Let’s take time out for our annual ACC, SEC Awards
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With the hubbub going on with the coaching carousel, we haven’t had a chance to hand out our post-season awards in the SEC and ACC. So let’s take a break and honor the folks who made this a season we will always remember. We’ll finish the week with our Bowl Preview on Friday and then take a break for Christmas.
If you disagree with any of these ACC or SEC awards, then give me yours.
ACC AWARDS
Offensive Player of the Year: Could it be anyone other than Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer? Dwyer was concerned that he would not be playing a conventional tailback position in Paul Johnson’s new offense. He’s not concerned any more. Dwyer became a big-time player with 1,328 yards rushing, which led the ACC. Dwyer was the only player who was a unanimous selection on the All-ACC offense. Honorable mention: Russell Wilson, QB, N.C. State; Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina; C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson.
Defensive Player of the Year: DE Everette Brown, Florida State. Brown, a junior, was virtually unblockable in the second half of the season. He finished third in the nation with 12.5 sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss. A redshirt junior, Brown is projected to be a first-round draft choice if he comes out so Seminole fans had better enjoy him while you can in the Champs Sports Bowl on Dec. 27. Honorable Mention: Mark Herzlich, LB, Boston College; Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest; Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech.
Rookie of the Year: Russell Wilson, QB, N.C. State. Wilson, a redshirt freshman from Richmond, Va., became the first freshman ever to be named first-team All-ACC quarterback. He was brilliant in the second half of the season and enters the Papajohns.com Bowl with a string of 226 passes without an interception. Honorable Mention: Darren Evans, RB, Virginia Tech; Jacory Harris, QB, Miami.
Coach of the Year: This one’s easy. Paul Johnson brought an entire new offensive system to Georgia Tech from Navy and many wondered if he could implement it in just one season. The Yellow Jackets went 9-3 and beat Georgia and finished ahead of Georgia in the final BCS standings. Johnson will get a lot of votes for national coach of the year. Honorable Mention: Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech; Jeff Jagodzinski, Boston College. Beamer caught a lot of heat after Virginia Tech’s 27-22 loss to East Carolina in the opener. He did one of his better coaching jobs to lead the Hokies to another ACC championship. Boston College was picked to finish fourth in its division without Matt Ryan. Coach Jags won the division despite inconsistent play at quarterback.
Game of the Year: Georgia Tech 45, Georgia 42. Nobody gave Georgia Tech a chance when the Yellow Jackets trailed 28-12 at halftime in Athens. But Tech came back to win and snap the Bulldogs’ seven-game winning streak. It also put a big shot of life back into what had become a stale rivalry. Honorable mention: North Carolina 28, Miami 24. What looked like a winning touchdown pass for Miami bounced off of Kayne Farquharson into the arms of UNC’s Tremaine Goddard on the last play of the game.
SEC AWARDS
Offensive Player of the Year: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida. Tebow didn’t win this second straight Heisman but nobody did more for his team than Tebow did for Florida this season. After Florida’s 31-30 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 27 Tebow vowed that no one would play harder than he would for the rest of the season. From then on Tebow was a force of nature. With Florida down 20-17 in the SEC championship game against No. 1 Alabama, Tebow led his team to a 31-20 win with the sheer force of his will. Now Florida is playing for its second national championship in three seasons. Honorable mention: Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno led the SEC in rushing (1,338 yards) behind an offensive line that had to be patched together all season because of injuries. When Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin was healthy, he was always the best player on the field.
Defensive Player of the Year: Eric Berry, DB, Tennessee. Berry wasn’t just the best defensive player in the SEC, he was the best defender in the nation this season. Even with Tennessee in the throes of a losing season, Berry was a warrior each and every week. He should have won the Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s best defensive back (It went to Malcolm Jenkins of Ohio State). He had seven interceptions for an SEC-record 265 return yards this season. After only two seasons Berry owns the SEC career record with 487 interception return yards. Honorable mention: Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes was not only the best player on Florida’s defense, he was the Gators’ inspirational leader as well; Alabama NT Terrence Cody had an incredible impact on the Crimson Tide defense this season.
Rookie of the Year: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia. This was a tough call but Green, a true freshman from Summerville, S.C., just had a magnificent rookie season. Green caught 55 passes for 951 yards and led the SEC in receiving yardage per game (79.2). For a freshman the guy runs great routes and simply catches everything. If he stays healthy, he could be the best receiver in Georgia history by the time he is through. Honorable mention: Wide receiver Julio Jones was one of the most hyped players in the country when he arrived at Alabama. Jones more than lived up to the hype with 46 catches for 723 yards on a team that didn’t throw the ball that much.
Coach of the Year: Nick Saban, Alabama. Truth be told, Alabama is at least one year ahead of schedule in terms of being an SEC power again. But after a tough first season in 2007, everybody at Alabama bought into what Saban was selling in 2008. Alabama was a tough, resourceful team that got better in the areas where they had to get better in order to compete for the championship. There were still some gaps in talent but Saban and his staff maximized every ounce of ability they had on this team. Honorable mention: Houston Nutt, Ole Miss. We said before the season started that because of Nutt Ole Miss would be the most improved team in the SEC. The Rebels went 3-9 last season and were 8-4 with a win over Florida in 2008. Ole Miss is headed to the Cotton Bowl to play Texas Tech.
Game of the Year: Florida 31, Alabama 20 (SEC championship game, Dec. 6): Both teams clinched their divisions early and so there was a lot of hype of this first-ever SEC championship game pitting 1 vs. 2. The game more than lived up to the hype as Florida rallied from a 20-17 deficit in the fourth quarter to win. Honorable Mention: Ole Miss 31, Florida 30 (Sept. 27 in Gainesville). Tim Tebow was stopped short of a first down to stop Florida’s final drive and the Gators suffered their only loss of the season. Arkansas 31, LSU 30 (Nov. 28 in Little) Rock. Casey Dick threw the winning touchdown pass with only 22 seconds left.

