Five things you need to know about the SEC championship game

Five things you need to know about Saturday’s SEC championship game:

1. If Tim Tebow has a big game against Alabama he should win the Heisman Trophy: I know everyone is impressed with the numbers that Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford (4,080 yards, 46 TD), Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell (4,747 yards, 41 TD), and Texas’s Colt McCoy (3,445 yards, 32 touchdowns) are putting up. Those numbers are staggering. But trust me when I tell you that nobody in America is playing as well as Tim Tebow is right now. Since the 31-30 loss to Ole Miss on Sept. 27, Tebow has been a force of nature. In the eight games coming into Saturday’s showdown with Alabama Tebow has completed 90 of 144 passes (68 percent) for 17 touchdowns and only two interceptions. He has rushed for another 408 yards and 10 touchdowns. In those eight games Florida has outscored its opponents 414-97, an average margin of victory of 39.6 points per game. Florida put up 56 on South Carolina, which had the nation’s No. 3 defense, and 45 on Florida State, whose defense was ranked seventh at the time. This week Tebow faces the nation’s No. 3 defense in Alabama.

2. Alabama has speed, too: There is no question that one team (Florida) wants to turn this game into a track meet and the other team (Alabama) wants to it to be a street fight. But it would be a mistake to think Florida is the only team with speed. Yes, Florida will be very quick on the turf in the Georgia Dome. But so will the Alabama defense, that didn’t get to be No. 3 in the nation by being slow. Florida has an edge in speed but it the speed gap between the two teams is not as wide as some people think. I was on a conference call with some Alabama players earlier this week and it was clear they are getting tired of hearing that they are slow in comparison to the Gators. It’s not true. Speaking of speed, there is no doubt in my mind that Florida’s Percy Harvin is going to answer the bell at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

3.These teams don’t know what it is like to be behind: Florida has played 720 minutes of football this season. The Gators have trailed for only 15:38 through 12 games. Alabama trailed for 16:34 against LSU before winning the game 27-21. In the other 11 games this season Alabama trailed for 6:47. The Crimson Tide trailed for 5:32 against Mississippi State and for 1:15 against Ole Miss. In the other nine games this season Alabama never trailed. The reason Alabama and Florida don’t have experience in trailing is because both teams like to put their opponents into a hole early and watch them make mistakes while trying to climb out. In 12 games this season Florida has outscored its opponents 160-10. Alabama has outscored its opponents 123-20 in the first quarter through 12 games.

4. It will not be a high scoring game because both defenses are good: Everybody knows that Alabama has a great defense. But Florida’s defense, which was a weakness last season, has become a strength for the Gators. Here are the NCAA rankings in four major defensive categories.

Category—————————-Alabama———————-Florida

Total defense—————3 (248.5 ypg)—————7 (275.67 ypg)

Scoring defense———3 (11.5 ppg)——————4 (12.3 ppg)

Rushing defense———2 (73.6 ypg)—————-12 (102.8 ypg)

Pass defense————-20 (174.92 ypg)———— 7 (172.92 ypg)

5. The game will come down to turnovers: I have long believed that turnover margin—the number of turnovers your defenses creates minus the number of turnovers your offenses commits—is the most important stat in football. Alabama, for example, has created 24 turnovers (9 fumbles, 15 interceptions) while committing 15 (9 fumbles, 6 interceptions). That plus-9 margin ranks No. 21 in the country.

Florida, however, is ranked No. 1 with a turnover margin of plus 21. The Gators have forced 32 turnovers (9 fumbles, 23 interceptions) while committing only 11 (8 fumbles, 3 interceptions). Florida was the last team in the country to have a turnover this season. The three interceptions (2 by Tebow) for Florida this season is the lowest total for any team in Division I-A.

The X-Factors:

Everybody knows that two of the best punt returners in college football will be in this game. Florida’s Brandon James averages 14.67 and is one of six players in the country to return two punts for touchdowns. Another of the six with two punt returns for touchdowns is Javier Arenas, who averages 14.66 per return. How many touches will each get during the course of the game?

