One Man’s Opinion: Moreno stays; Stafford goes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Looking back on Jan. 1 and ahead to today’s games:
1. One man’s opinion: Moreno stays. Stafford goes: David Greene has to get the nod as Georgia’s best quarterback ever because he won an SEC championship and more games than any QB in history. But there has never been a Georgia quarterback more talented than Matthew Stafford. He was magnificent in the second half of yesterday’s Capital One Bowl, making every big throw that Georgia needed to pull away and win. Stafford has everything the NFL is looking for in a quarterback and, I believe, will soon learn that he will be the first quarterback taken in the draft should he decide to come out. Selfishly, I would love to see him come back because I’m a college football guy and we don’t see that many truly great quarterbacks come along. But I’m betting the sheer numbers involved tell Stafford to go. Hope I’m wrong.
Running back Knowshon Moreno will be a star in the NFL as long as he stays healthy. But there are going to be a bunch of really good running backs in this draft. Iowa’s Shonn Greene has already announced that he is leaving. Ohio State’s Beanie Wells may also go. If Stafford goes out there is no question that next season’s Georgia offense will be built around Moreno. I think he comes back and makes a run at the Heisman Trophy.
2. It’s painful watching South Carolina and The Ball Coach: I did not think it was possible for a team coached by Steve Spurrier to look so bad. We all knew that South Carolina really didn’t belong in a New Year’s Day bowl (the Outback) because the Gamecocks were so disjointed at the end of the season. Part of me thought Spurrier would rally his troops and put forth a really good effort against a decent Iowa team. Instead what South Carolina fans got was a pretty embarrassing performance. Iowa kicked South Carolina’s butts in just about every possible way and the Gamecocks finished 7-6. Now we get word that two of South Carolina’s best players—cornerback Captain Munnerlyn and linebacker Eric Norwood—are going to leave school early and turn pro. There needs to be a lot of soul searching in that football program in the offseason because something is not right.
3. Southern Cal could be the best team in the country: I thought Penn State’s defense was good enough to keep yesterday’s Rose Bowl with Southern Cal reasonably close. But the Trojans just steamrolled Joe Paterno’s team and the final score (38-24) did not reflect USC’s dominance. After the game coach Pete Carroll said his team could compete with anybody in the country and I think he is right. Southern Cal paid dearly for a road loss to Oregon State on Sept. 25. This would have been a really good year to have a four team playoff, or “Plus-One,” as SEC Commissioner Mike Slive likes to call it. Think there would have been any interest in semifinals that matched No. 1 Oklahoma vs. No. 4 Southern Cal and No. 2 Florida vs. No. 3 Texas?
Yes, Alabama fans, I know your team finished No. 4 in the BCS standings. But I believe very strongly that if the voters knew they had to put four teams in a playoff instead of just two, they would have voted USC at No. 4 and Alabama No. 5. Is that fair to Alabama? Of course not, but that is what I believe would have a happened.
4. Frank Beamer did his best coaching job ever: When Virginia Tech lost its opener to East Carolina, there were people—seemingly intelligent people—who thought that Frank Beamer was losing his touch. It looked bad for the Hokies because they had the worst of all worlds: a young defense, inconsistency at quarterback, and uncertainty at running back. But Virginia Tech’s defense improved every week, as it usually does under Bud Foster, and Beamer held his team together. The Hokies won their third ACC championship in the five seasons since they joined the league. And with last night’s 20-7 win over Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl, Virginia Tech has won 10 or more games in five straight seasons. Only Southern Cal and Texas can make that same claim. And speaking of coaching, when will one of these schools wise up and hire Foster as a head coach? There is no way this should have been a dominating defense this season at Virginia Tech. The man knows how to coach.
5. The SEC will go 3-0 today: Am I the only person on the planet who thinks Ole Miss will beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl? Based on the ESPN surveys there aren’t many of us. I know Texas Tech throws the ball all over the place but I also know that Ole Miss has some athletes up front and is fifth in the nation in quarterback sacks with 37.
It will be an ugly game, but remember that Kentucky has a chance to make history in today’s Liberty Bowl against East Carolina. The Wildcats have never won three straight bowls in the history of the school but could do exactly that today. In fact, this is only the second time that Kentucky has even PLAYED in three straight bowl games. The ‘Cats did it back in 1949-51 under Bear Bryant.
Alabama will prevail over undefeated Utah tonight in the Sugar Bowl. It will happen through the sheer force of Nick Saban’s will. Now this is not going to be an easy game for Alabama. Utah is a solid, well-coached football team. And the Alabama offense may be a little disjointed early because OT Andre Smith is gone. But over the course of 60 minutes Alabama will wear Utah down and pull away in the fourth quarter. Alabama will finish 13-1 and ranked in the final top five. That’s a pretty remarkable achievement in Saban’s second year.

Tony,
I think that we have seen the last of Knowshon. Some agent will convice him that he will be picked above Green and Wells, so he is outta here…
Stafford would benefit by staying, but he will most likely go. Who knows, maybe Jax or Tampa Bay will trade up and try to get him away from the Lions or Chiefs…

Tony, I recall that uga had a pretty good qb in the late 1950’s by the name of Fran Tarkenton. Stafford is a GOOD qb, but he’s not in the same league as Tark. Don’t think Stafford’s NFL career will approach Tark’s level either.

