Merry Christmas! Let’s go bowling!

We’re going to take next week off in order to get ready for Christmas. Hope you and yours have a wonderful Holiday Season! Thanks for your support this season. It has been a lot of fun.

But before we go, let’s preview the bowl season, which starts on Saturday. The first part of the preview will be the 10 best bowl story lines. In other words, they are the games that I would pay to see if I didn’t do this for a living. Then, as an added bonus, we are going to pick all 34 bowl games. I had a pretty decent bowl season in 2008 when it came to picking games. I sense this season will be tougher.

In any event, have fun with this and if you disagree let me know about it. See you after Christmas.

TB’s 10 BEST BOWL STORY LINES

1. BCS National Championship: No. 1 Oklahoma (12-1) vs. No. 2 Florida (12-1), Jan. 8: For the second time in five years, both teams in the national championship game have Heisman Trophy winners at quarterback. Florida’s Tim Tebow and Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford have led offenses that have been unstoppable this season. Oklahoma leads the nation in scoring (54.0 ppg) and Florida is third (45.15 ppg). Both coaches, Bob Stoops and Urban Meyer, are going for their second national championship. This one has the look of the USC-Texas Rose Bowl for the 2005 championship. Last team with the ball wins. TB’s Pick: Florida 35, Oklahoma 31.

2. Fiesta Bowl: No. 3 Texas (11-1) vs. No. 10 Ohio State (10-2), Jan. 5: After getting taken to the woodshed in past two BCS title game, you would think that Ohio State is ready to man up and play well. But Texas is the aggrieved party in this bowl season. The Longhorns beat Oklahoma 45-35 on Oct. 11 and believe they, not the Sooners, should be playing Florida for the BCS title. Texas wants to lay a big number on Ohio State. Then, if Oklahoma beats Florida, Texas might get a share of the national title from the Associated Press. TB’s Pick: Texas 31, Ohio State 21.

3. Rose Bowl: No. 5 Southern Cal (11-1) vs. No. 8 Penn State (11-1), Jan. 1: With one different bounce of the ball for each team, this game could have been for the national championship. Southern Cal lost to Oregon State 27-21 back on Sept. 25 and Penn State lost to Iowa 24-23 on a field goal at the buzzer on Nov. 8. Southern Cal, which leads the nation in scoring defense (7.8 ppg), probably wins this one easily, but I’ll watch because, despite the fact that he just got a three-year extension to his contract, it just might be the last game for Penn State coach Joe Paterno (43 years, 383 wins). Don’t be surprised if Penn State makes this closer than the experts think. TB’s Pick: Southern Cal 28, Penn State 21.

4. Cotton Bowl: No. 25 Ole Miss (8-4) vs. No. 7 Texas Tech (11-1), Jan. 2: Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is mad because his quarterback, Graham Harrell, was not invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremonies. He’ll try to take out his frustrations on the Rebels of Houston Nutt, the only team to beat Florida this season. It is the classic power vs. finesse game. It will also be the last Cotton Bowl in the old stadium by the Texas State Fairgrounds. Next season the Cotton Bowl moves to Jerry Jones’ new $1 billion playpen in Arlington, Tex. TB’s Pick: Ole Miss 34, Texas Tech 31.

5. Poinsettia Bowl: No. 9 Boise State (12-0) vs. No. 11 TCU (10-2), Dec. 23: TCU’s only losses were to No. 1 Oklahoma (35-10) and No. 6 Utah (13-10) in a game the Horned Frogs should have won. TCU has the nation’s No. 2 defense (215.08 ypg). In any other year Boise State would be in a BCS game but No. 6 Utah got the slot reserved for the non-BCS conferences. Can Boise hang with the Horned Frogs? Nope. TB’s Pick: TCU 31, Boise State 21.

6. Sugar Bowl: No. 6 Utah (12-0) vs. No. 4 Alabama (12-1), Jan. 2: Utah is a battle-tested team that is carrying the banner for the non-BCS conferences. Last year Georgia took Hawaii to the woodshed in this game. So there is some pressure on Utah, which has the nation’s No. 18 defense and a very good quarterback on Brian Johnson. I’m watching to see if Alabama will get over its disappointment from the SEC championship game loss and become only the second team in school history to win 13 games. (Alabama’s 1992 national championship team finished 13-0). TB’s Pick: Alabama 24, Utah 14.

7. Chick-fil-A Bowl: LSU (7-5) vs. No. 14 Georgia Tech (9-3), Dec. 31: To say that the Georgia Tech fans are excited would be an understatement. They have bought up every ticket in sight and are ready to take on the defending national champions. I want to see if LSU, whose defense has had problems all season, is going to step up and take this game seriously. If they aren’t ready to play, Georgia Tech will (literally) run them out of the Dome. Ten wins in Paul Johnson’s first season at Tech would be pretty remarkable. Georgia Tech could also finish in the final Top 10. TB’s Pick: Georgia Tech 35, LSU 28.

