The Fearless Friday Forecast

I’ve often told people that if they are dumb enough to bet money on college football, they pretty much deserve what they get. The game is too unpredictable now. In most games, especially this time of year, winning and losing comes down to 2 or 3 plays in a game. Take my picks, for instance. Here is how what looked to be a 9-1 week quickly turned into 4-6. The ACC is the most unpredictable conference in football. I’ve got the scars to prove it. I went 0-4 in the ACC last week and all four of the games looked like they were going the other way until the final moments:

Florida State was going in for the winning touchdown inside the final minute when Georgia Tech safety Cooper Taylor knocked the ball loose from Marcus Sims in the end zone to give the Yellow Jackets a 31-28 victory.

Duke missed a 41-yard field goal in the final seconds of regulation and lost in OT to Wake Forest, 33-30.

Virginia was in control against Miami but the Hurricanes took advantage of two late turnovers to win 24-17 in overtime.

Playing at home, Boston College fought back from a 17-0 deficit to take a 21-17 lead with 8:43 left. But the Tigers rallied to beat the Eagles for the first time in 50 years, 27-17.

Those four games combined with the pick of Texas over Texas Tech, which scored with one second left to win, plus the oh-so-wrong pick of Georgia over Florida is how a potentially good weekend goes into the ditch.

That gives us a 62-38 record on the year with the hope that when it comes to picking games, your humble servant will have a November to remember. But don’t bet the ranch, or anything else, on it.

Here, my friends, is another Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Georgia Tech (7-2) at North Carolina (6-2): Georgia Tech suffered a huge loss in left tackle Andrew Gardner, which means the offensive line has to be reshuffled to go against a pretty athletic North Carolina defense. This will be a very good game but North Carolina, which finds ways to make teams throw (17 interceptions), will nip Georgia Tech at the end. North Carolina 17, Georgia Tech 14.

2. Georgia (7-2) at Kentucky (6-3): Getting Georgia up to play this game after last week’s beat down by the Gators is going to be a tough task for Mark Richt and his staff. If Kentucky were a little bit better on offense, I’d be tempted to pick the Wildcats in an upset because the UK defense is pretty good. Georgia’s skill level gets them through a very tough game. Georgia 20, Kentucky 14.

3. Alabama (9-0) at LSU (6-2): LSU can’t defend its national championship but the Tigers can damage Nick Saban’s chances of winning one with an upset win in Baton Rouge. Alabama’s plan is simple. Use the nation’s No. 2 rushing defense to slow down RB Charles Scott, believing that redshirt freshman QB Jarrett Lee is not good enough to win the game. This will be one of the most physical football games you’ll see this season. And when it comes to a street fight, I like the Crimson Tide. Alabama 21, LSU 17.

4. Florida (7-1) at Vanderbilt (5-3): Both of Florida’s national championship teams, 1996 and 2006, had to fight just to get out of Vanderbilt with a win. The Gators are coming off their best performance of the year against Florida and there is a tendency to let down. But with one loss, No. 5 Florida knows it has to keep winning big to stay in the BCS race. The Gators just have too much speed. Florida 35, Vanderbilt 10.

5. Arkansas (4-5) at South Carolina (6-3): Don’t look now but the Head Ball Coach at South Carolina is putting together a pretty good season after an 0-2 start in the SEC. If QB Stephen Garcia (ankle) was completely healthy, the Gamecocks would be more comfortable about this game. South Carolina wins because of the nation’s No. 3 defense (250.67 ypg). South Carolina 17, Arkansas 13.

6. Clemson (4-4) at Florida State (6-2): It’s Bowden Bowl X but one of the Bowdens, Tommy, has already taken Clemson’s money and gone to the beach. With Maryland’s loss to Virginia Tech last night, Florida State can win the ACC Atlantic by running the table against Clemson, Boston College, and Maryland plus one more loss by Wake Forest. Saturday will also be Bobby Bowden’s 79th birthday. Florida State 31, Clemson 17.

7. Virginia (5-4) at Wake Forest (5-3): This is an ACC elimination game. Wake Forest (3-2 ACC) has to keep winning to stay alive in the ACC Atlantic. Virginia (2-2) is in the same boat in the Coastal. Virginia is pretty scary with that big offensive line and running back Cedric Peerman. But Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has been working on his running game for just such an occasion. This will be a very good football game. Wake Forest 17, Virginia 13.

