This just in: Georgia’s No. 8 is pretty good

Five things we learned over the weekend:

1. Georgia’s No. 8 is pretty good: There are very few freshmen at this level of college football who really live up to the recruiting hype. Fortunately for Georgia, A.J. Green is one of them. It was clear going into Saturday night’s game with Arizona State that Georgia OC Mike Bobo wanted to work really hard to get the ball to Green and it paid off with eight catches for 159 yards. I’ve seen a lot of really good receivers at Georgia from Lindsay Scott, to Andre Hastings, Brice Hunter, Reggie Brown, and Gibson. It is a long list of All-SEC players.

But consider this: Georgia has never had a consensus All-America player at the wide receiver position. Green has a chance to become the first before he leaves Georgia if he stays healthy and listens to Bobo and Mark Richt.

The passing game should be open all season because opposing defenses will decide they are not going to let RB Knowshon Moreno and the Georgia running attack beat them. If Matt Stafford and the receivers keep playing like this, the Bulldogs are going to be hard to beat.

2. Tech puts the ACC on notice: Mississippi State coach Sylvester Croom told me last week that he started working on his Georgia Tech game plan back in the summer. Why? It was because Paul Johnson’s offense, when it is clicking on all cylinders, is impossible to prepare for in just four days. On Saturday we found out why the rest of the ACC has to be concerned about Georgia Tech as a force in this league-sooner rather than later.

I promise you that every defensive coordinator in the ACC already has a copy of Tech’s 38-7 destruction of Mississippi State. They are starting to wonder how they will defend this attack after watching the Yellow Jackets roll up 438 rushing yards.

And here is what’s really scary. Josh Nesbitt gets hurt and Jaybo Shaw, who is barely old enough to shave, comes off the bench and the offense never misses a beat. That’s coaching.

3. Tennessee, Fulmer, in trouble: Over 106,000 people turned out at Neyland Stadium turned out Saturday because they were convinced that Tennessee had a chance to beat Florida. After two kicks to Brandon James, who may be the best return man on the planet, Florida led 17-0 and the game was over. For the second time in three games, Tennessee made so many mistakes one hardly knows where to start. Quarterback Jonathan Crompton has an adequate arm but does not appear ready to play at this level. He is being asked to do more than he can really do and is making mistakes a redshirt junior should not make. Tennessee started 1-2 a year ago and fought its way back to reach the SEC championship game. I thought Phillip Fulmer did one of his best coaching jobs ever holding that team together.

But I just don’t get the sense that this team is tough enough to do that. Florida beat Tennessee Saturday and, if we’re going to be candid, the Gators really didn’t have to break a sweat. It was just too easy. That is what should concern Tennessee fans.

To me, it’s too early to speculate about Fulmer’s future as head coach. But here is the immediate question: If Tennessee loses at Auburn this week to start 1-3, how many empty seats will there be in Neyland Stadium for the Oct. 4 game against Northern Illinois?

4. LSU can absolutely defend their national championship: We said early in the season that if LSU could just get good-not great-but good play at quarterback, the Tigers were talented enough to defend their national championship. What redshirt freshman Jarrett Lee did in the second half against Auburn Saturday night was remarkable. After a horrible first half, he came off the bench when starter Andrew Hatch suffered a concussion. His two touchdown passes led LSU to the 26-21 win. “If they get that kind of play at quarterback the rest of the season they will be hard to beat,” Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said Sunday. I agree. We’ll find out a lot when LSU goes to Florida on Oct. 11 and hosts Georgia on Oct. 25.

5. We still don’t know how good Florida is: Because of Tennessee’s dumb mistakes, the Gators got up 17-0 early at Knoxville and so Urban Meyer never really had to open the playbook. But it has to be encouraging for the Gators-and pretty scary for the rest of the league—to know that they can win on the road and Tim Tebow doesn’t have to do all the heavy lifting. There are a lot of different ways this Florida team can beat you and the defense does appear to be better. But Tennessee never put the Gators under any kind of pressure and Ole Miss and Arkansas don’t figure to do it either over the next two weeks. Florida will not have to pull out all the stops until Oct. 11 when the Gators host LSU,

UT may be in trouble, just as they were last year, and the year before, when thay played the Dawgs. Unfortunately, neither of those games turned out tto well for the DAWGs, as we have not stopped their offense for the last 6 quarters! Hopefully, with 2 weeks to prepare after the ‘Bama game, we will not have to endure another shellacking at the hands of a “not very good UT team with “Fulmer’s job on the line”.

I agree with Tony on the Gator Offense. We’ve beaten 3 good teams (They might not be top 10 teams but they are far from cream puffs.) in Hawai’i, Miami and UT with a pretty vanilla offense.

We could probably do the same with the rest of our schedule with the exception of LSU and UGA. I just hope there is a lot of unused firepower waiting for those two games.

As a TN fan, yes…Tennessee is in trouble. QB is the worst we have had in years, players are not responding to coaching, and there is no leadership. Problem is Fulmer got an extension last year and the buyout is pretty big….will Fulmer do what is in the best interest of the program? He got them 2 SEC titles and a NC championship. Great career but his time has past.

Ga Tech showed what it can do when it doesn’t turn the ball over. It can be pretty good.

Let’s not fool ourselves. Tech has not arrived. They are not world-beaters. They have a first-year coach installing an offensive scheme that is completely different from last year and maybe from anything that the players ran even in high school. They are made up mostly of freshmen and sophmores. And that means they are going to make mistakes. They will probably lose somes games down the road this season that they shouldn’t.

But you can’t argue with the coaching, and at this point you can’t argue with the results. Paul Johnson knows what he’s doing, and he’s doing it well.

UT will keep Fulmer in some capacity and create some “job”- much like Auburn did Pat Dye. They’ll pay Fulmer a crap load of money so he’ll keep his mouth shut about the nasty program they have in obKnoxville. Quite frankly, I hope they keep him as a coach for a long time. It’s fun watching him get his butt kicked. He was hell-bent on bringing down Alabama but look what it got him. The trophy case is VERY dusty and Saban is loading an arsenal much like LSU had and still has, to some extent. UGA is without a doubt the best team in the SEC and that will be proven Saturday.

