Bouncing back from Bama won’t be easy for Dawgs

Five things we learned over the weekend:

1. Bouncing back from Bama won’t be easy for Dawgs: Physically, the Bulldogs need a break after getting beat up pretty good by Alabama. Alabama is a team that will punish everybody and Georgia certainly had the battle scars on Sunday. But I believe the more important aspect of this bye week is mental. It takes time for a good team—and Georgia is still a very good team—to get over being physically dominated the way the Bulldogs were on Saturday night. Clemson, I would suggest to you, still hasn’t gotten over its 34-10 beat down by Alabama yet. That kind of loss does something to the psyche of a team, particularly a team that had national championship aspirations. What Georgia needs to do now is pretty simple: Quit thinking about national rankings, the BCS, College Game Day and focus on the task at hand, which is beating Tennessee at home on Oct. 11. Georgia still controls its own destiny in the SEC East and if the Bulldogs take care of business, they may get another shot at Alabama in the Georgia Dome on Dec. 6.

2. Bama is back: Coach Nick Saban doesn’t want to hear this. He is a process guy and not a results guy. He doesn’t want to hear about his team being hyped in the media because he knows that Alabama could easily pull a Florida and get beat because they weren’t quite ready to play. But here is what I saw Saturday night at Sanford Stadium. After last year’s collapse in the second half of the season, Alabama has gotten better in all of the right places. The offensive line, which was hurt with suspensions and injury last season, is a veteran group that bulldozes opponents. They have upgraded at running back (Mark Ingram), wide receiver (Julio Jones, B.J. Scott), and are putting John Parker Wilson in much better positions to be successful. The defense is ridiculous. As a friend told me Saturday night, Alabama plays fast and with a lot of hunger. The only question that remains is how the Crimson Tide will handle success, which has been an issue for quite some time.

3. Tennessee needs to change quarterbacks—now: The reason that Jonathan Crompton has continued to be Tennessee’s starting quarterback is that he is the best player the Vols have at the position. If Nick Stephens or B.J. Coleman were doing anything better than Crompton in practice they would be playing. But there comes a point in a season where you have to make a change simply for the sake of change. Steve Spurrier did it this week at South Carolina with Stephen Garcia. Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said Sunday that he was opening the quarterback competition to Crompton and Stephens. They will split the reps at No. 1 and the coaches will chart every play. The quarterback who does the best in practice will start against Northern Illinois. I would maintain that unless the performance gap in practice is huge, Fulmer needs to give Stephens a shot. Tennessee needs an infusion of optimism after suffering through so many mistakes in four games. If Stephens doesn’t work out, then Fulmer has to live with it. But when the offense is playing this poorly and the play at quarterback is so clearly inconsistent, you have to do something. Tennessee needs to give its fans hope for the Oct. 11 trip Georgia.

4. You don’t tug on Superman’s cape: Florida’s Tim Tebow had a bad game against Ole Miss with a couple of key turnovers in the 31-30 loss in The Swamp. Tebow was his usual classy self by taking all of the blame for the loss and vowing to do better. But when you give up 31 points at home to a team that has lost to Wake Forest and Vanderbilt, you have to say that it was a pure team loss by the Gators. Tebow, who is one of the most competitive people you’ll ever meet, says he will work harder than ever to make sure this doesn’t happen again. I really would not want to be Arkansas this week. But I stick to what I said after Florida beat Miami. The Gators have to develop a tailback that can run between the tackles. They got stuffed on a fourth and one at the end of the Ole Miss game because the whole world knew that No. 15 (Tebow) was going to run the ball.

5. Georgia Tech-Duke could be for ACC Coach of the Year: Yes, it’s early. But consider this: Going into this season nobody talked about Georgia Tech as a serious contender in the ACC Coastal or as a bowl team. A win Saturday over Duke gives Paul Johnson’s team a 4-1 record with seven games left to play. In the 2005, 2006, and 2007 seasons COMBINED, Duke won a grand total of three football games.David Cutcliffe has led the Blue Devils to victories in three of their first four games this season. The only loss was to Northwestern (24-0), a team that is 5-0. Cutcliffe has Duke playing with confidence and even with a little bit of an attitude. So the winner of Saturday’s game at Bobby Dodd Stadium should be the early favorite for ACC coach of the year.

Tony…please don’t look in a mirror. Why? Because you will see a fool looking back at you. USC will go undefeated?!?! HA!! Georgia will be back at #1?!?! HA!! Sec is by far the best conference?!?! HA!! YOU MAKE ABOUT AS MUCH SENSE AS THE BCS (WHICH IS TO SAY THAT YOU ARE AN IDIOT). In fact, one might say you are the Chan Gailey of sports writers.

Anthony,

At the conclusion of the 2007 college football season, the Atlanta media started the PR hype for UGA as the 2008 National Champion. Be careful of what the media is feeding you or else you have might smoke blow up your back side. Last week thus said the AJC, “you wanted a Statement Game? … You wanted some assurance that the Bulldogs belong in the upper tier of the rankings? Here it was.” Well beating a Pac Ten pansy who lost at home to UNLV (what conference are they in?) does not a Statement Game make.

With hated rival Florida having gone down to defeat earlier in the day, with the # 1 ranking there for the taking, with an opponent that GA defeated last season on the road, with the marquee match up of the day, with Game Day on campus, Georgia went out and laid the biggest first half turd in school in school history.

Now GA is facing a run the table for the remainder of the season or else delivers the Mother of disappointment of a season.

PS - the STATEMENT that GA made on Saturday is that they are not as good as they have been made out to be.

1) One game at a time still needs preached.

2) Perhaps the most physical domination by a opponents defesne in Sanford Stadium history. VERY FAST, VERY STRONGMVERY AGGRESSIVE.

