apple

Apple just threw down the gauntlet for digital home entertainment. Here at the company’s HQ here in Cupertino, Calif. Steve Jobs just showed off a new Mac Mini computer that’s designed as a digital media hub - something other PC makers have been pushing for years with limited success. Apple’s new machine lets you wirelessly access movies, music, photos, etc. stored on computers throughout your house - in the home office, the kid’s bedroom, etc. - and play it on your home stereo, home TV or iPod. Oh, and of course the new Intel-powered machines also will play DVDs, Cds.

Jobs also just showed off the new iPod Hi-Fi, a home stereo systems designed specifically for iPods. “It’s really home stereo reinvented,” he said.

Steve’s still on stage. More to come.

Does some bigshot at the AJC have stock in Apple or something? It seems that every time I turn around, there’s a blog started on an Apple product. Who gives a $#!% about a company that holds less than 10% of the PC/multimedia market.

Brett, you’re right they probably only hold 10% to 15% of the multimedia market, but the products they are producing are changing the market forever. They will before long be the big dog on the block, especially if they keep introducing products like the new Mac Mini computer.

People care because Apple is so secretive with their product launches and are also lauded for their great product design (something that dell, for example, lacks). Also, Apple may not have a huge market share for personal computers, but they are the only major player in portable entertainment. It’s basically Apple, and then the rest. In terms of the products, I’m a little disappointed. The mini update looks promising, especially if you’re in the market for a new desktop. But the Hi-Fi stereo seems unecessary.

Apple matters because where they innovate, others imitate. They are one of the few truly visionary companies in the business.

Plus, remember that there are thousands of computer and related hardware manufacturers on the market, and Apple is one of the largest single companies. A company that sells millions of computers per year with only three desktop lines and two laptop lines, controls its own operating system, plus who has sold more than ten million expensive iPods is doing something right. Market share is less meaningful here.

Mercedes only has 5% of the automobile share, but they make a great product.

Same concept. Apple makes great products. The iPod just gave them the money they need to push and advertise more than ever before. If they were as affordable as PCs Microsoft would be in trouble.

I personally don’t see how Apple is still in business. I can only assume that the i-pod is their only life line. Please!!! Personally, I rank i-pods right up there with Bluetooth headsets - they make the users look incredibly stupid! But I digress. I work in a particular sales field, and I honestly can not think any of my clients using an Apple system. Why??? Because they are not practical!

Apple IS the BMW or Mercedes of computer makers, if you can afford it, YOU SHOULD GET IT.

No reputable designer, graphic artist or advertising professional would be caught dead working on a PC. They’re simply not built for the dense files required to edit video & compose graphic-intensive layouts. That’s the main difference.

It should shock no one that a salesman has no experience with, or clients who use, a Mac.

I say let’s keep it that way.
