The Truth About Mia

Here are the pictures of me that I promised to post. You will notice my smile is the exact same in every picture.

My first name is Tiffany. My middle name is Mia. But most of my friends call me Minnie.

I moved to Atlanta two years ago to start my life over. Hard to believe at 23 I needed to start my life over when for most people life is just beginning at that age anyway. But I came to Atlanta and this city has been a blessing to me.

One day while discussing how to enhance the relationships section of the website my manager, the relationship reporter and myself sat around talking about how to reach a demographic that our print stories on dating and relationship was not reaching. I had many stories…funny stories…of my trials and tribulations in dating that I wanted to share. Thus the Misadventures in Atlanta (Mia) was born.

Those that have been with me from the beginning know the most about me but for any who don’t know or aren’t sure here’s a quick rundown.

  • Born and raised in New Jersey…most of my family is still there…the youngest of 4…my Father died when I was 6.
  • Attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and I’m a die hard Tarheel fan down to my Carolina blue colored car.
  • Moved to Philadelphia after college to work at the Philadelphia Inquirer. But I was an Eagles fan before moving to Philly.
  • Came to Atlanta and the AJC in Sept 2003.
  • I started as a features producer for ajc.com and accessatlanta.com. In August I became the night online sports editor.
  • Made a ton of virtual and real friends, bought my first home, but never truly found a companion here.
  • December 2005 leaving for NYC and the New York Times

I’m not very good at goodbyes. I hate to go and I hate to see people leave. I’m a FILA…forever I love Atlanta that’s what makes it even harder for me to move on. I promise to stop by every now and then or send Wise Diva an update to post on the blog. You can reach me at misadventures@gmail.com. You can also check me out every Thursday and Friday at 4:45 p.m. on the Two Live Stews. The Stews are friends of mine and I will be filling in as the entertainment reporter while I’m still in the area.

I want to thank EVERYONE for all the love, support, criticism, etc. y’all have given me. I will miss this community in ways that can’t be described in words. Every blogger and lurker has been a blessing to me. I hope I have touched your lives as deeply as you each have touched mine.

So this is your chance. Now that you know who I am to ask any questions you have been dying to ask. I will not reveal who particularly people were. Honestly it should no longer even matter. My one question for y’all…do I look like the person you imagined Mia to be?

Congrats Mia on your new job! Every now and then a topic comes along that brings out all of the lurkers and this one warrants that. I was meaning to comment on yesterday but I was so busy. As one of the original bloggers, I want to say thanks for this blog and of the inspiration and education your topics have given me. It’s been a fun ride and I’m going to miss ya. We have met at some functions and I think you know who I am. You are blessed and highly favored!

Good morning folks…

Well after meeting you yesterday it seems hard to believe some of the drama that I’ve read about you over the last year on this blog. You’re very attractive and seem to have a very nice, outgoing personality, why you and some of the women on here and in Atlanta have such a hard time finding a mate is beyond me. I mean, it’s either the ratio of men to women, or some men may seem intimidated by successful black women.

I hope nothing but the best for you in NYC, and I don’t think you’ll have a problem up there. You seem like the NYC/soho type of woman anyways. So you’ll probably fit right on in. Good luck and thanks for this venue over the last year. It’s been insightful at times, as well as entertaining, and I’ve met some good people on here.

Questions for Tiffany Mia?

1) Um…have you run into that same shirt different club guy again lately?

2) What’s the update with Mr. P … last I recall he was trynna get at one of your gals … y’all had a spat and then what?

3) Have you learned to cook different things now that you own the kitchen? (and have the costs of maintaining a household)

Tell me, Mia-damus …

4) Will the Tar Heels make it to the NCAA tourney this season?

5) How long will it be before we see the end of R. Kelly’s Trapped in the Closets?

hahahahahaha

For the record, you look exactly like you described ..but the pictures don’t do you justice. You are one tiny chick, are you sure your people don’t call you MINI?

