Straight poop on pants that droop

Atlanta City Councilman C.T. Martin has proposed a ban on sagging. Sagging pants give a provocative view of one’s boxers beneath —hopefully.

Legally, if there are no boxers underneath, they’re considered union plumbers.

This decision is not popular with most metro police departments. Since “sagging” became popular back in the late 80’s, the number of foot chases where the officer actually caught up with the sagging offender increased by 32.6%. You see, the officer has a built-in disadvantage. Radio, asp baton, gun, magazines, (we don’t call them clips), keys, handcuffs — sometimes two pairs depending on where you work, pocket change and so on make running a bit difficult, and a definite draw back as far as successfully catching the offender.

Thanks to the sagging phenomenon, most sagging offenders traveled only 20-30 feet before falling on their face. Life was good. The only problem for me was stopping. With all that equipment I sometimes overshot the sagger by 15 yards or more.

Sagging is a form of the verb to sag “to drop, to droop, to be moronic;” used as a substantiated adjective on Tuesdays only, it may mean: Sagging (fashion), a fashion trend for wearing pants below the waist to expose one’s awesome boxers, practiced by males who have issues.

How do you enforce it? Who’s going to put the tape measure there to measure the distance as to what violates the city ordinance? Just pull your pants up. It’s going to cost money to have all those “No Sagging” signs put up and the lawyers are going to get involved. And you’ll have after-hour clandestine sagging clubs and closet saggers and sagging-rights rallies …

Yeah, I can just see it now!! Cops with one more reason to profile young black men………even though there are plenty of young white men sagging too!! You best believe they (young white men) will get away with it (because their pants weren’t below the legal limit), while every young black man will be harassed or worse (no matter where their pants hang to). And mind you, I HATE seeing this on anyone……….it’s disgusting!!!!

As dumb as sagging is, you can’t ban it until you also ban camouflaged UGA baseball caps with a fishhook attached to the brim.

WTF - it’s not about harassing black men; it’s about being easier to catch criminals fleeing the scene.

There was a hysterical article in the Wall Street Journal a few months ago about this phenomena —- criminals unable to flee the police because they couldn’t keep their droopy pants up. I say let folks wear saggy pants, makes ‘em easier to nab.

I don’t care who you are white or black sagging pants look absolutely ridiculous!!! Why would you want to wear your clothes the same way they do in prison? Are you hoping to get there some day? The lower they sag in prison the easier the prisoner is to get. I say pull them up because you look like a moron. I wish I could see somebody running with sagging pants and watch them fall on their face. I would have a great laugh…

I say let them sag. In this era of the dow-low men, sagging make them easier to spot. What hetersexual man want his azz expose for other men to see. All they are doing is advertising their azz to other men.

As for the few stupid ones who are playing follow the trend, women should be able to realize up front that the man is a follower & could never lead. The media has focused basically on teen-agers but unfortunately there are plenty of grown men walking around sagging.

As usual one of first posters throws the “race card.” BTW, this particular article is about them being easier to catch b/c of their stupid saggy pants, not about color. I am getting so sick of the race card in Atlanta! Keep throwing it, and it will just fall on deaf ears, no one will take you seriously, and your credibility is shot.

Also, I have seen all kinds of different people wearing that crap, not just African Americans. I say let them wear ‘em it is entertainment for the rest of us!

Yes. It is amazing. A police officer comes out against this ordinance and someone still throws out the race card against police. I think we could come out and say police won’t stop black people anymore for any reason and someone would still throw out that good old race card. I think it is required in today’s society.

Realize this………noone has to throw the race card……….it is already there!!!! And if you believe it isn’t…………you’re in denial!! But of course, some people have never had to deal with this, so they think it’s all made up! Enough said!

