Georgia Tech will shock Georgia

Hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving and got their batteries charged up for the last two weeks of the regular season. After what happened at the end of 2007, I’m convinced that we still have at least one and maybe two shockers ahead of us. One of them might happen on Saturday.

Went 7-3 last week because I picked Vanderbilt over Tennessee, LSU over Ole Miss, and Maryland over Florida State. That gives us a record of 83-47 on the year. So let’s get on with the Holiday version of the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Georgia Tech (8-3) at Georgia (9-2): On paper, Georgia should win this one. The Bulldogs are playing at home. There is more overall talent except on the defensive front, where Tech has an edge with Michael Johnson (In case you haven’t noticed, he’s a grown man). Georgia has a chance to win its 10th game and all but lock up a spot in the Capital One Bowl on New Year’s Day if they can beat Georgia Tech for the eighth straight time. All logic says go with Georgia. But why do I get the feeling that Georgia Tech is more excited about playing this game than Georgia? The Bulldogs have just gotten by in its last two games against Kentucky and Auburn. And it seems like something went out of this team when it got its collective butts kicked against Florida on Nov. 1. Georgia Tech showed what is possible when the Yellow Jackets rolled up 472 yards rushing against Miami. It says here that Georgia Tech pulls off the upset and Paul Johnson puts some life back into the rivalry. Georgia Tech 28, Georgia 24.

2. Auburn (5-6) at Alabama (11-0): All the pressure is on Alabama to break its six-game losing streak and stay No. 1 until next week’s SEC championship game with Florida. If Auburn’s offense was just okay, it would be tempting to pick the Tigers because coach Tommy Tuberville has always been pretty good in these kinds of games. But Alabama is so good on the offensive and defensive lines that they have the ability to wear teams down. That is what will happen in Saturday’s Iron Bowl and Alabama will march to 12-0 and a date next week in Atlanta. Alabama 24, Auburn 14.

3. Florida (10-1) at Florida State (8-3): Getting out of Tallahassee with a win has never been easy for the Gators. And when they are playing the following week for the SEC championship, it’s been virtually impossible. Five times the Gators have gone to Tallahassee the week before the SEC championship game. Florida is 1-3-1 in those games. Florida State impressed me with its 37-3 road win at Maryland last week. But the Seminoles just don’t have enough weapons to keep pace with the speedy Gators. Florida 31, Florida State 21.

4. Oklahoma (10-2) at Oklahoma State (9-2): Earlier this week Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he was done politicking for the BCS voters. That’s because if the Sooners lose to the Cowboys Saturday night, argument will be moot. And the Cowboys know how to play this game tough in Stillwater. In 2006 Oklahoma hung on 27-21. In 2004 the Cowboys missed a tying field goal at the buzzer and lost 38-35. In 2002 Oklahoma State knocked off No. 3 Oklahoma 38-28. With quarterback Zac Robinson, wide receiver Dez Byrant and running back Kendall Hunter (130.36 ypg), the Cowboys are one of the most balanced teams in the country. Oklahoma invested a lot of energy into last week’s win over Texas Tech. Is there an upset here? I was tempted to say yes until I discovered that Oklahoma State had the No. 105 pass defense in the country (259.27 ypg). Oklahoma 31, Oklahoma State 24.

5. Oregon (8-3) at Oregon State (8-3): A lot of people are going to be watching the annual Civil War. A bunch of them will be pulling for Oregon. Take the Rose Bowl, please. If Oregon State wins the Beavers will go to their first Rose Bowl since 1965. Normally that would be a great story line but waiting in Pasadena will be Penn State, which beat the Beavers 45-14 back in September. Try to sell that game. If Oregon State loses, then Southern Cal will go to the Rose Bowl if it can beat UCLA next week. Mike Riley has done a very good job with Oregon State after starting 0-2. The Beavers may be without running back Quizz Rodgers, the Pac-10 leader in rushing (113.9 ypg). Still, I like Oregon State. Oregon State 24, Oregon 20.

6. Virginia (5-6) at Virginia Tech (7-4): Virginia Tech started its season with a 27-22 loss to East Carolina and there were moments this season when the Hokies appeared to be in real trouble. But Frank Beamer showed why he is a future Hall of Fame coach. If Virginia Tech beats Virginia in Blacksburg, the Hokies will go to the ACC championship game for the third time in four years. Georgia Tech is pulling for Virginia because a win by the Cavaliers, who have lost eight of nine to Virginia Tech, sends the Yellow Jackets to Tampa. The Hokies are not going to lose at home with this much on the line. Virginia Tech 21, Virginia 14.