It’s hard to believe that you will be leaving. Congrats on the New Job. Your adventures will be missed. Now the two questions I have are : Do you have any regrets?…I mean of coming to Atlanta but mostly of choosing to open snippets of your life to not only Atlanta but the world through Misadventures in Atlanta. Do you think NYC will be a better dating scene for you?

Again Best Wishes you will be missed!!!

morning! I didn’t think it was gonna be this quick. I thought yesterday was a day of notice and then 2 weeks and then gone. I guess not. Mia I never really ‘pictured’ you because you wanted to remain vague. I just pictured a nice person, a little too trusting in some areas, who was doing her thing. Liked to be more natural then all girly, but most of all a young woman with her act together.
You’ve made us proud!!!

GOOD NEW FAM!!!! THEY FOUND MY NIECE!!!! I have been crying my eyes out. Mostly because they found her and mostly because they found her on the back porch of the apartment I just moved from. I am still not sure why she went there versus calling me, but I am so glad she hasn’t been hurt. Thank you so much for your prayers and well wishes.

Oh Wow Mia…. You sure know how to spring things on people. lol I didn’t think it would be this quick either.

I started reading this blog around April or May 2004. I can’t believe it has lasted this long. I read it everyday. I haven’t posted in about a year. Good Bye Mia, we will miss you. I moved too since the blog started. I moved back home to Florida last January but I miss the A. I still read the AJC everyday and listen to Atl radio stations on the internet. I am surprised about the pictures. I had pictured the complexion correctly but you look more mature than I thought you would. I don’t know why the guys always think of you as the “kid sister”. Maybe because of your height.

JRock it was great meeting you yesterday. And you can still check me out on the Stews. Thanks for giving me a hard time…it’s always good to have your ideas and perspective challenged.

Answers to questions:

  • 1st shoulder is my friend Ivy…we were at Compound.

  • 2nd shoulder is my friend Cami…we were at The Mark

  • Ivy and Cami have just started a new business that y’all should check out.Diva Dating

  • haven’t run in to the same shirt guy which is a good thing. Maybe he is paying more attention to his wife.

  • Me and Mr. Potential haven’t spoken since he tried to get at my girl. I think I tried calling him once for his birthday but I think he had my number blocked or saw my number and it went straight to voicemail.

  • My kitchen is barely used. The most used thing in my kitchen is the microwave. I still have plastic on some of the shelves in my refrigerator so literally my appliances are still just like new.

  • Of course my Tarheels will make it to the tourney this year but I can’t see us getting another championship. We are always a talented crew so don’t sleep on us.

  • Hopefully this is the end of “closets” for R. Kelly. He hasn’t been getting a lot of good press lately. Will he ever go to trial is the real question of which I have no answer but I guess to say eventually or otherwise all the charges need to be dropped.

  • Nickname is definetely minnie as in minnie mouse yet I don’t own a single thing with minnie mouse on it.

By Mia

December 13, 2005 09:52 AM | Link to this

  • Only regret I have…never meeting Usher.

  • Will dating in NYC be better or worse? I can only hope it will be better but I’m from up north and it can be a cold place, figuratively and literally…but I’m going to remain optimistic and hopeful.

By Mia

  • Not naked…lol…just did a very close crop on the photo. Top has spaghetti straps that didn’t make the crop. Didn’t necessarily want to out my friends when I outed myself.

  • y’all be sure to email me and if any of y’all are interested I do have a personal blog, as most of y’all do and it’s much more candid than MIA ever was and ever will be. Just not as restrictive when you are doing it for yourself as opposed to doing it on the daily as part of your j-o-b.

By Mia

Ivy - the archives only go back so far…remember the blog got blanked out about this time last year. BUT I have no regrets about anything I have said about any of the guys I have dealt with and they shouldn’t have any either if they feel they treated me accordingly.

Awwww…. I am getting misty eyed…. the blog isn’t over… just different.