You know what…… if ‘sagging’ is their cup of tea, which seems to ‘be’ mainly the black young males from what I’ve personally seen which is what I can only go by….I’m sure some other white/asian/hispanic kids also ‘sag’…I just don’t happen to see any of those…..doens’t matter what race you are…and you can say what you want to…go look on the street corners……. Go do a study and see what you come up with……it makes them look utterly STUPID…no matter who is doing it.. so be it. If they want to be personified as weak underlings…prison clothing from what I hear….their choice.

But the clothes make the man…… Obviously… they make themselves into something they want to be… AND RACIAL PROFILING????? PUHLEEEEESSSSEEE!!!! If you fit the profile I guess you ‘are’ the profile!

so throw the RACE CARD if you like…but it IS WHAT IT IS!!!!!!

I’m so sick of the race card!!!!

there are greater issues to deal with in this world and in atlanta than baggy jeans or a bra strap showing. i think people need to get a grip and focus and real issues that need immediate resolve. if you ban sagging jeans, ban tight one too, cause I don’t need to see the imprint of your crotch. and ban jeans that are flooding. i’m not intereseted in your ankles. i guess next they’ll be trying to tell us what kind of shoes we can and can’t no wear. this is stupid…the cops need to fight real crime…

Sagging!?! What about the MUCH more pressing matter of really fat women wearing bikinis. Seriously, since when did it become ok for women of AAALLLLLLLL sizes to wear bikinis at public pools, water parks, and beaches. shudder The HORRORS I have seen this summer.

I would much rather see someone in baggy pants than a fat woman pretty much nakid.

Ok, in all seriousness now, it is not ok to regulate “sagging”. For those thinking that race dosen’t play into this you need to reconsider. This is going the wrong way and will just futher racial profiling and will disadvantage young black males.

This is just the old “razzle dazzle”. Politicians like to put things like this out there to distract us from the real issues.

What is amazing is that the trend has been around so long. Although I am not sure of its origin, if nothing else it seems outdated. Someone needs to originate a new trend!! Forget passing a law or ordinance. Unconstitutional and will lead to time and energy consuming legal battles. There are far too many serious issues including crime, to focus on pants. Also, if I am ticketed for my bra strap peeking out in this heat, I am liable to end up in jail. That said, why can’t we see a blog on something a bit more important? I am tired of talking about low-riding pants and another professional athlete gone bad. Ho hum. I am thrilled that San Fran passed a law banning plastic shopping bags. Let’s talk about that. I am going to find out how they did it. There is just no need for this petroleum based blight that does not biodegrade, when there are paper, and even better….reusable cloth alternatives. Lets take care of our home planet.

If someone wants to wear their clothes like an idiot, let them.

This entire discussion makes no sense to me. This blog today is purely a race-baiting topic.

Kids are going to do what kids do. Anybody remember the dumb things they did when you were young?

That being said… If you’re an adult and you still haven’t learned where to purchase a belt and what it’s purpose is then you probably aren’t reading blogs on the internet. In fact, I doubt anyone would show up to work looking like that. If one of my employees showed up “saggin” they would immediately be sent home and possibly written up or even fired.

Life is tough. Work sucks. Get over it.

You will be judged on your appearance… period.

Grow up and pull your pants up.

Its not a race thing, even some white girls wear saggy pants. It’s a SAGGY PANTS thing… but anyway, i dont like seeing anyones sponge bob boxers either, but you know what if they start banning saggy pants, WHATS NEXT??? no cleavage for women? No flip flops? No t-shirts after dark? all skin covered? It’s ridiculous! What ever happened to our rights? LAND OF THE FREE, right? Are we going to change it to “THE LAND OF THE FREE as long as you follow our dress code… AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE” ???

At the end of the day, the guys wandering around the mall holding their pants up are the ones looking stupid, let them look stupid if thats what they want to do.

But aren’t city councilmen supposted to be worrying about important things? Not baggy pants? Can they fix some pot holes, figure out a way to reduce crime, fund better education, sort out the health system. What is this state coming to?!?!?

