Can Georgia Tech contain the Miami quarterbacks?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the last Saturday before Thanksgiving:
1. Can Georgia Tech contain the Miami quarterbacks? Miami has a couple of really good young quarterbacks in Robert Marve and Jacory Harris. Both have been named ACC Rookie of the Week twice during this season. Marve manages the game a little better. Harris more athletic and almost always makes plays when he is in there. Both throw the ball pretty well. But they are even scarier when they take off running. Georgia Tech’s defensive front will be the best Miami has seen this season. They will be able to handle the conventional running game. The question is whether or not Marve and Harris can break down containment and make plays with their feet. Tech will have to get after these guys and get them out of their comfort zones if Georgia Tech is going to have a chance tonight.
2. Did any of us see the Will Muschamp thing coming at Texas? In case you missed it, the former Georgia defensive back under Ray Goff has been named the head coach in waiting behind Mack Brown at Texas. Muschamp, who has also been the defensive coordinator at LSU and Auburn, gets a nice bump in pay to $900,000 and the promise that he’ll someday get the keys one of college football’s signature programs. Look for Brown, 57, to coach at least two more years before he takes over as athletics director at Texas. DeLoss Dodds, one of the very best athletics directors in the business, is thinking about retirement somewhere down the road. Then the chain of events will be put into place. Texas was hoping to wait a while to make this move but it had to be made now because Muschamp was going to get one of these open head coaching jobs.
3. What is the over/under on points for Florida vs. The Citadel? Florida wants to win the game impressively and the Gators certainly will do that. At the same time Urban Meyer doesn’t want to get anyone hurt with Florida State and Alabama coming up the next two weeks. If I’m the head Gator Tim Tebow gets two possessions and then John Brantley gets to captain the ship the rest of the way home. What’s the number? Let’s pick a nice round one. Like 60.
4. Does Ole Miss have a shot at LSU? All I know is that with two minutes left in the third quarter last Saturday LSU trailed Troy 31-3. The Tigers rallied to win 40-31. LSU is a little like Georgia. Now that the SEC championship is off the table it’s hard to keep the guys interested. LSU’s back seven on defense is still vulnerable to a quarterback with a hot hand. Is Jevan Snead good enough to rip that secondary? Houston Nutt already has one signature win (over Florida 31-30) on the road this season. Will he get another?
5. Does Dabo Swinney really have a shot at the Clemson job? If Clemson (5-5) can find a way to win Saturday at Virginia I think ol’ Dabo has a real shot at being the next head coach of the Tigers. Now that Will Muschamp is not in the mix, who does AD Terry Don Phillips turn to? No question Clemson is playing better on offense. If Clemson beats Virginia AND South Carolina (on Nov. 29) then you can book it. Dabo will be your guy.

…it appears Dabo lost his shot when Clemson lost to FSU, especially after they beat BC in Boston while BC beat FSU in Tallahassee! But, stanger things have happened if they beat both UVA and SC!
It is likely that Clemson will go after a current assistant, whether it is Foster from VT, Venable at OK, or Dabo - as mentioned last week, whoever they hirfe needs to bring some physical toughness to the program.
With their payout of $3m+ to Bowden they will probably practice fiscal responsibility and go with a lesser known product in order to say that they want to give a “young stud” a chance, while paying in the $1m+ range. They can afford to hire whomever they want, even if they really wanted to pay out $3m+ for Bill Cowher, but that is unlikely at this time. But, first things first for Dabo and Tigers!

Can Ole Miss beat LSU ? Yes, with our lack of a decent defensive secondary the entire year, Snead may have his best day yet. LSU can’t win this year—if we win out, we go to the ancient Cotton Bowl, a depressing relic from yesteryear, to play either Texas Tech, Texas or Oklahoma ! Jeez, I can’t wait ! I think the Bama game took it out of the team. With our lack of a QB, sunny days ain’t here again. Can next year come soon enough ?

Tony..The over under is irrelevent and Meyer has proven he doesnt care about risking injury. I watched the Kentucky game and I think UF was up like 52-7 and Tebow was still in the game. I think they score again and he was finally taken out. Same will be the case this weekend. The backup will finally get in with about 5 mins left!

No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.
Am I missing something? Doesn’t that throw out the whole Doomsday Scenario (re:the 3 Big 12 teams)?