Mia You looked very close to what I pictured you to be…. your face is more mature but other than that….perception and reality weren’t too far off base

2 Questions 1)what ever happened to Track Star… do you guys even keep in touch anymore? 2)Same deal w/Military Man… I know ya’ll broke up but have you managed to remain friends at all

I’ve gotten so much great advice and support and encouragement from the people on this blog and I’m honestly glad that I stumbled upon it….thanks for doing it! I know NYC will be a wonderful opportunity for you and I wish you much success and happiness on all of your endeavors :-)

By Mia

December 13, 2005 10:17 AM | Link to this

  • TrackStar and I had one last falling out on the phone over the fact that I woudln’t give a long distance relationship with him a chance. This was about a year ago, right after I broke up with Military Man. I really do hope he finds whatever he is seeking in love and in life.

  • Military Man I tried calling when Katrina hit cause his family was from that area too. His cell phone number had been changed. I also tried to hit up one of his friends and I left a voicemail but no call back. So at least I tried but clearly him and I were not meant to remain cool.

ATL- My niece is dealing with some issues that her parents haven’t addressed. I am glad she chose me, but I am hurt that she didn’t call. We moved away from that apartment just before Thanksgiving. I talked with New Guy this morning and he’s ok with me getting her if my sister approves. I’ve recommended a counselor for her, so I hope my sister takes her. Last night she was so relieved all she could do was hug her. My son told her Sunday night where he thought she would go, so if she had been thinking, we would have had her back Sunday.

Mama Mia ain’t exactly thrilled. Our conversations go something like this:

  • Why are you leaving your house?

  • How long you plan on staying at home?

  • Why are you leaving your house?

  • What are you going to do with your car?

  • Why are you leaving your house?

  • Did I already ask why you are leaving your house?

My mom is seriously hung up on the fact that I’m leaving my house. Home ownership is a big deal to my family especially since we grew up in the projects. My brother says, and I quote, “You are crazy as hell to move back here. There are people up here dying to be in your position down there.”

Okay, it is OMG, THE NEW YORK TIMES, that’s a double congrats and nice to hear it is NOT FoxNews or something like that. chuckle. But come to think of it, they do need some “balanced” don’t they?

Okay, topic, and the question of ‘is dating better elsewhere’? While certain areas of the country probably have a higher level of compatible people, I learned long ago the grass is always greener rings true. And it truly is, since the grass you have been walking on is getting brown. Simple nature. A friend in Boston recently recommended I move to Harvard Square, since no one there will care where I go to church, or even go, and will not fire me for having the “wrong” political party bumper sticker. LOL

Renting my home and living in it are two different things. I will NEVER be able to find or afford something like what I have now up north. Just ain’t happenning cause the housing markets are so different.

Too many blog moments to pick just one. But in the good old days back when the blog first started I thought it was so funny how people jumped on me for doing a background check. That was hilarious to me. And there is no way I can pick a favorite or favorites in terms of bloggers. Each of you bring something unique to this blog. I’m thankful and blessed to have engaged with bloggers and lurkers in such a personal way…well as personal as you can get for the internet.

yeah das the words missing from the question “is dating is better elsewhere?” are “for me.” that’s what everyone is really asking … LOL.

Mia,

Old news (last July), but still interesting. Atlanta beat NYC overall, but NYC has more singles.

Feel as if you’re looking for love in all of the wrong places? Look no further—the Denver-Boulder metro area is America’s best city for singles. Topping our list for the second consecutive year, the Mile High City edged out larger metros like Boston and San Francisco, thanks to its booming job market, relatively low cost of living and large university population. Our fifth annual listing of America’s Best Cities for Singles ranks 40 of the largest metropolitan areas in six different categories: nightlife, culture, job growth, number of other singles, cost of living alone and coolness.

Mia,

You are as lovely as I pictured you would be. Thank you for sharing tidbits of your life with us for a year and change worth. Thank you for having enough insight to reach out to those who may not readily read the relationship page but you knew would respond to something new and innovative. Thank you for providing us a forum where we could discuss important issues, share stories, give someone in need a shoulder to lean on, give great advice and form friendships even if they only remain online. You have done good and you are leaving us in very capable hands. Here’s to a JOB WELL DONE - I tip my hat to you young lady. You should be proud of yourself.

I have a question Did you change MM’s age to was he really only in his 20’s?