3) The OC may be one and done in the land of Orange

4) Thank god Florida lost. The only thing that salvaged the college football weekend for this UGA fan.

5) We are talking Duke? Duke football? Heading off to my bunker because hell must have froze over!

  1. I wondered if it helped ‘Bama to play this game on the road. Sometimes it helps to circle your wagons, play against the world. GA may have been distracted a tad. No matter what the coaches say or preach, there is no way to completely prevent kids from getting distracted by all that was going on.

  2. I don’t think ‘Bama is the #2 team in the country. They are good, but not #2. I may be wrong-it happens often. I do not think anyone wants to play Missouri right now. ‘Bama is an injury or two away from really struggling. However, if the luck holds…..

  3. In my opinion, they don’t quite know what to do in Knoxville. The D is still pretty good, the O stinks, and the coaching looks stagnant. Auburn did everything they could to give that game away and Tenn. did not take it. Chaos is not far away.

  4. I think you are right. Too much reliance on one guy. It looks like Archie Griffin is safe for now.

  5. Would you have said this prior to the year? This shows just how good Cutcliffe is, and shows how strong Johnson is as well. Just in my opinion, Cutcliffe has a slight edge just because it is Duke. Their talent level does not even come close to that on the Tech team.

Thanks for your thoughts Tony.

As I said prior to the season…..Tim Tebow has yet to win a big game. As a matter of fact UF is a measley 6-4 in their last 10 games. Where is the heaty on Urban? Where is the heat on Richt for such lousy prep. in the real big games? And oh yea, good to see UGA uphold it’s ranking in the “obnoxious fan” category. Although they could take over the outright lead.

The stats from the game don’t support your assertion that the Bama OL bulldozes people - 129 yards rushing is not a scary thing Tony. We were usually in the wrong defensive formation or Alabama was checking off due to our set up. You can’t really blame the first RTP penalty on anyone - that stuff happens. The same can be said about the fumble/interception on the pass to AJ. Those two things had a great effect on the outcome of this game! Stafford had to throw into double coverage all night because of the way Bama ran cover two and three and had their safeties playing 18 yards off the ball.

We are not dead - I was ready to give up last year but these guys made a statement and took us all the way to 2nd in the final polls. Don’t be like your cohorts Bradley and Schultz - their heels are bruised from jumping onto and off of bandwagons so much.

Urban Meyer and Dan Mullen are the worst play calling tandem in college football. Why run Tebow on 4th and one when everybody and their grandmother knew he was going to run it? And what was the deal in the 1st quarter when they decided against the field goal and went for it on 4th down and didn’t make it? Jeez, and they pay this guy Meyer over $4 million a year? He needs to scrap that horrible spread offense. The only reason Fla was successful in the BCS game in ‘06 was due to the fact Leak was running a scaled back version of the spread. We now see what it really is…crap. Maybe Meyer should steal Saban’s playbook. That Alabama offense was the most impressive college offense I’ve seen in a long, long time. Poised, polished, well oiled and unpredictable. I’m not a Nick Saban fan, but the man can coach.

Richt is not about to grab anyone by the face mask, even when they beat up 150 pound college students and destroy property in a hospital. The fact of the matter is, Richt, Adams, Sonny Perdue, and the Atlanta papers began hyping Georgia toward the end of the last season. They were not that good. They nearly lost to Vandy, beat UF because Tebow was injured, and beat Auburn because a bad QB kept turning the ball over at critical times. Richt’s players behave as they wish, both on and off the field, with winks and slaps on the wrist. They have tantrums on the field and jaw at the coach if they don’t like his decisions. When Richt promotes unsportsmanlike conduct, you can hardly expect the players not to follow his example. Richt has set the standard for behavior, and it cannot be turned around in the short run. Richt is not the saint that he pretends to be. At least players feared Barry Switzer and Jackie Sherrell. The whippings will continue.

1 & 2 UGA will bounce back and the young line will gel. Bama has upgraded their wrs, but their veteran O and D lines and a senior QB are most important. They are thin, but iF they can avoid the injusy bug they will be successful. AU and LSU have good Ds, maybe as good as Bama, but their offenses are pedistrian. UGA still looks as good as any team the east, except Vandy? Has hell frozen over? 3 UT is in trouble, 1 and 3, 0 and 2 SEC, those numbers get coaches fired at Ole Miss. Good thing for Fulmer that N Ill is coming, but beating them and UAB will not save His job. I don’t think changing QBs will do the trick, the whole offense needs to be scrapped. It seems that Clawson has been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. UT has the players to run a SEC power O, and new QBs, it is hard to make these guys click in a complicated west coast scheme. That being said, the Dawgs need to be careful, Fulmer is a dangerous man when his back’s against the wall. 4- Tony is right that Tebow didn’t give up 31 points, but Ole Miss had plenty of help from Gator miscues. Yes everybody knew that Tebow was getting the ball on that fourth and one, but then again Tebow is UFs bread and butter in short yardage. When Your bread and butter plays are stuffed You know Your O is in trouble. I would not call that a bad call by UFs coaches. I will say that the Gator O looks out of sync so far this year. Their D looks ok, but Meyer has never been known as a defense minded coach. His O just isn’t scoring enough points, considering their competition. 5- T. Bowden managed another Clemson loss to an inferior team, he is the coach that should be on the hot seat, not Fulmer. Now Tech and Duke will play for top spots in the ACC, it’s official, hell has frozen over!

That was a great victory for the crimson tide. If Bama is a contender for the sec championship they need to get better with the special teams and shore up the defense backfield. Giving up those 2 cheap touchdowns at the end of the game was terrible!! But they are a lot better than last year. Give Saban credit for having the team ready to play against the dawgs and maybe they can win the sec. Bama is not the 2nd best team in the country, they are a top ten team, but they have to beat Lsu and the cow college and that will hard to do!! ROLL TIDE!!

