Crime & punishment
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Some reports filed recently with Sandy Springs Police:
That’s what 911 is for…
A woman who lives on Northland Drive was backing her car down the driveway when she saw a man standing there. She asked him what he was doing. He said he was walking up her driveway to “stretch his legs.” She told him to leave her property and then she went to the store.
Later, on the way home, she saw the same man walking on Windsor Parkway. When she got home she noticed her back carport door was unlocked.
She found a jewelry box sitting on a chair in the living room. The box, previously left on the bedroom dresser, was empty of the jewelry. The victim in this case is an 86-year old woman and this is a sad story because the man in the driveway giving such a lame excuse “stretching my legs” would surely cause the victim to stay home and call the police, which would have at least kept the burglary from happening.
Well, just like my daughter once said “Sometimes even the blind squirrel finds his nuts,” and just like on Adam-12, another officer, checking the area after the lookout was given, spotted a man walking along the road. The man fit the lookout so the officer stopped him and questioned the man. Turns out the man had her jewelry in his pocket and after he and the jewelry were identified by the woman, the 41-year-old man was arrested for burglary.
Robbery
Two men recently stopped to use an ATM machine at a Wachovia bank on Roswell Road around 10 p.m. As the driver placed his ATM card in the machine, two men in gray hoodies approached from each side of the window and pulled weapons. They ordered the driver to withdraw money from the ATM but he said he did not have any funds. They took the two victim’s wallets, cell phones and a check made to one of the victims. Both victims received injuries to the face from being struck with the guns. This is a good example of why you do NOT need to conduct ATM transactions after dark, folks.
Thefts A woman reported that someone entered her office on Roswell Road and took her wallet. She had about $43 cash and credit cards. The card was later used at Macy’s for $78, $313, and $375, and then later at an Apple Store for over $300.
A man on Roberts Landing Cove said someone stole his $200 trash can.
A woman reported she spilled her drink on the floor at the Kroger located at 4920 Roswell Road. She placed her wallet on the counter as she leaned down to clean the drink. She walked away for a few moments and when she returned the wallet and credit cards were gone. A credit card was later used for just under $500 at some unknown location. This is also a great example of how thefts never happen as you imagine or see on TV. It always happens much FASTER than you expect. In public places, don’t leave your valuable unattended even for seconds. Keep them in your pockets or on you.
More shopping disasters: A woman reported that while she was shopping at Publix, someone took her wallet from her purse located in the “steal me” position in the shopping cart.
A woman in the 200 block of Garden Court said someone stole her mail and then later had a new Citi-Bank credit card made. Two purchases for just under $7,000 were later made on the card. Later still, she found that a $5,000 purchase was made at Best Buy and another $9,600 charge was made to a contractor.
A woman on North Devereux reported someone stolen her mail and checks used to pay bills. Two checks were later forged and written for just over $1,800.
Lesson learned: DO NOT put checks in your mailbox to be picked up by the postal service. Drop them off at a USPS secured mailbox.
Burglary
Someone broke into a vacant home on Windsor Parkway and took a stove from the house.
5700 blk of Northside Drive 30327 8/26 The homeowner in the 5700 block of Northside Drive reported that a number of items have been taken from her home during a time when she was having extensive renovations done. She said there were many workers unsupervised who could have had access.
Arrests
A patrol officer noted a tag on a car that appeared to be expired. He ran the tag and it came back expired. The driver pulled into the Chevron Station in the 5300 block of Roswell Road, got out of the car and then ran off. The officer placed the man’s lookout on the radio. When he checked the car, he found I.D. that matched what the man looked like. The officer ran the license and it showed the man was wanted in Fulton County for Failure to Appear. Meanwhile, another officer located the driver and took him into custody. He was later taken to Fulton County Jail.
Around 2:30 a.m. an officer, responding to an alarm on Northridge Road, found a car with a driver inside. The driver appeared to be asleep. The officer knocked on the window several times to wake the driver. When the driver woke, he saw the officer and attempted to start the car. In the process, the driver activated the windshield wipers, hood release, horn, radio, trunk, and just about everything else but the ignition. Giving up, he finally opened the door which omitted a strong odor of alcohol. He was arrested for Public Intoxication.

