Five burning questions about Georgia-Florida

As we head out of town towards Jacksonville, here are five burning questions about Saturday’s Georgia-Florida game. What are yours?

1. Will Georgia kick the ball to Brandon James?: Invariably a game as big as this one will come down to turnovers and a big play/mistake in the kicking game. I know that Georgia has an outstanding punter in Brian Mimbs (43.8 avg.) so the temptation is to let him boom kicks all over the place. But if Florida’s Brandon James touches the ball four or five times on punts he is probably going to take one to the house. He already has punt returns of 74 yards (against Hawaii) and 78 yards (against Tennessee) for touchdowns. He is averaging 20.2 yards on punt returns and 28.8 yards on kickoff returns. This guy can change the face of an entire game in just a few seconds. In case you’re keeping score at home, Georgia has not given up a punt return for a touchdown since 2001 (Marvin Jackson of Arkansas), Mark Richt’s first year as head coach. Georgia leads the SEC in net punting (38.4 ypr) which means the Bulldogs cover well.

2. How much does a healthy Tim Tebow mean to Florida?: Tebow was really banged up (non-throwing shoulder) for last year’s game with the Bulldogs and, because so much of the offense went through him, the Gators struggled. Tebow, who carried the ball 210 times last season, has only run the ball 82 times in seven games this season. But Tebow has used his break from running the ball to become a pretty efficient passer. He has completed 63.4 percent of his passes, which is the best among starting quarterbacks in the SEC. He has thrown only two interceptions (and 12 touchdowns) in 164 passing attempts. Georgia has to get some pressure on Tebow and make him uncomfortable and out of his rhythm while throwing the football. The teams that have had success against Florida the past two seasons have tended to be very physical with Tebow.

3. Will Georgia keep a watchful eye on Jeff Demps and Florida’s “block party?” It’s pretty obvious what Demps, the true freshman, can do when he gets his hands on the ball. He only has 30 carries on the season but has averaged 11.9 yards per carry. Despite carrying the ball only 30 times, he is in the SEC’s Top 10 for rushing yards per game (51.0 avg.) The average length on his four touchdown runs is 47 yards. But he is also very dangerous as the outside rusher on the punt block team. Demps blocked a punt against Kentucky, his second this season. Florida blocked a total of three kicks (2 punts, one FG) against the Wildcats. Georgia’s Mimbs has had only one punt blocked in the past two years, that coming against Tennessee in 2007.

4. Will Knowshon Moreno rush for over 100 yards?: If he does, the odds say that Georgia will win. Moreno has posted 10 games over 100 yards or more at Georgia and the Bulldogs are 10-0 in those games. Florida is third in the SEC in rushing defense (behind Alabama and Georgia) giving up 102.7 yards per game and 3.4 yards per attempt. Only one back (Michael Smith of Arkansas) has rushed for over 100 yards against the Florida defense this season. Only three of Florida’s seven opponents have rushed for over 100 yards: Ole Miss (163), Arkansas (144), Kentucky (141). Another note on Moreno: Only one back in Georgia history (Herschel Walker) has rushed for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. With 76 yards on Saturday Moreno will become the second.

5. Who will commit the fewest penalties?: Georgia still has the dubious honor of leading the nation in penalties per game with an average of 9.5 (76 penalties in eight games). But Florida is not far behind as the Gators have committed 57 penalties in seven games (8.14 average). The number of penalties is important in this respect: If you’re committing almost 10 penalties a game, chances are one is going to be called at a crucial moment that wipes out a big play on offense or defense. After last season’s end zone celebration by Georgia, the SEC officials will be calling it pretty tight early on in an effort to keep control of the game. Expect the officials to call some ticky-tack stuff, especially in the first half. The team that can adjust to the officials will have a distinct advantage.

Good luck to the dawgs and did not kick to Brandon James. I think the dawgs will run the ball on the gators, but can the dawgs defense stop the gators fast offense? Answer NO!! GATORS WIN 45-41!!

