Will Muschamp will not be the next coach at Auburn

We are about to face one of the darkest Saturdays of the fall. Except for the playoffs, there is no college football. The beginning of the bowl season is still a week away. Ugh.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t make predictions. I went 3-2 last week because I picked Boston College to beat Virginia Tech in the ACC championship (I should never doubt Frank Beamer) and I picked Tulsa’s high-flying offense to beat East Carolina in the Conference USA championship. My pick of Florida over Alabama in the SEC championship was looking pretty bleak when the fourth quarter started. But the Gators had No. 15 (Tim Tebow). So we end the season with a record of 95-50.

I made a lot of wrong picks this season, but looking back I only made one REALLY dumb pick and that was Georgia over Florida. Georgia was coming off a road game at LSU, who we now know was not very good, and Florida was coming off a serious beat-down over Kentucky and was playing lights out.

So here are a few predictions that should get you through the weekend:

1. Will Muschamp will not the be the next coach at Auburn: I just got off the phone with Will Muschamp, the defensive coordinator and head coach in waiting at Texas. He emphatically shot down television reports in Mobile that he would be the named the next coach at Auburn today.

“I have not talked to Auburn about this job and I have no interest in the job,” said Muschamp. “I really don’t know what else to say. I’m going to stay at Texas until they fire me.”

My sources tell me that some Board of Trustee members did pick up the phone and call Muschamp to find out if he was interested. But those sources also tell me that when Muschamp was at Auburn as DC, he and athletics director Jay Jacobs did not part on the best of terms.

2.It’s pay day for Tech’s Paul Johnson: The fact of the matter is that Johnson left significantly more money on the table at Duke and SMU in order to take the job at Georgia Tech. Why? Johnson knew that he could win an ACC championship at Georgia Tech and get to a BCS bowl. He took less money on the front end because he knew that if he won, the money would come on the back end of the deal. Well guess what? It’s pay day for Paul Johnson.

Georgia Tech went 9-3 and beat Georgia. The Yellow Jackets fans have bought every ticket they can get their hands on for the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Some bowl people are telling me that Georgia Tech is considered to be one of the hottest teams in the country. And that is only after one season under Johnson. I know Johnson well enough to know that he’s not hung up on money. But professional pride says he should be paid in in the top half of ACC coaches. Tech is not rolling in money but the Institute needs to step up. Now.

3. Heisman vote will be one of closest ever: I think Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell should have been invited to join Florida’s Tim Tebow, Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford and Texas’s Colt McCoy at the Heisman Trophy presentation tomorrow night. Harrell was mentioned in the same breath with the other three all season. The reason Harrell wasn’t invited, I believe, is that there is a significant gap in the votes between those three guys and him. That tells me that this vote is going to be close.

Understand that the Heisman voting is very much like a political election in that you have to carry regions of the country in order to win. There are six voting regions: South, Southwest, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Far West.

It’s a pretty good bet that Tebow is going to carry the South but it is also a pretty good bet that and Bradford, McCoy and Harrell will divide the vote in the Southwest. The Heisman voting is different than an election in that you get points for second and third place votes. Last season Tebow carried five of the six voting regions and so the odds are good that this time he will be on just about everybody’s ballot somewhere.

4. Investigation will clear UCF, O’Leary: Central Florida is doing the right thing in calling for an independent investigation into the collapse of player Brandon Davis during a recent morning workout. Davis got woozy and so the decision was made to take him to a local hospital. The reason this was news was that back in March another UCF Player, Eric Plancher, died during a workout. The school did not handle that tragedy well in terms of being quick to investigate and putting all of the information about Plancher’s death on the table.

That episode caused a cloud of suspicion to rise over this incident. The parents of the player have charged in media reports that Davis had kidney failure and was not given water during the work out. Both of those things are going to turn out not to be true. But those charges began a feeding frenzy and speculation that George O’Leary was on his way out as head coach. UCF has hired an attorney with NCAA experience to conduct a thorough investigation into the training practices in O’Leary’s program. It will show that UCF’s workouts are no different than any other program in Division I-A football. Are those programs too strenuous? That’s another argument.

