Georgia takes care of business at Auburn

After a few weeks of getting beat up pretty good, your humble scribe bounced back with an 8-2 record last week. I said that Penn State- Iowa would be close but I didn’t have the guts to pick the Hawkeyes. If you saw a Cincinnati win over West Virginia coming, then more power to you.

That gives us an overall record of 70-40 for the season. It’s hard to believe how fast those 11 weeks have flown by.

This week looks like the calm before next week’s storm of big games. That’s when surprises usually happen. Let’s see if there are any surprises in this week’s edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Georgia (8-2) at Auburn (5-5): On paper it looks like Georgia might be in trouble at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Bulldogs lost another offensive lineman this week. The defense is not playing well and giving up a ton of points. Fans are upset because Georgia didn’t live up to the preseason expectations. After barely escaping Kentucky with a win, this could be a trap game for Georgia.

Nope.

As long as Matthew Stafford, Knowshon Moreno and A.J. Green can make it off the bus healthy, Georgia should be fine. Whatever is ailing Georgia’s defense will be cured when it meets Auburn’s offense. Georgia 24, Auburn 7.

2. South Carolina (7-3) at Florida (8-1): The Gators are the hottest team in the country right now and appear to have a clearly defined path to the BCS championship game. What would knock the Gator Express into the ditch would be an upset loss to the Head Ball Coach, Steve Spurrier. Two years ago Florida had to block a field goal on the last play of the game to beat South Carolina and keep its national championship hopes alive. If Spurrier can come up with some kind of offense to hold on to the ball, this one could be close. Gators still win. Florida 28, South Carolina 21.

3. Miss. State (3-6) at Alabama (10-0): Like Florida, No. 1 Alabama has already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game on Dec. 6. Mississippi State has been struggling all season but Sylvester Croom always has something special for his alma mater. Mississippi State has won two straight games against Alabama. My sense is that the Crimson Tide defense will be hitting on all cylinders now that NT Terrence Cody is at full speed again. Alabama 27, Miss. State 14.

4. Vanderbilt (5-4) at Kentucky (6-4): Vanderbilt will try yet again to become eligible for its first bowl since 1982. Kentucky lost a heartbreaker to Georgia but in the process found its quarterback of the future in Randall Cobb. Cobb ran for 82 yards and three touchdowns against the Bulldogs. He gives Kentucky a much- needed running dimension on offense. That will be enough to beat the Commodores at home. Kentucky 24, Vanderbilt 17.

5. Boston College (6-3) at Florida State (7-2): The top two defenses in the ACC square off in what is bound to be a low scoring game. Boston College picked up a shutout last week against Notre Dame (17-0). Florida State rallied from a 10-0 deficit to take care of Clemson 41-27. The difference in this game is that Florida State’s defense will be able to force BC QB Chris Crane into turnovers. The Seminoles also have a running threat in quarterback Christian Ponder. Florida State 21, Boston College 13.

6. Duke (4-5) at Clemson (4-5): Dabo Swinney looked like he might be coaching his way into a job when Clemson took a 10-0 lead against Florida State last week. Now Swinney needs to take a step towards getting the Tigers bowl eligible. Clemson gets a slight edge because it is playing at home but a word of warning for the Tigers: This ain’t your old Duke. If you come out flat against David Cutcliffe’s team, you’ll get beat. Clemson 17, Duke 14.

7. North Carolina (7-2) at Maryland (6-3): Miami’s 16-14 win over Virginia Tech Thursday night puts North Carolina in control of its own destiny in the ACC Coastal. The Virginia Tech defense gave Maryland quarterback Chris Turner a hard time last week. North Carolina’s defense is better as it leads the nation in interceptions with 18. This will be close because Maryland is tough at home (4-0). North Carolina 28, Maryland 24.

8. Wake Forest (6-3) at N.C. State (3-5): If Maryland loses again, then Wake Forest (4-2 ACC) controls its own destiny in the ACC Atlantic. The Deacons were impressive last week with a solid 28-17 win over Virginia. The running game is finally working again and that should be enough to beat the Wolfpack in Raleigh. Wake Forest 23, N.C. State 17.

