Dawgs won’t beat Florida, LSU unless they fix penalty problem
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For the second time this year (Sept. 27 was the first), we’ve had a “Shakeout Saturday” that turned the national championship race upside down. And to think, the first BCS standings of the season don’t come out until Sunday!
Here are just five things we learned over the weekend:
1. Georgia won’t beat LSU or Florida unless it fixes penalty problem: I can’t prove it but I believe Georgia’s penalty problems are making it tough for the pollsters to show them a lot of love. Let’s look at the facts. Statistically, Georgia dominated Saturday’s game with Tennessee. But mistakes and penalties allowed Tennessee, a team that is really struggling, to stay close. Georgia had 11 penalties in this game and now leads the nation with 63 in six games. I think the pollsters are looking at Georgia as a good team but not a great team because it makes too many mistakes and can’t put a team away. Really good teams make statements when they play. Florida, for example, made an emphatic statement Saturday night when it beat LSU. Georgia will not be able to have that statement game until it cuts down on the penalties and other mental errors. And frankly, it really doesn’t matter what the pollsters think about Georgia because the Bulldogs are not going to beat LSU or Florida if they don’t get this corrected.
2. Alabama will get its chance to be No. 1: I know Crimson Tide fans are mad today because Texas jumped over them in the polls after that impressive 45-35 win over Oklahoma which, for my money, may be the Longhorns’ biggest regular-season win the Mack Brown era. But sit tight, Bama faithful. Keep winning and you’ll get there. Why? Look at the rest of the Texas schedule starting this Saturday at home against a Missouri (5-1) team that now has its backs to the wall. No. 8 Oklahoma State (6-0), the team that beat Missouri, comes to Austin the following week. On Nov. 1 Texas goes to No. 7 Texas Tech (6-0). If the Longhorns survive that three-game gauntlet then there is a trap game at No. 16 Kansas on Nov. 15. And if Texas gets through all that undefeated it will probably have t play Missouri again in the Big 12 championship. It’s hard to see the ‘Horns going through that undefeated.
3. Florida found its identity Saturday night: If your team plays Florida in the coming weeks, what happened Saturday night at The Swamp should concern you. Until the 51-21 win over LSU, Florida was just a collection of very good players who couldn’t figure out what everybody was supposed to do. Now they know. In the final quarter of the Oct. 4 game with Arkansas Florida finally started using quarterback Tim Tebow not as their primary weapon, but as the man who can distribute the ball to a variety of playmakers that nobody can catch. Florida, my friends, ran for 265 yards against the best defensive line in the country (even though Ricky Jean-Francois was out with an injury). Florida’s identity from this point forward will be as a team with a big play offense with a defense that is getting better each week. The Gators were scary good Saturday night.
4. You’ve got to have a QB to win on the road—or anywhere, for that matter: Tennessee, LSU, and Clemson all lost on the road during the weekend. What do they all have in common? All are struggling with quarterback play. When you go on the road the quarterback has to manage the game against a hostile crowd and needs to make enough plays to give you a chance to win. Auburn lost at home to a bad Arkansas team Auburn but the problem was the same—quarterback. Tennessee, and LSU really don’t have that many options. Clemson is going to go with redshirt freshman Willy Korn against Georgia Tech after watching Cullen Harper struggle in the first half of the season. Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville is talking about taking a redshirt off freshman Barrett Trotter because things have gotten so bad. The game has evolved to the point where you can’t be average at the quarterback position and get by any more. The defenses are just too good. And while we’re on the subject: Why are there so many great quarterbacks in the Big 12 and a dearth of top level quarterbacks in the SEC? I don’t know the answer. I’m asking.
5. Defense gives South Carolina a shot at LSU: The headlines in Gamecock Country this week will be dominated by the fact that Stephen Garcia, the star-crossed quarterback, will finally get his first start for head coach Steve Spurrier. But the thing that gives South Carolina a shot in Saturday’s game with LSU is a defense that is ranked No. 3 in the nation (240.86 yards per game). Kentucky converted only one of 16 third down attempts in Saturday’s 24-17 win by South Carolina. Florida committed everything it had on defense to making sure that LSU running back Charles Scott did not beat them. Scott, the league’s leading rusher, had only 35 yards on 12 carries. Expect South Carolina to do the same and put QB Jarrett Lee into long yardage situations. Florida did that and made Lee look like a freshman quarterback again.

Tony, you ahould add a #6 to your list of things learned this weekend. YOU don’t know Penn State. Penn State is a strong #3 and will gladly take over the top spot once Texas and Alabama lose in the next couple of weeks. Personally, I’d rather see them at #2 going into the National Championship game…they do better when they have to prove themselves to the world. Just ask prior Heisman Trophy winners Hershel Walker and Vinny Testaverde. WE ARE…PENN STATE!!

Maybe QBs go to Big XII teams because they have all opened up their offenses and spread the field. You know, that offense that just won’t work against SEC defenses. Oops, UF scored 51 on a pretty good SEC defense. Maybe those offenses work just fine, thank you very much. Maybe the SEC fans who gloat so much about their defenses should open their eyes and realize that the grinding I back offenses of the past are…in the past (until the cycle swings back again). maybe AU should have given this whole thing more time than looking like a spoiled kid who wanted his ice cream NOW!

