Dawgs win, but it won’t be easy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Auburn lost to Vanderbilt (14-13) because the offense against lost its way and on Wednesday Tony Franklin, who is in charge of said offense, lost this job.
Ole Miss lost to South Carolina (31-24) because the Rebels couldn’t handle the success of beating Florida the week before and because The Head Ball Coach of the Gamecocks may be starting to figure some things out on offense.
Maryland lost to Virginia (31-0) because Well, I don’t know why Maryland lost to Virginia the week after beating Clemson in Death Valley. The game made no sense.
Wisconsin had the lead on Ohio State late and probably didn’t think a freshman quarterback could drive the field on them to win the game. Wrong. Terrelle Pryor did it and the Badgers saw their 16-game home winning streak snapped 20-17.
There are at least three games in that list that could have easily gone the other way but your humble prognosticator was on the other side and finished with a record of 6-4 last week. That gives us a reasonable record of 43-17 after six weeks.
Thanks to the soap opera at Auburn, what was already going to be a great weekend of college football has even more drama. So let’s just wade in and begin yet another edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast.
1. Tennessee (2-3) at Georgia (4-1): Logically, this game should not be close. Nothing is working on the offensive side of the ball at Tennessee. The Volunteer fan base is restless, angry, and in some cases, resigned to a bad season. There are Tennessee fans who want the administration to pull the plug on Phillip Fulmer’s 17-year tenure right now. Georgia has had a week to rest and needs to get back on track. If Georgia believes that it is one of the elite teams in the country, the Bulldogs need to start making the case. The energy for this game is strange. Georgia’s fans should be jacked up because of what Tennessee did to them last year in Knoxville. Maybe that changes once the game starts. I just get the sense that Tennessee is so overdue to play a decent game that they will come to Athens and be able to take Georgia’s best shot. The Bulldogs win it, but not without a scare. Georgia 24, Tennessee 21.
2. Gardner-Webb (2-3) at Georgia Tech (4-1): This game is about one thing and one thing only. And that’s putting GW away as soon as possible without injury so that the preparations can begin for the trip to Clemson on Oct. 18. If that means that both Jaybo Shaw and Josh Nesbitt have to sit then so be it. Give Calvin Booker his shot because he’s earned it. Tech should be able to break a few big plays early and then give the starters the rest of the day off. Georgia Tech 45, Gardner-Webb 3.
3. LSU (4-0) at Florida (4-1): Five games into the season Florida still hasn’t put together a sharp performance from start to finish. Well, the Gators are going to need one on Saturday night if they are going to beat No. 4 LSU. LSU has had a week off and if Jarrett Lee continues to give the Tigers good play at quarterback, they are going to be hard to beat. But keep this in mind. LSU is planning to play both Lee and Andrew Hatch at quarterback. Why? Because Lee is young and he has never seen anything like the crowd that will be on top of him Saturday night at The Swamp. If Lee makes mistakes, the Gators might find a way to win. I just think LSU is too physical on both lines of scrimmage and that the Florida offensive line continues to have its problems. The Tigers will try to smack Florida in the mouth early the way Alabama did Georgia. But this game will be much closer. LSU 24, Florida 20.