Moreno will be the key to the offensive game. If he gashes that FL D-line like he did with LSU, its going to be a long day for Jort-Nation. Defensive Key: Keep a man on Harvin, and get after Tebow on every play! Dawgs Win!

stunning commentary bigdawg01. you should get on the phone with richt with your astute game plan. ive heard their defensive plan was to not cover harvin at all and to have the linemen just sit down after the snap to let tebow throw. have you ever thought of a career in coaching? keep up the good work.

I think each offense will have good spots. The ? is how many can Willie M. and crew stop? More importantly Willie M., in the past, has had good/great plans and some very poor. His bad ones are BAD and he can’t adjust until half time. Why can he not adjust in the 2nd and 4 quarters. Many games he is the weak link.

ramdawg….lose you bitterness over the butt whipping you guys took from UA. I guess when you teams gets dismantled by Alabama you have to make reference to beating another team huh? Yes we have lost to AU 6 years in a row but our last 18 year record against AU is not nearly as embarrassing as UGA’s against UF. Newsflash for you…THIS IS A BLOG AND IS FOR EXPRESSING OPINIONS. No where did I read it was only for UGA fans opinions! So mine is this….If a team like UGA cant beat a team that has lost to Auburn 6 years in a row, there is no way they beat the Gators. UF might actually challenge us and force us to play hard for 4 quarters instead of just 2!! And…before you go off on UGA in the 2nd half, yes you guys played better but when we needed points to put it away, we scored with ease!

Who gives a rats arse about this overblown Arena/sec league game. The sec is so overrated it is comical. No scoring defense whatsoever…the over and under on this game is probably 100 points or more. There will be a big redneck crowd there but you probably couldn’t find a full set of teeth if you tried. On the other hand, there is a BIG game in Atlanta between two very good teams playing to make their conference championship game. And there will actually be defense in this game. For you to play up the Arena/sec game and play down the big ACC game is just plain STUPID. Tony, you have become such a sec home-gomer that you have lost all perspective..if you ever had any. Moreno rushes for 120 yds, scores twice. Stafford throws for 200 yds and 2 TD’s, one pick. Demps, Rainey, Moore, Harvin rush for 225 yds total, score 4 times. Tebow throws for 150 yds, 2 TD’s, no picks, rushes for 1 TD. Final score: GA 31, FLA 48. Give or take a field goal or two either way.

ramdawg….believe what you want about me but I will tell you this…I saw first hand Alabama whip UGA during your so called blackout. You can think that your dogs thought we would be that same BAMA team as last year and if so, SHAME ON YOUR COACHING STAFF for not having them ready to play. Maybe Richt should have an impromptu endzone celebration when you guys finally score in the 2nd half.

In addition, some of your comments you make are exactly what UGA fans do as well. Crowing….I seem to remember Atlanta being unbearable to live in before this season started. I also remember it being worse the week of the BAMA game because every got such a woodie about the ridiculouos blackout. I seem to remember very few UGA fans even giving BAMA a chance in that game. Humility….Did you guys struggle with South Carolina and not have the most impressive performances against UT and Vandy. Dont I also recall UGA giving up 21 points to GA Southern? Yet, I see a UGA fan on here claiming the winner of this game as the best team in the nation. Tell me about humility??

As I said, there will be no rematch because 2 losses wont be enough to get UGA to the Dome. If they do, well, BAMA goes 3-0 in the state of GA this year!!

If the game is as nasty as the blog wars there’ll be lots of penalties and injuries. Our o-line has to continue making incremental jumps even in Jacksonville —a hard place for a young player to improve his game. Our receivers have to catch everything thrown near them. And our defense has to play the best game they’ve played this year.If we give Tebow time Florida wins. Thanks for the consecutive thousand yard rushing stat. Somehow I’d missed that before. It’s hard to beat Florida twice in a row or Auburn 3x in a row without a tailback named Hershel. Hopefully it happens this year. But EVERYTHNG will have to fall into place.Go Dawgs!!!

