When police die, where are activists?

Today is one those days that I could do without. I got in the car and as I headed down the road, I heard the radio report where two police officers in DeKalb County were shot and killed this morning. I guess it’s a sharp reminder that no one is immune from all this crazy violence.

My first thought was how ironic it is that it happened in DeKalb County. I would guess those people who demanded all the investigations of police-related shootings and the police have a common bond now.

I wonder if they’ll show up, with their agenda-ridden activism, to support the families and fellow officers of these two officers.

I doubt it.

It’s yet another tragedy…and they occur so frequently we’ve become more or less immune to it.

To take a life wrongly is a terrible thing. My thoughts are with the officer’s families….

Our condolences to the families and fellow officers of the two Dekalb policemen.

If this town really wants to move past race being the #1 issue, the many good people of color in Atlanta need to take a stand against this long-term and now ubiquitous epidemic of black crime and fear among people still living and working here. Otherwise, it will never stop until no one is left inside 285 but criminals.

Ya’ll, the present situation isn’t cool or desirable. Take a stand for a better quality of life, so we can all live here in peace. Like President Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”.

We all know that the politicians are in it for their egos and their wallets, and nobody really believes they make a difference, anyway.

21st century Atlanta should be about basic decency and sensibility, and we’d all have better lives. Now that would be cool.

I know that crime is everywhere but when I moved into dekalb county in 1976 with my mom and dad. Went to snapfinger and towers, now the area has gotten so bad that its crazy. I hate for people to lose there lives. black on black crime is crazy. no one cares about life, no one wants to work anymore but no go out and rob black people. Its too late to act now. Why is this department more reactive than proactive. If Mr. CEO wants to be a senator get the hell out of the Maloof building and let someone build a better department that gives its officers what they need. This is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices we make for our families and the public. We are victimized by these cold blooded killers and the suits who sit behind a desk and dictate what is policing. You should be ashame.

You won’t see a response from DeKalb County citizens because they just don’t give a squat. If it wasn’t an officer they would be in an uproar wanting money for the victims, but since it’s an officer and they can’t reap anything from this, they sit quiet. Sad, but true.

I think the problem is lack of funding.

I am not a big fan of the CEO Vernon Jones, and I feel that he is a selfish and arrogant fool who only cares about himself.

I hope Lee Mays run for CEO of Dekalb Country because he have that sense of urgency and he have common sense of what the people needs in this county.

Several months ago one or more of the County Commissioners request funding for the Police Dept.

The behind the scene wheeling and dealings was just smoke and mirrors.

The Police Department should receive more $$$$ and more police needs to be hired. Heck if there are 500,000 people in DeKalb County whether they are residents or business owners they should pay a $10 Annual Police Fee, hello that would raise $50,000,000 million dollars to go toward DeKalb Police Department.

A stronger Police presence doesn’t always insure a crime wont happen but the response time will be quicker. The grid is big for DeKalb County as we cover a lot of area.

I wonder what the Police to Citizen ratio is in Deklab county. I have a feeling is it a small ratio. I thinking a 3 shifts fully staffed force is needed.

I really feel bad for the two officers whom where moonlighting but doing a honest job to keep people safe in an apartment complex. They didnt even get a chance to return fire and that is a tragedy.

People are so quick to blame the police for problems and I have said the following before: Are you the problem? If not then be the solution!

Activists like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can be thanked for this. Everything is a race issue with blacks because blacks can’t get out of the mindset of slavery. Blacks hate cops because some dead rappers out of California told them to hate cops. Face it, liberals coddle ignorance. If every law abiding citizen would carry a firearm then crime would go down. There is plenty of evidence to back this up.

Why do I have a feeling that any comment like the one posted by Deez would not be approved if the victims were african-americans shot by cops? e.g. these guys are probably drug dealers or gang member, so there is no reason to pitty them.

However, he posts something that is obviously inflammatory and it get’s approved TWICE.

I am a Dekalb citizen. It is very unfortunate for anyone to lose their lives. My prayers go out to the families of the slain officers. I think it is a shame that police officers must work 2nd jobs in order to have a decent quality of life. As a Dekalb citizen, I am on the defense based on some of the responses. My first issue is that crime happens in all counties. My second issue is that these murders are not about race. My 3rd concern is it does not matter if the community activists are not speaking up for the slain officers. We all choose our battles, if that is not their battle, so what. What are you standing up for? Or are you just sitting around in your little corner, with your judgemental selves. Stop judging our community and take a stand for something.