4. Arkansas (2-3) at Auburn (4-2): It has been a pretty tough week at Auburn with the firing of offensive coordinator Tony Franklin and the fallout that has been hitting head coach Tommy Tuberville. Veteran coach Steve Ensminger, a former assistant at Georgia, will call the plays in what is sure to be a back to basics approach against Arkansas, which has the No. 107 rushing defense in the country (208.44 ypg). It will be ugly, you can count on that, but Auburn will find a way to win at home. Auburn 24, Arkansas 10.
5. South Carolina (4-2) at Kentucky (5-1): Kentucky proved that its defense was for real last week in holding Alabama to just one offensive touchdown in a 17-14 loss at Tuscaloosa. It was a tough loss but I think Kentucky gained some confidence from the game. Quarterback Chris Smelley played perhaps his best game at South Carolina last week when the Gamecocks won at Ole Miss 31-24. But Smelley has found it difficult to play consistently and will take his lumps at Lexington. Kentucky 17, South Carolina 14.
6. Vanderbilt (5-0) at Miss. State (1-4): Vanderbilt is 5-0 for the first time since 1943 and with a win would be 6-0 for the first time since 1928. Vanderbilt has never been 4-0 in the SEC and could do that with a win at Starkville. Vanderbilt continues to lead the nation in turnover margin (plus-9) and has only committed 16 penalties in five games. (Georgia, by contrast has 53 penalties in five games). As long as the Commodores don’t turn the ball over they will be fine in this game because Mississippi State is ranked 114th in scoring (16.2 ppg). Vanderbilt 20, Miss. State 7.
7. Notre Dame (4-1) at North Carolina (4-1): Notre Dame has won four games but three of those have come against teams with defenses ranked No. 91 or worse (Stanford, San Diego State, Purdue). The Tar Heels were pretty impressive last week in a 38-12 win over Connecticut and are starting to figure some things out. The ACC, which people were calling the worst conference in the world in early September, gets another chance to post a big non-conference win. The Tar Heels are 1-16 all time against Notre Dame. On Saturday they will double their win total against the Fighting Irish. North Carolina 31, Notre Dame 21.
8. Texas (5-0) vs. Oklahoma (5-0) in Dallas: It’s the biggest matchup of the weekend as No. 1 plays No. 5. Both have hot quarterbacks. Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford is completing 72.6 percent of his passes and is averaging 15.7 yards per completion. Colt McCoy of Texas has been beating teams with his arm and his feet, averaging 319.4 yards of total offense per game. The edge in this game goes to Oklahoma because of defense. Look for the OU defense to hit McCoy early and often in order to get him off rhythm. The Texas defense, under new DC Will Muschamp, is playing with a little more of an edge. But the Longhorns only have two interceptions on the season in 199 passing attempts against them.. Oklahoma 28, Texas 20.
9. Oklahoma State (5-0) at Missouri (5-0): Right now no quarterback in the country is playing better than Missouri’s Chase Daniel. Last week against Nebraska, Missouri had 462 total yards. Daniel had 412 of them and led the Tigers to scores on six of his first seven possessions before sitting out the rest of the game. Oklahoma State has scored 50 or more points in its last four games. Missouri seems destined to run the table and face Texas or Oklahoma on Dec. 6 for the Big 12 championship. This could be a wild one. Missouri 38, Oklahoma State 24.
10. Penn State (6-0) at Wisconsin (3-2): Wisconsin had Ohio State beat last week until the Buckeyes and Terrelle Pryor drove the length of the field and scored late. Now Wisconsin has a chance to salvage its season by knocking off the nation’s No. 6 team. Penn State has one quality win over Illinois (38-24) at home. The Nittany Lions play at Ohio State on Oct. 25. I say Penn State looks past the Badgers and gets upset on the road. Wisconsin 17, Penn State 16.