9. Ohio State (8-2) at Illinois (5-5): A year ago Illinois handed Ohio State it’s only loss in the regular season by beating the Buckeyes in Columbus. Despite the Illinois record, this is a dangerous game for Ohio State, which can still go to the Rose Bowl if it wins out and Michigan State beats Penn State next week. Illinois quarterback Juice Williams puts a scare into the Buckeyes but Jim Tressel’s team still finds a way to win. Ohio State 21, Illinois 17.

10. Texas (9-1) at Kansas (6-4): Despite its one-point loss to No. 2 Texas Tech on Nov. 1, Texas can still reach the Big 12 championship game if it beats Kansas and Texas A&M while Texas Tech loses next week at Oklahoma. This looks a little like a trap game because the Jayhawks can throw it pretty well with quarterback Todd Reesing. But Kansas gave up 45 last week to Nebraska. Colt McCoy and the Longhorns will score at least 50. Texas 52, Kansas 28.

Tony, As a TN fan, I was disappointed for you not to make mention of this weeks matchup with the Vols taking on the bye week. I personally think TN fumbles into their own endzone and the bye week wins 7-0. Trying to bring some humor to this awful season for us Vol fans!

Always good to see anice sense of humor, keep it up !!! Oh, and bye week can be a pretty tough opponent as well. Depends on how many DUI’s etc happen that week.

Hey Homer, what do you mean “on paper it looks like Ga. might be in trouble” at Auburn. “On paper,” Georgia should be a 4 touchdown favorite. All the statistics (on paper) favor the Dogs. If you’re going to use a cliche, use one that fits.

I think UT comes up with an interception late in the 4th quarter to send this one into overtime. UT hands off to the endzone on it’s first play of overtime and Bye week wins with a 2 point safety.

Tony, you got no GUTS dude; we both know you should have gone ahead and picked USC to slap the gators…no guts no glory.

For a uga bulldog homeboy…you sure don’t have any balls!

regarding the off week for the vols…don’t laugh at Mike’s comments above…cuz tennessee will lose later today on the practice field 7-0 and thats with the team getting the day off!

Come on awbarn…dump those pups…they are way over rated.

One last thing here…clemson loses again…ROTFLMFAO for sure on that one.

Seems like only yesterday clemson, tennessee, awbarn all signed big contract extensions with huge buy outs for their headcoaches (actually only 4 or 5 months ago) and then after a few games…POW dump them coaches and give them lots and lots of money; the ADs should all be booted for that nonsense…awbarn still holding on to their sanity but only by a feather.

Go C0CKS! beat the crap out of fla on GAMECOCK Saturday in gainsville.

Don’t see how SC, Miss. St. and Maryland score as many points as you are allowing. Those are not great offenses and they are playing top-flight defenses. I think they score 7-10 points fewer. On the other hand, a little surprising you are only giving Auburn 7. I’m thinking Dawgs, 31-20.

By Will

Big Tone,

Nice pic on my dawgs, but I disagree on the score….This years team is the worst I have ever seen at playing with a lead, and expect another penalty-filed fiasco with a couple of costly turnovers and some horrid playcalling in the red-zone to boot. I like UGA 37-35 in a strange overtime game.

I also think one of the top 2 teams in the SEC will lose this week. My gut tells me its BAMA but I have this strange feeling about the Evil Genious. This game is the biggest of his USC carrier and if he can win this one, it will turn the program around for the following couple of years. Do not count this guy out. I predict USC 27 Turds 20 and a river of tears for Urban and Tebow.

If you knew anything whatsoever about the Georgia/Auburn rivalry, you would know that besides all the factors that Tony listed, the lower-ranked team in this series usually wins. Of course, there is the fact that the road team usually wins too, but let’s not get ourselves thinking too much for a Friday.

