For UGA defense, it’s not coaching or schemes. It’s players.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five things we learned over the weekend:
1. For UGA defense it’s not coaching or schemes. It’s players: By now everybody has psycho-analyzed what is wrong with Georgia’s defense, which has given up 125 points in its last three games. They blame everybody from the defensive coordinator (Willie Martinez) to the demeanor of the head coach, who some people say should be more of a screamer.
It’s all silly. Martinez didn’t suddenly forget how to coach this season. Mark Richt has won 80 games in less than eight seasons at Georgia by being exactly who he is. In the SEC it’s not about attitudes or schemes. It’s about players. The schemes that have worked in the past will work today with players who are talented enough to execute them correctly. The problem I see on the Georgia defense, and the one everybody knew about before the beginning of the season, was that Georgia did not have the All-SEC player coming off the edge to disrupt what the opposing offense was doing. And Georgia has really missed that kind of player when it has gone up against a mobile quarterback. This will be an issue in the final two regular season games against Auburn and Georgia Tech, who both have mobile quarterbacks.
The fact is that Georgia got beat by the No. 1 (Alabama) and No. 4 (Florida) teams in the nation. And Florida, I believe is the best team in the country right now.
Georgia has a chance to finish 11-2 for the second straight year and people are going around talking about firing coaches. Amazing.
2. As it should be, the BCS championship will be between the SEC and Big 12: It was sad to see Joe Paterno, looking every one of his 81 years, leaving the press box after Penn State had been upset by Iowa. But what that did was clear the decks for the BCS championship game that everyone wants to see between the SEC and the Big 12. All season we have argued about which conference is the best, the high-scoring Big 12 with all those great quarterbacks, or the SEC, a league that still plays defense. With the BCS top five now comprised of two teams from the SEC (Alabama, Florida) and three from the Big 12 (Texas Tech, Texas, Oklahoma), fans will get a mini-playoff in November and early December. It will take something fairly dramatic to keep the SEC-Big 12 matchup from happening. But it could happen. We’ll talk more about that later.
3. The Tennessee players really stepped up for their old coach: I hope you can pick up the sarcasm in that sentence. The Volunteers showed their anger and indignation at Phillip Fulmer’s press conference last week and spoke of the injustice of asking Fulmer to step down with football left to play on the schedule. But when it came time to play Saturday against a bad Wyoming team, the Volunteers did not live up to their name. Granted, everyone now has to admit that Tennessee just isn’t a very good team. But we’re talking Wyoming, who lost to BYU, Utah, and TCU by a combined score of 138-14. What the players did, unknowingly, was validate the decision of the administration. Fairburn’s Eric Berry has been a warrior on that team all season. He is a real football player. But I don’t know about the rest of those guys. The next coach at Tennessee, whoever he is, is going to have some work to do with this group of players. There may be a bunch of four-star talent up there, but I don’t see a whole lot of four-star hearts.
4. Steve Spurrier is doing his best coaching job at South Carolina: The Gamecocks started 0-2 in the SEC and looked like a team that was ready to collapse and have a really bad season. But Spurrier knew he had a good defense and that he had to manufacture enough offense to give his team a chance to win every week. Since that start South Carolina has won four of its last five conference games and the loss was 24-17 to LSU. The other two SEC losses were to Vanderbilt (24-17) and Georgia (14-7). The Gamecocks are 7-3 heading to No. 4 Florida this week and with that defense, which is still No. 3 in the country (256.50 ypg), they have a puncher’s chance. Remember that two years ago when Florida won the national championship, the Gators had to block a field goal on the last play of the game to beat Spurrier 17-16.
5. Tech’s game with Miami will be huge: You knew it was going to be hard for Georgia Tech to go up to Chapel Hill and win, especially after offensive tackle Andrew Gardner got hurt. Tech ran for 326 yards against a pretty good defense but just could not overcome the mistakes, which everyone knew would be a problem for this team. But consider this. When you look around at schools like Michigan, Tennessee, and Auburn that have fallen apart while trying to install a brand new offensive scheme, you realize what an incredible job Paul Johnson has done to have his first Georgia Tech team at 7-3 and still relevant in the ACC race in mid-November. A good exclamation point on Johnson’s first season would be a win over Miami a week from this Thursday. I’ll be anxious to see the fan turnout for that one.

Tony. could not have said it better myself regarding the situation at TN. There is talent there but only a handful of kids are playing with passion and heart. If I am the next coach, I look at the tapes of the last 3 games of the season and see who mailed it in already to determine spring practices.

How is it that uaag doesn’t have good players when you homer/gomers brag about ugag’s recruiting EVERY year?? Tony, let’s face it…you are full of bullshiiite. The sec is VERY weak this year. Alabammer is not that good…neither is ugag or lswho. Florida is decent but if they play Texas Tech they may give up a 100 points. If Ga. Tech can get Nesbitt and their o-line healthy before the ugag game, they may run for 500 yards on that pitiful sec defense. The sec is all hype…and if they do luck up and get in the championship game they will get blown out Ohio St. style. And, as always, Thank God and Greyhound that the sec of coaches, Chan Gailey, is gone forever.

