Advice for a mega-million lottery winner

Finally—someone wins the lottery and did the right thing. Robert Harris, the winner, called his boss and quit his job! He’s selling the mobile home and—maybe buying a better mobile home. Who knows?

Winning $270 million is something that would make your day, wouldn’t it? What do you do right after you find out you won? Do you go to lunch or order out? I can’t imagine how many times this guy must be asking himself if this is real. I say “Good for him!” This is the guy you want to win—other than you, of course. You don’t want the guy who’s already rich to win. Somehow that’s bad.

How much of that money does he take home? Let’s see….$164 million before taxes I think it was. Take even half of that and he’s still styling at $82 million in the bank. I hope he doesn’t let that money ruin him. I’ve heard the horror stories about people who come into fast money and three years later they’re bankrupt.

Tonya, Robert’s wife, needs to keep an eye out on things after all this settles in. Learn from the past, Tonya. Don’t let Robert get involved with the following bad investments: • Car dealer selling exclusively to strippers • Strip club owned by strippers • Any non-profit organization called “Friends of Strippers • Restaurants run by strippers • Mortgage company dealing in creative loan options for strippers

It’s always the men who screw up good money things isn’t it? It’s true. Men screw up marriages, businesses, politics, and just about everything they’ve worked hard for, by not managing their raging libidos. We are a funny gender aren’t we?

7, 12, 13, 19, 22, plus the Mega Ball number 10 were the big numbers. They were based on his grandchildren’s birthdays. Robert and Tonya planned to have family members over Saturday night to celebrate. Oh, you can believe you’ll have family “dropping in” quite regularly in fact. You’ll see people who you have no clue who they are.

Tonya, do this: hire a bouncer up front and give him a list and pictures of who you like. Kick out the rest. They’re going to swarm your house like Girl Scouts on the first “Cookie Day.” Also, stay right up front near the bouncers so Roberts doesn’t accidentally let in a bunch of strippers.

When asked then how his life would change, Harris said: I used to live in a trailer. And I used to be an iron worker.” He said he couldn’t explain how he used his six grandchildren’s birthdays to pick the winning combination. “I’m too happy and confused right now to think too clear. Do you guys know any strippers?”

Well, all I have to say is “Good for you Robert and Tonya.” Enjoy the money but don’t let it change you too much. Remember the mistakes of past winners.

We don’t want to drive past Portal, GA and see “Clyde’s and Robert’s Market—Strippers welcomed.

I wouldn’t say they are “blessed” just yet. Sometimes winning the lottery is the worst thing that can happen to someone. I concur with the above, however: get a financial adviser STAT. Don’t try to handle this money on your own or you will screw it up. You just got the same amount a Britney Spears or Tom Cruise has in the bank except all at once. Don’t let it mess with your head.

Judging by the dumb actions these people have made already (e.g., making themselves known within 5 minutes of winning, attending TV shows and press conferences, etc), I am sure they will go through that money in a year’s time and be back in the trailer soon enough.

Geez Carbon Footpring, it doesn’t matter. You have an equally bad chance of winning either way. If you pick the same 6 numbers every time you have the SAME chance of winning as if you picked a different set of 6 each time. The computer option is just to get you out of their store a little faster. If you don’t understand what I just said, you have no business buying lottery tickets.

To Carbon Footprint who asked which method wins the most, either random picks or numbers picked by the player. Well according to Powerball their records indicate that 70% of winners win through random picks where they let the machine pick the numbers.

Alright Nimesh, your answer was even dumber than Carbon Footprint’s question. 70% is not an indicator of which method is better, but an indication of which method people use more often. More people use the computer method, so more people who win WILL HAVE USED the computer method. If no one used the computer method, the percentage of winners using the computer method would be 0%. Would that mean that picking your own numbers is better? Powerball’s making an *ss of you, and they laugh whenever they think of someone using that statistic.

