Can the UGA O-Line protect Stafford?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:
1. Can the Georgia O-Line give Stafford just a LITTLE protection?: If they can, Georgia has a real shot to win at LSU on Saturday. Many times we try to make football more complicated than it really is. But Saturday’s game in Baton Rouge really comes down to how well Georgia’s banged-up, baby-faced offensive line can play against the best defensive line this side of Georgia Tech’s. Florida gave Tim Tebow pretty good protection back on Oct. 11 in Gainesville and he sliced and diced that rebuilt LSU secondary. Matt Stafford and the Georgia receivers can do the same. But if the UGA O-Line, which is on its fourth starting left tackle, cannot protect and give Knowshon Moreno a little running room it will be a long afternoon for the Dawgs. One other thing: Georgia cannot give up on the running game, even if it’s not working in the first half.
2. What will the Auburn offense look like tonight?: Head coach Tommy Tuberville has been playing his cards pretty close to the vest during the off week. When he let OC Tony Franklin go two weeks ago, there really wasn’t enough time to make a lot of changes before the Tigers played at Arkansas. So what does Auburn do tonight at West Virginia? Do they go back to the I-formation and power running game? Do they take the redshirt off true freshman Barrett Trotter? Do they have enough offense of any kind just to win the game? Is Tuberville, who has beaten Alabama six straight times, really in trouble? If Auburn wins tonight, does the criticism lessen?
3. Will Saturday night be Phillip Fulmer’s last stand? Saturday night’s game against Alabama will be Phillip Fulmer’s 200th as the head coach at Tennessee. This is Fulmer’s 16th full season as the Volunteers head coach. Saturday night’s game could well determine if he is around for No. 17. There is no way to sugar coat this: It has been a bad season on Rocky Top for Fulmer and his offensive coaching staff. There is this nagging sense that if the Volunteers (3-4) lose and drop to 3-5, it’s going to be hard for Fulmer to survive. I’m going to Knoxville Saturday night because I want to see the mood of the crowd. They will be jacked up at the beginning of this game because it’s Alabama and there is an opportunity to beat the No. 2 team in the land and salvage something from this disappointing season. But what happens if the game turns ugly and Tennessee gets embarrassed? Or what happens if Tennessee wins? Either way, it’s going to be an interesting evening at Neyland Stadium.
4. What kind of crowd will turn out for Georgia Tech-Virginia?: I can’t tell you how many Georgia Tech fans have told me over the years that they would go to the games if the team would just give them something to get excited about. Well, how about this: If Georgia Tech beats Virginia on Saturday and Virginia Tech loses at Florida State (which could certainly happen), the Yellow Jackets will control their own destiny in the ACC Coastal. Paul Johnson is well on his way to becoming the ACC Coach of the Year. The ACC is completely wide open and Johnson has the Jackets contending for the championship. Given the way Virginia is playing this is one of the biggest games in the country on Saturday. This team deserves a sellout or at least close to a sellout.
5. Will Texas and Colt McCoy finally cool off?: I picked Missouri to beat Texas last week because the Longhorns had invested so much and played so well in the 45-35 win over Oklahoma the week before. I reasoned that the Longhorns had to have a letdown against a good Missouri team. I was wrong because I didn’t take a couple of things into account: 1) Missouri is not that good; 2) Right now Colt McCoy is the hottest quarterback I’ve ever seen. McCoy has completed a staggering 81.2 percent of his passes (160 of 197) for 1,894 yards and 19 touchdowns with only three interceptions. Last week he completed 29 of 32 passes (90.6 percent). Two of the incomplete passes were drops and the other he threw away. Now Texas and McCoy face another Top 10 team in Oklahoma State Saturday in Austin.

tony, What did you think of Dabo Swinney? i thought I was watching a Holiday Inn Express commercial instead of seeing a college football coach. He was definitely hamming it up, touching the rock and pointing at the sky, his pre-game speech, and making the punter run off the field. He was obviously playing to the crowd. That being said, I couldn’t believe the AD was on the sidelines. What coach would want to go to Clemson and be a puppet for thst guy?

the real question is not whether the line can protect stafford…its whether or not Bobo and Richt can alter their gameplan accordingly. this is not the game to be using 7 step drops with play action on second and long and running toss sweeps to the short side of the field.
regardless, it will be a slobberknocker down in Red Stick!