Tony
It’s the manner in which Georgia lost those two game which has most people bent out of shape.
So now we are discrediting Georgia’s talent/ability? Where are all of these top prospects that we sign every year? This should not be an issue and I do not buy this analysis. That’s what a coach is paid to do - coach players up and I do not see that we have done that on the defensive side of the ball this year. The offensive line has been coached up, though.
I believe that talk about firing coaches is ludicrous but Martinez’s defenses have allowed some big numbers throughout the past few season.
However, I think it should be noted that special teams cost Georgia 21 points for which the defense will get blamed. In my estimation the D only gave up 17 to Kentucky…not too shabby.

Re #5: What an indictment of the acc that a team with 3 conference losses is somehow still in a race for a division and a chance at the so-called championship game? And considered ‘relevant’? But they do have 3 teams in the 2nd tier of the BCS top 25 (best of the mediocre?).

The overall defensive play of UGA is just awful, BUT one must acknowledge that the last three defensive series (the return of the Junk Yard Dawgs) against Kentucky were beautiful. The soft play of the defensive corners and safeties drives me crazy. A little more speed and several more inches in height would be helpful.

Tony,
If you are right in your comments about UGA, then whose fault is it that we don’t have the talent on defense? That’s right, the coaches who have apparently recruited poorly.

Congrats to the tide on the their victory Saturday in BTR against LSU….make certain you include J. Lee on your Christmas list as he has given out enough early presents (aka interceptions to both the dogs and tide)to start the holiday season….dam. But…after seeing LSU play the tide, gators and dogs in person….the UF Gators are far the best team of the bunch…an unless Tebow drops 4 interceptions on the tide in Atlanta…..I see the Gators playing for the BCS NC. There is no doubt in my mind that if Perriloux wasn’t such a headcase and still on the team that LSU would have only one loss at this pt….but you reap what you sow….Nevertheless should be an bigtime game in the Dome…

If it is the players on the Georgia defense, I don’t see a lot of younger, BETTER players taking over spots. Not good. You play for Spurrier and you’re better than the guy not playing well….You get your shot……not ole loyal Mark Richt. Either we ain’t got nothing better or he won’t hurt some feelings !!!!!!!!!!! That equals the Old Capital One Bowl Waiting…..Note: Alabama is NOT that good. With a solid defense, we win that game. FACT. And we would be in a BCS bowl. gotta beat AU & TECH FIRST…neither a given at this point. Oh yea, CMR say’s UK not a push over anymore..Tell that to Florida, 62-3 I think. Geez………

BCS Champs….Thanks for the kind words. UF is clearly playing the best football right now in the conference. If they get to the BCS game, they earned it. BAMA has a good shot and as a fan, I would be a little disappointed to be this close but at the same time, we had no business being here in Saban’s 2nd year so I am very pleased with the season. It is a tribute to Coach Saban and the staff that he has put together at BAMA to rebuild a lot quicker than anyone thought he would. That said, I still think BAMA will step up in the SECCG and CAN pull out a win. UF is good but Ole Miss (that’s OLE MISS) beat UF at home. I am confident we have a good shot at a neutral site! Good luck to LSU the rest of the way.

To be a consistent winner your team needs three key ingredients of quality players and coaches and the motivation by all working at the same time. I don’t see all three of these ingredients at Tennessee or Georgia. Tennessee’s problem is lack of quality players and motivation. Georgia’s problem seems to be motivation. Both teams have quality coaches that could do a better job of motivating these 18-21 year old young men.

Defense is about attitude. It is a mindset that we will take away what you do best. We will disguise blitzes, confuse quaterbacks, disrupt blocking schemes, get in the back field, jam receivers off of routes, and frustrate off coordinators. We do none of that. We take a wait and see approach which lets any team dictate what they are going to do to us before we decide how to react. I saw 4 star athletes who couldn’t get off blocks Sat. I saw players out of position, and linemen getting seal blocks on our backers because the d line wasn’t doing their jobs. We are very average on D because the coaching staff accepts average. That’s the problem. Happy 233rd birthday to the Corps, Semper Fi and GATA

1) The players aren’t making the necessary plays, but the coach’s are making a heck of a lot of mistakes as well. Ofcourse nobody should be talking “fire the coach” at Georgia. But the coach’s shoulders are draped in responsibility for the poor performances.
2) Team’s that could throw wrench’s in the expected Big 12 VS SEC plan: South Carolina, FSU, Miss St., Auburn, Baylor, Kansas, Missouri, Ok. State. Still some exciting football to be played.
3) Thanks for embarrasing yourselves and the rest of your SEC brethren Tennessee.
4) I head the Florida was favored by 22.5. Good lord thats crazy. Take S.C. and the points and go pay off your mortgage.
5) The ACC division races are both exciting and will come down to the last weekend. Kinda cool if you ask this SEC fan.

JB,
Give it a rest on your “FACT” that you would have beaten Bama with a solid defense. Anyone can play that if, shoulda, woulda, coulda routine. Note: If Alabama isn’t that good then why are we unbeaten at 10-0 and ranked no. 1. Sounds like the old resentment and envy thing to me.
I’m tired of homers like you acting like you could have won that game. We let you back into the game because we got ultra conservative in the 3rd qtr and quite frankly got a little bored. After you got away with that punt return of which there were no less than 2 blocks in the back we then scored 10 straight pts to go up 41-17. 2 garbage tds in the last 3 minutes of the game against scrubs to make it a somewhat respectable 41-30 doesn’t indicate how bad this beatdown truly was.
Shut up, get over it, and enjoy watching us and UF in the championship game as it should be.