8. Capital One Bowl: No. 15 Georgia (9-3) vs. No. 18 Michigan State (9-3), Jan. 1: I’m watching to see a duel of two great running backs. Michigan State’s Javon Ringer is the nation’s No. 3 rusher (132.5 ypg) while Georgia’s Knowshon Moreno is No. 16 at 111.5 ypg. I’m also watching because there is a pretty good chance that it will be the last game at Georgia for both Moreno and QB Matt Stafford. A win would give Georgia 10 or more victories for the sixth time in the last seven seasons under Mark Richt. His eight-year record would be 82-22. TB’s Pick: Georgia 31, Michigan State 24.

9. Holiday Bowl: No. 13 Oklahoma State (9-3) vs. No. 17 Oregon (9-3), Dec. 30: This one should light up the scoreboard as Oregon is No. 7 in scoring offense (41.92 ppg) while Oklahoma State is No. 8 (41.58). Oklahoma State has one of the best offensive trios in the country in quarterback Zac Robinson (2,735 passing), RB Kendall Hunter (126.5 ypg) and WR Dez Bryant (109.42 ypg). Oregon’s offense, led by coordinator Chip Kelly, exploded in the final two games with Arizona and Oregon State, scoring 120 points. TB’s Pick: Oklahoma State 35, Oregon 33.

10. GMAC Bowl: Tulsa (10-3) vs. No. 22 Ball State (12-1), Jan. 6: This one kicks at 8 p.m. and might go to midnight. Tulsa is second only to Oklahoma in scoring at 47.38 points per game. In Donald Johnson the Golden Hurricane has a quarterback who averages 8.79 yards per play. Only Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is better at 9.4 ypg. Ball State was 12-0 before losing to Buffalo in the MAC Championship game. Junior quarterback Nate Davis (3,446 yards passing, 26 TD) is the real deal. TB’s Pick: Tulsa 35, Ball State 30.

FIVE OTHER STORY LINES WORTH WATCHING

11. Orange Bowl, Jan. 1: The ACC has lost eight straight BCS games. Virginia Tech (9-4) will try to end that streak against No. 12 Cincinnati (11-2), the Big East champ. Virginia Tech 24, Cincinnati 21.

12. Music City Bowl, Dec. 31: Vanderbilt’s appearance against Boston College (9-4) will be the Commodores’ first bowl since 1982 and only the third in school history. Vanderbilt’s bowl record is 1-1-1. The only win came in the 1955 Gator Bowl. The Commodores tied Texas Tech 6-6 in the 1974 Peach Bowl and lost to Air Force 36-28 in the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. Boston College 28, Vanderbilt 20.

13. Liberty Bowl, Jan. 2: Kentucky has been playing football since 1881. The Wildcats have never won three straight bowl games in their history. Rich Brooks can win his third straight bowl game at Kentucky by beating East Carolina (9-4), the Conference USA champ. Kentucky 17, East Carolina 14.

14. International Bowl, Jan. 3: The nation’s leading rusher is Connecticut’s Donald Brown (151.83 ypg), who squares off against Buffalo (8-5), the MAC champ. Buffalo coach Turner Gill has had a tough offseason and may have something to prove. Buffalo 24, Connecticut 17.

15. Papajohns.com Bowl, Dec. 29: At midseason neither N.C. State (6-6) nor Rutgers (7-5) thought they would be in a bowl game. N.C. State closed with four straight wins, including dominating performances over North Carolina (41-10) and Miami (38-28). Rutgers started 1-5 and finished the season with a six-game winning streak, scoring 231 points (46.2 avg.) in their last five games. N.C. State 27, Rutgers 20.

As for all the racism talk at AU.

Turner Gill was 7-17 in his first 2 years at Buffalo and that’s playing in the MAC.

Here are my 2008-09 college football bowl rankings.

First, the games that I will actually watch:

(1) BCS Title Game, Florida vs. Oklahoma. Which conference really is better, the SEC or BIg XII? This year, we will actually know. Gators 38, Sooners 28.

(2) Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State vs. Texas. I still believe that the Longhorns got jobbed by the Big XII 3-way tie-breaker rules, and that UT, not OU, should be playing the BCS title. However, I’ll tune into watch this game as much out of perverse curiosity——will it be the third BCS train wreck in a row for the Buckeyes? Longhorns 42, Buckeyes 21.