As a Bama fan, Tony, we’re not ALL upset with Texas jumping us in the polls. After watching Texas and Florida play, WOW!!! Texas could have beaten some NFL teams Saturday afternoon. We’re only half way through the season. I want to be #1 in January, not October. We just need to focus on beating Ole Miss. This game has concerned me all year because you never know which Ole Miss team will show up.

AL fans have no reason to be mad - you do not rise to #1 if you do not play. Nothing against Bama, it’s not their fault they had an open week the same time the #1, #3, and #4 teams lost - TX deserves to be #1, for now!
And Stafford, here’s a clue - LOOK before you throw the &*&%^# ball - that “the defensive end was supposed to rush and he didn’t”and “the DB just made a great play” BS does not pass for much!
Looks like NEXT year will be the Dawgs year since both #24, #7 and the whole offensive line will be returning - if they cna find a killer instinct without all the penalties!

I’m not at all upset Texas jumped Alabama to take the top spot. If I had my druthers, Alabama would only move to #2 after (not to get too far ahead of myself) the SEC Championship game. Being the top dog is not a blessing for teams…

At least we have the Falcons.
Football is a game of inches and that’s what the AU offense gives us- inches.
Trotter’s pregame prayer includes, “lord please don’t include me in this!!
It’s gotten so bad at AU. The marching band formed a noose at halftime.
The only way the AU offense can gain any yards is to run the game film backwards.

The best teams right now? Florida, Alabama, Texas, and Penn State. There’s no way that TX can survive their murderous schedule (please UGA fans, if you want to look at a tough schedule, look at what Texas is up against). My bet for the NC game in Miami: Alabama & Penn State.

Mike, all the qb’s are not in the big XII..maybe you should look at the NFL rosters..they have the overall best this year. thats true..but the reason their numbers are so inflated is because the big XII defenses look terrible and the top big XII teams have only played ONE tough game so far..which is why Chase Daniel threw 3 interceptions when he finally had some pressure against a bad oklahoma st defense..The texas/oklahoma game has receivers running wide open all over the field..you dont have that in SEC games… just spreading the field playing touch football is not always the answer..ask Tebow when he played Georgia last year..chase daniel and colt mccoy would have been carried out on a stretcher

Hold your horses partner!
I love that Texas Team but neither Texas or Oklahoma have SEC caliber Defenses - and that’s a fact.
Bama is the real deal but as we saw last week against KY, had a Major Mental Meltdown and could easily have lost that game. There are 4 or 5 teams left on Bama’s regular season schedule that could upset them.
Not likely? Well, who thought Ole Miss would beat UF and make Tebow Cry (again)!?

To the contrary, as a Bama fan, I wish we were ranked fourth or fifth right now. We have a very young team that might not be able to handle the pressure and notoriety of being number one this early in the season. Plus, we are a year or two ahead of schedule so we’re just happy to be 6-0 regardless of our ranking.
Jean-Francois’ absence made things a lot easier for Florida’s run game which opened up the passing game. Hopefully, UF will win out. Bama will win out and we will meet them in the SECCG. It’s the best case scenario for both of us. Beating Georgia again will do nothing for us in the computer polls.

Most of the Bama fans that I know aren’t upset. You must remember that we’ve been here before. A number 1 ranking only counts when the season ends. I’d be happy to see the Crimson Tide sit at the number 2 spot until the big game in Miami. Alabama has to survive a lot of games yet to get there. Best to take them one at a time and not get caught up in rankings.
Alabama vs. Penn State?
Wow! That would be a classic game! I’ve always had a lot of respect for the Penn State football program.
But.. like I said before — one game at a time. Looking past the Hotty Toddys would be foolish. They have already proved that they can play with anybody.

It was great to see Florida finally play well offensively, but lets put things in some perspective for the Florida/Georgia watch:
1) This LSU defense is not the same defense they have had the last two years. They gave up 24 to Miss St. for gods sake.
2) We shut LSU’s running game down. But if LSU’s receivers could catch, the game would have been closer.
3) Georgia dominated Tennessee in a much more demonstrative fashion than we (Florida) did. We didn’t even outgain Tennessee. Fulmer kept kicking the ball to Brandon James, Richt isn’t that stupid.
4) Georgia has a better running game than LSU and Stafford is a much better QB than the two headed LSU QB. But he must stop turning the ball over in the red-zone.
I’m actually salivating at the thought of the Florida/Georgia game. I think both will have one loss and be playhing for SEC east title and national championship hopes. What else could you want?

Um, did Big Ton’ actually watch the game? I don’t recall a single instance when a Georgia penalty entirely kept the Dawgs from doing what they wanted. Penalties didn’t hurt us at all on defense, and were kept to mostly false start types on offense (which we got through anyway). Then there was an intentional delay-of-game for an easier FG. What the heck is Barnhart even talking about?
Compare that to Tennessee’s penalties, which played a huge part in one of Georgia’s TD drives and should have set the Dawgs up for another one (thanks, Penn Wagers).
But hey, as long as Tony sticks to a meme and slams our head against it a billion times, it must be true. Didja know that TROY RACKED UP ALMOST 500 YAAAAAAAAAARDS?????? I’m sure that will certainly spell doom for Georgia against Central Michigan, and mean that Auburn will be an offensive juggernaut for years to come!