As an Alabama fan, for record purposes, I need for LSU to have another loss. I hope it can be Saturday but I just dont see it. While LSU hasnt show up as superstars this year, neither has UGA. With a young OL for UGA and a stout DL at LSU, they will spend a lot of time in the UGA backfield.
AU will be back to the I formation where they can run the ball and keep running it. I would think that is what they used their week off to get back into. If not, Tubs is a bigger moron that he leads people to believe. GO WVU!!!
As for the mood in Knoxville, lets just put it this way….If you go onto the UT ticket page, you can still find tickets to the Alabama-Tennessee game on Saturday night. I dont know about you, but that tells me a lot about the mood in Knoxvegas!!
I have heard UGA fans talk about Tech fans for a couple of years on this blog and at times about their fan support. I was at the MSU-GT game several weeks back and I now see what UGA fans were talking about. GT has an exciting new coach and they were playing an OOC game against an SEC team and there must have been 15,000 empty seats. Thats embarrassing!!!
Texas rolls on Saturday!! That team is just too good right now and McCoy is FAR AND AWAY the best QB in college football!!!

The fact is that even ACC people don’t care about their own teams.

To answer your questions, 1)Stafford better wear extra padding because he’s going to get up close and personal with a lot of turf Saturday. 2)Auburn has an offense? 3)Fear the Fulmer. Phil owns Alabama and he’ll win by a field goal. But, he won’t save his job after dropping the next two games. 4)If they offer free pocket protectors, GT will get a full crowd. 5)McCoy probably won’t get quite the stats he’s used to against OSU; however, when you’re hot you’re hot. Texas still wins by 14.

Oh wait if you mean better as opposed to suck than it is better.
You missed my point all together. Arguing about who has the best teams year in and year out is pointless.
Its a waste of your time and a waste of my time. The reason I think the SEC is superior is the fan base and the match ups week in and week out.

The Georgia offensive line has done a very good job at pass protection this year giving up only 8 sacks. Maybe that changes against LSU but the stats do not support such a theory. It would just be speculation. The media is just making crap up at this point. Unbelievable.

Here are today’s completely fallible responses to Tony’s observations——
(1) I hope so, for Statfford’s sake. None of UGA’s national media detractors are talking about UGA’s biggest problem, that is, its relatively young and now busted-up offensive line. Given the tissue-paper O-line that Stafford has played behind, the Dawg offense has performed well. Frankly, it’s time that Satfford’s coordinator and head coach start drawing up some new plays and protection schemes, otherwise, it’s going to be a long afternoon against LSU.
(2) Auburn has an offense? This didn’t “just happen.” Even when the Tigers were winning big games over the last several years, they were mostly doing it with a merely adequate offense and a great defense that made good things happen (turnovers and defensive scores). Half that equation is missing now, and no team’s defense can’t be counted on to score.
(3) If Tennessee loses, this will be Fulmer’s last season. Of course, if the volunteers lose any of their remaining games, this will probably be his last season. Given his successes in Knoxville, Fulmer should choose to go gracefully. There is a a season for everything … .
(4) Good lord, if Tech can’t sell out this game, there’s no hope. The resurgent Yellow Jackets are unexpectedly 6-1 and ranked 18th, and playing an improving Vriginia squad. Granted the ACC is not currently the strongest football conference in America, but the Yellow Jackets have already far exceeded expectations in Coach Johnson’s first season. Calling all Tech alumni——do you care? Heck, I even thought about buying some nosebleed tickets and going to the UVa game (and I never earned a credit at Tech!).
(5) No, Colt McCoy cannot sustain an 80% completion rate in Division I football, not even playing against some of the back-pedaling Big XII defenses. He’s a great passer, but the numbers will catch up with him … nor should we realistically expect him to maintain those kind of outrageous numbers. The other side fields a team, too (in most games, anyway!).

