Oklahoma will knock off No. 2 Texas Tech

There’s three weeks to go in the regular season and I have the feeling we have several more surprises left.

If No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas Tech both win out and finish 13-0, we’ll have a BCS national championship game that most folks will be able to live with. The Big 12 and the SEC have been the two best conferences in the country this season, so matching the undefeated champions would seem to make sense. Shoot, that game might even make the President elect happy and re-think his idea of an eight-team playoff.

Maybe not.

I got bit again by that whacky ACC last week with a 1-3 record. I know somebody has to win that league but for the life of me I can’t predict who. Georgia Tech is back in the mix in the Coastal Division after thumping Miami last night and sending a message to the boys in Athens wearing the Red and Black. The message: “We’re serious about this game and you’d better be, too.”

The other miss was Kentucky-Vandy. The Commodores won that one on the road and became bowl eligible for the first time since 1982. I’m telling you, if Clemson was smart they would hire Bobby Johnson. The only team to beat Vanderbilt (6-4) by more than 10 points this season was Florida (42-14) and right now the Gators are the best team in the land.

Last week’s 6-4 record gives us a mark of 76-44 for the season. So without further ado let’s go to the pre-Thanksgiving edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Texas Tech (10-0) at Oklahoma (9-1): My man Mark Schlabach tells me that Texas Tech is the real deal and will win this game despite the fact that Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is 59-2 at home in Norman. I see an Oklahoma team that is averaging more points per game (51.4 to 47.9) than Texas Tech with a quarterback (Sam Bradford) who has thrown for more touchdowns (38) than anybody in the country. Texas Tech has been a fun team to watch this season but I don’t see them winning on the road in a game with this much at stake. Oklahoma 42, Texas Tech 40.

2. Tennessee (3-7) at Vanderbilt (6-4): Now that Vanderbilt is heading to a bowl, they would like to put a little icing on the cake by beating Tennessee for the state championship. The Volunteers have had a week off to regroup and hopefully play one inspired game for their outgoing coach, Phillip Fulmer. Now that quarterback Chris Nickson is finally healthy, Vanderbilt looks much more comfortable on offense. Tennessee’s offense is anything but comfortable. In fact, it’s painful for others to watch and doesn’t figure to get better against a pretty good Vanderbilt defense. Vanderbilt 17, Tennessee 14.

3. Ole Miss (6-4) at LSU (7-3): One of two things is going to happen with LSU today against Ole Miss. Either the Tigers are going to use last week’s scare by Troy as a wakeup call, or they are just going to mail it in because the SEC championship is now off the table. This game comes down to the quarterbacks. If LSU’s Jarrett Lee continues his fourth quarter performance from last week, when he completed 11 of 14 passes, the Tigers will win. If Jevan Snead of Ole Miss gets hot, he can roll up some yards against a suspect LSU defense. LSU wins a hard fought game at home. LSU 24, Ole Miss 20.

4. The Citadel (4-7) at Florida (9-1): The only thing that is remotely interesting about this game is how long Tim Tebow stays on the field. The Gators need to keep winning impressively but they also want to get rested up for next week’s trip to Florida State. Florida puts this one away early in the second quarter and the drumbeat for Florida State and Alabama starts. Florida 65, The Citadel 0.

5. Clemson (5-5) at Virginia (5-5): Clemson is playing to get bowl eligible. Dabo Swinney is playing for a job. Clemson was pretty impressive last week in a 31-7 win over Duke. Quarterback Cullen Harper is starting to regain last year’s form with 785 yards passing in his last three games. Virginia will be favored a home but I’ve just got a hunch that the Tigers are going to pull the upset. Clemson 20, Virginia 17.

6. Florida State (7-3) at Maryland (7-3): Maryland is 5-0 at home this season and a victory over the Seminoles, combined with a Boston College loss to Wake Forest, will put the Terps in the ACC championship game. Maryland can still clinch the Atlantic Division by winning Saturday against Florida State and on Nov. 29 at Boston College. The key comes down to Maryland QB Chris Turner. If he doesn’t make a bunch of mistakes, the Terps will win. Maryland 24, Florida State 17.