Gator Nation,
Your analysis is the most level headed of any I have seen on the internet or in print, period. You know your football!
Let me say this about the Gators. They know how to play a BIG game! Say what you want about LSU’s shortcomings, the Gators made the plays when they needed to.
Georgia needs to find some consistency along the O line. I believe they will over the next two games, barring any more injuries.

Big Tone,
Well said about my Dawgs. A very frustrating Sat afternoon watching what should have been a blowout turn into a close game. As a matter of fact, I predicted that type of game on Friday. I think I called it a penalty-filed fiasco. Anyways, I was glad we won and happy we were still alive in the SEC East race. Then the FLA/LSU game started and my happiness turned to sadness. The Gators looked good in every aspect and they are truely loaded and looked hard to beat. Their only enemy is their own coach Urban Myer who I think is trying to turn T-Bo into something he’s not. A prototype NFL passer. Anyways, we will be big underdogs in the GA-FLA game this year.

Tony with all due respect, I think UGA should be worried about Vandy this week and not look ahead to LSU or FLA.
The last 2 years Vandy has showed that it’s more than capable of beating UGA.
As a UGA fan, I don’t care about beating LSU or FLA right now, I care about beating Vandy, the team they’ve gotta play this week!
Take care of business one game at a time is the only thing that may help UGA save this season that started with such lofty expectations.

Let’s just sum it up liek this. College Football is really about to get interesting. The College Football “Playoffs” are under way. Mr. College Football (I love you on CSS) but I’m concerned there is no emntion of Penn State. Yes the BIg 10 is weak but they look like the best team in that conference and Ohio State will give them trouble but Joe Pa is on a mission. Let’s face it Texas and Bama will lose before the month is over and we are gonna be looking at 1 loss central going into Novemeber. One last week on this stuff until the BCS polss come out, kinda interesting to see USC slide up so far but anyway that’s the nature of the beast. Georgia continuing to fly under the radar and I love it. Theoffensiove line is now an issue. They will will get by Vandy on a very low key way just to get out healthy beofre the tangle in the bayou and the cocktail party. Good job otherwise Tony!!

Tony, you picked 3 out of 10 games correctly last week?!?! Why don’t you admit that you don’t have a CLUE?? The rankings are voted on by a bunch of idiots just like you, that think they know who is good and who isn’t, and who will win and who won’t. The problem is, they don’t have a clue and you don’t have a clue. So why don’t you admit it, and realize that we need a 16 team playoff, where the slots in the playoff are earned ON THE FIELD, and that the national championship is earned ON THE FIELD, and not by some idiots like yourself who don’t have a CLUE? Look at the rankings now, and at the first of the year. The rankings were wrong then and are wrong now. We need to get opinions out of football and let the results ON THE FIELD count. You are the Chan Gailey of football prognosticators, and Thank God and Greyhound that Chan Gailey is GONE FOREVER. Maybe you should join him.

My 2 cents worth:
The Gators are the best team in the SEC East. Good time for a bye week and they will slaughter UK in Lexington. No hope for my cats.
UGAg better take it one game at a time and not start looking ahead to the cocktail party. They need to get their penalties under control…ouch. Can’t afford to overlook Vandy and better watch out for a ticked off LSU team in Death Valley in 2 weeks.
USC is flying under the radar and could be back in the thick of it if they beat LSU this weekend. Huge game for them in Columbia this weekend.
Alabama has the ability to win the rest of the games on their schedule. Question is…will they. They look great in the big games, but flat in some others (Tulane, UK). And like UGAg…I don’t think they can afford to take the game vs. LSU in Death Valley for granted.

No argument that penalties and miscues are killers so far , but this dramatic declaration about ranking highest (or lowest depending on how you look at it) is a bit overdone. USC average more yard per game in penalties than Georgia. The fact is, several top teams are within a few penalties per game of Georgia and rank 100th or more including USC, OK, and FL.

Tony,
Get out of New York and watching games that are spoon fed to the networks and get your southern arse back in Athens and watch the game first hand. Yes UGA had 11 penalties but only one was a personal foul and that was on a kick return. The others were small and did not seem to slow us down. No pass interference, no roughing the passer and one incidental personal foul. At this point I must offer a congratulations to Penn Wagers and his crew for calling a game without calling multiple personal fouls against UGA. CMR has been vocal about correcting the penalties and I think the refs have finally accepted
his philosophy that he is trying to correct the problem. Personally, I think the problem started with the celebration at fla. After that game we were penalized 104 times and our opponents were penalized 62 times.
UGA is in a better position after the UT game this year than we were after the UT game last year. I think you will see a business type approach to Vandy. CMR will get the team properly prepared each week to reach their goals.
After going 3-7 last week Tony, you probably shouldn’t try to look too far into the future to proclaim the best team in the SEC. Let it play out and you can write your headlines Dec 7.

Fact: The voters love tradition. UA has won 1 big game and they go from unranked to #2 and are almost handed the #1 spot without breaking a sweat.
Yes, I say 1 big game because the win over Clemson looks weaker and weaker. They were exposed in Kentucky (who lost to USC)and I think they are in for a rude awakening down the stretch. I gaurantee 3 losses for UA down the stretch.
Other teams spend the entire season proving themselves week after week only to get denied the chance at a NC because the media doesn’t respect their program. UA wins 1 big game and they get the red carpet treatment straight to the top. It’s total BS!