7. South Carolina (7-4) at Clemson (6-5): There is a lot riding on this game for Clemson and interim coach Dabo Swinney. A win makes Clemson bowl eligible, which would be a pretty big deal after all the trouble this program has endured this season. Tiger athletics director Terry Don Phillips likes Swinney and would like to be able to make a strong case to hire him. I just like the way that QB Cullen Harper (Alpharetta) and running back James Davis (Atlanta) are starting to play now that they know the end of their college careers are near. It the last game in Death Valley for all the Clemson seniors and I think they will make it one to remember. Clemson 14, South Carolina 13.

8. Kentucky (6-5) at Tennessee (4-7): It’s going to be a very emotional day in Knoxville. It will be “Phillip Fulmer Day” as Fulmer coaches his final game for the Vols. Tennessee won’t go to a bowl but the seniors do have a chance to end their careers with a win and that should be motivation enough. Defensive coordinator John Chavis, who has done yeoman’s work this season, will have his guys finely tuned for this game. Kentucky will find it very difficult to score and Fulmer closes 17 years as the head Volunteer on a positive note. Tennessee 21, Kentucky 10.

9. Maryland (7-4) at Boston College (8-3): A week ago Maryland controlled its destiny in the ACC Atlantic. After a 37-3 loss to Florida State, the Terps can now only play the role of spoiler. If Boston College wins, the Eagles go to the ACC championship game. If Maryland wins, Florida State makes the trip to Tampa. Maryland has a puncher’s chance because Boston College will be without quarterback Chris Crane (shoulder). Freshman Dominique Davis is talented but is prone to turnovers. I think BC plays it close to the vest because of the nation’s No. 5 defense (269.64 ypg). The Eagles win and go to the ACC championship game for the second straight year. Boston College 17, Maryland 10.

10. Syracuse (3-8) at Cincinnati (9-2): Cincinnati has been a member of the Big East for only four seasons, but the Bearcats can go to their first BCS bowl (probably Orange) in history with a win today over the Orange. Syracuse upset Notre Dame (if you can call any win over Notre Dame an upset) last week 24-23 and would like to send Greg Robinson, their lame-duck coach, out with another win. The Bearcats win because they are at home and because they have a hot quarterback. Tony Pike completed 26 of 32 passes for 309 yards in last week’s 28-21 win over Pittsburgh. He will have a very good day against the nation’s 102nd defense (414.73 ypg). Cincinnati 31, Syracuse 10.

1) Regardless of who wins, there are now TWO major college programs in Georgia. Paul Johnson should win national coach of the year if Tech can pull this off. Jackets 31-24

2)Bama starts holding up fingers in this rivalry 41-9

3) Florida is the best team in the USA .Gators pour it on the ‘Noles 48-17

4) OSU - the best team money ($100 million) can rent. But OU wins big 45-17

5) If the ‘Beavs can handle USC, UO should be a cakewalk. Stae in the Rose 31-28

6) Cavaliers (the only school in the ACC named after a crappy subcompact sedan) ,deliver Tech a way early Christmas present with a 14-10 upset.

7) The ‘Ol ball coach looks downright mortal these days. hate to say it ,but Spurrier looked less clueless in the NFL. Tigers win the Who Cares Bowl 23-17.

8) Both Phil Fulmer AND Rich Brooks should have retired while their teams were attending New Years Day bowls regularly…Tennessee wins 3-2

9) Ralph Friedgen ALWAYS looks like he just had too much Thanksgiving dinner, buthis teams play hard every down. Terps Win ! Terps Win ! 24-17

10) Who Cares ? Syracuse should be I-AA and Cinncinati almost blew a 3 score lead (with less than 2 minutes to play) against West Virginia a couple of weeks ago.Either team would get killed by any team in the SEC. Somebody has to win because we have overtime now ,so what the Heck - Cinncinati 31-3

Is there anything more useless than reading predictions from people who don’t know anymore about it than the rest of us. I would say this even if you picked UGA. I am completely wore out with the excessive predictions from everyone and their brother …along with the useless jabber about the Heisman and the BCS joke.

It’s going to be a close one Tony. UGA should win out with all the top five classes they rake in every year. The Jackets are a very young team but they will not go down without a fight. When you carry Georgia player arrests forward from year to year, nearly half of the Georgia players on the field during a given game have been arrested or charged with a crime. Richt should award little handcuff helmet stickers for each arrest. Some players would have two or three. This behavior is a disgrace to the University. If Adams weren’t such a twit, he would do something about it.

