Will Tennessee make its last stand at Georgia?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five things we learned over the weekend:
1. Georgia had better be ready for Tennessee: Call me crazy, and I’m sure a lot of you will, because what I am about say is just not logical. But I just get this sense that Tennessee is going to come to Athens and play well on Saturday. Yes, the Tennessee offense was bad again in a 13-9 win over Northern Illinois on Saturday night. Nick Stephens started and will probably be the quarterback from now on. He did throw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Denarius Moore but the offense had only nine first downs and converted only 3 of 13 first down opportunities. The negative energy in Knoxville is thick. In fact, I’m going up there to give a speech today and I know I’m going to get a lot of questions about the future of Phillip Fulmer.
But the Tennessee defense is starting to get a little better, holding NIU to only 190 total yards. But the Tennessee defense has yet to face an really good offense (Florida shut its offense down after getting up 17-0). The defense should give the Vols a shot in most games. I could be wrong. Tennessee might come down here and get its doors blown off by a Georgia team that has had a week’s rest. Why do I feel that is not going to happen? Tennessee will come here as a desperate football team. Willl that be enough to keep it competitive?
2. Michael Johnson’s not blowing smoke: Young Johnson said that the only team that could beat Georgia Tech is Georgia Tech. It sounds like bulletin board material but let’s look at that. Georgia Tech beat a very sound Duke team 27-0 on Saturday . Trust me when I tell you that the game was not that close. Georgia Tech dominated the game in the first half and had only three points to show for it. But the Georgia Tech offense is just relentless. It just wears out opponents both physically and mentally. And Coach Paul Johnson showed yet again on Saturday that he will do whatever it takes to win. You want to put eight guys up there to stop the option? He’ll use a true freshman quarterback (Jaybo Shaw) to throw nine passes to Bay-Bay Thomas. But Georgia Tech has a chance to win every game it plays because Johnson has never had a defense this good to back up his offense.
3. Auburn has to go back to the drawing board—again: For two possessions against Vanderbilt Saturday night, Auburn was the Auburn of old. The Tigers lined up in a power formation and just blew the Commodores off the ball. But then Vanderbilt made a couple of adjustments and committed another defender to the run, and suddenly Auburn had no answers. Auburn only had four yards rushing in the second half. Now Vanderbilt has a good defense but only four yards? It’s a good thing for Tommy Tuberville’s team that they are playing Arkansas this week. Auburn has a good offensive line and good running backs and is very average, at best, at quarterback. The offense has to reflect that. Tuberville said that OC Tony Franklin is in charge of the offense and will be given a chance to fix it.
4. Somebody is going to try to hire Bobby Johnson: Vanderbilt plays in the toughest league in the country with a host of financial and academic obstacles that have to be overcome relative to the competition. But here the Commodores sit at 3-0 in the SEC and 5-0 overall. Now the toughest part of the schedule is still ahead but the fact is that Bobby Johnson has done one of his best coaching jobs ever in the first half of this season. A year ago Vanderbilt had Georgia beat and Tennessee beat before letting them slip off the hook in the fourth quarter. Johnson consistently gets as much out of his available talent as any coach in the country. His staff takes a back seat to no other staff in the country. I know Vanderbilt would hate to lose Johnson but you have to figure his name will come up for a high-profile opening.
5. Alabama is human: Yes, Alabama played a sloppy game against Kentucky and managed to win 17-14. If not for Mike Hartline’s fumble deep in Kentucky territory, which Alabama turned into a touchdown, the Crimson Tide could have been beaten at home. But they didn’t lose and are 6-0 heading into an open date this week. But Alabama’s opponents shouldn’t read too much into the near miss against the Wildcats. Alabama still ran for 282 yards (218 by Glen Coffee) against a pretty good defense. The penalties (10) and turnovers (3) just killed the Tide. Kentucky is going to make a bunch of teams struggle. Alabama coach Nick Saban has been riding his team pretty hard but now they get an off week before hosting Ole Miss on Oct. 18. He’ll give them a little love, let them heal up, and start cracking the whip against next week. He’ll remind them that Ole Miss went to The Swamp and won. That is all he’ll need to do.

GA better play a different defensive scheme than last year or TN will march up and down the field again. Pressure this quarterback, get up by 14 early, and cruise to an easy win is what I hope. Let them control the ball and hang around until the 4th quarter is what I fear.

Tony,
David Cuttcliff has owned UGA, he always kept UGA’s D off balance. Boy, am I glad he is gone. UGA will beat UT and here are some reasons why. 1. A week off to prepare. 2. We are at home. 3. UGA has unity on the coaching staff and the team, no matter the circumstances; including the 1st half of the AL game. 4. We have a QB, RB, and a WR.

Tony,
We could use Johnson’s statement about GT for the UGA vs UT Game with a slight twist,” The only way UT beats UGA is if UGA beats UGA”.
The Dawgs should win this one in a ROLL - if not, The Dawgs are in real trouble. Let’s hope Richt and the coaches have them confident about this one. We certainly have the talent to beat UT handily - but will we?

