Georgia Tech needs to start fast against wounded Clemson
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:
1. What kind of team will Georgia Tech face Saturday at Clemson? There is no question that the Clemson players are going to rally around interim coach Dabo Swinney and try to find a way to salvage this season. Clemson’s excitement level at the beginning of this game will be very high. That makes it doubly important for Georgia Tech to get off to a fast start in Death Valley. If the Yellow Jackets can get up early, it will be hard for Clemson to maintain that enthusiasm. But if Clemson hangs around and has some success against the Georgia Tech defense, its confidence will grow. If Georgia Tech wins the toss, the Yellow Jackets should take the ball and go to work on offense. The point is that it’s hard to get ready for the Georgia Tech offense on a normal week. This has not been a normal week at Clemson.
2. Will Georgia look past Vanderbilt?Intentionally? No. Coach Mark Richt and the Georgia players are saying all the right things this week. Yes, they respect Vanderbilt, the team that was 5-0 before losing a tough game at Mississippi State last week. Yes, they understand that Vanderbilt is a well- coached team that usually doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. Before last week, when Vanderbilt had 10 penalties, the Commodores led the nation in fewest penalties with 16 in five games. Yes, they beat Auburn and even if the Tigers’ offense is really bad, it’s still Auburn. I just think it’s going to be hard for the Bulldogs not to think about next week’s trip to LSU and the showdown with Florida the following week in Jacksonville. These guys are human. If the Georgia defense can force a few turnovers against a struggling Vanderbilt offense (No. 117 nationally), the Dawgs will be fine. But if Georgia comes out flat, it could be a four-quarter game.
3. Has the LSU defense been exposed? Despite some significant losses in the secondary (CB Chevis Jackson, SS Craig Stelz) plus Outland Trophy winner Glenn Dorsey at DT, the Tigers were expected to have one of the best defenses in the country. But LSU’s defense was shredded last week (265 yards rushing) by Florida and now folks are taking a second look. LSU is No. 52 nationally in scoring defense (22.4 ppg). Both Auburn and Mississippi State, two of the worst offenses in the country, moved the ball pretty effectively against LSU. South Carolina doesn’t have as many weapons as Florida. It’s not even close. But QB Stephen Garcia is going to get his first start after looking good in the fourth quarter against Kentucky, which does have a good defense. Wide receiver Kenny McKinley (of Mableton) is now back from a hamstring problem and South Carolina’s offense is much better when he’s on the field.
4. Could Tennessee-Mississippi State be another 3-2 game? Tennessee is No. 108 nationally in scoring offense (17.33 ppg). Mississippi State is No. 113 (16.33 ppg). This has a chance to be one of the ugliest games since Auburn’s 3-2 win over Mississippi State on Sept. 13. Mississippi State held Vanderbilt to only 107 yards of total offense last week. Tennessee’s offensive line, which has struggled since defenses have loaded up to stop the run, needs to have a good game or a bad season on Rocky Top just might get worse.
5. Does Alabama need an impressive win against Ole Miss?: Nick Saban would jump me just for asking the question. But here is something to ponder. The Crimson Tide elevated itself to No. 2 with a very impressive win at Georgia on Sept. 27. Then came a difficult 17-14 win over Kentucky. During Alabama’s off week Texas jumped over the Tide to No. 1 after a 45-35 win over previously-No. 1 Oklahoma. My instincts tell me that Alabama is in a great position if it keeps winning. The odds are against Texas running the table. But the voting in these polls i a tricky thing, especially with Penn State and Joe Paterno lurking at No. 3. I’m just saying that it wouldn’t hurt Alabama to have another dominating performance about right now to reinforce its position.

You are right on target about Tech. They better score early and get a couple of three and outs. The thing they most certainly CANNOT do it turn the ball over early in the game. That might prove fatal.

USC Gamecock, how easily you chickens crow. Guarantee you your pullets lose against a Clemson team that is coachless. You are a shamecock and will always be a shamecock. LSU gives you your third SEC loss in that poultry processing plant you call a stadium. You are still looking up and what do you see? Georgia towering over thee.

