Some reports filed with Sandy Springs police:
Robbery
A man reported that around midnight on the 4th of July he was at the intersection of Mystic Place and Mystic Drive when he was approached by three men demanding his money. He said he kicked one of the subjects and then ran to his residence. The victim said that he had been drinking a bit earlier in the evening.
Burglary
Officers responded to a residential alarm just before 5 a.m. in the 500 block of Highbrook Drive and found someone attempted to enter the home through a window. Officers found fresh footprints under the window and signs that entry was attempted. The alarm scared the intruder off before actually getting in. The officer found that the burglar got into the victim’s car but did not take anything. (ALARMS WORK; USE THEM)
Security video showed a pickup truck pulled up to a business in the 6300 block of Roswell Road and three males got out and made entry into a vacant office next to the intended target. They smashed the alarm with a sledge hammer and took a 42-inch TV.
Someone entered a home in the 100 block of Mt. Paran Rd. either through an unlocked door or window at the rear of the home while the owner was gone. The house appeared ransacked. A pistol and some jewelry are missing.
Forgery, Fraud, and I.D. Theft
Someone used the victim’s information to open three credit cards. The victim’s bank notified her and she later told the officer she suspects a sister whose apartment she was recently kicked out of.
Thefts
A 76-year old woman reported that she gave the clerk of a convenience store on Northside Drive a $100 bill for some peanuts and ten-dollars of gas (1 pint) and the clerk gave her back only change for a $20 bill which he contends she gave him. She then refused to accept the change and then called the police.
The builder of a home in the 300 block of Heards Ferry Road said that sometime over the past 2-3 months, someone took about $15,000 in copper wiring from the house.
Assault
A woman reported that she was at a bus stop on Buford Highway when two men stopped in a Honda and spoke with her. She said that she needed to go to Douglasville. The men said they would take her there. (1st clue-that’s a long way at these gas prices.) She got in but soon noticed they were not headed to Douglasville. She told them to take her back at which time she was assaulted by the men. She grabbed the keys and fled to a house on West Northway Lane, followed by one of the men. The homeowner appeared and the men fled. The officer noted the victim was intoxicated. It is possible that the woman originally agreed to do something in exchange for the ride or money or whatever but she claims no agreement was made other than for beer.
Other Stuff An officer was called to the Morgan Falls Dam area and spoke to Duane and Dan. Seems Duane and Dan, whom we’ll call D and D, had a dispute going on over the following: Dan said Duane rammed his canoe and damaged it, his fishing rod, and a paddle. He added that he fell out of the canoe and “almost drowned.” Dan’s cellphone is also at the bottom of the river as a result. Duane on the other hand said Dan kept crossing over his fishing lines and then rammed his canoe into Duane’s John Boat and then hit him several times on the arm causing a laceration and dislocated fingers. That, according to Duane, is how the paddle was damaged. They were referred to another authority. Would that authority be? Could it be Montel, the DNR, River Keepers Mediation Club, Jerry Springer, Dagmar Midcap or Uncle Dewey, who is a 2007 graduate of the Roosevelt Institute of Verbal Judo?

Steve,
After your last installment there was much discussion on the blog about concealed gun carry. I recall a while back you spoke about a couple of instances where having a concealed weapon prevented you and your family from being a vicitm of crime (i.e. once in a parking deck in downtown). Would you please address the topic of concealed carry?
Are you for or against it? What is your opinion on the new concealed carry laws? For those of us who are not police officers, how can be protect ourselves on the street?
Thanks.

A good site to look up this law and the amendments is Lexis Nexis. Google it and then check the “16-Code” and put in “concealed weapon” in the search box. It has several sections but should note the changes. It is pretty obvious that lawmakers and the public in general realize that violent crimes are committed by armed criminals against mostly unarmed victims.
Ultimately i believe that we can’t ignore that people have a right to protect themselves and family in situations where a crime is committed. That’s why the ‘concealed license’ permit came to be years ago. Store owners and business people were getting robbed trying to deposit money and finally the new law gave the victim the right to have a gun in othe than a public gathering. That alone was still very structured so i think this is the ‘tweaking’ of the law and it recognizes that we do have rights to protect outselves. Unfortunately there is that ‘ten-percent’ catagory of humans who’ll screw up anything you put out there but overall I think it’s a good law.

These latest vignettes from the files reveal a small, but obnoxious population of people who have a complete lack of respect for the law.

Thanks Steve. One would think that by NOW you would know that Lexis Nexis is not exactly a site every Tom, Richard, And Harriet can access. I can get there, but most folks can’t.
How about next time you just tell Van to access the NSA’s data base, or tell him to access the Sandy Springs Police departments computer logs and give him your login. Or you COULD give us ALL you nexis lexis login.
Just damn. You must be a racist.

Oh, I almost forgot. Van? I don’t care what Steve (or you) think of the carry/conceal law or even the law itself. I’m a dumbass redneck who would rather be tried by 12 than buried by six.
Make your own choice when it comes to the safety of your loved ones. I have. But then I’m just a racist, not a know everything convicted felon like Stone.

Fred- Lt. Steve Rose is certainly not a racist. How you came up with him being a racist because he suggested someone use Lexis/Nexis is just beyond me. Perhaps you’re projecting. Why must you libel and malign people in order to make your point? (or is it that you have no point other than to disparage other people?) Crawl back under the rock you slithered out of and leave us out of the angry, hate filled world you so obviously live in. The Lt. rules!

If you go to http://www.georgia.gov and select “Government” and then “Laws and Regulations”, then “Laws of the State of Georgia”, it’ll take you to Lexis-Nexus. Select Title 16, then Chapter 11, Article 4. The provisions of Georgia’s carry laws start at 16-11-126 and go through 16-11-134 (16-11-120 through 16-11-125 relates to ownership/possession of machineguns, suppressors, explosives, and other weapons controlled by the National Firearms Act).

It’s all there “in plain english.” But, be aware that the changes that went into effect July 1, 2008 have not been incorporated yet.

Seems like everyone is figuring out that ol’ fred is just full of it. Some Hispanic dude called him a racist over a month ago and he is still stuck on it, just can’t let it go. He started calling the Hispanic dude a racist, then calling me a racist (and a felon) and now he’s calling the Lt., of all people, a racist, too. He even seems mad at poor Van for asking the Lt. a simple question and the Lt. for answering it. The confused little boy is immature, insecure and unbalanced. It’s time to ignore the pest for its obvious he’s just venting his hatred onto this post. I just can’t believe he called the Lt. a racist! That’s low for even him.
