Dawgs, Jackets get it done
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s a good thing I don’t have to back up my picks with cold, hard cash or this morning I would be speaking to you from my second job as a greeter at Wal-Mart.
I’m thankful Georgia (over Tennessee), Georgia Tech (over Gardner-Webb), and North Carolina (over Notre Dame) stepped up or I would have gone 0-for-the weekend. In what turned out to be the second Shakeout Saturday of the season, I went 3-7 which dropped the overall record to 46-24.
I promise to hunker down and try to do better this week. We are bloodied, unbowed, but certainly humbled as we present another version of the Fearless Friday Forecast.
1. Vanderbilt (5-1) at Georgia (5-1): Vanderbilt rarely plays two bad games in a row under Bobby Johnson and last week the Commodores had 10 penalties in their 17-14 loss to Mississippi State. Vanderbilt’s defense is legit but the offense is struggling, which is why MacKenzi Adams will get the start at quarterback over Chris Nickson. If Georgia doesn’t turn the ball over, the Bulldogs will be fine and can start getting ready for next week’s trip to Baton Rouge. If the Dawgs are sloppy, this one could be a little scary. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 13.
2. Georgia Tech (5-1) at Clemson (3-3): Tommy Bowden is out as head coach and Dabo Swinney, an Alabama man, is in as the interim. Psychologically, Clemson is a very fragile football team and has been known to shrink a little bit when it gets hit in the mouth. Willy Korn gets his first start at quarterback for Clemson against one of the best defensive fronts in the country. Tech needs to come out very aggressive in this one. Georgia Tech 24, Clemson 14.
3. Ole Miss (3-3) at Alabama (5-0): Alabama has had a week off since a sloppy 17 -14 win over Kentucky on Oct. 4. The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 2 and could go to No. 1 if Texas falls to Missouri. That should be motivation enough. Bama’s defense, which is No. 2 in the nation against the rush (50.2 ypg) will shut down the Ole Miss running game and turn up the heat on QB Jevan Snead, who already has nine interceptions. He’ll get at least two more at Bryant-Denny. Alabama 28, Ole Miss. 13.
4. LSU (4-1) at South Carolina (5-2): LSU’s defense was exposed a little last week when Florida used all of those road runners to roll up 265 yards rushing. The Gamecocks don’t have as many weapons as the Gators (nobody does), but they do have WR Kenny McKinley and QB Stephen Garcia is making his first start. South Carolina’s No. 3 defense will slow down LSU RB Charles Scott and force the Tiger quarterbacks to beat them. Ladies and gentlemen, here is this week’s Upset Special. South Carolina 13, LSU 10.
5. Miss. State (2-4) at Tennessee (2-4): This should be riveting. Mississippi State’s offense is ranked 103 (300.67 ypg) while Tennessee’s offense is ranked 104 (299.50 ypg). The Bulldogs are coming off a pretty good win over Vanderbilt while Tennessee and coach Phillip Fulmer need something, anything, to keep the wolves at bay for another week. The Vols survive and the anticipation begins to build for next week’s visit from No. 2 Alabama. Tennessee 14, Miss. State 10.
6. Arkansas (3-3) at Kentucky (4-2): Arkansas beat one team (Auburn) with a bad offense last week and will face another today in Kentucky, which has scored more than 20 points only once (Louisville, 27-2) against a Division I-A opponent this season. Kentucky got beat by special teams play last week against South Carolina. The Wildcats won’t make that mistake again. Kentucky 17, Arkansas 14.
7. Miami (3-3) at Duke (3-2): Miami just finished a bad three-game home stretch, losing to Florida State (41-39) and North Carolina (28-24) while having to fight UCF to survive 20-14. Duke has had a week off to recover from the 27-0 loss at Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils, for all their problems, have played Miami tough the past two seasons. They’ll do it again in Durham but this time coach David Cutcliffe gets his first high-profile win at Duke. Duke 21, Miami 17.
8. Wake Forest (4-1) at Maryland (4-2): For a 4-1 team, Wake Forest is having a difficult time running the football. The Deacons are 110th nationally (99.0 ypg) on the ground. But the Deacons have compensated with the short passing game of Riley Skinner, who played his best game of the season (186 pass, 74 run) against Clemson. Maryland has beaten Wake Forest in seven of their last nine meetings. Not this time. Wake Forest 17, Maryland 16.
9. North Carolina (5-1) at Virginia (3-3): North Carolina has not won in Charlottesville since 1981 and Saturday the Tar Heels will travel to Mr. Jefferson’s university without their best offensive weapon. Brandon Tate is college football’s all-time leader in combined kickoff and punt return yards. The senior tore up his knee against Notre Dame so his college career is over. Virginia has won two straight since a 1-3 start behind RB Cedric Peerman (173 yards rushing against East Carolina). The Tar Heels win a squeaker because of defense. North Carolina 20, Virginia 17.
10. Missouri (5-1) at Texas (6-0): The best time to play Texas is the week before or the week after Oklahoma. The Longhorns and QB Colt McCoy were great last week in beating Oklahoma (45-35) but now they will have to play just as well to beat Missouri and Chase Daniel, a Texas native who is looking forward to his homecoming. Daniel struggled last week with three interceptions in the second half in a loss to Oklahoma State. I don’t see him playing poorly two weeks in a row. Missouri 35, Texas 30.