Sad to say, based on the actions of the winners so far, their dumb as he!!, and the money will be gone in a few years. I wiuld never, ever, allow my name, face and any other info about me connected to a winning jackpot. They should have set up a trust, claimed the ticket in the name of the trust, hired a financial advisor, and kept quiet for as long as possible……………maybe plan to move far away from where they live now, and then tell the family. I’m sure they’ll bleed them dry………..gimme, gimme, gimme!!

i agree with One…I would throw my cell phone in the trash, leave my car in the driveway, get a hotel room and claim my winnings with a family member lacking no trust. PEACH - get over yourself and the Bible thumping garbage. It depends on your understanding of God. The lottery is also an opinion in regards to gambling. It really is not a loss as it can be claimned on your income taxes as an expense as well as the much of the proceeds help other areas such as education. The way I see it I am donating to charity and if God thinks i should be paid back by winning, then it is his work.

I hope and pray that this couple makes the right decisions about this newly gained money and the fame that will come with it. We have probably heard stories about lottery winners that went for broke within a few years. I hope they take some time to themselves and breathe, then they should sit down together and decide how to spend the money. I would see a trusted financial advisor ASAP. I hope they don’t make too many mistakes. I was shocked to hear the wife wanted a Mercedes. When people aren’t used to having money, sometimes they don’t make the wisest decisions. I wish them well.

The IRS gets 39% and the church gets 10%. I don’t know how state taxes figure in. First, you get an unlisted phone number, an accountant, and a half dozen assorted rifles and handguns. Then you go to voter registration and change to Republican. Then you pay off all your debts. Then you buy a red monster truck with UGA plates “270MIL”. Then you buy UGA football season tickets. Then you buy several bulldogs from Sonny Seiler. Then you buy the best land in Portal and build a mansion. Then you take a million dollars and set up a foundation where the kids who grew up in Portal and make good grades get a scholarship to UGA. Finally, put in your will that everyone who attends your funeral will be eligible for a random drawing of $20,000.

One has it right…..when I heard on Saturday that the winner had stepped forward my first thought was WTH!!!!

The lottery office is closed for the weekend, but he’s letting the cat out of the bag. I’m betting by Sunday evening he’d heard from every in-law, out-law, and ex-law, family, friend, ex-friend, and children he didn’t even know he had and every single one of them had a hard luck story or an idea for a “cain’t miss bizness”.

I think he’d have been better off if he had gone to the bank, rented a safe deposit box, stuck the ticket in there for safe keeping. Then use the next few months to find a good tax attorney, an estate planner, and accountant. Have them draw up a trust agreement. Then contact the FBI to find out how much it cost to buy my way into the witness protection program and “disappear” immediately after claiming the ticket.

Dear Lydia’s Dad,

You are an idiot with the most basic understanding of higher mathematics. Thank you for your input, as worthless as it was.

Statistically speaking, the larger majority of lottery winners have been quick picks: you do understand the difference between statistics and the opinion you pulled out of your dirty unwashed butt don’t you Lydia’s dad?

Lydia’s dad, by his responses, is apparently opposed to the lottery and like a typical baptist buttmunch seeks to ridicule that which he is “morally opposed to.”

He adopts a superior attitude which fails to mask his jealosy of the couple that won. Yo dude, I have talked with several PhD math dudes (well actually some dudettes as well) who have run the numbers and say there are actually numbers that get picked by the machine in a statistical manner higher than others. I know they don’t know as much as your arrogant rearend about math but they are confident of their results.

Just damn, what a butthead you are.

Well, they’ve already screwed up, as far as I can tell — I would NEVER have told ANYONE that I had won the lottery! I’d have called my estate lawyer to set up a trust and had the money claimed by the trust, with absolutely no way to trace it back to me.

You would avoid 90% of your future headaches, that way. My kids might have gotten suspicious when I finally bought a new sofa for the family room, but other than that — I’m a pretty happy camper already, and I’d have a lot of fun with the trust giving out scholarships to the daughter of a friend of mine whose family is having a hard time of it, financially, making an anonymous donation to the kid’s school, etc., etc. If my parents wanted to move to a retirement community, I’d tell ‘em “No problem, folks — I’ll cover the difference between the sale of your house and the community fees.”

Oh, and I’d get the bumper fixed on the minivan. :-)

Bless their hearts…these winners are interesting, to say the least.

In this day and age, why even announce that you’ve come into money?? They should have claimed the ticket in the name of the trust…hired a few advisors…and the husband should have taken a few days off from work.