I believe the Dawgs will be better next year, yes, even if Knowshon and Stafford leave. 9 bigger, stronger, more experienced line back. Owens, Weston and the other tackle back. Marcus Washington Back. Some real Talent that was redshirted this year. I’m Ok with Cox at Qb. I think he is a better passer than Matt. Knows the Offense as good as the Coach’s. The running backs will “look” better because of the line. DB’s , 3 0f 4 back, although they need to bench Evans. We will be picked 12 or so in the country and second in the SEC east…That’s fine. Go Dawgs. And I hope a new mental attitude and some chemistry.

I think Stafford stays and Moreno goes.
I feel fairly certain that Stafford has been advised that the quarterbacks who do the best in the NFL (and it really is about a sustained/successful career, not a draft position) are the ones who stay for their senior year. He worked at the Manning Camp this summer and both of them stayed for their senior year and I believe I read on another website that someone from the Cowboys’ organization who works in scouting also told him to stay put. I could be wrong, but I think the first half of yesterday’s game will linger in his mind longer than the second one.
Moreno is ready to go—period.

The BCS is the biggest travesty on the planet. To let a few fools like Tony decide arbitrarily who plays in the final game is INSANE, when it should be decided on the field in a playoff. To say that Oklahaoma and Florida’s losses don’t count, but Texas and Alabama and Southern Cal and Texas Tech losses do count??? And Utah hasn’t even lost. I repeat, the BCS is the biggest travesty ever invented and anyone who supports it sucks as much as Tony and Chan Gailey…and Thank God and Greyhound that he is gone and the BCS should go with him.

Tony I agree Bama had their chance in the SEC championship. However you could make the argument that Bama lost to the the no.2 team and USC lost to Oregon St and you are going to penalize stronger conferences with championship games?
Like I said I agree with you but USC has no agrument on the NC.

I agree with JB Cox will do the job at QB. Also fewer drives will be killed by going for the long ball that misses more times than it hits. Stafford relies on his arm far to much. Moreno is a leader and a once a decade back it would be great to see him return. If the injury bug does not hit again and the lines remain healthy UGA will have a good year even if both head to the NFL.

Hey yellowblood, you guys must have had a great tickle pile after the LSU game. When was the last time you trade school boys won 10 games in a season? Never you say? It takes some ba**s to critize something you haven’t accomplished in your lifetime( maybe once in the 90’s).
LSU exposed you guys and I assure you we will start a new 7 year streak in November of football dominance over you nerds. 38-3, LSU, thanks for making my New Years Eve so wonderful nerds.

Unfortunately, Moreno and Stafford will both leave for the NFL. If the Dawgs don’t suffer a similar number of injuries next year, they may win 10 games again, or more, with less star players.
Where are all of those starry eyed Techeads, talking all that smack about wanting to schedule more SEC teams…like Bama, Florida, LSU….be careful what you wish for…remember, you won 1 game…you’re still Ga. Tech. Shut the #@&% Up.

tony, david greene was a good qb,but it proves that you need a complete team to win. it did not hurt to have david pollard and an anwsome defense in place when david greene played.
also, how many teams has david greene tried to play for in the nfl, and he has not made one yet.
david greene will not make anyone’s hall of fame teams.
trippi and tarkenton made two ,the college and nfl, i don’t david greene will make any!

I agree with La Jolla Dawg. I think Moreno’s gone. As one of the talking heads said yesterday, RBs only have so many hits in them. While he’ll need to bulk up some, that ability to start/stop and change direction at full speed will not improve. While I’d love him to stay, I don’t see another year improving his draft stock.
I’ll take Stafford at his word that he’s 50-50 on going. I think everyone agrees that staying will only make him better, but we don’t know the financial implications a rookie salary cap might have for him in 2010. Roger Goodell says it won’t be in place then, but with the expiration (or voiding) of the CBA, who knows for sure? I’d love to have him back, but isn’t college for preparing young people to make a living and a contribution to society? If so, I expect he’s gone, too. Besides, Ryan got 6 years and $72 million, albeit after his SENIOR season. Could any one of us advise his son to wait a year for that?
As for Not…’s comparison to Tarkenton, it’s hard to compare the different eras. Without question, Tarkenton was the consumate leader, but he was also QB who ran a lot and threw some, especially in the run-heavy college game of his time. It was his leadership and decision-making that made him a far better NFL QB than a college QB. Stafford’s arm skills are far superior to Tarkenton’s but only time will tell about the leadership and decision-making. Stafford has shown good leadership for a college QB, but the decision skills are still a work in process. Also, he’s a different QB after he’s been hit a few times. In Detroit or KC, he’ll get hit a LOT. Without question, he’s not nearly as ready to step onto an NFL field as Ryan was. Maybe he’ll get lucky and get to watch for a couple of years.
Either way, I wish only the best for both. Thanks for the memories. You’re both Bulldawgs for life!

carrol can whine about a playoff year in and year out, but its his own conference (and the big ten) and their rose bowl fetish that is primarily blocking it. try toalkin g to your own conference about it instead of whining to the media every year when you crush the big ten in a bowl no one outside the mid west/LA cares about.

Anybody have any idea why South Carolina can’t win? I can’t figure it out. They have one of the best (if not the best coach) in the country! Mr. Barnhart, you’re not the only person on the planet that thinks Ole Miss will beat Texas Tech. Mike Leach will look better on 60 Minutes than he does in the Cotton Bowl. If USC (the University of Spoiled Children) and Pete Carroll want to make a case for being the best team in the country, then they can call Tommy Hansen and tell him to do the right thing as opposed to clinging to the aristocratic Rose Bowl. Also, ESPN can keep Keyshawn Johnson and his ill fitted suit out of the way of the articulate Herbstreit and Musburger. Keyshawn is to USC what Barkley is to Auburn, i.e., a stumbling block!