How does Atlanta actually function? If these message boards represent even a small fraction of how Atlantan’s think, we have a huge problem. And how stupid is it to continue whining about a racial problem in a city and do nothing about it. If you honestly believe every single police officer in Atlanta is out to arrest black males for no reason and the legislative branch in Ga is only creating laws to make it easier to arrest black males, then move to a new city or do something about it or shutup.

Seen it a million times. I worked as an SRO for years and it works “beautifully” in a pursuit.

I saw a clip where an officer was chasing a man that was “sagging” and the man went to climb over a fence. His pants and underwear got caught on the top and flipped him upside down. The cop had to lean against the fence, regain his composure, and then assist the male in getting off the fence.

I agree with the account that “sagging” knows no color. As far as a law, I’m against people who make a law for everything. The gov’t needs to stay away from my clothes, my bedroom, and my head.

I agree there shouldn’t be a law against it…people should be free to wear what they want, when they want. That said, I have always said that this trend reminds me of toddlers wearing overloaded diapers, that cause their britches to sag. Always wondered if this trend wasn’t one of those that reminded these ‘poor’ kids of their babyhood. And as an older woman, I miss seeing tight buns on guys. And it is strange isn’t it, that the trend for the women of the saggy pants group is tighter is righter even if you overflow everywhere? I truly think we should ignore both…..enforce the rule of dress in schools and the work place, yes, but otherwise, let it play itself out. Soorner or later, they’ll figure it out for themselves.

Wow, you people are all so funny. This is just some stupid fashion statement that young people are making.

I am not young and I have never sagged, but I do remember all of the horrible fashions that have run their course in this country. Cuffed Jeans, Bell bottoms, Hoodies, Thin Ties and sport coats, Platform shoes, Tight Jordach Jeans, Parachute Pants etc…

It is nothing personal if we don’t understand why, it is just this generation’s fashion mistake so that when they get older they can look back with embarrassment and say, “Wow, I can’t believe I was into that!!!”

If it helps police catch fashionable criminals, that is just an added bonus.

People, listen up. My husband is a black male who works in the federal penitentiary as a corrections officer. Has been there for 24 years and almost ready to retire. That sagging and bagging look came from the prison. It was started by inmates. It came onto the streets by inmates that were released. Then the rappers picked up the style because let’s face it, alot of rappers have been to prison. I detest the look. It is ignorant and it shows parents don’t have control of their children. I have an 8 year old daughter and 3 year old son. Let her try to bring some guy into my house with sagging pants. And if I every catch my son wearing them I will staple his pants to his waist…trust me when I say this. My husband won’t even allow the sons of people who come to visit into the house with baggy pants. He said he doesn’t want to see anyone’s underwear except mine and his. Enough said. The whole shabang is just plain ignorance.

The day I found out about this stupid law I was standing at the register at Best Buy when this 35 or older man approached the next register with his darn shorts WAY under his behind. AND he had a belt on. He looked at me with a smile as if I were supposed to be attracted to him. I can’t even remember his face but lordy I remember those shorts and his boxers and that stupid belt. He had to reach really really low behind him to get his wallet. Now this fool should be slapped by his mom! LOL.

Race card - I am black. Unfortunately, I see mainly black men with their darn pants and shorts way below their butt. It is such a turn-off! And I don’t mean the young men - I’m not looking at them) but the OLDER MEN (of any color) should grow up and keep those pants on their waist! I live in Jackson County (Farm Land) and NO ONE shows their underpants unless they are a plummer!!! Even then they have the decency to only show their butt crack. LOL.

I’d like to get rid of all of the darn low-riser pants! I have a rather large behind and for the life of me I can’t find pants that fit me well. No, I am not fat. I just have a big butt. There are no pants that fit me well! NOT EVEN APPLE BOTTOMS because of the stupid low-rise crap! If I wear them, my butt crack would show! LOL. It isn’t fair! :o)

I’ve been trying to find a link to an article I read online, but I can’t find it. It was about how African Americans are the only culture that’s ever sought to emulate & elevate the lifestyle of those in the lowest social class. I was expecting him to pull up his pants and try, but he just gave up and started walking instead - Guess it would not have looked too cool to ride a bike unless his crack was showing - It was sad, but like a car wreck, I just couldn’t look away!