Mia, not to bring you down but have you truly thought this move through. You have a beautiful home that you own & your going to go back to renting, snow and the high speed life of NYC? I understand when someone wants to move up in life, but it seems like your already on top. If not meeting a man here is making you leave, heck, take two weeks off, travel, find one & bring him back. I wish you the best either way!

By MissHeavenSong

FYI Tamara it’s not having a man that’s making Mia leave, working for the New York Times is her dream job. Go back and read yesterday’s blog, had you been with us from the “beginning” you would know that Mia is a go getter

By tamara

December 13, 2005 02:35 PM | Link to this

No, miss heaven, I have not been with you from the beginning but I have enjoyed the last couple weeks of MIA’s blogs. I did read in many of them that she is not happy about finding that perfect mate (in Atlanta), that she loves her home (in Atlanta) and she loves her job. AJC is right up the with the NYT. For me, it wouldn’t be worth moving to a cold hearted and cold weathered city. Look at what she has accomplished here. The competition in NY will be much harder than ATL and I’m sure she’ll be great at handling that on her own. I just think she’s giving up too much & should listen to mom, who know her accomplishments better than any of us.

By BlackIce

December 13, 2005 02:38 PM | Link to this

There is no way I would pass up my dream job (IF I were childless, single, etc) just because I own a house? And because I have a “good” job? No way. I would fly to my deam job!

Sup Tamara -

As MissH noted, this is her dream job. In the journalism world working for the NY Times is as big as it gets. With that on yo resume u can justabout write yo own ticket to go work for any paper in the country. I think she’s keeping her house, so she can always come back to Atlanta.

By MissHeavenSong

December 13, 2005 02:42 PM | Link to this

Wrong, she’s not giving up too much she’s gaining a lot we can’t always take our parents advice we have to step out on faith and just go for ours! I have a question, my exboyfriend and I broke up a few weeks back. We declared we would be friends and all that good stuff. We dated for a while, and times were good and we didnt have a bad breakup and we still care for one another. So i was wondering should I get him a small Christmas gift. I honestly want to but not sure if that will send mixed signals, but if I dont I think it looks like I am p!ssed about something. I cant call it.

Tamara if she passed this up she could regret it for the rest of her life.

I almost fell out my chair laughing when you said the AJC was right up there with the NY Times. The NY Times and Washington Post are the creme of the crop of the newspaper world. U have the Chicago, Boston and LA papers after that. The AJC comes is in the 3rd tier after that.

It’d be like turning down a job with Mercedes to work for Hyundai.

By abc

‘Course Chrysler bought out (ahem, merged with) Mercedes and the Benz has been having some pretty miserable customer satisfaction ratings ever since :-)

Good luck in New York Mia, here’s wishing you the best of all things!

Back to respond to more comments.

  • Last day at the AJC is tomorrow but today is my last blog as I have a lot to wrap up on my last day.

  • I start Jan 9 so I have given myself a few weeks to hang out, move and pack.

  • Ignatius I don’t handle the relationships forum and I think because of job changes and being short stuffed the forum has fallen to the wayside.

By ATLborn

December 13, 2005 03:10 PM | Link to this

Sup Abc - actually, Benz bought out Chrysler, hence u Chrysler no longer appears on the Fortune 500. Most of the dissatisfaction I’ve read about the Benz now comes from the C-class model they made, the affordable (cheap) model.

But, if you have a pretty recent model Benz and are willing to trade it for a Hyundai I’ll find you one to trade with u.

By Mia

Tamara - I respect your opinion. My mom and many others do not understand the nature of the business. Having the New York Times on my resume will be like having a golden ticket. I can go anywhere and do anything…if I want to…once I’ve been there.

NYC may seem cold and harsh to some but for me that is home. This will be a new challenge to see if this small fish can make it in the ocean. Yes, all I have done here has been great…but just imagine what I could do there as long as I keep full steam ahead.