I find it funny when bama and GA fans take shots of Fulmer for being fat, being dirt, etc. I guess the success he has had against the 2 programs (11-5 vs GA and 11-5 against Bama) makes other teams fans dislike him. Perhaps when GA or Bama win their next NC, some of their fans won’t have an inferiority complex anymore.

Tony,

Not sure what your AJC resources are like these day’s but would like to see you do a story on what is going on in Knoxville. It appeared to me that UT’s biggest hurdle is the between the ears decision making by its QB. I don’t think it is the new OC scheme because they were able to move the ball on the gators up until the 5 yard line. If UT has a QB that is a good game manager, they probably score 14 points and go into the locker room down 20-14. That would have been a very interesting second half to see…but because Crompton is not Ainge-like regarding game and clock management, they got zero points on those 2 first half drives. If UT loses to Auburn Saturday, that may be the end of Fulmer.

Seems like they say that every year about Fulmer. But he is best when his back is against the wall. Despite their loss Auburn looks really tough, too tough for UT. Fulmer loses another but he will rebound later in the year and have a good enough season to keep his job.

Fla. does look scary good. Lots of weapons and clearly the beast of the east.

All the Tech haters are starting to looking foolish. Their option looked really good and they are only going to get better. Miss. St. is terrible offensively but always plays tough D. I can’t remember the last time someone shredded Croom’s D. like that.

I see Uga is donning the black shirts for what 85% of their fans view as a “big” game. I thought UGA fans had already chalked this one up as a win in the preseason. Big mistake.

Arkansas all american outland trophy winning center Jonothan Luigs met up with Bamas phenom 6’5, 365 lb nosetackle Terrance Cody Saturday. After being tossed around like a ragdoll for the first 2 plays they then doubleteamed Cody for the rest of the game.

Is it really true that Uga started a freshman center against ASU and that they plan on doing the same against Mount Cody aka Mongo? God help that young man when he goes up against the thrashing machine.

I don’t know who wins between Uga and Bama. But I do know one thing. Bama will completely shut down the UGA running game. If you think you can run the ball against the Bama D you best put down your kool aid right now. Aint gonna happen.

On the opposite side of the ball you will be going up against this year’s future Outland trophy winner and all American Andre Smith at left tackle and all conference center Antoine Caldwell. Better buckle your chinstraps. Gonna be a long, long night for UGA in the trenches on both side of the ball.

You can still win with a big passing game, some big special teams play, and some luck. But you cannot and will not win at the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball. Good luck Dawg fans. You gonna need it!

  1. Yes he is, but I wouldn’t expect to see a similar display this week against Bama. And the Pac 10’ers wonder why they are able to put up all those fancy statistics. The defenses are still horrible. If USC loses to one of these creampuffs again they should be banished from the top 10 for the rest of the season.

  2. Great win by Tech. Keep in mind though that the more the season progresses the more film teams will have on this offense. There are going to be some bumps in the road.

  3. Tennessee special teams continues to be the worst I have ever seen year after year. Mistakes happen, but if those mistakes continue to happen year after year something is seriously wrong.

  4. They won’t get that kind of play at quarterback the rest of the season. He is a freshmen and will be inconsistant.

  5. I am not at all impressed with Florida to this point. It looks like more of the same to me. They will win alot of games this year because of the easy schedule, but they may have a hard time winning the ones that count.

Greene is a freshman phenom and is doing a super job. Don’t forget about MoMass. He did a fine job. With both of them out there, it takes some pressure off Stafford. Then there’s the running game - Moreno & King. If the O Line can open a few more holes (and if Southerland can get healthy real quick) we’ll be incredibly talented on offense.

Great game Saturday. Damn Green looked like a damn pro out there. Went up and got everything. Tavarres King looked good too. All that goes along with what we already had in MoMass, Chandler and Moore, Durham etc. I’ve got a feeling that Bobo and Richt haven’t shown us the entire playbook yet or featured some of the guys that have just a few plays under their belts.

One thing for sure is that we better find somebody that can kick the ball into the endzone before Jacksonville rolls around.

I hope Coach Richt has some way of handling those penalties. Damn we are at the bottom of the NCAA in yards and # of penalties. Those will kill us in the SEC big games. We would have looked 10 times better Saturday night if we had any discipline.

I watched a lot of football this weekend. Being an Auburn graduate, it kills me to say this. But the best team I saw this weekend was Alabama.

Keep in mind, the level of their competition might have something to do with it. However, I expect the upcoming UGA v. UA game to be quite a battle.

Other thoughts:

Auburn has improved, but has a long way to go. QB still seems weak.

I expected LSU to be more dominant. Hats off to them for continually coming back after getting down.

Florida looks strong. Again, the competition may have had something to do with it.

Georgia looks like they’re fielding one of their best teams ever. But I’m not sure they’re invincible.

Tennessee looks like they’ve never seen a football before. You have to wonder how a team that has as much coaching stability as they have had could end up like they are now.

I hope everyone is ready for a week’s worth of tough talk and chest pounding out of the Bammers. They are once again on the Kings of September. At any rate, I don’t know what’s going to happen Saturday either, but I do now that Georgia isn’t Clemson or Arkansas. That much is for certain.

Go ahead and load the box up for the run, like that hasn’t happened the past..oh, I don’t know…6 or 7 times Georgia has stepped on the football field. That’s a very original tactic Bama. Georgia will surely be befuddled by this creative approach. rolls eyes

Tenn misses Cutcliffe bad. They struggled when he left before. Crompton has the tools but I think his mindset is not what it should be. I am sure Fulmer will work hard but the Vols might struggle all year. Alabama has a very good o-line and d-line but remember they struggled against Tulane. Arkansas is terrible but at times they moved the ball very well. If Alabama stacks the box then Stafford will have a field day. UGA has very good WR and once the tight end comes around their offense could be scary. GT has some speed and a very good defense. I think they will be the surprise team in the ACC but when they a defense with great speed the option will hit some bumps. Gators have great skill people and lots of speed. Yet to be tested. Lsu is the real deal. If they get any type of QB play they can win it all again. Speed galore and good skill people. Thanks for the good work Tony.