Gator Nation…. well thought out post. I think you gave the most sound description of anyone. With that said Florida has put things together and that is scary. I thought the first halves of the two games Fla/LSU and Ga/Tenn were a little similar in nature and oddly enough the same score at half 20-7. Then Fla took advantage of the situations and went out and pummled LSU. It looked like Georgia was running in the sand against Tenn all day and they seem to make us look that way just like SC does. I think our expectations haven’t come through. Areas of growth haven’t matured and we are dealing with a lot of key injuries. It was about this time last year we started putting things together and maybe the 17 play 11 minute drive was our fumble recovery against Vandy of last year. I am not so sure it is since our injuries are really in vital places and we are getting no rush from our defensive line. This is making the secondary look vulnerable. A win against Tenn is always a good thing but most will admit we left way too many points on the field for a multitude of reasons. At this point much work is still left to be done and much improvement is still needed. God Bless and Go Dawgs!

1. Did you even watch this game Tony? Penalties didn’t have a single thing to do with why Tennessee stayed in the game. Lack of execution in the red zone is why Tennessee stayed in the game. We couldn’t run the ball and those fade passes were a disaster. Other than that there were actually alot of positives in that game. We moved the ball virtually at will against a very solid defense. It is certainly not surprising that most think we don’t have a prayer against Florida and LSU, but at least come up with a valid reason.
This is a waste of time because Alabama will trip up. SEC Champion? Perhaps. National Champion? Not happening. The SEC champion will have multiple losses this year whoever it is. Mark it down.
Or maybe LSU wasn’t all that great to begin with? After all, who had they really played? It was an impressive win for Florida no doubt and but I’m not quite ready to drink the media kool aid and declare them invincible: Florida is unstoppable. Florida has too much speed. Florida has its ticket punched to the SECCG. Blah, blah, blah. Whatever. I have no problem with them hearing how great they are over the next few weeks while nobody talks about Georgia. Works for me…
4. The same reason there are so many good defenses in the SEC and so few in the Big 12.

78 Dawg,
You are a complete moron! No other successful team has ever been sanctioned as bad as alabama. If you lose recruits then guess what you lose more recruits and there goes your depth and talent.
Yes Bama lost to AU 6 times so what! Who cares? AU had a 9 loss streak against Bama and they recovered over the years. Bama is now rising back to the challenge and will soon be in the running for the NC every year.
First off I didnt think alabama would do as well as they have and although I love my team I don’t see them going thru the rest of the year without a scratch.
Florida will beat UGA and then Alabama or LSU will play florida for SEC. I believe Bama can beat LSU but it wont be a gimme.
And by the way who is Georgia Tech? Nobody!
Saturdays games
UGA 31 vs. Vandy 17

4 First, IF UT a QB and an offense that could put up 30 plus every time out, they could be 6-0…IF a frog had wings…Hello Mr. Moreno, meet Mr. Berry. Y’all notice CMR scooping up Moreno after that get together..? Going forward……don’t know what got into UF this weekend, or should I say, what happened to LSU. Nope, this isn’t LSU of 2007. Been saying that all along. They’re good but won’t be good enough, although it may still be a tough task at LSU for UGA. The Party is shaping up to be a great game for us that will have nobody to pull for or against. This one should be under the lights, but isn’t there a deal where the two programs involved play mid to late afternoon so as to try and keep alcohol related fanfare restricted to some degree..? BTW, Look where OK ST is today vs 2007…

1- Penalties come with inexperenced players. I am more worried about losing another veteran O lineman Saturday than I am about UGA’s penalties. 2- Bama will get it’s shot. UF exposed LSU, who really hadn’t played a strong team, and Auburn’s program is in big trouble. If Tubbs can get an offense to run on eight cylinders AU has a chance, but I don’t see a QB or much of a game plan there that will win SEC games for AU. 3- UF played the way the should in the swamp. 4- There are too many new QBs in the SEC. Let’s take a look, UT, S Carolina, Auburn, Kentucky all have new QBs and all have struggled offensively, even LSU struggled in the Swamp. Bama, UF, and UGA all return starters, and are leading their divisions, UGA and UF being tied with Vandy for the east. 5- This game depends on the QBs, both defenses make a team pay for it’s mistakes. Has SOS {finally} found his quarterback? If Garcia plays within himself and doesn’t make turnovers USCe has a very good chance in this game, and against the Gators.

You need to get out more often. You must be from Georgia, there is a world outside the south. Florida looked great last Saturday, but don’t forget Old Miss. Alabama looked great against Georgia but Kentucky took them the distance. We’ll have to see. Until Texas gets beat they belong in #1, Bama deserves the #2. Florida is a good top #10, if they handle Georgia, than maybe better, and I think they will beat Georgia.

Florida vs LSU
LSU is much better than they were sat. and Florida isn’t quite as good as they looked. Florida and LSU are a very even match. IF florida had an off day like LSU then the roles would very easily been reversed.
Penn State is awesome, Texas is awesome, Bama is getting there. Penn is very dominating but only has 1 tough game IMO for the remainder of the season.
The SEC and Big 12 are very close right now. The Big 10 has only 1 powerhouse which is Penn. The Pac 10 is the same way with USC. Penn is better than USC, Penn is slightly better than Texas. Oklahoma is not as good as they should be. Florida slightly overrated, Bama slightly overrated. LSU much better than shown and USC and UGA way overrated now. USC will only play 1 ranked team (W against Ohio St.) so they really dont deserve to be in the NC race. I believe that USC deserves to contend with the SEC tho, they have shown that they can beat Ohio St. as easily as the SEC has.