I’ve lived in that apartment complex in the early eighties and grew up in the area. This used to be a nice area, with a drive in movie theater. When the suspects are finally named, it will definitely show that they are not first time offenders.

They will both have long rap sheets full of assaults, gun offenses, and drug charges. Furthermore of the all crimes they have committed in the past, the overwhelmingly majority will be against the people in the community they come from, the same people who are ‘outraged’ by ‘police injustices’.

And when it comes to trial (I say ‘when’, in Alabama the word would be ‘if’) the community will be the ones defending the murders. To the community its an ‘us’ vs. ‘them’(law enforcement, gov’t, corporate enterprise) attitude. The perpetual ‘politically correct social justice outrage machine’ even sweeps up democrats at times, just look at Hillary Clintons race troubles. And the community buys it. Victims of crimes, Victims of activists. Victims are just easy targets.

You can win hearts and minds in al’Anbar province but you can’t win them in the black community.

Oh and Riley says stop snitching.

This is a sad day in DeKalb county. How many more people have to die before funding is approved for more police officers. We also need jobs for youth and adults. Too many people are turning to crime because they can’t feed their families. This is not a racial issue but a safety issue. This could have easily happened in North Dekalb.

Why is it that 2 white men have killed 2 white women this week and no headlines saying white on white crime. They are still looking for victims that Hilton killed in other states and still no mention about white on white crime. Not one politician is using that to gain votes for President the way that Bush used Willie Horton to gain votes while he was running for office. But the minute a black person kills another black person “oh my God it is Black on Black crime and it is horrible and they are the worst criminals. When that Asiain bot shot up the university no heard no media outlet say the men in the Asian community are violent. As far as the activists talking about the cops are killing too many of the crooks. White flight is a term for the demographic trend where working- and middle-class white people move away from increasingly racial-minority inner-city neighborhoods to white suburbs and exurbs. When blacks come in and white moved out, they come back and buy the properly for little or nothting and the houses double 200,000-300,00 the black cant afford to stay in and have to move .like east lake meadows, kirwood. Why do we tear down our neiborhoods with drugs, alcohol and dont keep our properly up. Crime come in the area we are to busy so there for we dont teach out kids. kids having kids on section 8 and it become a circle.

It is sad that these two police officers were murdered. I am not religious, so I can’t say my prayers go out to them. I hope their families are able to cope with the loss and things eventually get better for them. Let’s not forget that these officers CHOSE to become police officers though. It is part of their job. These things happen. What I don’t understand is why is it whenever a police officer is shot at, all of the cops are out for “vengence”. I am sorry, but that isn’t how I was brought up. It is wrong to act out vengence on anybody, deserving or not. Let’s say they go out to kill and you know they will kill whoever they suspect, if it is that person or not. As people have put it on here, if you aren’t part of the problem, then be part of the solution. Dangerous ideas, that are comunistic by nature. What a bunch of sheep. BAAAAHHH!!!!

The reason “activists” are not coming out is because it was police officers who were shot. Look at who usually comes out to protest. People like Al, Jesse and the Reverend Joesph Lowry. People like that make issues in to race issues even when race isn’t involved. There was no money for those guys to make from this murder. That is why there were no “activists.” We have corrupt politicians in Dekalb and Fulton County. Government makes EVERYTHING bad. Just wait until Hillary or Obama get your health care. Funding? Are you kidding me? Where has all the funding gone over the years? Politicians pockets. That’s where. Law abiding citizens should take up arms and defend themselves. Only then will crime go down. And, SHUT DOWN THE FREAKIN BORDER!!!!!

The fact is, two people were murdered, and screaming “race” doesn’t change that fact.

I’m rather sick of hearing that word - race - I don’t give a flying duck what color you are or how you got here, you live here now, as in you live in the U.S. - that makes you American. We all are born, eat, s** and die the same way, so what gives?

This whole issue is about some idiot who felt the need to shoot a cop. Color doesn’t into it - the idiot committed a crime, and needs to be punished. What’s wrong with you people?

