/abs/legs work. You’d love it.
Mocha No gym membership, I take my main dance classes (tap and hip-hop) at a dance studio in Cobb County that teaches toddlers through adults. You know, with a yearly recital and all that good stuff.

Well, I used to get beaten at Scrabble by nerds who memorized lists of short odd words. I was not willing to do that kind of homework.
So, I changed the game such that those words are largely useless.

Result: I play top Scrabble players and win by big margines.

Foots I’ve been feeling the urge to workout for the sake of toning up only. I’m NOT trying to lose weight because if I did, i’d disappear. LOL I want to tone up my biceps/triceps, stomach/abs area and last but not least the buttocks/thigh area. So will I get noticeable results from this type of workout?

Hey Bloggers and Happy Friday Hope everyone is doing well. Foots & Kinder I heard those classes are great for a workout, outside of brushing up on some skills. May have to try that one myself. MochaTreat you got a website or something. I have a friend that has the worst taste ever and is about to get married! We are all scared at what she might come up with, and trying to find her some help!! On topic dont really like the competition thing unless you have good sportsmanship, period, otherwise it aint fun!!

Foots, slim, sexi
You can actually involve your man in the bullet party. A friend of mine that had one that had a sleeve that the bullet went in, and a large doughnut shaped thing at the top that went over the soldier. Now the key is to put it on when the soldier is resting and to take it off when the soldier is resting, also make sure you get the right size, Because even though it is rubber it is thick so it hurts the man. But if you do everything right it will slide down the soldier, and sit at the base and you will be able to get both sensations at once.
True story with that one.

hey mo yeah, you gotta try it.:)
slimone they changed ownership over a year or so ago. same set up though. they have added spin classes which i love! that’s my latest obsession. also, they’re building a sports bar/gameroom type place next door where the family dollar used to be. that’s gonna be a mess! folk drinking before they come in the gym…lol.
By Foots
January 12, 2007 01:22 PM | Link to this
Slim and Mo Yeah, it tones up a lot. We were working on sideways spins this week and I swear, I had the most soreness I have ever had from a workout. My whole core, from shoulders to waist, was tore up! Glad I make my living in other ways, cause I wouldn’t last two days.
Plus, I noticed from just a few weeks of class that the little jiggle under my upper arms was gone. I’ve gone from a size 4 to a 6 in the last few years and that’s fine for me so I don’t want to lose much weight now, just maintain what I currently have and take 2 inches off the waist.
Tap is perfect for legs. I could kick a cow to sleep!

The drunk Men will be chasing tail and the drunk Women will be talking about how much they love er’body….Somebody like demi will put too much weight on something and choke himself…There will be all kinds of lawsuits.
Dude: I’m suing…What are my rights?
Lawyer: Well what happened to you sir?

True story with that one. Her neighbors knocked on the door about 30 seconds after I left, with a bottle of water and some Chloroseptic spray to ask her if she was o.k. They said the water was because she must have been working out, and the spray was because they knew her throat was hurting from all the screaming.
Slim & Mo It is all real there is nothing imaginary about it. When I go to my grandmothers church and see ole girl, she just busts out laughing.
Sexi My bad, but you and ole boy will never look at each other the same.
Foots Now I have just had a picture jump in my head. But you can have the real thing with out having to find the lost treasure that was buried to deep. That’s all I’m saying, and now I will let my imagination run wild.