Big Tone,
The USC Lamecocks were an outright embarrassment to SEC fans everywhere! Why my dawgs can’t beat them 42-0 every season is beyond me. Seve Garcia is terrible and so is the Ole Ball Coach. Tony please don’t forget their stud TE is probably going pro as well.
As far as my dawgs, I was impressed. We played poorly in the first half and other than KM, the rest of the guys on offense looked like they would rather be at Disney. But the D kept us in the game and we won an ugly one. I think Sweet Willie has figured out if you put pressure on a qb, then good things will happen most of the time. By the way, I was dissapointed that BOBO didn’t work harder to get AJ and MM the 1000 rec yards. Horrid play calling in the first half coach!
As far as all of you Tech dorks who have been riding mighty high for the past few weeks……. You officially suck again!

When the NFL commish says the cap won’t be in place by 2010, I think you can take that to the bank (pardon the pun).
Stafford showed yesterday (1st half, in particular) why he needs to stay, but there’s not much keeping Knowshon at UGA another year. I think he bolts for the cash and will be a decent, not great NFL back.
David Greene was a very good college QB and like most of those, it does not translate to an NFL career. Greene had the benefit of a veteran O-line and a very solid defense when he was at UGA. His arm strength was not NFL caliber, though, and with the speed in the NFL, you’ve gotta have the arm. Stafford has the arm, but needs to work on his mechanics. Too many throws off the back foot and tendency to “throw darts” rather than make a decisive pass.
I’d like to see Stafford stay and think he will.

Tony, We get the same tired mantra from USC, and the goofballs at ESPN ,every year after they have overwhelmed an underwhelming Big Ten(plus one) team in the Rose. Bottomline USC if you are “great” you don’t lose to a pitiful UCLA team when a win puts you in the BCS game versus OSU instead of FL. or lose at home to STANFORD!!! Or lose to Oregon State, and I don’t care what Colin, the USC apologist, Herd says no one saw that stumble coming especially after Oregon State had gotten the beat down by Penn State. USC is living proof that every game in college football is a playoff game.

Moreno most likely goes to NFL. Stafford would benefit by staying another year but don’t know if he will. Even if he goes we have enough qb talent to compete in the SEC. The defense showed great character in the bowl game. It was a tough tough year for them but they didn’t give up (like GT did!) and played very well. MS was not the talent of a Fl or AL. We need more meat in the middle and height and speed in the secondary. Overall it was a good year (obviously not great) considering all of the injuries suffered. UGA could still field a good to great team next year.

Matt Satfford will definetely benefit from staying and refining some mechanical problems. He will be stronger by staying than riding the pine for a couple of years in the NFl. Knowshon has nothing else to prove. He will go and do rather well not great, in the NFL. If he did great, more powerto him.

I think it is a BIG mistake to leave early for the NFL. Moreno is pretty good, but that is a completely different world in the NFL. Those guys are HUGE and disciplined and he does not have the experience necessary. Vince Young (TEXAS) thought he was the up and coming and now he doesn’t even play. THese guys are too young and it is a shame someone throws stupid money at them insted of taking the time to develop them.

It’s almost as if the offensive issue couldn’t be resolved until halftime and Richt was just happy with getting into the locker room keeping the score where it was. I was puzzled by that and his response to the sideline reporter, as well. This leads me to more questions about our ability (or inability) to make in-game adjustments…
One thing is for sure, they came out in the 3rd quarter and decided to play a little. Kudos to the “D” for limiting the other team who spent most of the 1st half on our side of the 50. Looks like Willie bought himself another year.

Tony, You are not the only one who thinks Ole Miss beats Texas Tech. I think that great Ole Miss D-line harasses Harrell all day long. It will be the best d-line he has gone up against with the possible exception of OU. Nose tackle Jerry Peria and their defensive end Greg Hardy are as good at their position as anyone in the country. Expect these guys to sack Harrell at least 5 times and expect Ole Miss to move the ball at will against TT. Remember, this team is the only team that beat Florida all season and they did it in the swamp. They were also the only team that played Bama to the wire in the regular season losing only 24-20 in Tuscaloosa. The game ended with Ole Miss turning the ball over on downs at midfield in the last minute. They got better and better as the year went on and pounded the hell out of LSU and Miss. St. to finish the season.
Stafford should go if he is the number 2 rated qb and projected the number 7 overall pick. Knowshon should probably go to. If Stafford doesn’t go then next year he will probably slip because coming out will be Colt McCoy, Tebow. It is kinda funny to see that JB says that Joe Cox has the better arm than Stafford. Really? If you asked 100 dawg fans the same question I wonder how many would say the backup Joe Cox is better. Too funny.

Unless UGA at least wins the East next year and unless Richt and his staff can eliminate the on field and off the field problems, 2009 will be CMR’s last year with UGA.

i have to disagree on bud foster a little. he seems to get much the same public perception as will muschamp, something of a super coach or something. the last time uga played vt we were down at the half 21-3 and stormed back against his superior coaching and whipped them in the second half. stafford the freshman shredded his defense all over and beat his blitz packages all through the second half. it was ugly. same thing happened in 2006 and 2007 when we played auburn. we shredded muschamp’s guys all over and embarrassed them. it wasn’t even close. yet these two guys get props in public for being superior coaches. i just don’t get it.