This so called STYLE is straight out of jail starting around 20+ yrs ago (eventually the hip-hop industry adopted it when gangsta rap started)It’s a style that inmates started using so they could tell who was “ready & willing” to do certain things if you know what I mean. It makes things “easier” to hide from the guards. They’re not allowed belts in jail. So whenever I see one of these men walking down the street like this, I dont take a 2nd look, because it’s possible they may not be interested in women.

    Mike and Atlanta Pearl Girl:

There are lots of non-criminals who wear their pants in this silly manner. It’s wrong to profile them based on what they wear. It would be just as bad as profiling all people with body piercings or tattoos. Besides, there are plenty of criminals wearing three piece suits. :o)

I’ve read the article on the web and I happen to agree with the ban on the droopy pants. Who wants to see someone elses booty or their butt crack.. It’s gross and sick to look at. It’s not even a dress code, its just a fade. Hopfully the public wakes up soon.

Saggin started in prison. Prison rapes victims were told if didn’t want to get beat up and raped again to wear their pants down low. That would let other prisoners know they would not fight back if wanted to have anal sex with them

I am so happy that white people don’t take up each other just because we share the same skin tone. WTF, true freedom comes only when you break the chains that bind you to the person standing next to you. Think independently and you’ll do so much better in life. FYI: I see white and Asian kids saggin’ all the time.

By Bring Back Short-Shorts For Men!

    August 24, 2007 1:36 PM | Link to this

I am single-handedly trying to bring back the shorts of my youth. Yes, I am talking about short-shorts for men. I believe they began to die out about the time Magnum, PI series ended and JAMS® began to take hold of the clothing market. If you look back at the length of JAMS back then [which was radically long at the time] and what every man wears nowadays, you will see that men’s shorts are the male equivalent of a burqa.

I understand a lot of huys may not have the goods to fill out a pair of shorts properly, but look at women who wear tight shirts who may not be as equal of proportion as the next woman. You just have to accept that everyone is different. If it really kills you, then you can use the foil-wrapped cucumber method used by Derek in ‘This Is Spoinal Tap’. Otherwise, if you have it let the world enjoy.

Anyway, men’s dress styles have become dramatically conservative and smothering. Why do we expect to see women show some skin and not return the favor? The baggy pant trend seems to be radically conservative from my point of view and must be incredibly hot. Buy apair of Speedo’s or vintage Hobie® 3” trunks c. 1976 and wear them around the house. In no time you will start to see what I am trying to accomplish.

Perhaps someone can explain to me the difference between seeing someone’s boxer shorts and seeing, say…cycling shorts or basketball shorts.

I see people wearing both of these on a regular basis, and they are at least as revealing, if not moreso, than partially exposed boxer shorts. Both cling tightly to the buttocks. Both, at least on men, leave very little doubt about one’s religion. Heck - going “commando” in thin jeans or shorts is FAR more revealing than this “sagging” trend.

So…there’s definitely something more going on here than just the distaste some of your are claiming. Whether it’s what you think the style represents, or the race card as some claim, few of you are being intellectually honest here.

Break out the burqas, people - the American Taliban is on the warpath again.

I have come dangerously close to killing people at times who walk around like moving shadows at night and give an incredulous look when I have to slam on my brakes to avoid mowing over them.

Take a cue from cyclists and joggers, wear something reflective and or brightly colored. Better still, walk on the sidewalk instead of the middle of the road.