(1) Yup, that A.J. Green kid is good, with the potential for true greatness. He is a star play-maker waiting to happen. Give him time, without stressing him. There will be time to annoint him as a hero later.

(2) Georgia Tech is apparently better than anyone expected in Coach Johnson’s first year, but their win-loss record is at least as much a function of their competition to date. The apparent weakness of the ACC generally this season should help, too, but given the team’s youth and inexperience with the new offensive scheme, they are going to lose a game or two they could have won, and they will still get stomped by the Big Boys (e.g. UGA) this year.

(3) Wow. No one enjoys a win over the Volunteers more than I do, but Fulmer’s Tennessee team looked sadly outclassed. So much so, I quit seriously watching the game half way through the 3rd quarter to talk to other people at the alumni viewing party. Frankly, I felt bad for the Vols. The program seems to be in a death spiral, and there’s no Cutcliffe or Ainge to turn it around this year. Could be Phil’s last year——they will not win eight games if they continue to play as they did Saturday. Nice to know Vanderbilt will be gunning for them, too.

(4) LSU is balanced on both sides of the ball, but it’s worth noting that an inconsistent Auburn offense score three touchdowns against LSU. LSU is good, but they’re not invincible.

(5) True dat, as my LSU friends like to say. The Gators have not been truly tested, and they are not likely to be stretched before the UF-LSU game in October. Nevertheless, we should have a better sense of this year’s Gator offense after the Mississippi and Arkansas games. For reasons that I cannot explain, the Mississippi schools always play their best games against Florida. Thankfully, the Gators host Ole Miss at home this year.

Last season, amid the shake up with UT’s coaching staff on the offensive side, Fulmer had an opportunity to keep in place the mindset of Cutcliffe. Alas and woe crept in when Fulmer took to the road in search of the Holy Grail. As he looking of The One, an assistant coach named Trooper Taylor was passed over for the OC job. Trooper took his knowledge of the UT playbook, personnel and tutorial experience under the leadership of Cutcliffe to OK ST, and if memory serves semi-correct, shares OC duties out there. Not choosing Taylor almost cost Fulmer a player or two that gee-hawed well with this coach. BTW, Taylor talked the players out of leaving Tennessee. Taylor is a fine recruiter and was respected by the team. Let’s just say Fulmer fumbled away a possible win-win in not retaining Trooper Taylor.

Don’t know if the AD up there basically did the OC hiring for Fulmer, but if so, somebody missed a grand opportunity to keep an asst coach in-house and move him up the ladder. This may be a part of Fulmers epitaph…Through it all, I’ll remain loyal to the team…

Personally, I really didn’t think A.J. Green would be a big factor this year for the Dawgs. I knew he was very highly recruited and one of the best in the country, but I really thought it would take at least a year before his true potential really broke out. Yet, after watching him against A.State, he is ready for the big time and ready to be a star. This is a big advantage for the Dawgs on offense now that Green has stepped up and made himself known. Defenses are going to have to choose whether to try and bring everyone in the box to stop the run, or they are going to have to decide to double coverage Green, which can open up the running game and other receivers like Durham and Massaquai.

A Gator’s Take on Florida

I wasn’t as impressed as most with the Tennessee win. Don’t get me wrong. I’m still happy, but here is my take on our three areas of the game:

1) The offense is not what it was last year (How I don’t know). Still to much Tebow and the option without enough vertical passing mixed in.

2)The defense is improved but we were still outgained by Tennessee. We did not have a sack and our blitzes are ineffective. You can’t count on teams shooting themselves in the foot like the Vols did.

3)Our special teams is where we shine and have an advantage over most teams. Punt and kickoff returns consistently give us good field postion or score points. It appears the kicker can make some field goals.

I hope we have our offensive problems solved by LSU, or I think it will be a rough day for us.

To Mike,

The reason we, Bama fans, hate Fulmer is two-fold and has nothing to do with his record against us:

  1. UT is our most hated rival after Auburn. No matter who coaches UT we will not like him.

  2. Fulmer snitched to the NCAA and got us on probation. I refer to is as “snitching” because he was guilty of the exact same thing (our boosters outbid UT’s boosters for Means) and turned us in to get off the hook himself. Then he lied about turning us in. Sure the Bama boosters (and by association, the entire program) were guilty but he who is without sin cast the first stone.

If it was about win-loss record, we would hate Richt, which we don’t.

So reservoir dog thinks Bama might get 50 yards rushing on UGA. Perhaps he should lose his bias and look at some FACTS. FACT is that Bama leads the conference in rushing offense and churned out well over 300 yards rushing against both Arky and Clemson, handing both their only losses.

Conversely, we were no. 1 nationally in rushing defense going into the Arky game and probably still are after shutting them down.

I don’t think reservoir dawg knows what’s about to hit the UGA d-line. All American left tackle Andre Smith is going to blow the doors off your defensive end. He is backed up by all conference center Antoine Caldwell. We are flat out bigger, stronger, and more physical than you are. Clemson, with its thunder and lightning tandem of Davis and Spiller, both future NFL players, managed 0 yards rushing against the Tide D.

When we are on D our mammoth 365 lb noseguard Cody is going to toss your freshman center around like a ragdoll. If Arkansa’s Outland trophy winning center got manhandled by Cody then how on earth do you think your freshman center is going to do? Keep dreaming pal. Just a fact of life. You cannot block this guy. This aint no pac 10 defense reservoir female dog.

Let’s be real, folks. Chest pounding from Bama is a little premature. We heard the same sh*t last year in the first half before Auburn and LA-Monroe and the rest. I know they’re desperate for some banners to hang again. No doubt they’re improved, but then again they haven’t played a top notch SEC team yet.

I’m not sold on UGA yet, either. We’ll find out aplenty come Saturday. Bottom line is we are just now scratching the surface of the meaty schedules these teams have to play. I gave up on UT and UGA last year, it looked like Bama and SoCarolina were primed for big years. I just needed to wait until the END of the season and put little stock in the first half results.