Tony, Stafford was anointed “great” before his freshman year. In the 3 seasons since, he has shown plenty of talent, but not greatness. Each year, you and others say he’ll have his “great” year “next year”. Face it, he’s not a great college QB, and I wouldn’t book it that he’ll be any better as a pro. (yeah, I know what scouts say; they’ve drunk the kool-aid too.)

Some bloggers have noted that Cox will be a good QB next year if Stafford turns pro a year early. How can you come to that conclusion?? Cox has never been given a chance. Richt’s sportsmanlike unwritten policy is to win but not embarrass an opponent ( though we couldn’t beat Ga. Southern or Central Mich. by much anyway ). This policy, which is unlike Fla., USC, Okla. and others, not only hurts our rankings from voters but keeps second teamers such as Cox from getting much needed experience.

Tony, Good column. Hey Blackberry Cobbler, you are no UGA fan. I’m tired of hearing that Tbags was hurt. I guess that means Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, and the other 3 bowl teams that UGA beat. We didn’t ask to play Hawaii but we beat them. If you remember we didn’t play Ohio becuase of a great lobby by LSU on ESPN.
Tony,
Niether of those players are ready for the NFL, but the NFL is quality player poor right now. I think if if Stafford stayed another year, he would command the respect that Ryan did.
UGA may have the best team in history next year. It all depends on injuries. However, you have to look at the schedule again. OSU, and ASU out of confrerence, more SEC road games than home games, (that may be a blessing!)and a better in conference schedule.
South Carolina, it proves that the old coach has a great plan for great college players. Not pros, not average college players. With the talent he gets there, the best deal for him is a run and shoot type of approach. He needs to realize that he needs to change his approach just a little to turn it around. He is not at UF any more, and he is not in the ACC anymore. He can turn it around, but he needs to change his philosphy just a touch.
Ole Mis might win, but TT is a stong team, and they will be ready for blood.
Southern Cal is good, and until we get the crummy confernce teams out of the BCS, or a playoff, we will never have those types of matchups. Why was Ohio State in the last two BCS games? Why was Va Tech playing Cincy? It basically made Alabama play Utah, wouldn’t it be better to see USC play Bama or Tex, and the other play Penn State. The BCS system has run amuck, and we need to fix it.

LOL! I always laugh at the Joe Cox fans. Joe Cox isn’t half the QB that Stafford is. He can’t make half the throws that Stafford does and has nowhere near the ability. Not to mention he has little to know game experience. There will be a significant if not big dropoff at the QB spot if Stafford goes.
As for Stafford killing drives? Give me a break as*hat. Bobo’s playcalling, penalties, and poor offensive line play have killed 10 times as many drives as Stafford has. Stafford has kept more drives alive with his arm than any 3 QBs ever have at UGA.

I was unhappy with the play calling at the end of the 1st half too. Why chuck up three long balls when you have plenty of time to work the ball down the field? The entire game was a microcosm of the season. First half was the sloppy/undisciplined Dawg team that played against UF and AL. Second half was the Dawg team that showed up against UT/AZ St. etc.
Props to the D. They showed up big and saved our behinds in the first half. As a fan and alum, I’d like to see more discipline on and off the field. Richt has shown that he can make changes (ie. more intensity last year), so hopefully he will make this a priority in the off season and leading into the 09 season.
As for Stafford and Moreno, it’s been great having them as Dawgs and hope whichever decision they make it works out best for them. Go Dawgs!

LOL! Please do me a favor and shut up you stupid idiot. He’s already had a great year. This year was a great year. Completing over 60% of your passes for 3500 yards and 25 TDs(more than any UGA QB ever) is a great year. Stafford is the only reason we have 10 wins dumbass. We don’t beat Auburn, Kentucky, MSU, or a couple of other teams without him. Stafford can’t help that he plays with an awful defense, and is hamstrung by an offensive coordinator that is an atrocious playcaller.
Fools like you should be seen and not hear.

Thanks Give it UP . I thought I was the only one who noticed how Stafford was anointed the great savior and has not done anything but throw off his back foot and behind receivers or late to receivers at 100 mph. Who cares how hard you throw. Does anyone remember Preston Jones, he had the best arm of any GA Qb. There also is this one guy from Marietta name Eric Zeir who had a pretty good right arm and he played a little in the NFL. Stafford would benefit UGA to leave because he is OVER OVER OVER Rated. You Heard Me. Look at his stats. The guy on ESPN actually said he may have hurt his stock with his performance. Mel Kiper has everyone believing in him but take a good look at him (yes I know he is a young adult not a kid) for what he does on the field. With an all world receiver (AJG) and another decent receiver (MM) his number pretty much stayed the same.
Joe Cox never was given a fair shot at the QB job and anyone who says differently are the same ones who are still looking for the WMD in Iraq (LMAO).

Can we quit talking about Stafford coming out? Why in the world would he? He’s not ready and at times looks like a complete boob on the field. He needs another year of experience. Show me one good NFL QB who came out early. Knowshown should go.. Stafford has a LONG way to go before he’s starting an NFL game.
1st half yesterday was one of the ugliest performances I’ve ever seen.
I’m a dogs fan, but I’m sick of hearing about how great he is. He has tons of talent, but you can’t be ‘great’ until you’re consistent. If he comes out, then to heck with him!

I guess Joe forgot those 13 Int’s. Word on the street was that Tebow has thrown for 8 Int’s in 3 years of college and Bradford threw for only 2 this year and 4000 yards. Stafford sucks as a QB and ifhe is great then some QB that played for the Birds should be a HOF and NO I am not talking about a MV but talking about a JG. Figure it out . Name one QB who can say they had better talent than JG. Not even Elway can say he had better talent than one JG. Notice I said talent not the total package.

