If Florida wins, can SEC claim to be best conference?

Miami Gardens, Fla.—It’s getting close to kickoff and I am set up in the press box at Dolphin Stadium and ready to blog with you during the BCS championship game between No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Florida.

On the way down here I stopped off at a television studio and did a segment about the game for the NFL Network. The host, Paul Burmeister, asked me an interesting question: Does the winner of this national championship game get to claim that its conference is the best in college football?

Early in this season it became pretty evident that the SEC was not going to have a vintage year. Tennessee, Auburn, and LSU were all going to be down. Mississippi State, which won eight games last season, was struggling. Georgia, rated preseason No. 1, did not live up to expectations.

The Big 12, meanwhile, was scoring points in record numbers and had the best group of quarterbacks in the country. For several weeks the Big 12 game of the week was must-see TV. ESPN’s College Game Day set up permanent residence there. By the end of the season it was pretty much a given that the Big 12 was superior to the SEC.

But if Florida, the SEC champion, beats Oklahoma, the Big 12 champion, tonight does that perception change? Ole Miss beat Texas Tech, another high scoring team, pretty handily in the Cotton Bowl. In the only other SEC-Big 12 matchup of this season, Texas beat a very bad Arkansas team.

That would give the SEC three straight national championships and salvage what has been a tough year for the league, relative to what was expected in preseason. Remember that a lot of folks had four SEC teams ranked in the Top 10 in preseason, and that didn’t even count Alabama.

So I put it to you as we get a little closer to kickoff? If Florida, the SEC’s best, beats Oklahoma, the Big 12’s best, does the SEC still get to call itself the best conference in college football?

SEC WILL ALWAYS BE THE TOP CONFERENCE-BEST PLAYERS-BEST COACHES-BIGGEST STADIUMS-PRETTIEST GIRLS-3 NC IN A ROW-THAT COULD BE A NCAA RECORD-GA AND ALABAMA SHOULD GET IN THE PICTURE THE NEXT FIVE YEARS-SEC WILL CLOSE THE DECADE WITH TOTAL DOMINATION AND WILL WIN 2 OF 3 NC TO OPEN THE NEW DECADE.

Alabama REALLY hurt our claim. Ole Miss beating Tech speaks volumes. I am torn. I think it will be decided by how dominant UF can be tonight. If they win by more than 2 TDs then the SEC is the best. If not, I would go with the Big 12 based on having 2 dominant teams like OU and Texas. It was interesting to watch Texas try to move the ball on OSU monday. I have a feeling OU is going to have a rough time moving the ball against UF. UF can get negative plays on OU, which they haven’t seen from a D this year. Also, no one even comes close to UF on special teams. Could be a gamebreaker for UF.

Once again, if Alabama had taken care of business and UF wins tonight, it wouldn’t have been close.

Mikey- The Pac-10 sucks! Not even close from top to bottom to the SEC and Big 12.

As a longtime dawg I despise Urban and Spurrier’s boy “Stoopsie” as he calls him! Pulling for either is like pulling for Satan or Satan’s right hand man. With that said, Florida will kill Oklahoma and their so called high scoring offense. Oklahoma has not seen anything near what Florida brings to the table. Florida will beat Oklahoma handily—Count on it! Florida is the best team in the country this year, and we have to tip our hats to them until we beat them!

Good God! Who the crap cares about the best conference??? What ever happened to the best TEAM??? Arguing for or rooting for conference members is FREAKING PATHETIC!!!!! You should HATE the other teams in your conference, but everyone in the SEC is inbred b/c they all think they are some sort of brotherhood. Real sports fans root for THEIR TEAM AND NO ONE ELSE!

I think the SEC and it’s bowl record will speak for itself. 6 of 8 not counting tonight, Unless Gators bus breaks down in that traffic jam you spoke about the SEC record should be 7 of 9. Gators were embarrassed last year by Michigan in a bowl game, It won’t happen this year Tony. May change my mind in the A.M. but i’ll have to have proof first.

If you bandy about the idea of best conference you have to look at the WHOLE conference, from top to bottom. The SEC was top heavy and that’s even a stretch what with Bama and UGa being overrated. Ole Miss is a decent ball club but the rest…puh-leeeze.