Tony, you’re right. The “Georgia Tech offense is just relentless. It just wears out opponents both physically and mentally.”
GT is a very dangerous team. About the time you thought they were one dimentsional, Bay-Bay comes within a few yards short of setting a single game receiving record—and his QB was a true freshman!
But the toughest part of the schedule is still to come. We’ll see where they are a month from now. But Michael Johnson is right.

If UT gets blown out against the Dawgs, they just might be looking at Coach Johnson (Vandy’s not Tech’s, even though both are doing great this year) to take over their program. UT has not played well this year, but they still have some great athletes on the team.
We shall see how well Tech holds up once they get past GW. But it might be worth noting that their one (3 pt) loss was when they were playing without their best blocker and receiver (one in the same). And I really respect the way Coach Johnson (Tech’s) makes half time adjustments.

I think the game with Tenn. is BIGGER for UGA. Tenn. is not going anywhere this year, and Fulmer knows it. Further, he probably knows this could be the end of the line as coach. That’s why he out flanked the Tenn. Athletic Assoc. and got the big contract renewal this past summer. Just hope he did as well for his assistants. UGA, on the other hand, is the consumate Forrest Gump “Box of Chocolates” team. No one EVER knows what one will get. With a young, new QB, Tenn. will probably try to throw a lot of underneath passes to get confidence up. And, it is obvious UGA cannot, or will, not try to defend these passes. If Tenn. can get a couple of scores early and play defense, it could be trouble for the ‘Dogs. As for UGA, another ugly loss and they become joke material. HOPEFULLY, CMR, staff and players realize it. UGA has the chance to change the growing perception that they are unprepared for big games. Trust CMR et al know the deal.

As a TN fan, I see no way TN wins anymore than one more SEC game. The only way Fulmer will stay in the ball game is to run the ball and control the clock. He’ll look to have an ugly 14-10 ballgame. The only place I like Tennessee in this game is the secondary and DL. If we can pressure Stafford, I think Berry and the boys can make some plays. If TN cannot pressure, it could be a long day for Fulmer and the Vols. If GA does beat TN as expected, it could be a win for TN by helping us get a new coach!

1- There is no way that UGA will not be ready. We have had a week off to let the Alabama game fester… UGA will win this one and it will not be close.
2- And Tech still cannot crack the top 25 ???
3- Well, it looks like Tubby Tommerville can stop counting now. The Tide will embarass them this year.
4- Probably true… You really have to admire this guy as well as ther whole team- And UGA has them on Oct 18 for homecoming……
5- Agree… The test is on Novenber 8 at LSU.

Don’t see our team rolling over Tenn, They will find a way to make a close game of it just like the South Carolina game. Tenn has a bigger offensive line than Alabama did and you all know what a problem that was for us. Think however our team will win in a close one.

Mike has it right. Fulmer will try to keep this a low scoring affair. Look for him to run the clock as much as possible on offense, snappping with only a second or two on the clock to try to keep the score down. If Cut and Ainge were still at UT, no problem. Cut vs. Martinez was a mismatch of epic proportions, but Cut’s at Duke, so Willie has a chance to look good this year. Now, UT doesn’t have a defense like S. Carolina’s, so uga should be able to move the ball a little bit better, but they’d better locate Berry on every play. Georgia wins Saturday, and Fulmer resigns Sunday night or Monday afternoon.

UGA is going to WAX UT this weekend. It will be much like the BAMA-UGA game. Over before the end of the first half.
If there is a worse QB in the country than Chris Todd, I dont want to see him. Watching Todd is painful enough! That AU offense is a disgrace to the D they put on the field.
At first, BAMA looked like they we trying to the their best impressions of UGA (Penalties) and AU (Sputtering offense). Looking back, it was not as much that the O was bad, they just didnt finish when they needed to. BAMA put up almost 400 yards of offense and Coffee is showing he early success is not just luck. Kid is a player. The penalties need to go but with a week off, BAMA should be well rested ot play Ole Siss.

I’m afraid to say that our dawgs aren’t as good as we had previously thought. Sure, we’ve only got one loss, but our lines were manhandled by SC and Bama. Skill position wise, we can stand up to most anyone in the country, but our Oline and Dline are very average. YOUNG….but average. Stafford is playing well, but our running game isn’t producing many home runs against SEC competition. We will have a close game with TN and with a couple of breakdowns, it may get scary. Vandy will be close, we’ll lose badly at LSU and lose a close game at FL. We just aren’t physical enough up front. I hope I am badly mistaken, but it’ll be a nailbiter the rest of the season.

I think GA will have to find a way to be physical with the Tenn. offensive line. ‘Bama hit them hard, and the GA defense did not respond well. If Tenn hits them, GA better hit back.
So many detractors, me included, did not thing Tech would be any good. I like my crow medium well. This offense can certainly cause problems because of the strange scheme and mismatches. I think Tech is a top 25 team right now. But what do I know?
The D is good. The O is awful. Do they give Franklin more than one year? Seems to have the wrong players for the scheme. With Auburn’s talent, this is tough to watch.
No surprise here. We all knew he was good. How do they handle prosperity? As I see the schedule, it looks like MSU, Duke, Tenn are wins, Kentucky is a toss up and GA, FLA & Wake are losses. One thing we have learned, don’t underestimate the ‘Dores.
I simply think ‘Bama is not #2. Top ten for sure. I don’t think ‘Bama wants anything to do with Texas, Missouri or Oklahoma. Too much right now. Saturday showed you can’t leave an inferior team in the game or things get difficult.