Given the chance of injury at his position, Moreno needs to go. A shame really, because the matured OL at UGA next year will turn whoever is handed the ball into a star.
Stafford would do well to stay, but given his inability to fulfill his ‘potential’ thus far, I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say that whoever is under center next year has a great chance to match the production we’ve seen from Stafford.
Compliments to Coach Martinez for having the D ready yesterday. The last time they looked that good was a year ago when they shut down Hawaii. Too bad he coaches in the SEC.

mark richt is the reason why this team has underachieved. he allow his overrated qb to change every play at the line of scrimmage to put himself in the spot light instead of handing the ball off to moreno who is by far the best offensive weapon we have. i hope richt’s overrated qb(strafford) leave and moreno stays.
i believe aaron murray will come in next season and run our offense ten times better than mark richt’s overrated qb.
i’m afraid that clueless mark richt will stick with his defensive coordinator and ruin our kids future.

Everyone keeps bringing up past QB’s. They are not saying that Staff is the best ever at UGA, but the talent he has he could be. He may not make all the plays, but look how he runs the offense. if I recall that was the number 1 in the SEC this year. He has put us in the position to win alot of games and I think he is a great leader. Just because is not up and yelling at the rest of the guys has nothing to do with his leadership. Staff has been fun to watch and I will continue to do so weather he returns or go’s. Thanks fo a great year!!!!

Maybe you didn’t watch the Rose Bowl. If you saw it you know USC OWNED state. You lost to a team Oregon State would have beaten. You get a shot at the NC, good luck. But don’t talk sh!t.
If USC would have been served Ohio State the past two years in the BCS NC, We would have 3 BSC titles, not one.

yea, with a dropped punt, int, and a dejected offense, dog tired defense, what could possible have gone wrong, calling TO before securing the 1st down? I’m sure MSU really hated the idea of possibly getting the ball back with a minute or more left. That meaningless 3 points would have been so worth the risk of giving up a stupid score right before the half. Not undertanding the decision is simply that. The man has the offensive coaches in his ears and the players in his eyes. Maybe he knew a bit more than we did from the livingroom, or the announcer booth?

Two points. First, I can’t understand all the howling just because UGA beat Michigan State in a game nobody seemed to want to win. It further exposed the fact that Mark Richt might be a cool logo but carries on the tradition of suvival by recruiting a roster of superstars but producing mediocre teams at best. If he plans to stay, he needs to replace the Defensive Coordinator prior to Spring training and also look hard at replacing Bobo. Second, I am equally miffed trying to understand why either Stafford or Moreno would leave Athens early without a college degree to play in the NFL “business”—instead of “taking care of business” and providing leadership to their alma mater next year when they could acutally win a National Championship. Their decisions will measure their character—mercenaries or true-blue Georgia Bulldogs. Can anyone remember anyone who was injured his senior year to the extent that he was no longer NFL material? Maybe a couple, but… Be true to your school, get a degree, and win a national championship! That, my friend, is priceless and can never be squandered or wasted away…

I would like to see Stafford and Moreno stay in college and give the gators a run for the title in the sec east conference in 09. Alabama will win the sugar bowl game tonight, but it will be a nail biter and Saban will probably have the crimson tide play conservation in the first half and hopefully run over Utah in the second half. I would love for a blow out game like Georgia’s game last year against the rainbow warriors. ROLL TIDE FOLKS and one other thing, ERIC1 sorry to hear about your father’s passing away.

Stafford is an unbelievable quarterback that Georgia would be very fortunate to have for another year. There is a reason he will be a likely top 5 pick in the draft. I think there is a big part of Staff that says he needs work and he knows it. Next year with the Dawgs instead of money that he doesn’t seem to hold as dear as Tony wants us to think. That will do Staff and the Dawgs a good advantage in the NC race. I believe that there is something up concerning his take on the FU game. I think there is enough Dawg in him for Staff to put things right in Jax, Tusc. and Atl next year. If he returns, it should be with a vengence. Sic’em Matt!

Tybee, even as close as they are calling that this year, that was prety bogus. There aught to be a rule that if the defended actually left his feet before the ball is released, its NOT roughing. My guess is that they are going to say he lead with the helmet, which clearly on replay he did not. Oddly enough, one of our guys came a lot closer and could have easily been called on MSU last possession, so it evened out I guess.