AND, I have season tickets to both UGA and Clemson, so I had a double horrifying year! Too bad they could not play each other to see who was really worse!

SEC disappointment of the year: Willie Martinez. Giving up 40 or more points three times. Blowing a big half time lead over Tech. Allowing Alabama to run on us in the first half like we weren’t there………………………………………………. Maybe its the talent………………….Maybe the scheme…………..?????? Maybe it’s coaching. I think CMR will fix it…………………………………….or ?

Great awards Tony. I agree up and down the line.
Tech, Bama and Ole Miss are the three big surprise teams. A bowl win should ensure GT is top-10 going into 2009, and Bama should be top-5.
Even as a GT fan, the one that is most intriguing and under the radar is Ole Miss. Nutt stepped into a great situation as Orgeron left them loaded with talent, he just couldn’t coach them. This is gonna be a fascinating team to watch in 2009 as they return 16-17 starters and have a very friendly schedule. They get Bama, UT, Arkansas and LSU at home, while playing MSU, Vandy and the War Chiziks on the road. That should make USC their toughest road game and a GREAT shot to go 6-2 or even 7-1. I believe they also don’t play anyone worth noting OOC.

Tony -
ACC- Agree with everything EXCEPT no mention at all of the stunning job that David Cutcliffe did at Duke. For coaxing 4 wins out of his team (and being competitive in most others) the guy did a whale of a job.Duke is relevant again and that has to count for something.
SEC- Tak off the Red and Black homer glasses and you will see that Julio Jones deserves the nod over A.J. Green. Green is good,I’ll agree. But Jones has more maturity and mental toughness.
Other than that,pretty fair,I’d say…

I will have to go with Auburn as biggest joke of the year. Lets see: -fired a OC after just 4 or 5 games -fired a coach after winning 85 games in 10 yr or let a coach resign and pay him $5m (you pick) -Hires a coach with a 10 game losing streak. -Doesn’t hire one of the hottest coaches because he’s black, he’s wife’s white or he’s not in the auburn family (was Tubberville in or out of the family?)
I think everyone in the country will agree on the biggest joke (not even close).

Have to agree that Auburn rather than UGA is the bust of the year in the SEC.
Nothing Auburn did after that 3-2 victory over MSU made any sense, and their recent actions have only become more embarrassing.