Bleed red and black here, BUT ALWAYS pull for EVERY SEC team out of conference. Have my favorites in some inter-conference games, but not the UF-USC east game. Won’t be surprised if the cocks scare UF. Spurrior is still one of the best game day coaches.

UGA-Aub.? This game ALWAYS scares me!! On paper UGA should be fine. HOWEVER all you oldtime SEC fans know this is a strange and unpredictible series! That and the fact that Aub. has athletes and could well be playing for Tubby’s job worries me. I will take a one point win right now!!!

I’d bet a vital organ that either Alabama or Florida drops a game before the SECCG, if not both. You can see this coming from a mile away. Alabama hasn’t looked all that impressive to me lately. If there were a National Championship for the first half of the season they’d win it hands down, but there isn’t. Florida is due for another Ole Miss-like dud. They can’t keep playing like their playing. Look, they’re a good team and I love watching them play, but all the bounces have gone their way. What happens when the ball bounces the other way? It will and we’ll just have to see.

No, I don’t have any X’s and O’s to back this up. I don’t need them. This is college football. Go with the gut people. Its more reliable than your head in this crazy game.

Tony, What’s with all the defensive battles predicted across the board? According to you, out of the 20 teams that play in the games you picked, only ONE team will score more than 28 points this week? Come on, man. That’s just not realistic. I don’t think South Carolina stands a snowball’s chance of holding UF under 40 points, and neither Vandy nor UK can stop anyone, including each other. Bama only scores 3 TDs and a couple of FG against Miserable State? I don’t think so. Seven points for Auburn against the Dawgs’ worthless defense? It’s almost like you outsourced your picks to your wife this week.

31-0 at the half?!!!

Well UGA fans - your season can still end 11-2!!!!!!

But with unrealistic pre-season expectations, injuries, a young inexperienced O-Line, poor coaching, special teams collapse, a defense that lost it’s identity, and two huge blowouts - your season now seems pretty irrelevant.

With the BUZZ KILLS against BAMA and the Gators - UGA proved not to be worthy of mention when talking about the ELITE of College Football.

I can sense from my UGA friends that even if you go 11-2 - it’s been a failure of a season - lost fan enthusiam at this point - going through the motions, hoping for no more embarrassment, knowing that UGA is irrelent, playing out the season.

Well guys - keep you head up! Still could go 11-2 and represent the SEC against the Big 10 on News Year Day.

And understand - historically - this is what UGA football is about. Even with all the frustration and irrelevant to the national college football scene - this will still be one of the best UGA football teams in your mediocre history.

As much as I would like to think UGA is so over rated that they could blow this game to Auburn, alas UGA would have to play unbelievably bad for that to happen. Auburn is THAT awful, and I’m an Auburn fan. We had fits with a 1A school last week and have an offense that would make a Pop Warner team snicker. I’ve seen some bad Auburn teams in my day but I can’t remember a worse prepared or coached team. We have — well, I should say HAD before our injuries mounted — the talent to compete but for some reason Tuberville is more concerned about showcasing how NOT to run a spread offense than he is in winning football games. Worst coaching job I’ve seen since Tiny Terry was banging booster daughters.

Have fun UGA and please try and have some sympathy once you are up by 5 touchdowns and save your starters for Tech…..PLEASE!!!

Self-proclaimed expert. You obviously are anything but. Bama and Fla both win out to meet for the right to go to the championship game. Don’t understand what you mean about bama looking less than impressive. The LSU game was tough but before that game we had trailed another team for all of 1:15 seconds through the first 9 games. That’s called dominance. Where do you get your info from? As for Florida it sure takes a helluva lot of lucky bounces to beat your last couple of opponents 49-10 and 63-5. Lucky bounces my butt. Those were buttkickings.

By reality check

November 14, 2008 10:12 AM | Link to this

Tony, I hope you are right about Georgia/Auburn, but this series regularly produces upsets of the favored team.