To be quite honest, I haven’t really seen Florida play much in the past few games so I don’t know much about this Demps and Rainey tandem. Nevertheless, I am skeptical about a set of backs that do not exceed 180 lbs. each. That’s not small. That’s freaking microscopic. I don’t care how fast they are. If anybody got a clean hit on these dudes it would be all over. Lights out. Good night and sleep tight. I understand that’s the tricky part. I understand that they are elusive and Florida probably blocks well for them, but geez this is SEC football. I just don’t know about that. If Georgia starts popping these guys in the mouth I bet they won’t be so fast anymore. And I do not believe that Florida has faced a defense that can run as well as Georgia’s yet. Just something to think about. I make no predictions.

Big Tone,

Enjoyed the blog! Now it’s time to get serious. I feel like Chris Mathews a tad, I’m getting a tingly feeling going down my leg.(For the Dawgs obviously and NOT Obama)?

Anywasys, I have watched a good bit of ESPN this week and it has amazed me how all of the talking heads are picking an easy UF win and how the game itself seems to be not that big of a deal. Not nearly as big as Texas-Texas Tech! Why is that? This game has better athletes in a better conference. This is THE game to watch this weekend.

With that said, I’ll give you my pic 2moro but I want you to think about this later today when your writing 2moro’s blog and making your pics. UGA plays really well when they are the underdog! (Please see last years game). I know about UF’s team speed, special teams and the revenge factor. And we could very easily get blown-out. But I don’t think so! Keep that in mind.

4 - I think in order for Georgia to win Knowshon has to go for 150 yards or more. It’s not about keeping Knowshon under 100, it’s about kepping him under 150. That goes for any team Georgia plays.

Both teams can score points, as evidenced by Georgia putting up 50+ on LSU and Florida as well. The key is defense. Georgia’s defense is quite weaker this year. letting up 38 points to LSU and 31 in the first half to Bama. Florida is a much better team the LSU, and probably could beat Bama in the SEC Championship. It’s Florida’s defense that will win the game for the Gators. That’s why ESPN and Vegas is predicting Florida the winner. Not to mention that while Urban won’t talk about the classless puppy stomp last year publicly, he said “he’ll handle it”. There won’t be any mercy this year. Tebow will be left in even as the Gators go up by 35 points… it’s time to quiet the puppies and have them talking about moving the game to Athens again…

How does 4/5 touches mean “probably” take it on the the house? He has twice in 18 attempts, prettty impressive, but hardly every 4 shots at it. Heck Prince Miller has returned one for a TD every 3rd time he has touched the ball, with a 44 yrd average. OK, 3 touches isn’t much of a sample, sort of joking there, BUT we do have qualified folks who can and have done a good job too. Asher averages only 2 yards less than James. We just spread it around more, but their average is better than his alone. I understand the point was that one big play potential, but the reality will be more of yards and field position. UGA is #1 in the SEC right now in both punt return yards, and net puntING yards given up.

It seems that many UGA bloggers seem to think the Dawgs have greatly improved since last year while the Gators are no better than when we last played you guys. Here are the major differences on the Gator side of the ball, as I see them:

Tebow and Harvin are fully healthy now, neither was 100% last year; For the first time since UM has been our coach we have established a good running game with several true weapons; We have arguably the best special teams in the NCAA in almost every category. Kickoff coverage, however, is just fair; Last year we had 9 new players on defense and our DL was totally banged up for the UGA game. This year we are rotating 8 players on the DL and our LBs and secondary are team strengths.