If this is truly a “magical” season for Bama we’ll find out on Saturday. They’ve been hanging on by a thread. Their second half struggles are very telling. Depth is a big issue with this team. This will probably be a close game down to the wire and you have to wonder if Alabama has enough left in the tank. This looks like a classic let down game. Bama is coming off two hard fought wins in which it had to pull every trick out of the bag to win. Tennessee had a relatively easy win last week. Granted, Tennessee sucks, but they could have an emotional edge in this game. I don’t know. This just looks like an upset special to me.

I love my Dawgs….but I , not a coach, can just about predict what play we run based on down and yardage. it’s almost like Bobo has a computer print out based on down, yardage, field position etc as to what to run. If I can can call it, A DC who has studied it, along with movement and formations can eat it up. Come on Dawgs, mix it up. How about a reverse to a wide out from Knowshon when we run that sweep. might not work, but it gives them something to think about.

P.S Conferences don’t win games, teams do. The SEC has 4 teams that would be competitive in any league. The SEC has some matchups that are painful to watch, just like all conferences do. Not going to get in a spitting contest of conferences, though the SEC would definitely win that one. Does the SEC have more rabid fans? Absolutely. Yes, you could win the “We got spirit, yes we do, we got spirit how ‘bout you” cheer. Happy?

JB, I am sure Bobo does have a computer print out with field posistion, down and distance, defensive fronts, and what plays to call against different lineups and plays of the opposing defense. It’s called a “game plan”. All OCs have these printouts. They spend the week before the game in staff meetings and watching film to prepare them. Usually, if a D can force a team to abandon their game plan their team can control the game. Like Bama not allowing UGA any yards on the ground in the first half. Bobo will have a game plan at LSU, let’s hope he can stick to it!

At Tech winning football is like Broadway coming to Calhoun, Georgia, and the local press not saying a word about it. Gailey and his crew kind of lull us to the belief that a championship attitude was wasted on the likes of Grant Field. The fan should not expect more than a pretty day, a nice hot dog and a social occasion when coming to see Tech play. Of course it was all calculated to put us to sleep and let a sub par and not very hard working coach have a pretty good retirement plan and collect close to a million a year with low expectations. It is like conning your boss into two work days because nothing is ever done on the other three, but keep the pay coming in for a whole week. Then we hire CPJ. The press is no fool and after watch the Gailey show and losses to Duke and whoever else got us on a bad day, they were not going to stick their neck out and tell us we had a winner, so we at Tech figured we had another Curry or Gailey, since he came from Navy, high on character especially when it comes to explaining why they can’t win. There was no clue we had this kind of coach in CPJ except the same propaganda we got about high character on Gailey and Curry usually spun by the Tech PR firm because they had nothing else to explain the high salaries. CPJ started sounding a little like Steve Spurrier and we kind of thought we heard him say something but no one really picked up on this self confidence or pointing out to the press where they were getting it wrong, or seeing the hard working staff and player. At Georgia we know the coach’s wife is the drink lady, at Tech we didn’t know until lately we had a genius as a coach. Word will get out by word of mouth, the press will get it and pretend it was them who discovered this gold mine, but it doesn’t matter this show won’t be missed too much longer no matter where it is played.

Tech needs to increase the amount of student tickets it sells and student sections in the stadium and they could have filled the stadium for this game easily. I know the AA is salivating over taking advantage of the wealthy alum, but the alum are not filling the sections.
On the other hand, student tickets SOLD OUT for this game just a couple of hours after going on sale. Its not rocket science people.

