Florida is definitely the best team in the country
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five things we learned over the weekend:
1. Florida is definitely the best team in the country: With all due respect to No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas Tech, nobody in America is playing better right now than the Florida Gators. We’re talking about a team that has won six straight SEC games by an average of almost 40 points. No team until now has ever won six straight SEC games by 28 points or more. Everyone knew the Florida offense would be good. And with head coach Urban Meyer in charge of the special teams, we knew they would be good as well. But now the defense is starting to really play well and giving the ball to that great offense on a short field. Can Alabama beat Florida in the SEC championship game on Dec. 6? Sure they can. Alabama, with their great play up front, is exactly the kind of team that can beat the Gators. But if Florida keeps playing at this level, nobody is going to beat them.
2. Randy Shannon has Miami on the right track: There were a lot of questions raised when Randy Shannon, a lifelong Miami player and assistant coach, was made head coach in 2007. Those questions certainly lingered when the Hurricanes went 5-7 and lost their last four games in 2007, including an embarrassing 48-0 loss to Virginia in the last game ever played in the Orange Bowl Stadium. Shannon simply asked for patience. He was improving the talent base through recruiting that that young talent would eventually get better. Now it has. Since close losses to North Carolina (28-24) and Florida State (41-39), the Hurricanes (7-3) will roll into Bobby Dodd Stadium Thursday night on a five-game winning streak and in control of their own destiny in the ACC Coastal. Last Thursday’s tough 16-14 win over Virginia Tech was a game that Miami would not have won a year ago.
3. This is the toughest SEC championship game ticket ever: During the weekend in Gainesville, Fla., I took an informal survey of people I knew would be getting calls for tickets for the SEC championship game. They all said the same thing. This will be the toughest ticket since the event started in 1992. Never has there been a conference championship game where the winner was guaranteed a spot in the BCS title game. If Alabama beats Auburn and Florida wins its last two against The Citadel and Florida State that is exactly what will happen. Except for the Super Bowl and the opening ceremonies to the 1996 Olympics, this could be the toughest ticket in the history of Atlanta sports.
4. Unless Georgia has an attitude adjustment, it will lose to Georgia Tech: Georgia’s football team looked tired, bored, or both against Auburn. Good thing that Matthew Stafford and A.J. Green were there to bail the Bulldogs out again. I know this. Georgia Tech is going to be really excited about playing the game when the Yellow Jackets arrive in Athens on Nov. 29. New coach Paul Johnson wants to send a signal that he intends to make this a rivalry again. Georgia Tech’s players come into this game feeling they have enough weapons to win. If Georgia tries to ho-hum their way through that game, thinking their talent will eventually carry the day, the Bulldogs are going to get beat.
5. “Blackout” games are probably gone for good: The “blackout” idea has surely run its course. Georgia went to the well one too many times with the black jerseys and got kicked at home by Alabama. Florida State trotted out the all-back uniforms Saturday night in Tallahassee and just got dominated by Boston College 27-17. The Seminoles tried it two years ago, also against Boston College, and got beat in that game, too. One other thing: Florida State looked listless in that game to me. I wonder if the suspensions of those receivers on the eve of the contest took some of the fight out of that team. If so, that was a shame because it might cost the Seminoles a shot at the ACC championship.

…UGA is going to get dominated by GT if they continue to play on D the way they have the past 4 games. Granted, they have extra time to view the Tech offense on film and to practice against it, but the players on D are not gifted nor dominant, so a thrashing is a real possibility a la UF and AL. I look for the Dawgs to come out and fall behind like the AL game before they make any sort of adjustments, if they make any. It could be oooogly by halftime!

Listening to all the national media, I just hope they let Alabama into the GA Dome to play the game but at the same time, I wonder why they would even show up. Most everyone has written the Tide off as having no shot at all in this game. That makes me ask though. If Florida is really the best team in the nation, why are they not ranked #1? Who cares if BAMA is undefeated. Shouldn’t the best team be #1? Florida is a great team but lets keep in mind, they lost to Ole Miss at home this year. They can be beaten!! A 3 hour CBS love fest with Tim Tebow!

Georgia is going to beat Tech bad, they will be at least 14 point favorites. Georgia has too many weapons, is ranked #10 in the country, This will be Tech’s worst beating this year.. I take the Dawgs 38-10

Tubberville is overrated as a coach.Look at his long tenure as a coach, what has he really ever won?Had some nice seasons, but no carrott at the end. Also Auburn is only a regional team.Hardly anyone outside the SEC could even find Auburn on a map.

I don’t know why Alabama is going to bother showing up for the game with Florida in the Georgia Dome. According to all the pundits, Bama has no shot at winning this game. Wasn’t it these same “pundits” that said that Alabama would end up winning 7 games this year and would be lucky to have a post season destination in Shreveport or Nashville?
I just hope that everyone continues to discount Bama’s chances.

Tony, you still don’t get it. It’s not that UGA is tired or bored. THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD. Overhyped by the Georgia media during the entire offseason and the hype was bought hook, line and sinker by the national media. The writers from around the south familiar with the Dogs picked the Gators to win the SEC East. The SEC is down this year. In many years this Georgia team would be 6-6. Wake up and admit tis is a mediocre college football team.

Dogs know that the season is over. No passion, horrible execution and ever so predictable play calling by Bobo.
I am amazed at the lack of passion from this team all year. Without Stafford we are 6-5. Defense is abysmal. We once again made a bad QB look good.
“Wait til next year” might be worse.

Let’s be honest folks…who would you rather have coaching your team in the biggest game of the year…Urban Meyer or Nick Saban?
Urban Meyer won the national championship in his 2nd year with the Gators, but it was well recognized that Florida had recruited very well before he got there. No one doubts that Florida is extremely talented this year as well.
Nick Saban’s team has 9 scholarship seniors and he has coached his bunch up to where they believe that they can beat anyone.
In 1992 Alabama had a team similar to this year’s team. No one gave them much of a chance in the Sugar Bowl against another team from Florida.

92, 99, 05 hmmm…..I wonder why Bama played in those games….Florida is a great team, but they are not invincible. Fla may win, BUT they won’t blow out Bama. The way Bama plays on offense, not flashy but very effective. Bama wins this game by playing good defense and playing defense on offense. Running the ball and having long drives is the best defense against Fla. Bama may be too physical on both lines, and they won’t shoot there self in the foot like the lamecocks. Expect a close game in the high 20’s

Florida is playing the best. But if they where the best they would be ranked the best. So for that Alabama is the best.
I really don’t care how they look as long as they win. My real question is IS THERE ANYONE ON THIS TEAM IN THE DB POSITION THAT CAN PUSH RASHAD JONES FOR PLAYING TIME?????
You got that right. As a DAWG fan I can’t wait to see this game!!! When was the last SEC game where both teams where ranked so high??? Can anyone answer that for me?
It’s going to be a great game on the 29th! Both are good football teams with playmakers on offense. If Tech gets behind early then thy could be in trouble having to rely on the pass which thy don’t want to do. If UGA gets down early can they get enough 3 and outs of stops to get the ball back in their Playmkers hands on offense???? It’s going to be a good one!
It’s more for the fans than anything. Not much of an opinion on it.

Its the offense!!! If we can’t score, the pitiful defense goes back on the field. Georgia should have rolled Auburn. Where is our coaching, I’ve noticed Richt never mentions the offense for fear of may be “offending” his golden boy, Stafford. And by the way, after 3 years of “young upfront”, when are we going to be “experienced” upfront. One other rant, is there an unknown rule with this team that we can’t run the ball inside the opposing teams 10 yard line? Our offensive coordinator needs to pass for a touchdown instead of running it, why?

I do not think anyone is showing ‘Bama disrespect. If you look at the stats, I agree that Florida should be favored. They have completely destroyed everyone in their path since their one loss. That cannot be denied.
Saying that-the game is not won on paper. Stats do not decide the winner. Lesser teams with unimpressive results win all the time against flashier, more popular teams. Look at Pitt-W. Virginia last season. There is no way Pitt was the better team, yet they found a way to win.
If ‘Bama wants to be taken seriously, beat the team the nation loves. It should not take that to be taken seriously, yet it often does. Find a way to win that game and then nobody can deny you a chance at the NC game. Lose it, and you prove what most “experts” think.

