On the hunt for gas: It’s a jungle out there

Deep thoughts from the asphalt jungle.

No gas and the tempers are growing thin. First of all, everyone goes everywhere at the same time. You might want to go late or go real early and you’ll find the gas.

We normally gauge human behavior by those who frequent the QT on Roswell Road. Today they are a bit testy. The line forms at the end of the right-turn lane some six miles away. If you want something from the store, be sure to move slowly as not to provoke the motorist in the gas line. God help you if they think you’re cheating. They will strike at a moment’s notice.

Here’s a tip. Not all gas stations are on the main drag. Those on the back or secondary roads have had shorter lines.

Disturbance calls normally arise as a result of drugs, booze, women, and sometimes small farm animals. Most of the time the path of least resistance is to lock someone up. It usually insures we don’t get a second call.

Gas-line disturbances normally target someone cutting in line or two people who thought they were next. For your information, we’re a lot more tolerant. The officer is most likely willing to get the two parties together and talk it out—while the second officer fills the cruiser while nobody is looking.

Be patient out there you gas commandos.

I was hoping you’d chime in on this Lt. Steve. I just hope there is a little gas for me and the wife come Friday…a little cash for it couldn’t hurt either.

I am continually astounded at the stupidity of your average southerner (and I include myself in the southern part of the formula, although perhaps not the stupid). I can’t believe people really truly think, some twenty or thirty years after the Texas oil boom ENDED, that we still get all our oil from Texas.

No, no, my brothers and sisters….your oil comes from Prince Akmed Akbar, his twenty sisters, his fifty camels, and his fleet of 200 armored Mercedes.

Just like snow and bread, people heard Ike and Texas and created a short supply.

Gotta love it. Are we SURE inbreeding doesn’t run rampant, or is this just another indictment of our fine educational system?

(yes, yes, I’m grumpy, this bailout thingie is p** me off more and more every day)

Cassie- I had to quit reading about the bailout mess. They weren’t there for John and Jane Taxpayer so while should we be there for them? Let them dip into those fat retirement plans and bail themselves out.

I have a family member in Houston who is high up in the refinery biz. This is going to affect us for a while. Even though the damage was minimal, there is no electricity to run the refineries. The few supplies from sources online are only shipping to the stations they have contracts with. All the stations contracted with the other refineries are just SOL until the juice gets back on. Then they can refine. Then they can ship.

Dust off the bikes people and be glad it’s not 104 degrees out. Let’s hope that Sonny Dum-Dum doesn’t shut down the schools again. What a mess that was.

As I look out my office window, I see the shell station was able to refuel today, and people are not only filling up their cars, they are also filling up several cans each.

All pirates walk the plank eventually….

I deliver pizzas for Domino’s. I go through a lot of gas. Last Saturday, about 6 or 7 pm, I hit empty, and had to find a gas station. Last Saturday.

I had great difficulty. Four gas stations were empty. I finally found a shell with no regular gas, but it had the medium grade (plus). I paid $4.15.

That people are still having difficulty finding gas frightens me. What is this world coming to? Why doesn’t somebody DO something?

I’ll do something pizza boy, next time I’ll order Papa John’s because it sounds like Domino’s, along with having lousy pizzas, has whiny drivers as well. BOO HOO why doesn’t somebody do something? A friggin’ disgrace.

Cassie- I took my daughter to get a book for school tonight. All 6 gas stations between us and Barnes & Noble were out. Just to be on the safe side (and after reading the headlines tonight)I wouldn’t give out the address for that station near your job. You might need it before the week’s out.

Stone- take it easy on the kid. At least he’s working. Too many of these kids these days are playing videos, waiting for us to fill up thier cars. This just might be the first time he’s experienced something like this. Back in the 70’s I asked my parents the same question. They couldn’t answer it then any more than we can give an answer now.

Where’s analchord? he’s usually chimed in by now. I saw Fred on another column. Bashing some guy over there almost as bad as he goes after Stone.

What makes me really mad are the carloads of joyriding teenagers waiting in line every night to get their $5 worth of gas so they can ride around wasting it, just to do the same the next night.

Cassie, it’s not about the oil. It’s about the oil refineries. And yes, our refineries are in the Texas area. In addition to that, we can only get our “gas” from certain refineries since we have extra requirements imposed on us by the EPA due to our smog levels.

Once a refinery is shut down, as they were for Ike, it takes a significant amount of time to restart them. Thus, until the refineries are back online, you can only use what is already in the pipeline (pardon the pun). This, combined with the panic mode of the consumers is what is causing the spotty shortages.

On another note…Lt. Rose. if the small farm animal is the cause for the disturbance call, do you lock them up as well? :)

How many gas stations employee off duty police officers to help with traffic? I am betting none of them. If the police are paid to patrol off duty then I am sure folks will act right all day long. The heard mentality really is alive. Sonny really could care less and he is Gone FISHING.

Ok…. Now I’m P*ssed !!!!!!

Gov. Sonny says this gas shortage is “self-induced”?

WTF ???? What planet is the governor living on?

What are chances we’ll see him waiting in line to buy fuel? Wanna bet his jet and helicopter have plenty of gas?

Officer Steve is going to have his full in another day or so. Gas stations are quickly becoming warzones. Somebody is going to get shot because they cut in line. I AM NOT JOKING !!!! Tempers are out of control here in Atlanta.

If I don’t find gas this afternoon I will not be able to drive to work tomorrow. I am not the only one here at my job saying the same thing. THIS IS A FRIGGIN’ DISASTER !!!!

I called the governors office this morning to complain. I was told not be believe what I read in the newspaper because they are biased against the governor anyway. WTF ?????? The woman on the phone gave a line of BS about how his office is cracking down on price gougers…. I’ll pay $7 per gallon if I could find it at this point.