It will be great to see the SEC vs the Big 12 in the BCS NC game. I hope for the SEC’s sake it’s Florida representing the conference and not Bama. Bama has looked like Ohio State this season (squeaking out wins left and right). The way the Big 12 teams are playing, Bama would be the new Ohio State in the NC game. Florida would at least put up a fight before losing by 14. Go Raiders!!!

Big Tone,
Gutsy win by my dawgs Saturday. Not many teams would have pulled that one out, on the road no less.
I think we will win the rest of our games now & go to a pretty good bowl and play a highly ranked Big 12 team. That game should be pretty exciting and end a successful season.
I also think we can start our farewell tour for Stafford, Moreno, Adkins and a few more. I hope CMR understands this & starts to get the guys who will be here next year some P.T. I think all of those guys will look at someone like J Owens and bolt while they still have their health. And I don’t blame them for that.

SEC officiating
I wish tony had commented on this. But he probably can’t.
The officating and replay booth call have been GAWD AWFUL this year.
Specifically there was a play on the goal line in the UF/Vandy game that was so totally blown that I almost had to go to circuit city at half time.
And I’ve seen many bad reviews and calls in other games this year.
With all the big TV money coming into the conference, this is something they need to get fixed.

“But consider this. I think too many folks either forget or don’t realize just how young and beat up our offense is. This just emphasizes, to me, what a great job Coach Johnson is doing. Youth/inexperience and injuries are definitely major contributors to inconsistent play/performance. Hopefully, the extra time off before Miami will help in the healing of some of our injured and help the youth/inexperienced gain some confidence and improve their play/technique - thinking mainly about our OL, here.
The greatest thing about Coach Johnson, though, is the positive change in attitude on this team. You can just see that, though they may get beat and make mistakes, they are fighting hard playing to win, rather than playing “not to lose”.
Win or lose… I LOVE THE YELLOW JACKETS!!
GO JACKETS!! BEAT THE ‘CANES!!

We’ve just got alot of guys on defense this year that haven’t lived up to their billing. Reshad Jones has never lived up to the hype. Asher Allen and Dannell Elerbe aren’t playing as well as they did last year. The loss of Jeff Owens was big. He might have been that dominant lineman that we don’t have right now. I don’t think our depth is all it was cracked up to be. These guys start getting tired as the game wears on. Missed tackles and penalties are the sign of a tired or maybe even lazy defense.
Never thought I’d see the day when the offense carried our football team but that is what’s happened this year. Nobody, Dawg fans and haters alike, wants to hear this, but if we finish 11-2 this year it will be a miracle given all that we’ve had to deal with. I think we will have done the best we could with what we were given. Georgia fans just don’t want to believe that we were overrated. We most definitely were.

Comments in answer to Tony——
(1) I’m sorry, but I’m not buying it. Over the last several years, UGA’s defense has a history of complete breakdowns in big games, typically for a half. The Dawgs have as many or more blue-chip recruits on the defensive side of the ball compared to other SEC teams. So, why have they not produced a dominating, or at least memorably aggressive defense? Every team suffers injuries, hardships and players lost for off-the-field reasons, but the Georgia defensive coaches are not getting the maximum effort and best performance from their players. You’re telling us that’s the players’ fault? Hard to swallow, Tony. Other defensive squads do more with less.
BTW, for all the abuse that UGA fans have hurled at Willie Martinez over the last season or two, he and his defense cannot be entirely blamed for the blow-out in this year’s Florida-Georgia game. Five of Florida’s seven touchdown drives either started at midfield or in Dawg territory. The Dawgs’ offensive miscues put their defensive teammates behind the eight ball all day.
(2) Sad for Joe Paterno? Sure is. Sad for the Big Ten? Not at all. The Big Ten teams are the over-hyped darlings of ESPN and the northeastern-based media. The league is currently riding on past glories, and two over-rated Ohio State teams have had their heads handed to them in the last two BCS title games by two different SEC teams. As long as the Rose Bowl, Pac-10 and Big Ten (led by commissioner Jim Delany) continue to oppose any move to an FBS/Division I playoff, including a plus-1 format, I will cheer against them in their post-season aspirations, and make my raspberries heard along with a multitude of other college football fans.
For the record, Paterno is in favor of a Division I playoff. Good man. Old school coach. Having had several previous unbeaten teams denied the chance to play for all the marbles, he understands the importance of winning championships on the field.
As for the Big-XI- vs.-SEC BCS title game match-up, I hope it happens. From my biased viewpoint as an SEC and Florida fan, I just hope neither Alabama nor Florida stumbles before the SEC championship game. The SEC winner will need all the juice they can get to overcome the damn computer rankings to get into the title game … and make sure that two Big XII teams aren’t mathematically selected by the computers.
(3) No sense flogging this dead horse. Ol’ Smokey ain’t coming out from under the porch for the rest of the 2008 season——he can’t bear to watch, either. The only remaining question I have for the 2008 edition of the Volunteers is will Vanderbilt pull out the win over their in-state nemesis? I expect so.
Where have you gone, Robert Neyland? Volunteer Nation turns its lonely eyes to you … .
(4) There is still plenty of life left in the Evil Genius, and notwithstanding my principal loyalty to my Gainesville alma mater, I hope I live long enough, and I hope SOS coaches long enough, to win the SEC East and another SEC championship. That would be a fitting cap to a great college coaching career. I just hope that his Gamecocks don’t find a way to spoil the Gators’ 2008 BCS hopes. With a little luck, the ‘Cocks should be satisfied with an 8-4 record and a win over hated in-state rival Clemson.
BTW, is it just me, or does it seem appropriate that a “cocky” coach like SOS wound up at South Carolina?
(5) Yup, this is a big game for both teams, regardless of its immediate impact on the ACC standings. This is a character-building game for both teams, and it’s really about the future, not 2008. Georgia Tech has already exceeded all reasonable expectations for 2008. Miami’s 2008 campaign has mostly underwhelmed, but the Canes have fought tooth-and-nail to make progress as a team. The winner of this game will get a huge boost in confidence, and a win on which to hang their off-season recruiting.