Georgia’s defense may have given up a lot of points, but that is more due to turnovers and special teams play than defensive yards per game. In that category we are at a respectable 308 yards per game. That is about what Auburn’s defense is averaging (305) and we have played much better offensive opponents than they have.

Plus we have the visiting team advantage.

On paper 24 to 7 sounds right, but with the history of upsets it could go either way.

This week’s completely fallible predictions——

(1) Georgia can’t seem to win the big ones, but Auburn no longer qualifies as a “big one.” Besides that, you generally have to score more than once to win a college football game. Dawgs over Tigers by 21.

(2) The Evil Genius lurks, and South Carolina is showing signs of coalescing into a pretty good team, but without the presence of SOS on the sidelines, this game would not merit mention. The Gamecocks’ defense is good, but the Gators’ offense is better. The Evil Genius’ offense will have a couple of big plays against the Gators’ secondary, but it won’t be enough. Gators over ‘Cocks by 17.

(3) The Alabama-Mississippi State game could be a blow-out, but it won’t be. This season, Alabama rises to the level of its competition. Expect the Tide to turn in a performance adequate to beat the Bulldogs, nothing more. Tide over Dogs by 14.

(4) The Kentucky-Vanderbilt game is tough to predict, but it seems that the Commodores have lost their psychological edge from the first half of the season. Losing to Duke will do that to you. Sorry, Wildcat fans, but Vandy is still the sentimental favorite. Sorry, Vandy fans, but SEC fan sympathy isn’t enough. Wildcats over Dores by 10.

(5) Florida State over Boston College. Why? Warm weather advantage and greater athleticism by FSU. Seminoles over Eagles by 7. Bobby may win the ACC this year, but he should still retire. The FSU program will not return to greatness without a head coaching change.

(6) This ACC match-up of Duke and Clemson smells a lot like this week’s Vandy-UK game in the SEC. Tough to predict. Both teams have lost four of their last five. Prediction: one of these teams will find a way to win, but I won’t bet on it.

(7) An improving North Carolina increasingly looks like the class of the ACC, but inconsistent Maryland has played lights out from time to time. My money is on consistency and good coaching. Davis’ Tarheels over the Terps by 13.

(8) Wow, how the mighty have slipped. Wake Forest is struggling to stay relevant in the ACC, but they still have enough juice to beat lowly NC State. Deacons over Wlofpack by 14.

(9) Does anyone still believe that Florida made a mistake by replacing the Zooker with Urban Meyer? The Zooker is a great recruiter, but a horrible disciplinarian and a mediocre game-day coach. When he is gone, someone else will win a Big Ten championship with his recruits. Buckeyes over the Illni by 10.

(10) Texas vs. Kansas? Prediction: the defensive secondaries are going to get a good cardio work-out. Do these guys still play defense? Before it’s over, this good sound like a basketball score. Longhorns over Jayhawks by more points than I have fingers and toes.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer (whoever they are), and may the best teams win (they usually do).

I couldn’t help but notice watching the news last night they were showing all the dawgs players dancing on the sidelines and taunting the Auburn players across the field in the Auburn-UGA game last year.

What a classless, punk@SS bunch of thugs. It reminds me of when they started dancing on Vandy’s logo last year after beating Vandy of all teams. And the end zone celebrations last year against the gators. Then they were dancing and jumping around on blackout night against Bama as if they had already won the game. Good thing for Bama that they were able to punch the dawgs in the mouth and grind their sorry butts into cat food. Knowshow Knowshon(34 yards) wasn’t popping up after every play with his hands behind his hips after the Bama players body slammed him a couple times. I hear he left the game with injury after too many of those beatdowns. Also nice to see the mighty gators beat the ever living @ell out of the dawgs 49-10. The dancing clowns folded right after halftime and took their usual(16 out of 19) @sspounding at the hands of the gators.