The Tigers will use a Cajun version of the Colonels secret recipe on the cocks from south carolina…..the only upset here is you having to explain yourself Sunday night on TV on why LSU cooked the cocks…..Geaux Tigers (LSU is 15-2-1 against the cocks)

I think it’s snowing in hell because I actually agree with most of your picks. The only “upset” switch I’d make is Ole Miss beating Bama. I don’t see LSU losing to Spurrier. With Bama and Texas losing, Penn State will claim the top spot this week. I just hope Sports Illustrated holds off on the cover shot until after the Ohio State game. Don’t need the SI Cover jinx.

It concerns me a little that Tony picks Tech to win, since he is probably the worst football prognosticator ever. I do think uga is more likely to get beat by vandy than clemmons beating tech. And Thank God and Greyhound that Chan Gailey is gone forever.

Dang what a huge weekend for the great ACC!
I mean what is more riveting than:
Ga Tech v Clemson- let’s just hope this coach doesn’t cross Harper. What a baby.
Miami v Duke- someone needs to tell Duke that you never take a slide ruler to a knife fight.
Wake Forest v Maryland- the storied tradition of this rivalry err well not so much.
UNC v Virginia- What do they eat at this tailgate? Scones, apple butter and tea?
And this is a big weekend in the ACC
Think I’ll go see who’s playing in the MEAC this weekend.

vandy’s qb is pesky and gutty but vandy will be finally exposed some in Athens..not enough of a running game for vandy to have a real chance.. LSU beats Carolina in a close one though..Carolina proving to be not so bad after all Bama wins big at home with the bye week rest.. Texas wins at home..Mizzou got exposed last weekend..Chase not so good when he has pressure and they dont have a defense..Texas out scores them Penn State overrated..their lack of depth on defense will begin to show as the schedule FINALLY gets a little tougher..if they make it to the title game they will get crushed by an SEC team or Texas or USC and everybody knows it

I will say this, GT does have one of the best defensive fronts in the ACC !!!
Now on to UGA !!!! They will stomp on VANDY… Vandy lost to Miss. State, come on, Not even a ranked team… Of course they beat Auburn, but face it, Auburn is playing worse than those weak ACC teams this year…
UGA wins, Tech may pull off one, but it will be a close one.

The Gamecocks have become the fashionable upset pick this week. Several other pigskin prognosticators have picked them, also. As a Gamecock fan, that is troublesome. I would much rather we continue not getting any love from the pundits.
We’ll see if this sudden respect translates into success on the field Saturday night. One thing is for sure - Spurrier won’t forget last year’s fake field goal. The cocks are MUCH improved on special teams this year under Coach Rychleski.