Here are two final stats that intrigue me: Florida has blocked eight kicks (5 punts, 2 field goals, 1 extra point) this season. Head coach Urban Meyer coaches the special teams and he is fanatical about it. Since Meyer got to Florida in 2005 his teams have blocked 45 kicks.

Alabama leads the nation in non-offensive touchdowns with eight. The Crimson Tide has returned four interceptions for touchdowns. Arenas has returned punts of 87 and 80 yards for touchdowns. Alabama has returned a block punt and a fumble for touchdown. Florida is second in the nation in this category with seven non-offensive touchdowns (5 interceptions, 2 punt returns).

UGA gave up 41, 49, 38, 38, and 45 points in games this year, but no coaching changes will be made. Now, we open at OK State next year - we may have to score 100 points if we hope to win cause we know they will score a ton of points!

With all that nice information about the SEC championship game, the game comes down to this can Bama stop Tebow and company Answer NO!! I love the crimson tide with my heart and soul, but Florida is in a different league and John Parker Wilson can not win the game for Bama. This season has been wonderful for me and millions of Bama fans, but midnight strikes at the Georgia Dome!! ROLL TIDE FOLKS!!

I am a big gator fan, but I believe this will be a great game. The Gators love playing in the dome. Go Gators and win your second National Championship in three years.

Way to go Yellow Jackets! Biggest joke of the year was Georgia ranked #1. Their schedule wasn’t that tough as expected and they still lose 3 games. They will keep their coaches and will contiue to win 9 or 10 games, but that is it. Stafford and Moreno have never played in the dome….guess they never will. I guess Richt will do some more commericials…….. Georgia…the biggest flop in college football this season….suck it up Ga. fans.

BAMAFAN….so…Ole Miss can beat Florida in their own stadium but since we have JPW (who mind you has done nothing this season but win) and they have Tebow, they are in a different league? Give me a break. JPW has been a team leader all season and while he has not been asked to “win” games for us, he also doesnt make any stupid mistakes to win it. But since Tebow is on the other sideline, you all the sudden think the old JPW will come back. Sorry to disappoint you but BAMA can stop UF and Tim Tebow. You will see Saturday. Do us REAL Bama fans a favor and go buy and orange and blue shirt and become an AU fan!

Like most non gator fans I am pulling for Bama That’s what happens when gator fans are not only poor losers - but also poor winners.

I’d love to see Bama go undefeated and win the NC.

There’s a real chance The Bama D can hold Florida’s O but I’m afraid the bad guys will win this one. I think UF has just too much O talent - and as you point out, a pretty darn good D as well.

Good Luck Bama & Roll Tide !!!

Excellent pre-game summary of pertinent facts. Both defenses will step it up a notch in this game. The difference in the game will be the play of the QB’s. Gators win by 10 (27 to 17).

Fla. will probably beat Bama, but I will be pulling for Bama. I wouldn’t pull for Fla. if they were playing the Taliban.

If it gets down to a Fla. and Okla. National Champ. game I will be pulling for Okla. Fla. is the only SEC team I never pull for. I grew up in S. Fla. and had the good sense to leave and attend UGA. In the Dooley days we never lost to Fla. 2 years in a row and for 25 years we dominated Fla. CMR needs to get it together or down the road he will be the next Fulmer. Like Tenn. UGA people are not going to tolerate losing games to big rivals.

Florida will win for 3 reasons. First, Tebow can win under pressure. JPW craps himself when hurried. Second, Florida’s special teams will be all over punt coverages..and yes..Bama will be punting a lot. Third, the kicking game. If it comes down to field goals, Tiffin will choke. Florida wins this game by at least 17.

@ GATORMAN-Nice post. I would argue Auburn as being the biggest dissapointment this year and not my Bulldogs, but in a sense they can be lumped together in that aspect.

However as a DAWG fan I can take my jabs with the best of them and give credit to the teams and fans that have beat us fair and square.

-However I don’t give credit to your statement of Stafford never playing in the dome.

-Chick Filet Bowl 2006 vs. VT took place in the DOME. I was there and if memory serves me right Staff was the QB.

