We’ve got our first arrest

As you might have guessed or saw on television, the Sandy Springs Police Department is up and running. As a result, we’re generating reports like we did in North Fulton.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

We’ll phase in about 70 programs and grow from there. We have ordered signs and when they arrive, we’ll phase in new programs and get them transitioned to Sandy Springs from the Fulton systems. Phased in means we can’t get everyone in at once. We have the list of programs. For the record, River Chase was selected as the first NW program for the city. We’ll start there and get everyone on board as soon as possible. If you’re interested in NW, send an e-mail and I’ll send information to you.

AND NOW THE ANSWER YOU’VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR…

The first arrest was officially logged in at 0005 hours July 1. A 35-year old man was arrested at 5700 Roswell Road and charged with criminal trespass. The officer making the arrest, a former Fulton County officer, knew the man and knew that the man was involved in drugs and that he had been given several criminal trespass warnings. The man had a glass pipe commonly used for smoking crack-cocaine. The suspect will forever be the know as No. 1. Congratulations. We wish him well.

Also, note that those physically arrested are taken to the Roswell jail. Sandy Springs has a contract with Roswell on customer accommodations.

Today’s summary:

Finishing second not good enough

Officers on Dunwoody Place arrested a 21-year old driver who came out of the Azalea Park Apartments in a tan Ford Explorer. He almost hit the police car. The car weaved in and out of traffic before pulling into a convenience store. The driver got out and ran when he saw the police car and officer.

The suspect finished second and was taken into custody. The car did not belong to him but the owner, who was called, said the driver didn’t steal it. The driver didn’t have a license. The officer noted a beer was found spilled in the front seat. The driver was taken to Roswell jail.

It affects your memory

An officer saw a car whose driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. He stopped the car on Roswell Road and noted the smell of marijuana. The officer said he saw the driver move his hands down between the seat and the door. The driver was checked for weapons. A bag of pot was in his pocket. He told the officer he forgot the weed was in his pocket.

Crackdown

Officers arrested a 34-year old man after he was seen standing in the parking lot of a service station on Dunwoody Place drinking beer. The man, who said he was homeless, was arrested and taken to jail. You can’t stand out on the city streets drinking alcoholic beverages. This area is also a known drug activity area. It’s getting a lot of attention. Look for this to continue until we get rid of this drug activity.

Ahhhh….the old “wasn’t wearing a seatbelt” trick. Just another way for police officers to legally discriminate when “choosing” who to pull over.

But hey, at least they don’t pull you over anymore for a non-working brake light, and then break it…

I lived in SS a few years back in the Huntcliff Village apts, which is near the Dunwoody Place gas/conv store of which you speak. I often used the car wash next to that store and would have people wander over offering to sell drugs. Once I even had the same guy ask me TWICE, once while I washed, once while I dryed my car, not realizing I was the same guy. I think he was eating/smoking too much of his own profits. I hope you wipe all these idiots out of Sandy Springs.

What happened at the Wachovia at Dunwoody Place and Roswell Road today? Was there a robbery?

The biggest shock I got when I moved here from south Louisiana was that it is ILLEGAL to drink in public. That you could get arrested for walking down the street drinking a beer was the most unbelievable thing ever. The second most unbelievable thing was that I couldn’t buy booze on Sunday and when I could buy it, I had to go to a special store and not just pick up a bottle of Jack at Albertson’s on my way home from Mass….

We sure could use a new police force like yours down here in SW Ga. Albany seems to be lacking when it comes to enforcement. Continue to kick a## and keep the badies off the street. Who knows, maybe us hicks down here may someday visit your fair city. The column is a hoot down here, south of Atlanta, where life is slower and the crooks are too.

Jennifer, you very much come across as a Katrina refugee. Planning to stay?

There was a very homely lady in a blonde wig that tried to hold up the Dunwoody Place Wachovia bank on the 3rd… I was sitting at Quizno’s watching the whole thing. I even got to see Lt Rose roll up in his slickback crusier! It was better than TV— Not bad for a Monday afternoon lunch hour! Good Work SSPD!

Why not pull over a school bus for passengers not wearing seatbelts? This law is meant soley as a prfit geberator and has nothing to do with public safety. Keep up the good work/

Working people have nothing to gain from this. From what if seen so far the police in sandy springs have not done anything of use.

I recently had to relocate to a new city, but enjoy “dropping by” the old hometown newspaper, and Good Officer Rose’s column. AND! Guess What! We can buy alcohol on Sunday here! After I finished dusting the floor with my chin, I of course, bought a bottle of wine. On Sunday.

of course them floods in Louisiana and now here… well, hum.

I guess we are just headed there in a handbasket…

I was on 285 on the 4th, and I think every SS police officer was, too. It is too bad they couldn’t be patrolling the streets instead of raking in money by giving out speeding tickets.

Wouldn’t a better strategy have been for those officers to have been driving 55 mph on 285 and slowing all the traffic through SS, instead of writing tickets? Oh that’s right - no police officer knows how ro actually drive the speed limit. ;)

Hey Jennifer

Why don’t you go back to south Louisiana. You can’t and never have been able to buy alcohol on Sunday in the state of GA

I have to say this as it just jumps out at me: You all need to quit using “SS”. Do you know what that stands for to most people? If you don’t, do a Google search for “SS” and look at what the first result is.

Dear Oberver…to most people I know ‘SS’ means Short Stop. At least this is how it is abreviated on most baseball cards, baseball programs and bating lists. It is also the first part of the name of every Steam Ship. I’ve also seen it on a number of cars (Camaro SS)..where it means Super Sport. Quit seeing offense where there is none.

That’s OK Jennifer. There are only 13 states (and D.C.) left that ban off-premise liquor sales all day on Sunday. There’s hope yet. And if you absolutely, positively, have to have it, Tennessee is just a stone’s throw away!

Social Security? Secretary of State? If you’re talking about that World War II-era thing, man, you are OLD. Hope you’re getting your SS checks.
