Turkey Day: Let Others Do The Heavy Lifting
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
When I observe a holiday, my oven gets the same consideration. No workin’? No cookin’.
Lately, Thanksgiving Day dinner has come courtesy of my neighborhood supermarkets. This time, I’m relying on Publix, whose meals start at $43.99. Kroger, my occasional choice in previous years, beats Publix’ lowest price by four bucks.
(Why did Mr. Cheapskatin’ opt for the costlier package? Good question. Publix is more convenient, and it offers a turkey-breast-only entree for us white-meat lovers.)
It’s not too late to place an order. The chains are closed on Thursday but usually keep regular hours on Thanksgiving Eve, when most customers fetch their meals.
Have you gone the grocery store route on Turkey Day? Is it worth giving the oven a rest?
One other option I’ve tapped before is Boston Market. Its dishes are pricier, with this year’s entry point at $52.99. But my taste buds tell me they are slightly more appealing. Outlets are open on Thursday morning for pick-ups, which suggests to me the grub might be fresher.
Have you found other take-home alternatives to the supermarkets?
For me on T-Day, a pre-cooked bird is the word.

Good Lord, no way!! I want all my best traditional dishes cooked in my own kitchen. I can’t even imagine buying pre-cooked food, not to mention the outrageous price for the convenience.

I like to know what is in my food I serve to family and friends. Do you have any idea how much salt is in the Publix dishes? What about MSG and other junk? No Thanks, I will stick with quality ingredients that I know and trust to make my Thanksgiving meal special for the people I love.

You might as well by a frozen dinner and throw it in the oven. There is no way I would eat store bought crap on a day like Thanksgiving. I cook too darn good for that to happen!

This is why I got a wife. She takes care of all of the feast so I can kick back and watch a couple of games and get drunk.

There’s your consensus Cheapster. We do a potluck where my mother in law does the birds and several side dishes and other family contributes their side.

Here we’re going to bypass Thanksgiving this year. We’ll spend the day at home, off the roads.
In the past ,we’ve gone out to dine on Thanksgiving, but getting home through all the cops can be a hassle.Neither of us drink,so we shouldn’t have any problem, but why take a chance?
Would I buy a ready to eat supermarket Thanksgiving dinner? Are you kidding me?