8. Cincinnati (6-2) at West Virginia (6-2): Since a 1-2 start West Virginia has reeled off five straight wins and is all alone atop the Big East standings. Last week the Mountaineers eliminated Connecticut (35-13) and this week they get a chance to hand the Bearcats their second conference loss. As long as QB Pat White is vertical, go with the Mountaineers. West Virginia 31, Cincinnati 17.

9. Penn State (9-0) at Iowa (5-4): People keep wondering if Penn State is going to stumble somewhere along the way. This trip to Iowa City may not be easy because the Hawkeyes are on a three-game winning streak. Penn State has more speed and more athleticism and they have Joe Pa, who seems to be having a charmed season. That, and the return of QB Darryl Clark (concussion), should be enough for the Nittany Lions to win. Penn State 28, Iowa 13.

10. Oklahoma State (8-1) at Texas Tech (9-0): The No. 2 Red Raiders won the biggest game in their history last week against No. 1 Texas. They will have to play even better to beat the Cowboys Saturday night in Lubbock. Oklahoma State’s running game (273.56 ypg) is the fifth-best in the nation and the Cowboys will use it to keep the ball away from QB Graham Harrell and WR Michael Crabtree. Oklahoma State also has a great passing combo in QB Zac Robinson and WR Dez Bryant (60 catches, 1,054 yards). Part of me wants to pick the upset but I can’t go against the Red Raiders in Lubbock. Texas Tech 31, Oklahoma State 27.

One problem with the Richt/Bowden comparison. Richt has two conference titles and 3 BCS Bowl appearances. Not to mention he has more double digit win seasons than not. Does Tommy Bowden even have one 10 or more win season? Bowden never got his team to the ACC Title game or a BCS Bowl in an inferior conference.

Tony - You went 0-4 last week with your ACC picks because you are such a Flaming SEC and UGA “Homer”. You seem not to follow any conference other than the SEC. Just note that the SEC is 0-1 versus the Big 12 and 3-3 versus the ACC this year. The Big 12 is the best conference in college football and the ACC is pushing the “mighty” SEC for Number 2.

Tony, your picks don’t look too bad this week. However I disagree on two of the games. First, I think you’re giving LSU too much credit (or maybe not giving Bama enough). That predicted score is way too close. I see Bama winning by at least 14 with one touchdown being credited to the Bama defense. I also think Georgia is in a spiral they won’t get out of. I see Kentucky beating the Dawgs with a field goal in the last few seconds of the game. I agree with your pick in the Texas Tech game…but your score is WAY too low. Each team will probably score in the 40’s. Here’s hoping it’s as exciting as last week (although I’m pulling for Oklahoma State).

I understand all the dog fans picking uga to beat florida last week, but what I just can’t understand is why all you sports editors were pikcing uga! Everyone in the country knew that Florida has been playing elite ball for the past few weeks and could handle uga. Why not you? Sports is supposed to be your job! Are you merely just trying to sell more papers by picking the popular team? If so, that would explain why you all continuosly pick against Tech (to make the majority of the state of Georgia residents happy - dog fans). I’m not predicting a Tech win this week either, I’m not going to predict anything. I’m just noticing a confusing trend. Right now Georgia Tech is the only team that has shown it can get up for a big game. I really don’t want to be a jerk, I would just like to know!

By THWUGA

November 7, 2008 9:27 AM | Link to this

There you go again, Tony. Just keep picking against Tech and for Georgia until you get it right. Wonder why your rag has the largest circulation decline of ALL top-25 newspapers in the US? It’s the sports section and the paper’s political leanings. For Christ’s sake… the AJC is the only paper in Atlanta! There’s no competition in one of the largest metro areas!

Your statements simply don’t make sense. Did you see how Claytor and Barrick performed against FSU last week? Did you even watch the game? They played very, very well.

And yes, UNC has tons of interceptions. They have 17 (#1 in the nation) to Tech’s 15 (#4 in the nation). But shhh… I’m going to let you in on a little secret… Tech rarely throws the ball*. And Tech has more overall takeaways than UNC does!

Tony, you’re awful. I’d rather read T-Moore.