Bottom line: Overall, the Gators are playing the best football we have played since UM arrived, even better than when we kicked OSU’s butt in the BCS two years ago. We have enough weapons on offense to pretty move up and down the field and score points, while our defense has become very stingy. UF ranks number 1 in the SEC in scoring offense (UGA is 2nd), and we are number 1 in scoring defense (UGA is 8th). Both teams will be able to move the ball and score, but our defense will present a much more formidable speed bump against the Dawgs’ offense than your defense will against our offense. My prediction: Gators will win by at least 2 TDs. Now before one of you starts your inevitable name-calling, how about discussing a little logic behind why you think Georgia is better than UF this year as opposed to last year.

And by the way, give it up on the end zone celebration. Gators aren’t discussing this. It had no bearing on the game last year; you guys whipped us on both sides of the ball. This year it’s a different story.

Bullgator, A rationale post deserves an equal response: I believe that UGA’s defensive recruiting over the past several years has changed to reflect the growing popularity of spread offenses. Gone are the hole plugging DTs and 250lb LBers that still dominate on defenses such as LSU, SoCar and now KY. Instead, UGA has recruited smaller, faster DTs and beefed them up to 290+ lb, while still maintaining the ability to pursue runners. At the LB position, UGA has recruited speed galore. I don’t think you’ll find a faster and more athletic set of LBers in the conference. In the games that UGA has struggled on defense, it has been against big, traditional runningbacks and offensive lines, like Bama and LSU. I don’t have to tell you that UF’s OL and RBs are anything but traditional. I don’t predict that UGA shuts down UF’s offense, but I do believe that the dawgs will have more success against your offense than any team has this year, including Ole Miss (who also benefited from uncharacteristic UF turnovers). I don’t forsee a blowout from either team and believe that both offenses will at times move the ball well. I don’t think that it will be quite the shootout that many expect. The difference I believe, will be that as the game progresses UGA will be able to control the the clock with the running game against undersized UF DTs. Still, when it comes down to it, the team that better protects the ball and stays fresh late in the 4th Q wins. Here’s to a great time in Jacksonville at the WLOOCP! Go Dawgs, 34-31.

This game should be a good one,as both teams look to be coming in on the upswing. As a long time Gator fan the running game of Georgia concerns me.If Ga. decides to run heavy with the fullback thats been out and Moreno it will be a long day for us,we dont match up well to a power run formation. The coaches are keeping it quite but we have some injury issues on the inside of our D and this could get exposed. If its a shoot out we win.

Bull gator, not sure who you are reading in here that thinks UGA is way better, and UF is not. You need to kind of weed out the extreme comments, just like we have to when reading “gatorsruletheworlddude”.

You guys say you are better in defense, and the numbers point to that. I’d be willing to take your word at it. I doubt they took any step back to be sure. To me the offense is much better and more balanced.

I personally do not think that UF has a much better game in them at this point. I mean, where do you go from the past 2 weeks? They have been about as on-fire as you could be. With UGA we are still kinda of wondering how good we are at this point. So its proven VS potential. From that standpoint, when you factor in who might come out and play par, step it up, or miss a beat, there are probably more equations that work for a UF victory. But I think we have another gear, not sure you do. (if you do, we gonna need nitrous oxide)

I do know this: UGA is playing already much better than the team that headed out for J-ville last year. I think just as many UF are looking at it the same as you suggest we are. I get the feeling that many UF are just waiting to be revenge on those 07’ Dawgs.

murfdawg…I guess since you threw so much logic into your post I will do the same. I guess if UGA can go into Baton Rouge and win, than so can Alabama!! Hows that for trying to equal your brilliance. BAMA is 8-0 now and #2 in the country. We have beaten UGA in Athens and we have a couple of tough games coming up. LSU is good but not as good as they were thought to be. AU is a DISASTER!! So, I guess I can say I like Alabama’s chances of playing Florida in the SECCG!!!

SecIsFootball,

I agree with murfdawg… Beat AuBARN and LSU then come talk to us. You may have beaten UGA in September, but I promise you UGA’s offensive line is a MUCH improved unit than they were in September.

flightdocdaw and AltamahaDawg,

Thanks for two insightful posts. I think we’re in store for an excellent game on Saturday. I can’t remember more hype for a GA-FL game, particularly with both teams ranked where they are and with the SEC and BCS in play for both. Both teams are stacked with talent and speed.