As most of us thought, UGA got it’s annual butt whipping, but it came a bit earlier that we all thought it would. That doesn’t bode too well for the red and black for the rest of the year…can you say overrated? UT couldn’t beat OFF with Crompton at QB. If Fulmer wants to salvage his season (and maybe his job) he better have Stephens at QB this week…

Tony

When was the last time that UGA, Florida, and Tennessee all lost on the same day during the regular season? Which means that SEC East didn’t change much this weekend. Vandy was the biggest winner of the Alabama win over UGA.

I think that UGA still has a shot at the SEC title if they can make it to Atlanta. Beating a team twice (whether it be Alabama beating UGA twice or UGA beating LSU twice or vice versa) will be tough.

We knew that the SEC was tough. Now you see the SEC west showing some strength besides LSU and Auburn. It is actually good for the conference as a whole to have both divisions competitive. Strength of schedule is better as opposed to Wisconsin losing to a pretty bad Michigan team or Southern Cal losing to Oregon State.

My point is that the sky isn’t falling, chicken little.

Atlanta (SEC championship game) is still possible.

I’ve got a lighter I’m willing to donate to burn those black jerseys once and for all. Also, no more “black outs”; egg shows up to well on black. Plus, it’s a cheap copy of Penn State’s “White Out” which looks a hell of a lot better (and apparently works a lot better too).

Another Ed,

No, it doesn’t matter. Alabama plays on the same football field no matter where the stadium happens to be. They have been taught well to rise above the distractions.

I am not one who complained about Georgia’s “blackout”. These things are fun for the players and the fans and that’s part of what is so great about college football. But the game is played by the players, not the fans.

Tradition doesn’t create great football — great football creates the tradition.

Nick Saban understands this and while he respects the tradition of the Crimson Tide football program, he is not intimidated by it. He knows how it came about and he is determined to bring back the attitude and the work ethic that builds a tradition.

Bama is not playing fancy football. The players are manning up and doing their jobs and they are counting on the other players to do theirs. You have to have good players to compete at the highest level and Bama is getting some of the best players now. But the strength of the Crimson Tide’s team-first attitude is greater than the strength of any individual player. Alabama has never brought home a Heisman Trophy, but they have racked up quite a few Championship Rings.

You are correct in saying that key injuries could seriously harm the Crimson Tide. That is true for any team. Injuries are hurting Georgia right now. Lack of depth is what sunk Bama’s championship hopes in 2005.

There are many teams that would have quit after the first half of that game was over. I admire the grit of the Dawgs. They continued to fight the good fight until the last second ticked off of the game clock.

Georgia has a very good football team and this season is far from over. I said after our loss last year that Georgia has a great football program and a great Southern football tradition. I stand by that statement this year. It was an honor to compete with the Dawgs. If we meet again in December, it will be another classic SEC battle.

Before I go, I want to mention John Parker Wilson. This young man has endured playing under two different Head Coaches and three different Offensive Coordinators in his tenure at the Capstone.

He has been battered like a rag-doll at times while struggling to perform behind an inadequately manned Offensive Line. He has weathered the criticism of the fans and never complained as he often shouldered the blame for the past failures of the Bama Offense.

He was under a great deal of pressure coming into this game. He stepped onto the home field of the probable Number 1 team in the nation Saturday night with a mission to stand and deliver for his team.

I think that he deserves a lot of credit for his performance. Stand and Deliver he did…

RTR!!!

Tony, I disagree with your statement about UGA forgetting about BCS, etc. From day one Coach Richt and his players have made the statement to you and your scribe brethren that their focus has, is and always will be shooting for winning the SEC East. As they have stated that… this is the one thing they CAN control. The other aspects they will let develop as they are inclined to. Either you have opted to ignore this or are taking advantage of this loss to create a line that fits your objective. I think Coach Richt, his staff and the UGA players have a pretty good track record of “rising from the ashes” of other bitter losses and I don’t expect this to change this year. Unlike CLemson who never fought back in their loss you have to admit the GA team kept scrapping for 60 minutes and had the Tide sweating a bit in the second half.

I told you dawg fans you were going down; that you were delusional about your team and you were not giving enough credit to the Tide.

I’ve been knowing this was going to happen even before the Clemson game and trying to tell you Dawg fans what was coming then and up till the game. You shouldn’t been talking all that smack because you were setting yourselves up for a hard fall.

Yet still, a few of you are still delusional after we buried your team in it’s own house. Your still in denial after your team got embarrased and still will not give the Tide credit for the beat down it gave your bulldogs. 31-0 in the first half. The blackout didn’t help, winning one for Munson didn’t help, with all that was on the line nothing helped. Knowshon did not run wild and they didn’t stop nothing.

Your team didn’t quit like Clemson though, and I knew they wouldn’t. You have a good team, I recognize that. It’s time you and everyone else recognize that the Tide is rolling and is back and order is restored or at least will be, by the end of the season.

I know everything will take care of itself and it’s the SEC and on any given Saturday… The seasons got a long way to go and I appreciate being number #2, I think we deserve the #1 because we’ve certainly proved it against better opponets than OU, but that’s ok because I like us to be the hunter and hungry.

Tony, you ARE the Chan Gailey of sports writing. Inconsistent, uninspiring.

You can now officially refer to me as MR. NOBODY. As you wrote, “Going into this season nobody talked about Georgia Tech as a serious contender in the ACC Coastal or as a bowl team.”

Tony, it has been YOU and all the other sports writing “journalists” at the AJC, CNNSI, ESPN, etc. that were consistenly predicting: Clemson & VT to dominate the ACC; Clemson to win the ACC in convincing fashion; and GT to finish at/near the bottom of the ACC. Anybody remember the Clemson ACC Champion kool-aid sports-writing orgy after the ACC meeting in July?? Pitiful. This passes for “journalism?”