By Calvin

November 7, 2008 9:35 AM | Link to this

Reading his picks can be interesting, but if Mr. Barnhart thinks his record means anything or matters to anyone, it doesn’t. He’s really banking on the loss of Gardner to be Tech’s ruination, but it often happens that players who have to step in, also step up. That’s why we love college football, isn’t it?

OK Folks, leaves are falling all around it’s time I was on my way to Chapel Hill. Thanks to you I’m much obliged to kick some tar-heel butt.

Tony you are 0-4 in the ACC because you know nothing about the ACC. You like the rest of these morons at the AJC only cover the SEC. That’s why you pick FSU every chance you get, it’s the fashion pick

anyway, RAMBLE ON!!! doesn’t hold any grudges, just trying to help you do your job better.

Here’s the deal with the GT UNC game, which I’ll heading up 85N soon to watch for myself. It will be one of the most exciting games of the NCAA season, like the UF vs. UGA game (Ha, just kidding). Lot’s of offense, 31-28 is the final score, I don’t know who is going to win though. I’m just praying it’s the jackets.

UGAG vs. KY, it’s a no win game for the fleabags, even if they win. I’m saying, the mutts are still sucking their thumbs and get beat. 24 to 21. oh yea!!!!

…and nows the time, the time is now. A-keep-a rambling baby!!!!!

Big Tone,

I’m not as hyped as I was this time last week and neither are my dawgs. I predict a 20-17 loss on a last second field goal and I also predict atleast 2 missed 3-pointers by our kicker, a ton of penalties and several dropped passes to boot. Let’s not forget some horrid play calling in the red zone! The game will be an ugly one no doubt. Just like last week.

I like the rest of your pics however and wouldn’t worry much about your ACC record last week. Most of the college football world doesn’t even remember those games anyways.

I agree as well that evil genious has put together a good season and will probably win 9 or 10 games, which will put him into the USC hall of fame one day. And next year they will be ranked second behind the Gators in the SEC East to start next season.

Richt is attempting to become only the sixth head coach who has won 80 or more NCAA Division I football games in his first eight seasons. His victories in that span include two SEC Championships and 26 wins over ranked teams. Georgia has attended a bowl game every season since Richt took over as head coach and the team’s current streak of post-season appearances stands at 11, breaking the former school record set from 1980-89. Last year against Kentucky, Richt picked up his 70th win with the Bulldogs in seven seasons.

Here are this weeks completely fallible predictions——

(1) For the ACC, this is about as interesting as it’s going to get in 2008. North Carolina and Georgia Tech are two vastly improved teams, both of which are exceeding expectations for the present season. The Yellow Jackets have an offensive system that everyone is seeing for the first time (note to Dawgs: better bring your A game this year), and the Tarheels are playing fundamentally sound football on both sides of the ball. No prediction——but I am going to watch this one because I think we are looking at the future of the ACC.

(2) The Georgia-Kentucky game will determine the rest of the Dawgs’ season. The Dawgs either get angry, show some character and shake off the loss to Florida, or this team will be forgotten. My bet is on the former——Dawgs bite Cats by 21.

(3) LSU always plays Alabama like there’s no tomorrow. This year will not be an exception. While this game has upset potential, I predict the Tide over Tigers by 10.

(4) Vandy’s got a solid defense and a respectable offense, but speed kills. Gators over Dores by 28.

(5) Arkansas is showing signs of life on offense, but South Carolina is winning with a stout defense. Gamecocks over Hogs by 10. The Evil Genius still hopes to coach long enough to win games with overwhelming offense. It could happen. One day.

(6) Sadly, there will never be another Bowden Bowl. Florida State is still shaky, but the wheels have come off at Clemson. Seminoles over Tigers by 21.

(7) ACC whacky upset of the week: Virginia beats Wake Forest by 7. Why? Well, why not? UVa wins when you expect them to lose, and loses win they’re predicted to win. Some logic, huh?

(8) I haven’t watched ether of these teams all season. I plead ignorance——no pick.

(9) Penn State wins by 17, but this game does nothing for the Nittany Lions’ argument to get a BCS title bid, and only hurts their perceived strength of schedule.