ATL, a good paying job is a great success in life if your happy with your job. I make good money but I hate my job. If everyone followed their dreams we would all live in fantasy land. I am very happy for Mia, please people don’t get me wrong. If you read the AJC regularly you had to catch the article about all the northerners moving here for better weather, home prices and friendly folks. Very seldom does one return to the north. Atlanta has more opportunities than any other city in america. P.S. what could I say to make you go ahead & fall out of that chair? LOL

Tamara, where are you from? The kind of provincial thinking that would lead to a statement like this:

I understand when someone wants to move up in life, but it seems like your already on top

Could only have been fostered in an existence that has been lived out in a 25 -75 mile area. There is much more to life than a job at the AJC (who actually had, when i was there, one of the worst pay rates in the print industry when compared to the booked ad dollars and readership), a house and some funky friends. This is her DREAM JOB. The complacency in your statement is one of the things that frustrates me so about “us” when we get a house that costs more than $100K or a job that makes us comfortable. I applaud Tiffany for stepping out of a “comfortable” situation and chasing her dreams and daring to be great. This is no time to cast doubts on her decision or project insecurities about your life onto hers.

By Mia

if you’re making good money, but hate your job….well, why not find another? i would never work somewhere making good money and not like my job, that makes no sense to me.you seem to be a “fairly intellegent” person - we should all have self satisfaction in what ever we do!..MIA, GOOD LUCK BABY GIRL, I HOPE ALL YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE I’M GOING TO MISS YOU EVEN THOUGH I’VE BEEN BLOGGING IN A MASK BY USING THIS NAME, CAUSE I’M A REGULAR ON HERE** and i’m sure you know who i am don’t you? if not let me know cause i’m leaving early today and wanna take my mask off.

Mia, I have some golden tickets on my resume & i’m still unhappy with my job of 10 years now. What if you hate your job there and how long do you feel like you would have to hang in there just to put it on your resume? You should feel like you have made it in life instead of still trying to get somewhere. I wish I had accomplished as much as you have at your age.

By Mia

December 13, 2005 03:22 PM | Link to this

Thanks Tazzee…and keep me posted on your pending move.

Aggwit hit the nail on the head. I mean trust I really thought a lot about this decision. And I said just that to myself…I’m young, single, no kids and if my only solid tie is my house…I need to take this chance. The earning potential in NYC can’t be beat. One of my friends did buy a condo for $180K…yes her place cost more than mine and is smaller than mine but that is just the nature of housing in the north vs the south. Down here I could afford to buy for space even if I don’t use half the space…up there I will have to be smart about it.

By ATLborn

Tamara - The difference here is that Mia isn’t chasing blindly after her dream, it has been offered to her.

If she didn’t have the offer already and were about to quit the AJC, move to NYC in hope of getting the job then I’d be with u.

Unlike most folks in the world, she has a chance to realize her dream. U would have a hard time convincing anyone on this job that you would turn down something that has been a long time dream of yours so that u could stay in Atlanta with your house. A house that you wouldn’t have to give up either.

Tamara I know you prolly have dated/known at least one guy that didn’t that claims he coulda “gone pro” at some sport but didn’t realize his dream for whatever reason, and the guy just goes on and on all the dayuum time about how he coulda went pro. Be like a broken record er time u see him.
I know that plenty of the ladies on the blog know a guy like that.
And all yall know that dude is bout the most pathetic guy yall know, always harping on it. Like it’s a claim to fame. He’s da “woulda coulda shoulda oughta” brotha.

If Mia, or anyone else for that matter, could be like that if they choose not to pursue their dream when it’s offered to them.

Tamara - I wish an opportunity would come your way so you could enjoy what you do. You said golden tickets…as in multiple…I wish I had multiple on my resume cause I would really utilize them.

I came to Atlanta intending to do 3-5 years if not longer…I’m going to NYC with thee same approach. My background is very diverse so who knows what might happen. I may leave newspapers to work radio or leave newspapers to work in TV…you just never know.

NYC would give me a chance to pursue a masters at Columbia in journalism. It may give me the chance to do some freelance stuff. I can’t predict the future I just know a fraction of the opportunities available.