The biggest crime is that we taxpayers have to cover the cost of prosecuting and then supporting these thugs. Anyone who is against abortion or handing out free condoms should have to work in a jail for 6 months.

A guy goes somewhere. He gets drunk. He goes back to his car. Realizing he is too drunk to drive he decides to sleep it off in his car. He is then arrested for public intoxication.
Moral learned: Screw sleeping it off, drive home drunk because you might make it without killing someone or passing a cop. Sleeping it off WILL however get you arrested.
Am I the only one who sees something wrong with this picture?

No Fred you’re not. I slept off many a good time in my car. I think getting arrested while sleeping it off is just a way for someone to make quota.
Unless of course you parked your car in the middle of the freeway to snooze.

Dixie and Fred - while the person sleeping it off may not be doing anyone any harm, at that hour of night or early morning, when officers, paid to protect and serve the public, see a car parked where it does not belong, are just doing their duty since it could be someone there to burglarize a business or someone’s home. Moral of the story is always DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE - get a taxi home, or have someone pick you up if you are too drunk to drive.
By Fred

I guess Jake but just damn, the cop taps the window to check, that’s cool. Drunk dude wakes up, see the cop and turns his ignition on to lower his power window. He then “activated the windshield wipers, hood release, horn, radio, trunk, and just about everything else but the ignition” (I somehow doubt he was trying to start the car given that description so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out he was trying to roll down his power window).
Call a Taxi or get someone to drive you home: maybe in his drunken state he got mad and stormed out of where he was and didn’t have a cell phone so he could call a taxi. Maybe he didn’t have a money to pay for a taxi even if he DID have a phone to call a taxi. Maybe he has no friends.
The bottom line is he did the responsible thing under the circumstances and got tossed in jail for it. Hoo-freaking-ray Barney “the intolerant Baptist” Fife, the arresting ociffer (typo intended).
Had a soldier of mine at Ft Hood who had a similar screwing. Drove to a bar. Got drunk. Called a cab. Cab came. Soldier walks from the door of the club to the cab and gets arrested by Killeen’s finest for public intoxication. A good soldier gets arrested for doing the right thing, but it doesn’t end there for a soldier. He got an article 15, busted in rank, loses pay, gets extra duty, all for doing what he was instructed to do, don’t drive drunk. And no, he wasn’t belligerent on his 20 foot walk from the front door of the club to the cab, nor did he p** in the potted plants on the way out.

I cannot count the numerous times in a grocery store where I see purses in the steal me seat, wide open, with coupons, cash and credit cards visible. The person is no where near the cart but at the other end of the aisle. I approached a lady once and she got very snippy with me. Thank goodness I’m not a thief.

The simple way I avoid being “raped” by the police is not breaking any laws. Period.
When driving, obey all traffic laws.
When socializing at a place that serves alcoholic beverages, socialize, don’t get drunk.
When getting drunk, do it at home and hide the car keys so you can’t find them when you blackout and decide to drive to the bar.
If drinking and driving is against the law, why do we allow bars to have parking lots?

Dixie, Stone, Cindy - Have any of you lived here longer than….fifteen years? Do any of you remember a double murder of two brothers (last name Phelps) near Chatsworth while they were working on some grounds their church owned in the mountains, by some coked up idiot who subsequently fled to Arizona? Try as I might, I can’t recall names, dates or anything….anyone else? google isn’t very helpful. If you google “Chatsworth, double homicide, and phelps” you get lots of useless data. And evidently there are lots of double homicides in both Chatsworth GA and CA!

Taco Mac has more beers than I could possibly buy for the house and I don’t have to freeze my own glasses. Plus I worked pretty hard to get that big 20oz glass..
I’m going to go to Taco Mac and I’m going to have more than one beer. Fortunately I’m within 1.5 miles of home, but I’ve crashed in the front seat of the truck waiting for the cab or just to sleep it off because as a young lad I didn’t have $30,000 for cab fair (you taken a cab lately?).
Frankly, in this state a car is generally considered an extension of the home so if I’m drunk in my car I am drunk at home.