“Mr. College Football,” you are a blowhard. Trust me when I say this. Did you have to mention that YOU were on a conference call when Bama players expressed frustration about hearing of Florida’s speed? Nothing like a little self-promotion.

McCoy deserves the Heisman plain and simple although he will not win it. Bradford or Tebow will unfortunately. However, without McCoy, Texas would have won five or six games max as there is talent, but not like at Florida with Harvin and all the rb’s who run faster than heck or OU where Bradford is about to have two 1000 yard rushers along with the nations number 2 tight end. Also, McCoy has been taken out of games anywhere from very early 3rd quarter to mid-4th quarter so he can not keep piling up the numbers like Tebow and Bradford as those coaches like to run up the scores on folks.
Please get off the SEC plays better defense too as where are those defenses when they play out of conference and get points piled up on them. I have been saying for weeks that UGA plays no defense and yet their numbers still look good due to playing teams like South Carolina, Vandy, Auburn, etc.

Tony, I’m going to give you a pass on today’s SEC’s love fest since it is here in ATL.

UF will win this game due to their rigorous Out-of-Conference Schedule they played. (2 ACC wins, impressive!). The Citadel would probably finish somewhere in the middle of the SEC.

The loser of this game should drop immediately out of the top 15.

Does anyone know if The Citadel played Gardner Webb this year, if so, who won? I can’t get this thought out of my head. If UGAG played GW would the score be 45-45 or 10-10, and who would win in OT?

JB,

Upon what facts do you base your statement “Bama has got to be the most overrated late season no. 1 I’ve ever seen”? You obviously didn’t base it on actual FACTS. Do you know what a fact is or do you just have a nilly willy opinion based on your dislike of the Tide?

Allow me to help you out with some facts. As you can see above we have the #3 rated defense in the nation. As you can very plainly see from the stats above our special teams are right up there at the very top along with Florida. We are 2nd in the conference in rushing. We are 11th in passing offense in the conference. Why? Because we haven’t freaking needed to pass all season. There isn’t anybody who has been able to shut down our running game. And while Florida may very well win the game they absolutely will not be able to shut down our running game. Aint gonna happen.

Bama can pass the ball if we really want to or need to but the fact is we just don’t need to. If you don’t believe that you need to look at Bama’s passing stats the previous 2 years under JPW. He had more 300 yd games than someone more heralded like Stafford. He is Bama’s all time leading passer in virtually every category with stats dwarfing super bowl winning qbs like Starr, Stabler, and Namath. I’m sure you’ve heard of those guys.

We’ve had 1 close game the entire season against an LSU team that was more jacked for that one game than any regular season game in their history. Ole Miss and Kentucky scored consolation tds late to give the appearance that those games were close.

It also seems to me that I’ve seen lots of no. 1s that had at least 1 loss and the champion last year finished with 2 losses. We’ve yet to lose even 1 game so how is that overrated relative to all the teams that were late season no. 1s with at least 1 loss? I’m trying to understand your logic but it just doesn’t make any sense.

I’m anxious to see what “FACTS” you have to back up your dumb@ss statement that we are the most overrated late season no. 1 you’ve ever seen.

Five more things you need to know.

One - Tulane, Arkansas State, Western Kentucky, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Auburn and Tennessee? What do they have in common? They all lost to Alabama and none of them are bowl eligible. In fact 7 of the 12 teams that Alabama played this year or more than half of their schedule were teams that will not be playing come bowl season.

Two - Incidentally 9 of the 12 teams that Florida played will be bowling. 7-0 against teams that don’t qualify for a bowl game versus 8-1 against teams that do.

Three - Gtech justed scored another running TD on the Uga.

Four - The Bear is really dead like Elvis.

Five - UF woman are hot.

The only thing you need to know is that Bama will win the game and shut everyone for Florida up. I like Alabama with a chip on it’s shoulder and something to prove.
Gators, they are gonna run down your throats and wear the defense out and then start pounding in the second half. Of course UF will score a few times but Bama’s D will hold it’s own. This game will be close, but Bama prevails.