(10) Can Texas Tech sustain their Cinderella title run? We shall see, but I doubt it. If Oklahoma State doesn’t get them, Oklahoma will. Red Raiders over Cowboys by 10.

Good luck to all the teams for whom you cheer, and may the best teams win (they usually do).

Sadly I think Tech will get nipped by Carolina, but not because of a lineman, but Carolina has always had Tech’s number. In 1990 they blimished a perfect season with a tie. The games are always close and Tech wins their share. This would be a real test of CPJ. If he can handle these guys and he needs to for future reference, then Tech has arrived. There are two new sheriffs forming posses in the ACC, Davis and CPJ, any advantage early by either one will go a long way.

Based on the team’s not showing up against AL or UF, and previously getting smoked (again, failing to show up) by UT in consecutive years, I will continue to say that UGA is the new Clemson and Mark Richt is Tommy Bowden in red and black until UGA wins (or even plays close) against a GOOD team, and until Richt wins that NC with the talent he has he will always be an underachiever a la Bowden!

You seem to have left out that Tech was driving to put the game out of reach (31-20 at the time) and Nesbitt got hurt. At the least a FG on that drive (1st down on the FSU 42) makes the game a two TD game and a TD empties the stadium. So…are you saying you forecast that too???? But you are correct that blind luck is often as accurate (see AJC reporting) as truly in depth knowledge of the teams.

This just in…..Patriots are declared national champions since NY Giants didn’t get #1 or 2 in final polls…back to college football. The beat down against the gators hurt but we are still going to beat KY, Auburn, and nerds from north ave for 8th straight year. This blog has been infested with Gumps all week, which has required me to do a good deal more administrative work than I would prefer in the comment section. I find them coarse and vulgar, as befitting their poor breeding and ramshackle surroundings, but I digress. In any event, it seems clear to me that though they are planning statues to Nick Saban (he’ll likely be gone long before they could ever finish one) and running their mouths at high speed, the Gumps seem to be attempting to convince themselves they can beat LSU. I don’t know exactly what it is, but they sound a little more shrill than usual.

I really don’t know why they should come off as nervous; after all, LSU has a freshman quarterback who throws a lot of interceptions and Alabama is impregnable on both lines of scrimmage. The Tigers haven’t played their best football yet this season and seem to be suffering a hangover from their national championship last year. Why would there be so much trash-talking this week?

If you don’t take my meaning, check out the comments below Jim Kleinpeter’s entry on Nick Saban in the Times-Picayune’s LSU blog. You’ll see a host of chatterboxes offering up crimson pablum to please themselves, and it just doesn’t have the ring of real confidence to it. I assure you this is going on all over the place, and I find it both instructive and puzzling.

Maybe the Bama people know that this year is their best shot at besting LSU. After all, the Tigers have a monster of a team coming back next year, while Alabama is likely to lose John Parker Wilson, for whom they will have no replacement ready to play, plus Andre Smith and Terrance Cody (in all likelihood) along the line of scrimmage (which incidentally will be a a huge factor in determining who wins Saturday). Those losses will likely create an identity problem for Alabama just as big as the one LSU has this year - and let’s face it, after 2009 there’s no reason to think Nick Saban will be at Alabama if he even stays that long. They might be back to hiring retread former players like they usually have, particularly since Paul Bryant, Jr. has broken his bank trying to pay Saban’s salary and won’t be able to foot the bill for another massive contract.

In other words, LSU fans can absorb whatever results tomorrow might bring in perfect confidence of long-term dominance over the SEC West - and as such we’ll be enjoying a beautiful day at Tiger Stadium with the knowledge that our program is in excellent hands and will achieve ultimate triumph. And who knows? Maybe Alabama will suffer the all-too-common fate of teams ranked atop the polls in the regular season.

Now that would be truly devastating to the Gump faithful. To know that having Nick Saban and a No. 1 ranking isn’t enough to avoid defeat at LSU’s hands? They might never recover. The phone lines would be buzzing at 3 a.m. Sunday morning, and there might be a run on bricks.

Frightening.

Good to see the Bama’s and LSUers going at each other. Call us irrelevant and leave us alone for the rest of the year.

Well thanks. The one who posted the fake gay stuff, he is just mad b/c I am f—king around with his girlfriend.