(3) Sugar Bowl, Alabama vs. Utah. This match-up has only one marquee name, but it definitely has the “Rocky” factor in Utah. Remember, though, Rocky lost his first title fight: Crimson Tide 28, Utah 21.

Second, games that I will watch for a quarter or two:

(4) Cotton Bowl, Mississippi vs. Texas Tech. Another SEC vs Big XII match-up, but with the BIg XII Red Raiders heavily favored. Color me curious: Was Texas Tech really that good, and how much has the Ole Miss program really improved. This game could be an eye-opener for both. Red Raiders 35, Rebels 24.

(5) Rose Bowl, Penn State vs. Southern Cal. Again, my perverse curiosity will get the better of my Rose Bowl aversion. Will the Nittany Lions make a game of it, or will the Pac-10 representative again dismantle the team from the Big Ten? Could be the first time in history that the Lions get fed to the Trojans at the coliseum: Trojans 34, Nittany Lions 17.

(6) Chick-fil-A (Peach) Bowl, Georgia Tech vs. LSU. How far has Tech come, how far has LSU fallen? How will the Bayou Bengals defend against the Jackets’ new triple option offense? For a secondary bowl, this one raises some interesting questions. Yellow Jackets 31, Tigers 27.

Third, those games for which I will check the scores while they’re still being played:

(7) Capital One (Citrus) Bowl,. Georgia vs. Michigan State. Can the Dawgs pull their heads together and defeat the Spartans (who the Dawgs clearly outclass on paper), or have the Dawgs completely lost their will to live? Dawgs 31, Spartans 21. Come on, Georgia! Get up, and fight!

Fourth, all the rest.

Sorry, guys, but I won’t watch the rest, and wouldn’t attend any of them if you handed me a free pair of game tickets, prepaid airline fare, and a room at the Ritz-Carlton. Long live the Playoffs!

By Big 12 South Will Dominate the Bowls

December 19, 2008 9:23 AM | Link to this

OK will S-T-E-A-M-R-O-L-L UF.

Here’s what Tony said on December 8: 1. Florida gets the early edge because of defense: You will hear over and over in the coming weeks that Oklahoma was the first team to ever score more than 60 points in five straight games. But who were they scoring those 60 points against? Here are the national defensive rankings for those five Oklahoma opponents: Nebraska (66), Texas Tech (72), Oklahoma State (86), Missouri (99), Texas A&M (113). The best defense in the Big 12 this season was Texas at No. 50. The best defense Oklahoma faced all season was No. 2 TCU, which held Oklahoma to its lowest point total of the season (35, which was matched by Texas). You can counter this argument by saying the offenses were just THAT GOOD in the Big 12. My point is that Oklahoma just hasn’t seen a defense like Florida’s, which is ranked No. 9 (279.31 ypg).

You see folks. All the stats are BS. The fact is those Big 12 offenses are really THAT good. OK scored points like that against teams in the Big 12.

Tony, likes to give you all the BS “reasons” and stats on why the Big 12 is so over-rated because of those “awful Big 12 defenses.” These are the same people trying to convince us that UF has faced all those “tough” defenses in the SEC, and that UF has faced “much tougher or higher-ranked defenses this year than OK.”

Blah, Blah, Blah. Same SEC delusional thinking.

Look folks, the Big 12 South is THE toughest division is college football. Period.

So, when OK DESTROYS UF, it will finally put an end to the delusion of SEC supremacy. Since Tony, ALWAYS forgets to mention, according to AP Poll(and most other polls), 4 of the Top 13 come from one single division, the Big 12 South. Of the same Top 13, from the SEC only UF & Bama make the list.

By the way, lets just double check two of Tony’s more memroable predcitions for his SEC alma mater:

September 26: GA 21 Bama 17 October 31: GA 37 UF 34

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Like I said, DELUSIONAL !!!!

As for Ole Miss beating TxTech, thats just more of the same stupid SEC delusion. That game will be a BLOWOUT by TxTech.

TCU to beat Boise State?? TCU has the nations #2 defense. Are you joking?? Just look at that TCU schedule. LOLOLOLOLOLOL.

It will be intersting to see if all of Tony’s SEC bowl victory predictions are anywhere near theh final results. Frankly, I doubt it.

By What?

December 19, 2008 9:33 AM | Link to this

Tony, unless there’s a tragedy, the Rose Bowl will not be JoePa’s last game. The man is healthier at 82 than most 42 year olds. Watch the game because it will be the 2nd best game of the bowl season (outside the NC game). Penn State will win this game for one reason…..because no one outside of State College thinks they can….and that’s when they play their best.

I thought you might this story from last night’s AP wire interesting … .