They tell the story. First FORGET the AP, it doesn’t count. The Coaches Poll and Harris Poll make up 2/3 of the BCS formula. The Polls say USC is the best 1 loss team in the Country, better than some unbeatens. If 2 of the current top 5 stay unbeaten (NO WAY), they will play for a title. If everone who hasn’t lost yet, loses 1, hmm, can you see the writing on the wall? USC V ?

No defense in the Big 12-give me a break w/ Oklahoma (super hype once again-although i would love to have that O-Line)
FL looked scary good-any team that starts out slow against them will be rolled over
UGAs defense will keep them in the game with LSU (not impressed w/ LSU)-lets just beat Vandy for now
Alabama, Penn State and FL are the best teams in the country right now-i would like to see Texas against a real defense before throwing their name in the hat

I read these blogs on a regular basis, and I’m never surprised by the ignorance that is spewed all over the board. It is quite obvious that none of you all have ever played or coached a game(Video games don’t count). Most teams have 5 or 6 games left in the season, and the BCS standings aren’t even out yet. The teams that play for the national championship will probably both have at least 1 loss. If the Big-12 champion and the SEC champion both have 1 loss or less, they will play for the national title regardless of what the other conference champion’s records are. The spread offense puts points on the board, but quarterbacks from those systems have never translated to NFL success(Jason White, Nate Hybl, Vince Young, Timmy Chang, Andre Ware, and the kid from Texas Tech a few years ago) just a few examples. And about my Bulldogs, we lack discipline, a killer instinct, and we’re stuck with an average defensive coordinator(I don’t care what ya’ll think, Martinez doesn’t scheme well or make good in-game adjustments), and Bobo is overly predictable(screen pass, screen pass, bomb, screen pass). We have the talent to beat anybody, but it seems we can’t get on the same page.
To all teams, just win baby.

“look at the polls” you are sgtupid too…a one loss team wont get it this year especially a pac 10 one loss team. USC played 1 I repeat 1 ranked team and wont play another. They are a great team but do not deserve to play for the NC because they lost to an UNRANKED team. Goes to show the media is in USC’s pocket.
A one loss SEC team is different because half of the conference is ranked.

Tony’s point, I think, is that penalties will eventually rise up and hurt you. They may not have against Tenn., they sure did against ‘Bama. If you keep giving good/decent teams chanes, and keep shooting yourself in the foot, it will eventually hurt you. When will GA really turn it on? I see another offensive lineman hurt and out for the year. It may simply be one of those snakebit years. GA is incredibly talented, they just have not put it all together yet against a good team and looked impressive.
That said, life could be worse. You could be Clemson.

Tony, you were influenced by one game. After covering college football for so long, one would think that you would have noticed that teams occasionally put it all together and play a great game. That’s what Fla did against LSU. The same team that lost to Ole Miss had a great game against LSU. Also, the penalties on Saturday were not killers. The two interceptions were. It looked to me that Stafford did not even look at where he was throwing the ball. If he does that against LSU or Fla, perhaps we will lose. But that’s a discussion for another day. The only thing that matters now is getting ready for Vandy; that’s the next game. Vandy has played surprisingly well, and also consistently. That’s the mark of a well-coached team, and IMO, Bobby Johnson is a really good coach.

Objectivity in the polls?
College Game Day studio “analyst” Craig James said immediately after the Texas/OU game that he was filling his ballot out on Sunday for Texas No. 1. That was just before 3:00 Sat. before LSU, Missouri, Penn State, Texas Tech, USC and the rest of the football world that means anything even played a down Sat.
Incidentally James born and raised in Texas, played college in Texas, and lives in Texas. He also has an AP ballot.

Most of those quarterbacks are homegrown out in the Big 12. You have a bunch of cowboys out there that like playing football. Hell even the Georgia quarterback came out of Dallas. The other thing you get are good offensive linemen. The SEC and ACC are hurting for offensive linemen. Texas deserves to be number one. If Alabama or one of those whining SEC coaches had beaten Oklahoma and been left out it would have been a Dr. Phil melt down moment.

I can’t see the Auburn fans getting behind any “fire Tommy” movement. IMO, firing Tubbs would be un-called for and absolutely stupid. Look for Clemson to make a strong move after Vandy’s coach, and posssibly Will Muschamp, The door to the ACC title game is opening for Tech now, but the Jackets need to be careful. Give me a break on the polls. The polls are for one thing and one thing only, tv ratings. Watch if UGA wins this week and nothing else happens in the top 10, like magic, UGA will jump a couple spots to create a more marketable LSU/UGA matchup. Penn St. is ok but top 10 - puhleeze. USC above UGA after we lost to #2 Alabama and they lost to Oregon St. - puhleeze. These rankings mean ZERO.