Auburn, LSU, Bama, UF, UGA all look extremely dangerous when everything’s clickin’. When they play each other (witness LSU/Auburn), it’s gonna come down to some execution and a lucky break or two, along with timing (who had the off-week, injury, or rough game the week before)

So everybody chill, have a beer or Coke and enjoy some southern-fried smashmouth football the next few weeks. Go Dawgs!!

UGA - UA ought to be a barn burner and clearly Alabama is much improved over last year - and they weren’t too sloppy then. We’ll see which team has improved the most and, as I said, it’ll be a goodun’.

Why would we need to load the box?

Coming into this season, Clemson’s running backs were touted as the “best running back duo” in college football. Did we load the box? Nope. Did they run rampant? Nope. Wanna know why?

For the uninformed, let me share a little clip with you:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNCdVEfoBEo

The star of the clip is Terrance Cody. He will line up directly across from UGA’s center. He is 6’5”, has slimmed down to 365 lbs, and is extremely quick and agile (evident in the video clip). He can even dunk a basketball.

During this past weekend, Mr. Cody went up against Jonathan Luigs, Arkansas’ all-America center. Last year, Mr. Luigs won the Rimington Trophy which is awarded to the nation’s best center. Mr. Luigs was unable to block Mr. Cody by himself.

If your offensive line cannot block the defense’s lineman, you cannot successfully run or pass the ball.

Reservoir dawg and reality dawg,

I’ll put all smack talking aside even though its just a lot of fun to rankle each other.

I do put some stock in our win over Clemson just as I put some stock in UGAs win over Carolina. But other than that I really don’t put much into any of the other games either team has played.

Its only now that we really find out what each team is made of. My prediction is that it will be a carbon copy of last years game. It will be tight and down to the wire, maybe even overtime. In any event it should be a great game. Good luck dawg fans. Signing off.

You can get a free NOBAMA bumper sticker by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Free Bumper Sticker, c/o Ted Jackson, 2306 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, KY 40206. Regardless of who wins the election, it will still say “NO Bama”. You can pack a large envelope with lots of self-addressed stamped envelopes and send one to all your friends and family while saving some postage. The free sticker probably won’t arrive before the Bama-UGA game but Auburn fans and anyone else on Bama’s schedule should be able to make it work. Also, you might make this Saturday if you use their Website and pay rush shipping.

First, Tony, I always enjoy your articles. You have a great sense of SEC football and I enjoy your insight.

Now, I want to say, as a life long Tennessee fan and former student I am deeply saddened by the turn of out team. Even our rivals in BAMA and FLA fill badly for us! That’s really saying something.

I remember Fulmers first game, and I think it is time to witness his last. He did great things winning the SEC and a NC back in 98’ but while he and everyone in Knoxville were sitting around remember 98 the rest of the SEC passed us by. We can be relevant again, but the longer we wait the harder it will be to climb back up. The SEC is full of great teams in UGA, FLA, LSU, AUB, BAMA, and it looks like even VANDY is looking tough, so lets not fall to far back!

It is time to act.

And yes, Number 8 for the dogs is a stud! I really enjoyed watching the DAWGS kick that pac-10 team to the curb at their house. Also, the AUB-LSU game was a true SEC battle, that’s what I’m talking about.

ams is 29-2 and his teams are 25-4 when playing in an opponent’s home stadium. Most recently, his 2007 team finished 11-2 and ranked No. 2 in the country.

He is one of only nine head coaches in Division I-A history to record 60 or more wins in his first six seasons and 70 or more wins in his first seven seasons. Richt is one of only six coaches in history to win two SEC championships (2002, 2005) in his first five years, and one of only five head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10-win seasons (2002-05). Saint Nick, yes Bama is good but we’ll see how good Sat. night. You won’t dominate the lines of scrimmage like you did against Clemson & Arkansas. All Clemson has is speed & finesse and Arkansas looked pretty weak. Arkansas’ overall lines are undersized.

Before we as Georgia fans make any judgements regarding Tennessee, keep in mind that even though they many times lose to Florida by 30, they still turn around and beat us.

One game at a time Dawgs. Bama is a great team but minimize penalties and we win.

1- Green is the real deal. He makes Stafford’s job much easier. 2- Tech has a real shot at the ACC title. They will make mistakes, after all the triple option is a high risk-high reward offense. Their good D and the weakness of the ACC this year will help their case. 3- Fulmer has an alley cat’s survival instincts. How many of his nine lives has he used? 4- LSU has very good linemen on both sides of the ball, they also have a good shot at winning the west. 5- It seems that UF still relys on Tebow and Harvin too much. Keep it up and Tebow will be ailing by November, again. A hint to SEC special teams coaches. Punt the ball out of bounds against the Gators! A 32 yd punt is better than an eighty yard return. You would think Phat Phil would have learned that after the last two UF games.

RE: 1 - Yes, Georgia had a good non-conference win. They looked much better than when they played an SEC opponent last week.

RE: 2 - Beating the worst team in the SEC will always be a big deal for any ACC team. Tech’s future opponents would do well to contact some retired defensive coaches from the 1970’s that remember how to defend the option.

RE: 3 - Tennessee is having problems. But just look how well Duke’s season is going! Things that make you go Hmmm…

RE: 4 - As Lee Corso would say, not so fast my friend. Neither LSU nor Auburn has yet faced a proven opponent. Both teams might be good — or not. Sly Croom’s Dogs did a better job of shutting down Auburns struggling “Spread Eagle” Offense than did LSU. The Tech Jackets were not impressed with that. Neither am I.

RE: 5 - October 11 is judgment day for Florida and LSU. That said, I have more doubts about LSU than Florida. There is little doubt that Florida and Georgia are the teams to beat in the SEC East Division. The West is still up in the air.

I am a long time Bama fan. I am, quite frankly, confused. I love what I am seeing so far from this Crimson Tide football squad. They have performed well in every aspect of the game.

I was concerned about the Linebacker position coming into this season. Bama has been rotating 11 different Linebackers with no noticeable drop in performance. I was concerned about the loss of Simeon Castille in the defensive secondary. Javier Arenas has proven that he is more than just a kick return specialist. We lost two play-makers at Wide Receiver in Keith Brown and DJ Hall. We have about a dozen receivers that are playing lights out. They haven’t yet been truly tested because we have been able to run the ball successfully with five different running backs.

