HD DVD vs. Blu-ray: The battle begins
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The next generation of home entertainment software hits the market this month as HD DVD players and discs hit retail shelves.
Two months later, rival Blu-ray will make a claim to the same market. (Read the story here)
But with dueling formats bound to confuse consumers, will anyone bite? With DVDs already offering excellent picture and sound quality, is there a place for these formats?
Will PlayStation 3 make a difference for Blu-ray? Will Microsoft’s support prove a boon to HD DVD?

Gear.IGN.com actually did a good writeup on the problems with both HD DVD and Blu-ray. Both are very consumer unfriendly.

If this turns into Beta v. VHS, the best thing smart consumers can do is wait. Have patience. Let the early adopters/marketplace/whatever decide the war.

Once the Playstation 3 hits the market the infrastructure for Blu-ray will be established. The players from various manufacturers are very expensive. The wise thing to do is to get the Playstation 3 for a few hundred bucks vs. at least a grand.
For more info on BRD check out: www.blu-ray.com
I think HD-DVD will fall the way of DVD-Audio, Sony Minidisc and Panasonics Digital Compact Cassette. All of these were good technologies at that time.
If you notice how cheap recordable DVDs are, it goes to show the new technology is going to be adapted very soon. Most of the media manufacturers are already making BRDs.

I think I will start shopping for an upconverting DVD while waiting for the HD/BluRay dust to settle.

I reckon HD-DVD will probably win. First of all it is heaps cheaper and is a recognised name. The first Blu-ray players will also only be able to read single layer discs which hold 25gig and the First HD-DVD players will be able to read dual layered discs which can hold 15gig on each layer totalling 30gig

Cypress, you’re wrong. All Blu-ray players are required to read single- and dual-layer discs.