One thing I’ve never understood. When an AJC writer pens a column, it always has a positive slant toward Ga Tech, and a negative slant toward UGA. Considering our recruiting over the last five or six years, and the fact that we’ve beaten the gnats for seven years in a row, it would seem that the articles would be a little more balanced. Perhaps that’s why all my fellow accounting students told me that if I wanted an easy A, take a journalism class.

What has UGA done other than lead CFA in penalties, blowout losses in its biggest games, and the worst specialty teams in the history of college football. It Tech doesn’t turn it over they win easy just like all the other big games Dogs have played. I wouldn’t consider a Tech win an upset at all. They are better coached and have much better fronts on both side of the ball.

Even Uga, a freaking dog, gets their panties in a bunch. It is a pathetic sight. I guess losing 7 in a row, 14 out of the past 17, and 29 out of the past 40 would do that to anybody. Eight straight has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?

Actually Georgia is ranked 1st in the SEC in punt return yardage and has one of the SEC’s best punters in Brian Mimbs. “Worst special teams in the history of college football” might be a bit of an exaggeration Techie. Our kickoff coverage has been an obvious concern this year, but since Georgia Tech’s efforts at returning kicks has been equally futile (11th in the ACC) I am not too concerned about it tomorrow.

Sorry to let the facts interrupt your little dreamworld. Keep pounding that chest Techie. #8 will be the sweeetest of all.

By Oledawg

November 28, 2008 1:15 PM | Link to this

Tony-Since I’ve beaten you on predictions every time (except 1) I appreciate you picking the bugs. Looks like I’ll win another one now. While your thoughts are in the right place, the rest of your brain took a holiday. If you suddenly think the coaches and players are sitting in Athens counting their victories instead of practicing against Paul’s type of football and with more players recovering from recent injuries and are available together and practiced as a team for two weeks for the first time in weeks, you are oviously hoping instead of predicting with facts. You left the entire UGA Offense out of the equation. Two weeks for Staff and other QBs to practice routes with receivers so that by now they all are playing from the same set of pants? That’s to be ignored? Good God, man… I want some of that stuff you are smoking. Couldn’t you at least explain that you think the offense will drop dead running out on the field? Fullbacks practicing precise leverage to open Knowshon a hole, receivers running new and precise patterns that GT has never seen, special teams putting together new plays with plenty of time to practice them, Defense practicing the triple option to limit how many running plays GT can run among other activities should at least give you pause. New, talented young players in old positions just for kicks?

Yes, I’ve thought from the start of the season that Paul Johnson could produce a viable team and have picked them routinely during the season. That’s why I’ve beaten you most of the time, Tony. Now you suddenly wake up on Tech and fall asleep on the Dawgs! Yes, he is capable of throwing a few surprise plays that he will get away with, but you won’t see them until after halftime since he doesn’t want Martinez to discover and defend in the 2nd half. And there are only a certain # of surprises he can run. If you don’t think the bugs have shown over 95% of their plays this year, you would be wrong. They still will make yards vs the D with old plays, but not enough to carry the game vs the UGA Offense. Now, I know that you are aware of these differences, etc., but to reach out and tag GT to win the game? Better be careful or we may begin to refer to you as Boner Turnhart.

We expect you and Bob to make coin-toss guesses on CSS, but Tee Martin was a surprise. You left Mark all alone with UGA almost as if you all are relinquishing the winner spot for the year. We thank you on behalf of Mark who sounded really bewildered at your choices.

No one has seen the UGA Offense as good as the one walking on the field tomorrow. You and other naysayers are in for a surprise if you honestly think this O is not going to make a huge showing and I’ve never stated scores or how badly the Dawgs might beat an opponent this year. I will now. Dawgs-38, Bugs-21. Staff, MoMass and Knowshon have early Christmas gifts planned for the last home game this year. Throw Green in the mix with all the receivers and backup running backs and you may get a glimpse of the error of your ways. I know, you have already decided that the Dawgs are not approaching this game with the same sense of rivalry as in the past and the bugs want revenge, but competition is there in this Dawg squad. “Rivalry” comes from “rive” which means competition. They may not be jumping up and down in the kennel prior to the hunt, but when they are turned loose on the field “Hunt” will be uppermost on their agenda. Believe it from someone who cautions against overoptimism. While it will be a battle the entire game, these Dawgs will come to hunt. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Here is what you will see on Saturday:

Georgia beats out Tech …and then we get to see the writers start talking about the hawks, like they never even saw the game or remember their prediction. They have been picking Tech for years, hoping they can have a series to write about, a rivalry if you will. 1- I have to disagree Tony, if, and it’s a big if, UGA’s young O line opens some holes and protects Stafford UGA wins. I believe the line will do a good job and I don’t think Tech can cover Green and Mo-Mass. UGA needs to use the pass to open up the running game. 2- Auburn doesn’t have it this year and ‘Bama is a power team, both on O and D. I think the Tide will wear down AU and pour it on in the second half. 3- I am goimg out on a limb on this one. FSU has the speed to compete, their D line can be awesome, and they can look like crap! I believe the good ‘Noles show up tomorrow. Upset special, and no, I am not betting this one! 4- Agree. 5- Agree. 6- Agree. 7- SOS pulls a rabbit out of the hat and wins this one. 8- Sorry Gen Nyland, I like that QB for UK. UK wins. 9- Maryland wins against a frosh QB. 10- Syracuse, are You kidding! You are really going out on a limb there Tony. Why not pick USC over ND?

All you people complaining about all the AJC writers picking Tech or putting a positive spin on an article about Tech are ridiculous. It’s been happening for a few weeks, otherwise this newspaper kisses UGAs a**. UGA loses and they still get more coverage than a Tech win. Not to mention, that stupid ‘know your dawg’ section….whine all you want because they are actually recognizing who the better team is for once.

This Friday’s completely fallible predictions——

(1) Georgia Tech has exceeded expectations for this season, while Georgia has disappointed the conference and title hopes of its fans. Tech players are playing with heart; UGA players are playing like their season has already ended. The Dawgs have got greater talent on paper, and seven years of history on their side. Does anyone smell the potential for an upset? Still, I pick the Dawgs over the Jackets by 10. Why? Because I don’t think the Jackets are quite ready for prime time just yet.

(2) Well, it’s not a certainty, but the outcome of this year’s Alabama-Auburn is pretty damn close. The Tide over the Tigers by 14+. The streak ends at six.

(3) Here’s the deal, Tony: Spurrier wanted to win SEC championships. Meyer wants to win them all. The cited stat is ancient history. The Gators over the Seminoles by 17.

(4) Oklahoma State as a program is getting better every season, but Oklahoma as a team is peaking this season. Sooners over Cowboys by 14.

(5) Oregon State is due for a Rose Bowl bid after nearly three decades of futility. Beavers beat the Ducks by 10.

(6) Virginia has shown signs of life, but Virginia Tech knows how to grind a lesser team in a close game. Hokes over the Cavs by 10.

(7) Speaking of futility … South Carolina’s comes to an end on Saturday. The is not Clemson’s year, and Dabo Swinney is not the Tigers’ coach of the future. Gamecocks over the Tigers by 10.

(8) Isn’t there a beer barrel or something at stake here? How bad is Tennessee’s offense? How bad is Kentucky’s defense after injuries? Not sure who the underdog is in this game, but I’ll be cheering for him. LOL

(9) Well after trying to figure out the ACC all season, the only pattern I can discern is that any ACC team I pick is virtually certain to lose against another ACC team. (That’s why I picked Virginia Tech above——because I secretly want UVa to win. But, if I tell you guys, does the pick really count? Does the college football gods really penalize ACC teams that I pick? Never mind … .) Boston College over Maryland by 13. Why? Well, why not? That’s all I got.

(10) Cincinnati could be this year’s Cinderella feel-good story. Syracuse is coming off an emotional upset win that is probably the highlight of the Orangemen’s season. Bearcats over the Orangemen by 17.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win (they usually do).

If Stafford and Moreno cared as much about Georgie football as they did about drinking, dancing, and their draft status, Georgie might have lived up in part to its pre-season hype

however, once again Georgie has absolutely no impact on the national picture and might end up ranked lower than Tech if the Jackets win (they might have to win the ACCC to get a higher rank, though)

for those that put down the ACC conference, note that we are the strongest conference according to Sagarin, and our worst team beat the team that led the SEC East for like 5 weeks

This weekend will tell the story of ACC v SEC, but Tech has already demolished one SEC team this year, so it is ridiculous to make it seem like every SEC team is better than every ACC team. Tech is probably better than all of the SEC (on paper) other than Florida, Bama and Georgie; and Tech should beat Georgie b/c they have more to gain and are trending up while Georgie is trending down

who has Georgie beat this year that is any good? name one team. ASU sucks, almost lost to Kentucky and Auburn. Vandy held tough. Got blown out by Bama and destroyed annihillated and pummelled against Florida. Wow, South Carolina is probably your best win given how crappy Tennessee has played all year.