Looks like Tony is trying to buck a trend and go with some unconventional picks.
The timing just sucked for my alma mater. Sure wish Clempson would have waited another week to make their move. Unfortunately for Tech, Clempson will ride a tide of emotion to a one-sided victory over Tech tomorrow.
Vandy/UGA might be close had it been in Nashville, but it ain’t gonna happen between the hedges. If necessary, look for some suspicious damaging penalties in the 4th quarter, but my sense is that it won’t be required. Vandy is paper thin.
The fashionable trend seems to be to trash LSU after their loss at the Swamp last week. Face it, South Carolina ain’t Florida, and Columbia ain’t the “Swamp”. LSU will get it done this week (and next).
I don’t know how anyone could pick Tennessee against any D-1A opponent this year. They really appear completely clueless. They may win, but I’d avoid picking them. Forced to pick this game, I’d take MSU. Their tough defense should give Fulmer’s troups more headaches than they can handle.
My “upset special” is UVA over UNC.

I had been concerned about Kentucky being the trap game on Bama’s schedule all season long, but I see this Saturday’s game against the Rebels as the most dangerous one yet for the Tide.
Ole Miss has the talent and they now have the coaching staff to make them contenders in the SEC. This game is huge for them. The Crimson Tide will have to bring their A game to survive this shootout. At least they have an A game now!

1- UGA should be able to run the ball against Vandy and control the game. Nothing fancy needed here, You are bigger, stronger, and deeper than Vandy so play some smash mouth. 2- New QB against a very strong, veteran D. Tech should win this one but their D needs to make a statement early and rattle the young QB. 3- Let’s see if Bama is ready to play, or if they are begining their second half melt down. If Bama wins in a blowout they are on their way to the SECCG and watch out Auburn! 4- I too thought the Gamecocks had an excellent chance at winning this game but they have a rookie QB going up against a good if not great D. But then so does LSU and their rookie is on the road. With two good Ds and two rookies at QB I am going with the home team. I pick the Gamecocks over LSU, and I can’t believe I am saying that. 5- Both offenses struggle, but UT has the better D. UT gave up their first rushing TD of the year against UGA and Missy St’s passing attack doesn’t worry me. UT wins. 6- UK’s go to reciever blew out his knee last Saturday and they didn’t have enough weapons to start with, so I am picking Arky. This is a border war so anything can happen, but I think Arky pulls it out. 7- Who cares, I am losing faith in Randy Shannon’s ability to motivate a team. The U played a good game against the Gators but has been losing ground since. Miami has the talent but Cutliff is a better game day coach. I can’t quite bring Myself to pick Duke so a very shaky vote for the Canes. 8- Wake should win on coaching alone, the way they win 90% of their games. 9- North Carolina is the better team, so I am picking Carolina. I don’t think it will be that close. 10- You forgot about the Defense Tony, Big Mo doesn’t have one! Texas in a shootout.

Maybe Alabama does beat Ole Miss but I am thinking that is perfect for the upset. I don’t think South Carolina is an upset looking at what we have on those two teams and they are playing in Columbia. I am sure the old ball coach thinks he should win in his heart but he has learned to be a little more closed mouth. And I really think Tech is going to lay one on a distracted and undercoached Clemson team.

Keep it simple, you obviously have no idea what you’re talking about. Penn State was believed to have a lack of depth on defense until the guys replacing the starters stepped up. There’s plenty of depth on the defense which is why they are only giving up an average of 12 points a game. The also rank in the top 15 in every defensive category in the country. I also wouldn’t be so quick to predict that IF Penn State made it to the NC game that they would get beat by an SEC or Big 12 team. Look at recent history buddy…Penn State usually beats the SEC and Big 12 in bowl games….and with this team surpassing the success of those previous teams, I’d say Penn State has the ability to beat anyone this year.

Try cammo jerseys it will confuse the defense; they will lose the receives in coverage, and if it backfires like the “Blackout”, it will be easier to sneak out of the stadium.