Tony-the way i see things playing out the next 5 yrs will be much of the same.I see Southen Cal to continue to dominate the PAC 1 but look for UCLA to challenge in around 3 yrs.Texas will continue to dominate the Big 12 with Oklahoma winning it about every 3 yrs.I dont know why OK-TX are both in the Big 12 south that side will dominate for yrs to come.look for FSU to start flexing its muscles the next 5 yrs in the ACC winning 3 times.Miami will probably have the best athletes but coaching is lacking.Big 10 will have Ohio ST win 10 or 11 games and get to the BCS only to have some SEC or BIG 12 waiting to stomp on them.Mtn W will have a Utah or Boise St every other year but will never win it until sos gets much stronger.Notre Dame will win 8 or even 9 games but playing Big 10 teams and naval academies and getting drilled by southern cal by 4 or 5 TDS will barely keep you in the top 20.Big East see Big Ten.SEC will enjoy a very dominating 5-10 years winning 6 more NC in this span.FLA,GA,LSU,ALA will lead the way Tenn and Auburn have some major rebuilding Ole Miss will suprise people once or twice a year and could even win 10 games one year.SC will become frustrated winning 7 or 8 games and Spurrier will retire in 2 years.Go Gators thats very hard to say.

Hot rumor circulating around the stadium that Percy Harvin tweaked his ankle again. Just saw him take the field a few minutes ago and he looks fine.

There are 10 former Heisman Trophy winners in the house including Tony Dorsett and Doug Flutie. They are going to honored on the field later tonight.

The SEC the best? Uh…Utah, the true national champions of 2008-9, beat the Tide like they were a tidal pool…on the SEC’s home field of the Sugah Bowl.

The SEC has two good teams (Alabama and Florida), two fair teams (Georgia and Mississippi) and the rest of the conference couldn’t win the MAC. I love SEC football, but it’s not as strong as everyone claims. It’s one team stronger than the ACC, it’s about even with the Big 12 and even with the PAC 10.

Tony,

I don’t think that one game is indicative of the Conference but you have to admit that the SEC is doing something right to have 3 teams representing the conference for the past 3 years.

I soooooo envy you for having the inside knowledge and tickets to the game.

My take on the game will come down to who makes the fewest mistakes and takes care of the ball. Both Defenses should be jacked up for this.

Even though I’m a UGA Alum my prediction: FLA 42 - OK 41 should be an instant classic.

OK by (8) points !!!!!!! Tebow is an awesoe QB, but he wont be enough vs. OK. OK will pick at least 2 INTs.

The fact that Tony Brain-fart picked Florida is my sure-fire indicator that OK is gonna win. I’ll put his Florida pick right up there with his other outstanding predictions this year, like UGA beating Bama, and UGA stomping Florida. Good ones Tony. And his pick that UGA will beat GT. ROTFLMAO.

The funniest thing of all will be all the UGA folks making themselves sick having to cheer for UF and Tebow.

Talked to Terry Donahue, the former UCLA coach today. He told me that he thought Florida had the best defense, but that he expected the Oklahoma defense to play with a lot of energy tonight because they have been told for a month how bad they are.

Someone talked about mistakes being the key to the game. Remember that these are the top two teams in the country when it comes to avoiding turnovers. Oklahoma leads the nation with only nine turnovers the entire season! Florida is No. 2 nationally with only 11 turnovers in 13 games. If one of these teams forces three turnovers, that team will win.

Oklahoma won the toss and they elected to take the ball instead of defer to the second half.

That tells you that they think this will be a high scoring game and want every possession they can get. Sitting next to Blair Kerkoff of the Kansas City Star. Said that most of the Big 12 teams take the ball if they win the toss.

Bradford got sacked by Florida’s Brandon Hicks to stop Oklahoma’s first drive. Only the seventh time all season that Bradford has been sacked.

Florida safety Major Wright put a major league hit on an Oklahoma receiver. Those kind of hits get the Florida defense jacked up. Remember the hit that Brandon Spikes put on Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno in Jacksonville? That set the tone for the entire game.

Defensive stops should be hard to come by in the game. Florida now has one.

Tony, If Utah is not awarded a piece of the NC, wouldn’t that be admitting to all the kids that play in a non-BCS league that NO MATTER WHAT THEY DO, they still cannot be the national champions? I know they are not in a BCS conference, but they played a quality schedule (4 top 25 teams) and the beat Bama, who whipped us Dawgs at home. Those kids deserve it.

First quarter ends 0-0. Who thought THAT was going to happen. This is a good drive by the Florida offense. They are stretching the Oklahoma defense horizontally, leaving room for the tight end, Aaron Hernandez, to make plays. The Florida offense just seems different when Harvin is on the field because the defense has to account for him on every single play.

But there is no grind like the SEC…or maybe the Big 12. So are only 24 teams eligable to win the national championship? What are those other guys playing for? Why was USC’s early loss to a team that almost won the PAC-10 more costly than Florida’s early lost to Ole Miss? And was Oklahoma’s overall “grind” tougher than Texas’?

Tebow scrambles and finds Louis Murphy for a 20-yard touchdown. Oklahoma benched screamed that it should have been a fumble or that he was stopped at the half-yard line. Ground cannot cause a fumble. Looked like the ball crossed the plane of the goal line before it hit the ground.

Good drive of 86 yards on 12 plays. Mixed plays well and gave Oklahoma defense a lot to think about.