I, and a few other dedicated GT fans were the only ones repeatedly PREDICTING way back in early August that GT would win the Coastal and play for the ACC title. I also said GT was GUARANTEED the Gator Bowl at a minimum, and that a trip to the Orange Bowl as ACC Champ was a strong possibility. I also repeatedly stated many times, many weeks ago, that Paul Johnson WILL BE crowned Coach of the Year.

Tony, you are hereby given the top award from the Chan Gailey School of Sports Journalism from all of us “Nobody’s.”

Bama smacked GA in the face pretty good on Saturday. That was saturday. It’s over nothing else can be done about it. The Bulldogs will no longer be a factor in the “media” eye and that is a great thing. The less media the better they paly. The problems on both LOS for GA was throughly exposed. They got smackled in the face, didn’t know what happens and when the awoke it was way too late. Lesson learned moved on. GA is a DAMN good team so let all of the jokes fly this week, get them all out becasue it’s just SEPTEMBER!!! I remeber GA laying an egg last season within the division and still was the “hottest” team at the end of last season and we all know how crazy that season was. Isn’t funny that the SAME weekend this College Football stuff got crazy last season it goes crazy this season. Tighten up your seltbelts, it’s about to get a little more crazier. Alabama and Oklahoma and the “new” “can’t be beat champions” for this week. Asswhipping make you mad, make you p** and sometimes bring you down off a high you really shouldn’t be on.GA is fly under the radar team, nothing wrong with that. GA lost, at home, at night, with ESPN in town, Blackout and all and got WHIPPED!!! Bama gets all my credit but somebody had to bring GA down including themselves with the yellow flags all. Week off, get healed, get the mental in gear and go out and handle biz in the second half of the season, trust and believe Oklahoma, Bama and Penn State everybody else in the SEC and BIG 12 will beat everybody up, who survies is the question. Tony, In regards to UF their offense is basically Harvin and Tebow. At the rate that they are having to lean on Harvin he will be so beat up that he will be rendered useless by late season. For all the hype about their team speed they did not show any ability to stretch the field against Ole Miss. The only routes they were successful with were underneath crossing routes by Harvin that created matchups with LB’s. One has to really start questioning the “Spread O” in this league and will it have any lasting effect. Go ask the Auburn fans how excited they are now. I, for one, have had and continue to have my doubts.

The ONLY sweating Bama did was driving it 80 in the fourth and punching UGA in the mouth for an 11 point lead. After the half, Bama was not concerned about losing that football game. BUT, if it makes that fat lip feel better after being punched in it, so be it.

Hey True Crimson

I am a ‘Bama fan through and through. I was incredibly impressed with Saturday night-at least the first half. I was simply saying that there is a strong probability that all the stuff surrounding the game did distract the GA players. I doubt any team would not have some issues with all that was going on around that game.

There are a couple of possibilities to explain what happened Saturday night:

  1. ‘Bama is just head and shoulders better than GA.

  2. GA is simply awful.

  3. The stars were all aligned perfectly and everything went right during the first half and then the hole was too deep to dig out of completely.

I figure #3 is closer to reality than the other 2.

All that said, let’s just enjoy the ride, and the Tide.

This probably sounds a little silly coming off a weekend where they demolished the then #3 team in the country, but I am still a bit skeptical of Bama. Here me now and believe me later, this team will cool off. This is still a very young team. They will blow their load and trip up somewhere along the way. This is college football in 2008. More importantly, this is SEC football in 2008. Alabama has made it look way too easy. It is never that easy. If something seems too good to be true it probably is. Alabama is going to get brought back down to earth…

Not allowing Tebow to run the ball (as he has done in the past) weakens the Florida offense and aids the defensive strategy of any team the Gators face. Tebow is a complete football player and thus he should be allowed to exploit all his talent. Some people say he’ll get hurt, but that’s the risk you take when you play football. The only thing that is hurt right now, however, is Florida’s team when Tebow is not allowed to play to his full potential.

shane#1, Howdy pard! Man it was a tough week for both of us. I can only say keep the faith. Remember, repeat games tend to go the other way from the first one so don’t give up. If UGA earns a rematch come Dec. then they will have some film ugly as it will be to remind them of what went wrong. No doubt Saban has some horses to let run now but they have to see how they deal with the publicity now.

I would hope that SEC fans realize that they too can lose games no matter who they are or who they’re playin’. So remember that before crackin’ on other teams when y’all have some chinks in your armor too.

Bamafan, Great game dude! That was a very impressive showing, I thought that Bama would hang tough but in the end I thought UGA would prevail. Y’all came out and smacked ‘em in the mouth and they didn’t knwo what to do. Congrats!!

Corso said it best on “Game Day”. UF’s offense is not very good. It is a bunch of good athelets running around trying to make a play. If you want to dominate you have to have an offensive line that can move the D line four yards a crack. UF’s OL can’t do that. I no real fan of Tebow. I watched him in high school at both TC and Nease. He has a strong arm but is not very accurate. Unlike Stafford he doesn’t throw a tight spiral. Saturday, he missed two open receivers spliting the safeties because the ball was poorly thrown. I agree with Bull-Gator, we won in 2006 because we got it blocked against OSU and Leak was steady. There was much talk about the Gators blowing out UT but after watching the game twice it was more a luck out than a blow out.

Tim put the trophy in the closet and work on throwing the ball!!!

Go Gators!!!

Tim please put your trophy in the closet and concentrate on throwing the ball.