Is this what our elected officials do on a daily basis? Make up stupid ordinaces about fashion. Isn’t this still America? Do we not have the right to wear what we want, when we want? Is this honestly how we want the police to spend their shifts? Instead of catching “real criminals” thay spend their time being the fashion police. If this gang problem- address the gangs. If this is about drug dealers- address the drug dealers. But this seemslike a deliberate attempt to bring down the hip hop culture. That is where this fad started. It derived from prision attire but hip hop made it fashionable. People feel like this is a race issue because everyone knows that hip hop is synomonous with Blacks.

Long story short………… We have the right to look stupid if you want. If you don’t like the way I look……..STOP LOOKING!

Saggin’ is far from cool. You know what would be really funny? What if child molesters were known for wearing sagging pants? Guess the style would change! What if being a thug involved dressing like a clown complete with make-up? Thugs would do it. Idiots. I’m sick of hearing about it. Yes it profiles people. But a wise boss of mine once said “it is what it is”. I constantly worried about what’s under the 5XL t-shirt on the 105 pound thug. Is that one of his 6 cell phones (cause he’s a baller) or is it a pistol or knife? Why do so many of these thugs HAVE to act suspicious. Why not just live and be happy. I don’t care what kind of respect you think I’m going to give will do for your life. I would ignore you completely in life if you didn’t stink or were standing so close to me in line at the store or atm that you should take me to dinner first.
Want to know why I’m moving NORTH (GA)? To get away from the ignorance, bling, waste, chewin’, welfare, rims, thugs, a$$-backwards thinking of Atlanta. Vick kills dogs and the NAACP pulls the race card. That’s ignorance at it’s best. A human killed a canine. Is that better for you morons out there???? Where’s the ACLU to protect the NAACP? Morons.
It is what it is people. Until certain parts of society get their acts together and stop the “bucket of crabs” action going on in their circles, they’ll never get anywhere nor will we get rid of “differences”.

You can also use saggy pants as impromptu ankle chains. I went to a domestic once where I arrested a teenager. He resisted on the way out to the car. Another officer and I took him to the ground, and we caught the pants with our boots, and pushed them down to his ankles to keep him from running or kicking. It worked long enough for us to get some real ankle chains on him.

I don’t think it’s the kids wearing the low riding pants that are the problem, it’s all the ignorant people that want a law passed for every thing they do not approve of. Grow up people, you are supposedly adults. Do you need government to hold your hand and manage everything you can and cannot do by creating a law. If it is not hurting you, why would you want the government to step in and pass a law. What happens when they decide you can no longer wear anything with blue or white in it because it is too bright and may be too excitable and causeviolence. Should they pass a law for that too? Let’s pick our battles and ask ourselves, will it really hurt me or my family!

The “sagging” trend reportedly started in men’s prisons where gay men exposed their buttocks as an advertisement that they wanted sex from other inmates. Why this trend spread outside the prisons among heterosexual men is proof that we definately need better role models. Anyone who tries to “play the race card” on this issue is correct. This was started by African-Americans and spread in their culture by rappers and others. Many people have more taste than to look like gay men in prison, many do not. It is simple…. this was started by blacks, promoted by blacks, and has spread to whites, latinos, and others who choose to be “wiggers”. If the children and adults that are “sagging” had a more positive self image, they would not have to be followers of these sad trends, trying to be part of the crowd… they would be proud to stand as individuals with lives of purpose. To pass another law that cannot be enforced is ridiculous. For black leaders and others to promote good taste in their culture makes sense. Talk it up Atlanta…. tell these young people how trashy they look, how others don’t want to see their pants belted under their buttocks held up by their “package”, and ask these men if they are actually advertising for gay sex. What message are they trying to send by “sagging?” I think a law should be passed requiring each home to “have a mirror” so no one walks out of their house looking like gay prisoners. If they cannot afford a mirror, then they can apply for a voucher to be given a free mirror by the government.

Anyone notice the connection between the saggin’ supporters and their spelling and grammar?

A Councilman, not a police officer, introduced this. And, he is black - oh NO!

Anybody else interested in investing in a belt company if this law is passed?