Some are calling for O’Leary’s resignation because of all the negativity surrounding the program this season. They feel it is the only way to lift the cloud of suspicion over the program. Unless this investigation turns up a smoking gun, that is not going to happen.

5. The politicians will lose to the BCS again: Yet another member of Congress with too much free time on his hands is introducing legislation in an effort to compel Division I-A football to adopt a playoff. His point is that the BCS “consistently misfires” and since there is controversy around the national championship, a system like the BCS should not be able to market itself as a game FOR the national championship.

The fact that there is controversy surrounding the national championship of college football certainly comes as a shock to all of us who follow the sport.

This is so silly. We will eventually get a four-team playoff in college football. But it will be because it makes sense to the institutions that make up Division I-A and not because members of Congress want to score cheap political points.

Chick-fil-A Luncheon: If you’re free for lunch on Monday, come by the Marriott Marquis as The Atlanta Sports Council will host a luncheon featuring the two coaches who will square off in the Chick-fil-A Bowl on Dec. 31. Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson and LSU’s Les Miles will break down the game and answer questions from fans. Tickets are $35 and can be reserved by calling (404) 586-8537.

Any idea how much money Auburn is handing out to former coaches they have run off? Tuberville, Bowden, Oliver (who else am I forgetting?)

Something is rotten on the plains & it is coming from the top.

You’re right on about CPJ, Tony.

He left 400K/yr in more $$$ so he could be at Georgia Tech instead of SMU or Duke. He’s a winner. Winners probably don’t want to be at Duke or SMU…unless they are looking for a stepping stone.

Just ask Spurrier.

And Tony Barnhart for Sec. of Defense (I would say VP, but Defense is much cooler!).

  1. CPJ SHOULD get paid. I was not happy about him being hired because I root against tech. He’s a really good coach that seems to be a great fit at tech personality wise. If they don’t pay him, even with his character, he may be gone in 3 years.

  2. Tebow will win #2, stay his last year and try for a record 3rd and win another SECC. I hate (I mean really HATE) florida but something occured to me last night watching the awards show: fla has had 2 of the most inspirational, high character QB’s in the last 20 years in Tebow and Weurful(sp?). class acts.

  3. Oleary is a real dirt bag going back to blaming his players for a few losses at tech.

Big Tone,

I think you were having a few too many “cold ones” with your buddies on the lynx that day when you picked my dawgs in the “worlds largest cocktail waste of time and money game”. Remember last year when I picked the USC lamecocks to lose 6 or 7 straight weeks? Keep a streak like that in mind when picking the next few GA/FLA games.

Anyways, I enjoyed the season. It was fun.

Oh by the way…..Coach Willie Martinez is available for any coaching vacancies this year. That memo goes out to my alma matter as well- Cook High School.

Tony, You should have used the exact quote from Mushcamp. “Tell them motherF#@!#r’s for the last time, I am not interested in that job”. I think it’s in You Tube by now. Just type in Muschamp. Johnson will probably be at Notre Dame next he doesn’t need a big payday from Tech. Classic triple option, clasic Notre Dame football. Plus not lies on the old resume like the last Tech coach ND tried to hire. Or maybe even Bama. Saban to Detroit if they can wiggle a few bucks with the bailout.

CPJ needs to be shown some love ($$) immediately. I am very concerned that we have had no adamant statement yet regarding the terms of a new agreement with DRAD and CPJ together. I know CPJ is busy recruiting, but this Aubarn bunch is desperate, and Pat Dye loves our coach.

Please, those of you in the decision making area with regards to Coach Johnson and his compensation, get him signed, sealed and delivered as soon as possible. Turning down 400K at Duke or SMU is a little easier than turning down a 1.5 million dollar raise from an SEC school!!

Go Jackets!!

Will Muschamp is the new head coach at Auburn

By SC Rules!!!