Tony, you’re right as usual about UGa’s D. It’s not the X’s and O’s, it’s the Jimmys and Joes for the Dawgs.
BUT, I’m concerned that UGA barely slips by an inferior opponent (Frosh. QB, blocked punt, near KO return, fumbles, missed tackles) while UF rolls Vandy. We just don’t seem to have the on-the-field leadership and “killer instinct” that we had at the end of last year.

Barnhart you SEC pud. “As it should be”; according to who? You and the rest of the SEC homers?
It seems that the SEC and Big 12 have neglected to teach their student athletes a fundamental of football and education.
For whatever reasons the players and teams in these conferences don’t know how to play or; it appears even spell DEFENSE.
Georgia is not alone in their lack of defense, no top 10 team in the SEC or Big 12 could hold a powerful HS team to less than 7.
You better hope the BCS computer stops the Trojans from playing for a championship; they would shut you all out.
Now you goobers can start talking all your sh!t, you sure talk the talk, but the So Cal defense walks the walk.
SC fans are hoping the Oregon State Beavers win out and play Penn State in the Rose Bowl. We much prefer SC gets an at large bid and the opportunity to bury one of the soft teams you and the Big 12 homers are creaming over, Oklahoma, TT, Texas, Florida, Alabama, who cares, Bring it!
Before you start your BS, don’t forget Florida lost to ole Miss, and most everyone picks them to beat Bama, Georgia you give up points like your sister gives up the pink taco, so your fans should just shut up, and your teams, learn DEFENSE.

Tony, the problem Saturday had nothing to do with the lack of a quality pass rusher. The biggest problem I saw was having seven men in the box against a one-dimensional offense with a freshman QB that was starting his 2nd game at that position. That wasn’t “about the players”.
WM doesn’t know how to change his game plan when something isn’t working. That’s why we give up 24 points in one half to Kentucky, 31 points in one half to Alabama, and 35 in one half to Florida. He doesn’t know how to stop the bleeding.

Tony, I know you love the Dawgs as much or more as I do, but there comes a time when you have to sit back and call a spade a spade. THIS DEFENSE SUX!! I will give the defense the benefit of the doubt for drives starting inside the 20 and give the other teams offense credit for scoring. But when a team starts outside the 20, why can’t we hold them to a field goal? When we get a penalty(or bad call) why can’t we rise above it and make a stand? The only thing we can’t rise above is our poor coaching!!Does Jeff Owens make 30 points difference on the defense? I don’t think so. Does poor coaching make a 30 point difference? Right now I would have to say so.It is time for a “shake up” on the defensive front either in coaching or personnel. All I can do every Saturday is look at the results and come to the same conclusion. Our defense sux!!
If we could transfer to the Big 12, we could have fun palying 52-50 games with Stafford throwing for 500 yards a game. But this is SEC FOOTBALL!!

ATL GATOR- Yeah your analysis is probably right…
But I beg you to pluck a first day NFL draft pick off this defense.
Maybe Ellerbe gets drafted on the second day. MAYBE ASHER ALLEN. Both cold be be fee agents though.
My point is yes. Our defensive coaches must do a better job of scheming and prep work. That much I can attest to.
But in the last 10 years UGA has had defensive players drafted HAND OVER FIST IN THE NFL AND NUMEROUS 1rst ROUND DRAFT PICKS. DL has had monster first round picks. Heck we had 3 straight SS get drafted….3 Straight at the same position in college. What??? All of a sudden the coaches forgot how to coach that position????
There are 0 of those players in that starting 11.
Not putting my boys down. Just simply stating facts.
My take on it is it is a combination of both. As the season went on…..the teams we played were better and better. That helps explain the drop in defensive numbers.

Martinez didn’t forget how to coach this year; he has NEVER been a good Defensive coordinator. Look at his record over the last couple of years (e.g. his idiotic love of the 3 man rush which guarantees a QB all the time he needs to complete passes) and you will see that he is simply not a good coach and needs to be fired if Georgia is ever going to actually win it all.

