Flipping the switch

So tonight on the FX network is the premiere of a new show. Perhaps y’all have heard something about it — it’s called “Black.White” and the premise is simple: Two families, one white, one black, are given elaborate makeup jobs and asked to live in the other group’s situation for a certain amount of time.

The show has gotten its fair share of controversy and pre-release publicity, and many people are wondering how sensitively it will handle many of the issues innate in dealing with race in such a manner. But to me, the most interesting aspect of the show is what the participants will find to be the little things they didn’t expect to be different in everyday life, the places where their perspective is different and they didn’t even think about it.

I think dating could be one of those areas. Most of us are so concerned with the struggles we face in trying to find the One that we rarely consider how different aspects of society that don’t affect us personally might change the equation.

So here’s a fun fantasy question for y’all today: If you could switch places with one person or type of person to experience dating from their perspective, who would it be? Would you try to get inside the head of a member of the opposite gender? See what it’s like to date as a member of a different race, religion or culture? Try out the dating scene in a different city — New York, San Francisco, Miami, Paris, Tokyo? Is there a particular celebrity you’d love to switch places with for a certain reason?

What do you think you might learn from this experiment? What would you want to experience?

This is an interesting topic.

Switching roles with the opposite sex for dating purposes? Sure I can’t pick the same sex and just say Angelina Jolie? How about Oprah Winfrey? Okay, okay… if I had to choose a man, I guess I would say Mos Def…the guy that is now in 16 blocks…. Plays on Def Poetry Jam. I think he is phenomenal as a person. A forward thinker, motivated, and spends his money and energy helping others, he has truly grasp the concept of life -making a difference in the world. Oh, I think this man is all that… a bag of Doritos’s, Tostitos and French onion rings! That man is so fine… okay, okay, well I digress. I would jump in his thoughts just to see what it is like to be that smooth. I love a man with a brain! I would find out what HE looking for in a woman!! My first date would be myself. After all, if we are fantasizing, I can use all of this information for my own personal gain. And take him home with me … to cook, read poetry, and become political activist together.

i wouldn’t mind trading places with a new york power-socialite-hieress type of broad…i would say a la lizzie grubman, but er, she’s a rough looking chick. so um, if carrie bradshaw were a real chick maybe?

what would i like to learn? whether dating power-broker types of men is any kind of fun. oh, and i’d dig the part about having enough spare dough to buy some manolos or jimmy choos… and having an ‘in’ to all the hot clubs

I think the show will be interesting to say the least. Hopefully they won’t stage anything like most reality TV shows do. Looking at the commercials the makeup artist did a somewhat decent job and didn’t have them looking like the Wayan’s Brothers on that movie White Chicks.

Far as trading places with some celebrity I wouldn’t mind trading places with whoever is dating Sanaa Lathan.

Greetings and peace to all this morning….

@BTIA…..I’m starting to think you really are flirting.

Same sex different color…I would pick Eva Longoria, just to see what it feels like to have every man falling at your feet and a body to die for.

Different sex, same color….that would be Jamie Foxx…his life is going pretty good right about now.

Different sex, different color…Paul Walker…that’s all one has to say.

If I could trade lives with any other woman it would have been Ella Fitzgerald. I know she had many struggles throughtout her life but she seemed to always come out on top with grace and poise. Plus she had the most beautiful smile, voice, amd always kept her girlish charm. I’d also like to be a man…. more specifically a linebacker for any NFL team. Funny VAN fact…. when I was born the doctor thought I was a boy until I came all the way out, I guess my shoulders were a bit broad.