By JP

As a Gator fan, naturally I want UF to win, but think this game is even on paper. 12-0 is still 12-0. Bama hasn’t done it with smoke and mirrors. What I like about Bama is that they are relentless. They just play 100% until the end of the game. You play them and they may be ahead 7-0 at the end of one quarter, then 14-3 at the end of the first half. By the 4th quarter they are up 24-6 and just cruising. To me at least, a really good team to watch. if Bama wins, it definitely is NOT and upset in my book.

I’m still heartbroken over the loss Saturday. The D and special teams were horrid! What a waste of talent on offense.

Anyways, I don’t see my dawgs in this game for atleast 5 years. We probably won’t win 8 games next year and UF will win em’ all. My only hope is that somehow Notre Dame will take Urban Crier and give my dawgs a chance in the future. But I’m sure the new UF coach will start another win streak against us like Spurrier, Zook and Meyer did. I’ll give the Gators credit, they play with heart and desire, and my dawgs look like they would rather be doing something else, like getting drunk downtown.

Special team play on both sides will be interesting. The nod here should go Gators. Desire, the intangible that suits up early or gets chewed out at the half goes Red Elephants. Tiny Tim Tebow vs John Parker Bubba Wilson : Within a ring lined with 10 foot chainlink fence, no holds barred and winner take all, Tebow prevails. But this is football. We have two seasoned QB’s in the Dome. The guy that makes the fewest mental blunders gets the edge. Looks like a draw here, but if I were a betting man, I’d lose my house on John Parker Bubba Wilson having the better day…Saban likes ball control. Meyer likes to strike fast. And speaking of defense, Mr. Spikes can cause havoc in Alabama’s run game. But for 60 minutes..? By all accounts really, Florida should win this one. Just don’t tell that to the Red Elephants…

Gentlemen——This is a gentle reminder to all Crimson Tide and Gator fans who frequent these AJC sports blogs to mind your manners and your good sportsmanship P’s and Q’s.

The universities of Alabama and Florida have enjoyed an excellent and hard-hitting rivalry over the past 19 season. It is not a rivalry rooted in geography (e.g. Alabama and Auburn) or in irrational dislike (e.g. Florida and Georgia), rather it is a rivalry that evolved from the two teams being the two biggest boys on the block who met with fair frequency to decide the SEC conference championship over the last 19 years.

This year’s SEC championship game will be the 6th time in the 17 years of SEC championship games that the Tide and Gators have met in the SEC CG. Three previous Gator-Tide SEC championship match-ups determined one of the teams to play in the national championship. It is a virtual certainty that the 2008 SEC champion will play for this season’s BCS title. That’s a remarkable record.

Unlike other SEC and regional rivalries, there is no real history of unsportsmanlike conduct by rival fans. Only hard-hitting football.

So, I ask all Tide and Gator fans to express their pride in their team loudly and enthusiastically, minimize the name-calling and obscene trash-talking, and show the respect to the other university, coaches, players, alumni and fans which their team’s record and history have earned.

Roll Tide, and Go Gators!

See you in Atlanta on Saturday.

Hold em,

I definitely agree that we’re down this year, especially with UT, Aub., and LSU all having qb issues. But those are all strong programs and will be back in very short order.

Brandon Spikes needs to have a monster if they are gonna stop Bama. As I see it they will be missing 2 defensive tackles. That’s not good going up against our O-line. I don’t think they will be “all over our running game” if they are missing 2 dts. We’re just gonna do what we’ve done all right. We’re gonna line up and run right at them. If they stop us they win. If they don’t they won’t.

Even though the SEC is down I’m not totally convinced of all these giddy stats posted by Big 12 offenses. A couple of years ago in 05-06 season we played Texas Tech in the cotton bowl. They were averaging something like 45 pts a game just like today. We beat them 13-10 and completely shut down their offense. I believed the hype and quite frankly didn’t think we could stop them or even slow them down. Glad I was dead wrong. And this was a Sheila coached team that shut them down. After that game I just don’t believe the hype about how great these big 12 offenses are. Curiously enough their gauddy regular season stats also seem to come down a lot in bowl games but everyone seems to forget that the next regular season when they all start averaging 45 pts a game again.