Again, I believe both temas will be able to move the ball and score. But at least on paper (SEC stats), our defense appears to be a little stronger. But that’s why we play the games…

Go Gators!!!

A key to the game is UF’s special teams. Meyer gets them fired up in practice and then turns them loose. They are explosively fast and it will give them an edge over UGA. I’d look for UGA to maybe try something on special teams such as a lateral or pass on a kickoff return or a fake FG or punt. Dawgs will have to play perfect ball and prevent big plays from UF. Dawgs COULD win but the edge goes to UF.

Alabama did beat UGA, it was a good game. But get over it, Alabama has not won a meaningful game in 5 years and now they act like they are the annointed ones.

Gators will be tough. Hopefully they will get hit in the mouth again by UGA and will lose on Saturday.

The dawgs win easy and play bama for the title—-the results will be different this time, since playing in the dome is a home game for the dawgs. Easy Bamafan… we all just want to have a little fun on here… that’s what makes trash talking so great, but people like you are no good at it and ruin it for everyone else. I’m a Gator fan and by no means am I trying to defend any UGA fans (you guys are more than capable of taking up for yourselves), but please move on if you can’t be an adult. Anyway, if there are any UGA fans who think that Gator Nation is going the way of ESPN and thinking that we’re going to sleepwalk through this game, you couldn’t be any wronger (I know it’s not a word, but I think it sounds funny). We are all taking this game very seriously, have no fear. Besides, ESPN has maybe four credible ‘experts’ to their credit (Herbstreit (for the most part), Rece Davis, Pat Forde, and Ivan Maisel… I thought about adding Chris Fowler, but I think he’s a bag of d**che and I don’t want to give him the satisfaction). This is the same network that employs Lou Holtz, he of the Adolf Hitler jokes that no one gets. Seriously, no matter if you’re a Dawg fan or a Gator fan, I know that I am personally sick of those retarded Dr. Lou segments they shove down our throats. And his pep talks last year weren’t much better. And Corso just needs to dress up in a clown suit and pretend he’s in an invisible box while on the set of Gameday. I like him for the same reason Frank Caliendo likes John Madden; because he makes me feel smart. He gives you no new information or profound insight. In fact, nothing he ever says even sounds like words to me anymore. It’s all blah blah blah blah USC blah blah blah blah Pete Carroll blah blah blah blah BCS Championship blah blah blah blah. And then he throws on the Buckeye head and proceeds to binge drink the rest of the weekend away. At any rate, the smarter Gator fans (and, yes, we do exist) don’t listen to the ESPN ‘experts.’ We know the game is settled on the field and not on paper. If you want to entertain yourselves, by the way, scroll up to Independent Mind’s post and read it while imagining Arnold Schwarzenneiger’s yelling voice (DO IT, DO IT NOW!!!!). I hate it when people post with caps or bold font, like they have something profound to say. And speaking of caps, Bamafan; I recommend admitting yourself to the nearest psychiatric ward where they can keep you under 24 hour observation… maybe they’ll let you out in time for Thanksgiving.

I am absolutely ‘effin’ lovin’ the fact that all those brilliant talking heads on ESPN, and in particular the Jim Rome talk-fest, are predicting a Florida ‘beat-down’…that they’ll score a hundred if they can…that UM and TT are so steamed over last year they’ll run us off the field. I’ve had my doubts about this thing and I’ll probably keep ‘em but if ever I saw our chance to skin these lizards, it’s this time. Mr. Meyer and his minions had the chance to respond to the ‘celebration’ last year (remember the thing happened in the first quarter) and came up short - and don’t give me that crap that Tebow was ‘dinged up’ - he was dinged up for a reason - over use - and if they try to use him as a RB Saturday, he’ll pay a price.