Here are the answers to your questions.
Clemson never had a leader with Bowden so nothing will change. Tech wins by 10
Georgia won’t look ahead because they still remember getting beat by Vandy. Vandy will still give them 4 quarters though. Georgia wins by 6.
LSU’s defense is getting a lot of criticism this week. They’ll try to look fierce which will result in penalties and another loss.

Hey Lamecock, put down your corn cobb crack pipe and smell the moonshine. There will be no USC in the SEC Championship game….one’s in a different conference and the other isn’t capable. The Dawgs will whip Vandy. Clempson may very well beat the little Techheads. Bama needs a BIG win over Ole Miss to maintain there air of invincibility…but you never know. When Bama wins big, JPW plays like Joe Montana, but there are times when he plays like Hannah Montana…this weekend may be a Hannah weekend for him.

GT should tear through Clemson in the same manner they did Miss State. Clemson is a train wreck right now and be focused after all that went on.
UGA is in for a fight this weekened as Vandy usually gives them fits. They pull away in the end though and win by double figures.
LSU is a good team but not great. Their DL was average at best last week and their secondary got picked apart. The loss of Pelini shows big time.
MSU will beat UT in Knoxville on Sat. MSU is not good but UT absolutely stinks.
The good thing about UT being so bad is I dont have to worry about BAMA overlooking Ole Miss. Yes, the rebs beat UF but in the end, they are really only one game better than MSU. They are going to throw 8 in the box to stop the run but UGA did much the same as did UK and we still ranked up the running yards. Julio and McCoy should have a big day! BAMA wins easily!

**CPJ’s Tech team will be ready to play. The determination will be there and the “never quit” will be there.
The Tech defense is better than the defense that stopped Clemson last year The only question mark is how Clemson will throw. It is my bet that Clemson throws from play action with Korn because you have to respect his running ability. Also, it would not surprise me if Clemson doesn’t run some option.
Interim coach Swinney may be a lot more creative than Bowden.**

GT will have to get up big early. We need to get after Korn and force some turnovers. Our typical ground and pound gameplan will wear on them, but we need to take the emotion out of it for Clemson. If we can get up early, we’ll roll.
UGA is going to roll Vandy. I hate to say it, but it will happen. It’ll be a 14+ point victory.
LSU is very overrated. No offense and everyone gives them credit for last years D. They’re still tough at home…
UT is teetering on the edge of being a disaster. MSU is a good team…much better than the team we slaughtered on the Flats. This game is a coin flip in my mind.
Bama is the cream of the crop…they could and should win out.

The uga folks are out trying to beat down a proud USC GAMECOCK, well guys it’s not going to happen. USC beat themselves against uga and all of you know it. USC is still in the fight because uga, vandy and fl will all lose more games. vandy and uga have to lose 2 more games each which is very likely to happen which means USC will rise - by winning out. If lsu beats USC then game over for USC and then it will all be about how good a record they can build and which bowl gets them. If USC beats lsu, all bets are off boys and all of you know it. BTW, you clemson pukes are getting what you deserves and you can bet that USC fans are all GT fans too this weekend. GO USC beat lsu on GAMECOCK SATURDAY in Columbia!

The two best coaches in the country won’t lose Saturday.
Paul and Bobby Johnson. Even though UGAg as lucky as winning the PowerBall last year in Nashville…the morons will look past the team that came into their house last time and beat them. Thugs ain’t too smart.
Vandy 24, Ugag 21
GT 41 Clempson 17 Thanks for the “advice” there Tony, we’ll all be holding our breath on that coin toss.
Let’s watch that Missy St. game over UT. They will expose Tenn. as the worst team in the over rated SEC, or would that be Awbarn. Hmmmmm, by the way were either of those two teams ranked by the experts this year?

Tony, you mentioned Auburn in 3 of your 5 points, and they aren’t even playing this week! Very strange…
Just to show that the Auburn faithful do still have a sense of humor about this season, I received this in an email from some fellow alums:
Severe Weather Alert for Auburn
From The National Weather Service:
In the event of a tornado warning, the National Weather Service advises all Auburn residents to take immediate shelter in Jordan-Hare Stadium. A touchdown is highly unlikely to occur there.
Thank you for your cooperation.