Comments in response to Tony——
(1) Moreno stays, Stafford goes? If so, that may be the best scenario for Georgia’s offense. Joe Cox steps up, Moreno is another year older and more polished, together with the Dawgs’ offensive line being bigger and more experienced.
But what about the Dawgs’ famously inconsistent defense? Looking over the Dawgs’ 2008 season, there were several games where the offense was largely stymied, but their defense kept them in the game, including games against South Carolina (14-7), Vanderbilt (24-14), and Auburn (17-13). Against Alabama, neither offense or defense showed up in the first half (31-0, 1st and 2nd quarters); against Florida, neither offense nor defense showed up in the second half (35-7, 3rd & 4th quarters). Against Georgia Tech, the defense barely slowed the Yellow Jackets down during the 3rd quarter (26-0).
Adequate replacements already exist for Stafford and Moreno. But, Tony, the real question is will the Dawgs’ defense return?
(2) Yup, it sure is. I remember the Evil Genius during his 1990s Gator glory days, and he must be humiliated by his team’s performance the last two seasons. Yesterday, South Carolina’s 5 first-half drives ended in 3 interceptions, a fumble and a punt. Gamecock QB Stephen Garcia, who accounted for the three interceptions and the fumble, does not look like the solution to Spurrier’s offensive woes.
(3) You know, Tony, you could be right. Southern Cal may be the best college football team in the country, and this year may have been the perfect year for a plus-1 match-up of the Trojans and the Florida-Oklahoma winner, but we will never know, primarily because the Rose Bowl committee, Big Ten and Pac-10 have vehemently opposed any move to any kind of a playoff. Keep shooting yourselves in the foot, boys, because it’s likely to a while before anyone bends over to do USC or Ohio State any favors, with their weak Pac-10 and Big Ten conference schedules and OSU’s recent weak BCS performances.
Ironically, a playoff is probably USC’s best opportunity to get back to the title game … at least until they quit losing regular season games to unranked Oregon State, Stanford and UCLA teams. In the mean time, Coach Carroll may want to have a talk with the Pac-10 and Big Ten conference commissioners. We will have a playoff when the presidents of USC, Ohio State and Michigan demand it, and threaten to replace their conference commissioners. In the mean time, enjoy all that extra Rose Bowl TV money.
(4) The verdict is now in: sure, there is a lot of parity in the ACC, but it’s parity of the mediocre. Virginia Tech, 8-4 during the regular season, survived the ACC championship game and beat a Big East champion Cincinnati team that was not ready for a prime-time New Year’s bowl game. One team had to survive the ACC season, and it was Virginia Tech. I give Beamer and his Hokies credit for gutting it out.
As for the whole ACC-SEC p** match, the Vanderbilt and LSU wins over Boston College and Georgia Tech evened the 2008 conference head-to-head at 6 wins apiece for the ACC and SEC. Call it a draw, fellas, but don’t mock the SEC defenses again——Vandy held the ACC runner-up to two touchdowns, and LSU held the 3rd-best-in-the-ACC Yellow Jackets to a single field goal.
(5) I wish Ole Miss and Kentucky well in their bowl games, but I think Tony is being overly optimistic about a 3-0 day for the SEC. Eleven minutes into the 1st quarter, and Texas Tech leads Ole Miss by 14. I don’t have a good read on the Kentucky-East Carolina match-up, but I expect Alabama to beat Utah by at least two touchdowns.
Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win (they usually do).

31-0 at the half?!!
Regarding Stafford and Moreno:
Stafford has a big arm - but will be a bust in the NFL. He consistently over throws - or under throws the deep ball.
He throws too hard on short passes (see the Moore incompletion and interception yesterday - folks, that was on the QB, not the WR)
Stafford looks good against less talented teams - but against top ranked competition - he has carried his team and looks very average.
I personally do not see what the big fuss is about - Zeir, Green and Schockly were all better QBs.
With that said - I believe Stafford should stay at UGA - he needs a lot of polishing.
Moreno - go and get the money - RB’s do not live long in the NFL - the wear and tear and pounding adds up quickly. Take the money, invest wisely, and thank you for picking an SEC team to play for - you have been a great back for UGA.
Ole Miss will keep it close - but Texas Tech will win. KY will be in a fight - and I hope they pull it out- I am 50/50 if they win.
Bama will beat UTAH - but agree with Tony - will pull away in the 4th.

Oledawg——Okay. Ole Miss is clearly in this game, and leads 24-21 at the half. The pick-6 by Texas Tech looms large; otherwise, the Rebs lead by 10, not 3.
Having watched the Rebs stretch the Gators, I should have known better. The Red Raiders have only two offensive touchdowns, but Harrell has thrown an interception and his team has been forced to punt twice.
The Ole Miss defense looks good enough to slow this vaunted Big XII offense. Let’s hope Coach Nutt and company can keep finish the drill.

I think Ole Miss wins too. I agree that the SEC goes 3-0 today. Bama will dominate Utah.
It is painful to watch the abysmal offense of South Carolina. This is a Spurrier coached offense? Man, talk about regretting leaving UF. Spurrier’s teams have sucked ever since he left for the NFL. I think he should just go play golf, because he can’t coach anymore.
USC was impressive at home. I still think UF or Bama could beat them though. Oregon State did. I’m sick of people saying USC is the best. Play a big boy SEC team and win, then you can say that.
I hear the commentators say that Frank Beamer did his best coaching job yesterday too Tony. I see you get a lot of your topics from other media types.
Let me put Beamer in perspective. He lost four games this year in a medicore conference. How does that possibly warrant the “atta boy” slap on the back? That was not a big feat in the ACC.

Willie Martinez does not represent the spirit of UGA football defense. Erk Russell is turning over in his grave. Martineze is in over his head and is causing inflation in Athens with his $200+ salary that should be claimed as unearned income. The Dawgs may have won yesteday against a second tier Big Ten team, but if the Dawg Nation ever wants to see another SEC Championship, much less more, then this guy has got to go. Pack his bags. The anchor of all champion teams is defense. I’m hoping that Damon Evans will pull the trigger on him. After all, he did play football at UGA! Great coaches, like great field commanders, must make hard decisions for the greater cause even when it involves a personal relationship. Mark Richt needs to watch the old movie Twelve O’Clock High. He seems to be too close to the issue and his letting his friendship get in the way of winning. The field commander must relieve the poor perfomer if mission accomplishment is threatened. I’m thinking that Sylvester Croom would be a home run hit as the defensive coordinator.