Now that the season has played out, can we finally get over the big myth of the “powerful SEC? And can we also get over the myth of the “grueling UGA schedule? The SEC has two teams, FL and AL..all the rest are average or downright bad. I believe when the season is over the dogs will have beaten one team (LSU) that could be considered fairly good and may end up about #18. Everyone else that georgia beats will be below average teams and most will have losing records. So dogs played 2 good teams and got blown out by both. So why are we still supposed to believe the SEC is a “powerful” conference, and that dogs are anything more than just an average team that ended up playing a pretty weak schedule?

Tony,
I must have missed your interview with the ole ball coach after the game. I would have liked to have heard his explanation of how the best defense in the conference gave up 56. And how it feels to be on the receiveing end of such a beating. At least Meyer did not call time out to run up 77 like SOS did to KY one year. Here’s hoping that SOS stays around long enough to get beat by 70.
Who has the toughest schedule in the country? who had four straight road games? The Dawgs are tired!!The LSU game was a tough physical game, the fla game was a tough mental game, KY was a tough physical game and Auburn is a rival game. You know and I know how hard it is to beat AU. Unfortunately, all the experts in Ohio and CA don’t look at it that way. The Dawgs have two weeks to get rested and prepare for GT. What is Richt’s record after a week off? I like our chances.
ps. Did you see how “Great” Bama played in the first half against MSU? I wish we could have played a 3-6 team after playing LSU.

I don’t understand what all the hoopla is about Ga. Tech this year. They haven’t beaten anyone worth a flip the entire year. There only good win came against a decent at best FSU team. They lost too a crappy UVA team, a decent Va Tech team, and a decent UNC team. UGA has more speed, more talent, and the best offense Ga. Tech has seen all year. UGA’s defense hasn’t seen a Tech style offense all year, but we have an extra week to prepare, and even Willie Martinez can help this defense with an extra week. Remember UF game last year, this one shouldn’t even be close. Overrated Dawgs over an even more overrated Ga. Tech, 31-14

9-2, average?
The Dawgs lost to two of the best teams in the country. Pre-season hype is not created by the team. What are they supposed to do? Plead with the media to stop covering them. We all knew UGA’s schedule was damn near impossible. I’m proud of most of their season. I am a little disappointed at the lack of intensity during the Florida thrashing and during the weak Auburn performance. I think they need to take some action on special teams. Maybe a shake-up during the off week to get everyone’s attention properly focused. Richt’s laissez faire attitude towards the poor special teams play concerns me as well. I hope that is just for the media and behind the scenes he is lighting some fires under coaches and players asses.
Tech concerns me because of the potential for embarassment and the fact that I hate tech worse than I hate Osama Bin Laden, Adolph Hitler, and Barry Bonds all rolled into one package. They are much better than anticipated but if the Dawgs take advantage of their speed and superior physical play on defense they should be able to handle the modified option attack. They have two weeks to prepare for it. THey need to get on top early to take Teck out of their game.

What is Kyles definition of “dominate” since CMR came to UGA, 08 was the only domination. 01 ga lost by 14, 02 ga lost by 7, 03 ga lost by 3 04 Ga won by 7, 05 ga lost by 4, 06 ga lost by 7, 07 ga won by 12. Yes Ga has beaten GTU 7 yrs running, but I admit we have not dominated them except for the one blow out in athens. UGA has been very fortunate to beat tech in some of those games just like Fla has been very fortunate to beat UGA in sone of their games.

Five things we REALLY learned this week:
(1) First, Florida is a great team. But it’s dominance has only proven that the SEC is weak outside of Florida and Alabama…and Bama is a distant second.
(2) Second, when you’ve sucked as bad as Miami has the past few years, UP is the only direction left to go.
(3) Third, the SEC Championship will be the toughest ticket to get, but the stands will be half empty at halftime when Florida is winning 42-3. If you’re going to be traveling west on I-20, plan accordingly.
(4) Fourth, Georgia will lose to Georgia Tech…attitude adjustment or not.
(5) Fifth, teams should come up with their own motivational fad. Penn State is the only school who can pull off the White Out. Often imitated, never duplicated. (Plus black-outs just look stupid….looks like a bunch of floating heads in the stands).

KOOL-AID ALERT. KOOL-AID ALERT. COME AND GET YOUR SEC KOOL-AID HERE!!
Florida is the best team in the country?? ROTFLOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since Tony doesn’t like to use FACTS, let’s, once again, take a quick glance at the FACTS:
Top 5 in both BCS and AP polls have 3 Big 12 teams and 2 SEC teams. Top 13 in both same polls has 5 Big 12 teams, and 3 SEC teams. The big difference in the two polls is BCS has GA #11, OKSt #12, Mizzou #13. AP has OKSt #11, Mizzou #12, GA #13. Does ANYONE…SOBER that is…believe GA could even stay on the field with either OKSt or Mizzou after watchinig GA vs. KY or even AUB? So, which is the best conference with the best teams??
After this Saturday’s TxTech/OK game, TxTech, TX and OK will have played EACH OTHER to get where they are. Where are the Top 5 ranked teams Bama or UF have played to get their spots? Hmmmmmmm?? Anyone?? Anyone??
Now, what old Mr. College Foot…uh…Mr. SEC…tells you is that the Big 12 is totally over-rated b/c of those “awful” Big 12 defenses that allow such ridiculous offensive stats to pile up. Really??!!
You see, Tony tries to make the argument of why the SEC is so great by the same measure he attempts to say how over-rated the Big 12 is.
You wont hear Tony say that the SEC is only good b/c of all those weak (wretched) SEC defenses like we’ve seen on national display…like GA, SC, KY, LSU, etc. that are giving up 30, 40, 50 points per game.
If the Big 12 champ does meet the SEC champ for the title, and the SEC champ gets trounced, old Mr. SEC will start looking like Mr. Hypocritical Fraud. But I digress.

I hope BAMA plays a solid game against Auburn in a couple of weeks and then they can focus on the GATORS. All of the experts (bandwagoneers) keep promoting the GATORS as invincable. BAMA will respect the GATORS but will not be intimated by them. The GATORS cannot score when they do not have the ball. I think the single largest factor will be can they stop BAMA. Either way we will show up and play hard and let the best team win….no excuses. RTR

Despite all of Georgia’s obvious flaws, they are still the best team Tech has played all year. The ACC simply does not have playmakers like Stafford, Green, Massoquoi, and Moreno. You’d be hard pressed to find 4 guys that talented in the entire league, let alone on the SAME TEAM. These guys have carried UGA all year. If you stop them, you win. If not, get ready for No. 8. Regardless of where UGA’s schedule is currently rated, something the Dawgs have very little control over, their only two losses are to arguably the two best teams in the country. They were the two best teams we played and we lost, got crushed really, but to somehow infer that UGA is not a good team because they lost to the two best teams in the country is ignorant. For Teck fans to equate losses to Alabama and Florida with losses to Va Tech, VA, and UNC shows that you have failed to grasp the transitive theory of football schedules.

A week of “blackout” talk needs to be gone for UGA, but black is one of the team colors. No reason not to wear the alternate jersey on infrequent occasions.

The thing is that Stafford chokes under consistent pressure. True, the first points on the board will be due to UGA’s offense, but it will be a pick six the other direction. Jackets will stay up by 14 through most of the game, but the final score will be 38-17. The Jackets will just want it more.