7. Pittsburgh (7-2) at Cincinnati (8-2): Cincinnati impressed me by going on the road the last two weeks and beating West Virginia (26-23) and Louisville (28-20). The Bearcats are now in control in the Big East if they can beat Pittsburgh and Syracuse (2-8). Obviously Pittsburgh, with running back LeSean McCoy (115.89 ypg) provides the biggest challenge over the next two weeks. Cincinnati has never been to a New Year’s Day bowl in its history. Beat Pittsburgh, and the Bearcats will probably spend the Holidays at the Orange Bowl. Cincinnati 28, Pittsburgh 20.

8. Michigan State (9-2) at Penn State (10-1): Joe Paterno, 81, will not play for the national championship this season. But the Nittany Lions can take their coach to the Rose Bowl with a win today at home against Michigan State. No one will say it, but this could very well be Paterno’s last regular season game as the head coach at Penn State. Penn State 24, Michigan State 13.

9. BYU (10-1) at Utah (11-0): Utah doesn’t have very much on the line today, just the Mountain West championship, a berth in a BCS bowl, and a payday of $4.5 million. A loss probably puts the Utes into the Las Vegas or Poinsettia Bowl and Boise State, if it goes undefeated, gets the BCS berth. Brian Johnson is a very good run/pass threat and will take advantage of a BYU defense that has given up 145 points in its last five games. Utah 38, BYU 17.

10. Oregon State (7-3) at Arizona (6-4): If Oregon State can win at Arizona on Saturday and beat Oregon on Nov. 29, the Beavers will go to the Rose Bowl instead of Southern Cal. Arizona has played everybody tough at home, losing to Southern Cal (17-10) and Oregon (55-45). Oregon State has won five straight games in Tucson. On Saturday the Beavers will make it six. Oregon State 31, Arizona 20.

I hear the crime rate doubled last nite around Grant Field after the MIAMI game last nite. What a bunch of THUGS.

The Tech fans can’t even get a dang WHITE OUT right. It looked more like a salt and pepper out.

Apparently several of the Tech fans came to the game dressed as bleachers. Pitiful!!

Hey M will you please tell us what you REALLY think of the SEC and TB?

++++++++ _+++++++ Hold on a sec.

I think I just threw up in my mouth thinking about a Maryland vs GT ACC championship game.

I bet the Tampa Convention Bureau is just as excited. There will be a fire sale on hotel rooms.

Then the winner of that match for the ages gets the right to play Cincinnati in the Orange Bowl. I bet the people in Miami are just wetting their pants in anticipation of that one too.

++++_+++++++

At least we want have to watch the AU OFFENSE, and I use that term loosely, this postseason unless there is some kind of miracle next week.

Their offense is so bad that during the UGA game we were taking bets in how far the team would move backwards on each play.

Oh well there’s always next year.

Tony,

Nobody blames you for being wrong on last night’s GT game. I don’t think anyone saw that one coming. That was a beat down—and could have been worse if not for a meaningless Miami TD at the end of the game, a sure TD pass dropped by Thomas, and at least 1 Tech drive that stalled inside the 10. Go Jackets!

No prediction on the greatest rivalry in college football?

By SC Rules!!!

November 21, 2008 9:22 AM | Link to this

Tony,

I agree that OU will probably take out TT but if that does happen then you have the real issue of how does that affect the BCS. I raise this because if you recall when the Red River shoot out happened OU was #1 vs #5 Texas and Texas jumped to #1 with the win. TT upset Texas and jumped from #9 to #2 So if that holds then OU wins/jumps to #2 “over” #3 Texas, the Big 12 has the tie breakers and the one that will cause all kinds of rucusss is: BCS ranking. So you would have OU in the Big 12 championship over Texas who beat OU. If that plays out as I have summized then you could end up with an even bigger mess than deciding who is in the BCS if ‘Bama & TT lose before the BCS. I hope that ‘Bama wins out as I am very happy to see them back in prime form, I have fond memories of Coach Bryant and the vaunted Tide Wishbone rolling (no pun) up an opposing defense on the way to victory. Anyways here’s hoping that the right teams are in the right places come Bowl season! No OU in the BCS!!!!!!!

Hey Barnfart:

Where’s your criticism of Florida for playing the Citadel?