As a Dawg fan, I am in the 13th ring of Dante’s inferno. I hate the gators with a passion that goes back to the 60’s. I used to respect Bama and their fans, but after a 9 years of not being worth a flip, they have gotten as obnoxious as the gators.

Congrats to the Tide for improving from 6-6 and a loss to UGA, to go 12-0 and kicking our butts. Congrats to Fla for improving on their 9-4 record in 2007 and a loss to UGA, to go 11-1 and kicking our butts.

Bama seems to have everything lined up for them to win the SEC championship this year. They win games when they don’t score an offensive td, they win games when they get a game winning fg blocked, but at the end of the day …they just win. Not flashy with 400yards of offense and 63 points, but they win.Fla has some key injuries and will make mistakes at the worst possible time and Bama is good enough to make them pay. And I think Bama will win Sat.

In 1992, SEC champion Alabama defeated Miami to become the consensus national champion.

In 1995, SEC champion Florida played in the Bowl Alliance championship, losing to Nebraska.

In 1996, SEC champion Florida defeated Florida State to win the Bowl Alliance championship.

In 2008, Alabama or Florida will again play in the SEC championship game, and the winner is a virtual lock to play in the BCS title game.

Now, that’s a worthy rivalry.

I lived in the north in Big 10 country and our “big time” local paper did not @ss kiss all the other Big 10 teams like the AJC and it’s writers do. You people need to get a life…seriously.

I like our chances. We are not a sexy team. We are just going to line up and challenge you on every play. We are going to run the ball, punch you in the face and our D will challenge Tebow & Co. on every play. We are mentally and physically tough. We are solid in the kicking game. We are going to pound, pound, pound away until Fl gets tired. If we lose it will be because Fl is the better team. There will be no shame if we give 100% on every play. That is Alabama football. May the best team win.

No matter which SEC teams plays OU in the BCS, they will slow down their offense significantly. Big-12 schools can light up the scoreboard, but only because they DO NOT have defenses worth a crap out there and that is the only reason they have big numbers.

Gator G,

Apparently we were watching 2 different games when you finally beat us for the first time since 96. As I remember it we were trailing 14-13 with 5 minutes left and we driving for the winning score when JP threw a pick 6 to Reggie Nelson that made it 21-13. UF scored another with a minute left after another int to make it 28-13. Hardly a shellacking considering you were on the ropes with minutes left in the game against a Bama team down 21 schollies at the time. But at least you got a small measure of revenge for the 2005 humiliation in Tuscaloosa 31-3.

As for Heismans what the hell does that have to do with anything? Bama prides itself on the team first concept as opposed to individual awards. Its a point of pride to Bama fans that we don’t have Heismans. We only have championships. Do you want to compare number of national titles with me. Yeah! I didn’t think so!!

But if we want to look at individual awards lets look at how many Outland trophys you have compared to Bama, lets compare how many all time all-americans you have compared to bama.

BTW, how many qbs at your great qb factory have gone on to win super bowls. We have 3. How many again do you have? Just curious. Incidentally, where is Danny Weurfel these days? Did he go on to pro fame and win a super bowl and all that? Surely he did. Didn’t he?

This year the the four best defenses in the SEC where bama, florida south carolina and tennessee. except UT offense was so bad they struggled to win games. I question the any big 12 defenses because in all of those big games they had this year only one time did both teams not score 30 point and that was ok state and texas. While OU’s offense is strong there D is questionable 45 -texas, 41 Ok state, 31 kansas and 35 by kansas state, and a few other teams had 28. If OU plays florida it they will not be able to stop UF offense this is assuming “big game” bob’s team doesnt choke another conference title game.

Atlanta Gator,

Those are good stats regarding the Bama-UF series. Do you know what the alltime head to head series record is? I’m kind of curious because I don’t think we’ve played UF that much. I’ve seen it before and while I know we’re ahead in the alltime series I don’t remember the records. I just remember that I was surprised that in our 2 histories that we hadn’t played that many games. UF was never much of a geophraphic rival to us in the past. I think Uf had UGA, Auburn, and of course FSU as its 3 big rivals while we had Auburn, Tennessee, and LSU to a lesser degree.