It is hilarious to watch Miss St be so competitive in the sec when they got run off the field at Ga Tech 38-7. They barely lose to auBARN 3-2, to lswho by 10 and then beat Vandy straight up. It is best for all the sec teams to stay in conference where they are competitive and not get out of conference where they get esposed. Bottom line, the sec is as mediocre as Chan Gailey….thank God and Greyhound that he is gone Forever.

I don’t know Tony. Garnder Webb only had a week to prepare for Georgia Tech and they did alright. They were coming off a tough loss to Charleston Southern too, who by the way scored more points against them than Georgia Tech did.

Ramble On…TN was picked to be know better than 3rd in the SEC East this year.
With all the talent in the ACC (VA, NC State, Duke) and GT actually having a decent season for once (I realize you have not been there for a longtime) that makes the ACC very dominant. Just don’t choke like GA Tech has done in years past!

Georgia Tech will win. Clemson players don’t have any heart. They are not gonna get better this week because Bowden isn’t there.
Georgia will definitely not overlook Vandy. Vandy is resume having the record it usually has.
Yes, LSU defensive has been exposed. I was worried about their defense after they played Auburn unitl I realize how bad Auburn’s offensive line was and Florida eased my worries about playing them in Baton Rouge. Another plus, is Bama’s offensive line is our strength.
Tennesse wins this one.
Bama will be very impressive in this one. I just want us to be impressive against LSU, kick Auburns a* up and down the field and beat Florida handily in the SEC title so we can take on the Big 12 and show everyone the SEC,is no doubt, the best conference in the land.

“Garnder Webb only had a week to prepare for Georgia Tech and they did alright.”
Tech was playing 3rd/4th string QBs the entire game, not to mention those QBs were not the type of QBs that work in a triple-option system. That’s why G-W did alright. And realistically, the 3rd string QB won 10 - 0 if you take away the TD handed to the team by a bad leaping call.
“even if the Tigers’ offense is really bad, it’s still Auburn”
Wrong. This is just another example of SEC bias in the southeastern media, especially in the AJC. Auburn is horribly overrated this year and it’s about time they dropped out of the polls. I mean really, 3-2? Against “Mighty Miss State?” That’s a BASEBALL score. Oh, but it’s excusable because the SEC is so amazing.

I believe TECH is in good shape going in to Clemmons. TECH wins but it’s hard to say by how much, probably 10 or less. Ugag can’t/won’t overlook Vandy b/c the next 2 weeks will mean nothing if the pups lose this week. Ugag by 9. I’ve said for weeks that LSwho and just about the whole SEC are overated. This week will tell the tale on USC and LSwho. I think the tiggers win by 6. I hope UT beats MSU but I’m not sure they can beat anyone at this point. This game will double the Auburn/MSU score. UT 6 MSU 4. Bama will roll the Rebs. The Tide and the Gators are way better than everyone else in the SEC. Tony you made apoint of the SEC’s highly ranked defenses in a column earlier. There is a simple reason - other than Florida, Bama, and Ugag the rest of the offenses in the that league are putrid.

Good analysis, Doctor Barnhart! You need to replace Holtz on ESPN.
Taking off my gold-colored glasses, I expect a war in Death Valley. Clemson is seeking redemption.
I have to believe that UGA inflicts payback on Vanderbilt. The Dawgs will likely lose again - but not to the Commodores.
In college football, anything can happen on a particular Saturday. LSU’s ‘D’ will not look that porous again - at least not this week. (Unfortunately, they don’t have a lot of practice left before a potent UGA offense comes to town.)
MSU will beat UT. Tennessee is a lot like Clemson. Maybe they should do what the Tigers did.
Saban is evil incarnate - but he knows how to prepare a team and play poll politics. There are many weeks left to make poll statements.

UF was a better team last week. They had the upset loss to Ole P** the week earlier and the comments from RJF didn’t help the situation. As for our defense being exposed maybe, but you also have to look at how young our secondary and linebackers are. Plus the loss of Bo dosen’t help things much. They will get things turned around this week against the gamecocks.
I am not here saying we will win the rest of our games b/c if you ask me we will still lose at least 1 maybe 2 more. There is always that let down the next year after a team wins the NC.
UGA better hope that their aren’t looking ahead b/c Vandy is a good team this year.