The UT game will really tell us alot about the DAWGS. It will be another test against a big offensive line against a team desperate to save their season. IF UGA is really a top team they will come out and take care of business and win easily. If UGA struggles I think it indicate that our strengths in the skills positions cannot overcome how weak we are on the lines. Keep in mind that LSU is as good or better up front than Bama and pressure on Tebow was the difference in last year’s game which is something we have yet to show this year.
Go Dawgs!

Incidentally, my wife is an Auburn grad and the time after the past few Auburn games have not been pretty. I’m still cleaning up the broken dishes thrown at walls and she is using words that I have to Google and find their meaning. I think I’m gonna have to take my college football Saturdays and watch the games somewhere else. It’s downright dangerous at my house when Auburn plays.

1.UGA vs. ut game should not be close. Dawgs had a week off to heal and Richt is usually pretty good when he has 2 weeks to prepare. BUT this young team could be looking to an easy win which allows a desperate UT team to bust them up. It will be yet another sloppy game.
3.auburn has the worst two quarterbacks in the SEC. I predict they will look like Johnny U and Bart Star on…Nov 15!
Bobby Johnson just seems like the perfect fit at Vandy. Hope he stays put. I like Vandy being good.
Bama will probobly run the table. Too physical and the coach is relentless. They are thin so injuries could get em.

Knowshon, while tough as nails, doesn’t have the speed to be a homerun hitter. He is constantly run down from behind and doesn’t have the true breakaway speed. In a 40 yard run he can take angles, but to take one 65 yards to the house isn’t going to happen. 80% of the DB’s in big time college football will run right up his back.

You’ve got to be kidding me “I don’t think ‘Bama wants anything to do with Texas, Missouri or Oklahoma.” You think Bama or any top SEC team is afraid of playing anyone in the Big 12. Or is the fact that Bama actually played a good KY team. It’s funny how last year UGA got slammed by UT and USC and barely beat Vandy and KY but most of the fans thought they should be playing for the National Championship. This year they barely beat USC and the only other decent team they played was Bama but they have no problem in being ranked 10. Again the most un-educated football fans in the country have to be from Georgia. You should stick to you Ga Tech comment “what do I know?”.

UGA will win this game, but it won’t be a blowout. Tennessee’s D is too talented to let that happen. In fact, everywhere but QB TN has solid talent. And don’t forget TN gets back all-SEC punter Britton Colquitt this game. Lest we forget last year’s game - Fulmer and Co. were on the ropes and absolutely throttled an overmatched Georgia team. I like UGA, but Tony is right about this one. This will go to the 4th quarter.

It’s just the opposite. OK, TX nor Missouri are PRAYING to the football gods that LSU and Alabama get a loss and they want nothing to do with playing either SEC team. The Big 12 makes it’s bed just like Ohio State by eating up the little sisters of the poor. They only play 1 or 2 real games all year. In a big game, no one is as good as Saban (Satan) and Les Miles just keeps churning the wins out. Hey Big 12…be afraid….be very afraid.

Ed,
ALL those teams you have named have not faced a defense as good as Alabama’s. To say “Bama don’t want any part of said team” is a totally moronic statement!!!LSU, BAMA, even Auburn would shut those teams down to a snail crawl. Bama is “scared” of NOONE in the country!!!!So stop saying it. Just because your school sux this year or lost to Bama or is totally pi$$ed that VANDY is on top of your division Half way through the season, don’t take it out on BAMA.That score in the Bama game could have easily been 42-14. Penalties, awful officiating, fumbles, missed field goals, stupid mistakes skewed that score.Jones should have had 150+ receiving, he had two catches of 40+ called back for suspect calls. An open week is exactly what this team needs, get rested and healthy, slow down and regroup for the second half of the season. Ole miss in 2 weeks will get took to the woodshed. Bama by 28!!!!

UGA BETTER be ready for UT. UT is probably the worst team in the SECE, yet this game screams trap (UGA’s recent history with the Vols doesn’t help). UGA SHOULD beat the corn out of UT…but….
Tech is NOT a top-25 team (yet). But neither is UNC or (especially!) Auburn, or several others. If UNC belongs in the top 25 (and they don’t), so do Tech and FSU. I agree with Spike (for once)—is Auburn still in the league? Seriously. They’ve been posing in the top 25 for several weeks now.
See above.
Hope not for Vandy’s sake, but someone WILL wave a bunch of cash in his face to say the least. It will not be UT, and he won’t go there.
Could see the SEC lose him to the Big 10 or maybe even UVA if the Maryland game turns out to be a fluke and Groh gets the ax…although UVA probably wouldn’t be enough prestige+$$$ to make the move worthwhile.

Well Ted & saint nick Thanks for ruining a good little conversation with wild assumptions and ridiculous conjecture. If the truth be known, I am a ‘Bama fan. I happen to have a little bit of an objective nature, something which you two certainly do not demonstrate. I don’t think anyone will shut down Missouri, Texas or Oklahoma. Contain maybe, shut down, no. Yet in this era of college football we all know anything can happen.