G8R Grad,

Bear has been dead for 25 years. Bama fans got over that a long time ago. With all due respect I think its the rest of the SEC that needs to get over it. Other fans just love to talk that silliness about living in the past with Bear Bryant and all that stuff. Most Bama fans today never even saw Bryant coach. You would have to be in your 40s to remember the man’s coaching with any clarity. We don’t live in the past with the bear. We’re just proud of the lasting legacy that he built at bama and he is the face of the program. But keep in mind that bama was the premier team in the south long before the bear arrived and won national titles with 2 different coaches before the bear got there. As a matter of fact Bear is but one of 4 different coaches to win national titles at Bama. Bear is the biggest name in Bama football but he sure as hell isn’t the only one.

bama12titles——You are correct. Until the SEC started division play in 1992, Alabama and Florida met rarely under the old 6-game conference schedules. Now, we play twice every six years, plus the relatively regular meetings in the SEC championship game. Eleven of the 33 Florida-Alabama games have been played since 1990. The two teams only played 20 games in the 74 seasons between 1916 and 1989.

The all-time series record still favors Alabama, 20-13. The head-to-head since 1990 favors the Gators, 7-4.

G8r grad,

You’re missing the point. Its always been the Bama philosophy that the team comes first whether it be bear, Stallings, or now Saban who uses 3 tailbacks and a qb who just manages the game. We’re just not interested in promoting 1 player, just championships. That’s all. The bear isn’t relevant. He’s just an icon in the same way the Reagan is an icon to Republicans and conservatives. The man is dead but conservatives still mention his views when they talk about politics. Get it? There aint no diggin up the bear but he is an icon and that’s pretty much it in the same way that even today Spurrier is still thought of and talked about in Fla. circles even though gator fans are very happy with Meyer. Spurrier built the UF program. He is the one that turned fla. from a traditional punching bag into national prominence and 20 years from now he will probably still be a fla. icon over Meyer for the simple reason that Spurrier made Fla. football what it is. He laid the foundation. And even though bear didn’t lay the foundation at bama he was the most successful coach winning half of bama’s 12 national titles.

Saw some Bama fan at the Clemson game who didnt need anymore beer. Dude was puking in the wall urinal during the 2nd quarter. He was hardcore though. Looked like the same guy who was passed out against a tree on the Quad back in 2006 for the Ole Siss game in Tuscaloosa.

Just reported: Gators quarterback Tim Tebow told the Sentinel on Tuesday that he’ll “probably” petition to the NFL draft advisory committee to determine his potential status should he decide to leave school early.

What, exactly, does petitioning to determine potential staus mean?

As a Vol fan, it would not bother me if both teams lost, but the fact is this is an awesome matchup for to just watch and drink and eat. I think the game should go to the Gators just because Tebow and Company are just steamrolling everyone, but I do not see the numbers being put up by either team…BOTH defenses are great. It has the potential for being one hellz of a game.

As for the ones feeling inclined to smack talk about how superior the Big 12 and SoCal are…bring it on. As I recall, all of them have at least one loss. We would be delighted to add to the number.

G8r grad,

It just means he’s going to find out according to NFL scouts where he will likely be taken in the draft, whether it be the 1st or 2nd pick or wherever in the 1st round. I would think that he will likely be in the top 5 players taken if not the 1st or 2nd and that’s probably what he wants to know in order to make his decision.

This just in. Just got back into the office and heard on 680 the fan that it does indeed look like Tubberville will be gone. The reason they think that is because AU is now saying they will take a week to make a final decision. That is quite an insult to Tommy Tubb and all that he has accomplished. They called back in all his assistants who were out on the road recruiting so it looks like its the end for tubbs.

As a bama fan I would love to see him go for the simple reason that I think he’s a helluva coach. I think its crazy for Auburn to let him go. He beat his biggest rival 6 straight, had one bad year and a failed experiment with the spread and now they want him gone. Unbelievable!

As a bama fan I can personally attest to the fact that you don’t want to go through a coaching carousel the way we did with Dubose, Fran, and Sheila.