Just remember that it wasn’t until after the Tenn games last year that the Dawgs put their noses to the grindstone and started playing like champs. On the plus side this year is that Georgia only has one loss as oppose to the two of a year ago. I’m hoping for a breakout game against Vandy. Playing LSU and Florida needs no buildup. If you can’t get up that, then you don’t deserve to be invited to the dance. Regardless of the outcome, the SEC is the most unbelievable conference I’ve ever seen. Texas may have a tough schedule, as does Georgia. But you haven’t been beat down until you faced SEC defenses.

For those of you who can read you should be able to figure this out for yourselves; for those of you who can’t (Chris in Bama), I’ll explain.
These two polls makeup 2/3 of the BCS formula for bowl selection. If Texas, Alabama, and Penn State win out; Texas will play Alabama for the NC. If however these 3 unbeaten teams should Stumble, USC and OU are in position to Play for the NC. If the BCS Poll were released today it would mirror the Coaches Polls first 5 selections.
For anyone having trouble understanding (Chris in Bama) all the teams who are unbeaten have to do is win, and they should be ok. However as most experts agree, the closer to the end of the season you loss, the harder to makeup the difference.
Special note to all those Georgia fans who are thinking, “this just isn’t fair” GET OVER IT, and don’t get your panties in a bunch, you will lose to Florida and LSU anyway.

When I said Tubberville will go to Clemson, it wasn’t because Auburn would fire Tubberville. He is a great coach. But I also think he is an opportunist (think ole miss). Clemson is an easier job than Auburn with about the same recruiting base and equal facilities, stadium, and check book. And you don’t have to beat Alabama every year, you just have to beat South Carolina. Even T. Bowden was able to do that.

Tony, did you watch the game?!! Or just look at the box score. Surely you saw it, but in case you didn’t:
2 penalties (one offense; one defense) for 10 yards at half time. 3 dalay of game penalties at end of game coaches decision to ice the game.
Playcalling in the red zone against a very stout Tennessee defense was the reason for a closer than it really was score.
11 minute drive in fourth quarter ate up clock against the vaunted Vol defensive front seven.
Should have been 24 to 7 halftime score if refs not botch call on defensive holding against UT. 28 to 7 if AJ catches wide open td pass (first drop of the year for the sensational freshman)
Just pointing out that the stats don’t lie - Georgia dominated the Vols. Yet, the media sees UGA and USC in two entirely opposite ways. One is a struggling barely top ten team and the other is a national title contender.

Gator Nation, you have a great point about some of my fellow Georgia fans, they can be delusional at times. The game and the season is what it is, like I said before, if the 1 loss teams in the SEC and Big-12 just win, they will be fine as far as the national championship game is concerned. Tubberville isn’t as big of an opportunist as Petrino, so unless he’s fired, he’ll probably stay at Auburn I think. whatacrock, you’re exactly right about the USC thing. How in the hell does a 1 loss USC who was defeated by an unranked opponent jump a 1 loss UGA that lost to the #2 team in the country? The pollsters never sieze to amaze me. I have a dream that one day all of this can be settled on the field!

I guess I can understand why all the gator people are excited and talking trash after beating down LSU Saturday. The next couple of weeks will tell if uf’s really that good or if LSU was just horribly overranked. Anyway, how in the world is UGA putting together a better looking O-Line every week with all the damned injuries? They must have been even more loaded at that position than I thought. The D is looking better too. Look out Vandy!

I think Georgia is better than USC, but I’ll tell you why USC is ranked higher. Georgia’s loss was a “better loss” than USC’s, but who has Georgia beaten? USC whipped and then top 5 Ohio State. What signature win does Georgia have? Georgia still has a better shot at the national championship than USC. The remainder of USC’s schedule sucks. Georgia has solid teams the rest of the way.
So I say once again. Georgia fans…..relax.

What do you mean Jump? USC has been ahead of Georgia in the polls since they beat Ohio State.
That might explain it.
USC has beaten 2 ranked teams this season, Ohio State and Oregon.
Georgia lost to the only team they have played at home in their pretty black uniforms(that is against a team ranked in the top 25, they looked pretty good against the Div 1AA).
Their common opponent is ASU. USC beat them by more, scored more against them, and held them to fewer points than UGA, in fact they shut them out.

Looks to me like the Les Miles effect might finally be sinking in at LSU. They were loaded with talent last year but thanks to Miles’ erratic coaching were a couple of plays from losing 4 games and only got a shot at the National Title game against a highly overrated Ohio State game because West Virginia pulled one of the epic choke jobs of all time against Pitt.
As Paul Gattis of the Huntsville Times notes, LSU’s vaunted defense has given up at least 2 touchdowns in its last 9 SEC games and has given up 3 or more in several of them. LSU is the only defense so far this year to make Auburn’s offense look almost competent for even a quarter. Auburn scored 3 TDs against LSU, 1 against Tennessee (the other touchdown was a defensive fumble recovery in the end zone) and none against Miss. St. in that dramatic 3-2 victory.
As Gary Danielson pointed out at the top of Saturday’s telecast, LSU’s defense had played nobody this year prior to Florida, and they promptly coughed up 52 points to the Gators.
Before it’s all over, I think Les Miles has a good chance to give Phat Phil Fulmer a run for the sorriest coach to ever luck into a national championship.