Where is this Perdue clown? Someone said in a posting above he is on a fishing trip. Is this true? If so, it’s time to launch a full-scale assault on state government.

People….. Call Gov. Sonny’s office. Demand accountability. Demand he retract his statement about this crisis being “self-induced”. Demand action NOW !!!!!

I NEED GAS AND CAN’T GET IT !!!!!!

Folks, I live north here in Gainesville. No gas here either most of the time, at least in my neck of the woods. Gov Sonny’s comments really anger me this week. I work in a job where people are calling for help with food. FOOD. And they have no gas to get to us. No money to put gas in the car. I think Gov Sonny’s comments are really short-sighted. When one is on empty, they can’t ride all over “ATLANTA” looking for gas. Sigh. I am going to go call my Dad who is in his 70’s and has lived through a recession or two. I am only 40, a mere babe, with two children to raise and I’m not sure I have a clue. The thought of having to purchase gas ARMED scares the fool out of me. Hello?!? Guns and gas are not a terrific mix here. However, perhaps then Sonny will get a clue about being a LEADER.

I saw in the paper this morning that metro Atlanta has “ample” fuel in metro ATL. On some errands today in East and North Cobb, I passed 13 gas stations that had no fuel. Passed one station that only had premium with a line stretched a block. I wouldn’t call that “ample.” I hope that we will learn from this episode and next time minimally do these two things: 1) promote good behavior regarding topping off or hoarding, 2) consider some type of rationing by requiring a minimal purchase for auto/truck. Don’t apply the minimums for those filling small tanks for businesses (lawn, construction, etc.)

Barbara, no most of our oil does not come from Canada. It comes straight down the pipe from OPEC and most of it comes from Iraq and Russia. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Now as for gas and lines, Schools should ban kids from driving to school and parents should take their little keys from them. Anyone needing gas for work should not go top off their tanks every other day. I live 45 miles out and drive into work every morning. My station in the boonies has 700 gallons and they are restricting gas per customer to 10$. Not ten gallons but dollars. This is to get you in town to find gas. By the time you find it your almost out. Its getting worse and not better.

Now the way I see it, if the United States does not start drilling for oil, the price will never be controlled. Once we start drilling, yes it will take a few years to produce BUT cost will come down because they know if they want to continue to sell to the US they need to keep it down. Supply and demand you see. In a few years we wont need their supplys and the demand will be lower and guess who is left holding all their oil in the big tanks. Yes OPEC. It is very important we drill but if they are going to open the drilling it needs to be with the stipulation that its domestic drilling only. We will not sell this oil to OPEC. It stays here.

The news media is jumping on this bandwagon and creating a panic. People run out and buy gas just in case and there is a shortage. My husband and I have both bought gas in the last 3 days. At different times we both drove up to pumps, no wait and filled our tanks. I drive 22 miles to work and have yet to see a gas station with no gas.

What gives? Is this a very localized shortage? Is the news showing just a few stations with a story and ignoring the ones that are doing fine?

I see these long lines on TV and haven’t witnessed anything like this in person.

In that the Gov. Purdue is basically blaming us for the shortage of gas in Atl and saying there is really no shortage at all should tell us how far out of touch not only the politicians in DC are with main stream America- but it even goes to the state level. Hopefully the people in this country will stand up on election day and vote all incumbants out of office. We need to finally send a message to the so called leaders in this country that either you do your job and stay in touch or you will be out of a job!

I’d love to be able to have gas in my car to get to my doctor’s appts, but NO the dumb@$$ SUVs are filling up 20+ gallons. I drive a Civic - give me 8 gallons and I’ll be fine for a month….

QT in Roswell has employees forming lines in their parking lot. I appreciated their commitment to bringing in more employees to make sure the lines moved in an orderly manner and that no one killed me over a gallon of gas.

Stations in Alpharetta, Roswell and East Cobb are mostly empty, at least in the stations I’ve visited. Sam’s Club was out yesterday, too.

Yes the gas issue sucks. Yes it is miserable waiting in line or driving to find gas. But let’s think for a moment what got us here.

1) The U.S. Military….Why? Bec they made Hummers cool at 12 mpg

2) Soccer moms/dad…Why? Bec they had to have the biggest damn car around to get Johnny and Betty to football and cheerleading.

3) Anyone owning the following: a) Suburban b) Sequoia c) 4Runner d) Dually e) Semi that is not used to haul goods f) Expedition g) Excursion

Should I go on?

So before you blame others and the car manufacturers remember this….they do not build them unless you buy them.

The moral of the story. Back in the 50’s through the 80’s families got along just fine with four kids and a station wagon.

Cool? Maybe not but at least we got more than eight to 10 mpg.

See ya, wouldn’t wanna be ya.

P.S. I filled up last Saturday and I still have a half of tank of gas and I drive 20 miles to/from work. Ciao!

Sonny said his “ample supply” comment was “taken out of context.” What a shock! A politician claiming his comment was “taken out of context.” Ever since Ike the “industry” has been pointing fingers at everyone else and pretty much blamed - you got it - the public. We’ve heard all this blah, blah, blah and all the news media does is keep the panic going with their “in-depth, team coverage” of some talking head standing at a gas station. No one has the brass ones to confront anyone from the “industry” to find out the real reason. Easier to blame John Q. It’s been said the 20% of the Country’s gas comes from the Texas refineries (yea, yea, I’ve heard all the pipeline stuff). Does 20% of the Country have a shortage? Nope. What do you think your relative in the “biz” is going to say? “Oh, yea, we’re screwing you because Mom Nature gave us the perfect out?!