Gogue made final call on Chizik hire

“AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn University President Jay Gogue said he made the decision to hire football coach Gene Chizik, and he said he did it without seeking or receiving input from school trustees or other boosters.

“Gogue told The Birmingham News in a story Thursday that the ex-Iowa State coach was the only candidate recommended by athletic director Jay Jacobs. The hiring has drawn criticism by some Auburn fans because Chizik was only 5-19 in two seasons at Iowa State. Gogue said he was ‘somewhat surprised’ by the negative reaction.

“Gogue said he wasn’t involved in interviewing any other candidate before meeting with Chizik and Jacobs Saturday in Memphis.

“The president also instructed Jacobs to get permission from a school’s athletic director before interviewing a coach.”

The SEC wins the Title again in Florida and improves to 13-4 in BCS games. The ACC is a pathetic 1-9 in BCS games. Those are the stats folks and they speak for themselves. The reason why the SEC is the best conference is that win more than any other conference. Deal with it. Its not going to end anytime soon wither. Dont worry ACC fans basketball season is gearing up.

One interesting note: Georgia has the best SEC bowl record over the past 11 years at 9-2. If the Dawgs beat Michigan State, that would be an unbelievable bowl record. Additionally, CMR would be 6-2 in bowls, and, including SEC championship games, 8-3 in the post season. Quite an accomplisment, especially when you look at the bowl records of other SEC teams, plus Ohio State and Michigan.

Bowl records by conference last 10 years

SEC: 44-30 (59.4%) Big12: 33-32 (50.7%) PAC10: 20-20 (50%) BigEast: 19-18 (51.4%) ACC: 24-28 (46.1%) Big10: 28-38 (42.4%)

… then just the BCS records… SEC: 11-4 (73.3%), 4 BCS Titles PAC10: 8-4 (66.7%), 1 BCS Title BigEast: 6-4 (60%), 1 BCS Title Big10: 8-8 (50%), 1 BCS Title Big12: 6-8 (42.9%), 2 BCS Titles ACC: 1-9 (10%), 1 BCS Title

…the answer is obvious no matter how you break down the stats. The SEC has been the dominant conference in college football over the last decade. Four national titles in 10 years and another on the way.

Not jealousy, just been to Jax too many times and been around the lizards when they win or lose they are VERY poor winners and also VERY poor losers. I have been to every GA-FLA game since 1964 except for one (in Vietnam), I have seen more UGA victories than losses.

Michigian State will not be able to stop the UGA offense, sorry it will be the last game for Stafford and Moreno in a UGA uniform. I expext they will put on quite a show for the yankees from the “wimpy ten”.

azcat225——I didn’t say that I believed Auburn’s president, Jay Gogue. I just said that I thought you and others who were following the controversy might last night’s AP wire story “interesting.”

I think the story is very revealing in one important detail. If you believe anything in the story, Chizik was the only head coach candidate presented to the university president by the athletics director. To my way of thinking, that’s not much of a “choice.”

Forgive me but I’ve been overseas since August. When I left, Georgia was ranked no. 1 and and it was pretty much a given around here that they’d steamroll to the national championship game. Now I pick up the paper and swear that it said Ga. has a 9-3 record. How can a team play in the title game with 3 losses? OMG! I just found out that one of those losses was to Georgia Tech! What on earth happened, fellow Bulldog fans. Did we give a game effort but just barely lose three hard luck squeakers?

What happens next season when Coach Saban enters the 3d year of his scheduled rebuilding. Bama should finally show some improvement then. Hey, and what if Coach Johnson’s offense works out all right over at Tech, then maybe the YellowJackets can come close to competing with us next year.

When you look at the final bowl tallies (including BCS games)… SEC: 44-30 (59.4%) Big12: 33-32 (50.7%) PAC10: 20-20 (50%) BigEast: 19-18 (51.4%) ACC: 24-28 (46.1%) Big10: 28-38 (42.4%)

Four national titles in 10 years and another on the way

Oh and the SEC record vs the ACC last ten years when

swimdawg68——Thank you for your service. One of my older brothers dropped out of college, joined the Marine Corps and volunteered for two tours in Vietnam. He came home (thank God) and finished college, but he was forever changed by the experience. I have nothing but respect for those who served, and nothing but scorn for those who dodged.

Regarding the Florida-Georgia game from 1964 to the present, please let me gently correct your recollection. If you have attended all but one Florida-Georgia game during the past 44 years, you have witnessed a very evenly matched series during that time. Over the last 44 games, the series record stands at 23 wins for Florida, 20 for Georgia and 1 tie.