December 12, 2008 10:03 AM | Link to this

Tony;

I am sure your source is correct, why would Muschamp take a pay cut to come coach the kittens??? He will be making more money as HC in waiting with the ‘Horns than the farm could pay him. Barn fans just remember that stack of “pennies” y’all piled up hoping to land a real coach with are just that, pennies, y’all need to get some CASH!!! Ohh and by the by no need to place that collect call to Pete Carroll, he is very happy right wheere he is. If you doubt that watch 60 Minutes this Sunday, he is being profiled on there not only for his accomplishments as SC coach but for his work in helping clean up the streats of L.A. He is really doing some great work to try and help inner city kids. That alone rates him as a top notch guy in my book.

Tony, thanks for an entertaining season. CPJ should get paid and I think Tech will do what it takes to keep him.

Tebow should win another Heisman due to the fact that Bradford, Mccoy, and Harralson will split so much of the Western vote.

Tebow’s definitely winning the Heisman. I mean, did anyone else who watched the awards show last night think that they should’ve just called it “the Tim Tebow Appreciation Awards?” I kinda felt bad for the Big 12 guys because everyone was acting like it was Tebow, oh and those other guys. They called him Superman.

Tuberville needs to take a year off and relax. There will be 4 or 5 jobs open next year and they WILL ALL interview him…..and at 2.5 mil a year at 5 years. He ain’t worried. Got 5 mil coming and 10 mil or so in the bank. Merry Christmas Tommy. Auburn will hire the guy from TCU. Proven good coach, not much down side. My Dawgs have lot’s of questions in the off season.

  1. Is Willie that bad of a coach or did the stars just not line up this year, injuries,Chemistry etc.
  2. Can Cox replace Stafford and be as good……. or better.
  3. Can we keep the other team from starting near mid field at every kick off.
  4. Do we have a back who can rush for 1,300 plus yards.
  5. Can we come out and smack someone else in the mouth for a change.
  6. Can we tackle vs. trying to knock people down with our shoulder.
  7. Can we put Any pressure on a QB.

ANSWERS PLEASE………..

The reason that Auburn hasn’t named a head coach and that it seems that no one of any stature is really interested is that they all understand what a daunting job it is to have to stand up to the brewing juggernaut over in Tuscaloosa. Auburn needs to go out and find an up and coming line coach somewhere and hope for the best.

Why should Tech rewrite Johnson’s contract now? This smells of Notre Dame, et al., giving big raises after one fluke season. Those institutions soon thereafter rued the renegotitated contratcs. I’m as sure as anybody that Paul Johnson is going to do well at Tech, but let’s let this play out.

As much as I dislike Florida, Tebow is going to win the Heisman. Not because of any vote splitting or regional stuff. He’s going to win it because when it counted, he always managed to put that Florida team on his shoulders and carry them to the promised land. I wouldn’t be surprised if decides to go pro. The next NFL draft class may be very QB rich.

By SugarHillDawg

December 12, 2008 10:54 AM | Link to this

Hey Beestie, you NERDS are really drinking the kool-aid. I will try a little logic on you. In order for Johnson to be a thorn in Richts side,Tech is REALLY gonna have to step up it’s game(and players) and that just AIN’T gonna happen.Tech is gonna have to get cream of the crop players like GThis last year was eorgia does and that AIN’T gonna happen. You might get a good running back every now and then but that offense does NOT translate into the pro game and that’s why kids play college ball-to go the Pros. This last year was a season marred by 20 something injuries and that AIN’T gonna happen every year. Next year Georgia will MUCH better on defense and we will see if lightning strike twice. I don’t beleive it will. Payback will be Hell Techmites.

Though O’Leary may not be responsible for the collapse of his player Mr. Barnhart, he’s certainly no angel. His integrity and character is along the lines of Frank Kush, Woody Hayes, and Bob Knight. I suppose a prosecutorial approach to him, rather than a defense position, would be more suitable. On a brighter note, thank you for the great coverage throughout the season. You’ve made the discussion of college football interesting everyday.

I want a play-off as much as the next guy, but the clowns in Washington need to govern the United States, not the BCS. speaking of which, maybe Congress should start taxing the BCS enterprise (university athletic departments, bowl games, etc.) and require BCS schools to pay the players. This would produce hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue (corporate and personal income taxes). If politicians can chime in on colege football, college football types like me can chime in on politics.