She’s was a star athlete, college graduate, former mayor of her hometown, governor of the largest state in the union (with an 83% approval rating, I might add) adored mother of five children, a loving wife and, by almost every one’s measure, an all around modern, successful woman, yet all some people can see is she used to be a beauty queen and dismiss her as just a has been. She is anti choice, and that cinches it for me. That is a matter that has no business being in the political arena, and anyone who mentions it doesn’t get any of my time (but I do reserve the right to mock). She is also a VERY junior politician; there are plenty of other female politicians with families who are more qualified if perhaps less photogenic. I think McCain just needed someone to combat the “cuteness” of Obama (and I’m voting for Obama, I just feel this was a poor choice).

Very well put Cassie. Your views are sound and your argument convincing. You explained why you had a problem with this pick as vice president and, though I may disagree with you, I respect your well thought out and clearly stated opinion. My reaction earlier was due to the fact that I have read plenty of moronic, derogatory, sexist, dismissive crap about this accomplished, successful, decent woman who has already achieved much more than most people have in their entire lives. We Americans are better than that. Unfortunately, its not OK today to just disagree with one’s political viewpoints, but rather there seems to be a need to belittle or dismiss the opponent’s accomplishments and dehumanize the person to make a point. She is so much more than a has been beauty queen. If I overreacted then please accept my apology.

I think everyone should respect that she has accomplished much. Close to home. Is the whole family moving to D.C. if they win?
My primary objection is a Cassie echo. She’s anti-choice. Enhanced 10x. Second objection, she condones her child having a child. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT BE HAVING CHILDREN. The law doesn’t even trust this child to drink for 4 more years but she’s supposedly mature enough to raise a human life? Not.
Maybe if her mother and father had been home more & emphasized waiting to start a family then this girl would have had her own life for a few years before taking on another 24/7.
While I respect Palin’s accomplishments, I hate the fact that it seems to have come at a cost to her children.
In no way does that fall in line with my thinking.
McCain was close to having my vote. I have voted in every election for 29 years. Now staying home and saving the gas looks more appealing. And I live 2.4 miles from my polling site.

Children should not be having children, but it happens. What do you do? Teenagers think they are invincible, and that “stuff” happens to other people. You can talk to them until you’re blue in the face, but you just don’t know for sure what they will do when the time comes. They think, if at all, in the moment, not in consequences. If you had a teenage son or daughter who wound up in a similar situation, would you not support them?
We live in a great country. You have the right to vote, and the choice as to whether or not to exercise that right. You have your opportunity to speak out at the polls. Not vote? What example does that set for your children? I much prefer to make the my own choice, even if it turns out to be the wrong one, than to sit back and let others do it for me.

As I stated I’ve voted in EVERY election for 29 years. Many years ago I called on the principal of my school to make an announcement to release all teachers early so they would have extra time to vote. He’s done it every election since. According to Webster’s dictionary - vote means the expression of one’s choice. So casting a vote for someone you disapprove of is a lie. Refusal to participate is also casting a vote. A vote of disapproval. Don’t you think they take note the number of registered voters who didn’t vote?
I do have a 17 year old daughter. I make sure she and her boyfriend ( of more than 3 years) have a supply of condoms at all times. If she became pregnant I would have her do the same thing I did when I was 18 and my contraception failed. Have an abortion.
Yes mistakes happen. DO you perpetuate the mistake or remedy it. We were given the intelligence to go to the hospital and get stitches when we have an accident. (Well at least SOME of us have that intelligence)
Many of the people who weren’t aborted and should have been are described here in Lt. Steve’s article. Others in the article are victims of the people who should have been aborted.
Most of the people I hear who are against welfare are the same ones who are against abortion. WAKE UP PEOPLE What do you think becomes of these babies? The taxpayers end up supporting them financially. And lets not EVEN get started on the emotional burden a child carries thier whole life knowing they were unwanted. Life is hard enough without you adding that extra burden.
I have no remorse for the abortion I had. If I had followed through with that pregnancy my current children would never have been born. And I adore them. Or if I’d given the baby up for adoption it would have taken the chance away from another baby to be adopted. I’m happy I did not take some other baby’s chance away. And insomniac - I sleep very well knowing some other baby was adopted instead of mine That person had a better chance of a permanent home because I didn’t contribute to the population problem.