UGA-Tech… the bottom line is neither team is very good. The difference is UGA has way more talent and Tech has better coaching. I can easily see this game going either way.
More on UGA…I am sick and tired of players dancing and acting like they are in a night club! The team and coaches for that matter could learn alot from the freshman AJ Green…when he scores or makes a great play guess what he does…flips the ball the ref and returns to huddle/sidelines! Emotion is fine and in fact needed desperately but the dancing is out of control. It is sad to see them dance and celebrate beating two of the worst offenses in America! Do you see the Bama players acting this way…I don’t think so unless they want to ride the bench! Again, point to the penalties/special teams/dancing/off the field issues they all have a common thread…lack of discipline/poor coaching leadership! I can deal with losing some games…you cannot win them all every year but for goodness sake play with class, heart, and intensity on and off the field!
To hell with Tech

Florida is very good and would be hard to beat in the dome. Bama’s offense sucked against Miss. State and has not played good lately. Bama needs to stop thinking about the gators and get ready for the Auburn tigers and take them behind the woodshed. The media loves USC and the gators and Bama would be a underdog against whoever they play if they can beat the gators. Wasn’t Clemson picked #9, Auburn #10 and Tennessee #13 (I think). What has happen to their season? Why don’t you give us an updated article on what went wrong with those 2 teams season? I will be so glad when you retire. Remember a win in a win regardless of how they played. Go dawgs!

Preseason I said on this page that there was no way UGA could win the NC. I hoped they could win the SEC East but they are not good enough to win that. I don’t have to say they were overrated now because I said it pre-season. Exactly what is “pathetic” about acknowledging that your alma mater got its a* kicked by two of the best teams in the country. Are you denying that Florida and Alabama are two of the best teams in the country or are you saying that it is “pathetic” that I acknowledge that we got easily handled by both of them.
You’re an idiot. You play the teams in your conference. UGA scheduled a tough out of conference game and easy handled AZ State. If SEC fans are rednecks and have no clue about football why does our confernce dominate college football? Consistently, year after year, the SEC is in the mix for the NC at the end of the season.

You can list arguements of all kinds to say the SEC isn’t the best conference anymore. But, the fact is the last two National Champions are from the SEC. Until someone knocks us off that pedestal, we’re still the best.
And, for those of you who say the key for Alabama to beat Florida is to “run the ball and have long drives”: You may want to ask Mr. Moreno how well that works.

What nothing about how Troy choked against LSU, and how the SEC as a whole is overrated. Hey I went to UGA law so I am an SEC guy, but man the conference is pathetic this year with the exception of Bama and Florida. How many embarrassing losses or near losses does it take beteen Wyoming, WVU, Troy almost beating LSU, Middle Tn Sts of the world vs. Arkie. It is just awful. Worst SEC I have seen this decade by far.

GatorG,
There is a BIG difference between UGA’s offensive line and Bama’s offensive line.

I’m not arguing for or against the SEC. I love the Big 12. Hell, I love the PAC 10. The fact is I’m crazy about college football. I just happen to be a UGA grad and they are my favorite team. I pull for SEC schools and I think that the SEC is consistently strong in football. I think the Big 12 is consistently strong in football. In fact, I think the Big 12 is pretty much equal to the SEC in football, maybe not historicaly but for the past few years. The problem with some of you people is that you want to look at things as they are today, not as they are for a season or for several seasons. Over pretty much any period you want to choose, the past 5 years, 10 years, or 25 years the SEC has been the strongest (or essentially tied) football conference. Anyone who tries to argue other than that has a pretty big hill to climb.

As for UGA/GT it all depends on UGA’s defense. Will they finally, on the last game of the season, decide to put a full game together and play defense that they are capable playing? If the game was this Saturday I would give the edge towards Tech. Hopefully having a full week off will help Little Willie put together some kind of game plan. That’s our saving grace.
It’s sad because even with the good year Tech is having, and they are, this game should not be close if we were playing true Georgia football. Fact is, we are not so this will be a close game. This is our bowl game. This one matters most. NEVER end a streak on your home field. Heads should fly if Georgia loses on their home field to a team they should beat. It’s not a knock towards Tech, just a fact.
As for UF/Bama, Sorry Bama, UF is the best team in the country for now. But, who knows if the big “Mo” changes in 3 weeks. It should be a good game. If UF is playing like they are now, It will be over with quickly.

Being ranked #1 and being the best team is two different things. The polls do not rank teams based on who is the best. Let’s say that UF converts that fourth down and kicks a game winning FG. UF would be ranked #1. Would that mean that UF is (today) a better team than bama? But since they did not do so 2 months ago, bama is the better team today? no, you watch the teams play (almost) a whole season and form your opinion. Based on what has happened on the field for the last 2 months, how can you not think that UF is going to beat bama? Does that mean they will? Who knows? That’s why the play the games.

To St Nick and Scott: Your references to bama in 1992 sounds as if you felt Bama was a decided underdog . Nothing could be further from the truth. Bama was ubdefeated. They played in Birmingham. Florida had been beaten by Tennessee, Miss. State and FSU. Everyone, including the SEC, the networks and the Sugar Bowl, picked the Tide. Florida was lucky to make it close. And Scott, while Saban has done a great job, like Meyer in 2006, Urban has only 8 scholarship seniors, one less than Nick.

All I know is that UGA cannot stop the offenses IT HAS SEEN for the past umpteen years, and now they get Tech’s offense that they have not seen - that is why I think this game may be reminiscent of the WVA v UGA Sugar Bowl game of 2005 in the GA Dome (after Katrina) when UGA was down 31-0 in the first quarter! Hope I am wrong, but the UGA defense is just plain BAD - the only hope is that the Tech offense resorts to the one that fumbles several times per game, the UGA may be OK.

So, nerds just get over it. You know that all of you would KILL to have had the success that UGA has had over the last 10 years. I mean it must really suck to win 100 games, average 10 wins a year and finish ranked in the Top 25 every year for over a decade (they are the only team to do so by the way!).
2 SEC Titles, 3 BCS games, Top 10 6 out of last 7 years, 81+ wins in 8 years, the list goes on and on…
Oh yeah, UGA has beat GIT 7 straight times!

I would have to agree unfortunately with you on some of your points, but some clarification is needed:
1 I think the offense is working strictly off the athleticism of its QB, RB’s, and receivers due to the banged up offensive line. We score a lot more points with a healthy offensive line. The hands to the facemask by offensive linemen are due to inexperience and will be corrected as they mature.
2 The defense has been placed in bad positions by the special teams the last 2 games. They have made some stupid personal files and that needs to be coached out of them, and it will be.
3 Special teams have almost cost us the last 2 games. I don’t know who our special teams coach is or our kicking coach, but they need to get the lead out and teach their special teams players how to play special teams. That kid fumbling the punt into the end zone against KY and thinking he had to run it out and getting tackled at the 2 yard line is poor coaching.
Finally we got blown out against UF and UA. I don’t mind that. One is number 1 and one is number 5. It happens. But we should look better prepared against the rest. I am thankful and grateful we won them, but we would have not had to struggle with strong special teams play.
PS I hope the “blackout games” continue. Win or lose, they bring added excitement and fun to the game for both fans and players. The jerseys obviously won’t win the game for us, but a night game blackout is still something fun.

Big Tone,
I tried to tell you about my dawgs last week. I expected penalties, turnovers and some horrid playcalling. I knew it would be a close game because we are the worst team in the world at putting teams away. We just cannot do it. I thought for sure that when Knowshon tripped over his own feet and didn’t get that first down that we would get beat. We were so lucky to not get flagged for interference on the second to last play.
Anyways, I don’t know what’s wrong with us…… Our defense is terrible, especially our D-Ends. We have to upgrade there in a hurry. I’ll go out on a limb and predict the same type of game against tech. Hopefully we can stop them again on the last play of the game.