Bre: naah… I’m not envious of athletes in that way. I played ball in college and had my fair share of fun with the ladies during that time. I am envious of athletes because they have a career that they truly are passionate about; but I don’t envy them having hundreds of chicks after them solely because of their fame and money. Not my cup of tea… I’d rather be the good looking, incognegro, regular brotha on the dating scene. Good times… good times…

By Bre

March 8, 2006 10:54 AM | Link to this

Thank you DB and DK; for stating your side and your opinions are respected. I was just thinking the whole topic was out of fun. I listed Eva L, Paul W, and Jamie F they are who they are. But I would never not want to be who I am. I’m very comfortable in my own skin and granted life has not/is not/will not always be easy for a sista I would not give it up for anything in life. I love the aura of intrigue that surrounds me, the ability to be who I am without compromise or under a telescope of the public. I fly under the radar but high enough to be looked up to. Trust.

Sometimes things are just out of “what ifs” not “for sures”. Its cool to see no matter what you both stand by who are and what you are no matter how light hearted the topic is.

Thanks again.

The fascination with MLK is what he taught the world. His struggle was instrumental in setting precedences for equality and justice for all. The acomplishments that today allow us to have so many freedoms. He designed a blue print to be used for the world to strive for better as we evolve as people and a nation. ‘Just look at him’?? hunh?? what does that have to do with anything?…IMHO. What I am really interested in find out is what a man thinks on the first or second date and why they can’t seem to keep their eyes straight. I have been on dates with guys who were fairly keen on me, but who couldn’t keep their eyes off the eye candy for more than 2 seconds.

I would love to walk in Oprah Winfrey’s shoes for just a day….to feel what it’s like to want to start out as a journalist/anchor (as my dream once was) and turn out to become an anchor, talk show host, philanthropist, role model, mentor and just a great woman…..to start from humble beginnings….and end up impacting thousands of lives….

Catherine Zeta Jones….to have killer curves in my late thirties and marry one of the most prestigious men in Hollywood and even have two babies just to put the icing on the cake…..who says women can’t have children after the biological clock starts ticking??!!

Wouldn’t mind dating as a high powered woman in a prestigious law firm in New York City….just to see if the stereotypes are true…men can’t handle highly successful women…..or maybe they can, but the woman inevitably ends up with a man that makes less than she….:)

Wouldn’t mind dating a Buddhist…just to learn spiritual discipline….deprivation from the material brings you closer to the spiritual….I’ve always admired eastern spirituality:)

Wouldn’t mind switching places with a heartless man of any race to see what they get out of breaking hearts and dating every Jane, Mary, and Sue…lol

I would love to date/be a woman from India, or any country/culture that your parents select your husband for you, takes all the guesswork out!

I like this topic Laney, I think it would be kinda tough to be a caucasian woman on the dating scene. I would probably develop a eating disorder trying to keep up with the Kate Moss look. I think black women are way more forgiven for their curves and voluptuousness, and some of us simply don’t buy into the thin = beautiful mentality. I feel for my sisters who are struggling with that body image issue.

I think some are missing the entire point of this blog entry….

It’s about walking in someone else’s shoes to help break down the barriers between one person from the next….

That’s what the show is about….experiencing life differently than what you are accustomed to….. then maybe we won’t be so quick to judge others and get a broader view of other cultures, religions, races, professions, etc….

Black male: Morris Chestnut. Women love him and the fellas think he is cool. Great career.

Black female: Nia Long. I wouldn’t even need a mate!!

White male: Brad Pitt so I could have Angelina Jolie any time I want!

White female: Paris Hilton. Being dumb and rich for not having to do a thing but party all the time? Oh yeah, that would be the life

Latin Male: Antonio Banderas. He is just cool and suave like the Latin lovers we grew up with .

Latin Female: J.Lo same as Nia!

@RoyalChic - the problem with most people is that they don’t really want to know what its like from another’s viewpoint. They only want to play like they know. Your momma told you something and you believed her…or your aunt, cousin, whatever…THE MEDIA even. Get to know people that are different. Spend time with them, become family as we are all suppose to be ANYWAY! Then, you will have a better understanding of what they go through, what their life is like, why they think like they do. You may never truly know because every person’s reality is their own perception of it! You will never know what it is like to be me, not totally and i will never know what it is like to be you. But I want to know that I have truly tried to the best of my ability to see something thru someone’s perspective instead of just my own. And NOT just what someone TOLD me to believe.