This looks like old time Bama football. Can this really be true? We are playing 15 true Freshmen. We only have 9 Seniors. You’re not supposed to be able to do this and play hard-nosed, mistake free football — but we have. I have to pinch myself every week to make sure that I’m not dreaming.

After all of the turmoil and struggle that marks the most recent history of the Crimson Tide football program, it’s not easy to accept that we are where we now seem to be. But we will find out next Saturday in Athens.

Georgia has established themselves as one of the premiere NCAA FBS football programs. Their pre-season #1 ranking was not a mystery. It is perfectly valid to question the quality of Bama’s win over Clemson to start this season. If Alabama defeats the Georgia Bulldogs between the hedges next Saturday then I’ll stop pinching myself and just accept the fact that Bama is Back.

Win or lose — it’s gonna be a helluva game.

We should praise BAMA for what they did, in badly beating a crappy team, but lets be real serious here, Arkansas would make any team in the SEC look that good and a lot of teams even better than BAMA. Good win, but be careful in touting yourself as the cream of the crop…that will be decided saturday night. When that one and i’ll listen!

Tennesee vs Auburn is a game that matches two teams that were both over hyped before the season. This is a “who cares” game this year. Does not mean anything!

UGA vs Alabama…This week will be Alabama’s national “coming out party”. The whole “black out” thing was cute last year. It worked once. In my mind it did not count against the mighty Hawaii team. Alabama is going to give UGA everthing they want and more. This will be the early season loss that UGA will have to overcome to win the National Championship.

Ga Tech…Well, they are better than adverstised and will only get better. UGA has two weeks to prepare because of their off date. I am telling you, this year’s game will be one to remember!! Not sure has the horses to pull off an upset, but it gonna be interesting if this game means a shot at the National Championship for UGA. This year’s game will mean something! Finally.

In defense of coach Jelly Donut, UT is using a back up punter thanks to Colquitt’s love affair with my Sippin’ Solvent…Cunningham (bless his heart) doesn’t have the directional ability when placing foot to ball that Colquitt does but he’s what we have. UT made some strides in punting away from rocket ships last year after getting smoked a time or two… Also, Fulmer isn’t happy with Crompton. Crompton’s record as a starter is 1-3 with his signature win coming against UAB. There are two QB’s sharing clipboard duties and if one of them is to be the future, then the future may be now…Especially after Auburn if Crompton doesn’t have a breakout kind of day. Maybe Crompton is UT’s version of a Joe T #3…Alabama-UGA will garner my attention.

All the ‘Bama coming onto the ‘Dawg pages: pretty funny, but expected. Not that it makes a hoot but I’ve had Saturday’s game “circled” myself since last year. Yes, UGA went into OT with ‘Bama last season but it sure was strange because I recall that UA was very fortunate to have had that chance—and then the ‘Dawgs slammed the door shut with one play (with the moron ESPN ‘head talking about some dipstick celebrity). This year is somewhat different: I do think ‘Bama is improved—but then they’d better be ‘cause last year they fell apart after a 4-0 start. Don’t know if UGA is improved as far as talent or coaching, but yes, “mind-set” is improved (see SC game—they lost last year). This will shape up to be an SEC battle and I look forward to it: cannot wait. UGA will be ready. I’m sure ‘Bama will be too. So far, UGA and ‘Bama have had a close game (UGA-SC) but SC is better than Arky (the ‘Hawgs have to be the worst SEC team) and SC/Steve Spurrier put all their eggs into beating UGA: always have, always will; it’s THE game of the year for the ‘Cocks. Arky just doesn’t have “it” and they have a WOEful coach! Good lord. As for ‘Bama’s close game, don’t forget that ‘Bama hiccupped against Tulane: not impressive. UGA didn’t do so against their lesser opponents.

As for UT, last year was MUCH different. They had a proven senior QB and Coach ‘Cut was still in Knoxville. Check Fulmer’s record without DC…psst, it doesn’t bode well for the Large Orange. They got absolutely whipped by FL and Tony mirrored my own thoughts regarding Saturday: UF didn’t even break a sweat. Now UT goes to Auburn where they have never played well and then on to Athens where I think the theme will be something like, “uh nope, not THIS year boys!” No save-Phil’s-job-our-backs-are-against-the-wall-no-one-respects-us-it’s-us-against-the-world this time. I think the ‘Dawgs will say “nuff” this year.

Look, I am a Bama fan, and the one thing that ticks me off is the constant “praise” of the Tide. It is still early in the season. Remember, Bama has played well at the beginning of the season the past few years, but towards the end of the season, they fold. There wasn’t any improvements during the season. More like a regression. Nevertheless, I believe this year is different. We look like a totally different team in terms of being more physical, more intelligent, more focused.

However, THIS IS COLLEGE FOOTBALL. Like ESPN likes to say, “Every game counts.” If a team looks past its opponent, or think they can show up and win, a “lesser” team can give them a run for their money, even pull off a win. Examples? Auburn-Mississippi State, Arizona State-UNLV, Ohio State-Ohio, USC-Stanford (2007), Michigan-Appalachian State (2007), and lest we forget ULM-Alabama. Basically, sometimes talent is not enough.

Ok, now for my take of the upcoming game of the week: Alabama-UGA. I believe the keys to victory for any game are located in the trenches. Who is going to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. And I do not think they get enough credit. Without a solid O-line, the running backs cannot run and the quarterbacks cannot pass. Without a solid D-line, the running backs will run all over you and the quarterback will have time to pass. This game is going to be an interesting one. Both teams have solid linemen on both sides of the ball. The only concern for UGA is center. Of what I have read, he is a freshman. That may be weakness, especially with Terrence Cody and Josh Chapman anchoring the NG positiion. Close, physical game throughout. Have no idea what the outcome is going to be.