Ok, Florida ” has the looks of the best team in the country so far”, that doesn’t mean you are and they haven’t played Bama yet. I give them credit for the the way they’ve done it so far. Don’t forget though, you did lose one at home to a physical team.
Reality check time; Bama’s the most phyical team your going to face. They will have a tough time against Bama, I promise you that. The fact is, I’m not sure who’s going to win this one. I believe in the Crimson Tide and that they could shut down Florida, even dominate them and shock everyone. We always get up for tough opponets. By all means, go ahead and underestimate us and think your team’s invincible now. Not underestimating our oppenet, Florida has been looking like a great team and could win it, but I think it will go down to the wire.
Now the Big-12 guys. Let me start by saying your league is having a great year and yes, that looks sexy. But.. You guys don’t have defense in your league, therefore you have big offensive numbers. Big whup. Whether it’s Bama or Florida, either one will beat whichever team you guys put in the big game. SEC will prove that it’s better when we go head to head, till then, enjoy the rest of the season and trash talk all you can, because in the BCS title game, we are going to wax that a* prove to you, who’s the best.

I have been a die hard Dawg fan back when they spelled dog (DOG). This has been the most boring team i have ever seen. Either a lack of coaching or the team is overrated. I cant believe that i am disappointed i am in a 9-2 team. We have never had a defense as bad as this one. I’m sure coach (ERK) is turning in his grave. This Martinez guy is the worst i ever seen. If CMR does not take action he will also go down. With this team playing the way they are i don’t blame Stafford, Moreno & company to move to the NFL. Why play for a team and risk injury with the lack of discipline and motivation and coaching this one has. As much as i dislike UF i have to say they have the best team in the country and Texas T has the best chance of beating them. Sorry Bama you just don’t have the QB and team speed to play with the Gators. This game want even be close. I have a list of my top coaches in the SEC. I hate to say it but CMR is not at the top and want be until he can take control of this team. This is a case of the tail wagging the DAWG. 1 Sabon 2 Meyer 3 Spurrier 4 Richt

Tony - We’ve heard this all before. UF is good and might be the best in the country. But the same can be said for Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma or even Alabama. We won’t know until January 8.
I remember a lot of people saying how great the 1995 UF team was. It rolled over great teams from Auburn and FSU. They defeated SEC rivals Georgia (52-17), South Carolina (63-7), and Tennessee (62-37). The faced a team from the Big 8/Big 12 and were smashed 62-24.

Because of recent history, the players and coaches will not overlook Auburn. As an alum/fan who no longer lives in Alabama and doesn’t have to hear Aub fans mouths all year, I can completely discount them. I am already looking forward to the SECCG.

Tony, as hard as it is for me to totally accept it, you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT YOUR ASSESSMENT OF THE DAWGS. We bloggers have been speaking up for weeks and weeks about lackadaisical play, confused coaching, excuses from all levels, and how the dawgs have somehow or other managed to win 9 games in spite of all their bad habits. If the water girl doesn’t spike up the dawgs water, they are in deep you know what. Lastly, we are hearing how a win is a win. This is a pitiful excuse for lackluster commitment. Don’t these ppl know that the gamblers take commitment into their formulas when setting spreads? I wouldn’t be surprised if the spread is set at 3 in favor of the Jackets. It would take something like that to get the dawgs attention.

I posted somewhere on one of these blogs before the season that, unfortunately, I thought that UGA would lose two games this season. The two I thought would be troublesome were Arizona State and LSU. I thought that UF and Bama would be good games, but never really in doubt. Well, it turns out that I was mostly right except for speculating on the to whom we would submit in the two losses (I wasn’t really as concerned with that portion of the question by the blogger). Why does it feel so unsatisfying, so maddening verging on even angering at times, to actually be sitting exactly where I fully expected us to be sitting heading into the Tech game? Is it because the losses were such inexplicable blowouts in games where during the first ten minutes or so (particularly in the case of UF) it seemed that we were clearly the better team? Was it because Meyer and Saban are two of the more smugly loathsome creatures in our conference? Why was I so incensed after winning at UK? Do I need therapy or is it this team that could use a psychological enema? Anyone?

UGA can be ranked # 11 in the BCS, but the way they have played the last couple of games, they definitely are not the 11th best team in the country. They just don’t seem to be inspired, or really care, give props to Stafford & Green (Massoquai & Knowshon too) for carrying the team on its back. The D is just playing bad.
UGA may have a little bit more talent than Tech, but not much, Tech’s D is better. Tech’s O is moving the ball, but not scoring, & turning it over way too much, if Tech doesn’t turn it over, & UGA continues to sleepwalk through games & make mistakes then Tech may win the game.

You are not confused, just read too much of the hype. Below are some of the pre-season comments some wrote in:
The dawgs have matured and will play like a mature team does. Watch out for those hairy dawgs as the will be a hunkering down.
Tennessee? Florida? Lsu? USC? Who cares about these pansies.
The Dawgs are easily the best team in the country going into next season and should be ranked #1. I think UGA will go 14-0 next year, with the only tough game at LSU. UT and UF won’t have anything next year to challenge UGA. I predict UGA beats USC easily in the Orange Bowl next year for the national title. No way USC can defend Moreno and Stafford, two superstars. UF—look for a blowout.
UGA will not only win all their games in ‘08 but dominate every game. Things are VERY different now that the team will be fired up for EVERY game and I can’t wait to destroy UT, South Carolina, UF, and everyone else that stands in our way next year, the year of the dawg!
Georgia returns all of their best players, most of them being freshman and sophmores the recent year, and will prove on the field (with the toughest schedule in the country) that they are number 1.
Finished 2007 #2 and start 2008 #1 gonna be a year of “DOGGIE STYLE” - get used to it haters!
Mark it down: UGA blows out florida and tennessee next year and easily wins the SEC, then blows out USC for all the marbles baby!! GA will be unbeatable next year—-way too much talent for everyone else in the country to deal with.
The only team in the country that can possibly match up with UGA next year is USC, and they don’t have the defense to stop Moreno and Stafford. When they play in the title game, I think UGA wins that game by 10-12 points, easy. UGA is going to be the team to beat in the U.S. in the next few years, with all the talent they have and are bringing in.
Dwag fan all of my life, but did not believe the above possible under the current coachimg staff. Good dance moves though.

Oh, and one more thing. Why, Tony (saw you on Talkin’ Football), is USC even being talked about in conjunction with the BCS NCG? If Oregon State beats Oregon and Arizona, Oregon State wins the PAC-10 over USC by virtue of a tiebreaker since the PAC-10 has no championship game; and wasn’t it determined in the media just last season that UGA was not allowed to play in the NCG because they had not won their conference even though they were clearly positioned to be ranked number two at the end of the year before some AP and coaches voting shenanigans moved them down to a consolation (lose/lose) game against Hawaii? Hawaii?! Even though Nebraska had been afforded such a treat several years earlier and well they shouldn’t have been allowed and blah, blah, blah, the fact remains that they played in the game. So, if Oregon State wins the conference, USC should only get to play whatever undefeated joke conference team in whatever (not the Rose Bowl) BCS game is given to them. Go Beavers.

Let me get this straight.. the Gators will beat the Dawgs by 39? Let me get this straight…A Sarah Jessica Parker quarterbacked team will be up by 31 points at Georgia on a Blackout Game? Mexdawg, you are showing way too much confidence in a team that doesn’t deserve it. I wouldn’t make any great proclimations with this uncoached and undisciplined bunch. Defending the option takes discipline. It will be interesting to watch if Tech doesn’t put the ball on the ground.

Thoughts from a Tech fan: We will have our hands full with Miami Thursday night. Talking about beating Georgia in Athens, before we even know if we can survive the ‘Canes at home, is WAY premature. But for the first time in years, Tech is going to be the better-coached team against Georgia. Tech fans - show up, wear white, and be loud Thursday night!

Sorry Tech. UGA has a ton of a lot more talent than tech. Not even close. The thing that you have going for you is that you guys have been playing lights out and playing above your potential. Hats off! Only 3 losses which is very good for a first year.
If UGA shows up with half of their talent they will still beat you. It won’t be a blow like Dawg fans would like to see because we have a nice defense. They like to give other teams opportunities to hang around and have a chance to win it. Again, having the week off before the game gives us the edge.
Bring back Muschamp!!! Free Willie!