G8R GRAD——Good game to watch … better Ole Miss chews on the Red Raiders than on the Gators. The Rebs are clearly a better team than anyone thought at the beginning of the season.
As you probably remember, the two Mississippi SEC schools have given the Gators fits over the last 20 years. Since 1990, Ole Miss is the only SEC team to break even (3-3, or .500) against the Gators. Mississippi State has the second best SEC record (3-5, or .375) against the Gators during the same time. Weirdly, no other SEC team has a better winning percentage against the Gators since 1990.
At 9-4, Ole Miss should easily finish in the AP top 15, and Coaches top 20. Good for them. Glad the Gators don’t have to play them again next year.

JB: “DB’s , 3 0f 4 back, although they need to bench Evans.”
I think you mean they need to bench Miller. Evans has been moved to safety and has been playing well there. Miller is a good 4 inches shorter than most receivers and seems to get beat more often than not — and not just on deep routes. Evans probably saved a TD yesterday when Asher thought he had tackled the MSU player but the whistle never blew. Evans didn’t quit on the play and rocked the MSU player while the rest of our defense was standing around looking lost.

I do regret that a lot of good Carolina fans have to suffer because of his arrogance and stubborness, but if you lie with dogs you’re gonna get fleas. Spurrier has made it a point throughout his career of insulting other schools’ programs, academics, and fans, so the jerk gets no sympathy. What a fitting end to his career - losing to UGA, Florida, and Tennessee on a regular basis. he is liked only by sportswriters trolling for a good story, and fans of the school he currently coaches for.

Regarding USC Trojans
I had the benefit of attending the Rose Bowl yesterday and since it was over, not once have I heard on sports reporter mention how Penn St lost their secondary coach somewhere on the way to game. My grandmother could have thrown for 300+ yards against a team playing Cover 3 all game long. It was obvious early on that USC would continuously go to its’ receivers as long as Penn St stayed in that zone. They never pressed the receivers and while repeatedly rushing the QB they left the middle open for passes across the middle all game. So before you anoint USC some mega-power, validate them against a team that knows how to make defensive adjustments unlike PSU. For Joe Paterno to be sitting in the pressbox all game and not see or do anything about this is pathetic!

Hey Bama Stan, please thank the Alabama Low Tide for emabrassing the SEC with that stellar performance against the UTES. You guys just did massive damage to the SEC’s reputation.
Out coached, out husteled, out hit, out everything. Pathetic showing. Unbelievably bad. Can you say La. Tech game 2007. Nice start to 2009.

Stafford should go out immediately. He cannot in any way raise his status by coming back. He’s already considered a top five pick and maybe, the first QB taken. You can’t get much better than that and can certainly get worse…and worse yet, injured. Moreno should go out too. He can certainly improve his status from a top 20 pick to a top 10 the next year, BUT, as delicate as he’s been at times this season by pulling himself out as injured, he runs a big risk of getting hurt and losing money. Let’s be honest…both came to uga to improve their draft status first and maybe win some individual awards and conference or national titles second. They came to train for their pro careers and they’ve done that and are ready to get paid.

Amen Mickey! In the post-game interview, Saban was crying about loosing 2 offensive linemen … how many linemen (offense & defense) did GA loose and still put 30 on Bama. By the way, Bama had a walloping 31 yards rushing.

Bama Stan, congrats on your nice cinderella season. Too bad you finished with a whimper. I feel your pain. I remember last year’s Sugar Bowl when we had to play an undefeated, overrated non-bcs team that Mark May said would clean our clocks. It was just like this year. Well, except for the fact that we beat them senseless instead of the other way around.
No SEC title, no Sugar Bowl title. No titles this millennium but it was still a respectable season. After all you did have an overrated, injury-ridden, non-tackling Georgia team 31-0 at the half.

We were completely unprepared. We lost to a Mountain West team. That is impossible with our talent. After all, we are an upper echelon team with 12 national titles. We had that perennial mid-tier Georgia team down 31-0 at the half. How could we lose. It had to be the coaching. This is why you should not hire coaches that did not play for the Bear.

Maybe SOS will take his smirk and sarcasm to Jax and retire with all the millions Snyder is still paying him.
Maybe WM will look at how LSU handled GT and see if we can do that for another 7 years.
Maybe the writers will not pick UGA to win any games (maybe TN Tech) in 2009 and we can have a “successful” season.

UGA asked for a shot at the Rose bowl last year, and was denied. Don’t go calling folks out, when evidence shows otherwise, “son”. As for the AP, that should probably go to Utah, so you really don’t have a claim to that either. All you had to do is beat Oregon State, but you couldn’t. Utah could, but not SC. As a matter of fact, wasn’t the MWC undefeated against the PAC-10 this year? Probably shouldn’t throw stones there either. Maybe, one day, when your conference schedule justifies overcoming a loss to an unranked team, you’ll get the benefit of the doubt. Maybe you are better than OU or UF, who knows? But, that really shouldn’t matter to a good team.

AS for SC not playin’ anyone worth a damn, well then I guess y’all don’t think too much of the barners or the pigs (4-0) nuff said! It’s amazing how y’all hide behind “confrence” references when TRYING to make a case for being better than us. Then again that IS the only way you can HOPE to compete.
Don’t hate us just cause you’re afraid of us, try harder to be as good as us then maybe y’all will feel better about yourselves. That green “envy” y’all display is just not cool, nor does it do anything for your chances with the ladies.