Did anyone else notice…………
that on LSU’s first half interception, the LSU defensive end (or tackle) bull rushed and his hand slipped up onto the face mask of the Tide lineman, pushing his helmet up, and almost off, just like the play in the Ga/Fla game where the Dawgs were penalized and lost the interception? Same play, same crew, different call. What’s up with that? The crew in the Ga/Ky game was better, and I haven’t seen them all year. You UA and UF fans better hope the SEC office doesn’t assign Penn Wagers and Co. to the SECCG. Ga had them at the UT game earlier and they missed Moreno getting punched while on the ground. Really sloppy!

I just read a Kansas City Star columnist who made a good comment on Tennessee’s players and Coach Fulmer, which was something like — When a coach stops being a coach and becomes a CEO, his personal relationship with the players changes. The Volunteer players must not have strong feelings towards their CEO.
That’s a pretty good indictment of Fulmer and his “coaching” method.

UGA has done a poor at best job of recruiting defensive ends for as far back as I can remember. Pollack wasn’t recruited as a defensive end. Marcus was vastly overated because he seldom was double teamed due to the need to double the tackels. UGA will continue to have problems until they fix this area of their recruiting.

I think Owens would probably have been “that guy” to make offenses miserable but then that’s water under the bridge. Fact is they won in spite of the matador defense and made the stop when it counted. Play like that and it might make Auburn’s offense look good.
Yes, Fla is playing the best football in the SEC right now. If ‘Bama plays like it did Saturday against UF in the SECCG, it’ll make for a long night for them—although I think they’ll step it up (still my early pick-em is the Gators).
UT: good grief how could a team fall so far, so fast. They “woke UGA up” last year (thanks again) but tripped their way into the SECCG against LSU—and still had a shot at beating them. Admittedly losing a really good QB like Ainge was going to hurt but this is ridiculous. Losing to Wyoming is inexusable. If they don’t “make the right hire” and turn it soon, UT will be in a rut for a long time.

You Dawg Fans really don’t get it.
You have a sub par team at best and that is what really gets under your skin. Knowing you will not compete for an SEC Championship for years to come and it eats at you every single day. You are second tier to the likes of Alabama and Florida.
You scream for your coaches to get fired knowing very well there is no other coach who would want to come here and listen to your incessant whining.
The Georgia Whine in show after each game is the laughing stock of the nation, you should record it and listen to yourselves, it really is funny. It also makes for good dawg jokes.
At least you do have a coach who doesn’t cheat even though he was brought up under the infamous Bobby “I don’t care if their felons or not” Bowden.
Stafford has not turned out to be the hero you envisioned nor will he ever be, Moreno couldn’t carry Hershel’s tennis shoes.
The one player you do have is your senior wide receiver and he’s leaving.
Knowing that after all these years with the supposed best recruiting classes year after year you still are not up to the level of the Alabama’s or Florida’s of the SEC.
The fact is you may not ever make it there, you have virtually no competition here in this state as far as recruiting and yet you still suck.
You see Tech rising to the top of their conference and it eats at your guts and makes you sick to your stomach, all that trash talk and nothing to show for it.
Then you have to live here and listen as the media markets the two real teams in the SEC as they come into your back yard and play for the right to go on to the national championship.
So go on with your whining, screaming at your coaches and demanding everyone and their brother be fired while all the rest of college football laughs at your penny ante acts.
Go Puppies.

The UT players saw their season heading into the toilet early on. In part, their reaction to CPF’s ‘retirement’ gave them an outlet for their disgust, not only in themselves, but in the direction AD Hamilton is taking the program. It must be he11 at the college level to have to go through changes that you didn’t sign up for. At least no UT player has said CPF got what he deserved, ala some dork at Clemson re: Bowden Jr…The Tennessee football team needs a mental adjustment that only they can give to each other, but I don’t see it happening for the remainder of this year…Maybe next season will be a new beginning with the right leadership wearing pads…

Sorry TB heard it all before and it doesn’t wash.
Funny how the media types are always shocked, SHOCKED when people start talking about firing obviously inept coaches like CWM. Such a joke. If we listened to the “media wisdom,” Goff and Donnan would still be here. In fact, the media is NEVER in favor of firing ANY coach at any time for any reason. They have to suck-up to coaches and can’t afford to alienate any of them. Hardly objective.
Fact: Richt doesn’t win 80 games in 8 years if CWM is his defensive coordinator the whole time.
Fact: CWM didn’t suddenly forget how to coach. He was NEVER very good. We’ve been getting embarrassed at least once a year since he’s been here. Now that BVG’s players are all gone, we’re getting embarrassed on defense EVERY WEEK!
Now the coaches are throwing the players under the bus: “we’re brilliant coaches, it’s just that our players suck.” How very classy. According to these revelations, CWM is a bad coach and a sleezeball as well.
So CWM has no responsibility to recruit better players or to improve them through 3 or 4 years of his steady coaching once they are here? If he really believes that, then I’d say that’s more disturbing than his coaching shortcomings.