OMG, did I write Obama? No wonder I was struck my lightning yesterday.
I hate to reveal this, but I’m betraying my deep south political heritage and was considering voting for McCain. However, he made two serious (IMO) political blunders: the STOOPID Paris Hilton Ad, and picking Palin as his running mate. Another thing that makes me uncomfortable in general about the republican party, which is why every morning when I wake up and realize that I’m really contemplating voting for the enemy, is that they have become a party of fanatics. Compare the daughters of Islam and the daughters of conservative Christianity. I see the daughters of both camps being used as pawns and baby making machines, and that’s a shame.
But you know, otherwise: stop touching my guns, stay out of my life (The title of President does not equal God, so stop legislating or trying to legislate morality), stop stealing my money (it ain’t yours, you didn’t earn it, and I don’t really see that you are doing such a great job spending it either), learn to balance the government checkbook, stop violating international law, and LEARN TO PLAY WELL WITH OTHERS!
This is a long post for me: Like everyone on this blog, I’m guessing, I too had sex at seventeen. I waited to have sex until I had a job, because I did not want to have a child at that age, and knew if I did that I would have a termination. End of story. That’s my right, and it’s Bristol’s right to make up her own mind (if she is indeed allowed to do that, and this isn’t her mother’s decision). I’m always amazed that, when you look at the research, and see the protesters on the streets or on the internet, that the majority of anti choice protesters are MALE. Ok, boys, if every baby should be protected, I’ll pull out an ole Monty Python for you: Every Sperm Is Sacred! Stop Whacking Off! You are violating god’s law by committing the sin of onanism and are murdering unborn children every time you spank the monkey. So let’s pass a law making masturbation illegal for men only. What do you think?
I don’t mean to offend anyone or make light of it, but….

I don’t know about slap her. She was the victim here. But I certainly would have threatened to go public with it if my husband tried to run for office after doing that. Maybe it’s like Hillary said after Bill cheated… He made a terrible mistake but the bottom line is I love him. What ever her personal reason for keeping the affair quiet. She knew the dishonesty in him for a fact. She could have quietly said “I’ll go public”.
Personally, I dumped the idiot who cheated on me. And got GREAT satisfaction in telling him to take a hike when he tried to talk me into changing my mind.
I loved him. I just thought he’d take a mile if I gave an inch.

He cetainly is to blame for much of the Democratic battle. If he’d stayed out of the race I’m sure we’d have had a clear lead earlier. I’m plenty mad at her for that too.

Pro-choice means you have another option, not just one. If you “make” your child have an abortion, there is no choice. That makes you seem just as fanatical as the opposite end of the spectrum. I understand your point of view, and I am all for pro-choice, just not only your choice.
I, too, have a 17 year old. We remind him everyday that there are consequences to every action. In an instance such as this, f you don’t want to deal with teenage pregnancy or abortion, make sensible choices. Be responsible. Does he hear us, we certainly hope so, but…who knows? In the end, I’d not want to make anyone do something they really did not want to do. Despite the fact that parents are readily supplying their kids with birth control does not guarantee that they are using it all of the time.
Everything worked out for you, that’s great. Not everyone has that same story, and not everyone has to consider only one option, especially if they have the support…as does Palin’s daughter, in this case. There’s no need to justify your choice, after all, it is what it is…your choice.

I feel sorry for Mrs. Edwards, what with the incurable cancer, two young daughters at home and now the cheating scumbag of a husband. Tar has a point, though. If the affair had been exposed after he had won the pres. nomination or close to it, it would have severely damaged the Democrats chances of taking back the White House. She knew and understandably tried to keep it private, but many would have freaked out if this could have been prevented by someone in the know, anyone, wife included, and wasn’t. Wife and co-conspirator- damn the b******* for putting her in that position. I hear he’s still giving speeches at $65,00 a pop. What’s the topic, how to thoroughly humiliate the one who loves you? People say that cheating is a private matter even for politicians, but if your own wife can’t trust you, why should I. I would never do that to my wife, not for all the love and loyalty she’s shown me over the years. Character, morality, faithfulness aren’t just words, they cut to the very soul of the individual. You either have integrity or you don’t and if you don’t you have no right running for President. I’ll get off my soapbox now.