Go check out the replay of the Missouri game. Then devise a plan to get our playmakers the ball in space. What happened to C King coach? Also, tell Stafford to take it easy and to stop playing so scared. And to make a correct read everyonce in awhile. Offense has been poor this season and had better turn around in a hurry.

Bama wants no part of a team and saying Bama is scared means exactly the same! Twist your optimism whichever way you want to, BUT I remember a team VERY similar to this Tide team “Not having any chance to stay on the same field” with Miami back in 1992. 34-13 A$$ kicking of “the best team in history”.So, if you claim to be a Bama fan, you should look at recent history and say to yourself “SEC IS THE BEST CONFERENCE” year in year out, and the SEC has never lost a BCS title game. If a team from the SEC gets to the title game, WE WILL WIN IT!!!!!!

Having watched UGA waltz around this season, I do not expect a repeat of 2007 because there just isn’t enough leadership and upperclassmen to help this team improve. UGA should beat Tennessee bad, but Richt doesn’t seem (anymore) to be able to motivate his team based on the previous year’s result (or ther factors) and has quickly lost the mental edge to Fulmer and company (the old “we can’t beat Tennessee” that was embedded in Goff’s and Donnan’s teams minds is back). I suspect UGA will win Saturday only because of the two week break and expected UT errors, but will probably look like crap again and win by 3 or 4 points. I also suspect a loss to either Vandy, Kentucky or Ga Tech. LSU and/or Florida along with Auburn make this a likely 8-4, 9-3 season. Why? Terribly thin, inexperienced line of scrimmage. UGA has a chance in 2009 to be special, but with Stafford and Moreno likely gone, it won’t happen. Another SEC East title is still 2-3 years away. Hopefully Richt will make some staff changes after this season, because there is where the “tweaking” is needed along with some infusion of motivational talent.

Muschamp s NOT going to take the job at UT, and UT is NOT going to fire Fulmer. They cannot afford it. UT replaces Fulmer ONLY if he retires, and it isn’t going to be Will Muschamp, a coach with no head coach experience when that day comes. Auburn/Alabama rumors are always a joke. GW my friends in SC are telling me that the fans & IPTAY members want Bobby Johnson not only due to his work at Vandy but also he has past connections to Clemson. However rumor is he’s on Tennessee’s short list as well so it could be a biddign war.
Tony, please give us details on the buyouts for Tommy Bowden & Phillip Fulmer. Then your take on weather either getting fired is a real possibility. Thanks. I’ve heard that combined with assistant coaches it’s like 10mil for Fulmer then you’ve got to pay the new guy as well to me that makes it tough to make a change.
UGA needs to just play ball, look at the X’s & O’s, don’t worry about it being Tennessee. For some reason we’ve struggled with them over the years & it seems to more mental than physical. There desperate but we should be too: desperate to prove we’re better than we showed against AL, desperate to stay in the SEC East race, desperate to avenge the last two blowouts UT put on us. Going into the SC game we talked about just scoring one TD & barely won, if that had been a non conference game then we probably win handily like we did in AZ. So we need to forget about it being UT except for motivational factors then come out & assert ourselves from the start. Hopefully we’ll some adjustments coming of the bye week like we saw last year. On O I’d like to see no huddle, more of Moreno & King on the field together, spread it out early ice it late with the I. On D I’d like to see more 3-3-5 & 4-2-5 while changing up the looks then blitz selectively from all over including zone style stuff. Let’s confuse the young QB & play to our strengths. For me UT is the team I hate the most mainly do to Fulmer so I’d love to see a blowout!

Georgia always seems to get Tennessee’s best game, but here’s a stat for the worriers in the Dawg Nation: 10-2. That Georgia’s record following open weeks under Richt. The two losses were both to Auburn — one in Richt’s first year and the other on the miracle by Devin Aromashido (or however you spell it). Georgia has averaged 29.7 points in those 12 games and the two losses were by a combined 12.4 points. All of which tells me that Richt knows what to do with an open week. I’m not worried.

TruthHurts, Knowshon doesn’t have to take it “65 yards to the house” when five 15 yard runs will do. And by the way, he hits a home run every time he crosses the opponents goal line, which he only accomplished a mere 14 times last year! And since he has already done it ten (10) times in the first five games of this year, I’d say he’s off to a pretty good start. A guy doesn’t have to have 4.4 speed to be succesful, not in any league or at any level. So what’s your point?

UT will be a test for UGA more than UT. UT should be loose, they aren’t going anywhere and they know it. I expect the game to be close, it usually is. Will Fulmer take the offense back and run the ball 50 times? A very lackluster performance by UT, against a weak team using it’s back up QB, but maybe they were preparing for the Dawgs. Auburn is an enigma, I do not understand Tubbs at all. First he says it is AU’s O, not Franklin’s, then he gives up on the run against a team that is last in the SEC in defense. What in the hell was he thinking? AU has three or four good RBs and a line that is bigger and stronger than Vandy’s and stops running the ball in the second quarter, and with a two TD lead. Tubbs lied, I don’t know who’s O was on the field in the second half, but it sure as hell wasn’t Auburn’s! I swear I think Franklin is worse than Clawson, and neither one belongs in the SEC. Hey Tony, I beat You again Friday! I picked them all except FSU and Vandy, even Virginia! That’s 8 and 2 partner! Now, what were You?