I didn’t attend Tech but I grew up watching them and I think that the biggest problem they have right now is the fact that we’ve been here before this decade. They’ve been 5-2 or 6-1 in Oct and then they continually blow games in Nov and end up losing to Georgia and finish at 7-5. They’re going to have to go at least 9-3 this year and beat Georgia before tickets sales increase for the next few seasons.
Also, Tech is in pro sports town within several sports talk radio stations and the fan mentality of you either win every game or you suck. I think with a majority of the fan base in the Atl metropolitan area they’ve taken on this mentality. Plus when you’re school is located in a metropolitan area of of 5-6 million people you’re not going to be the center of the universe like you would in Athens, Auburn, Clemson…etc…. I guess they just need to win more games and maybe do a better job of getting non-alumni to the games. I’ll admit not the greatest football fan base.
P.S. - Auburn lost at home to Bobby Petrino and Arkansas that is the most pathetic thing I’ve seen in college football this season.

**1)I see this being a close game, although I give LSU the edge because of the missed opportunities UGA has had coupled with the LSU home-field advantage.
2)AU will mix their play calling with the ‘I’ and the spread. It wouldn’t surprise me to see WVA take this one, but maybe AU wins by 3.
3)This could be the ‘upset’ of the week. ALA is feeling cocky & TENN is desperate. TENN by 3.

5)TEXAS is HOT! How could you pick against this team now? TX wins by 14.**

Auburn is a complete mess right now. When we made fools of ourselves, we at least had probation to blame.
Don’t let the final scores of Bama games (Bama has outscored its opponents 95-3 in the first quarter) or the UT/MSU game (it was only 13-3 in the 4th quarter) fool you. Although Bama’s offense has struggled in second halves recently, UT is a bad team.

BCS Doomsday Scenario
Tony, Yes the BCS in itself is a doomsday scenario. With the parity in college football there is no way two teams can be chosen for a bowl and call the winner a champ making all other bowls irrelavent. Historians will look back on this illogical, rediculous period and all agree the college football world took a stupid pill to accept being forcefed this travesty.
This Saturday who do you pick to play in the BCS bowl. Or would the old bowl system be much better pairing all the top teams with everyone having a shot, creating great excitement all over the country. Let the bowls sift them out if we can’t have a playoff. All we get each year is an illigitimate champion that knowbody respects unless it is your school.
I have my own poll and that is what I go by. I treat all the bowls the same each year to sift out my champion. I give the bcs bowl absolutely no legitimacy and neither does anyone else that I am aware of unless there school is in it. The media hypes the heck out of it and knowbody cares unless it is your school and it just makes all the others more angry about the system.
It is wrong! Please use whatever influence you can muster along with your friends in the media to help bring this horrible period in college sports to an end.
I respect you as a journalist and realize you are bound to reporting whatever system you are bound with. I don’t always agree with you but then I don’t agree with a lot of stuff from politics on down. But I do respect you.
Sorry I am a day late and a dollar short on my comments about your article. But that is about the way I go through life.

1- The O line has not let Stafford down all year. It is time for him to man up, hang in the pocket, set his feet, make the throw, and take the hit. That is what a true QB does. This game will depend on Stafford going deep to back the LSU D up and open things up for Knowshon. Unless UGA spreads LSU’s defense out with 3 and 4 WR sets and goes with the shotgun, that could create some seams for Moreno and KIng to cut back and get some yardage. 2- I think Tubbs has held out the idea of keeping the spread O in order to keep some recruits in the fold. Let’em go Coach and use the power run game. If You hang on to the ball Your D will keep You in the game. 3- It seems that every week is Fulmer’s last stand. This is a championship Coach, sad. 4- I predict a slim crowd because Tech fans will be busy talking smack on the UGA blogs. Why don’t You guys buy a ticket? 5- Tony, I told You Big MO would lose because they don’t have a defense. I also told You Texas would beat OU, You never listen! Texas doesn’t have much of a D either, but they have Muschamp, that means the guys they DO have will play all out! Also, IMO, Colt McCoy is now the best QB in the country and Okie State doesn’t play defense. So unless Texas self-distructs McCoy will play pitch and catch again this week.