BTW, if you share a beer and a story or two with a Gator, you might make a friend or two. The jerks you may have met in the Gator Bowl parking lot are no more representative of the University of Florida and its alumni than the barking and drunken adolescents who I have met are representative of the University of Georgia and its alumni. If you want respect, sometimes you have to be willing to give it, without demanding it in return. Good sportsmanship and good manners are contagious. Let it start with us.

RickyJ4PREZofUGA,

You are kidding, right? The SEC “actually play tough non-conference games”.

Let’s go to the actually results. SEC OOC games vs BCS conference teams, 6-9. That’s 15 games against ‘quality’ OOC opponents. The ACC was 15-8 vs BCS OCC opponents. That’s right, the ACC won as many OOC games against BCS teams as the SEC played. That (and the parity in the ACC, read ‘they beat up on each other’) is why the ACC has 10 bowl participants.

The ACC may not have an elite team, but it is deeper than any conference in the nation.

We neither need nor desire your assistance in stirring the pot with our SEC rivals, the Bulldawgs of Athens. If and when we want to insult Dawg fans, we are capable of doing so without your help.

There are many of us bloggers who enjoy trading perspectives on the best sport in the world with the fans of our rival institutions. Sometimes, rival fans see what we do not, and that makes it more interesting for those fans who actually care about the X’s and O’s. In order for that to happen, a certain amount of civility must exist in the blogs and among the bloggers. If you could elevate the level of your own commentary from insults and name-calling to pointed questions and factually-supported contrary opinions, you too could be part of the solution, rather than part of the nastiness. I’m just hoping my Cats have a good showing in their first bowl in ten years. I’m afraid the Cougs are still going to be angry after the beatdown laid on them by their bitter cross-state rivals, the Utes.

Speaking of the Utes, I hope the Sugar Bowl is a good game but it’s probably going to be a repeat of last year’s pants-down spanking. That depends entirely on the Tide’s mindset. I recall a Fiesta Bowl years ago when Louisville laid a whuppin’ on the Tide, in large part because the Cardinals weren’t taken seriously pregame by the Red Elephants.

And, just like last year, I will be turning off the sound whenever Fox is broadcasting a college football game. Can’t wait for ESPN to take over the BCS bowl broadcasts.

What indication is there that OU is this juggernaut and is going to maul UF?

They have gotten their a*******es handed to them in 2 of their last 4 BCS bowl games. They lost to Boise St, and when they lost to LSU in the title game, everyone though OU was going to blow them out.

It’s going to be more of the same this season. UF will win, but not because of offense or defense. UF’s special teams, specifically Brandon James is going to be the difference maker. OU has struggled covering kicks all season (remember the Texas game?) and UF has thrived taking advantage of short fields because of big returns and turnovers. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if James has 2 or more 50+ yard kick returns.

OU will keep it interesting for a while, but UF is just as good, if not better offensively than any team in the Big 12 south and OU hasn’t stopped any of them. UF is a more complete and well rounded team than OU. UF will make enough stops defensively to distance themselves in the 2nd half.

UF 52 - OU 27

By the way I am not a gator fan, nor a homer. There is a reason OU is 0-4 in their last 4 BCS games and it will show again come Jan. 8th why they belong in the same category with Ohio St.!!!!

Azcat225,

I can’t see us laying a whooping on Utah. I can see us winning but not a blowout like UGA vs HAWAII. I think we will take the bowl game very seriously. I remember that Louisville azzwhooping in the fiesta bowl in Gene Stallings first season. We didn’t respect the opponent, weren’t into the game at all and got blasted. I don’t know if Gene Stallings even lost another bowl game after that and I do know we never got smoked again in a bowl game after that embarrassment.

I think Utah is a lot tougher than what people give them credit for. If you look at the WAC they have been 5-0 and either 5-1 or 4-1 against the pac 10 the last 2 years. I think their top 4 or 5 teams are better than the top 4 or 5 teams in the Pac10(USC the obvious exception)and the Big East, 2 bcs conferences. I do know utah is either 1-0 or 2-0 in bcs games so I think we better take them seriously. Going solely by the bowl success they’ve had over the last several years and the head to head against other bcs conferences I think the WAC is underrated, especially relative to the pac10 and big east.

OU Boomer Sooner,

Huh! FLorida got “killed” by Michigan last year. I think they lost by 6 pts or so. That’s not getting killed. Getting killed is taking an @zzwhooping 48-27 by West Virginia or 55-19 @zzwhooping by USC. That is what getting killed is. And while Boise state is a good team they are certainly not a great team and a bcs conference champion should have no business losing to them. For Pete’s sake take a look at who they play during the regular season. UGA exposed them with a blowout when they came to Athens 2 years ago and then blew out their conference champion in Hawaii last year. No exscuse for losing to Boise.