Eric1,
I admire your moxie. You are a good fan. For several years I have found myself shouting “Roll Tide Anydamnway!” after having to watch Bama lose. Fair weather fans are a dime a dozen.
As for all of you who question whether Bama deserves their current ranking… Consider this:
Number 1 Oklahoma has beaten: Chattanooga Cincinnati Washington Baylor Texas Christian Combined records of opponents = 12-15
Number 2 LSU has beaten: Appalachian State North Texas Auburn Mississippi State Combined records of opponents = 8-13
Number 3 Missouri has beaten: Illinois Southeastern Missouri State Nevada Buffalo Nebraska Combined records of opponents = 13-13
Number 4 Alabama has beaten: Number 9 Clemson Tulane Western Kentucky Arkansas Number 3 Georgia Kentucky Combined records of opponents = 17-14
Making Bama the only top five team whose opponents combine for a winning record. Also the only top five team to play an undefeated opponent last Saturday.
Number 5 Texas has beaten: Florida Atlantic Texas-El Paso Arkansas Rice Colorado Combined records of opponents = 11-16
I know that I am biased, but I do think that Bama deserves to be in the top five right now. If you disagree, then please explain why?

UGA Fans need to understand. MR and the dawgs will never take control of anybody. All teams under MR do not a have the killer instinct. This is why any team that plays Georgia always seems to hang around. Every team (no matter what division) comes to Sanford Stadium and truely believes it can win. When UGA starts trying to go out and destroy their opponents, then they will not have to worry about theses types of ganes.

I’ll say this as a follow up tp my post. The more I think about it, the more obvious it is. If UGA doesn’t beat Tennessee soundly (two TDs or more), UGA is going to finish 9-3 (8-4 or worse if they lose). If Richt loses a third straight to UT in Sanford (and a 4th time in 5 games), I suspect some “hot seat” talk to start which should lead to some staff changes (remember, Richt was hired to beat UT and UF at least 50% of the time). Fulmer would be a fool not to try and persuade some UGA commits to change their minds on UGA and switch to UT considering he could accurately say he owns Richt and UGA. A sound arse whipping of UT is the only option here, and I suspect Richt realizes the ramifications of this game.

The SEC looks to be a good conference, not great. After watching Saturday, Kentucky and Vandy look like the can compete with anyone in the SEC, that spells AVERAGE TO GOOD, not great. I know you here on this blog love to talk the talk, but your just not walking the walk. I thought Alabama was looking like their old selves until Saturday, now it looks like OU, PENN STATE, MIZZ, TEXAS, USC, maybe even TEXAS TECH would beat them. College Gameday, #2 Ranking, at home:
Alabama 31 Dawgs 0 at half
THE VERY NEXT NEXT WEEK: Alabama 17 Kentucky 14 at Alabama
Kentucky is considered one of the worst teams in the SEC. PROOF Alabama is not that good. Thanks for embarassing us on the national stage, coaches AND players.
College Gameday, Top 25 Ranking, at home:
Vandy 14 Auburn 13
Vandy got the job done. Maybe we need Bobby Johnson and his coaching staff at Georgia, and hell, maybe the players too. AGIAN, thanks for embarassing us on the national stage, coaches AND players.
There is no excuse for coming out flat and getting pummeled by Alabama 31-0 in one half. Alabama wouldn’t do that any other team in Division I-A football, but they did it to GEORGIA.
Let’s see the beatdowns:
2005 WVU 2006 TENN 2007 TENN 2008 ALA
Losing in a good competitive game is one thing, getting beatdown to a point of humiliatuion should be unacceptable. But not at Georgia.
Now that Vandy is in the Top 15, Kentucky played Bama way better than we did, and Tenn has is never a gimme (not even this year with this Georgia team), we could lose every remaining, as unlikely as it is. There are no game I would put $1 on for Georgia to win.

In 2005 Bama played TT in the cotton bowl, TT was scoring the same as this year, they scored 10 points against Bama. Those cute offenses work against overmatched defenses and crap teams, BUT no Big 12 team would score more than 35 against Bama, AU, UGA, Tenn, FLA, LSU. Talented defense players usually commit to SEC schools, so don’t say Big 12 offenses can rack it up against SEC defenses.