By the way, I read somewhere on these comments that Bama has not played anybody. But, neither has UGA. Let’s break it down:

Bama: Clemon (good team but overrated because of a new O-line and tendency to choke in big games), Tulane (C-USA member who gave E. Carolina a run for their money, but ECU lost to NC State), Western Kentucky (recently played in the FCS, newcomer on the FBS stage), and Arkansas (down year for the Hogs)

UGA: GA Southern (FCS school), Central Michigan (MAC member with a talented QB), South Carolina (down year for the Gamecocks), and Arizona State (good team with a great season last year, but has trouble with big game and recently lost to UNLV before the UGA game)

So, in retrospect, Bama and UGA have played two teams BCS conferences - Clemson (ACC) and Arizona State (PAC-10), two teams from non-BCS conferences - Tulane (C-USA) and Central Michigan (MAC), two teams in or recent competitors of the FCS - GA Southern and Western Kentucky, and two SEC teams looking to have down years - Arkansas and South Carolina.

This week should be another great contest like last year…

Message from enemy territory:

I write this from Birmingham, AL where the Bammers are walking around with their chests poked out because they beat the worst team in the SEC, badly. Believe me, Arky will take a few more beatdowns before this year is done.

Anyway, the Bammers believe that the SEC is their domain; that they own it. That their fall fall grace into mediocrity was do to a conspiracy against them and a couple of bad coaches. They think they are back and ready to take what they believe is rightfully theirs and to make a statement in Athens on Saturday night.

Let’s get ready to let these Bammers know that their time has passed and that there is a new Sheriff in town now and ain’t nobody coming into our house and stealing what belongs to us. Gen, I was aware of Your starting punter’s problems, but I think some scheme should have been in place to keep the ball away from a guy that had killed You in the past. Just My opinion, and You certainly know more than I do about the Vols. I must say that I am not impressed with Crompton. He was able to mount some drives and UT had the edge in TOP, if I remember correctly, but mistakes killed UT’s momentum every time. Unless UT makes some changes every team will load up to stop the run and see if Crompton can beat them with the pass. So far he has not shown the ability to carry the team, or even stretch the opposing D. Tubbs is a DC at heart, he will stop the run. It doesn’t look good for UT now, but I am not sure You want to break in a new QB against the WarTigerEagles. However, Stafford had his breakout game on the Plains in 2006 and began to throw the ball to the guys in the red helmets for a change. So who knows? Maybe one of your QBs will step up to the plate.

It never seems to fail. You get two good top 10 programs competing in the SEC and the blog turns into an all out brawl.

It’s going to be a fun game, one for the record books.

I think stafford will be able to find some receivers and Moreno will be able to run outside some.

I think Alabama will be able to run left and hit the P.A. pass too.

This is going to be the kind of SEC game that gets replayed and replayed on CSS until the tape wears out.

I’m glad UGA took care of the Pac-10 team. Looked pretty good too.

Ga Tech shocked me by scoring that many points on MSU. That was pretty impressive.

Fat boy ain’t too happy, but Vols fans are stuck with him. I think it’s funny. Auburn’s offense wakes up this weekend against them.

Speaking of Auburn, I really thought that they should have used Burns at QB, his mobility would have hurt LSU and it really became obvious they should have done that. Todd isn’t the answer for Auburn. I have to question the coaching ability for not using a guy who can escape the pressure that LSU can bring. Left tackle and punter really real bone heads when the game was on the line.

Looks like LSU found their QB in Lee Sat. night. He made some great throws in 2nd half.

I know I’m worried about us playing there on a Saturday night because of the heat they can put on a QB and JPW ain’t cool under pressure. This one decides the West and I like our chances just fine if JPW plays well and our O-line protects him.

Moreno Becoming Household Name If you have not seen him play yet, you have probably seen Knowshon Moreno on the covers of Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine and the Sporting News. Perhaps you saw him hurdle CMU’s Vince Agnew en route to 168 yards rushing and SEC Offensive Player of the Week honors during the second game of 2008. Moreno is tied for third in the nation in scoring with 54. He made his debut as a punt returner against South Carolina. He had one return for 32 yards. Moreno burst onto the scene in 2007 by recording 1,334 rushing yards and scoring 14 times. Moreno is trying to become only the second Bulldog in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Herschel Walker did it all three years of his career (1980-82).

Even Howard Cosell can see that A.J. Green is special and he’s six feet under. It took Bobo 4 games to figure out that it’s absolutely imperative to get him the ball and not just catching the ball either. Nice reverse, Bobo!

Georgia’s got as many offensive weapons as I think I’ve seen in a long time. The one area of weakness is TE, as Chandler has basically been non-existent thus far. However, I really don’t think it matters. We just need to keep feeding Knowshon, A.J., MoMass, Moore and King the rock and let them do their thing.

JT,

Let’s not compare Arizona State to any team in the SEC. ASU is bad team playing in a mediocre conference. They lost to UNLV last week.

Since you introduced the comparison, I’ll play along. ASU’s passing stats are better than Bama’s passing stats because ASU is one-dimensional. We are not. Check our stats for the season (and don’t complain about our level of competition, we’ve both played three cupcakes and an overrated team). Without the threat of a running game, of course you could shut down the pass. But make no mistake, I was pulling for you guys on Saturday.

What has Bama done over the past six years?

Good question.

Alabama has suffered massive scholarship losses under NCAA probation because a low-life booster paid a low-life Memphis High School Coach to direct a lousy player (Albert Means) toward Tuscaloosa. They have endured three Head Coaching changes due, in large part, to these NCAA sanctions. This led to the hiring of a rookie Head Coach (Mike Shula) who only agreed to come in and hold the program together because he was an alumnus of the University.

In SEC Conference Play Since 2002, they have beaten:

Arkansas 30-12 9-28-2002 Ole Miss 42-7 10-19-2002 Tennessee 34-13 10-26-2002 LSU 31-0 11-16-2002 Kentucky 27-17 9-13-2003 Ole Miss 28-7 9-11-2004 Kentucky 45-17 10-9-2004 Mississippi State 30-14 11-6-2004 South Carolina 37-14 9-17-2005 Arkansas 24-13 9-24-2005 Florida 31-3 10-1-2005 Ole Miss 13-10 10-15-2005 Tennessee 6-3 10-22-2005 Mississippi State 17-0 11-5-2005 Vanderbilt 13-10 9-9-2006 Ole Miss 26-23 10-14-2006 Vanderbilt 24-10 9-8-2007 Arkansas 41-38 9-15-2008 Ole Miss 27-24 10-13-2007 Tennessee 41-27 10-20-2007

During that time, they have played Georgia twice:

Georgia won 27-25 in 2002 Georgia won 26-23 in 2007

In 2006, Alabama reached Third Place in the BCS poll and finished the season in the Top Ten with a 10 win season.