My keys to and LSU victory are to get pressure on Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson and control the lines on both O and D. gumps have really on been very impressive for one half against UGA.

Here is my response to all you gumppers who say “But bama dismantled clempson”. Who hasn’t beat clempson. hell even Tech beat them. The other games have been pretty unimpressive.

A UGA fan saying Alabama is the most overrated team in the nation? Pardon me for a second, while I laugh uncontrollably.

Everyone knows, that distinction, belongs to UGA. But what’s more, is that it was predictable. UGA is a gymnastics school, and it always has been - so when you think you have the goods to rise up in football, you always fail and get humiliated on the big stage, on national television, right in front of your own hick fans. You remember 31-0 at the half right? Luckily for you, Coach Saban allowed our backups to come in or it’d have been worse, to the tune of 41-17. It was the best funeral I’ve ever been to.

And I don’t even need to mention the whipping the Gators put on you, since it’s so fresh on your minds. Face it, UGA is forever Florida’s little brother, and compared with Alabama, you’re nobody and don’t register on our radar.

You poodles really should concentrate on gymnastics - hey, maybe Richt can pull out some all pink unis next? Because after Bama stepped on your necks with a hobnailed boot, I bet we won’t be seeing a blackout for a while.

Saban OWNS you! ROLL TIDE!

gdawginkalamazoo….

I think the key to this game is wearing camo, drinking a bottle of bourbon, dressing up like comic book characters(brandon loves that btw),blasting rap music at our tailgate, screaming tiger bait at bama fans, throw batteries at saban and bama, make a bunch of funny signs at gameday putting down saban, wear purple, and…..well, just be redneck loser mullet sporting camo wearing lsu fans and everything should be cool.

Dear Ditch-digging Coonasses,

If you think your vitriol and hate is going to scare the Tide and Coach Saban, you’re sadly mistaken. Coach Saban made you what you are today, and he’s going to take it all away too.

I think you all are just so bitter because you realize how your little run of good luck is over now that Saban is back. You realize how important he was for you, and now you’re all scared.

So please, yell, scream, throw stuff, perpetuate the reality that Louisiana is comprised of bayou, coonass, trash that lives in a bunch of wooden huts constructed in a swamp. We want you to, PLEASE, please make Coach Saban and the #1 ranked Tide feel like it’s them against the whole world - we like it like that. We’re road warriors coonasses, and we’re taking back Bryant-Denny South in less than 24 hours!

Peace Corndogs!

To the real Geaux Tigers thanks for the answer. I think you guys probably have the best line to line match for Bama on both sides of the ball. Battle in the trenches. Got keep your QB protected so he doesn’t make any mistakes. UGA didn’t get to JPW with enough pressure. Bama can start fast.

Hey Geaux Tigers…..

Sounds like I am in your head. I can see you in your trailer punching your 300 lb wife out b/ I am making you so angry. Am I getting under your skin that bad???

If you think this is bad just wait till Saban punks Leslie Miles tomorrow on national television. I feel for your wife…and the local Krystals when she comes thru the drive thru.

Hey Michael….nice job putting the pups to bed. Guess we will have to wait till Gymnastics season till they come back. I hear they are having a pink out for Bama this year…. SOULJA BOY PUPPIES……

Do you really own me. Really you think you can get in my head with gay jokes and saying LSU fans are all camo wearing mullet sporting drunks.

There is no part of what you are saying that is not true for AlaGump. Keep it coming. I would much rather be know for wearing camo, mullets, and bourbon than for screwing my sister.

And Micheal

Sure didn’t bother us last year with saban on your sideline.

Michael, why all the hate? I hope it is one hell of a game tomorrow. I don’t really care who wins because I like both programs and most of the fans from both programs. But after your last few post I might have to pull for LSU. You can win and be gracious and appreciative about it or you can be an a$$? I see you have chosen the latter. There a few classy fans on here from some of our biggest rivals, Atlanta Gator, General Neyland, etc who can talk football w/o the trash. Sure we had our asses handed to us twice this year but there is still a lot of football left to play for all the teams involved.

Michael-Actually UGA has beaten a Saban coached team 2 out of the last 3 times they played each other. Hardly think that is “owning” UGA. But that goes hand in hand with one of our fans saying Alabama was over rated which is not true.