Except for UF and Bama every SEC (Sorry Except in Conference) would finish .500 or worse in any other decent conference (big 10, Pac 10, Big 12, ACC, Big East). Large stadiums full of people who are more interested in the social scene do not equate to better programs. Herschel, Bo, and the Bear are never coming back and it is time for those of you with the family trees with no branches to face the facts. UF is going to go down the tubes as soon as Meyer’s kids finish high school and he gets to go to ND. Pray Saban doesnt get busted for cheating because then yall will really be in trouble.

Not even a mention for Peria Jerry, defensive tackle for Ole Miss?? He led the conference with 17 tackles for a loss and added 6 qb sacks on the season. He was All-SEC and named to 3 All-American teams.

And remember Tech fans a blind squirrel finds a nut 1 out of 8 times. And a 3 point victory doesn’t constitute a @ss beating. Tony, you left out that the ACC ended the season ranked as the #1 conference in the Sagarin ratings, ahead of the overrated and overhyped sec. The ACC was the first conference in history to send 10 teams to bowl games. The ACC beat the sec 6-4 straight up in regular season games (6-1 if you leave out division champs.) The acc is solid top to bottom whereas the sec has a couple of good teams. The acc is also favored to win the two bowl games that are matched up with the sec. Tony, why don’t you have the honesty and integrity to point out how wrong you were this year regarding the ACC and sec? And, as always, Thank God and Greyhound that the sec of coaches, Chan Gailey, is gone forever.

UGA Lady….I am not going to say Jones should be rookie of the year over Green or that Jones is a better players. I am happy to have Jones at UA but would be equally as happy with Green. However, when you disect the stats you need to look at a few factors. Anyone who watches football knows that UGA threw the ball a lot more than UA did. You can see that clearly in the number of receptions by Jones and Green but also the number of receptions by other receivers as well. Massaqua (SP?) is closing in on a 1000 yard season as well which shows you just how much more UGA threw the ball. Jones was our primary receiver the entire season. I think arguements can be made for both Jones and Green and it is safe to say that both will have great college careers and will make A LOT of money one day!!

It should have been Morgan Burnett. He had SEVEN interceptions this season. Georgia fans can certainly recall one of his pick 6’s.

Hey Tech Man, Where was the great GT offense in the first half against UGA when they scored 12 points. While UGA’s defense maintained disciplined defense they held Tech offense in check. But in the 2nd half they lost that discipline (which they have very little of all year) and Tech got a lot of big plays. And just for the record TB and many others in the press have GT and Paul Johnson as the flavor of the month. Enjoy it while it last. Just like in the 1st half against UGA teams in the ACC are going to figure it out and learn to maintain discipline and Tech will need more than a scheme to continue winning. Everyone keeps says “and Johnson did this without his players.” He will be lucky if he ever has another back even close to Dwyer in size and speed; he has a big strong offensive line; And a solid defense. Quarterback play could be better but how many option quarterbacks are also great passers, one only comes along every so often and the best will be playing the spread at Florida or elsewhere. So “his” players are going to be able to add much to the mix. Navy played a schedule of patsies that didn’t have the athletes to control the option even though they saw it every year, but the ACC teams do and will. The more they see it the more effective they will be against it. Butch Davis obviously already knows how to defend it. Congrats on a good year, and your win over UGA. There is a reason the option had it day in college football 30-40 years ago and then faded away. Defensive coaches know how to stop it it will just take a year or two to remember.

hatfieldgeoff….Who cares where the Tech offense was in the 1st half. At the end of the game they won! I am in no way a tech fan but Paul Johnson is a VERY good coach and will be successful at Tech. They implemented a new offense this year and had a great year. I think it will be even better once they have a year under the belts. I dont think it will result in year in and year out wins over UGA or ACC titles but they will be competitive in their league each year and the UGA-GT game will no longer be a gimme for UGA.