I agree a person should feel like they have made it in life and I have. I have made it from the projects to homeownership. I am BLESSED with online and offline friends from coast to coast. I am thankful to be in the position I am in and the positions I have been in.

And for the record…because I want it to be clear to all…I WAS NOT JOB HUNTING. The NYT came to me based off of an old resume and word of mouth in the industry about me. I felt this was a sign from God presenting me with this opportunity when it was not something I was seeking.

So I’m extremely blessed and thankful and I’m not done yet. I know there is so much more for me to achieve personally and professionally no matter where I live.

Tamara just be happy for Mia. In my life I’ve found this to be true - when I finally got to the point of being joyous at the blessings of others, I was able to be experience joy in my own life. Based on what you’ve said about your current situation, it wouldn’t hurt to try it.

Mia - most definitely because I expect you to come back for my going away party if I do move.

thats the thing, I said you were projecting your insecurities and nothing you have written since then has changed my opinion. In fact you have only enhanced it. The not leaving your job, being happy in your lifes position is YOUR issue.

Now, sharing wisdom is one thing. Just being a wet blanket is another.

The fact that you said you were not “fostered” in life is especially ironic because it was not only a malopropism but also an acurate description of the reason behind your “hating” so you incorrectly but somehow correctly used the word. Amazing.

ATL, great analogy with the “coulda woulda dudes”….with that said, in 5 years, watch ima be on the pga tour. hahahhahaha

Tamara - U know why the majority of folks in the Atlanta area are transplants?
Cuz just about half of all native Atlantans move to other cities. Hell I even ran into 2 bruthas from Bankhead when I was living in Colorado. NYC is full of native Atlantans, folks that wanted to exp. the biggest city the U.S. has to offer.

True not many cities offer as much opp. as Atlanta, but NYC is not one of them. An educated person can do well in NYC. Especially if they have a gig with the NY Times.

If prices of homes, job opportunities and not wanting to face cold weather are the determining factors for you, then one can easily use your argument to have someone move from Atlanta to Houston. The housing is cheaper, loads of opportunity there and cold weather is far less a factor there than in Atlanta. Atlanta can have bone chilling cold weather. Shoot we’ve been in the 30s for the past few days, I doubt if Houston has seen the 30s three times in the past few months.

No need to pass your fears on to Mia. You should be supportive of her pursuing her dream.

But to say ATL is the best there is out there for you is one thing…that may not be true for others…you come off as being a REAL negative person…someone I would not want in my life. With all the BS people have to deal with in day to day life the last thing you need on ya team is a person filled w/ negativity. Sorry that your current s** is so unhappy.

Congratulations Mia on your new position with The New York Times! I’ve been lurking from the beginning and did not want to miss the opportunity to wish you well. I remember you posted you would not go back home unless you got a job with The Times. Now the opportunity has presented itself. A position with The NY Times is the ultimate in journalism. Continue to speak those things which you want into existence. Many continued blessings!!

Mia I sent you an email…. keep us posted on what’s going on with you…. I am so excited for you!!!

Tamara For the right opportunity you would move, it’s not about giving up your life it’s about moving on to bigger and better opportunities…. life is about taking chances and stepping out on faith and really being spiritually in tune enough with God (or whatever power you believe in) to know when he’s guiding you to do something…. it sounds like that’s what Mia has done. This isn’t some flighty unplanned thing… the people at the Times wanted her and she’s been tremendously blessed with the opportunity to go… I don’t think many of us would give up on taking our dream jobs if things went as smoothly as they seem to have gone with Mia and her situation

Mia, one last goodbye. Tamara, I hope you mean well, you sound like a basically sweet person. Golden tickets, parachutes, taking the cheese, cutting the cheese, whatever..I had rather chase a dream and know for sure than to sit on my behind and forever wonder “what if..” “Comfort, or revelation: God owes us one of these, but surely not both.” ~Mignon McLaughlin

Mia, if you ever freelance for the Rolling Stone or National Lampoon, you mention me. I still have a High School bet that I could get my name in there before I die. And I am sure you will feel kindred to the spirits that still hang at The Algonquin.