Tony is generally right in his comments today. UGA just isn’t very good. They have been living on borrowed time and luck. Its a good thing the rest of the sec most notably Auburn and Tenn. are down this year. Otherwise UGA would just be a 6-6 team. Not very good. The fact is that they will have a real hard time with Tech. Any unbiased observor has to favor Tech. And God forbid if the dawgs have to play a big 12 south team in the cap. 1 bowl. Somebody like OU, TT, OR TEXAS would simply blow out the dawgs.

C”mon Dawgs. That win was kinda pitiful.Where the ** is the defense? Lots of hand tackling, thats ok in flag football but not DiV 1. Penalties happened so much heck I would have just given them 7 points so the defense could get off the field.Ga. Tech will beat us if we play them like that. Oh lord, not a whole year of techies telling me how good they are and bad we are. Is this what it comes to?

The gayturds are NOT the best team, they needed lucky breaks to beat the DAWGS. 9-2 against the toughest schedule in the country is pretty good, the gayturds don’t want to play the DAWGS again. If there were only an 8 team playoff it would be proven!

I guess we should just go ahead and crown the gators the 08 champions. Why play the games, ESPN and Barnhart have already declared them the best so it must be so.
While I think UF is a great team they are certainly not invincible. A physical Ole Miss team proved that in the swamp of all places and an even more physical Bama team will have something to say about that.
I watched Florida’s last 3 routs and while I was impressed with the gators I was equally surprised at how the 3 opponents simply self destructed and after spotting the gators big leads they basically just gave up. The lamecocks turned the ball over 3 straight times deep in their own teritory and basically just quit. Same thing with Kentucky, they had their first 2 punts blocked for easy tds and quickly just gave up. Missing 6 key starters didn’t help their cause either. UGA was in the game going into the 2nd half despite its many miscues in the first half and even outgained UF for the game. But they quickly killed themselves and next thing you know they got demoralized and gave up.
While UF is good I think they are going to be in for a little bit of a shock when they meet the physicality of Bama on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They will not be able to stop the Bama ground game. End of story. On the opposite side I expect UF to get a few big gainers with all that speed but I just don’t see them getting consistent running yardage against the Bama D. Bama is just too physical upfront for the gators and I think Tebow is gonna meet his match when he tries to run inside against a much bigger Rolando McClain and Dontae Hightower. Not to mention a healthy Terrence Cody. If Ole Miss shut down the UF running game you can expect an even more talented Bama team to do the same.
Lastly, recent history suggests to always take a physical Bama team over a finesse Florida team. We were underdogs in our last 4 against the Gators and won 3 of them with 2 of those 3 being blowouts. I think Florida can still win the game but it would have to be a close win and they would have to get some breaks in the way of turnovers, special teams play, etc. If you think UF can blow out Bama you need to put down that crack pipe.

Comin’ -
You are not confused, just read too much of the hype.

Right now, Florida may be a better team than Alabama. We’ll find out in three weeks. However, my argument for Florida being the better (perhaps best) team in the SEC (or country)?
Well, several people have cited our loss to Ole Miss. Luckily for us, that happened early in the season. Good teams get better— and no one can say that Florida hasn’t gotten better.
Are we a great team? Right now, the answer is yes, we are a great team. We have a balanced, well-rounded team- great offense, great defense, and great special teams.
Will we win out? That is the question that will only be answered in the next three games.

Remember all the pundits said that if Georgia could “run the table” that they would be in the NC game? Nobody really expected Bama to do what they did, to us or the season in general. We thought our problem would be with Tenn. and Fla. Some even said with 1 loss we could still be in the hunt. BS! Look at how many 1 loss teams there are in the top 10.
Dawgs will lose to tech unless they decide to play like they’re capable of. What does coaching have to do with this? Everything. Georgia has won on Talent ALONE this season. If they had ANY intensity in their coaching they could be where BAMA is right now.
I say get Steve Spurrier in here as HC and bring in Will Muschamp as DC and AHC. While we’re at it get rid of AD Demon Evans and School President Michael Adams. Hire Vince Dooley as School President and AD!
I am in fear that our beloved Dawgs are going to lose to Tech. If that happens then Richt needs to look for work.

It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!! Regardless of the preseason hype and all of the little twits on here bashing the Dawgs, I wouldn’t trade my Dawgs for any other program in the country. PERIOD!
As for the gators, “don’t believe the hype” makes some very valid points with regard to how the gators have been blowing people out. This is both a knock on the gators as well as a pat on their back. They have lived off of the mistakes of their opponents. When their opponents make a mistake, the gators make them pay for it. UGA was in the game into the 2nd half despite playing like crap until a couple of bad plays made it obvious to me and everybody else that we were just not supposed to win that game, and the gators rolled us. Congrats to them for that! That’s what good teams do. However, Alabama doesn’t make many mistakes. It will be interesting to see what happens when a team stands toe to toe with the gators and does not implode by making mistakes. Go ahead and write off the Tide, if you want to. Saban will have them ready to play and this will be the best defense the gators have played all year. SC had a chance to shine but 3 turnovers and 21 points later, they were just no longer in the game. The gators’ opportunistic team has done that a lot this year.
It just feels like it’s Bama’s year, this year, to me. I hope I’m right, but I do wish all the Bama folks on here beating their chests would have been hanging around the last few years while ya’ll sucked. It’s just funny how a good year erases several years of embarrassment, isn’t it? By the way, has any heard from a UT fan on these blogs in the past few weeks….anyone, anyone…Bueller….?

Gatorbarb,
Good post. I agree and think Fla. is playing better than anyone in the country right now. I think what incenses Bama fans is not that people think Fla. is the best team in the country right now. I think what bothers most of my brethren is that nobody seems to be giving us any chance whatsoever of winning the sec title game. But it doesn’t really matter just like our respective rankings don’t really matter a whole lot right now. The bottom line is that we got 3 weeks to wait and find out and we can both be comforted in knowing that the winner will get a national title shot as it should. Good luck, should be a helluva game.

One thing Mr. College Football doesn’t bring up in his assessment of the DAWGS, where and how do they learn to dance like they do? They’re obviously not tired or bored as some would have us believe. They can be seen dancing and “bustin’ a move” (I believe that is the vernacular) after a good ground gain, completed pass or first down! Too bad we can’t get points for dancing, we would be national champs winning only half our games.
Compared to Alabama, Florida and even South Carolina….Georgia is the best dancing team in the conference. Why is that? Could it be the coaching? Does Saban not believe in dancing? Is Urban Meyer not confident in his dance moves that he just won’t teach the team? Or is it that coaches like Spurrier, et.al.think that dancing should be confined to places other than the gridiron? Do these types of coaches beloeve that their teams are there to play football, dominate the opposition and win GAMES!
I don’t know what to make of all this sideline dancing. The next thing you know the coaches wives will be on the sidelines giving water to the players.
DAWGNATION, is any of this beginning to sink in????

“Gator fans simply do not understand the dynamic of the bammer program, especially those who are under 25 or have lived only in the state of Florida their whole lives. Being that they have never been a yearly SEC opponent for us, we see them seldom and therefore only us Gators who have lived in other SEC states or in AL itself can really feel what that program is, and what its historical niche has been. The closest thing I know to describe it is to say that it is basically the Southern Notre Dame… a “national” program with a rabid, arrogant, self-entitled fan base. They are known for a specific style of football… basic, brutal, smashmouth physicality on both lines, “just enough” offense, and an old-fashioned never-say-die attitude. They are sort of like the canes of recent years in that they don’t THINK they are going to win, they KNOW they are. When they are undefeated, they are the most dangerous and potent force in CFB. Until tagged with that first seasonal loss which makes them doubt that they will be eventual NC, they ride a wave that seemingly will never fade out. They ALWAYS have stellar seasons when they have a senior QB at the reins. The package they have, locked in a GA Dome with 90% of the fans on their side, with that unreal wall of noise and emotion ready to come crashing down on the opponent…This will be the toughest game the Urban Meyer-led Gators have ever played. This will be Tim Tebow’s biggest challenge. Nothing that Ohio State or ref$u or scum or uga or tenn has ever brought to the table scares me nearly as much as this meeting. This is Nebraska in the desert waiting to happen. No matter what the bammers may say on the surface, how much they may poor-mouth themselves… take it from past experiences I have had with them, I KNOW that fan base, and they are AS OF NOW believing deep down inside that they are going to brutalize us, hold us to 10 points or less, possibly injure Tim or Harvin, and win this game in the neighborhood of 24-10 or even more. They are expecting to crush us like in ttown in ‘05, like in ATL in ‘99. Remember how much more “talented” the canes were in ‘92 in the Sugar Bowl? We are right there. This is a perfect storm waiting to descend upon us. Throw out all the numbers and stats, they live above all that in a one-game situation where they feel they can “find a way” no matter what.I posted like this in ‘06 before our game with them in the Swamp, when all you guys were predicting a 30-point win. Remember how that game played out? They led 7-0 the whole first half, we like to have never scored against them, clung for dear life to a 14-13 lead with them driving with 5 minutes to go in the 4th, needed a Reggie Nelson pick6 to finally make that nasty animal DIE at last. When they were “no good”, when jpw was a first-year starter, when they had mikey coaching them. In the Swamp. The Gators will need the game of a lifetime to pull this off. Take this one lightly and it’s all over. I believe that they will be ready