Funny how stupid comments breed stupid comments.

And funny how you guys finally found a good coach….seeing how your program was doggie paddling in mediocracy for so many years prior to his arrival…..what with the back to back Shreveport visits….the Nashville visit befroe then….and the “vacation Bowl” in Hawaii where those mighty Rainbow Warriors got a hold of you guys.

As a matter of fact you guys got us good this year….1 out of the last 4 aint to bad!

Just a little good ribbing from your friendly UGAY..as you guys like to say….UGAY FAN.

I swear, sometimes it just seems like everyone hates on Ga Tech. We come out of nowhere, absolutely nowhere to have a good season, and what does the AJC do? That’s right, they hate on Ga Tech. The school that brings this state money from research and everything else. It feels like Ga Tech vs. the whole state of Georgia. When we ever beat the Dawgs, it will be huge, the best thing to ever happen to us. The AJC can keep hating on us all they want, but Ga Tech will persevere soon whether or not the AJC cares about us. Stupid writers!

Dawgs and Gators win - they have way too much talent for their opponents. So far Georgia beats the teams they are supposed to beat this year.

Steve Spurrier’s main accomplishment in Columbia is hiring two very good defensive coordinators (Richt should take a page from that). That’s it - his vaunted offense has been a bust and exposed as an outdated relic of the 1990s. The rumors about him and Tenn. were amusing - what has he done at SC to make Tennessee want him now? The Evil Genius is washed-up, just like his old (and much classier) nemesis Bobby Bowden. The difference is that Bowden was on top a lot longer. I like Arkansas in an upset. Expect the South Carolina faithful to start howling after that.

Dangerous game for Texas Tech. Oklahoma State has a recent history of beating them, and a punishing running game is just the offensive style that should give them problems. But Okie State cannot pressure the QB, which is big trouble against TTU. I like Texas Tech 33-31 on a late field goal.

The only game on your list that really matters is the LSU vs Bama Game.

I picked Texas Tech in the upset of the week last week. I also picked ALL FOUR of the ACC winners.

Upset of the week;

LSU over BAMA.

Miles can’t afford to lose this one and his players know it. As it turns out, Bama has not been tested against a very good team. LSU will play like Pros this weekend and beat The Tide. This should be a great game to watch.

People aren’t wondering if PENN STATE is going to stumble, they are HOPING they do. Everyone in the SEC and the Big(no defense) 12, forget that PENN STATE has defeated the perceieved faster and more athletic teams from their conferences the last 2 years in bowl games. IMHO the last team the fans of these 2 conferences want to meet in a bowl is PSU.

GT keeps bringing up the 1990 game vs UNC. He is correct it was a tie but GT had 450 total yards to 150 for UNC that day. The only reason it was a tie was because GT turned the ball over 5 times. UNC did nothing to ‘have our number’ that day - we just played a bad game. I actually think the 2nd half of the FSU game was awful and Tech is not resting on their laurels. Coach will have them ready. Whoever does lose will have 3 ACC losses and be out of the race this year for sure. Even if GT wins vs UNC and Miami, I still assume either VT or UVA will go to the Championship game but that is ok.

Well, I picked LSU in an upset over Bama and I wasn’t far off.

An OT win is still a win though and despite sloppy play on both sides, congrats to Bama on the win and staying undefeated.

I hope you Bama Boys stick it to The Gators in The SECC Game.

To all of you coona$$, corndog gump haters — Roll Tide!

‘Nuff said…

If he keeps his nose clean and his grades up at Jax State, we might let Ryan Perilloux QB for the Tide next year. He’s used to wearing red now.

Hey truecrimson, I am from the great state of LA. and i have said nothing but good things about you Bama fans. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. Pray you don’t win it all this year cause saban will give you at best 2 more years then you guys will be crying all over again win we stomp your butts for 5 more straight years. GO BACK TO YOUR DOUBLE WIDE AND SHUT YOUR MOUTH. You won and really when all is said and done that is about the best you can say. I would love to see how you handle FL.

mike the tiger,

If what you say is true, then my post obviously wasn’t directed at you.

Saban will probably retire at Alabama. Why would he leave?

You will get to see how Bama handles Florida in a few weeks.

Oh yeah, don’t be so jealous of my double-wide. ;-)