But playing in Hawaii and getting beat by the Rainbow Warriors, playing in back to back bowl games in Shreveport, and in Nashville here most recently losing to Minnesota hardly constitutes being top tier in the SEC.
This year yes you guys are 1 or 1A in the SEC. But You guys have been MIA for a long time up until this year.

TB -
I am going to beg to differ with you a bit here and you set a bit of a double standard yourself …. With UGA ” it is not about attitude in the SEC” With Tennessee you say they don’t play with “heart”, which is another word for attitude.
Attitude/Heart means a lot in the SEC. The #1 Difference just ahead of a little luck.
i.e. UGA 2007 - Not a lot of heart thru loss to UT, and SC; barely squeek by Vandy and others early in the season … Not a lot of heart and attitude and we were at a low… Calling coaches out if I remember.
Then and endzone party and a blackout changed our attitudes. We real off wins against 2 quality teams (FLA & AU) and then 5 more W’s against not so tough opponents including sUGAr bowl and we are the best, hottest team in the land. Attitude changed that and we probably went into the season over ranked due to that HIGH we were on at the end of the season.
We start over this year with getting by a nuberer of weaker opponents with a little help from lady luck…. but never reached that high again, especially against the tougher sec schools. There was some FIRE vs LSU, but we could not grab it and hold it.
We went into 08 a bit over ranked with questions across both lines….but with a chance. Injuries hit us no doubt, and we are thin as thread on both sides. Winning out under these circumstances was a tough expectation from the start and I am proud of what we have accomplished BUT if we had that right attitude and swagger we don’t get our __ handed to us like we did against FLA and Bama. May not win out, but would have hung tight with both.
ATTITUDE IS KING; the difference maker in the SEC among top teer teems. FLA has it right now.

Randy - I do not think Georgia alumni and fans care if Tech rises to the top of their conference. It makes the schedule that much better for both schools.
I would not say that we “suck.” Underformed at times perhaps but “suck” is inaccurate.
If we beat Auburn then we finish third in the SEC. Obviously not where wanted to be but I would categorize that as “competing” as you say.

Perfectly said Gman.
How ironic that on the same day, the UGA coaches announce that they take no responsibility for one of the worst defenses in the SEC, there is an article lauding their former defensive coordinator BVG.
He appears to be everything CWM isn’t and never will be:
Quoted from JS column today- “He knows the game of football better than anyone I’ve ever been around,” Keith Brooking said.
“I really believe that if he could, he would get out there and fight with us,” Lawyer Milloy said.
This is why teams win football games. It’s not just because of the brilliance of a rookie quarterback, or a power running game. Teams win when players want to fight for their coach and believe they’re better because of them.
VanGorder generally has been doing this with mirrors and mid-level talent. They came into the game ranked ninth in scoring defense, with a depth chart that numbers only one real star (John Abraham).” – end quote of JS column.
If CWM were the Falcons’ coach, JS’s column would read, “CWM Martinez said today of his defense, last in the NFC South, ‘We have mostly mid-level and worse talent. Of course we suck. I, however have always been, and remain, a great coach’.”
Nobody’s buying it Tony and you should know better than trying to sell it.

I have to agree with Bull-Gator from much earlier. For the Dawgs it’s a motivation factor. They always appear to come out flat. How can you come out flat against UF?? They need to look at the last 5 games of last year and take note of the difference between the two.
To me and it’s only my opinion, it’s coaching. The talent is there.

Tony, you are absolutely WRONG. Yeah, so maybe we don’t have that Great Defensive End that we’ve always had; Or that hard-hitting safety. When has South Carolina had a better recruiting year than UGA?? And what is their Defense ranked? #3 in the Nation??!! UGA’s Defense is consistently out of position. You can see the linebackers & Safeties looking at each other on almost every play because they look lost, as if they’re not sure where they are supposed to line up. Then, with almost certainty, whether is Vandy, Kentucky or FLA inside the 20-yrd line, they will throw the ball in the end zone to a Wide-Open receiver. Almost guaranteed. Then, you’ll see the D-backs look at each other with their hands in the air like ‘I thought you were going to cover him’. Top 5 recruiting Nationally + Bottom 3 in the SEC = We need a new Defensive coordinator.

Tony, I was just saying/thinking the same thing. Georgia started rolling last year when MArcus Howard stepped up.
But here is the deal
A good DE doesn’t stop us from getting down 31 points to Alabama and even last year, we DID lose two games with MH.
My question is where are the players? Except for Asher Allen and Curran, I don’t see players as good at any position as they have had in the past. Our recruiting is fine but they aren’t being coached properly, not in scheme, but in preparation, in the mental aspect, in the physical approach, in putting them in position to succeed.