The problems with your analyses, Hatfieldgeoff is that: (1)GT is very young and this is it’s first year running this offense. Tech will get even better and the decisions and speed of play will become even faster with more experience. (2) Nesbitt made better reads in the second half—it wasn’t merely because of lack of discipline by the Mutt’s D. Our coaches know how to adjust ‘in game’ as well (unlike under the previous regime) (3)Johnson hasn’t fully installed his run’n’shoot package yet. And you think this offense is tricky to stop now?! Once more of that is installed, this offense is going to become even more of nightmare for an opposing coach to prepare for, particularly when his scout team offense won’t be able to replicate the speed of this in practice. (4) UNC didn’t as much stop Tech’s O as Tech stopped itself on TOs and penalties and missed blocking assignments (by the Jackets young O line). The Jackets still racked up a good chunk of yards against the Heels. (5) Johnson has been running his offense for years and years now, and I don’t think he’ll be surprised at what a D coordinator is going to throw at him to try to shut his O down. CPJ knows how to adjust to what the D gives him, despite whether or not the Defensive coaches “know how to stop it.

Hatfieldgeoff, Dwyer does have great size and speed; however, I would like to point out the 3 players who will be behind him next year. Dwyer has 4.6 speed according to his recruiting profile. So do all 3 of his future back-ups: Anthony Allen (transfer from Louisville), Richard Watson (red-shirted this season) and Dan Drummond (commitment from Flowery Branch). All of these guys have 4.55-4.6 speed and all of them are between 220-235 pounds. I’ve seen Allen and Drummond play, and they both looked pretty good. Watson was one of the top FBs out of high school. They all do have Dwyer’s size and speed; hopefully they have his downfield vision as well. The future is looking very bright on the flats…

Nice to know that Tech fans love Georgia fans so much that they have to write about us all the time. Thanks for showing the love. We will see what happens in 111/2 months until then who cares what you say, nobody. But you can just keep right on showing the love, love reading the arm chair coaches. Auburn Man, did you forget your season a few years back, when the only thing your team could get was a field goal in the first three games and Tech was one of those teams.

What’s up with the “ACC Game of the year” not being a match up of two ACC teams? Shouldn’t that catagory apply only to regular and post season play? I don’t see you saying that the Tech-Georgia game was the best SEC game. Nor would you.
It’s a shot at the ACC - that it takes an SEC opponet to produce a good game.
That UNC-Miami is the real winner.

hatfieldgeoff,
Keep dreaming. Sure UGA did fairly well in the 1st half, that’s the nature of PJ’s offense, it wears you down. At 130+ yards in the half, Tech’s offense actually moved the ball okay, even in the 1st half against UGA (sure, not as well as it did in the 2nd half, but ok), it was defensive breakdowns that caused them to be down by 16.
As for UNC. In what reality does holding a team to 423 yards on offense constitute stopping their offense???? Tech lost that game mainly because of turnovers (-3). Tech gained 423 yards with a gimpy QB.

A lot of haters on this board. Yes, UGA fell short of expectations but all the haters should ask why the national media had UGA ranked so high instead of jumping on the backs of UGA fans. We didn’t tell people to rank the team #1 in the preseason. Despite our letdown of the season we have a 9-3 record. Where are UT and AU right now? I’ll take a 9-3 letdown with a stable coaching staff over a losing record and downgrade at head coach any day.
As for FPOTY, AJ is the man. Julio is good but not only did AJ have better stats, he shared catches with MoMass which makes those freakish numbers even more impressive. The biggest difference between Bama and UGA was defense. UGA’s offense played well enough to be a BCS contender so to say that Julio was more instrumental to Bama’s success than AJ is bunk. If UGA had Bama’s defense the Dawgs would be 11-1 playing in a BCS Bowl this winter and UF would still be playing for the BCS Championship.

In my humble opinion:
The SEC rookie of the year boils down to three players:
Janoris Jenkins A.J. Green Julio Jones
My winner: Julio Jones. He is sick-good.
Coach of the year: Houston Nutt
Defensive Player of the Year: Definitley Eric Berry. Every QB finds where he is pre-snap.

Why would you leave out the division champs??? Oh yeah, that’s because your division champs didn’t play anyone from the SEC….and you folks like to talk about schedules and Sagarin ratings. These schedules are made years in advance. Unless you can honestly tell me that Kent State, Rhode Island and Western Kentucky (teams your division champs played) were predicted to be better than Tennessee, LSU and Auburn (teams our division champs played) when these schedules were made, STFU!PLEASE!!