TB, have always enjoyed your column, but you’re trying to do a bit of revisionest history right now. On friday you picked UGA to struggle to eek out a close win against UT. They won by 12 and it should have been much worse. granted the penalties need to improve, but nothing in that game should make you think the Dawgs can’t play and beat lsu and uf. I mean come on…LSU has been VERY unimpressive in every game they have played. they gave up 24 to msu, and I forgot how many to auburn (maybe the most ua scored all year). LSU is still getting media love from last years team. This isn’t last years lsu team. If UGA were to lose to LSU after what i’ve seen of both teams it would be an upset. If you are feeling bad about picking the dawgs #1 in your preseason poll and don’t want to admit you were wrong, I’ll do it for you. You were wrong. If you looked at the dawgs LOS (especailly offense) you should have known they were maybe a year away (especially after the injury to Sturdivant). The dawgs are still paying for the recruiting lapses in 2004/05 on the LOS. Hopefully that will never happen again. all that said I expect the dawgs to go in to the UF game with just the one loss and a chance for wining the east. If you want to get off the bandwagon, don’t let the door hit ya… Go Dawgs

Wow. We couldn’t stop Georgia 5 or 6 times in the second half when we needed to. If we had, and our offense could have gotten lucky……Much closer than the score. Any of you who think you dominated us are nuts. You were better…..We were pathetic……..But to try dismiss us like we weren’t a break or two away from winning is absurd. Don’t get me wrong…..We are not good right now. Ya’ll need to get it together……..Quickly……..Beat Florida and we’ll talk. They can mental frag out at a moment’s notice. They’re not that good either….

UGA has a chance is Stafford will throw to the open receiver and not the triple covered one, especially on a SCREEN, he is right in front of you there is now way you missed the read on the 300-pounder. Does anyone remember the last time Stafford intentionally threw the ball away. How about the game he didn’t throw everything off his back foot.
Best think for UGA next year is Stafford goes to the draft!

With all due respect; are you crazy?
If you say Florida is a better team than USC, maybe, that well could be. They looked like it Saturday.
But if you have been watching both Georgia, and USC this season, than you have to admit, when both offences are working USC has the edge, they explode (and I’m talking about against good teams). And USC has one of the very best defenses in the NCAA, just check the record. They have shut good teams down, everyone scores against the puppies.
Now be honest, you can’t wait to play them in Jacksonville, I’m I right?
Now this isn’t a SEC-PAC 10 debate, there is no question the SEC is a superior conference.
What I am saying and the stats will support; USC has a program that is superior to the UGA program.
They recruit better players, win more games (better record), have a better record against ranked teams, have played in more BCS bowls and have a better bowl record.

My thoughts:
As cited above, Florida is neither as good as they looked on Saturday, nor is LSU as bad as they looked. However, Florida is still pretty dang good—best in the SEC, in my estimation. Alabama’s second in the conference, with better starters on the lines but less depth than the Gators. Georgia’s third, with the talent to beat anyone in the league on a given Saturday, but the sloppiness of the team is such that they could also lose to anyone on any given day (including Vandy, if the Dawgs don’t come ready to play on Saturday). LSU is fourth. QB woes will be their undoing against Georgia, as they will not be able to run consistently on Georgia’s defense.
The orginal General Neyland once said that a college football team will give its best effort maybe two or three times a season. Last year, for Georgia, it was against Auburn, Florida and Hawaii. They haven’t had a gane like any of those so far this year. If the Dawgs put it all together against Florida again, they could go to the SECCG with a chance to play ‘Bama for the SEC title. I doubt the result would be the same. If the Gators beat Georgia, they’ll go to the National Title game after beating ‘Bama and will probably play (and destroy) Penn State, who will be unbeaten in the dishwater Big 10. Texas will lose this weekend to Missouri, who will be out for redemption after choking against OSU.
Spurrier’s got the Gamecocks coming around. They won’t win the SEC East, but they’ll upset some folks—maybe even this weekend…

UGA commits too many penalties! UGA can’t score in the red zone! UGA has too many injuries! UGA has only sophomores and freshman on the O-line! UGA is not getting any pressure on the QB’s! UGA had UGA VI die before the season! UGA had too many arrests in the off season! For the #10 ranked team in the country we haven’t done anything right according to the AJC. Maybe UGA should just go ahead and forfeit the remainder of the games seeing as we have all these warts and problems.

voice of reason?, you’re right. They actually jumped us the very first week when they badly beat someone else other than osu. UGA dropped from 1 to 3 in 2 weeks because of the media’s love affair with usc. Don’t get it at all. They don’t play a tough schedule and they still get beat by an unranked team almost every year. The garbage that Hey Gator Nation just wrote is a testament to their weak schedule. If usc recruited better players they would send more players to the NFL, wouldn’t they? But they don’t, do they? And they’ve won a few more games and have been to more BCS bowls due to their weak a* schedule. If you put UGA in the Pac 10, they’d look just as good or better. If you put usc in the SEC, they’d lose more often. Some people just don’t get it and they never will. Unfortunately, the same goes for the idiots that get to vote on this crap system. The media should be left out of it. UGA and the SEC rule!