My dearest “WILL”:
There is embellishment … and then there is lying.
The only way there will be 50,000 people at Valdosta State’s Homecoming Saturday would be to have the federal government to continue its bailout program by standing around and giving away $1 million bills to anyone who attends.

You’re out of your mind if you think that Paul Johnson is a threat to leave in the middle of his first season, which has been a success up to this point. I don’t see how Tommy Bowden getting fired on Monday, even if he was a cancer, would make Clemson stronger. Tech should win as easily as they SHOULD have beaten Gardner Webb with a 3rd string and non-option quarterback. Georgia [sadly] will be too much for Vandy. LSU will get beat by USC, VT will get beat by BC, UNC will beat Virginia, MSU over Tenn, Texas over Missouri, boxers over briefs, etc. Clemson names their next head coach and it will be Bobby Johnson, who will enjoy winning for a change. Vanderbilt dies a little inside.

Draw a line from OK City to Louisville, than due east to DC, anything laying South and East, pretty much the same.

Vandy with 10 penalties in a game? are you sure? We may be in for a long day on saturday, Our average is 11 and if Vandy has 10 this game could very well go on into the late evening hours. Any idea which crew is officiating this week?

The question is always asked why do outsiders come on to the uga blog. Well we you are having a bad day and need a good laugh this is the place to come. Lets see they went from the #1 team to where? they were going to win it all. Talk about Saban all you want but where is bama in the polls and where is Saint Mark. Oh please let me say it for all the leghumppers on here…. NEXT YEAR IS GOING TO BE OUR YEAR…………….. UGA will go down by 14 and after the game I can’t wait to hear all the leghumppers stop talking about how Saint Mark needs to go. In order to get to the NC uga will need a coach, If Adams was smart he would go after Tommy,CMR will never win the big one. You have to be a strong man and not let your team walk over you and that he is not.

GT 42 Clemson 20 GT has huge team advantages going into this game.
Miami 33 Duke 17 Miami had very close, last minute/play losses to FSU and UNC. FSU & UNC are WAY better then Duke. Miami wins easily.
MD 23 Wake 20 Wake has NO running game. Stop the Wake pass game and commit no TO’s and MD wins.
UVA 30 UNC 23 UNC has lost some key players to injuries, and UVA has finally found running game, and a QB. UVA beatdown of MD was no fluke.
BC 27 VT 23 VT has VERY weak passing game, and has relied on rush game with QB accounting for large portion of rush yds. VT has also lost several key playmakers to injuries and suspensions. BC has VERY strong rush defense, and has more balanced rush/pass offense. BC shuts down VT run game and BC wins.

Sautee Dog-
We play in a tough conference and beat each other up. The refs don’t like us. These were 2 outstanding defensive teams. Did I mention that we won the game? GW was a last minute replacement. You guys scheduled Central Mich and Ga Southern in advance.

Ga will win tomorrow, but i think the real question is when will they get a signature win? I mean a win by at least three touchdowns. They need a win like that. I really think CMR and Mike Bobo should throw the bll more in a variety of ways like screens, bootlegs, roll outs, etc. The bulldogs cant line up and play smash mouth football with this banged up line. I think Georgia is saving something. I hope thats the case because this offense is so predictable right now. I look for the breakout game to be in Baton Rouge when the bulldogs will open that office up. Ga. 27 Vandy 10. Upset special Ole Miss 27 Bama 21. Dawg fans we will be ok but we better have it together against Florida because if we dont they will try to beat us by atleast 50.