I would definitely take Jones over AJ as rookie of the year. AJ has more receptions and yardage but that was only cause UGA threw the ball twice as much as Bama. The difference between the 2 is what they would do after catching the ball and in that regard there is no contest. Julio could not be brought down by 1 guy all year. He would consistently carry 2-3-4 guys for an extra 5-10 yards after every catch. It was amazing watching 1 or 2 dbs trying to bring him down as he would just carry and drag people. You can’t say the same about AJ. I absolutely guarantee that Julio broke more tackles and had more yardage after the catch. He probably averaged more yards per catch although I’m not sure.
Jerry Peria of Ole Miss was indeed the single best college noseguard I have ever seen. This guy is a sheer monster and I would respectfully disagree with all my Bama brethren. I would definitely take him over Cody. This guy would whip double teams on a consistent basis. In all of Ole Miss’s biggest games he was a terror against UF, LSU, MISS ST(not that they were tough), and he was excellent against our ALL AMERICAN center Antoine Caldwell. Its ridiculous that he got left out of the equation. Their whole D-line is a terror and along with Peria their DE is also all america caliber. Ole Miss is going to be tough next year. The Florida game, the close loss to Bama, and the aZZpounding of LSU and Miss St. late in the season are just a preview as to how good these guys may be next year. I pick them as a darkhorse to win the conference next year.

I can’t wait until Saban faces an SEC West where every team doesn’t suck. He may be ahead of schedule but trying to repeat a trip to the SECC game and contend for the MNC game is no longer a given. Of course the old mullets expect him to be like the Bear and dominate every year but the NCAA is a lot more stringent on buying players these days. I predict that Bama goes 9-3 next year, maybe 10-2, but they won’t contend for a national title unless the SEC West is as dysfunctional as it was this year.

It doesn’t surprise me that you would pick your WR over UGA’s. AJ had a better per catch average and twice as many touchdowns because he didn’t have to drag people around for 5-10 yards. HE WAS WIDE OPEN BECAUSE OF HIS SKILL AS A ROUTE RUNNER AND RECEIVER. This gives him the nod over Julio.
Both guys are awfully good and should be good for a couple more years until they bolt for the NFL. Julio is definitely the better physical specimen. That dude is built like a defensive end!!
Good luck beating the crap out of the Utes!! They are a good team, but ‘bama and Florida are the 2 best teams in the nation, and not just because they “schooled” UGA this year.

The same people that picked AU to win the West placed UGA in the #1 spot, only to see them get dusted at home by Bama (more like a scrimmage for the Tide) and plowed under by Tebow and Harvin. Predictions in the SEC are worth sh**. Who knew how bad a job Richt would be doing with all that talent after being at THUGA this long? He needs to man up and give his defense some backbone and also learn to discipline the hoodlums he recruits to not commit 30 yards worth of penalties on the opening drive of a team like Alabama. Keeping his players out of jail might help as well.

The reason for all of the UGA haters is because before the season, all we heard on this board was National Championship talk. How people had their tickets to Miami booked. How UGA had turned the corner against Florida and Gt was just another blip on the screen. Remember, UGA was going to stomp UF? This was all the pregame talk. Then, they were going to stomp Gt. Now, after the fact they want to make excuses and call everyone haters. The reason all of the “haters” are here is becuase you fans run your mouth EVERY year and then ramble off excuses after unexpected losses. If UGA fans would not talk soo much beforehand, you would not catch so much Hell afterwords.

Should anyone respect Tech? Sure, Tech just had a “great” season going 9-3 and not winning their conference must less their division. That includes a 3 point win over an overrated UGA. Meanwhile, UGA is having a “down” season going 9-3 not winning their conference much less their division including a 3 point loss to Tech. Yes, UGA lost to Tech but UGA still owns the all-time record and just came off a seven year win streak. UGA has played in 3 BCS bowls, won 2 SEC Championships, won 3 East division championships, finished in the Top 10 5 times and beat Tech 7 times in the past 8 seasons.
Let’s say Tech beats UGA again next year, anything short of an ACC championship would be a letdown. At what point is Tech going to step up their game and become a real contender in their own conference consistantly the way UGA has been in the SEC of late? The only time Tech went to the ACC championship game they backed into it and even lost to UGA that season.
Hate all you want, but UGA has earned enough respect nationally to be in relevant discussion. Preseason rankings aren’t always right but only teams with a recent history of success get mentioned in the summer time. Exactly why should Tech be beating their chests again?