If you have one shred of common sense and really understand football and you honestly take toughness of schedule into consideration, UGA should not be behind Texas Tech, USC, BYU, or uf. Yes uf beat a top 5 team but they also got beat, at home, to unranked Ole Miss. USC is, for some reason, still getting too much credit for beating a rediculously overranked osu team who also plays a very weak schedule. BYU and TT haven’t played anyone to deserve being ranked ahead of UGA whose only loss was to the #2 team in the nation. Penn State will probably enjoy the rest of the season playing in the so-called big 10 and get the smackdown in the nc game by the SEC champ because the big 12 does have a couple of good teams to contend with and will probably trip each other up just like the SEC does to each other every year. Sure would be nice to let the top 8 teams play it off wouldn’t it? And yes, UGA will be in the mix in a couple of weeks when we beat LSU and uf back to back on the road! Just don’t overlook Vandy on the way and lay another egg.

Tony, Tell everyone at ESPN and Mark the prick May. I don’t want to hear anyone say Oklahoma can play for the National Championship if they can’t even win there division in the big 12. UGA was automaticlly disqualified last year for not winning the east. If Texas wins the division and loses the championship game Oklahoma should not play in the NC just like UGA last year.

What do you just make sh!t up.
You asked “If usc recruited better players they would send more players to the NFL, wouldn’t they? But they don’t, do they?”
HERE ARE THE FACTS:
USC has had more 1st Round NFL Draft picks (67) than any other team. 162 Trojans have been selected to the NFL Pro Bowl, a Trojan has played in all but two Super Bowls.
Except from 2007 article:
At the start of training camp this summer, there were 41 ex-Trojans on National Football League rosters, including 7 rookies. In fact, USC players were on the rosters of 21 of the NFL’s 32 teams. Most of the Trojans were defensive backs, offensive linemen, wide receivers or running backs (5 each).
In 2006, there were 26 Trojans on opening day NFL rosters; only 11 universities had more players (since records were made available, USC has been No. 1 in 17 of the last 30 years).
Currently the following players from USC are on NFL rosters.(54)
Sam Baker, OT - Atlanta Falcons
Darnell Bing, S - New York Jets

The load mouth puppy fans are pains, but they don’t tarnish teams like Florida, LSU (yes they got beat but there are a top 5 program over the past decade) and recently the return of Alabama.
USC fans recognize the sustained competitive teams the best SEC programs bring year in and year out, and we respect them.
Yes we think the Trojans can beat any team in the Country, but we don’t exclude the possibility that Florida or LSU can win on any given Saturday against the Trojans, Saturday night Florida would have beaten anyone in the NCAA, and maybe some NFL teams, they were great. But UGA isn’t in the same class as the previously mentioned programs.

Holy S* I make a typo because I didn’t proof read and all of the sudden I’m getting called son and stupid. Grow up!
I am sick and tired of USC, UGA and Auburn fans this year.
No way in hell Allbarn will beat Bama, No way will UGA win in a rematch against Bama and no way USC will beat the top SEC team in the NC if that ends up being the match up.
Auburn fans keep running their mouth like they still have a good team. It stinks! They blow harder than hurricane Katrina did.
UGA fans are unrealistic for the current talent and depth they have. Give them another year or so and I will go along with it.
USC fans still think that they are “better” than every SEC team because they beat a crappy low tier Auburn 2 years in a row and an even worse Arkansas twice. Who gives a rip? USC is a GREAT team that can CONTEND with the SEC not dominate them.
That being said I have very high hopes for Bama but realistic expectations. Bama is better this year than they have been in a long time. They have the potential to go undefeated and even win the NC but will they do it. Bama has had a tendency to blow games that they should have won and I expect that it may happen once this year but it wont be against Auburn.

Well guys, as much as I hate to say it, we’ve got a ton of problems to work out. What I saw Sat doesn’t leave me to believe we’re a top 10 team. What pains me the most is that no one on these blogs or the coaching staff can come up with a solution.(of course bullsh!ten about the blogs, although they’re a ton of coaches on here). I know we’re riddled with injuries, but dam…..what the hell is going on with us….Yes, we racked up 450+ yds of offense, but most teams that do that score 45+ points or more. I’m a DAWG lifer. That won’t change. But good lord, why in the hell can’t we put teams away when we should??? I swear……we play like that against UF or LSU….it will be another BAMA all over again.

Gag me with a spoon! They proved how great they are against LSU But then you go on to say that LSU isn’t as good as everyone thought, so you’re kinda contradicting yourself since you are using the beat down of LSU as your main argument for Florida’s greatness. It was a home game that FL was jacked up for against a team that gave them a lot of ammunition(taking out tebow thing). So I don’t want to hear that they cant be competed with for the rest of the year. This article was pretty much crowning them instant national champions at mid-season. I mean yeah, they’re good, but come on. They are definitely beatable, we saw that with the Ole Miss game.

As a fan for LSU there are no excuses for them. They are not as good as their ranking was. It hurt that Miles kick the problem QB off the team and we have a freshmen running it. The D is not what it has been in the past. I knew when Bo left and Miles didn’t bring someone in we were going to be hurting this year. How is it even possible for CMR to teach self-control and discipline to the football players at UGA? That is the question. Those infernal flags will keep flying and we fans will continue to ask the same question. What can be done? I have a suggestion for CMR. Here it is. Any player who has been flagged this football season should be MADE to wear an official referee penalty flag for a whole week. Any player caught without said flag will be suspended for the next 2 games. Get serious CMR and less talk!!!!