Georgia’s defense isn’t giving up these points. It is the offense and special teams.
Last week against Florida, the Gators offense punted three of their first five possesions and it should have been four of five had the spot on Tebow’s run on the 3rd down play been correct. Why it wasn’t overturned on replay is something no imparitabl observer can understand. The knee hit at the 28 and Tebow’s head was not even across the 30 when it did. UF’s second touchdown came after a terrible decision to try for an onsides kick. Three of Florida’s five touchdowns in the second half came after turnovers. Last week, UK scored three touchdowns in the second half and all three were set up by special teams problems. blocked punt, miller trying to field a punt and then mimbs shanking a punt and then the long kickoff return to the three. Martinez is doing his job. The other assistants need to step it up and the players need to be held accountable for turnvoers and trying to field a punt that was going to be a touchback. That was due to the fact the coaching staff has gone with rotating returners instead of one or two guys who do it over and over and are more comfortable and make better decisions. As Auburn’s defense will tell you, you can only do so much when the offense and special teams constantly put your backs to the wall. Georgia has young d that will get better. the line will get older and stronger and the young defensive ends are getting better. It is easy to blame the coordinator when you see a bunch of points but the bottom line is Martinez and the defense made three big series stops in UK after turnovers and got the ball back so the offense could make the big play to win the game. which is what DeMarcus Dobbs did on Saturday

Possibly the MOST entertaining potential BCS champioship game match-up is Florida v USC. THAT would be a h3lluva game.
Georgia’s problems on D are a result of injuries and a gap in recruiting - we pull the redshirt off a couple of fine D-lineman next year.
Great job for Paul Johnson - outstanding turn around and it will only get better on North Ave next year (imagine having some of HIS recruits playing).
As an SEC fan, I have to admit that the Big 12 has produced some of the most entertaining football games this year.

One of the reasons for the defense giving up increased yards , big plays, and more points is that the Georgia offense has become a quick strike offense with more long passing and less grinding out the yards on the ground. They are not taking minutes off the clock like they were because the defense is having to play more downs and they are getting tired because of it. The defense is mainly 2 players deep in most positions as the quality and experience drops off some when and if the # 3 dep players get on the field. Tired players are vulnerable.
The special teams seem to be slow of foot so UGA needs to put some additional speed on special teams and coach them up to rid themselves of stupid mistakes.
The blocked punt appeared to come from the middle of the line of scrimmage where our long snapper is just a couple of pounds over 200 and while he may can snap the ball, it is a bit unfair to ask him to block some of the big linemen and/or fast elusive backs that will come thru the middle, UGA needs to fix that now or they are going to get more punts either blocked or hurried as the opponents spot the undersized long snapper and run plays and multiple players against that position and afterall, that is the shortest distance to the punter, straight over center.

There’s little doubt Bama and Florida are playing for the NC in Atlanta. I think Florida is playing best in the SEC right now, but Bama could surprise me. In either case no Big 12 team will beat Florida, period.
USC is playing the best defense right now, but unless the Big 12 has a round of upsets leaving them all with 2 losses, the Trojans will play in the Rose Bowl of an at large bid.
The Trojans would kill any of the Big 12 teams. They match up better with Bama, then Florida, but of all the defenses in the NCAA, USC has the best chance of playing against Florida’s speed.

You know Davis had two weeks to load up on Tech. Tech went through a much harder game with FSU than people realize and in that game the number one quarterback got hurt which had some outcome on the Carolina game. I say we are very lucky to have split those two and now we have a bye week to get Nesbitt well and work with the offensive line. This time of the season a team like Tech which does not have a full complement of players on its roster gets tired not to mention freshmen and soph. starters not use to this level of competition.

Georgia’s secondary are terrible. They are slow so they play 15-20 yards off of their man and still all you see is the back of their jerseys chasing the man they are supposed to cover. It has been that way for the last two years. Linebackers are okay but are getting banged up as is the defensive line. Offensive line is young but their is improvement there. Offensively the backs and recievers are good. As far as coaching it seems like they have to take a lot of time getting plays in the players heads, as there are way too many penaltys. Georgia is not a #1 team this year, and I really doubt that they are a top ten team, more like a 11-15 team.

Anyone criticizing the dawgs defense just doesn’t get it. KY scored 38 on almost everyone they’ve played this year. The 12 TDs Uf and UA scored were someone else’s fault.
I loved the Goff years. I relished the Donnan years and I’m ecstatic about the Richt years. I was so thrilled when we managed to pull out games against USC, Vandy, and UT!! I hope we give CWM a raise cause he is a DGD!!

Tony, You’re half right…it’s the players, but they are the symptom. The root cause is the coaches. As far as I can tell, the players have to be offered a scholarship to come and play at UGA. So, why are we continuing to do a poor job of evaluating talent on the defensive side? As I mentioned in Chip’s blog, we need to stop signing these 5’9”, 4.3, pimped-up name, dred-locked, inner city defensive backs that are alledgedly five and four star recruits, when we can simply sign any from Loundes, Early, Ware, Moultrie…these guys may not run as fast, but they can play football. And they know how to wrap up the runner and tackle with their arms, not their backs. How much yardage do we give up after first contact? Of course, we still need the coaching to get them to the next level, which we’re not currently doing. Why does South Carolina always have better defenses? Peace.

OU beats TT and loses to Ok St.
TT loses OU and loses the Big 12 CCG to Mizz.
Texas loses to either Kansas or Texas AM.
USC wins out. They wouldn’t jump anyone, the teams in front of them only have to lose.
Your bias betrays you. A loss against ole Miss at home is as bad or worse than one to Oregon State in thier house. Both teams lost by 1 score.

The problem at Tennessee is the offense. Plain and simple. Its pretty said when you loose games 14-12 and 13-7. In each of those games, the offense game up a TO for a TD (fumble against Auburn, int against Wyoming).