It’s funny how you tech people talk about how bad UGA sucks but then act like they should be playing for a championship next year because they beat them. UGA did suck this year due to lack of defensive discipline which is not called an excuse it is just the reason we sucked. When you lose, there are always reasons (turnovers were normally Tech’s reason for losing), yet when UGA loses you like to call them excuses. You come on hear and talk about how y’all “stung UGA all over the place” and how much we suck and are dumb rednecks and how great Tech is and is going to be and then call UGA fans “classless and arrogant.” Maybe you should look at yourselves. To all of the uninformed bloggers, like GT4ever, that have asked what eveidence there is of all the coaches thinking Green was better; well, let’s see, if you go anywhere other than this blog, you’d know. Try SECsports.com, where it will plainly tell you that Green was one of 3 unanimous selections to the all SEC freshman team, Jones was not unanimous. Also, they (SEC coaches) voted Green “FRESHMAN of THE YEAR!” Also, why don’t you go to rivals right now and see their lead story? Oh that’s right, you’re too busy hurling idiotic insults and comments around on a UGA blog even though you are a Tech fan.
Jones is a fantastic receiver and the person who said that he and Green are very close in talent, but different in style was correct. I think the voters just looked at Green having a lot more touchdowns relative to the # of passes caught, and a slightly better YPC number.

Modawg,
Are you accusing me, a Bama fan, of being biased in my pick of Julio over AJ? You would be correct sir! They are both great young receivers and the truth is that one can make an argument for either one of them. UGA fans pick AJ and have their reasons and of course we pick Julio. The sec coaches picked AJ because of better stats in the passing game but the AP picked Julio for national freshman of the year. Doesn’t matter. They both did great and have great careers ahead of them.
I saw your post about us finally being relevant again. I do have to respectfully disagree with you on that. Its not as if we’ve been gone for 20 years. We were extremely relevant in the 90s(5th winningest program of the 90s) and we only slipped in the 2000s because of the 2nd worst probation ever(21 schollies lost). Only a handful of programs would have the sheer resilience to rise again from that kind of hit.But we did and all things being equal there is no reason why we shouldn’t be like we were in the 90s under Stallings.Even then we still have 4 10+ winning seasons in the last 9 years, 2 sec title appearances and 1 sec title, and we would have played for the sec title in 02 if not for the 1st year of 5 years of probation. Incidentally, as recently as 2005 we spent the majority of the season ranked #3 till we finally lost in ot in the 10th game of the season to LSU. Don’t know where you guys get this irrelevancy thing from but the fact is that even through the devastating probation we still had some great seasons. You guys need some fresh material instead of the old irrelevancy line if you want to put down Bama.

I think saying they both have different styles is the best way of putting it between Julio and AJ but more than that they both play in dramatically different styles of offenses which gives AJ a definite advantage stats wise. I will step out on a limb and say that if Julio played with a surefire future NFLer in Stafford in a much more wide open style of offense then his stats would certainly surpass AJs and if AJ played in Saban’s offense I just can’t see him having as good stats that Julio had in the same offense with a very average qb. Just an opinion and I’m certain dawg fans can and will disagree.

Again with all due respect to you and the Alabama football program, for several years, your fanbase had been mostly quiet. For the fishtales and BAMA STAN (BS, for short and for sure) type fans who are now over-the-top with their “‘bama is the best team and UGA is mediocre” rantings, my relevance suggestion is only that to have been basically irrelevant for the past few years, they sure are full of themselves now.
Alabama is a very proud and fantastic football program, and the sanctions did hurt, I’m sure, I just think people need to act like they’ve been there before. That’s all.
‘bama kicked our butts at home, during a blackout. That was embarrassing. We can cling to the 30 points in the second half if we want to, but the game was never in question. GT made adjustments at halftime, and we must have been looking for tennis rackets for “all” of our ladies on campus to eat corn on the cob through (wtf, indeed?) because they came out in the 3rd quarter and blew our doors off.
I’ll take 9-3 with the 3 losses to some pretty damn good teams any year. We’ve got some improving to do, but we will be around and relevant for a long time.