I pray they don’t blow through the money, but the minute the wife said she wants a Mercedes…and they said they’d give the grandkids anything they want (and I saw the word Hummer)…shaking my head

If it were me, first thing I’d do is create a scholarship @ my church with the ten percent, clearly stipulating the way the funds can be used, I’d pay my debts off, give my mother and sister a cool million (and then tell them don’t ask for any more)…and bank the rest across a bunch of secure investments and live off the interest. I’d go to work the next day too like nothing was even wrong. I’m not paying for healthcare out of pocket!!

Well, some financial planner just hit the jackpot!!!

The couple did hire a “friend” who just happens to be a lawyer/financial planner.

This is an ideal client for any financial planner. Its simple:

  • Hold their money by gaining their trust. Tell them, “I’m holding it so you won’t spend it all. I’m looking out for you.”

  • Use their money in short term investments/CDs and collect dividends. Wait for significant return.

  • Cash in CDs and return the money.

  • Use money gained from interest to restart CDs and live off the interest.

  • This particular couple would never figure it out because they think nothing happened. After all, they did get all their money back. -wink, wink

    By Fred

    February 26, 2008 12:53 AM | Link to this

Well I didn’t goggle Jim Whittaker, but I googled him. Here’s what I found:

James W. Whittaker, also known as Jim Whittaker (born in Seattle, Washington on February 10, 1929 [1]) is an American mountaineer.

As a member of the American Mount Everest Expedition (AMEE) 1963 led by Norman Dyhrenfurth, he was the first American to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He summited on May 1, 1963 with the Sherpa Nawang Gombu (a nephew of Tenzing Norgay). They ran out of oxygen but managed to reach the summit. Once there, Whittaker planted a US flag at the top.[2]

He is the twin brother of Lou Whittaker, a mountain guide who is often mistakenly credited with that achievement.

Whittaker graduated from West Seattle High School and Seattle University.

He was the first full-time employee of Recreational Equipment Inc. and was the company’s CEO in the 1960s. Now, Whittaker is chairman of the Board of Magellan Navigation, a company that produces handheld global positioning system (GPS) units.

In 1965 he guided Robert Kennedy up the newly-named Mount Kennedy.

He led the 1990 Everest Peace Climb that brought together climbers from the United States, USSR and China. In addition to putting more than a dozen climbers on the summit, the expedition hauled off a large amount of trash left on the mountain by previous expeditions.

In 1999 Whitaker released his autobiography, A Life on the Edge: Memoirs of Everest and Beyond.

What the HELL does that have to do with the lottery? Here’s YOUR damn sign…………

    Well!

We all know about random equivalence. We all know about the 100% certainty of winning once you’ve won already.

The question is valid: If any number is as good as any other number, then the historical data about which method was used to pick the number, (computer or birthdays), is a valid criteria at the point of sale when the fat lady behind you is badgering you to hurry up so she can get her Benson and Hedges 100 lights.

Fact: If 70% of the peoples use the computer to pick, then that same 70% cannot be the 70% who won simply because each number has an equal chance to win. Thus the math looks like this: <=3

    moron.

Juding by the fact that they went and announced their winning the very next morning, their immediate plan to give family “anything they want” buy a big house and a mercedes, I am going to unfortunately have to bet they will got broke also after all the investor swindlers also get their hands on them. With that kind of win you should not come forward for a month or more until you have a good financial advisor, estate planner and set up trusts as needed. Stick the itcket in the bank till then. Really want to spend some up front? During that month set aside one set amount of “blow it money” and use that for the urgent emotional spending. But seeing as they already stayed at a high end hotel the night before claiming their ticket without a dime in their pocket, they are destined for the welfare line….that is the sad part.

You really need to seek out a therapist and get some help with your negative outlook. This couple should have kept their mouths shut until they were set. The bottom line here is they will probably clear $90 million after taxes. They can afford a Hummer, Mercedes and nice hotel. Think about it $90 million. I guarantee there is nobody on this blog that has had anywhere near that amount of money, nor will they ever. You all can say what you want, but I think their only mistake was to tell anyone, other than that they come from a small town and have expressed some family values such as their grandchildren. This is more than can be said of some other recent winners. Thank God they are citizens and AMERICAN

Listen, watching these people on The Today Show, I agree with Goddess. Perhaps Tonya and Robert were in shock, I don’t know. Very well could be that’s Robert’s regular effervescent personality. I don’t worry about them blowing all of the money. They are simple folk: can you just envision them in a villa in Capri or sailing on their yacht? Nah. Maybe Robert will get some teeth and buy a huge, Vegas-type trailer park to house the strippers. And a few distant cousins.