To all the loyal GT fans
Whether you think the Whiteout is a good or bad idea, WEAR WHITE.
Dont thin its just a non-blackout thing. Many other NCAA teams used the same idea EVRY YEAR for big games, or their last home game of the season, Tx A&M, Penn State, etc.
GT will be on national TV with the opportunity to win and possibly get to a very good bowl, even teh ACC-CG.
Its not whether you own something white or not, its abiut showing that you give a damn about the Institute and Your Team.
If you dont have anything white to wear for cold weather, just paint you chest or wear a white trash bag over that winter coat.

Ole Miss takes care of LSU. UM QB Snead may be the most underated player in the league. They are the second best team in the East. Who played ALA to the wire in Tuscaloosa, beat Florida, Auburn. The games they lost came down to the very end. Nutt has some very good players, only lacks depth. If LSU can run the ball like against Georgia they have a chance. If Ole Miss stops run and forces pass. It is over. Lookout Snead has 2 more years and Nutt looks well in recruiting. Ole Miss could play western spoiler for a few years to come.

It’s time for you to buck up and admit. The SEC is the most over rated conference in the history of football, and you were part of the hype.

The Citadel deserves to be shown the respect to be given the opportunity to play at least the first half against the Gator starters. After that, if the Gators have a comfortable lead, then Meyer should clear the bench for the second half. The back ups need work and have certainly earned the play time.

**Hey Tony, take a break from mediocre football and come on over to Norman this weekend for the Game of the Year.
Tebow aside, this is the worst collection of SEC QB’s that I have seen in 25 years of closely following college football, which makes the leagues defensive stats a mirage. This is shown by both games in and out of conference. LSU giving up 50+ twice, etc.
Remember the infamous auburn 3 miss.st 2 score early in the season and SEC fan was claiming that was just great defense… then weeks later, reality set in when the auburn defense got blasted by west virgninia and the miss.st defense got blasted by georgia tech
Tennessee - Phil Fulmer fired over debacle at QB spot that has turned into a merry go round rotation, with DB Berry even in the mix. Rotation has combined for 7 TD’s and 7 Int’s. Scored 13 pts. on Northern Illinois and 7pts. in a loss at home to Wyoming.
Auburn - unable to make the transition to the spread led to firing of offensive coordinator. Rotation of Burns and Todd combined for 7 TD’s and 13 Int’s. Scored 27 pts. on Southern Miss.
South Carolina - Spurrier still scratching his head, rotating 2-3 QB’s. Scored 23 pts. on Wofford and 26 pts. on UAB.
LSU - SEC championship MVP Ryan Perriloux booted from the team left LSU rotating QB’s that has combined for 16 TD’s 16 Int’s. Inserted a freshman last night when down 30-3 at home in the 3rd Q. to Troy.
KY - Starter Hartline threw for 8 TD’s and 7 Int’s until being benched 2 weeks ago when he was replaced by freshman Cobb who has thrown 2 TD’s and 5 Int’s. Scored 20 pts. on Middle Tennesse State
Miss.St. - Rotation of Lee and Carroll has combined for 8 TD’s and 10 Int’s. Scored 14 pts. in loss to LA Tech and 7 pts. in loss to GA Tech. Arkansas - Dick 11 TD’s 14 Int’s. Scored a mere 28pts. on Louisiana-Monroe and Western Illinois.
Vanderbilt- Rotation of Adams and Nickson has combined for 13 TD’s and 8 Int’s. Scored 7 pts. in loss to Duke
Ole Miss - Sneed 17 TD’s 11 Int’s with 3 of those TD’s v. Louisiana-Monroe. Threw 0TD’s and 2 Int’s v. Samford.
Bama - Wilson 8 TD’s 5 Int’s. Scored a mere 20 pts. on Tulane who had a 2-1 yardage advantage
And No, I did not forget Stafford. He is not as horrible so I did not include him on the list. He is average at best, (17 TD’s 8 Int’s) and by default the #2 QB in the SEC, despite being at the center of the collapse of the nations preseason #1 team**

Dear Mr. Barnhart:
I always respect your coverage of college football and especially the SEC. I love to read your column and I enjoy your insight on CBS and CSS. I like in SC and I am an Auburn fan. I felt it was a little irresponsible of you to come out on the Brando show and say that your sources told you that Turbeville to Clemson is a done deal. I may not have it completely accurate, but it was along those lines. Now you are saying that Dabo has a good chance to say if he wins. Do columnists ever need to come out and say they were incorrect and apologize? Is there any accountability or can one just write any rumor they hear and report it as fact. Brando said at halftime of the SC-UF game that this may be Tuberville’s last game at Jordan-Hare. Is it fair to report these things when they may not be true?

