Can the HBC keep South Carolina close?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:
1. Can the Head Ball Coach keep South Carolina close? Two years ago South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier returned to Florida for the first time and almost broke the Gators’ hearts. His offense rolled up over 400 yards and Florida needed to block a South Carolina field goal attempt on the last play of the game to win 17-16. It almost cost Florida the 2006 national championship. Florida is again knocking on the door of a national title as Spurrier arrives on Saturday at The Swamp. He’s got a great defense. But Florida has scored 243 points in its last five games. Can his offense do enough to keep this one close?
2. Does Auburn have one good game in them? On paper there is no way that Auburn should even be close to Georgia on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Yes, the Georgia defense is struggling but the Auburn offense really isn’t good enough to take advantage of that in a big way. But this game has a strange feel to it. I have seen some bizarre things happen in this rivalry over the years. You have to figure that sooner or later Auburn’s offense will have one decent game where the Tigers finally put it all together. Could that game be on Saturday?
3. Will Alabama come out flat against Mississippi State? Every week Alabama coach Nick Saban warns about complacency and making the effort to improve over what you were the week before. Alabama had a very tough overtime win (27-21) at LSU last Saturday. Fans are already talking about the SEC championship game and perhaps the BCS title game. Auburn comes up in a couple of weeks. It would only be natural for the Crimson Tide to look past the Bulldogs (3-6). Mississippi State has won two straight against Bama. Sylvester Croom, an Alabama grad, will have his guys ready.
4. Can Virginia Tech break Miami’s hold on Thursday nights? Virginia Tech goes to Miami tonight for a huge game in the ACC Coastal as both teams are 3-2 in the division. Miami is 12-1 in Thursday night games and 8-0 when it plays on Thursday nights at home. It is also the last home game for the Hurricane seniors. Virginia Tech looked pretty good in bouncing Maryland 23-13 last Thursday. This has a chance to be a pretty good one.
5. Can Vanderbilt FINALLY become bowl eligible? For the fifth time this season Vanderbilt (5-4) will try to win game No. 6 and become eligible for its first bowl since 1982. Here is a fun stat if you don’t pull for Vanderbilt: Since 1982 the Commodores are 0-17 in games where a win could have made them bowl eligible. In that stretch of four losses this season Vanderbilt has lost close games to Mississippi State (17-14), Georgia (24-14), and Duke (10-7). I know the SEC is pulling for the ‘Dores. If Vanderbilt doesn’t became bowl eligible, the SEC may come up two teams short of filling its nine bowl slots.

Vanderbilt will bcome bowl eligible; however, it may not come until next week against ut.
KY’s new QB really looked good against GA last week. If Vandy is able to sack him and keep pressure on him (GA didn’t)then Vandy has a chance to win. But I’m afraid Brooks has Bobby Johnson’s number.

For the life of me, I can’t see why everyone is using the phrases “They suck”, “Fire Mark Richt” and “Things are bad in Athens” when talking about UGA. We are 8-2 and lost to the #1 and #4 ranked team in the country! Teams ranked #1 in the preseason are based on what they did last year and who they had coming back. It doesn’t mean a thing. UGA is very good, just not great. I wonder how many 1-A teams would give their left legs to have a record like that? Our defense is not good, but we still give up less yards per game than Texas Tech, Texas and Oklahoma who are ALL ranked higher than UGA! The national championship would be great, no doubt, but does that mean if you DON’T win it that you stink? I love UGA, cheer when they win and suffer when they lose. Richt’s record as a head coach is in the top 7 of ALL NCAA coasches in their first 8 seasons. All you haters keep spewing your venom and UGA will just keep winning WAY more than they lose!

UGA will beat Auburn, but it will be close. Their D is too good and our D is too bad.
Florida will splatter the Gamecocks. UH simply has too much speed and too many playmakers on offense. UF’s D will smother an average SC offense.
Alabama will keep doing just enough to win. Bama by 10.
Va. Tech vs. Miami….zzzzzzzzzzz
Vandy’s dream has ended. UT will stagger across the finish line winning by a field goal.

1.) Florida will smash SC….won’t even be close.
2.) UGA is much better than Auburn, but the Tigers have always been the pesky spoiler for UGA over the years.
3.) Bama WILL NOT look past MSU. They have redemption on their mind after the last 2 seasons.
4.) Who cares about ACC football?
5.) GO VANDY!