From the original ROSWELL ED:
Thank you azcat225 for your post from yesterday:
As to Roswell Ed, some of you sound a bit…disturbed. By my last count, at least three other posers were using his nickname. The genuine Roswell Ed, if he even bothers reading this blog any more, is probably laughing his a$$ right now.
I’ve actually only blogged about 6 times in the last 3 months.
The sad part is that all you idiots respond to a guy who only sez the Bulldogs suck or Auburn will beat the doggies by 4 touchdowns.
I guess its easier for you idiots to fire back at a mentally challenged individual than someone who actually makes sense and puts you in your place.
I would never not post because my team got beat.
Earth to all you nitwits- this is a game played by 19 and 20 year old kids.
To think that would ruin someones week is ridiculous.
It’s just a football game.
By my count there are at least 3 or 4 people that sign in on the alias that I made famous.
So the next time all of you that respond to that other hack remember its you who’s the moron or Ediot.
Haven’t y’all noticed that he(they) type the same exact thing everyday. Kind of like m and Ramble On.
And then like a bunch of lemmings y’all are sure to follow.

Dawgs win by 17….first half close and intense. dawgs run the ball second half and control the clock, probably 10-7 at the half or there abouts, Dawgs score 2 TD’s second half and a field goal and shut vols out.

Tony Agree with you Tony Tennessee puts together it’s most complete game of the year for the Dawgs. They always do, better be ready for it.
I think Penn St. has more than everybody thinks and wins a close one. I also think Gators win against LSU, playing in the swamp is worth a few points and LSU going with 2 QB”s makes them seem unsettled to me. I like Texas against Oklahoma. South Carolina over Kentucky. Hope Kentucky wins but, South Carolina can match defence with anybody. I just think they have a better offense. Pulling for Vandy to win.And pulling for North Carolina. Mizzou vs Okl St. don’t matter 2me

The Vols will be highly motivated and will put forth a Herculean effort in this game.
When all is said and done, however, I fear that they will find that they are simply out-manned, out-coached and out-classed.
Georgia should win handily.
~~~
LSU will finally be tested against a legitimate football team. I suspect that both programs are over-rated and I wouldn’t bet on the outcome of this game even if I was prone to gambling.
~~~
No offense toward Sly Croom, but you just have to hope that Vandy keeps this crazy train rolling.
~~~
I don’t know that much about Texas or Oklahoma — but I guess I’ll learn something Saturday.
~~~
Oklahoma State vs. Missouri should be about like the Kentucky vs. Alabama game last week. It might be close — but the outcome should never be in doubt.
~~~
If Penn State loses, then the Big 10 will be rendered irrelevant for the 2008 season. The Nittany Lions are their only hope for post-season prominence.
~~~
As for the others… meh. Who cares?

If the UGA/TENN game is close, UGA will lose at least 2 more games this year. UGA should win by at least 10. But if UGA win by less than 7 or if they lose this will be the most disappointing season in some time for this program because of the high expectations.

Georgia 30, Tennessee 10.

shane#1, Howdy pard! Well this week should prove interesting for y’all, a good showing coupled with an LSU win and y’all are in the driver seat for the SEC championship. Well that is if ‘Bama stubs their toe along the way or in a rematch. We need to keep our nose to the grind stone and keep our foot on the gas with no let ups. No margin for error for either of our teams. I’m off to Chicago next week for a big trade show so catch ya on the flip side!!

Only in SEC country could a game featuring the two top five teams get previewed after the rundown of the big South Carolina/Kentucky match-up. Where’s the love for the Big 12 match up between #1 OU and #5 Texas.
Both teams have national titles in the past eight years as USC, Ohio State or Florida. Both teams have coaches with ties to the south (Mack Brown at UNC, Stoops at FLorida). Both teams are traditional football powers with more national cache than all but a four or five other teams in the nation. Where’s the love?!
If you’re a real football fan, you better pay attention to what’s happening in Dallas on Saturday morning. OU/Texas is what college football is about and deserves way more pub that it’s getting. It’s bigger than anything that’s happened since the USC/Ohio State game.
SEC fans who really love football should tune in and enjoy.
Tony, you should give it a little more respect than a passing mention after the meaningless Vandy/Miss State game or the even more meaningless ND/North Carolina game.

Pulling for the Dawgs and the Dogs to pull off a win this Saturday. Kentucky vs USC east will be a battle of defenses. If you love defense, this is your game. LSU wins at home, someone have a hankie on the sideline for Urban. I guess he can always borrow the line judge’s. I will be amazed if Gardner Webb scores on a fired up Jackets team. The Heels put the boot to the Irish. Auburn is in a must win, they will pull it out but it could be ugly.

You were dealing with Eric Ainge the last few years, somehow he played great against GA. This offense of Ga is going to be the best one you guys have seen this year. I don’t see this game close at all, Ga wins by 17 to 20 points. Be ready to leave back to Knoxville after the third Quarter unless you like spending money on shots after the loss in Athens.

LSU will send TeBaby and Urban Crier sobbing deep into the night. The only people who can stop RJF are Penn Wagers, Steve Shaw and Mark Curles. If you don’t know who they are check out the zebras.
Oklahoma wins and rolls to the BCS.
Penn St wins but loses to the Suckeyes, which sets up a Game of the Century II between So Cal and OSU in the Rose Bowl.