OU Boomer Sooner,

UF got killed last year against Michigan?

They lost by 1 TD!!!! That game was back and forth the whole game. Michigan’s D stood up on the last possesion, but that game was not dominated by either team.

Why was Jason White’s hand broken? Because of the beating he took in that game!!!

The SEC as a whole may be down this year, but that doesn’t mean UF isn’t the cream of the crop. You’re basis that UF isn’t that good was that they lost to Michigan by a TD. OU lost to West Virginia in a BLOWOUT by 3+ TD’s!!!!

I have seen this movie before and know how it ends, I have the d@mn t-shirt. This year’s edition of OU is no different, accompany that with Murray and Granger being out and that adds up to another humiliating loss for OU and the SEC’s 5th National Title in the BCS Era. Even in a down year for the conference, the best team (conference champion) in the SEC can go toe to toe with anybody in the country, you’ll see in a couple of weeks :)

Dont’f forget one small detail that might make a BIG difference:

Bob Stoops was the Defensive Coordinator at Florida under Spurrier 1996-98.

One the biggest reason OU drubbed TxTech is that Leach was an assitant for Stopps at OU for several years, and Stoops KNEW how Leach works on offense. He knew EXACTLY how to defend against Leach’s offense.

Stoops might have a good idea how to defend UF’s spread offense.

OU Boomer Sooner——Last time I checked, the BCS had ranked Oklahoma number one, with a rather significant boost from the six BCS computer rating services. You may want to check that out in light of your post above.

Good luck. We look forward to hosting you and your team in Dolphin Stadium on January 8th.

ou boomer sooner,

Are you living in an alternate reality? Why are you talking so much about UFs game LAST YEAR? It was last year and if you’re going to say Michigan SHOULDA won by more well that’s just your opinion. One can just as easily make the argument that UF shoulda win if only Tebow was healthy, if only he hadn’t thrown that int, shoulda, coulda, woulda is a 2 way street. That’s just silly. I guess you’re also gonna say OU shoulda beat Texas if Shipley hadn’t run a kickoff back for a td. Your logic is just asinine.

It’s funny to hear an OU fan talk about other teams only getting in to title games because of the computers. Especially when you consider that the only reason OU has made it to it’s last 2 NC games was because of the computers. When it was obvious to everyone else they were a flawed and overrated team.

You’re logic is flawed to say the least. I am not unwilling to listen or reason because someone likes a team outside of the SEC, but you shouldn’t enter a battle if you have no ammunition. OU hasn’t proven much over the last 5 years other than they can win the Big 12 and then subsequently take a beating when they step out of conference!

Old GT Nut,

That information would be relevant, well, except for the fact that Urban Meyer is UF’s coach now, and that team in no way, shape, or form, resembles what it was under Steve Spurrier. Stoops has no connection to Meyer. I don’t see how you’re insight give OU any advantage at all?

truth to the ou folks, Why did i bring up Michigan last year? Cause OU was brought up for the past 4 years

Who cares that TX beat OU this year, did i mention Ole Miss beat FL, AT HOME? No i didn’t

Fellas we can speculate all we want, but ripping apart OU cause of their appearance in bowls for the past 4 years only gives them motivation, their losing streak has to end eventually, at least for my sake i hope so, hahahaha

OLD GT NUT - I couldn’t have said it better myself!!!

Old GT Nut——I have nothing but respect for Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops. The Gators owe their 1996 national championship nearly as much to Stoops as they do to the Evil Genius.

Stoops may have some insight into Florida’s spread offense, but not because he was the Gator defensive coordinator from 1996 to 1998. That was two head coaches ago, and the Gators’ offensive scheme has changed twice in the last seven years.

While there are common elements between Steve Spurrier’s Fun ‘n’ Gun and Urban Meyer’s spread offense, the current offense is much more option-oriented than anything Stoops saw while he was In Gainesville. And Stoops never witnessed a Gator quarterback who was anything like Tim Tebow, who adds an entirely different dimension with his size and power running ability. The offense the Gators run in 2008 is a lot more like the Oklahoma State offense, except the Gators’ talent level is twice that of the OSU Cowboys.

Searles is to be named “Auburn’s Head Coach in Waiting”. He will be driving to Auburn at an unknown time to avoid the crush of obnoxious, unruly, drunk fans who may want to heckle him prior to him coaching a single play on the plains. Note to those fans: He recently had brush bars installed on his SUV. Teflon coated.

Atlanta Gator, Merry Christmas and good luck in the NC game. You mean you wouldn’t take a free ride to any of the other bowl games? Even if they throw in an Elliot Spitzer call girl? Or a ride in GM’s corporate Prius? I think after this season a lot of the bowl games will disappear and it will get back to teams that deserve to be there, aka, 8+ wins or more, none of this six wins and eligible.