It’s sad one of the residents said she “didn’t think anything of it. We always hear gunfire.” It’s also sad that everything that happens in Atlanta turns into a “black” and “white” thing. The problem is that Dekalb County is run by a bunch of folks who are so focused on their own personal gain, graft and power first that the running of the county has become secondary. And by the way, whites are not the only ones who flee areas like this. I know many black folks who have moved from crime ridden areas….it has nothing to do with color. It has to do with EDUCATION and CHARACTER. And the lady who said “stop the blogs” is right. This is just a pulpit for people who think they know the answers to the worlds problems.

Not ONE of you asked to be the color you are. You did not pick it; you just got born that way. Therefore it’s a moot point. Anyone who falls back on their color to explain behavior is nothing more than a lame person looking for an excuse. I can’t believe that anyone believes that someone robs a grocery store because they are black. I can’t believe that someone rips off peoples’ pensions because they are white. People do what they do because they make a choice to do right or wrong. All this talk of back and white and rich and poor is a crock. You either do the right thing or you do the wrong thing. Friendly-Fred, these are “fire” tactics. There’s no mention or indication of defending any group in any of the messages I posted. My message was simply that each individual person on the planet makes the conscious decision to either do 1) the right thing, or 2) the wrong thing in every single circumstance of their lives. Actually, I happen to be a direct decendant of slaves but I would NEVER consider that a good reason to murder a person or condone murdering anyone. You seem to be grasping at straws for the sake of fanning the fire. Tisk, tisk.

What the sad part about this whole incident is that the families will ot receive any pension from the Dekalb police department since they were “OFF-DUTY”. Deez,You are really an uneducated animal. I can’t call someone like you a human. You have the right to like or dislike police officers, but you don’t have the right to disrespect them and their families. You are the same person that calls the police to come assist you when your “babies daddy” has beat your a*. You are the same person that calls the police when one of your “drug dealing” friends kicks in your door and takes your drug money. You are the same person that calls the police when one of your many children was killed by a stray bullet because there was a gunfight in your neighborhood. You would raise hell with the police and contact the media, Jesse Jackson, and Al Sharpton if the police said ” it’s no big deal”.I am proud to say that I have been a police officer for 22 years and I work three jobs to support my family.I am probably safe in saying that you are unemployed, and live, and eat free off the government. So guess what? I am supporting you also! Don’t call us the next time you need help. Call your local “drug dealer.”

You know who I feel sorry for in all of this? The residents in that area! Dekalb County police will make it a point to harrass, shake down and possibly arrest every black male in that neighborhood and surrounding ones. They want a vengence arrest. Even if they dont find the culprits, I’m sure the police force will “choose” 2 innocent black males with a long record and somehow place the blame on them. It’s been done by police departments across the nation!

I moved here from NC(Fayetteville) in 1998. It was murders then. Is it my imagination that the last 5years have been off the chain with homcides daily? weekly? I am originally from Brooklyn, NY. Left when I was 18, 32yrs ago. It was bad thats why I left. Now there’s a joke. It appears that I have jumped out of the frying pan into the fire. And I may be Wrong. But since Katrina, added to all of the transplants(myself included)the crimes have increased. I own and raise german shepherds. I own a total of four. They cant stop a bullet but they damn sure let me know if anyone or Thing! is lurking around my property giving me a chance to either look out, get my own “peace maker”(as in gun) and call the Police. Folks no matter how bad they claim to be, think twice before even attempting to step foot on my property. Even the Jehovahs Witnesses “Walk On By” I guess they figure if I havent gotton the “Word” then I wont be getting it from them because they aint about to get eat up trying to ha ha “save my soul” as you guessed. My dogs arent friendly and Everyone is a suspect in their eyes. Also one last comment, why is it the “suppose to be” Good cops, get killed and the sorry azzed over ego inflated, drunk with Power b******* called police officers shyt talking, dirty cops Never get taken out. Infact they go on years living and making citizens lives miserable, even retire. but the Really good ones get killed? How odd. Reminds me of all the good men from Lincoln to John Kennedy to MLK jr. got assasinated, and all the sorry folks lived long lives and retired out of office. What a strange country we live in, indeed.

This is another example of senseless murders going on around the world today!! It has to STOP, and I don’t know what to make of it…when I was growing up, I was taught to respect the POLICE. These young people today don’t respect themselves, so how can we expect them to do so to the police. This is a sad world we live in, I would not bring life into to this world for any amount of money. These men died because of the hypocrisy of the drug laws.