1- Ut vs UGA, SEC game, east division up for grabs, yeah, it’ll be close. Dawgs win at home. 2- One of My Daughters went to Gardner Webb, so I would love for them to win, but it won’t happen. Tech wins. I disagree with Tony about the QB situation. Nesbitt has missed a lot of time with injuries and Jaybo is a true freshman so both need reps. Nothing like a full speed scrimage to get the guys ready for Clemson, I would give them both at least a quarter a piece and work on new plays for the big game next week. 3- I am tempted to go with LSU but I can’t see the Gators losing two at home in this short a time. Gators win. 4- Auburn wins a close one. Go back to the power O Tubbs, and use those RBs, including the one that plays QB. 5- Spurrier never forgot how to coach offense Tony! Smelly just decided to play some ball. If he plays QB the way he did against Ole Miss and UGA Spurrier wins, because the D will be there. South Carolina wins, unless Smelly starts throwing ints. 6- Vandy wins, unless they go to sleep. How ‘bout that, Vandy may be overconfidant! 7- This could go either way, Carolina in a close one. 8- Texas in an upset, Stoops seems to have problems in big games, and “Coach You Tube” will have his D flying around the field. 9- Unless Okie State grew a defense when I wasn’t looking, Big Mo in an easy one. 10- I once thought Wisky had a shot at the Big 11 title, not anymore. The Badgers seem to play slow and heavy on D and Paterno knows how to shut down a running game. JoePa also has the LBs to do just that, like in the old days. Tony, I went 8 and 2 last week. I told You that UVa was due and that the Badgers couldn’t contain Wells and Pryor. I also said that Ole Miss hadn’t gotten over their day in the swamp. We in South Ga have been hearing a lot about confusion at FSU so they suprised Me, and I never thought Tubbs would give up on the running game against Vandy. Finally, Tommy Bowden has thrown away his shot at the big time. There is no excuse for a team with as much talent as Clemson has to be three and three in the ACC. I can understand losing to ‘Bama, but losing to teams like Wake Forest and Maryland with a loaded team like Clkemson just floors Me. I can see Clemson losing four more games, including the hated Gamecocks.

Gardner-Webb vs Georgia Tech? Why is this even included here? Notre Dame vs North Carolina? Who cares?
Georgia will win a close one because I don’t believe they’ve gotten over their penalty problems.
LSU vs Florida will go into overtime. Les Miles will get the ball first, opting for the touchdown pass on 4th and 20 instead of the field goal to force Florida to score a TD or lose. LSU will get it too. LSU wins 24-17.
Oklahoma State gets the upset and finally exposes the lack of defense at Missouri. The score will something like 68-59.
Wisconsin will keep it close in the first quarter then Derrick Williams will run his 3rd kickoff return for a touchdown and the blowout will begin. 38-10.
Vandy will go 4-0 in the SEC but the score will look more like 9-3.
Oklahoma vs Texas too close to call. One of those rivalries where anything can happen.
The other games on the list are pointless.

Interesting post; but your just a tad off.
Everyone will have at least 1 loss (at least everyone that counts). The best SEC record will be LSU with 2 loses.
OU will make it to the BCS, but USC and OSU won’t happen. OSU will have to play the runner up at the Rose bowl.
OU and USC will meet at the BCS for a re-match of the 2004 “Game of the Century II”, same result, USC blows them out, and wins it’s 3rd NC in the 2000’s.

Micah says the Vanderbilt Miss State game is meaningless…
Well, Micah is a shortsighted individual.
Certainly, the game has great meaning for Vandy fans and Miss bulldog fans. But that’s not my point.
My point is that after the season is over and Vanderbilt has won the SEC East, the game will have proven to have had enormous meaning.
It could be the first time in the history of the SEC that the team ‘picked at the bottom of the conference in the preseason’ went on to become the champion.
There’s a lot of football still to be played, you say. Well, after Sat. VU will be 6-0 and headed to Athens for Homecoming and I can hardly wait.
As for the ut GA game, ut will be lucky to kick two FG’s. And I can hardly wait until Nov. 22nd, either.

The Vandy game is meaningless. Who has Vandy beaten? They’re a nice feel-good story after 6 games, but does anyone really think they’re that good? The SEC East is watered down. If Vandy wins their division, it will be a byproduct of other’s failures rather than an outstanding Vandy team. Reminds me of the Duke team under Barry Goldsmith in the mid-90’s. They ran through a soft early season schedule and hit a wall when the competition got a little stiffer.

I predict another penalty-filled fiasco sprinkled with a couple of crumby calls by the refs that make it a very tight contest. Perhaps even a over-time affair. But I think my dogs will end up finding a way. Even if it is ugly. By the way, all of you Gayturd fans that are so cocky, we’ll save the best for you!

I guess you stroke Kentucky because of the win last week by South Carolina. I think you will see what good coaches do in South Carolina winning two significant games in a row Saturday. Georgia is coming off of a break, Tennessee has the lowest iq quarterback in the SEC and the crowd alone will take him out of this game, what is fun is if Georgia tries to overplay to make up for Alabama, I don’t think Richt will let that happen and Tennessee may be one of the weaker teams in the SEC. Florida beats LSU.