These were the lean, dark years of our great misfortune. Thankfully, those years are now behind us.

This just in: Bama’s No. 14 is very good

Julio Jones only had one TD catch last Saturday because Bama didn’t need to throw the ball. When you can run for a TD up the middle from 87 and 62 yards out, it doesn’t make much sense to throw it.

That said, when Bama does need to pass, JPW is up to the task.

John Parker Wilson is one of the most prolific passers in school history. He has had 16 career 200-yard passing games, setting the all-time career mark at UA. He has recently surpassed Brodie Croyle’s previous school record for TD passes and total offense. He has only thrown one interception this year — and that was a tipped ball.

When JP airs it out, he won’t have to depend on Julio Jones. Alabama has had success throwing to a wide variety of receivers and running backs this year.

Against Georgia last year JPW hit 17 of 35 for 185 yards with no interceptions. Not too shabby.

Go ahead and take JP Wilson lightly. He is a reliable Quarterback and he now has the luxury of playing behind a solid Offensive Line.

I can’t wait for Saturday!

AJ Green is special and should have had his break out game against South Carolina. Would have been a bigger deal had they lost that game. What is funny is that he is just as good playing basketball, a topic I have not heard discussed. Felton would love to get his hands on AJ Green also as he may be more talented than anybody on Felton’s current roster. AJ Green led the Summerville Greenwave football team to the state championship game that they eventually lost. He also led his high school basketball team to the state championship game and was the reason they won it. Not implying that he should play Basketball on the contrary I hope he focuses all of his attention on becoming an even better wide receiver if that is possible. Just pointing out what a gifted athlete and person that he is.

RAMBLE ON!!!——I’m not sure by which of Tech’s three wins I should be more impressed:

(1) Jacksonville State (2-1), a Division I-AA team that has beaten fellow I-AA powerhouses Tennessee-Chattanooga and Alabama A&M; or

(2) Boston College (2-1), who has beaten a mediocre MAC school (Kent State) and a mediocre C-USA school (Central Florida); or

(3) Mississippi State (1-3), who has beaten only Southeastern Louisiana, and is apparently the worst team in the SEC (even Vanderbilt is much better!).

For good measure, the Yellow Jackets also lost to Virginia Tech, which started its season with an upset loss to East Carolina.

Look, I cheer for Tech most weeks as one of our home town teams, but I’m not going to lie for Tech. Tech is showing signs of life under Paul Johnson, but the program has a long way to go. If by some miracle Tech were to make it to the ACC championship game this year, that would say more about the strength of this year’s ACC than it does about the Yellow Jackets.

bama22——For the record, the 12 national titles that Alabama claims are inflated. Only seven of the 12 are AP and/or UPI/Coaches poll championships. None of the other five claimed are “consensus” championship in the sense that they represent a majority of the No. 1 ranking handed out by the 10-15 rating services that existed in the first half of the 20th century. All of the other five were minority championships awarded by 1 to 5 of the various rating services.

By the same token, if Bama can claim 12 national football championships, then LSU and Aubrun can claim 7, Tennessee 6, Georgia 5, and Florida and Ole Miss 3. See why this sounds inflated? No other SEC school, other than Bama, thatt is, claims the minority, non-consensus championships.

If only AP, UPI, or pre-modern era consensus championships are counted, then LSU has won 3, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee have 2 each, and Auburn has 1.

Any way you slice it, Bama has more “national championships” than any other single SEC team, but the Crimson Tide does NOT have more than all of the others combined. Thus concludes today’s SEC history lesson. Class dismissed.

I live Crimson.

The biggest concern I have facing UGA is Stafford, Moreno, and Green. These guys are for real. With a young Tide defense, tendencies are exposed; Stafford is the best QB in the SEC. I feel UGA will try to get Moreno and Green the ball in the flat and try to isolate the defense one on one with a fast passing attack. If they don’t, Cody and Co. will come crashing in. Look for UGA to do a lot of misdirection.
UGA does need to step up their game; they have not been as impressive this year — but they are loaded.

Personally, I hope UGA sleeps poorly the night before and jumps offsides a lot.

My prediction: If the Tide can run, they will win.

On Alabama’s National Championships.

I think Notre Dame also claims some that could be disputed. So what! I do know that Alabama should’ve been crowned NC in 1966 and 1977. I remember in 1977, The Tide was #2. Notre Dame #5 beat #1 Texas and then Notre Dame was bumped to #1. By the way, Bama destroyed Ohio State something like 36 - 6 (give or take) in the Sugar Bowl that year.
I guess there were not enough protestants voting that year (please, no offense meant to Catholicism.) So, you other schools, claim all the national championships you want; it makes the college football experience fun.

Bamafan1960——I agree that the absence of an on-the-field championship game prior the CBA/BCS era and the ensuing arguments about who was best based on poll rankings is one of the things that makes college football unique and a lot of fun. Certainly has led to a lot of water cooler arguments down through the decades.

As for Notre Dame, their athletic department is very strict in the football “championships” that they claim. They have 11: eight were awarded by AP and/or UPI; 3 were consensus championships (as described above). Interestingly, both Alabama and Notre Dame claim championships in 1930. Notre Dame was recognized by 9 of the 11 rating services in 1930; Bama was recognized by two. Hence, Notre Dame can claim the “consensus” championship for 1930; Bama cannot.

So, let’s just acknowledge when “bama22” claimed that the Crimson Tide had more national championships than all other SEC schools combined that he was comparing apples to oranges, not apples to apples, and leave it at that. Frankly, one day when our kids live to see a Division I/FBS playoff of 4, 8 or 16 teams, they probably won’t be able to understand any of this.