Mark,

Tuberville has been at Auburn for 10 years. Do you REALLY think they are still paying those other coaches?

If you want to look at schools paying former coaches, a more appropriate choice might be Bama who has had like 5 coaches in the past 10 years.

The coaching “merry go round” is rarely “merry”. Coaches lie and in Auburn’s case- AD’s and boosters lie- BIG TIME!!! What a smear on the Plains. Sad! Wouldn’t surprise me if after next year Miles is gone and Tub ends up in Baton Rouge!! Good luck to the Dawgs, Tigers, Gators, ‘Dores, Cocks, Wildcats, Rebels and Tide in their bowl games. SugarHillDawg:

Name the last QB to come out of Tech who took more than a handful of NFL snaps. Clue: The answer is NOT Shawn Jones or Joe Hamilton.

Point is, if some kid wants to be an NFL QB (not CFL or AFL), he hasn’t been and will not be coming to Tech even if we dig up Vince Lombardi and put him on the sidelines. The rest of the positions? Works in the pros just as well as it works in Tech’s game. You just watch and wait and see over the next few years…

Speaking of which, with the rookie salary cap on the way Staff and Moreno will be playing on Sunday next year.

By @SugarHillDawg

Hey dumbass, how do you think CPJ was able to win at Navy with an even bigger recruiting challenge than at Tech? His 3O neutralizes any “talent” advantages the opponent might have by creating numbers advantages. CPJ does a great job reading defenses and calling plays to see how they’ll line up so the next time he calls the same formation but will run it to the weak side. We don’t need cream of the crop talent - as was evidenced when the Yellow Jackets beat arguably one of the best teams on paper. It comes down to more than just talent - coaching plays a huge role in a team’s success. I think you can agree with that.

But as to your Dawgies, we’re returning 19 starters. They will have had even MORE practice with this new offense. Look for this thing to be running like a well-oiled machine come November 2009. But, why should I be surprised you’re already talking about next year

Muschamp HC at Auburn, HA! Why would he leave the dominant BIG 12 and come to the weak SEC?

Don’t you really mean the Big 12 where 3 TEAMS dominate the other 9? How can you say that the Big 12 dominates? Look at the BCS record since 1998 when the BCS began:

Of those 10 years, the SEC has won 4 of the championships and has a perfect record of 4-0 in championship games. 3 different teams have from the SEC have won it all in that span.

Your Big 12 has won 2 championships with a record of 2-3 in championship games.

No other conference has won more than 1 championship in that span.

Tech has ways of coming up with the money when it needs to…such as to pay the rest of Gailey’s contract…which rumor has it was paid for by certain alumni. They won’t pour money down a rathole but can make things happen if other things happen.

Also, DRad has implemented some additional revenue sources, such as TECH Fund PSLs. That meant an additional $300 from me alone. The TECH Fund PSLs also apply to hoops, and there aren’t many AMC seats that don’t have a PSL now.

Also, as with any business, it takes money to make money. Better football—or at least a more positively-thought-of program=butts in seats.

Keep in mind that ticket sales are up over last year—and that’s without mini-packs and without Clemson or UGA at home.

Tech will also get a nice ACC payout this year, with 10 teams contributing to the bowl fund.

TB,

The thing about these politicians is they seem to be basing their legislation on the restrictiong of free trade and commerce. In this way, they may actually have a case.

If Congress stops focusing on how the champion is crowned and instead focuses on how Boise State loses about 20 million dollars because the system is set up specifically to excluded them based on geography and conference affiliation, they may have something.

I don’t know how this denial from Muschamp is any different than that from his former boss Saban just a couple of years ago while with the Dolphins. What moron would say he’d love another job while in his current one, if he didn’t already know he was getting it. That would be a career limiting statement, just ask Pat Sullivan when he said he would love to be the HC at LSU, before LSU offered (which never came), and then had to tuck tail back to TCU, where they decided to let him go…

Give me a break. For MOST of its “history” Texas was in the SWC. You have 2 teams with more than 1 championship we have 4 and should have 5 (Auburn 2004). It’s really easy to win the Big 12 and run the table if you get past the 1 other school that has a chance to beat you. In the SEC you are playing a QUALITY team every week. I won’t even get into the total number of bowl games record among the conferences. In reality, the Big 12 is really just the Medium 2 plus the little 10.