31-0 at half???
Well uga fans - I am in a pickle. Why am I in a pickle? …. because I know that the Vols are going to pull the upset on uga this saturday - and I can’t figure out how BOTH TEAMS CAN LOSE this one!!!! HA HA HA HA!!!!
Vols will win a down and dirty slugfest this weekend.
Why am I picking the Vols? - Vols own UGA - last two games were blow outs. Have a mental edge and their back is against the wall.
Vols defense is better than Uga’s. Uga’s defense is just not that good. (Vols offense has been horrible - but will figure out how to score enough against uga as things will click this weekend.)
Uga is young in the wrong places!!! uga skill positions very good - but the game’s outcome is determined on the line - and that is where uga’s weakness is.
Coaching - as I hate to admit this - Fat Phil has been around for a long time for a reason - he and his staff can coach up the talent they have. Look how they won all those tight games last year to win the SEC East - good coaching. Shoot - they almost beat LSU and should have won - if Ainge did not go brain dead and threw that easy pick - TN wins SEC.
Uga - on the other hand - does not coach up it’s athletes - they depend on athletic ability to win. If Uga can not out “athlete” their opponent - they will lose. Scheme wise and coaching - Uga is not impressive.
Bottom Line - TN is not as bad as everyone thinks - defense is quite good - and offense will turn the corner this week.
Uga is a mid pack SEC team - which is not bad considering the SEC - but there are at least 4 teams better than Uga this year in the SEC alone.
BAMA, LSU, Florida are the top 3.
Mark my words - uga will lose to either Vols and Vandy - will lose to LSU and Florida - and will lose to either KY or Auburn if not both. AND MARK MY WORDS - GT will beat uga this year.
As I stated in earlier posts - uga coaching staff has now been exposed - good coaching staffs with talent have figure out uga.
The best thing uga has going for it right now is the fan base and the stadium.

If the Volunteers continue to slide, I think Fat Phil will be given the option to either resigning , or be fired. After that , Tn. will go after Steve Spurrier. Fat Phil always manages to get a top recruiting class, but never can do anything with them..

Do any of you wonder why our coaching staff seems to get very little out of the talent we have. It’s a rare occurence when we have a game plan that is better than our opponent. We will always have “slip ups” like Alabama this year and Tennessee last year unless the coaching staff steps it up.

If he cannot win the SEC at SC, he certainly cannot win one at UT. Fulmer has had one decent recruiting class the past four years. Two were average. Is it true that Auburn is changing the name of Jordan Hare Stadium to “The Barn Yard?”
If Tuberville wanted to trash his program, all he had to do was hire a Tech grad as his offensive coordinator. How about Ted Roof?
Will Tech beat Clemson? It depends on if Tommy Bowden shows up or Tammy Bowden shows up.
I am still laughing my butt off at Arkansas. They run off Houston Nutt and hire that loser Petrino. Now that is a school that should have made a play for Bobby Johnson. If he can win with Vandy academics, think of what he could do at the Arkansas Pre-K school.
I am sure that 95% of the blog readers would like to put Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Bobby Petrino and Steve Spurrier in a rowboat two miles off shore with three life jackets and set the boat on fire. Now I would pay good money to see that. Put it on the big screen and you would have another Sanford Stadium sellout.
And does anybody feel sorry for Fill Up Fulmer? I didn’t think so. Vol fans would throw him under the bus, but it would wreck the bus.

“Do any of you wonder why our coaching staff seems to get very little out of the talent we have. It’s a rare occurence when we have a game plan that is better than our opponent.”
WHAT????? Rare occurence?????? Here is our list of SEC titles: Football (12) 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 2002, 2005
So, in the past 8 years, UGA has won two SEC championships (under these coaches)… clearly they were able to get something out of the talent! UGA is typically in the top half to top quarter of the SEC in the ranking, but we’re not getting anything out of our talent???? Do you realize how difficult it is to just get to the NC in the NCAA????
2007: 11 - 2 (Sugar Bowl Champions) 2006: 9 - 4 (Chik-Fil-a Bowl Champions) 2005: 10 - 3 SEC Champs(lost to W. VA. in Sugar Bowl) 2004: 10 - 2 (Outback Bowl Champions) 2003: 11 - 3 SEC East Champs (Capital One Bowl Champions) 2002: 13 - 1 SEC Champs (Sugar Bowl Champions) 2001: 8 - 4 (Richt’s first year) Top 25 finish.
It looks like we’re getting something out of our talent…

(1) Darn skippy UGA had better be ready for UT. I think they will though. They realize what back to back home losses would do to them and they’ll roll. (2) I’m not ready to give too much credit to gt yet. They may be the best team in their division, but that’s still not saying much. (3) AU is learning really early that the spread won’t hold up. Especially in the SEC. Far too much defensive speed in the conference. Look at West Virginia and Michigan and they don’t even play in the SEC. (4) I agree completely that Johnson will get a big time opportunity after this season. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go to another SEC program. (5) Yes UA is human. All teams are. But they found a way to win. And it’s not like Kentucky is a pushover anymore. Hope UA wins every game until they play UGA again in the SECCG.

I’d love this game to be a UGA administered blowout of pay-back proportions but I don’t see it happening. UT is NOT that bad! They’re struggled due to new QBs and inconsistent offensive play but they also have a new coordinator. I’m glad to see Coach ‘Cut gone because he propped CPF up for years. This should be UGA’s year to open up that proverbial “can” but my vote says the jury is still out on the ‘08 squad. I’ll say it again: UT and Vandy are bellwether games for Georgia. Want to have a great seaon Dawgs? Then look more like you did in Tempe than in Athens the following week! If UGA comes out flat on Saturday and keeps UT around, it’ll be a long day for them.