My husband and I have a theory that the million dollar house on Campground Road here in Cumming was built by some other bumpkin who won the lottery and couldn’t handle his money. They built a big fancy house and then couldn’t even finish off the landscaping. Now there is just a big For Sale sign in the yard. Wonder if he blew the rest on strippers…

Hello Friends, it is sickening the negatives vibs that most have left on this webpage. Can’t someone think differently; that despite the fact that this simple couple made the “mistake” of making themselves known, they can still make something out of the money and live a successful life. Come to think of it, they are just simple folk and need advice. They have never been part of the corporate world before nor the high live of Las Vegas to know that going national is going bankrupt. Give them a chance, expect them to do great, there is no absolute rule. Personally, I think the doom every jealous person is waiting to befall this couple will not come. The lottery winning numbers bore the birthdays of their grandkids who will live to enjoy that wealth, not the cell number of some stripper. Beware of jealousy and competition. No one has what you can’t have. The moment you start thinking that someone is in control of all the money and that you must fight to make your wealth, you get into the lack mentality, you become jealous and competitive and all this works against you. We are creative beings and can create wealth for ourselves either through the lottery or through some other venture. We are the highest form of creation and just with our mind can create wealth for ourselves because the abundance around us responds to our constant mental attitude. If you think there is scarcity and that you must insult and see as doom all the efforts of those enjoying some kind of wealth; you send out thoughts of lack and that becomes your reality. but if instead you think there is abundance, and make this your constant mental attitude, you will begin to attract all the wealth you need. It is not some wishful thinking, it is basic science. You are what your constantly think about. By the way, I am living proof of this: I have been a winner of a small lottery myself! not as big as our new celebrities but good enough to see me through two or three years of medical school. You do the math if the amount I won bothers you. :) God bless every man and woman with the will to win big someday. By the way, for those who have been believing in following notion, i want to set things straight: Money is not the root of evil, it is what the possessor does with the money that makes it evil. Money is at the root of every good, you don’t need a rocket scientist to prove this. Poverty does not serve God in any way, and he gets not pleasure keeping anyone in poverty. Get over it. The greatest creating tool has been given you by the creator and that is your mind and our free will. Use it! Peace to all!

    Hey Pasky,

A bit verbose but well intended. I myself was kinda p** at all the jealous crapheads that had nothing but negativity towards these “bumpkins”. They have not learned (the detractors, not the winners) that it is just money. I think these “simple bumpkins” will be just fine.

Moving on to more pressing poh-lice matters, I have a question or two for the Lt.

I don’t know whether it is a cult following or what, but in my area of the city there seem to be more and more people who choose to drive without their lights during hours of darkness. What’s up with this? Is it a global warming thing? Do they believe they are saving electricity and thereby reducing their carbon footprints? Are they banking carbon credits or are they just plain stupid?

On the other hand, you have those folks who have Xenon headlights who want you to notice they have such headlights, so they drive with them on bright. It’s like looking at the sun with your eyelids taped open.

I think it’s time for the gene pool to get a healthy dose of chlorine…

Why give the whole 270 million to one guy? Why not give one million to 270 guys?

It’s pathetic this “I won” mentality of human being losers. I’m number one. Me and only me, but dont worry, I’ll help people.

NO YOU WONT. You’ll blow it all.

We need to spread the wealth of lotteries. It would be just as sensational to award 270 people one mill. And it would make people think that they really did have a shot at winning, even though the truth is that you morons are all pathetic losers who aint gonna win SH!T.

SO go soak your greedy heads with your beady eyes and your seedy minds.

The only scratching you nerds need to do is on your groins.

    bwa ha

Duh, if I won the lottery I’d buy this and I’d do that, but of course I’ll invest some of it, and I’d set a limit to how much I’d blow at first and then I’d take the cash amount instead of the annuity, no wait, I dont know, I guess I’ll have to wipe my azz with the money.

    RETARDS!!!!!