LAST WEEK, I WAS 8 FOR 10 & BEAT TONY WHO WAS ONLY 3 FOR 10!!
I posted:
I had a good day with my predictions yesterday: {This takes my mind off Gardner-Webb.] October 10, 2008 8:41 PM | Link to this* I disagree with Tony: Longhorns beat #1 Sooners, Gators will upset LSU, Miss. State upsets Vandy, Gamecocks will derail Wildcats, Penn State beats Wisconsin. I concur: Dawgs get revenge on Vols, Tech will win big over GW [I hope they can get up for this game], Tarheels beat the Irish, Auburn over Arkansas. Mo. over Okla. St. *I was right on all my disagreements with Tony: 5 for 5! I was only wrong on 2 agreements: Arkansas [I started to pick them!] and Oklahoma State,[and that Tech would win big]. Overall, 8 out of 10 vs 3 out of 10 for him. Ha! Ha! I won!! See my note above about Tech. Obviously, they didn’t get up for the game!
This Week. I disagree with Tony: Miami 24 Duke 21 UVA 21 UNC 18 MD 28 WF 21 Texas 41 MO 31 Ark 14 Ky 13
I agree with the rest: Dawgs over Vandy, Jackets beat Clemson, Bama defeats Ole Miss, SC upsets LSU at home, Vols hold off Miss. State in a close one,

By not complaining said: “GT one of the best defensive fronts in the nation LOL, OMG, I can not stop laughing, they play in the weak ACC for crying out loud !!!!!”
WHY IS IT THAT THE “WEAK” ACC IS GETTING MORE PLAYERS DRAFTED BY THE NFL THAN THE “STRONG” SEC?
For those downgrading the ACC, the following graphic and comments were noted on Raycom TV during the GT-Miss. State game: “MORE PLAYERS WERE DRAFTED FROM THE ACC, 115, OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS THAN FROM ANY OTHER CONFERENCE! THIS INCLUDES THE #1,2, AND 3 PICKS: MATT RYAN, BC; CALVIN JOHNSON, GT; AND MARIO WILLIAMS, NC STATE!”
This was also noted in the AJC: http://www.ajc.com/gatech/content/sports/gatech/stories/2008/09/15/georgiatechacc_sec.html in an article by KEN SUGIURA.
So much for your pathetic trash talk, not complaining!!!!

Ok Tony I will play along, I was also 8 out of 10 last week.
I agree, only GA can keep the the UGA-Vandy game close this weekend
Clemson has top 25 talent , they just havent showed it, they could do that with Bowden gone, but I think Tech will prevail.
Bama easy
Seems to be the trendy pick to take S Carolina over LSU, i just dont see it
I dont know and truly dont care about the next 2, but if MS state beats UT, Fulmer will be unemployeed before Christmas, I guess UT barely and I will give Tony a chance and take Arkansas over UK
Miami is due for a good game
Maryland , because they are at home
Tar Heels are pretty good
Texas, bet the house

LOL PSU, I’m betting you’re an Ohio State fan. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of Michigan tomorrow. Then we’ll let your jerseys dry from all the tears shed in a loss to Michigan State and embarass you on national television next week. Penn State will go undefeated….and Texas and Bama will be watching the NC game from home.

3 picks I disagree w/ Tony B on:
UVA beats UNC: Reasons are- at Virginia, Tate is out, and UVA is playing w/ high confidence.
Maryland Beats Wake: Reasons are- Maryland is not all that bad. They rarely lose two in a row and Wake will finally get exposed. And, its at Maryland
Miami beats Duke: Miami can roll up some points and while Duke has improved, talent will continue to the decisive factor at Duke until Cutliff gets higher caliber players on both sides of the ball.
PS: Gawga finally covers the spread and beats Vandy handily (at Gawga). They are back in the title hunt and will smell blood from here on out. Only UGA injuries and GT’s defense can stop this team from being there for a spot in the NC game in the end.
GO TECH!!!

GO VANDY! LMFAO! UGAly, your schedule is weak and your team is weak and you will beat lowly Vandy, which lost to MSU let me remind you! You all complain about how easy Techs schedule is, but look at your own: Ga. Southern = sux, Central Mich = sux, SC = sux, ASU = sux, TN = sux, BAMA = LOSS, Vandy = sux! LSU = LOSS, FL = LOSS, AUB = sux, GT = LOSS. So your overated redneck team will be 8-4 and be in the Independence or Peach Bowl. As for KNOWSHOW for Heisman. Keep dreamin! You all suck azz!