USC has no chance against UF. Maybe earlier in the year, but the Gators are serious and rolling now. If Auburn is within 3 touchdowns of the Dogs, it just shows how disappointing the season has been for Georgia. (Of course, the Tigers season has been disappointing also.)

Rick: this Auburn fan would gladly trade positions with UGA this year. No surprise there, right? Unfortunately, I’m not shocked that there are some calling for Richt to be fired. It is the nature of a certain type of UGA fan.
I’ve never been a fan of Tuberville, but I’m also not calling for his head at this point either. Down seasons are inevitable; it’s what a coach does about them that’s important.
AU needs one win to become bowl eligible, bit that win would have to come from either UGA this Saturday or from Alabama two weeks later. The prospects aren’t looking too good.

Tony,
I agree that Spurrier will find a few tweaks to the scheme to keep things close this week but not sure he has the horses to get over the hump. I have a feeling he is hoping the lizards are looking past his chickens to the tribal council coming up.
shane#1, I really can’t understand DAWG fans who are callin’ for Coach Richt’s head on a stick??? He’s a great coach, great recruiter and a real stand up guy. Just unreal!
SEC Fans: Now I know that y’all really have no love for my beloved Trojans but just wanted to tamp down the “un-neccessary” enthusiasm this morning, later today y’all will see reports of “Earthquake” reponses all over the L.A. basin and else where here in Cali. We don’t get to do that every year like y’all do with the onset of the ‘cane season. Woops. Anyway, I suspect SCar’s ‘D’ will keep it close for 9 of 10 plays, but FLA’s big play ability will make enough plays to open the score up.
AU will probably play their best game of the year, as usual, it seems that everybody usually plays their best game against us(Kentucky, FLA, VANDY,TENN, ETC, ETC,) Very frustrating not to be able to put a game away early. I guess I’d settle for another close win if that’s all I can get. Hopefully we will, but who knows.
ALA will be flat against MissSt, but ALA will win the game anyway.
Miami wins another.
Not this week, VANDY. But maybe you will get it done against TENN. Heck, if Wyoming can, why not?

Spurrier keeps it close and interesting for awhile but Gators eventually pull away and win by 2 or 3 scores.
Auburn doesn’t have a chance. Ya can’t play defense for 60 minutes. They might keep it close early but I think the dogs pull away and win by 3 scores. Too much offense and they don’t need a good defense to stop Auburn, an average d will suffice.
Bama and Missy State. After 2 straight upset losses Bama is ticked. The freight train runs over, around, and through Missy State and wins by 2-3 scores also.
Miami and Va. Tech. Who cares? Vandy? Who cares. Although I would like to see Vandy get there they had their chances and should have won the games they were supposed to win(Missy St comes to mind) to get bowl eligible.
Lastly, I just had to gloat. To all those haters who were saying BAMA goes down in death valley: I say ROLLL TIIIDE!!!! The road warriors win again. Oddly though, this was the first road game we won that was even close. That makes 19 out of the last 21 in the famed “Death Valley”. We prefer to think of tiger stadium as our home away from home. We own that house and LSU just pays us rent.

Today’s comments——
(1) Can the Head Ball Coach keep it close?! You can bet that’s not what the evil Genius is thinking. He wants to win, baby! The Gamecocks will be jacked, the Gators should know that USC is a threat to their post-season plans. Question: will the Gators’ superior talent on offense overwhelm the Gamecocks’ excellent defense? Can SOS’s on-again, off-again offense score often enough to make a game of it? Are the Gators really as good as advertised? We are going to find out a lot about both of these teams from the outcome … .
(2) Answer to TB’s question: No, Auburn will not make a game of it. The Tigers appear to be in a death spiral, and, short of UGA giving this one away, it’s hard to see AU pulling this one out. This is a character game for Mark Richt, his coaches and his players, and they better treat it as such. Good teams beat the teams they are supposed to beat.
(3) Alabama continues to play close games against lesser teams … are they saving their juice for Florida or what? Croom et al will be well motivated, but the talent differential should carry the day for Bama.
(4) Most teams slump on Thursday nights, but not Miami. The Canes Thursday night winning record is a remarkable stat across multiple coaches, two conferences, and several distinct eras of their program. Looks like Mama Fu’s island ju-ju at work on the Mainland. College football is a game of emotions, and teams thrive on small psychological edges. Bet on Miami (and Mama Fu) to continue their Thursday night record.
(5) In fairness to Vanderbilt, they lost to the fourth and tenth-ranked teams in the country. Perhaps more inexplicably, they also lost to Duke and Mississippi State. Such things happen when a team advances very quickly, and is playing better than their talent on paper would indicate. Two of their three remaining games (Kentucky and Tennessee) are clearly winnable, and they can and should be competitive in their last game (Wake Forest0. Time to man up, Dores. We’re all cheering for you.

