Who will be first to throw up in one of our cars?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Birth of a police department, update:
Friday was a long day. The boss and other city officials were in court on the temporary injunction to keep the bars open until 4 a.m. Apparently they did not grant it so the bars, at least as of right now, they are going to have to close at 2 a.m.
FYI, clubs: We are going to check it really close so you guys need to get your stories straight a little earlier tonight. It will be mandatory for all DJ’s and house bands to play “Desperado” no later than 1:35 a.m. Good luck.
6:45 p.m. Friday
I did two interviews in the parking lot. The cameramen took video of cars, rode around the block in the cars and then videoed the cars again — sort of a before and after? I talked to the reporters and told them that we’re ready to go and looking forward to finally getting out there.
The start-up has been brutal. We have literally been getting the final sets of uniforms and re-fits in today. Most of the details have worked out. Some of the hats don’t fit. Small problem compared to what else could have gone wrong. We tested the car radios.
Everything is up and online now.
Like you, the burning question remains in my mind: Who will be the first drunk guy arrested? Will he run? If so, will he run in a big circle? Will he throw up in the back of the police car? Those cars are really nice.

Hey Steve: First of all, good luck to each of you and BE SAFE. As for the drunks, how about “barf bags” like planes have. They might not get used, but then again - maybe. Can’t hurt!

I’m in the third safest town in the country ( Amherst, NY ) and we leave our doors open, keys in the car and lunch money on the kitchen table. Hope your town can match that ! Be safe out there ! Whitey Nichols

If he throws up, maybe he can get what they give the pukers back in MD, community service cleaning up the cars… Always something fun to do after you’re done in court.

CONGRATULATIONS Steve. You never did mention if you received your allotment of one bullet. I’m curious to know about that. I’m going to make sure that whenever I am in Sandy Springs to be law abiding because I don’t think the line, Hey I read Steve Rose’s column will get me off receiving a ticket. Definitely let us know when SSPD arrests their first criminal. That will be so much fun!

Congratulations LT Rose! I only wish I could have been there for the midnight parade of sorts. May God bless the entire Sandy Springs Police Department and especially offer His protection to each and every patrol officer in the line of duty on the streets. Here’s to a new chapter of history in the greater Atlanta area (a positive one I might add)!
I am assuming your officers don’t have radar guns, because speeding on Roswell Road in Sandy Springs is about as likely as landing a 737 on the Lenox mall parking lot!

Um, did anyone else notice that every single officer in that photo on the front page is a white male? Who the hell is doing the hiring??????

Glad you are up and running. We are looking forward to having more police on the streets of Sandy Springs. Please report when the first ticket is issued and the first drunk arrested. Hope the cars remain clean for a while!

Lt. Steve, quite a display at the drive-out last night. I would imagine all those blue lights put a bit of a scare into more than a few folks along Roswell Road! Good luck and “Let’s be careful out there!”.

Wait a minute. My uncle was a Sandy Springs Police Officer back in the late 60’s. When did they stop having a Sandy Springs PD?

To JustMe…
I’m sure you are also extremely concerned about the lack of white representation in Fulton County. Puh-leeze. Jessie Jackasson is a callin’ sista!

Having a drunk trying to sell a Buick in the back of the squad is an everyday thing just about.
The fun is, who will be the first one to try to break a window out… (Please note the protective bars do look great… buuuut… they don’t always work…)
And of course there is the back window… and that is such a pain to replace… Just remember to have big trash can… the back window makes lot of itty bitty glass particles.