The U.S. ships in the illegal drugs, sell it to the gangs, and incarcerated Black men for selling them . The act of using a drug for recreation is the same regardless of the drug. Using cigarettes, cocaine, alcohol, heroin, prescription drugs (not for medical reasons), and marijuana is the same. The reason for making some drugs illegal is so to have an excuse to incarcerate and exterminate a group of people. Mainly Blacks, Hispanics, The poor, and the mentally ill.

More cops will die for nothing until our drug laws are created and executed with fairness.

Friendly-fred - Jim Crow laws ended over 30 years ago. Blacks are the majority in the City of Atlanta and, indeed, they run the City and DeKalb County. Are you telling me you don’t think our people have the collective intelligence to know the difference between right and wrong? Just because I couldn’t use a white toilet doesn’t mean I sunk to the level of peeing in on the sidewalk. Just because I had to read disfigured used-up textbooks didn’t mean I couldn’t learn to read and think. Stop making our people victims. It’s pathetic to live off sympathy.

@ Pitifuk Rose, your first thought tells us all we need to know about you - instead of feeling grief and pity for the victims or anger for the perps you choose to politicize the deaths of two public servants who lost their lives trying to make your community safer for your sorry a$$ - the disproportionate number of police-related killings warrant investigation and these fallen heroes deserve praise and respect - if you’re looking for someone with an agenda, go find a mirror

I agree with you a 100% here!! I wonder what’s Steve’s real agenda here?!?!? Hmmmmmm……

If he was “really” concerned about these slain officers then he would have used his media platform (this blog) to show support to the families of these officers!

AJC is full of ____!!!

But I don’t expect any different from Mr. Rose after all he is apart of Sandy Springs Police….nuff said. He has too much time on his hands….proof is here he’s writing columns that ultimately solves NOTHING!!

Mr. Rose’s exact words are… “Pet peeves: I don’t like whining. There is a difference between addressing problems or discussing differences and whining. Whiners don’t offer a solution. Don’t whine.”

Ummmm Mr. Rose why didn’t you take your own advice when you chose to write this blog?!?! You didn’t provide a solution to this issue in DeKalb County…..you did the very same thing that you hate, which is “whine.” Now that’s ironic!!!

I grew up a few blocks from there, and my parents still live there. I remember when that corner had a Taco Bell, a Burger King, a shoe store, a KMart, etc… Now it has a check cashing place and a liquor store. My parents tried to order a pizza the other night, and were told that they won’t deliver to their street after dark. It’s absurd that people live in a neighborhood where a delivery person won’t even step foot. Do you see the picture of the cops standing in line, looking for evidence? Do you see the tiny little girl in pink watching them? She lives there EVERYDAY. When will people get p** off, and stop talking about race, and police brutality, and Vernon Jones - and start talking about what to do about it?

It’s so sad. It has turned into somewhere criminals go, and everyone else is scared, and the police are usually nowhere to be found. These cops were trying to make the neighborhood better, and were killed for their efforts. You guys talking about race should keep this in perspective.

Do all of you complainers vote? Do you do what you can, when you can? Do you voice your opinions somewhere it really matters, and not just on this board?

You talk about “the activists” and how they all just want money. Why don’t you go out and do something, instead of doing NOTHING?

By Howland Owl

The problem is two dead officers. The solution is not more money, the solution is not black vs white. Blacks and whites have been throwing rocks at each other for 40 years and more, and no good has come of it yet.

Reduce the criminal element and the criminal environment and a lot of these problems will go away.

More good cops, tougher judges.

This is so tragic, I no longer live in the area but I grew up in Dekalb, and I refuse to be numb aboutt he violence that has taken over the community. These were two young, black, fathers and public servants. They may very well have been a product of the neighborhood they were there to protect, a far cry from the negative stereotype of native male residents. Corruption is very obviously a part of the correctional system in Dekalb, but that stands as ABSOLUTELY NO justification to the brutality of what happened to these young officers. There are now four more fatherless youth in OUR community, because of OUR crimes against OUR very own. What a sad, sad day. I am certain that there is some upstanding citizen, in the Dekalb community, who is already pre-planning a fund to support the families at a local bank. Do not doubt that there are still members of the community who care, and are interested in change for the better. After all, these two officers lost there lives for that very reason!