SC, now your just making stuff up. UGA asked for the Rose Bowl well before any selections were made, “son”. USC did perform well against AU and Ark., therefore you argument about SEC teams being afraid to play you holds no weight. No hate, just facts. Your losses to unranked conference opponents have cost you shots at the BCS title the last three seasons. Plus Ohio State’s losses in the title game takes some of the shine off of that victory. No one has said that USC isn’t a quality program. But when their fans spout off about how great they are, and other people being “afraid” to play them, it’s just not true. After you beat UGA, come back to the Atlanta Journal Constitution web articles about UGA football players’ pro prospects to off-topic brag about your team. Henry;
I think Moreno stays, mainly because he only had an OK year vs the breakout season he was projected too. Also the draft is gonna be heavy with talent at all postions (several RB’s)and he might very well find himself sliding out of the 1st round into the 2nd. That will cost him big $$$$! He stays and he will almost surely be one of the top two/three names for the Heisman. Remember too on draft day that the experts are predicting that 7-10 players in the first round are coming from SC, most of them on defense. Fully a third of the first round could very well be just from one school! Coach Carroll has a gold mine in SoCal and the NFL has taken up residence outside Heritage Hall just waiting for the next ruck load of talent come draft day! Iasy he stays, his draft stock will only go up if does!

Tony,
I guess you got 2 out of 3 correct, I personnally thought the SEC would go 2 and 1 yesterday, but I figured Kentucky would be the loss not Bama, Utah came out angry and with a Chip on their shoulders and it looked like the Bama players expected to win by just showing up.
SC Rules!!! I would like to set you straight about something, FACT is Georgia has tried to schedule the Trojans on at least 4 occasions, it was the AD at USC that wouldn’t go for it. Besides USC owes us three return trips to Athens as all 3 times we played you was in LA. And before you start with the bragging about USC, I have always said USC would be able to compete in the SEC but they wouldn’t dominate the SEC the way they have dominated the PAC 10.
Now as for Moreno and Stafford going or staying, it would be better for Georgia if Moreno stays because he is a one of a kind player in that he makes the guys around him better simply by his presence. Matt Stafford has the tools to be a Great QB but until he gets his mechanics straightened out and decides in his heart that he is going to be the best he will never achieve greatness on the football field. He will only show flashes of his greatness i.e. the second half Wednesday.
IMHO Stafford would benefit by staying and if he truly dedicates himself to getting better Georgia would be a formidable opponent and he would have a better chance of being a great QB in the NFL. I also think Moreno should stay simply because I believe he would have another year to get bigger and stronger and this would help him at the next level as well. Of course both of these young men have to weigh a lot of things in their decisions and I wish them all the best in whatever they decide.

Wow. I thought Utah was a better team than many people gave it credit, but I couldn’t imagine the 21-0 first quarter result that left Alabama in a hole for the remainder of the game. Alabama plays great ball-control offense, not catch-up, and it has not been more apparent all season than it was in last night’s Sugar Bowl game.
Give Saban credit though. He coached a team from 6-7 to 12-2 in the space of a year, and got nearly flawless play from a very average quarterback in the preocess. Problem was he needed a great quarterback who could engineer a comeback against a good, perhaps great, defense last night. And that is not John Parker Wilson.
Humility is a virtue and a strength, and Bama has a lot about which to be humble. The Tide will be back, with a vengeance, next season. Do not mock them. The football gods love irony and hate schadenfreude.

Who’s your daddy award- Nice, very Nice couldn’t agree with you more. Both of these guys shot themselves in the foot.
Best Bowl Performance definitely goes to Ole Miss as they were getting no respect and they played with controlled anger and a chip on their shoulders in dominating a very, very good Texas Tech team. It is obvious that the Rebels had become a great team by the end of the year. While the Dawgs never approached their full potential.
I see Tennessee hired Ed Ogeron to be their recruiting coordinator. Things are getting interesting with the staff they are putting together. I guess we will see if it pays off for them.
I hate to say this but Utah should be declared National Champions, undefeated 13-0, manhandled Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and beat 4 top 25 teams during the year and I believe I seem to remember that teams from the Mountain West were like 7-0, 8-0 or something against the PAC 10.
I also hate to say this but I hope the Gators beat the Sooners badly.

So for the record, since the BCS has been forced to take on the lesser conferences, the only team to represent their BCS conference is… UGA!
Three years ago when Boise was supposed to be so good and they came to Athens, everyone and their brother picked it as their “upset special”. The Dawgs came out and man handled the little guys and put Boise in their place…that is until Oklahoma decided not to show up in the fiesta the next year.
Then the Dawgs get stuck playing Hawaii last year. What happens? Same song and dance - idiots at ESPN called for the upset. No way we can out score that unstoppable Hawaii offense. Result: Dawgs win in a rout, everyone back tracks and says “so what, it’s just Hawaii”.
So how bout it? A little respect for what we accomplished last year? Now because of Alabama, teams like Boise, Utah, and Hawaii are going to get serious looks at the end of the season and may jump ahead of an SEC or Big 12 school to play in the NC. Way to go Bama!

You have it backwards. Moreno goes and Stafford stays. Morena already has an NFL body and will have the combines to show his stuff. Knowshon has nothing more to prove in college and as has been pointed out by the TV analysts, a RB only has so many carries and hits in him.
Stafford in spite of his great arm requires another year of mental seasoning IMO. Matt could use another season to improve his mechanics and leadership skills. You and a lot of others are assuming Stafford will be the first QB taken in the draft. I don’t think that is a lock, especially with Bradford as an option.