Why would anyone predict that UGA will score less points than we did last year? Their defense isn’t as improved as our offense is it? No. UGA rolls this week. We give up a few td’s, but UGA scores often. UGA 52-21. Tebow and CUM cry together.

Why do dawg fans think they blew out LSU? The margin was only 14 pts and that margin came from 2 int. returns for tds. Did you realize that LSU with a couple of rookie qbs ran up 497 yds against you? You won’t get that lucky against the gators. Gators win it in a rout. I would love to be wrong and I wish that UGA could win so that we could administer another viscious beatdown. UF will give us a much tougher game. Yep. Looks like its UF-BAMA for all the sec marbles. Incidentally, thanks dawg fans for beating LSU. I didn’t think you had it in you but you pretty much handed us a 2 game lead over LSU with 3 to go. Even if we lose to LSU which I seriously doubt we would still win the west. I hope we get you again in the title game but I just can’t see it happening.

By bama12 titles

Voice of reason sounds more like voice of irrationality. I wish you could beat Florida but I don’t think you have a prayer. And if your mind has actually convinced itself that you can beat a team by 31 pts, a team that has manhandled you 17 out of the last 20, then you’ve lost all “reason” and need to be committed.

By SecIsFootball

Riley…BAMA hangs 31 on your team in a half and then scores with ease when needed in the 2nd half when we have to and you tell me I cannot talk until we beat LSU and AU. Should I read from you comments that beat LSU and AU is more significant than beating a top 10 UGA team??? Since UGA is ranked way above LSU and just beat them and they are ranked even further above AU, I would think a UGA fan would view BAMA’s win as significant. I guess you dont view your team as highly as most do. Too bad we wont get the same opportunity to whip the mutts again since BAMA will likely be playing UF in the SECCG!!

bama12 titles, whatever. Chat with you at about 7:30pm Saturday to hear you say “damn, you were right!” UGA was awakened by the first half of the bama game this season just like the UT game last year. We’re not losing again this year. Can’t wait to see you guys in Atlanta. Things will be MUCH different.

By voice of reason

October 30, 2008 8:27 PM | Link to this

(1) No. Why would they? (2) Not much in this game. If he trys to run on UGA, he’ll get hurt. (3) Demps will have less than 40 yds. (4) KM will do everything he did to them last year and more. (5) The penalty issue will be an interesting part of this game because the refs will probably pick on UGA more because of last year. Won’t matter though.

UGA is starting to get a handle on those penalties. My only concern is the personal fouls. Hopefully, the gators will get more red flags in that regard.

Moreno will go over 100 yards. The Florida defense has yet to face a back like Moreno who also has a compliment of WRs to balance things. Oh yeah, did I mention we have NFL-calibre QB who calls his own plays?!

much has been made of florida’s defense this year. Give me a break!!!Hawaii, Ole Miss, Tennessee, miami, Kentucky?! Yeah, right. These not are high-powered offenses this season.

I see florida as being too psyched for revenge. The Dawgs will jump up and bite the gators again on the back of moreno, Stafford’s arm, and Randy Moss,uh A.J. Green. You gotta get on the field in order to score gators.Time of possession will be key for the dawgs.

I have a sixth question. #6 Has Georgia brought the barn door to Jacksonville for Matthew Stafford to warm up throwing to for Saturdays game? In the run up to this game this season they obviously have lost the barn door that belongs on the Butts-Mehre practic fields because he simply can’t hit one with his throws.

ramdawg,

Bama fans have been active on this blog for years — through thick and thin. You, on the other hand, I have never heard of.

My concern for Saturday is winning against Arkansas State. I am pleased by the fact that Alabama is undefeated, but I have no illusions about the road ahead. Every game is an opportunity to lose.

As for the big game in Jacksonville, Georgia is a slight underdog on paper. That may well play to their advantage.

I expect a good game and I hope that there are no injuries — among the players or the fans. I look forward to enjoying another great weekend of SEC football.