Not Buying what OU is Selling

Don’t put words in my mouth, yes OU was placed in title games because of computers, very obvious!!!

Turning around and claiming your the best team in the country because a computer says so is what i was referring to, but we can’t do anything about the system we play in so what are you going to do?

By Not buying what OU is selling

December 19, 2008 3:13 PM | Link to this

Seriously, someone explain to me what Stoops being an assistant at UF during Spurrier’s time during the 90’s has anything to do with this year’s game?

Mike Leach was an asst under Stoops and they play each other every season, thus the familiarity.

Stoops has never coached with Meyer, and UF has never played OU with these set of coaches in place. So how does that give an advantage to Stoops?

UF’s offense under Spurrier was completely different than it is now under Meyer.

The only thing in common is that they both spread the field, which is pretty much what everyone in division I is doing these days.

OU Boomer Sooner,

We could have that argument all day long about who REALLY is the best, lol.

The system sucks, I think all would agree on that. But I don’t make a habit of arguing over the national champ not being the best team. It gets boring and tiring, unfortunately the current system is all we have. The would be matchups of a playoff system are incredible to think about…oh well, back to reality, lol

Merry Christmas to you and yours, gdawg~zoo.

No Spitzer girls for me, sir. Can’t afford them, and they would probably complicate this simple Gator’s life. I hope you’re right about the number of bowls, but they do seem to proliferate like cockroaches.

I’ll tease you more about this season’s Florida-Georgia game after the “seasonal” bloggers clear out in January. According to the terms of Cuz’s Jacksonville Convention, I believe the Gators now hold the upper hand for the next 10 months. = )

In the mean time, good luck to your Dawgs in Orlando. Remember, winning heals all wounds, and a 10-win season is still nothing at which to scoff.

shane #1, I still support Auburn 100%, just did`nt agree with their selection of HC. The key is who CGC can get in as asst. coaches. Rodney Garner is not COMING and I doubt if Searls leaves UGA. We need an offensive Gru, who can put some points on the board. The defense will always be consistent , but staying on the field most of the time as 2007, 2008 want get the job done. Auburn was fourth in the nation in recruiting until this tangle, now we are not on the charts…In my opinion, along with many former players, believe Pat Dye had ant input on exit of CTT and entrance of CGC. He has strong ties to Colonial Bank(Bobby Lowder) as a member of Board of Directors…Still a WAR EAGLE

OU Boomer Sooner——No rational SEC fan was claiming regional, conference or team superiority because of some computer ratings. However, if you would care to review the objective, un-massaged statistics, may I refer you to the 11:05 AM post of “statsdon’tlie” above? I think the conferences’ BCS and general bowl results over the last decade speak for themselves.

It may be debatable who the best team and conference are in 2008, but over the last 10 years, the conference records are clear and unmistakable. As for the Gators and Sooners, I’m wiling to let them play the game. Pregame trash talk is cheap.

Atl Gator, thank you sir, you do have the smack talking rights for the next 10 months according to the JCC. I should have taken advantage of it last year. 9” of snow up here today with more on the way Sunday morning. I’ll be happy with the 10 wins with all the hurt we had this year. And if Stafford and Moreno go, well somebody else will step in and take control. Maybe have a Tee Martin year.

OU Boomer Sooner, IMO the Big 12 was the better conference this year. I really enjoyed watching all the shoot outs and the outstanding QB play that you guys had. It will be one interesting game. If OU can pressure Tebow and control the TOP then you guys will have a chance. If you keep it close look out for Tebow to knock OU out.

gdawg~zoo——-Getting what you wish for is a funny thing.

If Stafford jumps to the NFL, which is what all the commentators seem to expect, the Dawgs may be better off. Stafford has the bigger arm, but never seemed to exhibit the big-game leadership when the chips were down. There always seemed to be a mistake at an unfortunate time … but he did hammer home the 2007 win over the Gators. Cox may represent an upgrade in QB leadership skills, if not in the caliber of his cannon. Cox has potential to be UGA’s “Tee Martin.”

As always, 2009 will be an interesting season. I fully expect that LSU will be competitive again, and Tennessee should show some improvement. I’m withholding judgment regarding Auburn until I hear more about their recruiting class and new assistants.

BCS Champs Again, I’m scared to death you may be right: LSU may (not will) beat Georgia Tech. Another LSU fan boasted that your defensive line is big, strong, and athletic - therefore, the Tigers win. The outcome, though, will really depend on Tech’s readiness, including ability to hold onto the ball. If the Jackets don’t fumble, or throw a pass to the wrong team, LSU won’t be able to stop ‘em.