Stone - Your quite good on that soapbox. And I agree with everything you’ve said. I feel very deeply for the hurt that has been imposed upon her. It’s hard to hear that he’s making money from speeches. I wonder what kind of people pay to hear him? I wouldn’t get caught dead at any speech he made. Even if it were free.
Insomniac - Nobody LIKES to makes thier children do something the child doesn’t want to do. But it comes along with being a parent. Children don’t have the years of experience under thier belts to comprehend the full extent of the consequences of thier actions. If children knew what was best for themselves then why are parents held accountable for them until they turn 18?
BIG CLUE - because children DON’T know what’s best for them. They can talk themselves into thinking whatever’s on thier mind at the moment will work out picture perfect.
Are you sure you’re the parent? You sound more like a buddy.
By the way, every parent I’ve spoken to who had children before they were 18 has said they wish they had waited longer. EVERY one of them.

What’s done is done. I would not force a 17 y/o to have an abortion b/c I think it is in her best interest, nor would I insist on having the baby. It’s decision time for the 17 y/o. If they’re not ready to face the consequences, then they’re not ready to have sex. There is a consequence to having sex, and the 17 y/o had better know that he/she will be accountable and have to make adult decisions. Does your daughter know that if she gets pregnant, Mom is going to have her get an abortion? There’s her safety net…no accountability b/c Mom is on watch. What happens if she disagrees with you? Uh-oh.
Seriously, you’ve got to stop making judgments about people you don’t know. Sometimes, despite a parent’s best efforts, things work out differently. I think it’s in a teenager’s best interest not to have sex b/c that is the only 100% effective way to prevent teenage pregancy. But, that’s not reality. So, our message to our son: Be prepared, be informed and know that accountability awaits.
As a parent, it’s my job to guide my child. Sure, at times we’ve got to pull in the reins, but I’ve got to give him wings and let him make decisions, to form his own life. Now, don’t take these comments out of context. We don’t encourage dangerous, irresponsible or illegal behavior. He has goals and aspirations and a plan. Teenage pregancy does not fit into all of that. He knows it. But for all a parents does, you just don’t know what the kids will do when the time comes.
I certainly do think it’s a bad message to glamorize teenage pregancy, and every chance I get, I say so. However, it’s a choice, as is abortion. I don’t anyone who became a parent at 17. Everyone you know says that they wish they had waited, but do they regret their choice? In retrospect, would they turn back the clock and have chosen abortions over their children? Things are not so easily cut and dried as you make them out to be.
Oh, and although I’m certainly no expert on the law, I do believe that a child can be charged as an adult at 17 in the state of GA. Then, all a parent can do is foot the attorney’s bill.

Of course my daughter knows I would want her to terminate the unwanted pregnancy. She’s known since she was 12.
I promote children having a voice and an argument. That’s the best way for them to learn to control it. My daughter is quite capable of letting me know when she disagrees with me. This big scary spikey thing flies out of her mouth and LETS ME KNOW! 95% of her protests are because what she thinks is fair between her and her little brother differs from what I think is fair. (Big Surprise)
There’s some hypocracy in your statement about me not passing judgement on people. Clearly you’ve passed judgement on me.
And quite frankly - I’m the happy go lucky type and this has become a big YAWN for me. So unless you want to change the topic to skinny dipping while listening to Marvin Gaye on a transistor radio;
I’d rather scrub the kitchen floor.

A: Sarah Palin, her daughter Bristol, and John McCain.
Q: Name two hockey moms and a puck.
This just in: CNN just reported that the new addition to Sarah Palin’s family presented at the GOP convention was a substitute baby (for the cameras). The real baby didn’t look conservative enough.

The record has been skipping A LOT lately. The AJC techie needs to burp the baby and let the air out of the commment moderation tool, because it is mis behaving something fierce.
Lt. Rose? New post! I heard a veritable symphony of sirens on Saturday night…surely that means someone got up to some mayhem for you to blog about? If you are leaving it up to us to amuse ourselves…well, I reckon that’s trouble