I guess you were that big fat guy I saw wearing the red “G” shirt, thinking how cool he looked. Funny, we all commented on how pathetic he was. I feel sorry for you.
Also, we made our adjustments at half-time, and came out and executed. We squandered atleast 10 points in the first half with a fumble, and a botched 4th down conversion. PJ made his corrections, and we rolled the rest of the game.

dillweed: I have plenty of class. I think the low class comment you made in your previous post was “You are an idiot.” - That’s classy. (although since you won’t stick with one screen name it’s hard to tell if the first post belonged to you or not)
No, I wasn’t the guy in the red #8 jersey, although it sure was fun to see him in the crowd of yellow. I showed respect to your institution by not wearing my colors.
Also, how do you know I’m male?
My point is that your celebration for a touchdown lasts until, and after, you have kicked the ball off for the next set of downs. It seems silly and excessive to me. Yes, we sing a song. Yes, our cheerleaders do push-ups. But that’s it. It doesn’t continue for an inappropriate amount of time after the TD.
Yes, Tech made adjustments at halftime. That’s the problem… Tech NEEDED to make adjustments at halftime… to beat DUKE. You shouldn’t have to make adjustments to beat Duke. You should just be able to handle them with your “vaunted” offense from the beginning.
One thing I’ll give PJ credit for is the option. It has the potential to be pretty effective… although it wasn’t crazy effective against Duke…
Have a great day!

OCDawg I meant class as in “school”. As in you calling me a dillweed makes you sound like you are in highschool. Halftime adjustments are made every game. Duke is surprisingly improved this season. Yes they are still Dukie, but they have 2 of the best linebackers out there. They have a veteran team, and they aren’t the 1 win team of the years past. Are they still bad? Yes. And like I said, we left atleast 10 points on the field in the first half.
Duke has seen that offense more than most teams, and yes, it wasn’t crazy effective, but still VERY effective (400+yards). But we were also running our backup QB, and while he might run the offense smoother, he is just not the playmaker that Nesbitt is. He doesn’t have the same breakaway speed and size.
Im sorry that you feel our song after the TD is too long. I will admit that I wish we had something better to do right after the ball is kicked than “BUZZZZZZZZZ”. Although I hate listening to the barking, it is certainly louder, more intimidating during kickoff than “BUZZZZZZ”.
And I use different names b/c people on here hijack them all the time.

The fact of the matter is Georgia didn’t show up in the first half and it was too late to dig it self out of 31 point deficit. However, after watching so many sec games I concluded Georgia is the best team in the SEC and yes better than Alabama. and beside, Alabama had only 90 Yards rushing against Georgia and if it wasn’t for the personal foul after we recovered your fumble the scoreboard could be very much reversed. the bottom line is talk is cheap and doesnt prove anything, we have a chip on our shoulder and the only way to prove Georgia is the best team is by beating the crap out of everybody and we will. go dawgs

Once again the Georgia faithful doubt their own team. Well, this Saturday will prove to be the biggest shilacking put on Tennessee since the Herschel Walker era. 44 to 0 is not at all impossible on this one. Thanks Chip for an excellent article. If UGA loses to this Tennessee team, coach Richt and all his coaches should resign at once and forfeit all future compensation. UT is rebuilding and we’re contending for a national championship. If we can’t get up for this game, especially after getting blown out the last 2 years, then CMR, etal, don’t deserve to coach. We should win 35 to 14, but if we lose, it will be the result of our divison II defense taught by Willie “I’m waaaaaaay over my head” Martinez. Go dawgs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roswell Ed, how in the hell do you figure that AU is better than UGA? We’ve had your number for the past few years and the only team to beat us this year is now #2 in the country. Is there a single stat that you can base such a rediculous post? Just because you like Auburn doesn’t make Auburn a better football team. Their record and their stats prove otherwise. GO DAWGS!

Georgia could end up looking like a bunch of whimps if they don’t watch it. One UT player said the Vols Offense will get healthy this Saturday against UGA and he actually means it.
UT and the media have already started ” The world against the Vols/Fulmer theme” same as last year when they kicked The Dawgs fannies.
So After the Alabama whooping… I am interested to see just how good Georgia really is … are the Dawgs over-rated? I hope Georgia has some urgency this week they will need it. “GO Dawgs”

BLOWOUT???? THESE MUST BE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO WERE GOING TO BUY THEIR TIX TO MIAMI IN AUGUST.
i repeat myself from two weeks ago.
GEORGIA HAS NO POWER RUNNING GAME.
GEORGIA HAS NO PASS RUSH.
HOW CAN YOU EXPECT TO WIN IN THE SEC WITHOUT EITHER OF THOSE?
WITHOUT EITHER ONE OF THOSE, PLUS ALL THESE PENALTIES, COMBINED WITH CWM’S UNWILLINGNESS TO BLITZ, AND BOBO’S LOVE OF SEEING STAFFORD THROWING LONG BOMBS INCOMPLETE, WE ARE IN FOR ANOTHER LONG DAY, PEOPLE.

What is the point spread today? Tennessee RARELY beats the spread unless it is an UPSET. Will the Bulldogs look more like poodles this week? Maybe they should wear there white jersies like poodles. Maybe Smokey will give them a bone of their own!