Bama LIKE IT OR NOT is the most complete team in the SEC. Auburn has a good defense, BUT horrendous on Offense. LSU’s Defense is not as good as advertised. If Miss ST. scores that much on your defense…….crickets.Les Kilometers used up all his “get out of jail free” cards last year. Bama WILL double dip in the dome, and probably play FLA. Ole Miss will finish second in the west.Auburn loses 5 this year(and get blown out by GA and Bama).

The Dawgs aren’t as bad as the first half and Bama’s not (THAT) good—as they showed in the first half. UGA stuffed their run pretty good, but JP Wilson was able to throw those short sideline passes enough to march down the field—and of course penalties were a huge part of this game. UGA needs to clean that up in a hurry. ‘Bama and the rest of the conference is too good for UGA to help them out.

As for GT, who the frig CARES about their little run?!?! Go to your own blog. I don’t even read your scores and don’t watch, listen, or pay attention until—guess what week…

I haven’t seen anything quite like that Touchdown pass to Julio Jones since Sullivan and Beasley played at Auburn.

I’m glad that Bama has had an effective running game, but it doesn’t allow us to see much of the passing game.

UGA will bounce back. Tennessee should be soda crackers and ginger ale for a sick stomach. Besides, CMR and the Dogs are a much tougher bunch mentally than Tammy Bowden and Auburn With A Lake.

Props to UGA for not giving up in the second half. There’s your recovery right there.

Prediction: UGA opens a big can of whoop-@$$ on Phat Phil and crew.

Keep your heads up—hope you win all the rest but the one after Thanksgiving.

Good call on GT-Puke being the early predictor of the ACC COTY. Tech wins, but Puke gives Tech a ball game. If the line is Tech by 14, take Duke and the points. Duke has the inside track to the Smurf Turf.

This injury bug at UGA really has me concerned. We lose Sturdivant, Owens, Figgins, Southerland, Chandler. This bug thing some seasons grows like a cancer and cannot be stopped. I’ve heard were moving Kiante Tripp to TE, were in big trouble from here on out guys. Plus Stafford looks scared to death behind that high school offensive like. He never stepped up in the pocket one time last night. I hate to say this but I think were looking at 8-4. ps…where are all these studs we have been recruiting on the D line? We get no pressure which a decent qb can just pick us apart.

Tony,

Once again, you forget there are a lot of Clemson people in the Atlanta market. You quietly left out any mention of the end of the Tommy Bowden era in Clemson. This is his 10th year, and he has made a ton of money up there, so I would think that is a pretty significant story.

Alas, we’ve been on this same highway for 9 years and I don’t understand how anyone (sportswriters, fans, et al) thought it would suddenly change in year 10. With games away at Wake, BC, FSU, and home games against GT and South Carolina, there is no way Clemson comes out of that without 2 more losses. Throw in that 8-4 record, about 5 guys who will get drafted in the first 3 rounds next year and having been the preseason favorite, and that will get you dismissed.

I’m sure though that the Gamecocks and all the other ACC teams will make an end run around the administration and start a “Keep Tommy Bowden Fund.”

BAMA WON. Congrats to the Tide for a great win and their #2 ranking. Here are some facts to look at that finally caught up to us. In the first seven games in 2007, before the Florida game , the Dawgs were penalized 43 times and their opponents were penalized 45 times. After the celebration on the field at Florida, in the next 11 games, the Dawgs have been penalized 104 time and the opponents 62 times. Coincidence or not. You tell me.

For all you doom-n-gloomers, all you naysayers and all you frustrated fans from other SEC east schools with nothing more to look forward to than the predicted demise of the dawgs, just remember this… last year at this point we had lost TWO SEC east games, the embarassment in Obknoxville was worse than Saturday’s loss (you know we did come back Sat in the 2nd half) and we STILL finished the season on a roll and wound up #2 in the FINAL (the one that matters) poll. Have a lot of respect for Mark Richt and the program that he has built. But as he and many others predicted, the O-Line may be solid one day, but that day is a while coming. The game was lost on the line of scrimmage where the rubber meets the road. More mature and stronger Bama lines whipped the Dawg’ butts, pure and simple, and shell-shocked them.

But you have to give UGA credit for not folding their tents as Clemson did. That fact is a credit to Richt, his staff, and his players—-and basis for hope for the rest of the season.

One last comment: although I have a great deal of respect for Richt and the entire Georgia program their fans are without question the most arrogant, obnoxious, bandwagoneers in college football. I loved it when the ABC camera focused on the “loyal” Dawg fan and you could read his lips as he turned to his cohort and said: “Let’s get out of here.” And that was with half the game left. Typical UGA fan.

And then to read all the comments from supposedly ardent UGA fans ripping Richt and Martiniez. Give me a break! You are blessed with one of the best coaching staffs in college football, one that has rebuilt the UGA program to the point it is among the nation’s elite. But when things get tough, the arrogant and obnoxious turn mean and ugly and get going— right out of the stadium and left the true, loyal fans behind.

What a bunch of frontrunners!

I agree with Bull-Gator on Meyer, Mullin and the dumb @@@ spread offense in the SEC. UF has been mediocre at best since Chris Leak graduated (yes, he got his degree). I am a season ticket holder, and I go to all of the home games plus the UGA game in Jax. The play calling Saturday was as pathetic as it was last year against Auburn. Meyer has previously stated that a guy who puts the ball on the ground will get benched. I guess it does not apply to Tebow and Harvin who fumbled on Saturday. I also believe that UGA will bounce back, but I am not as convinced that my Gators will do the same. The Gators lack charisma this year and they are lethargic. It is hard to put a finger on the problem. Perhaps it is Meyer’s dogmatic and totalitarian style. I like Coach Meyer, but his team last year was average at best, and this year’s team looks worse. Hopefully the Cocktail Party in Jax will be a good game. My sense is that the hated DAWGS will be well coached and ready to play, and the Gators will stink up the joint for the 2nd year in a row. If the Gators loose 3-4 games this year, there will be a huge uproar in Gainesville. Bull-Gator is totally correct. Meyer is starting to sound like zooker with the “we will fix it” statement. Mullen is a poor coach and his play calling is below high school level. Yes, I am a disappointed Gator, but I have no excuses. UGA will be back with a fury, but I have my doubts about UF.