I’m with AlabamaRW.

PJ is the only coach in modern GT history with a real chance to average 10+ wins and beat UGA over half the time.

And the worst he is likely to do is still the best long term program GT has been since Dodd.

From a pure financial perspective, PJ is the answer to whatever money problems exist. He will make more for GT than GT will pay him. Donations are sure to rise. Licensing fees will rise. Ad/marketing revenues will surely rise (and GT is near the end of the current ISP contract, I believe).

Moreover with PJ on the Flats in 2012 there won’t be an empty seat in the house. That means higher seat licenses, and it means rival fans who don’t have the juice to get their allotment tickets are just gonna be SOL.

When that happens I’m sure UGA fans can find something new to make fun of. I look forward to it, the old nerds-and-empty-seats schtick is getting worn out! ;-)

My point is Bammer has seen its fair share of BAD years. Hell, for the past 6 years we beat you guys. Dawgs, being pre-season number one picks doesn’t make you national champions. You at least have to win your division, win the SEC and play for it. Wait, uh, Auburn did just that in 04. Let me rephrase that. You at least have to go undefeated. Oh wait, we did that as well. 1- Muschamp should stay at Texas. He can assume more HC duties gradually, he will have an AD that will work with him, he will have a very talented team, and Lowder will not be there. 2- If Tech doesn’t get off the real money soon, someone else will! 3- Colt should win it, Tebow probably will. 4- Does anyone outside of Orlando care what happens to O’leary? He lied on his resume, created a cheating scandal at Tech that Chan paid for, and two kids in his care died. Football and the UCF kids will be better off without him. 5- The politicians can go with O’leary. The BCS is screwy enough as it is! 6- {on Me} Just a thought about Tubbs. Tubby should take a year or two off on AU’s dime and maintain his ties with Jerry Jones. Petrino may screw up at Arky, and old Jerry has deep pockets 7- { on Me again} If Notre Dame fires the fat man next year that will be a plumb of a coaching job. Three or four top recruiting classes in a row have been badly misused. Tenuta could be retained to coach the D, give him two years and he will instill some toughness in those guys A coach could take over, change the culture and tweak the playbook a little, win nine games against a weak schedule, and BINGO!!! That coach becomes a genuis overnight! Four million a year and all the media hype you can eat!

Chuck where did you get this information because you are just wrong.

Big 12 champions in the last 70 years,

Oklahoma 7 Nebraska 5 Colorado 1 Texas 1 (other 3 were SWC)

SEC Champions in that SAME Period:

Alabama 7 LSU 3 Florida 2 Tennessee 2 Auburn 1

Total Championships last 70 years:

SEC- 16 (5 different schools) Big 12- 14 (4 different schools)

Chuck where did you get this information because you are wrong.

According to official NCAA records they don’t sponsor a National Championship in College Football (the BCS) better known as Division 1A. But according to the BCS here are the all time championships for each conference going back to 1869. Thats 140 years buddy-

SEC- 30 total National Championships and these are consensus and/or unanimous NC and doesn’t include all the times a school was named NC in 1 or more polls but wasn’t a consensus NC.

Alabama- 10 Auburn- 1 Florida- 2 Tennessee- 4 Arkansas- 1 Georgia- 2 GT- 5 Ole Miss- 2 LSU- 3

Big 12- 23 Total National Championships and these are consensus and/or unanamous NC and doesn’t include all the times a school was named NC in 1 or more polls but wasn’t a consensus NC.

Oklahoma- 10 Nebraska- 7 Texas- 4 Colorado- 1 Texas A&M- 1

Note- I included Arkansas and GT in my figures for the SEC as Arkansas, realizing their 1 NC was while they were in the SWC, but now a member of the SEC and GT was a member when they won those 5 NCs.