All Right—I’ll Say It One last Time!! I’m a 1969 Florida grad and I have NO IDEA how good they are. The SEC transcends PUTRID this year. There are only 3 teams that anyone with an iota of sense would pay money to watch in a bowl game—You know those 3. The only people paying to see LSU, Vandy, Kentucky, South Carolina and Ole Miss(Who by the way has defeated Florida 3 of the last 4 meetings!!) in a bowl game WENT TO SCHOOL THERE> No Other Reason. The SEC’s signature win outside the conference this year is Florida’s win over Miami—with FSU to come. When a conference’s signature wins are over FSU and Miami and by the SAME team—Well, That is bad. It gets worse next year as Florida plays Charleston Southern, Troy and Florida International out of conference—A Murderer’s Row!!! When a conference is this PATHETIC, and so gun shy of playing anyone—and don’t get me started on the ACC——how can anyone tell how good Florida or Alabama is?? Anyone REALLY thinks he knows should be planning a trip to Vegas and not hanging around an AJC Website.
By the way, you want a Playoff System—STOP attentending these ridiculous garbage bowl games with 6 or 7 win teams. If you STOP, the college presidents will realize they can no longer pawn off junk on the American public. OR let those silly games be played and then take BCS Top 10, give Top 6 a bye week and let 7 play 10 and 8 play 9—two teams emerge. You have 8 teams left which would require 7(9 when you factor in the 7-10 teams) bowl games—MORE THAN ENOUGH!!! AND you can still have the GARBAGE get their “rewards” for winning 7 games in places like Charlotte, Shreveport, El Paso, Detroit and San Francisco—-Well, that’s a good bowl trip.

The only game that UGA people are sure of this year is the one on the 29th:
Dawgs 51-7.
I know that Willie will have the answer for the High School Offense of Tech’s. CWM is having a breathing a sigh of relief that he does not have to go up against another high powered SEC offense. We will stop the run. Nerds can’t pass. PERIOD! One dementional.
Now let’s look at the obvious. This could be Moreno’s and Stafford’s last game as a Dawg. Do you really think they are going to go out with a loss to the Nerd Herd. Think not. Moreno runs for at least 150 and Stafford throws 300+
For once the Dawgs will play up to their capabilities at the expense of the Nerds. Part of it will be because the Nerds will have the audacity to come “Tween the Hedges” cocky, thinking that they will win. Will Not happen. Bank on it!!

Modawg,
Like your post but I can assure you most of us won’t be beating our chests just because we have our first good season since 2005. While we’re ecstatic over the season we’re having this year I think next year some of our koolaide drinkers will have some of the same vibes that some UGA koolaid drinkers had early this season. People are telling us this isn’t the year for us since we only have 9 seniors out of 85 schollies. That its actually next year. But next year we break in a new qb, we lose 3 o-line starters and to me those are the ingredients every team needs to make a title run, an upper classmen qb and an upperclassmen o-line. UGA had the upperclasmen qb but not the upperclassmen o-line. Surprisingly I thought this would be a really good year for Bama, next year would be good but not great kinda like UGA this year. Next year was the year I thought UGA would make their run since they would have more upperclassmen on the o-line and assuming Stafford and Moreno return. I think if they stay next year may be your year and next year will be our year to kind of put the koolaide down and chill. 2 years from now I think we can make another good run. As for the Vol fans being mia along with Roswell Ed and the Auburn fans they will be back. Those programs are too good to stay down for long.

According to CMR, Soft Willie is doing a good job and there are no problems on defense.
The Auburn game against exposed the same problems seen in the UK game and pretty much all season……. there is no pass rush, the defense gets pushed around at the line of scrimmage, and the secondary just plain sucks.
This defense either has no talent or no coaching or both. Which is it CMR? It’s got to be something. Or is everything still ok? The last 2 games we’ve saved ourselves on the last play of the game.
GT is a better offense than either UK or Auburn. Soft Willie and this defense better get its act together.

There is NO doubt that you have the BEST offense and defense that we would have seen ALL year. If we screw around and lay the ball on the ground, it will get UGLY! Dear Interesting Gator Post, I have NO idea how good Florida and Alabama are. How could ANYONE have any idea on how good they are?/ Let me ask you something—and please answer honestly. If Texas Tech, Texas and oklahoma had played Florid and/or Alabama’s schedules this year what would their records have been?? I’m saying 10-0 for all 3 of them against those schedules. Now do they destoy teams like Florida?/ maybe not, BUT do they lose to mississippi—Absolutely Not. If I was a betting man, I’m looking for the most prolicic offensive team to win National Championship Game—assuming they have a SEMBLANCE of a defense. It’s become an offensive game, the best players are now put on offense—not like the NFL where best players play defense—-the best coaching is done by offensive gurus or their close subordinates.
History and all is nice, but college football has evolved into the baseball model along the lines of “Momentum is tomorrow’s starting pitcher”. In college football Momentum(And Dominance) consist of Speed and its optimum utilization.

Plus all the badgering from the fans on the blogs had to wear the players out mentally. If they read the blogs they were wondering who their coach might be, what a football was, how do you tackle, what is a red zone, etc. Instead they went out and played every single second of the game. Gave everything they had till the end. Made the plays they had to. And BTW they won.

The UGA goal is to beat Tech, and then with God’s help, win a lesser Bowl, perhaps the Music City Bowl, or if the Lord really shines his grace upon them the Capitol One Bowl, against the Mighty Ohio State Buckeyes; ah, god is in his heaven and the world is as it should be.

Lou Vales:
I respectfully disagree.
While offenses are putting up stunning numbers this year (due largely, I suspect, to the spread configuration), I still think the old rule applies:
“Offense sells tickets and defense wins footballl games.”
Consider that the Big 12’s best defense is ranked FIFTIETH (OK) and you begin to understand why those offense are performing so well.
Both UA and UF are posting comparable numbers in a conference that has seven defenses ranked higher than OK.
AND holding our opponents to two touchdowns or less.
I don’t know who’ll win on Dec. 6th, but I, for one, can’t wait to get on a field against a Big 12 opponent!

Regardless of who wins the SEC CG, I think the winner will be very tough for a Big 12 team to beat, proving once again that the SEC is the premier conference in the country. Some Dawg-hater says UGA is average at best. 9-2 is average? Do you think Ga Tech, Auburn, or Tennessee would take UGA’s record over the last eight years? Mizzu has not defense. Texas Tech? Really. They would have lost 3 games easily with an SEC schedule. They beat texas on a pass where two defenders whiffed. That’s not great people. Ok. will beat them this weekend then what? Beat they’ll only drop like 3 spots.