Clemson vs. G-Tech…who cares? Georgia will crush Vandy! In addition to its defensive issues, LSU has a QB problem. It’s more likey that Hatch will find the golden plates in the bayou before the QB issue is resolved. Lee is the answer, but they’re a couple of years away from true contention. Mississippi St. vs UT…maybe it’ll be a 3-2 final or 2-0. Right now, the only team in the country that could possibly run the table is Alabama, but don’t forget the SEC Championship.

GW is past. We won. We have moved on. Apparently UGA fans haven’t. 3rd string QB, many players injured and out, 3 turnovers. Any other team (incl UGA) would have lost the game. I’ve been to 3 GT games and can tell you this team and coach have got it. And, I expect the UGA fans really know this but won’t admit it. We care about only one team this week and that is Clemson. The downhill slide continues for Tech. Clempson is reenergized by the Bowden departure. Clempson takes Tech by 17.
Unfortunately for Vandy, the game is between the hedges. UGA by 21.
LSU rebounds and stuffs USC. The Tigers are still loaded with talent. As mentioned, USC’s offense isn’t the same as UF’s (neither is their Defense).
Miss State will take down the Vols. This is what would have happened with the Tech-Clempson game had Bowden not been forced out. The implosion is continuing in Knoxville and will continue until the end of the year or until Phil is gone. Too bad for Tech that Clempson didn’t wait until the end of the year.
Alabama doesn’t NEED it, but they will GET it. Mizzou will take down Texas for them this week. Alabama’s road to Atlanta is set. Unfortunately for them, they will have to either beat UF or UGA (again) in the SEC championship game to get to the NC game. Either task will be a tough one to accomplish.

Tech will face a team riding too much emotion. The whole first half of the season has been rough, and the coaching change will rally the troops for about the first 5 minutes. When Tech gets it’s first lead then stops Clemson from answering, the balloon with deflate fast. (GT 27 - CLemson 10)
No, but UGA will have it’s usual sluggish start, Vandy stays in it til the 3rd qtr, when UGA starts pulling too far away and seals the deal early in the 4th.
Yes, I’ve said many times LSU is overrated.
It won’t be 3-2 but it will be a battle, lol, (MS ST 20 - UT 17)
No, just a win at this point. things will fall into place if they can win out.

If Tech gets after Clemson’s @$$ early and often, it will be ugly. This game could be over by the end of the first quarter (e.g., 14-0, 14-3, etc.) IF they do. I wonder if letting Clemson take the ball first, and forcing a quick 3-and-out, would be a better option—naw, too risky. Take the ball first and get some quick points with the Perfect Option.
If Clemson brings a decent game, expect another Duke where it’s close until Budweiser, then Tech pulls away with our superior conditioning.
UGA beats Vandy, but take Vandy and the 15. Naw. Taking the points didn’t work for Tech-Duke. UGA wins in a romp.
Missy State beats the Vols in a close one and gives Tech’s SoS a kick in the pants (although Tennessee won’t be doing their share for Tech throughout the rest of the season).
Bama needs to whip Ole Miss—if they can, harder than it will look—to get style points to get the pollsters to forget about the Big 10.

Tech Clemson is going to be a game of coaching. CPJ has controlled the game film left his quarterbacks in the lockeroom and almost lost a game trying to hide what he has in store for Clemson. This was before Bowden was fired, now he has a bunch of cocky individuals who have never been that discipline to work his game plan against with an undermanned coaching staff. I truly think we are looking at a blow out for Tech. This will be one of Tech’s finest hours.

I agree with Tony as I posted earlier that the Jackets need to score early to take the edge of Clemson’s energy. Receiving the kick at the start of the game is a good idea, but our D is fine so it’s not essential.
Georgia Tech 28 Clemson 13
The Dawgs will want payback after their near loss to Vandy last year, so they will be ready.
* Georgia 24 Vanderbilt 14*
The Gamecocks upset LSU at home.
South Carolina 21 LSU 14
The Vols will hold off the other Bulldogs at home in a close one.