I include Texas and Texas A&M in the Big 12 because they are now members realizing that 3 of Texas’s 4 NC and Texas A&M’s 1 NC were while they were in the SWC.

Chuck and YEAH RIGHT both conferences have a fine tradition of great college football and should be proud.

SugarHillDawg, You’d better warm up to the idea that Michigan State may well defeat the Bulldogs on January 1, and, worse, this year’s four losses could be exceeded in the 2009 season. It happens. Teams have to rebuild, even on years they’d like to be seen as Number One.

UGA will be in some disarray to open next season. The defense, to opponents, is a non-factor, and the offense, to offset that weakness, will have to get some good recruits. Maybe Richt and assistants can coach ‘em up, as the schedule proceeds. But it will be blood, sweat and tears.

Here’s an SEC nightmare. Bowl Armageddon, the end of the world.

Bowl Season opens with the greatest Rose Bowl in history. USC and PSU play a classic. The winner kicks a field goal to go ahead with less than a minute remaining 38-35. On the kickoff the opponent drives to just outside field goal range. The game ends with an incomplete pass into the end zone when the receiver is ruled out of bounds. Final AP ranking #1, #2, Final BCS ranking #2, #3

Utah stuns Alabama in the Sugar Bowl winning 17-3. Bama is #8 in the final rankings.

Ohio State takes the Texas Longhorn to the woodshed beating them 28-14 in the Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State finishes #4 in the BCS, and #3 in the AP

In the BSC championship Oklahoma upsets Florida in what many call the worst Bowl game ever viewed. 14-6. Florida is scoreless until 11:09 in the 4th when they score a touchdown missing the extra point. Florida finishes the season ranked #5

Tebow promises nobody in the NFL will play harder than he does to make up for the terrible way he played in his final game.

Tony, the congressmen supporting anti-BCS legislation are not trying to score “cheap political points”. They are simply taking the conversation into a new arena…and they should. Outside of the Heisman Trophy, the BCS is the biggest fraud in all of college athletics. It is a system that rewards privilege over accomplishment…isn’t that completely antithetical to the “American Dream” that folks are always preaching about? Look, the BCS only “works” when there are (2) undefeated teams…a rare occurrence in today’s atmosphere of balance and parity. An 8-Team playoff is not only the fair thing to do…its the democratic thing to do….and its going to happen…you know why?…because the BCS did not get the memo…you don’t mess with Texas…The Longhorns are now the jilted lover and that does not bode well for the BCS. Texas is the one place with enough consolidated power and influence (irony being presented here) that may be able to topple this most disgusting of sports networks…Hook Em’ Texas.

Tech is on the rise however you look at it. Congrats to the players, and I hope the fans continue to step up support through next season. Congrats to CPJ. Hope he continues the success we saw this year.

Falcons are on the rise too. Can anyone remember a season that has been as fun to watch? (98 was pretty fun too). Turner, Norwood, Douglas, Jenkins, White… but especially Ryan. Good to have a guy like him calling the shots. Also nice to have a quality person like Ryan at the helm.

I heard Jim D. on the radio the other day and he said the playoffs won’t happen because the Univ Presidents and AD’s have control. The reason is that if a playoff system were implemented, then the NCAA would get the money. As it stands now, the bowl money goes to the participating schools and their conferences, not to the NCAA.

At least that is what I understood Jim to say. If that is the case, it might take something from Congress to get the ball rolling.

Even though the U President’s claim they do this for the athletes’ best interest, and they put academics first, we all know they are just as greedy as any pork barrel politician.

I can see a possible split NC with either Texas or SC walking away with the AP side of it. If the shrubs some how pull the biggest upset on the planet and the Sooners are not found to be the laters then I see SC with the AP title.

With regard to SEC vs Big 12 titles/history; remember that Texas won the very last SWC title and the first Big 12 title. When THE PIGS fled the SWC that left an entire conference within the borders of one state: Texas. Lot of land and a lot of talent then and now! That talent is why Muschamp stays as the HC in waiting, too much $$$$ and too much talent to pass up each and every year.