UGA had a tough schedule this year? Really? Lets see… Tennessee, nope. Ah, LSU? Try again. Oh, wait, Auburn. Man those were some powerhouses this year. And just because you make it a point to make close games out of UK, SC, and Vandy regularly doesn’t make them any more legitimate. Get off the SEC excuse. If you want to ever make a statement you need to sign home/away deals with OSU or USC or other perennial out-of-conference contenders. The media is always gonna push to make them legitimate so beating them could give you a chance. Until then, either take care of business like Bama did (no one hears them bantering about an unfair schedule) or accept your mediocrity. Enjoy the outback bowl.

Humm, so who is talking rhetoric? UT, the best defensive match up? It seems you don’t want to have a conversation, just rant. He!! TT has a better defense than Texas.
You must realize the first step to beating your Gators is stopping the offense, and with the team speed the Gators have that will be hard.
If Alabama can hold your offense they have a chance of winning, if they can’t you will win.
The only way a Big 12 team can hold your offense is if you have an off day. Your chances of winning against the Big 12 are good because they won’t stop your offense and your defense should hold them.
The USC defensive play is better than the Big 12; they have a better chance at holding your offense, USC has good team speed on the D and that would help them, your team speed is scary good.
The USC offense is not consistent, and that may be the deference.
Florida would have a better chance of beating the Big 12 top 3 than they would USC. Of course USC will almost certainly not play in the NC. The only way that could happen is for Mizz to win.

USC?:
As I said, “Truthfully, I’d like to play the USC Trojans.”
That being said, I don’t think they deserve a shot at the BCSCG because they play in a weak conference with no conference championship game (arguably the biggest/hardest game of the season).
But I’m SO tired of the media bias toward USC.

Yes, you contribute many players to the NFL draft.

By Don
November 17, 2008 6:06 PM | Link to this
The Dawgs will beat Georgia Tech. The fans like to think that Georgia-Florida is the big game of the year but the game against GT seems to be the big game for the players. After a week off they will be refreshed and refocused. Georgia’ defense is bad due to the lack of good pass rushing defensive ends more than any other reason out there. That is what they had last year that made them so good and what they don’t have this year that makes them so bad. Thought the play of the defensive ends would improve during the year but it just hasn’t happened. Mike Bobo’s play calling has a lot to be desired. I understand the play calling was somewhat limited earlier in the season due to injuries to the offensive line but there is no reason at this point the tight ends aren’t catching more passes. Seems like I know what the play is going to be every time the offense lines up. Shouldn’t be that predictable to “Joe Blow the fan” watching the game on TV or from the stands. Watched them spread the offense out and go up and down the field with ease then all of a sudden they starting playing with one wideout, bunching everybody up in the middle. Moreno and the receivers run wild when the defense has to spread out.
With that said, it would have been a miracle for Georgia to go 12-0 or 11-1 with all of the injuries to the offensive and defensive lines. They are right where they should be.
Florida is playing the best ball in the country right now. They are a lot like Georgia’s team last year that just kept getting better as the season went on and Georgia is a lot like Florida was last year. Just because Florida is playing like the best team in the country does not mean they deserve to be in the BCS Championship game. They have to earn that and that means winning the rest of their games and beating Alabama in the SEC Championship. Don’t assume that it is a given that Florida will accomplish all of that. We have all seen what has happened the last few years.
Go Dawgs!

Comments in response to Tony——
(1) Yeah, maybe the Gators are playing the best football in the country right now, but they must if they are to have a good chance to get into the BCS title game. The BCS computer rankings are in love with Texas Tech, Texas AND Utah (good grief). I am convnced that it would take a series of unexpected events beyond imagining for two Big XII teams to play in the title game. If Florida loses again, either to Bama or FSU, they’re done. If Bama loses, either to Auburn or Florida, the Tide is probably done. Texas Tech still must play Oklahoma in Norman, so one of those two teams will drop from BCS title contention. And there is still a possibility that USC could win the Pac-10 (Oregon State loses one), and sneak in the big game if the other other BCS top 5 all drop another game … which could happen.
That is a long way of writing that anything could still happen, for or against the Gators, and any of the other top 6 BCS teams. Thank heaven that being picked by Tony Barnhart is not exactly the same curse as being named preseason Number One on the cover of Sports Illustrated. There’s still a lot of football ball to be played, and anyone who is “certain” who will be in the January 8th BCS title game is delusional. Humility is entirely appropriate under these circumstance … both before and after the games are played.
(2) As you may have gathered from my blog handle, I’m a Gator alumnus and sports fan, and I have no love for or loyalty to the Miami football program. When the Hurricane teams were winning national championships in the 1980s and 90s, their on-the-field and off-the-field team behavior often bordered on the disgraceful. Nevertheless, I cannot help but like Randy Shannon. He is a homegrown Miami boy who made good, and was promoted to head coach at his alma mater when no one else wanted the UM job (hard to believe, I know, given the program’s record over the last 25 seasons). By all accounts, he is a good man, he has the best interests of his players, program and university at heart, and he is a class act. He wants to rebuild the Hurricane program the right way. Good for him. I wish him nothing but success when he is not playing the Gators.
(3) Tony’s predictions have sometimes been a little, well … premature. I know the urge to make outlandish predictions on a blog to drive traffic and get blogger reactions is nearly irresistible, but can we just let Alabama and Florida play their remaining games before we anoint them co-masters of the college football universe? I believe that it has the potential to be best SEC championship game to date, but let’s save the post-game commentary on scalper’s ticket prices, record attendance, etc., until the game has actually been played. Please.
(4) Yup. The Georgia Dawgs need to step it up a gear or two, or a greatly more motivated Georgia Tech team is going to make their lives miserable. On paper, the Dawgs outclass the Yellowjackets’ talent, but the Dawgs look like they have been sleep-walking through their last several games. The potential for an upset exists. Beware.
(5) R.I.P. To paraphrase smarter, better educated football commentators than myself——gimmicks don’t win championships; great defense does. The white-out, black-out, green jerseys, etc., seem to have run their course as a team motivational device. If UGA players and fans like the black jerseys, well, then Coach Richt can work them into the rotation of red, white and black. But holding them back for special games only seems to motivate the opposition.

As for your Dawgs beating my Trojans in said NC game, first y’all would need to get there (preferably) before Coach Carroll retires and secondly how do you figure that Stafford would pick them apart when he’s runnin for the No Fun League after this season. Better for him to get paid to get pounded than to do it for free whic his what will happen to him in any game vs the Trojans.
Secondly, I am happy that USC will end up with their 7th consecutive Conf. championship, albeit a “CO”championship but a trophy all the same as we beat Stanford who beat OrSt. in the season opener. That way we’re free to travel to the swamps to feast on fresh gator! I predict Emanuelle Moody doesn’t even dress for the game to make sure he doesn’t have to play. In all due respect Bama has a solid football team, talent and coaching, but their schedule made it easier for them. Clemson, Tenn, LSU, UGA, and Auburn was not the SEC teams of the past as predicted. Ky, Tulane was close, and their offense has no BIG GUN threat, plus less injuries has been an advantage. Bama is good, but Florida, Tex Tech, Texas and Oklahoma are better. They got into # 1 position by upsets. The SEC game will top off the last several, but Gators play for BCS title and Bama settles for Sugar Bowl probably against Texas Tech if they win against Auburn. The SEC was second best conference this year to Big 12. …….5 teams to 2.