1- Trauma can bring a team together, or it can further divide a team. I feel that Clemson will come out angry and if their new coach can foster an “us against the world” mentality the Tigers will be very dangerous. They haven’t lacked talent, just focus. I disagree with Tony on the necessity of Tech scoring early. Tech has and excellent defense that hits people in the mouth. IMO Tech’s defense is better than their offense. If I were Tech’s coach I would elect to kick if I won the toss and let My defense go to work. Clemson will be sky high so nothing like a three and out to bring them back down to earth. 2- Who are You kidding Tony? Look at the way Vandy has played UGA for the last three years. Being overlooked has nothing to do with it. Vandy is what it has always been. A smart team that is well coached and makes few mistakes. Their first 22 on the depth chart could probably make any other team in the country, but they have little depth. They will play hard and keep it close untill the second half, hell, the final score may be close. Why is it that when a team like Vandy gets a win or keeps it close everybody says the were overlooked? How about saying that their coaching staff came up with a good game plan and stuck to it. You could also say that their guys played hard, played smart, and left it all on the field. Vandy is five and one, did all five of those teams overlook them? 3- SOS could very well win this one. If You can’t stop Missy St how good could Your D be? I think the Gamecock’s D may be better than LSU’s. 4- I don’t see 3-2 here. UT should win going away, if not then Fulmer may not make the Bama game.5- Bama should concentrate on winning the game. If they don’t this could be a “trap” game for the Tide. A coach can’t start worrying about polls this early, just win the game and let the polls take care of themselves.

In order for Clemson to come out and play with fire and passion for the new coach, they have to have the fire and passion instilled in them before the season started. It will be more of the same for Clem—-Tech big.
Uga has won 12 out of the last 14 games with Vandy. Yes the last two years have been wars, thanks to Bobby Johnson. UGA will go out in a business like manner and take care of business. CMR is bulding the emotion slowly and surely like he did last year. No emotion needed to beat Vandy. UGA wins—but take the points.
USC has a chance to make a statement in a good way with a win over LSU. At this time last year the gamecocks were 5-2 and sliding fast due to a lot of injuries on the defense and mediocre qb play. I don’t care who wins, I just want the gamecocks to physically and emotionally beat up the Tigers and have them down when we go to Baton Rouge. I still can’t pull for SOS—so LSU in a close one.
UT-MSU—How about 6-5 UT?
Which BAMA team will show up? Which Ole Miss team will show? Which officiating crew will show up? This is the statement game for Bama. Was the Fla game for OM a case of a blind hog finding an acorn? Too close to call, but Bama rarely loses in Tuscaloosa.

I’ve liked Paul johnson since his 1st press conference after being named GT coach. He’s a real coach, from the old school who means business. His body language and impatience for mediocre performance are enlightening. He reminds me of Woody Hayes and I should know growing up in Ohio. Woody was blowing out a team and scored a TD and went for 2 points. After the game, they asked him why he went for 2 being up already by so many points. His reply? ‘Because I couldn’t go for 3!’

Ramble on and SECSUCK, I’ll be more than glad to bet you on the outcome of this year’s UGA/Tech game. I can also refresh your delusional memory banks regarding the series history since 1990(the last time Tech beat UGA with eligible players).
I’ll also be here Monday morning after UGA wipes the rug with Vandy. I’ll also remind you that you scored 10 points and were outgained by GW, a former junior college. You lucked out in the fact that Bowwow bowden pulled the plug and left clempson in disarray or you had a loss coming. Now, even Tech might be capable of beating them.
And I know how to spell, it’s jackettes

Does Barnhart EVER comment on his own blog?
Can’t wait for “Chalk’s” picks tomorrow. This is what it’ll probably look like:
FSU at NCSU: FSU favored big and Tony loves ‘em.
Wake at Md: He’ll mention something about if Wake turns it over this will be close. He’ll pick the favored Wake Forest.
GT at Clemson: He’ll repeat how GT needs to get off to a fast start and if they don’t, Clemson could win the game. However, this will be his upset pick as he’ll end up picking GT. (2 point spread)
Vandy at Georgia: Something about if Georgia keeps getting penalized and doesn’t protect the ball…..he’ll end up picking Georgia.
Ole Miss at Bama: Bama needs a statement and Ole Miss is dangerous…blah, blah, blah…. He’ll pick Bama.
Arkansas at Kentucky: He’ll pick the favored Wildcats.
MSU at UT: Something about Fulmer’s back is to the wall…. He’ll pick the favored Volunteers.
LSU at SC: LSU got exposed, I guess, and Spurrier has regained some of his genius…..blah, blah….LSU will be his pick. (small chance he picks SC)
Just wait. Nothing but favorites from “Chalk.”