Yeah, it was bad. Yeah, we got manhandled. Yeah, it could have been worse. BUT, it ain’t over yet. We’re almost half the way into an unforgetable season. As Tony pointed out, we still control our own destiny. All the contenders in the east except Vandy (sorry, Kentucky) have conference losses, and we have the chance to rectify that. If we take care of business the rest of the way, we’ll be looking at a rematch with either ‘Bama or LSU (sorry, Auburn,) and a rematch with ‘Bama on Dec. 6 would be a great measuring stick of how far we’ve come. That said, ‘Bama called, and played, the most perfect half of a football game I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a LOT! Kudos to Saban, both coordinators and the team, for both the plan and the execution. It’s gut check time in Athens. Time for the meat up front to man up. Time for the secondary to match up. Time for Martinez to wise up. You can’t continue to play soft zone and allow a team with a huge line to get to the red zone so easily, and then expect to dig in. Time to STOP STUPID PENALTIES, especially on defense! Time to draw a line between agression and stupidity.

I still believe. This team is good, VERY good. They’re still young and learned some important lessons this weekend. Now, how will they use what they learned? After stewing in this loss for two weeks, I’d hate to be in Tennessee’s shoes on Oct. 11. Woof, woof!

The East is basically funneled down to UF, UGA and the pesky Commodores. I mention Vandy simply because of what MS did to UF. Anything is possible but from here on out, not so probable. Wake up calls came in this past Saturday to a slew of Top 25 teams. Who will answer..? I still say UGA wins the East and the West, well, I had AU early but they haven’t shown the offense to take the West.

Crompton hasn’t shown the ability to gee-haw with Clawson. He backed up Ainge adequate, not great. Changing up the offense from Cutcliffe to Clawson has had it’s apparent pitfalls and problems. QB is the most glaring…

…and from what I’ve seen of AU, Vandy has a shot this coming Saturday.

I am sooooo sick of all of the arm chair quarterbacks and these so called analysts dissing GA at every opportunity. I watched every minute of the game. I did see Alabama dominate Georgia in the first half. I also saw Georgia come back in the second half and make up the 30 (it would have been 31 points if they did not try for the 2 point conversion)that the commentators said would be impossible. These Dawgs did not come back out in the second half with their tails between their legs. They gave AL all they could handle. I do know that GA has weaknesses, what team does’t? Didn’t the almight USC and Fla Gators fall this past week to NON RANKED teams???? At least AL was in the top 10. I have been a GA fan since the day I was born. I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly. This is a good solid team that will be just fine. Will they make it to the SEC or National championship play-offs? Who knows, it is not up to them, it is up to the people that have been given the God like power to make the decision. The best teams did not play last year and will probably not play again this year. Somehow, they will find a way to get USC, FL, OH State and/or LSU in the play offs. All I will say is I am proud to be a UGA fan. GO DAWGS!

Lastly, and with all “due respect” you are NOT my “friend.” But alas yes I do indeed have a point—and it was made according to the rules of debate: when one brings up a point, the other party counters—now do YOU compute? Somehow I doubt it…

For the record, UGA has 2 Heisman winners and 2 National Championships. Addendum: I for one do not place as high a value on the Heisman as you apparently (and grossly) mistake. O n c e a g a i n, I did not bring up the Heisman—nor do I “whine” nor care about it. Football is a team sport and I support my TEAM—regardless of who the running back happens to be. That said, I have always respected Alabama’s impressive football heritage and continue to do so (my original remarks left no evidence to the contrary); however I do not respect you nor your ilk. You lack both class and intelligence.

This marks the last time I will address you directly because to continue to do so is to convey dignity to your continuous inane drivel; something I have already committed enough.

CC, Alambama was playing the clock the second half, UGA didn’t have a chance at winning this one; thats the difference, FLA and USC were in it until the end, both had a chance to win. The polls reflect the reality. All the teams you mentioned dropped 8 spots. If the teams that lost, run the table they will be back in the title picture. USC has the best chance at doing that. The other big difference in the teams is, the others have all won a NC, since the dawgs last did it 28 years ago.

Tony, Tony, Tony ……. I know I’ve read, this year, where you’ve talked about how good Wake Forrest is, and good Vandy is playing. Now you’re doing a 180, and saying they stink?? You lose credibility when flip-flop like this!

And you need to become a little more original, and a lot less ho-hum in your weekly predictions; i.e. 21-17, 28-24, 14-10, 28-21, 31-10, 45-17, etc., etc.

Insight like this: Duke can beat Ga Tech this Saturday if Tech has 3+ turnovers, and they [Duke] either score directly off of the turnover, or drive and score as a result of the T.O. If Tech protects the ball the game will be a blowout; Tech wins something like 47-13.

I’ve got to defend our host.

Tony picked his Alma Mater to win the game last Saturday but, unlike Mark Schlabach, he has never blatantly disrespected the Crimson Tide.

This blog wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Tony, and I’m gonna miss it when it’s gone.

Tony Barnhart is an institution in Southern college football. I find the classless remarks aimed at Tony offensive and un-called for.

That’s my $0.02 worth… FWIW

UGA will never win the whole nut with the Central Michigan Brain Trust of Martinez and Janeck. How can they possibly match wits with Nick Saban, and his coaching staff. Coaching the MAC conference shows in big games.