That didn’t take long. Oklahoma just used that big offensive line to just run the ball down Florida’s throat. But here is the question I have. It only took Oklahoma two minutes to score. Their defense has not had a lot of rest since giving up a 12-play drive to Florida. Is the OU defense ready to play again?

BTW, this is the first time all season that Oklahoma has not scored first in a game. Tweleve times this season they led 7-0. The other time they led 3-0.

the reason these two teams are in the championship game is because the pollsters realize that the SEC and Big 12 are the toughest…If Utah were from one of the six and undefeated then they would be playing tonight…its easy to get up for two or three big games a year but playin six to eight good to great teams is a lot tougher…love to see Tewbo throw picks!!

Florida’s offense is not looking as dominate as it has, recently, against other strong defenses (e.g., I thought they were brilliant in the Bama match-up). Wonder if it is rustiness from the month-long layoff, awkwardness surrounding the Mullen situation, or OKLA simply getting the job done?

Amazing. Oklahoma had the ball on the Florida six-yard line and went for the touchdown with 10 seconds left. The ball was batted by cornerback Joe Haden and intercepted by Major Wright.

So in Oklahoma’s last two possessions of the half, the Sooners got to the Florida one-yard line and six-yard line and came away with no points.

Florida has held the Oklahoma offense, which averaged 54 points per game this season, to only seven points.

Now Florida gets the ball to open the second half. I have to believe that Oklahoma’s offense is starting to get frustrated.

I have to wonder about some of Stoops’ decision making in the red zone. Going for it on fourth down after being stopped three times inside the ten, and going back to the run, seems questionable to me. Take the three Coach. Then with only seconds left, 12 I believe, OU uses it’s final timeout, effectively taking the three pointer out of consideration. Why not spike the ball, Coach? You only have time for a couple of plays anyway. BTW, be sure not to throw the ball short with no timeouts! OU should have had at least a 6 point lead at halftime.

Florida drives 75 yards for a touchdown to go up 14-7. Tim Tebow ran for 49 of those yards. He had carries of 12, 4, 15, 12, and 6 yards. He picked up a crucial first down when he ran for 12 yards on third down. He is starting to take control of the game. The drive when 13 plays for 75 yards.

Oklahoma reaches Florida 28 yard line where the Sooners had a third and one. Oklahoma gets thrown for a four-yard loss and a 49-yard field goal gets blocked. It is the ninth kick the Gators have blocked all season. Oklahoma can not score when it gets into Florida territory.

Remember that Oklahoma reached the Florida one and the Florida six and did not score. If Oklahoma loses this game it will be about missed opportunities for what is supposed to be the best offense in the nation.

But Oklahoma has not faced a defense all season with his much speed.

By Tony Barnhart

Florida couldn’t do anything with the possession after blocking the field goal. The third quarter comes an end with Florida leading 14-7.

Remember that Florida is No. 4 in the nation in scoring defense giving up 12.8 points per game and Oklahoma is No. 1 in scoring wtih 54 points per game. Can Oklahoma get two scores in the final 15 minutes to win this game?

The attendance was just announced at 78,468. That’s the largest crowd ever at Dolphin Stadium for a football game.

It was Bradford’s 50th touchdown pass of the season.

What in the world is going to happen in the next 12:13?

Percy Harvin’s 52-yard run gives Florida a golden scoring chance. The Gators get to the 10-yard line but have to settle for a 27-yard field goal.

Harvin got his ankle twisted during the drive but got up and ran off the field under his own power. Will he be back when the Gators get the ball again.

It sure seems like the Florida defense has been on the field a lot tonight. Are they going to get tired in the final minutes. With 10:45 left, you have to figure Oklahoma will get two more possesions. Can Florida hold the nation’s best offense two more times?

Tony, How can the SEC claim to be the best if they only won 40% of their games against teams from Automatic Qualifier Conferences?

40% is pathetic.

The SEC can schedule 72% home games; 21% games against FCS teams; 48% games vs. Non-AQ teams; and win, win, win. But when the SEC plays fellow AQ teams, they are very poor.

Oklahoma drove to the Florida 50-yard line when Bradford went deep down the middle. Florida’s Ahmad black made a great interception, his seventh of the season to stop the drive.

This is one of the best games a Florida defense has played in a long time.

Hold it I just read that comment and realized you are a uga fan…..its ok hold on to the past 45-42 is the only numbers that matter currently. Next year it wont be nearly as close…as the jackets make it two in a row over UGA.

By Tony Barnhart

January 8, 2009 11:37 PM | Link to this

Just like the did in the SEC championship game, Tim Tebow put this team on his back and took them down the field for a touchdown with the game on the line.

Florida drove 76 yards and took almost seven minutes off the clock. Tebow made another of his big time throws to David Nelson for 29 yards down to the Oklahoma 20-yard line. Tebow then capped off the drive with a four-yard pass to Nelson for the touchdown which gave Florid a 24-14 lead and probably puts this game away.