G8r Grad,

If Fla. wins a national title he’s definitely gone and personally I think he should go. He wouldn’t have anything left to prove. Even if they stumble against my Bama boys or in a national title game he still should go. He would be a top 5 pick no question. The only ? to me is whether he would be 1,2,3,4 or 5.

Given his status though I think it would be best for him if he kind of sat out the Bama game. Aint no sense foolishly risking injury if he’s going to be a lottery pick. 2 Florida def tackles tore their knees up just last week and will miss the game. The wise thing is obviously for him to just sit this one out. One can always hope can’t they?

Tony you left off Colt McCoy’s 10 rushing TD’s he’s got 500 yards+ rushing and 10 TD’s.

HE IS the Texas offense (though granted Tebow really is Floridas too). He’s every bit as deserving as Tim Tebow this year.

Tebow is a much better QB this year, but I don’t think he wins it twice in a row.

I haven’t seen much of Brantley. Just seen him in some spot duty. I do recognize he was very highly rated blue chip coming out of high school but its just hard to imagine anyone being as good as Tebow, especially running the ball. I have heard he will be a better, more prolific passer.

Buck and Kincaide are saying that an Auburn source is wanting to talk to Mike Leach and Petrino. Leach is a good coach but I just can’t see why Auburn would want Petrino. He’s not in Tubberville’s league by any means. JMHO.

Remember when Fla State won the National Championship with one loss even though they lost to Notre Dame who also only had one loss because the thinking was Fla State lost to a better team (Notre Dame) than teh team Notre Dame lost to (Boston College)??

By that thinking, even if Fla beats Alabama giving both teams one loss, should Alabama still be ranked ahead of FLA becuase Alabama wil have lost te a better team (Florida) than the team Florida lost to (Mississippi)?

Damn, my head hurts now.

I bet you wish I would never brought that up.

Stating that this is going to be a great matchup is understatement of the year. However, I have a feeling it’s going to be a blowout. Every “big” game this year has been a blowout, except the OU/UT game in Dallas earlier this year.

Alabama has the formula for winning a champtionship: A strong defense and a physical running game. As someone said earlier they just love to pound you until you are worn out.

On the other side, while everyone talks about Florida’s offense. It’s actually their defense that’s keyed their big win streak. Just think about how many TD drives they’ve started in their opponents territory. They started like 4 scoring drivs INSIDE UGA’s 50. That turnover margin is the key.

As to the bloggers who criticize the SEC. Remember, DEFENSE wins champtionships. I’m from Texas, I love the offense the Big12 puts up, but their is no way either Chokelahoma or UT puts up 30+ points on either of the physical tough defenses of Alabama or Florida, unless it’s Florida winning something like 49-30. Alabama would win 30-17 over either of those two.

Oh yeah tommy tuberville lost his job so where are all the recruits going now?? if anybody thinks that alabama is overated then you need to be taking some jobs in the bcs they recieve all of the votes. i will agree that florida is the better team but lets see how they match up. Jimmy with all due respect STFU. You said it. you’re from Texas, WTF do yo know about defense. The SEC is not much better than Big 12 D. Both suck. Neither would score more than 14 score on a real good D.

By Jimmy

To the guy posted under, “Hey Jimmy:”

So since i’m from Texas I don’t know anything about defense? Brilliant observation.

The defenses of the SEC are much better than that of Big12, historically and presently. Chokelahoma always blows their bowl games due to a lack of D, and Florida or Bama will drive their offense right into the ground.

Bamafan, Your Tide defense has been tested in some tough games and came out victorious. That Gator D has never really been tested; they’ve just looked good because the Florida offense put teams into deep holes and forced them to take chances offensively. If this game comes down to tough defense in the 4th quarter, Bama will win.

Florida’s weak link is Tebow — should he get shaken up. Florida’s offense is in total disarray if you knock him off his game plan. Alabama’s number one priority should be to hit Tebow as many times as possible — it would be worth the flag even if they get there late a few times. Lord knows the Gators did it to Stafford (hit him late) the entire GA-FLA game. Generally, Florida plays dirty across the board — reminds me of how Miami used to play. If Bama wants to stay in the game, they’ve got to be willing to play that brand of football. Fight fire with fire.