RAMBLE ON!!!——I’d like to think that I’m not a typical SEC-uber-alles blogger here on the AJC blogs, and conflating me with some of the SEC crazies on the AJC sports blogs is a little unfair. Comparing me to a New York Times political columnist is really unfair (and ideologically incorrect, too).

That having been said, I believe I could get every football columnist in America to agree with me that the SEC has a far stronger group of 12 football teams than the ACC has in 2008. That’s not to say, on any given Saturday, that one ACC team may not beat one SEC team. Clearly, Georgia Teach was better than Mississippi State and proved it on the field, where it matters.

As for the ACC as a whole, given the current state of competitiveness of the traditional powers (i.e. FSU, Miami and Virginia Tech), ACC football is in a down cycle in 2008. That’s not ragging on Tech or the ACC; that’s telling the objective truth. Nevertheless, Tech, UNC and even Duke are showing real signs of improvement, FSU and UM are getting top-10 recruiting classes again, and the whole thing could turn around in a couple of years, so a little humility all around may be in order.

In the mean time, this Atlanta resident will continue to cheer for Tech’s future success.

Atlanta Gator, I’m just pointing out that we have played the two toughest teams in the ACC on the road and one bad call from winning them both. Who should we be worried about left on our schedule, UGAG, well that’s only one game, and I’m looking forward to that one.

Auburn most be the 2nd worst team by yours and TrueCrimson’s standards, clearly. No wait!!!, before the GT game, all you SEC blowhards said Miss St. has one of the best defenses in the country. Damn, ya’ll make my head spin.

We could have put 50 on them.

Come to think about it, ya’ll have a few bad teams in the mighty SEC. Ark- joke, Ole Miss-joke, Tenn-very big joke! Notice, I didn’t say Vanderbilt.

…thanks for the backhanded pat anyhow. Your arrogance and objectivity could go a long way if you were writing for the NYTimes. “*

RAMBLE ON!!!,

Miss State had a pretty good team last year. They had a very good Defense. But, as I said before, that was last year.

LSU was the National Champion last year. This year, they haven’t played anyone of consequence except Auburn. Auburn likewise hasn’t played a ranked or tested team except for LSU. Both Auburn and LSU received high pre-season rankings based on their recent history. So did Clemson. You don’t drop in the polls until you lose.

We still don’t yet know how good either Auburn or LSU really is this year. Auburn might well be the second worst team in the SEC. I doubt it, but time will tell. Both teams have Quarterback controversies.

What we do know is that Miss State is currently the very worst team in the SEC. Sly Croom is a good Coach and he has worked hard to lift this team up. He has had some success, but he has a long way to go in a very competitive football conference.

Georgia Tech had an impressive win last Saturday. So did Alabama. But these games don’t provide much in the way of bragging rights because the competition was not stellar. Arkansas has a new coaching staff and they lost many good players last year. I wouldn’t be so quick to write off either Tennessee or Ole Miss.

I don’t have any prejudice toward Georgia Tech. I have friends who attended GT. Tech used to be a powerhouse team in the SEC. They are featured in the Alabama fight song. But I’m sure that you don’t appreciate the “watery grave” reference. ;-)

Objective football fans have to admit that the ACC is having a rough start this season. You should just be happy that Tech is playing well. The season is young. If things never changed, then college football would become very boring.

I’m glad that Bama is playing well. I hope that the Crimson Tide can maintain a high level of performance. I consider the Clemson game a quality win, but I have had to endure those who say that Clemson is over-rated.

If Alabama can defeat Georgia, then there will be no dispute about the quality of that win. Georgia is universally acknowledged to be one of the very best football programs in the nation. If I’m not mistaken, Tech will get their own shot at the Dawgs before this season is over. Good luck with that.

If you want to count the non concensus national titles, then Alabama has 17, as recognized by the NCAA. So shut up all of you ignorant fools who think that we overclaim “false” NC’s, at least we don’t count the fictional ones and make our own rings for them!

Georgia hasn’t played anyone with a rushing game, so who cares about the 4 yds against ASWho? South Carolina has only proved that Steve Spurrier was never really that good of a coach, anyway, almost anyone can win at Florida.

Alabama will play Ga tough, and in the end, I believe we’ll come out with a win against that pathetic “Black-out” nonsense!

Roll Tide!

Atlanta Gator/ Bamafan1960/TrueCrimson/RAMBLE ON!!!/ and the rest of you.

Before all you decide which SEC team to, “ordain”. You will have to beat USC, unless of course they beat themselves.

I know you will all start the “schedule” argument now, and it is a valid argument to make. The SEC is the best conference in the NCAA.

That being said USC is the best team in the NCAA, and they will have to be beaten on the field not on the schedule writer’s pad; and that has proven to be a hard win over the last 6 seasons.

Good Luck to you all.

PACWIN,

I had left a long post prior to the previous one, but I guess it went into the bit bucket.

I’m not going to re-type the whole thing.

I agree that USC has a good football team. I posted a link to a story about the BCS computer polls being leaked. I don’t know if this is a hoax, but USC apparently isn’t getting any love in the 6 computer polls used by the BCS.

Sorry PACWIN, I don’t remember saying anything about USC or whether The Crimson Tide should be competing for the NC.
I will say this, if USC had to compete every week in the SEC, they’d have to prove weekly that they can “get up for the big game.” I will admit this, USC could compete in the SEC, but competing and winning are two different things; slip up in the SEC and you get nailed. USC controls their destiny; no one on their schedule should beat them, but then again they’ve lost 3 games in the last three years that they should have won. Good luck; you’ve got a good team.

The best coach quote after a game came from the BEAR. I think it was 78-79. The TECH students pitched Whiskey bottles at the Bama team and coaches(low class I might add) and the radio guy asked BEAR what do you think about the game after the win and Bear picked up a thrown bottle and read OLD CROW and he smiled and said “I thought TECH fans had better TASTE”. This weekend we now have “SLICK NICK” vs “SLICK RICK” let the hating continue. It should be a classic no matter the score unless it is a BLOWOUT on either side.