Florida looks like it is going to win its second national championship in three years. And the SEC will win its third straight national title…..

By GT student

Also oklahoma put up a far better fight than UGA did against UF. Just hold on to that lol….cause 95 percent of the offense is gone….just imagine next year.

Florida’s defense makes yet another stop on fourth down with 2:26 left. Florida is going to win the national championship and give the SEC its third straight college football title.

Question: Does Utah get any love from the AP poll?

I’m going down to the field for interviews. Will come back and file a completely new blog in a little while.

Thanks for joining me. It was fun…

Top to bottom, the SEC was NOT the best conference this season. The SEC had two of the best teams in the nation, but let’s face it… The SEC is a down conference if you drop below UGA in teams. Big 12, ACC are stronger all around this season, but the SEC did have the best team.

The SEC wins another one, three in a row! Congrats to Atlanta Gator and all other classy Gator blogers. There is no doubt that the SEC is the strongest Conference, six of seven in bowl games, and Ole Miss’s beatdown of Texas Tech just prove it. By DBCOOPER

When your considered as having a down year and you win 10 games speaks volumes as to where your program is, and where your conference is. An Ole Miss team beats the National Champions and Texas Tech but loses to Vanderbilt. To me says something too. All the teams can beat you on any given Saturday. National interest on the SEC is real despite the crying wannabe’s. I live in Seattle and they envy everything about our winning attitudes and fan involvement. There is nothing that compares to Southern College Football. The MWC without Utah playing will put you to sleep WHO CARES! 30,000 seat stadiums? Come on. ACC Championship? To remind you, you said that UF wouldn’t be able to pass, and OU would be able to focus on the run. Tebow passed decently well, and UF had TWO guys rush for over 100 yards. If that’s the best OU could do against the run while “focusing on the run”, then Big-12 defenses are even worse than we ever suspected.

Admittedly it’s been a while since I’ve had to test how I would react to a UGA National Championship, but I’m not so old that I can’t remember that I didn’t show my rear-end like the Gators do, seemingly with great delight. Everybody knows that the arrogance of the UF fans is legendary. One day we’ll do it again and I hope that Dawg fans will show more class in victory than Florida does.

As for the ‘Anointed One’, his little show of attitude at the end of the game last night - running into the Oklahoma defensive backfield after he had gotten that game-clinching first down, getting in the face of one of the Sooners and parting with that damn ‘chomp’ - showed me that he ain’t nearly the class act that all his supporters claim he is. I mean, did God tell him to violate one of the Seven Deadlies with his display of ‘Pride’? Look it up folks - Wikipedia, for example - it’ll tell you that Pride is one of the worst of the Seven. Vanity, hubris and narcissism, aka a desire to appear more important and attractive than others…to let people know just how pleased you are with yourself. Well, HE, showed this side of himself right there in front of millions and it said a lot to me about his true character. I mean where was the ‘humility’ that he’s supposed to be famous for? Sure a lot of us would have done the same thing, but we ain’t trying to pass ourselves off as something we’re not.

My bet is God tells him to go pro and fund some more of those missions…why not, that’s what he’s all about ain’t he?

Yes, the Gators are no. 1 again. Suck it up nonbelievers. If you really think there is any other current college team that could right now beat (or, frankly, come within single digits of the Gators), you are dumb as a stump.

Utah? Do you really think Urban Meyer would lose to his last school?

Texas? Please! The Gators would crush them like bugs.

USC at the Rosebowl might put up a fight.

Oh well, UGA always has tennis and women’s gymnastics!

Florida football is not dropping any time soon, nonbelievers. Georgia: Richt is a good coach and you can be competitive; Same with Saban and Alabama. Now, FSU? With Bobby B. still at the helm, that game is now a gimme. Might as well replace it with more of a challenge—like UCF or USF. Ha!

SEC is by far the best conference. The last 3 national championships were won by the SEC and they went 6-2 in bowl games this year on a “down” year.

Utah gets credit for going undefeated, but they should only be ranked #3. When all you play is junior colleges and luck up and beat Alabama (Appalachian State beat Michigan in 2007 too!)… Sorry, that doesn’t qualify as #1. No way Utah would have beat Texas, Oklahoma, or Florida.

But since there is no playoff and it’s mostly subjective, we’ll never know. Anyone can have whatever “#1” they want.

When an employer wants to compile the most accurate information available about a potential hire, a Pre Employment Screening Check would be the best choice. Employment Background Check can include a driver vehicle records, county criminal search, statewide and national criminal search, as well as other verification options.

A complete Pre Employment Screening Check provides employers the confidence in knowing that they have made the best hiring decision based on the information available via an online database. Pre Employment Screening is now commonplace for employees wanting to protect their employees.