Modawg,
Now I see where you are coming from. Certainly you are correct. We have our share of over the top fans and BamaStan is certainly one of them. Personally I dislike his posts and in particular his rantings towards UGA and the blackout game. No call or reason for him talking so much trash about one game. There’s Bama stan and one or 2 other Bama posters that are out of hand and then there are a lot of more rational Bama posters like myself and several others on here. Let’s face it. We all have our share of yahoos and I can think of a couple dawg posters who were constantly putting down bama before the season for no other reason than just hatin on us. No sense going into that. Just ignore our crazies and most of us will just ignore your crazies. That is kinda funny though that BamaStan means BS. I just figure in Bama stans case that maybe a UGA sweetie broke his heart or maybe he got his @ss kicked by a dawg fan. Who knows? Maybe it was somekind of childhood trauma like Uga IV biting him in the Azz!

Shane,
I actually have to give the Techsters full credit for the 90 title and no Colorado was not the better team. They ended the season with a tie and a loss. On top of all that they won the biggest bs game in history against a lowly opponent. They got a 5th down in a series to win the game in the closing seconds. The referees simply lost track of the downs and forgot to flip the down marker one time so much to the protestations of the opposing defense and coaching staff Colorado scored on a 5th down. It was unfreakingbelievable. A team that finished with 1 loss, a tie, and avoids another loss with the infamous 5th down play should not be considered a national champion. In the annals of NCAA history the 5th down game is maybe the biggest referee screw up of all time.

Newnan dawg,
I always pull for the sec no matter what. I have a lot of friends that went to Auburn and I even gasp!!! pull for Auburn when they go to a bowl game. I’ve been to Auburn games with Auburn friends, UGA games with UGA friends, and went to the LSU-AUBURN earthquake game years back with a couple LSU hotties we met at the beach. I’ve no problem even with Auburn and personally I think its a shame and very sad what happened with this whole Tubberville to Chizik thing. What the hell were they thinking? They will probably just end up in the coaching wilderness like bama was after Stallings left. Personally, I hated Tubbs and seeing him waive 5 and 6 fingers over the streak and all that but the bottom line was that he was a helluva coach and it was just plain dumb to let him go.

Evidently you don’t have a clue seeing as I posted Jerry made two All-America teams. He was first team AP and ESPN. As one of your Bama co-horts posted he beat double-teams consistently to make plays in the backfield.
Cody was good at stopping up the middle against the run, but as far as making big plays the stats show Jerry was better.

Now, just between us enemy bloggers in this sandbox, I’d reverse the SEC Rookie of the Year picks. Jones created a threat that helped open things up for Coffee and Ingram. Taking nothing away from Green here, but I believe the reverse happpened whereas Moreno helped opened things up for Green and, for the record, MoMass…Also, from day one against Clemson, Jones made a statement. Took Green a bit longer. Plus there’s the little known fact Alabama played in the SECCG with him on the outside.

Seriously! Don’t get rid of CMR. He’s a good coach (better than Dooley! yeah, I said it!) and all you have to do is look at Auburn to see what awaits a team that gets rid of a good coach because he has a bad (if you can call 9-3 bad) year. You can throw UT in Auburn’s bucket too.
And I’m not saying that because Tech beat UGA, either.
If UGA can manage to beat Florida next year the SECE should be at hand, with UT, Auburn, SC, Vandy, and UK falling in the W column. Sad to say but Vandy will be the toughest game of those I mentioned outside of UF.

“Why would you leave out the division champs???”
The ACC was 0-3 against UF and Bama, the SEC was 1-15 - not too different.
The ACC was 6-1 against the rest of the SEC.
I’ll concede that UF and Bama would have done as well in the ACC as they did in the SEC, but the rest rest of the SEC including UGA and Ole MIss would have been pretty average ACC teams. I doubt that either would have made the ACCCG.