Mark, my views on MLK have nothing to do with his “message.” My views pertain to Him, as a man….gotta be able to separate the two - bout like T Jefferson, although he was a brilliant statesman, he was a slave owner - to me, MLK was a hypocrite! He preached one thing, yet did another…his non-violent doctrine was “effective,” because it was harmless and was an easy rallying point for us at the time - he was a known adulterer, and it’s been proven that he plagiarized his doctoral thesis; He was then, what Jessie is now…an opportunist. It’s well documented that he wouldn’t take on certain causes if he either didn’t get paid, or he didn’t get the press….and my biggest reason, is because he’s forced down our throats!!! Every city in america has an MLK boulevard; and as Chris Rock said, look at the dynamics of every MLK street! Why aren’t there any MLK avenues in the Buckheads of america if he was so great?

I think the whole tribute to MLK is due to the dream that he had for Black Americans and America as a whole during a time where segregation was eating away at the spirit of America….

We all have dreams that we may or may not live up to, but we can never fault someone for dreaming big and going beyond the call of duty to make his dream a reality for future generations……he sacrificed his family for the sake of the movement which speaks for itself…..

It’s the DREAM we should admire and not FOCUS on the faults of the man himself….after all, we all have faults, but how many of us are willing to put our life on the line for a cause bigger than ourselves? Not many…..and as far as MLK street ways in the inner city….he was born and raised in the inner city of Atlanta…his legacy was fighting for civil equality for the common folk that are found in your inner city neighborhoods…..it’s appropriate in my opinion…..

As far as plagarism….I believe we’ve all plagarized at some point or another, but I digress due to the fact that we will never know the truth behind that….

I am sure my mom would pick the wrong man for me

Paul I don’t always understand the way black/white people talk either. Maybe I should just call it slang. I think every culture has it’s way of communicating with each other.

2 Man I understand what you are saying, but no one is perfect and I agree with Royal chic on his vision. I’d agree that MLK would be a hypocrite if he spoke on non-violence and went home to beat Coretta every night. Some people make MLK out to be holier than thou, but I don’t think that’s the point that is trying to be made in keeping his memory alive. As far back as I can remember MLK was a man I was told I should look up to look up to. I know MLK stood on the back of someone else who didn’t get any shine or praise, but that’s the way of the world. Somebody is always standing on someone elses back. I do, however, have a problem with these so called representatives for black folk. As soon as Al Sharpton or some other black person the can garner enough media attention stands up and says something it’s like they are speaking for all of black america. They don’t speak for me and I did not make them my leader. I try use my life as an example of the way I want to live and although my voice is not heard throughout the world it’s still heard. I respect your opinion and I know you will continue to have your voice heard as well.

@2can - I ain’t mad atcha - I don’t buy a lot of the reports that came out after he died I think a lot were for the discredit of his service - there was a lot of back-biting going on during the movement and trust me the non-violent way wasn’t a popular one - people were mad and wanted to fight back it takes a whole heck of a lot to stand there and take it - I know I couldn’t have done that - but I digress the Dream was to encompass all people yet do we really need an MLK in the Buckheads of America and are the MLK’s that are in the hood a reflection of the man or a reflection of the people of the area and that there are many who are stil enslaved to a mentality of ghetto plantationalism which is nothing more than a distinct sign that the Dream is yet to be realized - because for unity to extend outside of the people unity must first be present within the people - the question is did MLK fail in his attempt to dream or did we fail in our attempt not to? All that being said I ain’t mad at the man, I don’t need for him to be perfect, I expect him to have some dirt, who doesn’t but that doesn’t mean we can’t contribute to helping someone look past the faults that we committed and choose a better path - I leave it at that

No movie hero here. I would like to just get into the head of the lady I have been dating after this weekend (great weekend in every way, then the “sound of silence”). Am I in or out (or am I just being jerked around AGAIN)…help me ladies, would being in your heads for a night help me figure you out??? I’d do the lady thing in a heartbeat if I could learn from it

that’s my point, Married….as I said, you gotta be able to distinguish between the message and the man!!!! His message/dream/vision is beautiful; But his hu-“man” frailties are what sets him apart. and for the record, I worship NO MAN!!!!! Because I know we all bleed red blood and are subject to the same temptations and wiles - I can understand a lapse in judgement e’ry now and then, but consistently, and you’re a man in the public eye, and a preacher of the gospel, too?????