Also Eisen (spelled wrong) needs to go into administration, and we need to find a top gun receivers coach who can produce an All American receiver.

I like how everyone is saying UGA got completely destroyed against BAMA. In the first half, yes they did, but last I checked we play 4 quarters of Football…and the game was pretty even towards the end. 41-30…..is hardly a blowout. I am proud of my dawgs fighting back the way they did. I promise you….that this is exactly what the dawgs needed. The players need to go ahead and stop all the hype..aka”BLACKOUT”, national attention, national champions talk..and just go play football. Thats what they did after the TENNESSEE game and they dominated teams. With a bye week to regroup and think about the BAMA game, I think it bolds well for them. Im sure they will play with a chip on their shoulder til the end of the season. Hopefully UGA/BAMA will rematch in the DOME come December, and I can assure you Richt will have his DAWGS ready to play.

The one that blows me away about the UGA fans…..they can never simply accept a defeat. The popular line after this game is, we beat ourselves. Well, you did a lot of that, but the Tide whipped ya! We out played on the lines, we pressured yoru QB, even if we did only sack him two times. We contained Moreno when there was still a chance to run the ball for GA, and more important, we dictated the flow of the game and took NO-Shown out of the game.

Face it YIP YIP fans, we beat you. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad team. Not at all. Fact is, you probably should still take the East trophy. But try giving the other guys some credit from time to time. It really makes it easier to swallow your success. On the flip side, it makes your defeat sooooo much sweeter! How far away does that 1980 title seem today? Entitlement my you know what!

ugarulz,

Although I love your enthusiasm, all we heard last week was “we have too many skill players”“This is the best defense Bama has faced”.Face it, Bama was playing “not to lose” in the second half. UGA came back and scored twice, then we kicked that fieldgoal and made it a 3 poss. game. It was over at that point, That punt return should have been called back for not one, but THREE blocks in the back. That game was in no way as close as the score indicated!

By Ed

September 29, 2008 2:30 PM | Link to this

Teams that are “physically dominated” generally don’t outscore their dominators 30-10 in a half. Fact is, everything that could go wrong for Georgia in the first half went wrong. A silly head slap on the QB negated a recovered fumble. A perfect pass to Green was bobbled into the hands of an Alabama DB like an early Christmas present. A perfect throw and catch in the back of the endzone that required flawless precision - bet ‘Bama won’t be able to do that more than one more time this season. Every dog has his day, and Saturday was Alabama’s day.

Georgia lost, but this wasn’t wire-to-wire domination like Alabama-Clemson. The Dawgs will be fine. If anything this will spur them on to a great season. Georgia was NEVER going to run the table with that brutal schedule. The media had them as the second coming of the ‘95 Nebraska Cornhuskers, which was always nonsense. Now that the hype has been quieted, let’s go out and GATA, starting with Tennessee a week from Saturday.

To all: I have read a bunch of crying, a bunch of chest thumping, etc. I usually do not read blogs for this very reason. EVERYONE has an opinion and EVERYONE thinks theirs is right. I decided to voice my opinion and I do not know if you got it or not. Frankly, I do not think most of you can think or reason above 5th grade level. This is just one game, it is not the end of the world. The bulldogs will win again and Alabama will lose again. These are kids that we all sit around watching hoping for the best and then getting angry if they lose. I am pretty sure I could not have done any better out there and I would bet money most of you wouldn’t last 5 minutes into the first quarter. Yes, I know there are four quarters in a ball game. But think about this, if ALA was wanting to prove a point they would not have ‘coasted’ in the second half. Please, they would have taken every opportunity to continue to run up the score. I have made my point. I am done. The rest of you can sit around and send your little messages back and forth. I have a life, I am going to go live it.

Silly Premature Speculation

Alabama has a young team. There is still a lot of football to be played. Anything can happen.

I know that. But I can’t help thinking about this possibility. What if…

What if Alabama continues to play well and makes it to the SEC Championship Game in December? What if they win that game? What are the odds that they would then be headed for the BCS Championship Game?

How cool would it be for Nick Saban to return to Miami accompanied by a National Championship football team?

I remember the last time that Alabama played for a National Championship. Who did they play?

Oh yeah… I remember.

Miami!

To say UGA is overrated is just rediculous. We got beat to another TOP 10 SEC team. There are usually atleast 4 of them. That is the SEC. UGA will still be right there at the end. You cant name a realistic UGA fan or coach that actually believed they were going undefeated. UGA has weaknesses like every team in America and great staffs like Bamas expose them, just as CMR and his staff will expose another. UGA is one of the best 6 or 7 programs in America and the national title could come any year. Even Oklahoma is over rated right now. When they lose they will catch the raft as well. Its college football of today.

Aawbarn waiting too and their offense should be able to figure out how to score more than one TD by then. One thing they do know how to do is beat the Tide though.

GT has exposed the SEC for what it is, over rated. I mean come on, Vandy is in first Place. LOL.

Well reality paid a visit Sanford Stadium Saturday evening. We may be a top 10 team…maybe. Bama not only beat down the Dawgs on the scoreboard, they beat up the Dawgs with numerous injuries. What physical mismatch. It looked like men against boys out there. We will likely struggle against other physical teams such as Auburn, LSU and TN. If the MENTAL mistakes and penalties continue, we will have a hard time beating everyone left one the schedule!

I said 3 things back in the preseason article:

1) UGA would not go undefeated, anybody that thought they would is a blind fool. I said it before and stand by it that they will lose 2 possibly even 3 games. Tennessee hasn’t looked good, but they have OWNED UGA the past 2 years and with games against LSU and Florida on the road following, this will be a tough stretch for them

2) I would also like to point out that the spread is overrated and Tubberville’s decision to try and install that at Auburn is about 2 years too late. College defenses are adjusting to this offense now as pretty much everybody runs some version of the spread offense now. It’s not a novelty anymore. Auburn does not have a duel threat qb to really make it work, and their wr’s are average at best. I called it pre-season that Auburn’s offense would struggle, and 3 conference games into the season they have exactly 3 offensive td’s to show for that big “upgrade” they made in changing offenses. Auburn is on their way down, Tubberville will be fired in 2 years and Alabama will overtake the state as the premier football program.