Tech has blown out Miami, and beat FSU to break that streak. We beat Clemson. all of those teams are better than South Carolina.

Tech already took down two Bulldawgs teams, you will be the third this year!

GT 90, you must have had that Hogan’s Hero’s listening device in the AJC staff room. “Let’s pick the Bees to tick of the Dawgs so they win (loud obnoxious cheering). Oh come on, are you that paranoid. Someone hands you a gift and you are mad cause you don’t like the gift wrap. Geez, and they say Dawg fans are lunatics. Well just goes to show, there are nuts on both sides.

I still say Dawgs by 10 and that is because I think that Johnson has gotten the team to believe in themselves, other than that I would say Dawgs by three touchdowns. Then of course there is the rain, the X-factor. Slows us down a bit, and if you are trying to make a cut, say like an option play, you could slip. Bring the deep cleats.

The reason I have a hard time taking Georgia fans seriously is their priorities are out of whack! (Not to mention most of them never even attended a college) Football is EVERYTHING to them. Forget academics…forget all the other sports at the school…it’s FOOTBALL or nothing! The poor basketball team (which had a great season) couldn’t sell out their games and couldn’t get much support until the end of the season. Not to mention the baseball team.

These people actually had a funeral for a DOG! You’ve got to the kidding me! I believe a Baptist minister did the service. What if the dog was Jewish?

Ok, this is now the 10th person I’ve seen pick Tech. We are so doomed. I’m tempted not to even DVR this game.

Can someone explain to me why there is all this talk about USC making it the the National Title Game even if they don’t win the PAC-10, or possibly two Big XII teams reaching the BCS Title game? Last year, Georgia was basically told that, because you didn’t win your conference, you couldn’t play for the National Title. The way I’m reading this, if your in the PAC-10 or the Big XII, you don’t have to be a conference champion to play for the national title, but if you play in the SEC then God help you you had better win the conference or no BCS Title Game for you.

Bamafan;

Congrats on the very impressive win!

Well the Trojans are puttin’ a whippin’ on the tarnished domers, not that any less was expected. I called it yesterday in the previous column, the Ducks would skin the Beavers and screw us out of our trip to the Bayou, so the Lizards are safe! We’ll have to settle for a 7th consecutive conf title and the umpteenth trip to Pasadena. Not that the Rose Bowl isn’t a nice way to spend new years day bu just not what we were planning when the season started. Fight On!!!

Blake,

You forget that we will be Co-Champions (if) OrSt. can mount a major comeback against the Ducks. As it stands we will win outright now. That aside to answer your question, we would be CO-Champions, our BCS ranking would have allowed us to still play for the NC as a result of the ranking we hold.

By SC Rules!!!

November 29, 2008 11:11 PM | Link to this

blake,

it;s real simple, OrSt. just got RUN by the Ducks so now were the Pac 10 CHAMPIONS OUTRIGHT! Even if the latter hadn’t of happened we would be Co-Champions and as such by our BCSranking been able to play in the NC game. Now that is a moot point as we will play PSU in the Rose Bowl. Thus y’all are SAFE from having to suffer a horrific beating at our hands!!!

Hey Dog fans, It really does not matter which conference is better, ACC versus SEC, but what is important is that Tech just started a long term domination of your Dogs. Paul Johnson will have more of his recruits playing shortly in addition to the great players at Tech now, and we will begin to roll over you with this triple option. You have a year to study under Dooley as to how to defeat the triple option so get going. It will be fun to beat you again next year as you will not have a clue what to do again.

Tony, good call on the Tech game. Amazed you made it. Now when will you write about the ACC beating the SEC 6-4 head to head this season? UF and Bama are 2 teams out of 12. The other 10 are poor to fair at best.

reggie ball,

pay attention to what i wrote! i am not a uga fan! i am simply saying that from what i watched on tv uga was lazy and still played within 3 points. i promise you that if they were playing like they are capable of then gt would have lost.

captain kirk,

an acc team will never have long term domination of any better half sec team get used to it.

forrest,

i agree that the sec only has 2 great teams and the other 10 suck and are still competitve with your elite acc teams.

on a side note bama will beat florida….as sc rules always says “time for grilled lizard”

SC Rules,

I started out not liking you wahtsoever but I have realized that you aren’t the typical USC fan, you give credit where credit is due. I think USC is actually a top 3 team this year and should at least play in the sugar bowl. Oregon State deserves respect too but I think they got lucky beating USC. Most teams that win the NC will lose 1 game. It’s how you recover from a loss that determines if you are a great team or not.