Why do you guys act like CMR is some kind of classy saint when his teams behave like thugs? Total lack of class. Is this fraud of a coach ever going to instill some class and sportsmanship into these punks? I love to watch the dawgs loose cause they are the most thugish team in the conference by far. WTF??? and Ross,

Ross, don’t know what you are talking about last year was supposed to be a golden season for Bama? It was a transition year in Saban’s first year. And yes, we actually did go to a bowl game and win. Obviously you don’t know much about football.

As for where Bama has been lately? Let me school you boys because we don’t have to go all the way back to Bear Bryant. For God’s sakes the man has been dead 25 years so let it rest.

In case you didn’t know anything bout football Bama was the 4th winningest program of the 90s and won the national title along with a couple sec titles. Nuff said about that.

As for the 2000s we posted 10+ win seasons 3 times in the last 7 years, 2002, 2005, and this year so its not as if we fell off the planet. The poor seasons in between are a result of the 2nd worst probation ever handed down. 21 schollies and 5 years probation. Most programs would never have recovered and some would have taken a decade or more to recover.

Now that the probation is over and the schollies restored you must face the inevitable fact that we will be just like we were in the 90s, a dominant, consistent top 5 team. Oh, and by the way. We have the youngest team in the nation with only 9 seniors on our 85 man roster. We are barely getting started on our RETURN TO DOMINANCE. You guys are going to be taking @sskickings for years to come. Its here to stay and you know it! Deal with it you losers!

Bama hasn’t been relevant for 10 years? I guess being ranked 3rd for most of 2005 season means you’re not relevant. I guess winning the sec 9 years ago in 1999 doesn’t mean being relevant. Or maybe you didn’t know that just like you didn’t know we had a black president now. Go back to your watermelon patch you idiot.

Dawgs should pull away in the second half and win easily. Auburn can’t pass and dawgs will play a more inspired defense to slow down the run game. Although AU has a good defense they can’t stop Stafford, MoMass, Green and Moreno. Dawgs win 27 - 10.

I agree with those who question the author’s statement that “on paper” Georgia looks to be in trouble. What paper is this guy reading? Everything in print shows that the Dogs should be 20 point favorites. That this is a rivalry game in which the home team often loses is something that’s not “on paper.” Mr. Barnhart, your use of such boilerplate language is tired and inaccurate. I assume what you mean to write is that: “On paper Georgia should win easily, however, taking into account add’l injuries and the series’ history, this could be a trap game so the Bulldogs should be wary.” BTW: Bama fans, when your team beats Auburn more than once every six years, you may join this blog. Come on, give it up. Getting to the last game of the season with a good record before we beat you doesn’t make you relevant. I mean you can’t even beat us in your own yard! Its Tuberville Field until further notice. Sorry. I know its hard to hear the truth but you guys more than most love to live in the past. Hell, you spit out records from 15-20 years ago like they were last year, for gods sake.

Hey white people are racist,

Which is it? Do you want to live in the past or talk about this year? Or when you talk about the past do you only want to start at a point in time that benefits you such as 6 years ago? Or if we talk about the past lets just talk about the complete past in which we have 12 ncs to your 1, we have 21 sec titles to your 6, and we own your @ss in the all time series. Which do you prefer to talk about? The past, as in the complete past, or the present? Either way you lose unless you just want to pick certain points in time. You are just a freaking idiot!

Um…methinks the doggie nation is reacting a little too much to Bama Stan’s comments. Considering that the Tide came into the black shirt’s house of pain and obliterated UGA, you’d think a little more respect would be in order.

And if you want to talk about relevance in the SEC or nationally, keep in mind that Bama last won a national title in 1992 and Georgia last won in 1980. Bama will be appearing in their 6th SEC CG in the game’s 17th year, Georgia has only played in 3 SEC CG’s with their last appearance being 2005.

You guys should strongly consider looking in the mirror before making ridiculous comments about another team’s limited relevance.