But don’t kid yourself, UGAg starts their 3rd string QB, and they lose to those Power Houses GSU, and Central Mich.
What NCAA division are they in?

Stingdoc,
Typical Tech garbage spewing from your piehole. I’m married with 3 children while you go to your engineering job and then go home and play space invaders all night while dreaming of actually getting to kiss a girl.
go fix my computer, NERD. I live in the house in the cul-de-sac(not a trailer idiot).
Ramble On: Which ACC team has to win 7 games in order to qualify for a bowl because they have played 2 Div 1-AA schools this year?? That would be Tech

DawginLex… Class will be dismissed when you answer your own question correctly.
And the answer is… Clemson, Florida State, and Georgia Tech
And still all 3 have just as tough OOC schedule as most of the SEC

No one is giving Clemson a shot at winning this game except Tiger Nation. Be careful on this one bubble bees… May be a repeat of 06. Dawgs win big over Vandy, Fulmer eats opposing teams qtr back and wins game, LSU’s D will be back on track, and Ole miss falls to Bama late in the game.

TommyP:
LOL!
But check the current line on the Tech game. Opening line was Clemson minus 2. Current line is Clemson PLUS 2. Tech is now the favorite, even in 75 Degrees and Sunny Valley.
Methinks SC over LSU will be his upset pick, just to be an SECE homer.

GT cleans house in Clemson. The tigers will continue to take cat naps on Saturdays. It doesn’t matter who is coaching. GT 31 CU 17
Vandy gives UGAg a close game, but the mutts wins in a close one. UGAg looked lethargic last week against Phil’s Phatties, and the streak continues. UGAg 24 VU 21
usc wins at home vs LSU. I think this is a breakout game for the lamecocks. usc 28 LSU 17
I’d love for Sly to take it to fat Phil and the Vols. However, I’ll give the edge to UT at home. MSU 7 UT 17
Alabama doesn’t need an impressive win…they just need to keep the w’s rolling in. Remember how OSU was the toast of the big 11 while winning all those ugly games the past few years. Texas won’t survive it’s schedule the rest of the way. The question is will Alabama be able to keep winning and not have a let down. Tough test this weekend, but Bama Wins at home. Ole Miss 24 UA 31

The Ole Miss game should be interesting. They lost to South Carolina, which makes them dangerous to the next opponent. They are just the no see em team that could knock out a perfect season for somebody.

Note to Ramble On:
Logan Gray is UGAs 3rd team qb. He was one of the top three qbs out of high school two years ago, a five star qb and could beat GSU and CMich. I have heard he can count to four and I would take him as qb against a bunch of North Avenue Tradeschool Nerds and beat you for the eight time in a row. See ya Thanksgiving, Turkey.

I am amazed that so many of you are picking USC to beat lsu cuz none of you give the C0CKS any respect; note to the world….this will be a breakout game for USC on national TV. USC will be ranked and lsu will fall below #20 or out all together. Tony B is a complete homeboy for uga and awbarn; I have seen that for years so the rest of you need to get used to it.
Tenn loses to MSU; Vandy beats uga; GT beats clempson.
Oh yeah, USC is rolling on the floor laughing at clempson folks because all of us remember their chest beating this past summer…yeah, that ACC championship and national championship could still happen…right?…yeah, in your dreams you pukes.
Go USC roll over lsu on GAMECOCK SATURDAY in COLUMBIA! GO C0CKS!

Well, I’m worried about Clemson. We have trouble with a running QB, especially when they are quick like Korn.
The O needs to score and keep the ball, that is the best way to defend Korn.

Will Alabama look past Ole Miss? If Tide comes out flat, it could be their first loss as the Gators found out a few weeks ago.Georgia should easily win the SEC east and face LSU in the SEC Championship,- based on Alabama always falling apart at season’s end, similar to Michigan State.

WOW! Clemson’s James Davis with tears streaming down his face on ESPN Thursday Night Football. If the Tigers are that emotional about losing their coach, the Yellow Jackets had REALLY better be fired up and ready to play, because it looks like Clemson will be. Harper sounded like a jerk, but he won’t be the starting QB. I am concerned.