UGA fans on this blog are such tools. Keep talking smack about how superior you are to us Trade Schoolers. I hope it makes you feel better. Keep deluding yourselves into thinking your talent level is infinitely better than Tech’s.
Oh yeah, and hold tight to hopeful little notion that our coach and his “gimmick” offense are a flash in the pan. UGA, YOU just became SECOND tier in this state. This was your best chance to beat us, in CPJ’s first year, with a young team and a reduced roster, in your PRESEASON NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP YEAR. Keep reminiscing about 7 year win streaks. Your time is done for as long as CPJ is at Tech. Everyone knows it except delusional UGA fans. You’re done for a long time. Florida has the SEC East locked up, and Tech will have the state locked up.

It’s actually 39 wins by all credible sources (save the UGA AA of course), but UGA gets creative by not including the WW2 games. For such a dominant program with such a rich history of NCAA probations and sanctions UGA cries an awful lot about Tech lying and cheating.

No hate here but let’s put GT’s 45-42 win in context. Reminds me a lot of Dooley’s 7-0 win over GT in 1964 (his first year at UGA) which set the tone for the future.
UGA had wonderful, experieced skill players and GT still won.
UGA had a well established, very good coach in CMR (as with Dodd in 64) and GT still won.
The game was in Athens and GT still won.
GT’s unusual offense was only half-installed and GT still won.
GT started 16 frosh or sophs and GT still won.

Guys, we can do this all day. 59-39 and you are proud of that?? DELUSIONAL!!
Division 1 Football programs’ winning percentage -
UGA ranks 12th GT ranks 29th
6 of the top 20 teams in winning percentage are in the SEC. The ACC has 2, Florida State and Miami. UGA just became 2nd tier in this state?? This is the kind delusion I was referring to. You get 1 win in 8 years against a “bad SEC defense” by 3 points and now you are a top tier team??? So you beat a 2nd tier team by 3. Gardner-Webb and UGA are on the same tier now?? Please, if you don’t get help from Charter, get help somewhere.

No excuses, here. I was the first Dawg on the Tech blog congratulating them on their win. They did win, and did so impressively. Rational Tech and UGA fans understand and appreciate this fact. I am not disputing this years’ game. The better team won, as I have stated ad-nauseum. In the 3 biggest games of our year, we couldn’t put 2 halves of football together. That is not the sign of a great team, and though we are a good team, we certainly underachieved this year considering what we had coming into the year.
The delusional Tech fans who think that just because they didn’t go 6-6 or 7-5 again, they are a top tier team is just ridiculous. I am just mystified by their ignorance.

Why are you asking me…? Where did I ever say anything about the ‘bama game and us winning a half? That’s pathetic logic, I agree with you on that, but when you jump in with “I know ya’ll haven’t won anything since 1980 but the game is still played for 60 minutes.” how else am I supposed to take that other than “bama is great!”. It’s as if you were beating your chest, and for the past several years, you’ve had no cause to beat your chests. That certainly changed this year. That’s all I’m saying. I know we have some ignorant Dawg fans, but that can be said for a small portion of any fanbase, especially in the SEC.

Check your post…I am NOT a GT fan, but we can forgive the type-o. yes, it is about championships, but it should also be about consistency, and the winning percentage is as much to do with consistency as anything. In an ever-changing college football landscape, to be a consistent winner is more a measurement of a good program (not a 2nd tier program as some idiot posted earlier). Championships are nice, no doubt and while I’d love for UGA to have had a National Championship since 1980, (though we’ve had some SEC Championships, don’t forget) the program is still consistently one of the better programs in the nation. I don’t believe you can discount that fact. Since the BCS, we have had more “mythical” National Champions than before. Personally, I’d favor a playoff of some sort.

That was actually MY way of insinuating that the UGA putdowns of Bama was some unwarranted Bulldog chest thumping. Wasn’t my intent to brag at all. And I wasn’t referring to you in my original posts…but some of your brethren are sure quick to point out those things…and the always classic “the Bear is dead” joke that I see on here all the time. We definitely agree on your last point…we sure have our share as well. Smack talk is fun until name calling and insults are thrown in. Not that it hurts my wittle feelings…it just takes the fun debating down to a third grade level.
Peace.