DAWGHATER

Actually, someone just posted the UGA and GT football graduation rates on the Mr. CFB blog the other day. Both UGA and GT graduate the same 48% of their scholarship football players, which puts both programs near the bottom of both the ACC and SEC. You shouldn’t throw stones when you live in a glass house.

Paul Johnson will leave Tech in the next 3 years….probably not for ND, Urban will go there. More than likely it would be LSU when Miles is canned.

They say a serious candidate for the Auburn job is Gene Chiznik. Is he supposed to be the Shiznik!

Auburn will be fine. It may take time but things will work out and they’ll be contending for SEC championships again.

Keep in mind that CTT had trouble not just with offense but with offensive coordinators. Other than 2004 under Al Borges with a senior class made up of #1 draft picks (Campell, Cadillac, Ronnie Brown, Obamanu, Dansby, Carlos Rogers, etc) they had a good offense, not great, but with a stifling defense they were able to go 13-0. Once the talent started dwindling so did the offense. In CTT’s last two seasons Auburn’s offense was abysmal, ranking near the bottom of Div-I schools. I was all for giving CTT another season to try to right the ship, but I’m not so sure that he didn’t see the writing on the wall and that he’d not only worn out his welcome with the money boys but also kind of grown tired of having to kow-tow to the same. I think he’s a class guy but I think the decision to part ways was indeed mutual, and they did it in a way that Auburn saves face (didn’t fire a “winning” coach) and CTT doesn’t have a firing on his resume. Additionally CTT walks away with $5.1 big ones. He’ll land on his feet (already has) and if he chooses to coach again will get a big opportunity at a major university this time next year. He also has the benefit of negotiating as a known quantity (runs a clean program) and who has no obligations to any other schools.

Comments in response to Tony——

(1) That sounds like a pretty Sherman-esque denial of interest from Will Muschamp. Given that he’s making something approaching $1 million yearly as an assistant in Austin, Muschamp isn’t in any rush to take the first head-coaching job offered. He will either inherit his present program when Mack Brown is ready to call it a day, or can he wait and have his first pick of jobs as they are offered.

Frankly, there are more than a few reasons not to be in a rush to return to Auburn.

(2) In comparison to other coaches with similar levels of success in their first year, Paul Johnson deserves a raise. Georgia Tech needs to keep Johnson relatively happy; he’s the best thing to happen to Tech’s football program in two decades.

(3) Heisman Trophy Time, eh? Eight p.m., tonight, ESPN. The Downtown Athletic Club and ESPN will torment us for three times as long as necessary, and then we will know. Personally, I’ll wait until 10 p.m., and then check the internet rather than listen to all the hokum.

The numbers of the two Big XII quarterbacks are probably too eye-popping to ignore, but, if for no other reason, Tim Tebow should be seriously considered for his ability to lead his team and elevate the play of his teammates. I don’t expect Tebow to win, however.

IMHO, this season is a perfect example of why the Heisman and other major honors should not be given awarded until the bowl season is completed. Serious questions have been raised about the caliber of the Big XII defenses against whom Colt McCoy and Sam Bradford racked up all those passing yards. Are McCoy and Bradford really that good? After Texas has played Alabama, and Oklahoma has played Florida, we will know a lot more than we do now. I’m not ragging on the Big XII, but I think it’s a legitimate question that has not yet been definitively answered… .

Does anyone other than me remember those eye-popping quarterback numbers out of Brigham Young in the 1980s and ’90s? Does anyone else remember 12-0 BYU winning the AP national championship after beating 6-5 Michigan in the Holiday Bowl? Given their level of WAC competition, were those BYU teams and their QBs really worthy?

(4) There are a lot of things to like about George O’Leary, but the Georgia Tech/Notre Dame resume stink has never quite been blown off the coach. I think it continues to be one of the reason he is receiving added scrutiny for the two unfortunate player collapses during practice. Everyone in the media loves a good scandal (it’s much easier than having to do some homework while reporting on things like why our auto industry suffers from 40% higher costs than its Japanese competition).