Atlanta is not a college town like Athens or Clemson or Opelika. It is a tough sell plus all the graduates typically leave Atlanta for their jobs. That being said, the GT-MSU game was electric and we were short about 6000 seats - not 15,000. My entourage will account for 3 seat at the UVA game and we are coming from Ohio. It just isn’t as easy as walking across town to go to the game like you all can.
Thanks Tony for commenting on the GT defense. They are good! Word-Daniels is out but should be healthy and hungry come Nov 29th!
GT-UVA has turned into a rivalry since 1990 when they were #1 and we went there and won 41-38 on a last second field goal on our way to a Natl Championship. I expect the game to be a nail biter but would prefer it to be similar to the game we played against MSU!

What kind of crowd will turn out for Georgia Tech-Virginia? Here is one more point for ya - If Tech beats Virginia (and they should) and UGA loses to LSU (which they could), then Tech will be ranked higher than UGA after 8 games into the season Tech was supposed to be hopeless and UGA was supposed to contend for the national title. Now you can argue all you want about strength of schedule, weak ACC, strong SEC, yada, yada, yada, but the fact would remain.

He says it’s all about the kids yet he kisses the rocks, points to the sky and runs out IN FRONT of the team by about 30 yards to soak up all the applause. What a goof! Most coaches run out WITH their team and not typically in the front row. Also, his pregame pep talk (or should I say scream) was silly. You have to yell to be emotional or get your team fired up? They were all looking at him with a blank stare. We’re underdogs at Death Valley? Are you kidding me? He kept yelling this. Virginia is the last game on our schedule that it feels like we ‘should’ win. It feels like we can win all of them, but that’s not the same thing. That makes it the last game where every Tech fan gets a sinking feeling that Tech will somehow find a way to embarass themselves. If CPJ pulls it off I think I lot of Tech fans will start thinking of the Gaily curse as broken and will start picking up tickets.
That being said I’m flying in for the game. The alumni should be here for this, even if I understand why they’re not.

Big Tone,
I say this every Thursday or Friday on this blog w/ you. “I predict UGA finally gets it going and runs on all cylinders”. And I recommend you should pick an easy UGA win.
And everyweek thereafter we have been wrong because of penalties, turnovers and horrid play calling.
My gut tells me your going to pick a close LSU victory 2-moro. No so fast my friend…….I think my Dawgs are going to look like world beater’s Sat afternoon to set up the big game with the Gators. I don’t see a 30 point blowout but I do see a 17 or 20 point fairly easy victory. I think LSU’s schedule has been a joke so far and the only team they have played made them look like a high school team……They were also not very impressive last week as well. I say UGA 35-17. Just think about it tonight before you write your blog.

Will, you could have easily substituted UGA for LSU in that sentence “I think LSU’s schedule has been a joke so far and the only team they have played made them look like a high school team.”

UGA wins by 10. LSU turns it over 3 times. Aubie is done. WV by 7. BAMA squeaks by 17-14. Tech wins by 7. Over a team that USC destroyed 51-7. Now do you see why the ACC is not very highly thought of ? M? Texas wins by 21. Okie St blows-no defense in the big 12 period, great offenses aside.
Question to M:
Is that the same vaunted d-line that stafford and moreno abused last November ? Yeah, thought so. And the previous 6 novembers. Johnson’s offense is RUN ORIENTED. Have you watched UGA vs the run this year. Make Nesbitt throw to your 1 receiver on the entire campus that can actually catch-GAME OVER. You might not even score.

Of course the UGAy fans hope Bama loses. It makes their beloved puppies look better. Get real losers, Bama will win. P.S. so will LSU