War Eagle——Greetings, old Tiger warrior. Based on your assessment above, it’s good to see you have not lost your knack for objectivity and Southern football wisdom. IMHO, you are right about the conferences, too … Big XII is probably better top to bottom than the SEC this season, largely because Auburn and Tennessee decided to sit this year out, and LSU had no experience at quarterback. Those aren’t permanent conditions, however.
By Atlanta Gator

Marie——Fan memories can be very selective. The 2008 Gators and the 2007 Dawgs are not a good comparison. Let’s review … .
The 2007 Dawgs lost twice, first early in the season to a mediocre Gamecock team at home (16-12), and then got crushed by the Volunteers (35-14) midseason. The Dawgs did not win their division, nor play for the SEC championship. LSU had two losses, and won the SEC championship game. It required a freak series of coincidences to propel the Tigers to the BCS title game.
Florida still has to win out before they will be in a position to play for the marbles. Alabama and their fans believe they can hang with anyone. I’m content to watch the game. : )

Humm, ranked 6th in the BCS and you can’t get the Trojan’s off your mind. You fear even the chance that you’ll face USC in a NC Showdown.
It’s OK. Fear is your body telling you your about to get hurt, and you are if you play the Trojans.
Say what you will, in the coming weeks the SEC and Big 12 will knock one another off. In the end USC will be ranked #3 or 4, so you’ll be OK; well unless Mizzu wins the Big 12, or either Bama or Florida loses 1 and wins the CCG. In either of those scenarios USC will be ranked #2 and then you BETTER WORRY, in fact you better PANIC. USC won’t play a weak azz Big 12 D against you, they’ll bring the pain.
Don’t kid yourselves, this is the fastest defense in college football with the biggest hitter, and best LB in the game. USC doesn’t need to score a lot, the D keeps them in any game.
To the Jackass that made the lame comment about Stanford scoring 23; 6 garbage points in the final seconds against 2nd stringers, only Georgia counts those.
To the Homer that made the asinine comment about PAC 10 rhetoric, what a crock, only you SEC Homers identify with your conference to the degree you do. USC wins in or out of conference.
Don’t bring the lame azz SOS argument. The 6 years prior to this USC’s SOS averaged #14, 4 times #8 or better, #1 in 2002.

Georgia defense. Why do all the fans hate the D so much? Does anyone watch the entire dog games. The final score is not always an indicator of how well a defense is playing. against UF- 4 TD’s under 40 yard drives. Kentucky - 3 TD’ under 35 yard drives. Last I checked, we won the south carolina, kentucky , and auburn games because of our defense alone. INT on the last drive of two of those games, and downs in the last one.
Special teams and offense are the two units on our team that need to be discussed when it comes to poor play. 0 points and 2 tunrovers in 1st half against alabama. 3 points and 4 turnovers in entire game for 1st team offense against florida. You have to admit we are not going to beat two great teams when you score 0 in 1st half against bama and 3 for the whole game against UF.
Oh, special teams stink as well. missed Fg’s and terrible returns on kickoffs, blocked punts.
Please lay off the D. and thank them for single handedly winning 3 SEC games - USC, Kentucky, and Auburn. Oh, and giving up only 14 each to tenn. and vandy is respectable as well, and 10 to arizona st.. How many games has the offense won for us this year? one? maybe LSU, no I doubt it, that game the defense scored 17 points off turnovers. Lay off Martinez and the D.

Nobody is saying that Bama is going to crush you, although we did crush you the last time we met 34-7 in a conference championship game. And of course we did crush you in 2005 31-3 when you were heavily favored. You did squeak out a win late in the 4th qtr in 06 when Nelson had a pick6 with 5 minutes left in the game.
My question is that if we’ve won 3 out of 4 against you including 2 blowouts where do you get off thinking you’re gonna blow us out? You are playing Bama which unlike UGA has a history, including a very recent history of beating you down.
This is one football program that comes into the Fla. game with the unshakable belief that we will always win against UF. You just don’t seem to understand that.
You may very well win. You have an excellent team. But if you think you’re gonna lay the wood to Bama you need to get out of your swamp cause I think that swamp gas down there is clouding your judgement!

Alabama: Well Coached, Discipline, Few Penalties Rank #1
Florida: Well Coached, Discipline, Few Penalties Rank #4
Georgia: Wear Black Jerseys, Thugs, Soldja Boys, Lots of Penalties/Personal Fouls….hmm…see a pattern here?

You guys must stop with the history. Notre Dame has history, Michigan has history, Army has history, University of Chicago has history, Columbia has history, TCU has history. They all have history. History does not compensate for speed, nor does it compensate for possible shaky play of the QB. It used to be said of Florida—JUSTIFIABLY!!!—that they have the ego of Notre Dame and the HISTORY of Vanderbilt. That page has been turned. I feel pretty good about Alabama in Atlanta because I’ll know where they are coming from. And even though they are big, skilled and well coached—One ingredient is still missing. They just don’t scare you. You just CAN’T let some of the SEC teams they have let hang around stay close for that long.I understand perfectly the HORRIFIC nature of the loss to Mississippi. It was somewhat comparable to USC losing to Stanford, AND if it keeps Florida out of BCS Title Game they would have only themselves to blame. I don’t think that will happen if they win out as pollsters just WON’T allow a rematch of Big 12 teams. it would end this crazy thing they have going. Sorry, I was discussing the Ole Miss loss—-In actuality it was almost cleansing and showed them what they needed to do. Forget about Demps and Rainey and the speed at WR and TE and cohesion of offensive line and intricacy of offense. It comes down to having two of the best offensive players in college football on the field at the same time. I can see Florida scoring 28. Can you honestly see Alabama scoring 28?? That is why the Vegas line would open right now with Florida as an 8 1/2point favorite. That is not me talking. That is people who build a lot of very big and expensive hotels talking. I respect Alabama IMMENSELY!!!And if Florida had ONLY good special teams play that would be a factor. Florida’s kickoff return, punt return, punt block and fake punt games transcend good. In fact that crazy Meyer will just as soon put something on with a 4th and 7 at his own 32 as he would punt it. Think that affects the punt return game?? The last factor is having watched Nick coach the Dolphins, as I watched Spurrier coach the Skins and Petrino coach the Falcons and on and on and on—I have come to the realization that all these hot shot college coaches—and that would include Meyer—should realize all those fancy resumes in college are mostly about having a clear competitive edge in at least 8 games a year. Couple that with having a fertile area in which to recruit and basically the ELITE programs maybe have 4 competitive games a year—Go 2-2 you got 10 wins, go 1-3 you can say “Hey, I won 9 games, go 3-1 and NOW we are talking special. BUT the NFL is still about coaching MEN and not boys and the MEN are not going to buy your crap like some kid whose scholarship you control. Think it’s an accident why that clown at FSU NEVER got a sniff from an NFL team? And EVEN NOW there are guys who certain schools never have to worry about losing to the NFL. Won’t name them!! Nick and Stevie probably closed the pipeline from college to NFL for a long time. No Miss. States, Vandys, Kentuckys or Directional Schools on NFL schedules.

Here’s a hypothetical game I use to see who I REALLY think will win a game. It’s a little crazy, but bear with me. I Assume I am in Las Vegas the weekend of SEC Championship Game, while i am there I run into a Mafioso type who takes a liking to me because he thinks I have brought him luck around the tables. Now let’s fast forward to 2 hours before the game and the guy in a drunken stupor has had me brought to his suite. There he tells me he wants me to pick the winner—just the winner NO POINTS INVOLVED—of the Alabama-Florida game. He DEMANDS I make a pick because he thinks I am lucky. He is going to bet 5 million. However, before I give him my choice he tells me “Get it right, I give you 2 Mil, miss it and you’re gone”. Who do I take in the Florida-Alabama game under that scenario??? That would PROBABLY take the sentiment out of my pick. I would take Florida straight up. Who would you take?? REALLY????

KNOW YOUR DAWGS ?????
How long does this drivel continue ? With 200 players and a bench from endzone to endzone, this should take 4 years at the rate of 1 player per week. Do AJC readers really have this much of an appetite for the irrelevant ?
We know all we need to know about these dawgs which is that they are: 1. uncommitted 2. uninterested 3. unprepared 4. uncoached 5. undereducated

Florida has a great team, but the statistic of six SEC lopsided wins should not be given historical signficance.
Sure, it has not been done before, but Urban Meyer is almost in a class by himself in leaving his first teams in for almost every minute of blowout games.

Where’s your criticism of Florida for playing the Citadel?
You and your cronies in the sports media killed Auburn in 2004 and used the Citadel as the reason Auburn was jobbed out of the NC. While AU had more top 15 opponents on their schedule, they were crucified for having the Citadel on their schedule. So, why the inconsistencies?
Just another reason why D1 needs a playoff.