Good question 2- I don’t focus on the faults of Billy C’s administration….there were faults, but I felt his administration made major accomplishments so it’s all in how you perceive the situation….his personal relationship with his wife and Monica Lewinsky is really none of my business:)

Just to recap, his dream’s primary focus was for people who were fighting so hard to gain equality and those people happened to be represented in the inner cities not in the Buckhead’s of America, but I agree with you I feel the dream should cause everyone to take a second look at racism in our country…..

@Royal - my thang is it is easy to poke holes in the man and the approach and it isn’t just MLK that we can do this to - anyone who decides to make a stance for a certain cause doesn’t mean that there whole existance is going to point toward the cause but should that make the cause invalid and at the same time does that mean that the person shouldn’t be admired for any reason? I personally am not in awe of people but yet I do have to take my hat off to those who are willing to walk the line of “true” persecution for the betterment of their people. Not that I’m going to agree with every movement and trust I follow only one “true” message but I’m open to engage in any healthy conversation - but I’m sure MLK understood this going in, I mean who in history has truly been spared this ridicule?

Afternoon People.

Thanks for the prayers. It was sad to lose my cousin last week. I learned that he didn’t suffer and died in his sleep. I got to see some cousins I haven’t seen in over 10 years.

About MLK, I believe he was a ray of hope for many Black people, even though he may have been a bit of a hypocrite.

But like 2, I admire those who persevered and did great things despite the seemingly insurmountable odds against them like Harriet Tubman and Sojourner Truth. But also the thousands of the nameless and faceless people who had to endure being sold away from their children, those who fought and lost their lives for a country who treated them as less than human, and those who had to live through the Jim Crow era and told they could not do something because they were not the “right” color.

@ MARK I don’t think were any less qualified than they are. The only difference is they devoted their lives to that. You and I just chosen to do things differently, for you more personal with family and loved ones. My grandmother and mother were empathetic in the same way but locally in their neighborhoods. Bra if you wanted to carry the torch, you sound educated enough to convey your message and motivate others but it sounds like that’s not the life you aspire to lead. I just respect and idolize men and women not only for having the BALLS to do it on a mass scale, but also for having the compassion to turn the other cheek. One of my favorite lines is “forgive them father for they know not what they do”, fiction or not I aspire to have such compassion.

Even though I almost never watch TV, I think I’ll take a look at this show tonight. Unless I decide to have a glass of wine and a game of chess with my girl instead.

I have some trepidation about this show, similar to what I felt about Ken Burn’s documentary on Jazz. I figured, people know almost or literally nothing about Jazz; whatever Jazz is represented as in that documentary will be forever embedded in people’s minds as what Jazz is. I watched parts of a couple episodes, and sure enough, it was an awful lot of narrative BS (read: incorrect) and hardly any of the music itself. ‘Trane starts playing and 5 seconds later dude is talking, reciting many inaccuracies. Same with Bird, same with Louis, same for Dixieland as a whole. Bummer.

This Black.White show could be the similar in that regard. This is obviously something that noone knows anything about, and whatever impressions they get from this show will be carried around with them for quite some time. Such sensationalism is what so-called reality TV is all about, and as such, one can almost expect it to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Will it enlighten or inflame? Watch and learn, I guess.

You are right ABC I was having that thought the other day, not necessarily about this particular show, but just about information/knowledge and how it is passed or given. If I don’t know anything about a particular subject it might be hard to discern what is accurate/correct and what is not. I try to present myself will all perspectives and form an opinion based on that. On the Jazz tip. I love jazz, but my knowledge is subpar at best.