If you have ever lost a family member, it’s very painful and there is no such thing as closure. Violence is a tool to destroy the black community (yes there are other cultures that commit crimes against it’s race) but non like our community. Stop focusing on crooked police and get your sh*t together and you don’t have to worry about run ins with them. Maybe it’s because I am a black woman, but I fear black violence more than I fear cops?

Bottom line is we are dealing with a bunch of cowards that probably have no home training and no respect for anyone probably not even there parents. Yes DP have done plenty of unnecessary shooting in 2007 however if you were brought up correctly yourselves than you know that 2 wrongs dont make a right…they took lives someones, son, husband or father and to me that is just one thing that you cant look back from. they are out there and I am sure someone knows who and where they are may the Lord have mercy on your souls…oh and by the way the cops get shot down from Buckhead to Bankhead so dont try to paint a picture of a beautiful atlanta on one side….Read the paper everyday…

I am very saddened by the lost of 2 heros. Those guys, like all police everywhere, chose a job to protect people they don’t know because of the compassion they have in their hearts. Lord knows it wasn’t for the money. Now two more are gone because they needed more money to take care of their families. I pray the Lord will bless their families and the families of those who are responsible for their deaths. The perp’s families are saddened today also because they have to live with the fact that someone they love committed such a horrible, horrible act and now they will be taken away from them as well as soon as they are caught. There are so many victims of this crime today. Let’s always remember that police have a very hard and dangerous job to do. Without them we would not be able to have the freedom to come and go and live in our homes in safety as we do. There would be more crime committed on us because noone would be there to stop or deter it. We should always say “Thank you” to our community servants for the jobs they do for us, be they police, fire fighters, peramedics, county workers or whom ever. They all do a job for us, good pay or not. God Bless each and every one of you today and always! MUCH LOVE!!!!

Policemen are granted extra power by the state. To quote from the Spiderman movie, “with great power comes great responsibility”. When police irresponsibly kill unarmed citizens, it is a gross abuse of power and deserves to be protested.

When citizens kill policemen, it is tragic and the criminals should be prosecuted obviously, but it is not a state-sponsored abuse of power. This is why the activists don’t come out protesting policemen. If the criminals in this case had killed two non-policemen there wouldn’t have been protests either.

The truth is, if there hadn’t been many documented instances of police unnecessarily killing unarmed civilians, activists wouldn’t have to protest them. This blog clearly reflects a biased point of view. The policemen in this case deserve all the respect and sympathy they will get, but this is not the same as a cop killing an unarmed citizen.

Steve, the editor, your premise is foolish at best. The activist when police are slained is justice. The perpetrators will be caught and punishment will be swift, double life, w/o parole. However, when cops kill innocent people, like they did in Atlanta with the elderly lady, there is a cover up. Rouge cops lie for each other, so an activist is needed. So, don’t ask where the activist are now, the slain officers have them, the D.A., the Chief of Police, Vernon Jones, etc. these are their activist.

Good day Pete! Did you do a Google search on how many are wrongfully incarcerated (some proven by DNA evidence)? Did you do a Google search on the sentencing laws that are more lenient on cocaine users (white) than crack (black)? Did you do a Google search on how many whites get a wrist slap for breaking into 150 cars and how these data could skew the inmate population in one direction?

By hotlanta - I am ROTFLMOAO when he said the suburbs are safe. The next time I hear about a mother having sex and marrying her son’s best friend friend I am gonna scream. Boy I tell ya 2 white men in a weeks time for murder and they still feel comfortable around each other. It never fails.

Yeah, he must be hitting the meth pretty hard. Wonder why they don’t call teachers sleeping with their students a “white” problem.

Oh, to be one of those perfect whites.

Hey now theres no need to shout there friendly-fred.

Why I may be pointless but there is certinally no need to call people names. Especially when I merely tried to answer a (baited) question that was being completly ignored.

While don’t think that was very friendly, I will agree that forums and random banter are very entertaining. You should try craiglist random rants if you like baseless idiots, or try wikipedia if you like to trap people with big words and self referencing evidence.

I must ask that you refrain from name calling. It just “sounds like you have a case of the Mondays” (psst fred, that is from one of those movies you don’t watch)

Don’t forget people, you can be sued for libel for blogging comments that aren’t true. Before you accuse anyone of corruption in print, you better be sure you can back it up!!!