Hey Gator man,
Why do you and everyone else keep saying Bama keeps winning close games against lesser opponents? The LSU game was close but they were still a worthy opponent playing on their home field and were ranked 15th I believe.
Every other road game we played was a blowout UGA, TENN.,Clemson, Arky. None of those games were close. Kentucky scored a consolation td with 30 seconds left to lose by 3 but statistically that game was never close and the outcome was never in doubt.
The only close game we had all year was the Ole Miss game where we jumped up 24-3 and they gradually got closer and lost 24-20. The game ended when they turned it over on downs at the 50 so really they had another 50 yards to go. Its not as if the game went down to a goal line stand or anything.
I think we all have to give Ole Miss some credit. They are vastly improved, they beat the gators in their own house, and they will be going bowling.
Before trailing LSU for a qtr saturday we had only trailed a total of 1:15 seconds the entire year and yet people still have this crazy notion that we keep winning a series of close games. Don’t believe the hype. Just look at the scores instead.

I just read an article linked from si.com on the Washington State flag relay (the reason you always see a WSU flag waving in the background on College Gameday). Pretty cool tradition. But, of course, the jorts wearing crowd down in Gainesville were the ones who threw punches and broke the flagpole. Low life rednecks. The benevolent Tebow would find a way to defend their actions though.

Atlanta Gator,
While its nice to be ranked numero uno as you say I don’t put a lot of stock in it. The way I see it this is a year where an 8 team playoff would be perfect. I really believe there are 7 great teams out there. Bama and UF in the sec, Penn St., Texas, Tex. Tech, and OU in the big 12, and USC. I think any of those teams could beat any of the others on any given day so like you said its cool to be number 1 for now but us Bama fans can’t let it go to our heads.
I just don’t consider many teams to be “lesser” teams since there are so many of these lesser teams that can jump up and beat someone in the top 7 teams I just mentioned above. Teams like Oregon St. beating USC, Iowa beating Penn St., Ole Miss beating FLA. I’m just saying that I feel fortunate to beat anybody in the sec whether its a blowout or a close game.
Anyway, I agree with you on the UF-BAMA game. It should be a helluva game regardless of who wins. If we lose we will be mad as hell but should calm down and still be happy since we’ve definitely overachieved in year 2 of Saban. I’m just happy that assuming both teams win out that the winner will definitely be in the national title game as it should be. Good luck and see you in the ATL.

The fact that any football fan would call for the dismissal of the head coach of their team for going 8-2 and only losing to two of the top four teams in the country only shows that some football fans are seriously deficient in both judgment and intelligence and need to back away from the Jack Daniels bottle and consider a lengthy stay in rehab.

Can we (UGA) stop patting ourselves on the back for being 8-2, with the 2 losses coming against top 5 teams. Those weren’t 2 losses; those were 2 slaughterhouse embarrassments. Dale——If Georgia football were ranked number 10 preseason, and Alabama and Florida were ranked in the top 10, Georgia football would almost certainly be ranked higher now. It’s tough to teach college-age players (and some coaches) not to believe the polls and their own press clippings. No matter what the team is ranked, the team still has to play twelve games against others who believe they can win, too. On any given Saturday, my friend … .