3) I also said don’t sleep on LSU just because they graduated some players. The talent level and overall depth is the best in the SEC. The question that remains is how much longer do the football gods keep letting LSU get the breaks? The Tigers needed a qb and they have seemingly found one in Jarret Lee. A break here or there and LSU will be back in Atlanta again this year and possibly in a position to go back the NCG.

It’s nice to see such classy remarks from all of the Bama fans. It’s nice to see that a team who hasn’t won in years has enough class to win graciously and simply be proud of their team without having to degrade the opponent (dripping sarcasm). Bama, congratulations for today. You’re sitting pretty for the moment, but remember that pride often comes before a fall. It might serve you better to be complimentary of your opponent because the better they look, the better you look. However, it seems that for now you’re content with putting the a* in class.

RAMBLE ON,

LSU did not struggle against Missy St. It was obvious they were a bit lethargic after the emotional road win against Auburn, but the game was never in doubt.LSU toyed with MSU all night. LSU would get ahead and then relax, but anytime M. St. got too close for comfort the Tigers turned on the jets.

State fought a hard game, I really like Sly Croom, but that game was FAR from a struggle for LSU.

Congradulations Bama. You smacked us good. And you know what, WE HAD IT COMING! Maybe this will shut everyone up.

I for one, sat in Sanford stadium until the final gun sounded….unlike the “uberfans” that have been sitting around me for the last 5 years. They left at the end of the first half. These people love to tell me how little I know about my team….and football in general, while they talk about their travels with the dawgs all over the universe. Bet they won’t be travelling so much now….gawd, I am so sick of these bandwagon folks.

i believe i warned all you high as a kite dawg fans about our lack of pass rush and inability to block.

I was hoping that this was just the typical CMR/CWM “vanilla offense and defense” trick that they tend to pull every year until our first big SEC game. (i am sure that this will no doubt get some nasty comment from the uneducated.)

It was not. Not only do we have weaknesses in the DL and OL, but we must have some serious weaknesses in the secondary that CWM is covering up by not blitzing.

SEC Title? Shut up! We need to worry about beating Tennessee and Vandy.

As a Bama fan I will tip my hat to the UGA fans. When it was 31-0 at half I noticed the whole stadium stayed for the 2nd half. As a matter of fact, it seemed like it wasn’t until it was 41-17 with 4 or 5 minutes to go and the game no longer in doubt that fans actually started to pack up and leave. I have to pay my respects to the dawg fans who never gave up and to those that even though the game was out of reach they stayed to support their dawgs. That was indeed classy.

Hey insects galore,

As you lose 3 to 4 more games this year, keep hanging your hat on the fact that you think you are going to beat tech at the end of the year if that helps your poor pitiful life go on through the fall. But just so you don’t totally slit your wrists either this thanksgiving weekend or at the latest, next thanksgiving, keep in the back of your mind: CHAN IS NOT AT TECH ANYMORE AND YOU ARE ABOUT TO RECEIVE WHAT YOU HAVE DESERVED FROM TECH FOR YEARS TO COME…AND THAT IS A GOOD OLD FASHIONED BEATDOWN!

Any team, any given Saturday (or any day) is subject ( In the SEC) to beat another team. Bama is justified to have the #2 position and I think they are better than Oklahoma or Missouri. LSU is awesome as well and all one can say is the SEC East just got had this Saturday. If Tennessee doesn’t make it through October without a win look for a coaching change in Knoxville by years end. As for Alabama I was impressed with Nick Saban the many certainly knows something about coaching and utilizing and motivating players and I think the SEC overall is the best coached teams in the nation. I was also impressed that Saban recognized the 2nd Half performance of the Dogs many don’t like Saban but I think he’s a class act and only time and a few more Saturdays will tell just how good the Alabama team is. No doubt their toughest opponents should be LSU and Auburn but I think that the most likely teams to beat Alabama this year will be either Tennessee or Vandy, yeah that’s right. Remember what I said at first about any given SEC team being able to beat another on any given day. My hope though is to see Alabama run the table to the SEC Conference game and see Georgia and Alabama in another head’s up matchup in the State of Georgia. Then if Alabama does again what they did this Saturday my money is on Bama to be the National Champions.

told you dawg fans you were headed for a big fall and that we were going to beat you. You were talking so much smack and pounding your chest that you didn’t use your head and open your eyes to what Bama was. A team that is playing like the best team in the country and had all the tools to dominate the game on both sides of the ball. “Your not Clemson” you said. You got your butts kicked just like Clemson didn’t you?, at least they didn’t quit like Clemson.

I actually predicted this win over UGA back in the summer before we even played Clemson. I did my homework and knew we were going in their and going to get a win.

Still, some of you still don’t want to give Bama credit? Those of you who don’t, are just fools or haters, either way your just ignorant.

Hope you enjoyed watching your team get embarrassed as much as I did. The blackout didn’t help, win won for Larry didn’t help, chance to be #1 didn’t help, Knowshon didn’t run wild, defense didn’t do nothing, they didn’t correct making penalties. Even the punt return for a TD should have been called back, pushing man into kicker and block in the back were not called. Knowshon’s TD should have been reviewed because foot may have been out. They didn’t even review it because they were losing so bad.

They belived all the press clippings and all the smoke their fans were blowing up their a*. They underestimated their opponet just like their loud mouth fans did.