TechCryBaby——No slight intended to this year’s Chick-fil-A Bowl. Other than than the recent Florida-Miami and Miami-LSU match-ups, it’s the best “Peach” Bowl in recent memory, which was the point of my post. Please note that I did not rate many bowls ahead of Tech’s … which supports my post’s bottom line: we need a Division I playoff, rather than more meaningless bowls for teams that barely have winning records.

As for the “football factory” crack, as a Florida alumnus, I don’t have to accept it. Oklahoma, maybe. Florida’s academic credentials are equal to, and, in many respects, better than those of Tech. National Merit Scholars, average SAT, entering freshman GPA——whichever you want to compare. It’s also three times the size of Tech, with three times the number of academic programs. Florida graduates 20% more of its football players than Tech (68% vs. 48%), and has not been so much as accused of an NCAA violation in 20 years (football or otherwise). Tech, as you are well aware, has had far more recent NCAA problems, including severely compromising its academic integrity to sustain its football program. By those standards, Tech has been much more of a “football factory” than Florida, but also a far less successful one.

People who live in glass houses, my friend, should not throw stones.

By heeldawg

December 20, 2008 9:47 AM | Link to this

First, my predictions:

Gators continue SEC dominance over Oklahoma, as they actually play both defense and offense. Florida 45, Oklahoma 24.

Tech will annihilate LSU, as the Bayou Bengals have trouble passing the ball (Tech’s defensive weakness is the pass)and have trouble stopping the run (uh oh…). I predict a 41-17 Jacket win as the defending national champs fall HARD.

The Dawgs will win over MSU as the Spartans have trouble with the Georgia skill players on offense and the Georgia defense plays better against a more “traditional” running game. Dawgs win 45-28.

And, no, Tech fans, this is not Georgia’s “last major bowl game in a while.” Games are won and lost in the trenches, and the Dawgs return most of their linemen on both sides of the ball next season. Look for improvement next year as Georgia hits the field with a renewed sense of purpose and the weight of impossible expectations lifted.

BTW, TechCry Baby, Atlanta Gator’s right—UF is no football factory, and has as many (or more) academically solid students as Tech. Not a valid criticsm AT ALL.

USC has talent galore and is the “on paper” choice. I think it will be close because it will be physical. I give it to Joe because of the intangibles. But certainly USC could win this one. I have no dog in this fight - just a hunch. Even Tony has USC winning by only 7 so, I may not be too far off. It is quite hilarious that Mr. sec-homer is picking the ACC to win 90% of their bowl games (including both over his beloved sec). Pardon me while I take a moment to laugh my arse off. It is a little disconcerting, though, since Mr. sec-homer has a horrible record of picking games in general, and especially ACC games. The bottom line is this… the sec was probably the weakest it has ever been (had a couple of good teams at the top), and the ACC was strong top to bottom, putting an all time record 10 teams in the bowls and beating the sec 6-4. Tony, don’t you think it about time for you to admit that the sec just plain sucked this year (to chan gailey proportions) and that the ACC was much better than you ever imagined? Here’s the list of bowl games I’m watching this year:

  1. BCS championship game
  2. There is no #2, as I will boycott ALL of the other bowl games until a play-off system is develpoed.

All of these bowl games are meaningless exhibition games…win and you go home, lose and you go home. I just have no interests whatsoever in exhibition games.

I have absolutely no doubt that a play-off system is coming, it’s just a matter of when. I encourage all fans to boycott the current bowl system. Deny the networks the numbers they use to get sponsors to pay through the nose for these exhibition games. As with most things…it’s about the money. If nobody watches, the money dries up, and the current system will die.

Support a college playoff; BOYCOTT the BCS exhibition bowls!

OK then.

Wow… apparently its “news” to the ajc that black football and basketball players scored less on the sat’s and graduated less % of students.
DUH!! Way to point out the obvious!
Now can we get to the REAL important topics like how blacks in GA, AL, and Mississippi are spreading HIV like wildfire!??

To the dude who wants us to boycott all Bowl games:

Sorry man, I just can’t do it. This past Saturday I watched WVU/NC, Wisconsin/FSU followed by most of the UM/CU game, AND i DON’T HAVE A ROOTING INTEREST FOR ANY OF THOSE TEAMS! I just love college football. It’s a disease that I, along w/ millions of others, have that I can’t get rid of, much to the delight of ESPN and the ad companies out there.

I’M THE REASON WHY THEIR WILL NEVER BE A PLAYOFF AND I JUST CAN’T HELP IT!!!!!!!!!