@Jazzy - you mean he sees another woman when he looks at me? Or he sees more of me than he can see sober?

On Jazz (the music that is) How can it be described or put into a documentary unless you are only talking about the people who made it the art that it is? Jazz by its own definition is expressionistic art done to music, it changes, ebbs and flows like the sea. It can be a contradiction and not at the same time. IT IS AMAZING. Coltrane, Davis, Monk, ICONS!

@ rayne…I think he really loved someone that he is no longer with. Now he measures you to her. You quite possibly could have all those qualities etc, but he is gun shy and not willing to divulge that he is falling in love with you. When he’s drinking all of that comes to the for front of his brain and it comes out that he loves you. When hes not drinking he feels it but isn’t ready to tell you as of yet….or it’s just plain game girl.

Actually, I think that ‘What Is Jazz’ can be a never ending debate. What about any particular music makes it Jazz? Plenty of music gets marketed as Jazz, but it’s not — Kenny G is the very first that comes to mind, the list is long though.

For instance, one aspect of Jazz is that it’s primarily improvisational. Any arranged parts (or the ‘head’) are, for the most part, only to provide a framework for improvisation. It’s been described (accurately, I think) as merely an excuse to improvise.

Jazz is based on that which has come before it, influenced by Jazz as a whole. Jazz History is crucial to determining what Jazz is. By contrast, Kenny G is based on pop music from the past 30 years or so. He doesn’t really improvise, either; rather, he plays the same 5 licks in different order over and over.

It could get to be quite an intellectual debate, but I think that an accurate documentary about it is more than possible. Certainly, it’d require that the music itself be heard as something more than background music for narrative. It’s not baseball or the civil war, so as good as Ken Burns is at that sort of thing, perhaps his approach isn’t very well suited for a documentary about Jazz.

NYC like ATL has its up and downs of black and white issues. But I do enjoy how diverse it is, you can go from Russia to Africa…its truely amazing in that sense. However I miss the old ATL the one where you could go to YinYang get your groove on to some fusion hip hop then go to IHOP share a table with total strangers and walk away with a friend for life.

Like your’s when he is drinking he thinks there is something there, and when sober, nothing. however this is who I am suppose to marry next year if neither one of us gets a better offer.(of course this was decided when surprise he was drinking!) god love him, but I have to find someone else.

@ Jazzy the major difference when it comes to B/W Atl to NYC(city area) is that here we are forced to deal with each other. We have to mix and etc. In Atl if you choice not to associate you don’t have to all. You can live in an area and never have to deal with a person of opposite color.

The creators of this nonsense told the white family to use very specific racist comments in order to create more “interest”. Blacks are the ones segregating, let them keep it up if they want. White families in America do not sit around and talk about it, blaks are obsessed with segregating. If that’s what they want, let them do it. This “show” is just that, a show, and it was scripted to make it look like white people are racist. Come on nut jobs, rise above and live, quit wallowing around in the gutter of the racisim industry…and it is just that, an industry because it preys on ignorance and people looking for excuses. People (like the creators of this show) make money on the racism industry, it is NOT our country, only a few people. If you throw roadkill out, the maggots and buzzards will flock, the eagles will keep flying because they will not waste their time on garbage. Are you a maggot or an eagle?

@ Rayne - I don’t know your situation but it seems like your friend is suppressing his feelings for you. No matter how drunk I get I’m not telling you I love you if i don’t, point blank. In my opinion Alcohol brings out your true colors in people, so when people try to use the drunken excuse i just laugh at the BS. When you’re drunk you say what you mean, it’s when your sober you alter/disguise the meaning of your words. He might not say he loves you when he’s sober because he feels it leaves him feeling vulnerable, maybe he’s still struggling at the fact that you have his heart. But when he’s lit he wants to shout it from the roof tops.