You and your cronies in the sports media killed Auburn in 2004 and used the Citadel as the reason Auburn was jobbed out of the NC. While AU had more top 15 opponents on their schedule, they were crucified for having the Citadel on their schedule. So, why the inconsistencies?

Just another reason why D1 needs a playoff.

I know that the powers to be for the Rose Bowl are really hoping that Ore St. isn’t the PAC 10 champion and the Rose Bowl rep as it would pit an 8-3 team agaisnt PSU and would be a rematch of the Sept game in Happy Valley. The only peope hoping OSU wins out are OSU fans as they haven’t been to Pasadena since the 54 season if my numbers are correct, but TV wise it would be a terrible sell for the advertisers and we all know $$$ talks. That being said USC will be Co-Champions (#7)and they would really like to play in the Sugar Bowl against the SEC runner up or in the Orange against the Big 12 runner up. Yes, ideally they would love to be in the NC game but I can’t see that happening now. With the NC game most likely pitting the SEC vs Big 12 that leaves those conf’s to play the #2 vs USC and that is a matchup that everyone wants! Personally I’m hoping for a trip to the BAYOU for some fresh grilled Lizard!!!! RTR & Fight On!!!!!

Lots of Tech smack from a fan of a school that hasn’t beaten Tech since the Reagan administration. We have Auburn back on the sked in 2017 and 2018. Maybe we’ll bring back Chan and Reggie for those games and give CPJ a well-deserved break.

Also—nice walk-off homer to beat Missy State 3-2.

Speaking of bowls, if Auburn loses to Bama, which bowl will Auburn go to?

And, yes, Tony, speaking of Auburns, Auburn With A Lake is a 3 point fave against UVA. Go (Clemson) Tigers!

I am rooting like crazy for OSU to win the PAC 10. Nothing against USC, I would just love to see different bowl matchups. I know OSU has already played Joe Pa I just like the other possibilities. I also like that the Rose would be miserable after passing on a UGA vs. USC matchup last year. USC vs. fla in the Sugar would be fantastic.

Now I am sure OSU loses. We never get the best.

More and more, I wonder how the BCS supportes get away with a claim like “it make the regular season the best in sports.” Do these people actually follow college football or do they just enjoy talking out of their a$$? They’d have more creedibility if they said “we would have a playoff, but we think the BCS has more earning potential.”

Whatever your idea of a playoff is, lets use any example where the 6 BCS Confrence champs get in. Take a look at the games that matter in the national championship race this weekend: GT/MIA, OSU/MICH, WVU/LOU, CLEM/UVA, MSU/PSU, BC/WAKE, DUKE/VT, PITT/CIN, OSU/AZ, FSU/UMD, TT/OU.

Under our current system, look at all the games that matter this weekend: TT/OU.

To me, that kind of kills the regular season matters more argument. One important game vs 11 sounds like a winning trade, and I didn’t list the mid majors like Boise State, Utah, BYU and Ball State.

Here’s the real beauty: The Texas Tech/Oklahoma game has no increased importance with the current system as it would if there was a playoff. They both still need to win in order to get into the Big 12 title game.

Instead we have a game last night with massive importance in the championship of a BCS conference, but the headline on SportsCenter is a preview of TT/OU. Good job BCS.

It’s good to see like minded fans in the SEC. Many Trojan fans are beginning to come around to the idea, we don’t need the Rose Bowl. We would be better served playing the Fiesta or even better the Sugar Bowl. I personally believe Alabama and Florida are more balanced than the Big 12 squads, with Texas Tech being the possible exception.

Oregon State is having a good year after they lost a few early; if they play in Pasadena, good for them. I have to stop short of rooting for them, but I wouldn’t be to upset if the win out. We would still be co-champions.

USC would be much better suited for a matchup against the Big 12 or SEC. That would be a better game to watch and hopefully stop the what ifs, that are being bantered about by all sides( I admit I am guilty of it also).

BTY great game last night GT.

Big Tone,

I feel unispired this week to write my post. I guess becasue I can’t predict correctly another penalty filed, poorly coached, lackluster performance by my young dawgs, who have not come together as they did last year. But the overall record is impressive giving how many injuries we have had this year. They better be ready to play next Sat or we could be in store for another West Virginia Sugar Bowl beat down. Tech is more hungry than we are right now and that scares me a tad.

Anyways. good luck this week.