You never dissapoint. 1/2 of what you post comes out of left field, the other 1/2 is just stupid. You don’t engage in debating it is more like childish name calling.
There are really very few impressive QB’s outside the Big12. The SEC and ACC are average at best at QB (though there are some that are just plain winners). It is all cyclical. I remember hearing SEC and ACC fans for years complaining about how weak the BIG12/SWC was and that their team would go through Nebraskas schedule undefeated.
BTW RO, people do not stand up in front of me at games as my tickets are on the front row.
By Don't get the Muschamp hype
November 20, 2008 11:58 AM | Link to this
Muschamp is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, he is very good. But I don’t know if he’s any better than all the other very good defensive coordinators out there. Yet he’s been on the fast track to the big time like he’s the second coming of Knute Rockne or something. I’m sorry. I just don’t get it. He must be very charismatic in interviews or something. At any rate, good for him.
By Preseason #1
November 20, 2008 12:28 PM | Link to this
I agree with the above guy who said don’t buy into the Muschamp hype. He just happens to be the flavor-of-the-month, no better no worse than the next hyped assistant. I can’t believe a program like Texas with a not-so-old head coach, who’s never really mentioned retiring, would commit years in advance to anyone. Also, I can’t believe Muschamp would commit (binding and legally, anyway) to a position that may not open for years. It’s an unexplored precedent started by FSU and one or two others with the head coach “in waiting” thing.
And for crying out loud, can we stop the white out/black out nonsense. I credit (some) Tech fans who are even suggesting that it’s about as relevant as “the wave” and are not going to participate.

In my opinion, a bigger burning question regarding the GT vs UM game is, ‘Can the GT running game consistently break thorough against the stingy Miami defense?’. Even if GT can’t get the QBs out of their comfort zone, the ‘Canes have not demonstrated in their current win streak that their offense has the capability to put up big numbers. Only one game in the last five has Miami scored more than 20 points in regulation.
By Jets GM
November 20, 2008 12:59 PM | Link to this
To all the morons out there, which is about 95% of the people who post here, it’s easy for the Big 12 to have so many many “good” qb’s when everyone in the conference plays such porous defense. Everyone in the Big 12 ranks 50th or below in defense which would be behind everyone in the SEC except Vandy. Put Tebow, Stafford, John Parker Wilson, and Jevan Snead in the Big 12 and their numbers would dwarf all the other little 12 qb’s who will all be playing in arena league after they are done. If you want to arena quality football, watch the big 12. If you want to see the NFL style football, watch the SEC. That’s where the big boys play. And the disparity between the SEC and everyone else and the SEC will be even greater next year when all those young qb’s are a year older.
And to to the dummy who said the SEC is the most over rated conference in the history, what an idiot. Look at the players in the NFL and see who has the most. Look at the national rankings in recruiting. You will see the SEC leading by a landslide. The only thing the Big 12 has in their favor this year is the biased rankings, and even there it’s close and they are the only conference that can even brag about that. So to say the SEC is the most over rated is way off, champ.
And to the the people who say that Tony just talks about things that no one cares about, then why are you reading the article and posting, dumb azzes?
By Jets GM
November 20, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this
Actually, fake Eric Zeier, the UGA fans on these boards are far more intelligent than the dumb azz haters. At least the UGA fans are more realistic. The haters just pull things out of their azz and would rather bash on UGA than pull for their own team. Really DUMB those people are, and quite sad.

I think that Tech fans and students wearing white trash bags is altogether appropriate, and in fact should be required for all Tech games.
Since there should only be about 23,000 folks out there for the game tonight, the trash bags will make them stand out better. Would someone please place them in the dumpster (the fans and students - not the trash bags) after the game. We can recycle the trash bags.
On another note: Regarding the Georgia Bulldogs, with all the injuries and the highest rated strength of schedule in 1A college football, I think the Dogs have done great. We lost to the #1 team in the nation and we lost to the team that will win the national championship.
We are 9-2 and will beat GT. We will also win our bowl game, going 11-2 with all that adversity. Great job and thank you to all of the Georgia Bulldog coaches and players.

Mark Richt & Paul Johnson die and go to heaven.
They walk in those pearly gates and there sits God on a golf cart. Richt & Johnson climb on the cart and he starts taking them on a tour of heaven.
They start approching a silver airstream travel trailer with GT flags flying from the roof. Off in the distance is a huge palace, UGA flags everywhere, Uga statues, Hedges just like at Sanford stadium…
Johnson looks at God and says “God, not to be complaining but why does Richt get that huge palace while I get a little travel trailer?”
God - “That’s not Richt’s palace Paul, that’s my home.”