LOCK of the week: Alabama will NOT lose!
For all you gamblers out there take a look at Arizona, Minnesota, and the OVER in the MIZZ/OKST game.
Not sure about the spread in the GEORGIA game but THE DAWGS will NOT lose to Tennessee.
Something FISHY about the line in the South Carolina/Kentucky game. SC favored @ KY???? Did you see the defense Kentucky played against BAMA. Better stear clear, if it makes no sense bet the way it makes no sense!!
Have a great weekend, I will, MY team can’t lose.

Granted, Ole Miserable came into the Swamp and won——LSU is a different story. Gators will be ready—-smaller DL and OL notwithstanding. This game will be won by Tebow….he’ll show the country just why he won the Heisman last season.

Barnhart, do you actually do any real research for these games, or do you just take the spread and listen to the espn talking heads? Why even give an opinion on a game like Mizzou Okie St. when you don’t even have your facts straight. Chase Daniel didn’t have 412 total yards against Nebraska? He threw for 253 and Washington (who was the real key) ran for 139. Chase doesn’t run very much. 38-24?? …wow, way to go out on a limb there! The spread is 14. Very insightful!

This week’s fearless, but fallible predictions——
(1) Georgia should win this one on the strength of relative talent alone, but, given UGA’s history of playing to the level of their opponents, I would take Tennessee and the points.
(2) Why is this game even considered. Okay, Tech is the hometown team, but the GT athletic department should be embarrassed that they scheduled this game.
(3) Gators get angry, play their best game of the season, and rediscover their home field advantage in the Swamp. Florida over LSU, 24-20.
(4) This is a game made for Auburn: they only need to score 14 to win. Tigers over the Hogs, 14-3.
(5) Psychological letdown for Kentucky after playing an emotionally draining loss to Bama, and South Carolina has some defense of their own. Gamecocks 21, Wilcats 14.
(6) Yeah, Vanderbilt IS the new fifth team in the SEC, and they want to move up. Now, they’re dangerous because they’re starting to BELIEVE. Commodores 24, Bulldogs 10. Six and oh, baby.
(7) Speaking of a team that starting to believe in itself, Chapel Hill is on the rise in the ACC. UNC 27, ND 17. Hell, Duke can win, UNC can, too.
(8) Is Oklahoma for real, or are they faking it? This game will shed some light. Look for the Longhorn upset. Hook’em, Horns.
(9) Oklahoma State is gradually getting better, but Mizzou looks like the class of the Big XII. Tigers feed on the Cowboys by 17. Maybe next year, boys.
(10) Penn State wins one for the Gip … er, Joe Pa. Nittany Lions over Badgers by 10.
Florida Dawg, wherever you are, remember I predicted the Vandy win over Auburn!
Best of luck to all the teams for whom you cheer. May the best teams win (they usually do).

I disagree: Longhorns beat #1 Sooners, Gators will upset LSU, Miss. State upsets Vandy, Gamecocks will derail Wildcats, Penn State beats Wisconsin.
I concur: Dawgs get revenge on Vols, Tech will win big over GW [I hope they can get up for this game], Tarheels beat the Irish, Auburn over Arkansas. Mo. over Okla. St.

I can’t believe that it took this long for the charges to be dropped on Sturdivant and the other guys. That was one of the most rediculous things I’ve ever heard someone being arrested for. Belly rubbing is a crime? Get real. Especially at 1 am in an athletic dorm. LOL! They should arrest the girl now for trying to use those guys for fortune and fame. In fact, that’s how all cases should be handled. If you fraudulantly have charges brought on someone else and you lose the case, YOU do the time! A lot of this nonsense would end.

Farce of a program, VolGuy? This fact nugget from your very own Tennessean on Oct 9 (bottom of Arian Foster’s article)-
Georgia has the SEC’s best record over the past 12 seasons. The Bulldogs are 68-16 (.810) the last seven seasons and 111-33 (.771) during the last 12. Georgia is the only SEC team to be ranked in the FINAL AP Top 25 the last 11 seasons.
If you call that a farce, what are your terms for the other guys, including the Vols? I personally have a lot of respect for your program and many others in the SEC that have a long, proud history. As the pop-culture folks like to say, “Don’t hate, appreciate!” Talk smack if you want, just be realistic. GO DAWGS!