Hate to admit it but this is exactly what bothered me before the season, all the Pre-Season Hype, expectations, and at the time the schedule was an enormous task. I played for Goff and a year for Donnan and we never had such lofty expectations; but we have a coach who has brought Georgia back to the forefront of the SEC and I wouldn’t trade that anything. I do agree that we can play better on both sides of the ball and that starts with the Coaches but ultimately it’s the players that have to play the game.
Let’s keep things in perspective, YES there have been some good calls Offensively and Defensively by both Coordinators and there have been times when the calls have been Questionable but the bottom line is the Players (whether it’s good or bad) have to Execute.
Not making any excuses or pointing the finger but the players simply have to Execute. If we don’t make the Undisciplined Penalties, Protect the Ball and QB, Block, and Tackle, I’m sure the outcome would’ve been different against Bama and Florida.
Bottom Line: We do the little things, we would possibly be Undefeated. Let’s pray that we go down to the Plains and take care of Business. The guys need to play, Fast, Hard, and Fearless!!

The number of UGA fans calling for Richt’s dismissal are a tiny minority and can be discounted.
The ones calling for Martinez to get canned, on the other hand, have very legitimate reasons; especially those of us old enough to see a lot of games where the defense was coached by Erk Russell. There is simply no comparison.
No matter who sticks up for Martinez, his incompetence stands out, and no amount of excuses by Richt or anyone else can justify his remaining as defensive coordinator. When it comes to Martinez, Richt is incapable of being objective and is doing the team as well as the fans a great disservice.
Richt must learn to put the program ahead of any personal loyalty on his part. If he doesn’t, then he really should not and WILL not be the head coach

I am right here. Just like I said I would be, I have just been real busy at work today.
Good job to the gumps for their win. It was far from the blowout that yall were predicting.
I bet there was a lot of sister humpping after that OT TD from Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson.

Sylvester Croom (the nice genious) and Steve Spurrier (the evil genious) might both beat their Alma Mater this week.

Don’t be jealous. Your usc is a very good team, for a bunch of little c0cks.
I didn’t know there was a drill today. But I may take you up on that idea about the ocean; go down to the beach and catch a wave after work. It’s nice today about 80 degrees and sunny, perfect weather to surf. Maybe I’ll take a day and see Carolina in January after the game in Miami. Cya.
FIGHT ON

Tony: I may want to point out that in the last game for Miami in the Orange Bowl (Senior Night), the Canes were embarrassed by UVA 48-0. I believe that VT is 15-3 on Thursday nights as well. I guess we will see whose streak holds up tonight.

SCRules, It was posted earlier that some UGA “fans” are always after the coach’s scalp. Several true fans have stated that this is NOT the team that was picked #1 in the preseason. I believe they have something like 14 guys out for the year with injurys, several more players have missed three or four games. It looks like We will have a guard starting at LT again at AU, and poor Kiante Tripp has played so many posistions that I am not sure He will know where to line up this week. The good news is that most of these guys will be back next year and UGA won’t have to play Bama until the SECCG, if they make it to the Dome. I agree that UGA fans are lucky to have CMR, His record speaks for itself and His road record is freaking amazing! I swear there is so much b***’ You would think the Dogs were 2 and 8 instead of 8 and 2 and headed for Their umpteenth straight Bowl game!

Florida was lucky to beat Georgia—-the real UGA team just didn’t show up that day. If they played right now, UGA would win easily. I think spurrier and usc may upset uf in g’ville and if not, bama will beat florida by at least 10 points in the title game. Florida’s overrated and I can’t wait till they lose, to see their obnoxious fans crying like babies! Next year, UGA will beat UF and start a long winning streak in Jacksonville.

shane#1, hey there pard! Coach is channeling you some cool breeze vibes! We both feel for your stress on that issue, Coach Richt is a class act!! I hear ya on the o-line issue too, we’re both gonna have strong fronts back next year. We’ll have 4 starters and sevral more who have played significant minutes to back them up. We will take a major hit on the defensive side of the ball though. Well gotta go check the the Song Girls practice out, supposed to be something real special in the works for the upcoming golden homer game.
hey game(y)chicken fan: in this day and age why wouldn’t you want to be a Trojan?! Fight On!!!

Back in “Olden Times” when Valdosta High School was winning all their state championships, their fans would make an interesting bet with their opponents. They would bet that Valdosts would score more touchdowns than the other team would make first downs. And they would win the bet.
The gators will score more touchdowns than USC will make first downs. Any takers?
Dawgs will win in Auburn,52-50, Burns gets 350 yards total offense and Martinez gets a job in Washington as a spin doctor.