Are ya’ll kidding??? I tend to be cautious with picking Dawg wins…but UT just scraped by NIU!!! NIU is an average MAC team…same conference as CMU which we destroyed. Don’t forget the “revenge” factor is in our favor this time around plus the bye week…

Why is it in big games Richt gets out scheme. Maybe its just me not sure. They always play better in the 2nd half but if there down there offense is not a comeback form behind offense. Lets hope they don’t fall behind early this week.

OCdawg, You weren’t at the Tech-Duke game because if you were you would have been impressed. You probably weren’t impressed with UA either when they stomped the cr@p out of GA. If GA is ranked #11, Tech should be ranked #3. Know -show. Black-out.Stop it you’re killing me.

I can’t believe you actually just said “Tennessee held NIU to only 190 yards.”
When you’re talking smack about Northern Illinois, you know you’ve got issues.
Face it SEC, you’re not as grand as you think.

Tony - I agree Bobby Johnson is a great coach. However, you claimed last year that no coach gets more out of less than your beloved Houston Nutt. Which is it? If I had to choose I would take Johnson, who by the way is 2-1 vs. Nutt. Also, if Nutt is so great then why can his team win at Florida and lose at home to a bad South Carolina team? Also, why do you think Arkansas is so bad this year? Your beloved Houston didn’t recruit well at all.

I have said all along we are one year away.We can still win the NC if we can beat the teams left on our schedule since they are all inferior creampuffs anyway.

Even when the season started, have thought we’d get everybody’s best shot week in ; week out. We’ll all seen SC; TENN ; ALA , etc., have some suspect games so far this season, but we get their A game it seems ( & will from TENN I’m betting ). It likely won’t end throughout the season …… & with VANDY surprising all ….. LSU ; FLA ; KY ; AUB & GT, it will be a huge challenge. At this point, if we lose only 1 more, we couldn’t complain about where we land in the standings, IMO.

Big Bug, sorry, but I was at the game, and it was like watching a high school team. Not impressive.
On the contrary, I was truly impressed with Bama. They came out and played smash-mouth football and beat my Dawgs outright. Tech, on the other hand, muddled through a very sloppy win over a less than spectacular Duke team.
I’m sorry you have such SEC envy, but Tech can’t even crack the top 25, so take your #3 crap, sit down and shut up.
Have a nice day.

UT wouldn’t hire Bobby Johnson if he were the last coach on Earth. UT alums hate Vandy like poison. It would be like Georgia hiring Paul Johnson after he goes 7-3 against them the next 10 years.

Auburn is at a low ebb , not a good hire on the spread and bad attitude in the dressing room. My only comment of week…Hope we can rebound, if not, hello 7-5 or 6-6 season.

The thing I don’t understand is all this Moreno and Stafford will PROBABLY go pro after this year crap.Based on what?Look I am a DAWG fan to the core I love all our kids but to be frank where is this hype coming from?Knowshon has only played 1season and I seriously doubt with the line play so far that he will even end up with as many yards rushing as he had last year so what makes you think he will be a top 10 or 1st rd pick for that matter?Name me the last soph running back redshirt or not drafted in the 1st rd of the NFL draft!!As for Stafford he may have shown a strong arm in his career so far but that’s about it…his accuracy on a lot of pro level throws leaves a lot to be desired..Now SOME of this can be attributed to shaky OL play but he can be erratic when he has time to throw the ball. The season is not over so we will see how he finish up this year but right now all hype aside… David Greene and Quincy Carter hell DJ Shockley were better quarterbacks than Stafford so far!!

We’re gonna beat Georgia, even if it’s by 1 point, look at how they did against Alabama and South Carolina. I like Georgia and I’m a big fan of the Dawgs, but I bleed Orange and White. The Vols might not have done as well and hoped and expected, but we are still the best team in College Football! Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eric Berry for Heisman!!!!!!!!!

Oconee Dawg & others who degrade Tech & the ACC., I’ll repeat a post from elsewhere: The following graphic and comments were noted on Raycom TV during the GT-BC game: “MORE PLAYERS WERE DRAFTED FROM THE ACC, 115, OVER THE PAST 3 YEARS THAN FROM ANY OTHER CONFERENCE! THIS INCLUDES THE #1, 2, AND 3 PICKS: MATT RYAN, BC; CALVIN JOHNSON, GT; AND MARIO WILLIAMS, NC STATE!”

Georgia has way better offense, defense and special teams than Tennessee. Tennessee beat us the last 2 years. not because Tennessee was a better team (just look at record), its because our Dummass Defensive Cord. martinez couldn’t have his D ready for Tenn. for some reason he is very easy to be figured out by Tenn. Tennessee could have stolen the D signals of Georgia, did anybody thought about this!!!!!?

Randy is an idiot and his comment about Obama should be removed from this site.
As for the UT-Georgia game, I see Georgia winning this one by a wide margin. The Vols have played poorly all season and seem to lack the ability to put together a good game. Georgia has had two weeks to heal wounds and prepare for this game. Also, having been embarassed by Alabama, Georgia wants badly to get back on track. Georgia wins big.

As a Tn fan, you never want to see your team get beat, but if losing to Ga is what it take to get Fulmer fired, then I hope Ga put a big case of whup a** on them. Fulmer has got to go!! He’s probably one of the worst coaches in the country and this good ole boY crap is getting old. GET OUT PHAT PHIL.
