From The Clothes Horse’s Mouth
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The chill in the air means it’s time to start clothes-shopping for … next spring and summer?
Yes, much like buying holiday decorations the week after Christmas, the time to refresh your wardrobe is two or three seasons ahead.
I acquire many of my duds at Macy’s. Normally, their selections are overpriced. Patience pays off when their stores unload out-of-season apparel, often reduced by 40 percent or more. I often cut costs further, up to 15 percent, by using a Macy’s credit card.
If you’re the type who requires the most up-to-date styles, this strategy isn’t for you. Macy’s works for me because they sell nice clothes that are not all necessarily in uo-to-the-moment vogue.
What stores work for you with “clearance” attire?
One other thing about Macy’s: The clothing choices vary from store to store. For example, there is a much wider (and hipper) range at the Lenox Mall location than at North DeKalb Mall. Check out their website for a list of brands, but call ahead to confirm an individual store carries them.
What are your tips for saving on clothes? Meantime, I feel a cold spell coming on. So I’m outa here … to go buy some shorts and T-shirts.

Kohl’s is having great sales right now. I got a sundress for next summer for $8.00 when it was originally $60. Had to hold myself back though and not buy anymore, because I hope to shed some pounds by next summer, and didn’t want to buy any shorts that will hopefully be too big by then =). But if your weight doesn’t fluctuate then head on over…

Ross, Marshalls, & TJ Maxx is where I get most of my clothes. I cant tell you the last time i’ve shopped in the mall!! People think I spend tons of $$ on my clothes. I even have a friend who shops the same way, but she buys most of her stuff at cosignment shops & Goodwill. Name brand stuff for less than $5!! You cant beat that!!

I tell my family that when the price of gas goes up, retail must come down. Retail is marked up so high and is very depreciative. It’s just not worth full price anymore. I buy at end of season or at off season. My fav stores are Saks, JCrew and Michael Kors at any dept store. Saks has their twice yearly blow out sale and the others mark down so quickly, that what you want will be on sale when it is needed. Keep your eye on a sweater or coat now and hold off buying until you need it as it will be on sale by then. I have some charcoal colored cords bought at JCrew at end of last season for cheap and can’t wait to soon wear. I also have a few cute summer blouses that I just bought, wore a few times and will put away for next summer. I like things around 75% off and quality. TJMaxx and Marshalls always seem to also come thru on everything from clothes to home decor. Consignment stores lately have been too expensive as their used price is not that far off of the aggressive mark downs the retailers are now doing.

I shop at NY&Co. I only shop there when they have a sale and I have a coupon. Their coupons are usually “Get $25 off when you spend $75” or “$50 off when you spend $150”. That is on top of the sale prices. I can usually get two or three pants and two or three shirts and a belt for about $100. I love that store!

I got a new Gimp outfit at Leatherman for only $250.00. It came with one dozen red rubber balls.

For my 2yo, i will go to Kohl’s now and buy his summer clothes. In Feb/Mar, I will pick up his PJ’s off the clearance rack (PJ’s for kids are so expensive) and any other outfits.
For myself, I also go to Macy’s around this time to get next spring/summer clothes. Dillards also works.
For my 16 y.o. we will shop beginning the 2nd week of January. Christmas mark downs have taken place and everyone is making room for spring/summer.
For the 8 y.o., this is a little harder. I shop all year round watching for sales b/c she grows fast, then slow, then fast again (2 sizes this summer vs. the same size last school year).

I usually wait and look around for sales. The Talbotts outlet store in gwinnett had an awesome sale about two weeks ago. I bought two $88 dollar jackets for $15 each! Express, and Ny & Co. also has some really good sales once in a while, i subscribe to their email lists so that i’ll know when they have coupons and discounts.

I’m not sure as if this store is still open, cause I currently don’t live in metro Atlanta, but if you really have a thing for name brand clothes, there’s a store near Mall of GA called Norstom Rack, they would sell $160 Lucky brand jeans for >$20. Granted its no Ross or Goodies, but for those of you must havers it was a great place to shop.

Unfortunately by the time sales come around my size is sold out. I buy some work things at New York & Co. b/c it’s affordable and looks ok. I have to grab things when I see my size. Even if it’s not on sale, I don’t shop that often and wear things for years so I get my money’s worth. Occasionally I find things at Marshall’s & TJ Maxx. Sometimes I luck out at Kohl’s if I hit it just when they have a new shipment. Macy’s is way too big and confusing for me and rarely has my size.

I see where my store Macy’s (and perhaps others) are promoting a Columbus Day sale. You clothes shoppers: Is this an especially good weekend to restock your closets?

A lot of people — my wife comes to mind — have no patience. I go and look often at stores and wait for sales. I also don’t have to be the first one to have the latest fashion. Off-season sales are great. I also love Marshall’s, T.J. Maxx. But the Value Village stores are the greatest things going. Yes, there is a lot of crap there. But if you look and have patience, you can find great name brands and some times, they have hardly been worn. I have a practically brand new Versace shirt from there. I find Brooks Brothers shirts, Jos. A Banks suits and other fine stuff. I almost passed on a 100 percent cashmere coat because they wanted $40 for it. But I waited until the half off day on the final Wednesday of every month and went back and got it. My brother told me I was fool to pass on it in the first place. I’ve seen similar jackets priced at $2,000 or more in men’s magazine. If you know fabrics, design, cut, drape, etc. and you spend your time looking for slightly worn stuff, Value Village is great. I drive my wife crazy because I have like 25 sports coats from there!