Unless the UCF coaching staff was withholding or failing to provide hydrating fluids and electrolytes, it’s hard to see how the coach or his staff is responsible. It gets damn hot in Central Florida and most of the South during late spring, summer and early fall, and UCF is not the only program to suffer player collapses during practice over the last two years. No others come to mind, however, that have had two publicized player collapses (frankly, I’m sure there were more that never got coverage).

Any way, we will see.

(5) Yeah, I think it’s ridiculous that members of Congress are considering federal involvement in the creation of a Division I playoff, but I don’t doubt the sincerity of their reasons like Tony does. I’m sure there are many congressman who are also annoyed college football fans. The public wants a playoff, and so do the vast majority of players and coaches. With a 13-game season already a reality for bowl-bound teams and the successful example of Division II and III playoffs, it’s increasingly difficult to argue the logic of interference with the academics of student-athletes. Honestly, the entrenched financial interests of the bowl committees are the major impediment. If they continue to stand in the way, the major bowls run the risk of being left out when the playoffs finally happen. Does anyone remember when the Cotton Bowl and the Gator were prestigious? Does anyone see parallels with the current slide of the Sugar and Orange Bowl’s reputations?

ESPN projecting Matthew Stafford to be #1 pick in the NFL Draft. AND before all of you start saying “It’s the Lions he should come back another year”. Well,it will also be the Lions the follpwing year, BUT with a new labor agreement limiting the compensation for rookies. BUT the MAIN reason—as Dave Letterman would say—-Florida remains in the SEC East.

ATL Gator;

  1. I agree that Muschamp stays in Austin, why would he rush back to the barn; the ones who helped push him th Austin in the first palce are still there.
  2. GT Coach should put in another year like this one before asking for a new deal. 3.The reason they don’t wait is because they have to fill some TV time before the bowls start. I do agree about the BYU point, the NC was a joke, they had to beat a Michigan team that got in that bowl ONLY because of their name. 4.No opinion 5.As if the politicos don’t already have their hands in too many pies/pockets, now they want to legislate the outcome of the football season. JEEEZE! It’s bad enough they have their hands on my wallet every two weeks in theform of taxes this would absolutely take the cake!

Gene Chizik HC at Auburn…wow, I can hear the crickets chirping…and their commits dropping with each passing minute. Didn’t he go something like 5-16 the last two years at Iowa State?? Looks like Auburn will be holding up the rest of the west for many years to come…

I wouldn’t be so quick to gloat Bama fan, you forget two things: 1. ISU is a wrestling school so they don’t care too much about football. 2. He was a great DC at AU & UT, even helped direct UT to the NC. War Eagle fans, this reminds me of a certain “unpopular” hire for HC here in L.A.; now I’m not gonna say that he will do as well as Coach Carroll. But don’t despair, both are known for creating dominating defenses, and defenses win championships. Y’all will be just fine.

Howdy pardner! Hope all is well on the home front. Now that the seaon (regular) is over and you’ve had a couple weeks to digest how it played out, how would you rate it overall? I know y’all had a ton of injuries, especially along the O-line. With all the hoopla that surrounded the Dawgs to start the season, do you think Coach Richt did as well as could be expected or not?? Will Stafford and Moreno come back for their Sr. seasons?? I know our schedules is set through the 2010 season, probably the same for y’alls; what about any possible openings in the ‘11 or ‘12 season where our two programs might be able to arrange a little ‘ole ballgame?! That would be fun too see!

I don’t blame Muschamp. Auburn is a mess, and Austin, Texas is a nice place to live. Besides, his alma mater has a fairly young head coach who should be there for quite awhile. When he’s the head coach at Texas, he can outrecruit 90% of the nation with a minimum of effort. Why would anyone leave that situation?

Muschamp is a DGD, but does anyone else out there think that he might be a tad overrated? Sort of the Nick Saban of coordinators? He didn’t seem that fearsome as Auburn’s coordinator when we burned them for 40-something points last year. Don’t get me wrong - I think he’s a good coach. I just don’t think his resume’ justifies the level of hype that he receives. I wish him the best in any event.