Tony, its not the “2” that has the Bulldog Nation upset, it is who the “2” are. Georgia used to think the only thing standing between them and a national championship was Florida. Now there stands a Saban-led Tide as well. The road to Bulldog glory just got a whole lot tougher.

Bear Bryant said it over 20 years ago, Offence sells tickets, defense wins championships.

Good Lord! People are actually spending time mapping out USC’s path to the MNC game? Because they are a good team in a poor conference they can appear statistically better than they are.
If you actually watch them for 60 minutes I doubt you’ll be so convinced. Unless, of course, you are an alum. At least then your delusion is understandable.

God knows, I have tried (Next#13).
That said, Alabama wins the National Championship. Reason: great defense always beats great offence. Gators/Texas Tech, great offence. Alabama, great defense. Bear was right.

Georgia’s problems are summed up with three words: Line of Scrimmage. They do not have the beef on the DL, and the OL is simply too young. We will lose to Auburn or Tech, possibly both (but unlikely). I suspect you will see a monster of a team in 2009, even if Moreno leaves (likely). I think Staff returns for a stellar senior season. If he does, UGA wins the SEC East and beats UF. Despite these inadequacies, UGA is still 8-2 this season! That is amazing.

The Coaches and Harris have the mongrels #12, BS computer bumps them to #10. The human polls need to drop them a couple spots to put them were they belong. No team that gets blown out by 30+ should ever see a BCS bowl.

TB. When it comes to talkin heads, you are certainly one of my favorites. However, I could not disagree more. How often in sports do we see a team fire a coach, then the next guy comes in an wins with those same players. Instead of UGA lets look at LSU. Everyone knows there is talent on that D. My only question is who’s coaching them? Would you say they are also void of talent? No and neither is UGA. Butch Davis or Saban would make either unit dominant. An average coach would get dominated.

HEY TONY** HEY TONY****
I LIKE YOU BUT YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN AS WRONG!!! GA HAS NO TALENT ON DEFENSE?? WITH 9 RETURNING STARTERS & ONLY LOST ONE TO THE NFL IN HOWARD & LOST OWENS TO INJURY HOW CAN YOU SAY ITS TALENT??? IN CASE YOU DONT REMEMBER, THIS IS THE SAME DAMN DEFENSE THAT FINISHED IN THE TOP 10 IN ABOUT EVERY CATEGORY LAST YEAR! SO MY QUESTION TO YOU IS , HOW DO YOU GO FROM THAT LAST YEAR TO THIS THIS YEAR?? THE PLAYERS DID”NT GET THAT BAD OVER THE SUMMER! THE PROBLEM IS MARTINEZ WHETHER YOU WANT TO BELIEVE IT OR NOT! EXPLAIN THIS, WHEN GA PLAYS A TEAM THAT HAS A TERRIBLE QB THAT CANT STRETCH THE FIELD & ALL HIS THROWS ARE WITHIN 10 -15 YDS, WHY ARE GA”S CORNERS & SAFETIES PLAYING OFF 15-20 YDS??? CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG BUT DONT YOU PLAY PRESS COVERAGE AT THE LINE INSTEAD OF PLAYING THIS FAR OFF & LET THEM PICK UP 3rd & 5-8 EVERY TIME BY PLAYING PITCH & CATCH??? HELL IN THE BAMA GAME THIS IS WHAT BEAT THEM!!! THE ADJUSTMENTS WERE FINALLY MADE AT HALFTIME BUT IT WAS TO LATE!! THE PROBLEM WITH MARTINEZ IS HE CANT MAKE THE ADJUSTMENTS QUICK ENOUGH!!! HE HAS TO GO IF WE WANT TO BE THE OLD GA DEFENSES IN THE PAST!! GO DAWGS!

to bamaguy: Your statment is half true regarding Gators/Texas Tech defenses. It’s apparent you haven’t observed the Gator defense in action. I suspect you haven’t watched one quarter of a Gator game this season. I’m certain you’ll be watching the SEC Championship game. If you do, you will see a great college defense in action and I don’t mean the Tide. Score prediction: FLA 38, ALA 21

USC v. FLA could happen and even without the National Title on the line (which is probably a more likely scenario) it would still be the best game of the bowl season. Believe me, I am no fan of either school but they are playing lights-out right now. I can’t remember which columnist had the stats, but USC has some gaudy numbers.
IMO, the Tide is the most balanced team and is strongest where it counts - on the lines. If John Parker Wilson (the worst QB in the SEC) can continue to not screw-up, they will run the table.
I think that injuries have hurt the Dawgs on D more than people think. Why don’t we try out a couple of our 65 sub-par receivers at corner? At least we could get some height at the position and wouldn’t have to be pi$sed about dropped passes.

What does TB know?
Georgia Number One - NOT
Moreno for the Heisman - NOT
And have you seen his season picks on Talkin’ Football? He’s behind that college football expert Bob Neal - NOT
What a UGAG homer. The AJC should hire Tee Martin as a featured columnist. At least he tells you he’s a TENN homer.

We have above average recruits. We have below average players.
That sounds a lot like below average coaching!