USC Gamecock - I thought these would get your blood pumping for the game tomorrow. * Any of this getting through that little old blue bonnet of yours * Boy, you cover about as much as a flapper’s skirt in a high wind * Course you know this means war * Fortunately I always carry a spare set of feathers * Gal reminds me of the highway between Forth Worth and Dallas - no curves * Go, I say go away boy, you bother me * I say that dog is lower than a snake full of buckshot * Looks like the boy genius is tryin’ to show me up * Nice boy but he’s got more nerve than a bum tooth * Nice girl, but about as sharp as a sack of wet mice * Now cut that out boy, or I’ll spank you where the feathers are thinnest * Now let me know when I come to something that interests you * Now looka I say looka here * Now that’s no way for a kid to be wastin his time, readin’ that long-haired gobbledegook * Oh, that woman, got a mouth like an outboard motor * Pay attention to me boy! I’m not just talkin’ to hear my head roar * Put that egghead book down boy * Scared - who me - course I’m not squared * Smart boy, got a mind like a steel trap - full of mice * That boy’s as strong as an ox, and just about as smart * That dog’s as subtle as a hand grenade in a barrrel of oat meal * This boy’s more mixed up than a feather in a whirlwind * What in the name of Jesse James do you suppose that is * What in the world’s that hen up to now * What’s all the whoopin’ and hollerin about, boy * What’s the big idea bashing me on the noggin with a rolling pin * Who’s responsible for this unwarranted attack on my person * You just know I’m gonna do something about this * You know, there just might be a market for bottled duck * You’d like that, wouldn’t you boy

Hey BAMA STAN - just wait until Nick Saban comes strolling out of a topless bar or has an affair with one of the UA AA secretaries and knocks her up.

Alabama rednecks always forget the past and repeat it.

Louisiana- Monroe also wants to put you on the schedule next year.

2002 Notre Dame(8-0)Green Uniforms BC wins 2006 FSU Black Uniforms BC wins 2008 Probably the same result

It is a mistake to use the specialty uniforms against BC. It motivates them. Also, do not discount the revenge factor for BC in this game. They were #2 in the country last year on ABC and lost to FSU. Don’t think that BC won’t bite and claw to win this one.

1 The Dawgs always find a way to keep a lesser team in the game for 4 quarters. GA 17 - UA 10.

2 Upset Game Of The Week - The Cocks peck out a win over The Gators 17 - 14.

3 Bama wins by 10.

4 Two good teams are really going to go at it. KY & Vandy should be a good game to watch. Winner? This one is a U - Pick It.

5 - 9 Who cares.

10 Texas wins this one big and they won’t lose again this season including the post season bowl game.

Not so fast my friend. I hear that Urban Meyer has been known to choke on cocks. Whoa. Gators win but closer than the experts think as they are looking ahead to that huge matchup against…………………………………………………………………………………The Citadel. Now that’s gonna be one helluva game! We just might have to bring Gameday in town for that one.

Mr. B- Have you ever picked against the Dawgs? Just wondering. I hope they smack Auburn in the mouth but it just seems that everytime I see your weekly pick, you have UGA winning. Stastically, it makes sense but I trully believe you are a biased journalist.

By the way, Maryland upsets NC. Maryland is 3-0 against ranked teams at Maryland.

And the Bama / Miss State game could a 7 point difference.

By dan

Tony..

  1. UGA 31-19 over Auburn
  2. Gators romp over South Carolina 42-17( Garcia will have a bad day)
  3. Bama over MSU 27-14 seems about right.
  4. Kentucky over Vandy 24-21 5..FSU 16-13 over Boston College 6.Clemson 20-14 over Duke( Swinney’s a clown) 7.Maryland over North Carolina 20-10

Don’t have an opinion on the rest.

Well, almost time for the South’s oldest rivalry. Yeah it’s a family feud, but aren’t family fights always the dirtiest? The bloodiest fist fight I ever saw was between first cousins in the parking lot of an Alabama juke joint. It should have been held in a chicken wire cage and shown on pay-for-view! This should be a real SEC game, the classic “knife fight in a ditch”. Good luck to War Eagle and all My AU friends, starting tomorrow!
