The Fearless Friday Forecast
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If Fresno State had not missed three field goals against Wisconsin, your humble prognosticator would have gone 10-0 last week. Then again, WAC officials admit their guy made a mistake in when a video review took away a Wisconsin fumble recovery at the Fresno State 26-yard line. Stuff happens so we were 9-1.
Virginia Tech managed to get past Georgia Tech by a field goal in a game the Hokies had to have. Georgia won ugly but we said they would win ugly. Notre Dame won despite getting its head coach rolled on the sideline and finishing up the game in a leg brace.
We are 25-5 for the season. Granted, there have been some easy pickings in the first three weeks but now, gentle readers, it is time for the real fun to begin. We’ve got some games, both conference and non-conference, that are going to tell us a lot. If you’re a real college football fan, these are the kind of weekends you live for.
So without hesitation and only a mild amount of trepidation, let us proceed with another award-winning edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast:
1. Georgia (3-0) at Arizona State (2-1): A little of the shine was taken off this game when Arizona State forgot to keep playing in its home game with UNLV last week. Were the Sun Devils peaking ahead to Georgia? Absolutely. This is the biggest game in Tempe since Nebraska, the two-time defending national champ, arrived in 1996. Arizona State won that game 19-0.
Will ASU be ready to play its best game of the year against the Bulldogs? No doubt about it. But here’s the deal. After a tough 14-7 win at South Carolina last week, Georgia needs to impress somebody, if only themselves. The pollsters have already dropped the Dawgs from No. 1 to No. 3. Arizona State has a very young offensive line and that will show in this game. The Sun Devils feed off the energy of the crowd and will hang in there for about a half. Then talent takes over and Georgia has more of it. Georgia 31, Arizona State 17.
2. Mississippi State (1-2) at Georgia Tech (2-1): The Techsters almost won their second straight ACC road game last week in Blacksburg but could not overcome three turnovers. Now the Yellow Jackets return home where they will face a pretty stout Mississippi State defense that held Auburn to just a field goal. Bulldogs coach Sylvester Croom told me that he started working on Georgia Tech’s option attack back in the summer because it is so hard to defend. But it’s the Georgia Tech defense that will win this one. The Mississippi State offense will not score a touchdown for the second straight week. Georgia Tech 14, Mississippi State 6.
3. LSU (2-0) at Auburn (3-0): Auburn’s offense is just a mess. Head coach Tommy Tuberville said so and so does his new OC, Tony Franklin. But there ain’t nothing wrong with that Auburn defense. If Tuberville gets his way this will be an ugly, ugly football game that gets decided in the final minutes. LSU has the overall edge on talent but Auburn is playing at home. Tuberville always get his guys ready to play in these kinds of games. Auburn has won 9 of its last 12 against Top 10 opponents. In our Blue Plate Double Platinum Upset Special of the week, we’re going with Auburn. Auburn 10, LSU 7.
4. Florida (2-0) at Tennessee (1-1): The Gators have had a week off since beating Miami at home on Sept. 6. Tennessee’s fans have been in a foul mood since the Vols lost to UCLA on Sept. 1 and frankly, they have a right to be. There are still a lot of questions about this Tennessee team. It hasn’t yet established a clear identity of what it wants to do on offense or defense. It better have some answers by 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The energy in Neyland Stadium will be high when the game starts because it’s the Gators. But that might change quickly if the Vols get down by double digits. Tennessee’s only shot is to run the football, shorten the game and limit Tim Tebow’s possessions. But I predict something will happen in the special teams that will put Tennessee in a hole and force the Vols to start flinging the ball all over Shields-Watkins Field. That will not be good. Florida 31, Tennessee 20.
5. Alabama (3-0) at Arkansas (2-1): After a sloppy game against Tulane on Sept. 6, Alabama got back on track and looked like a dangerous football team last week against Western Kentucky. But now comes the real test as the Crimson Tide goes on the road in the SEC. Arkansas caught a break last week because it did not have to play Texas in Austin because of the hurricane. So the Hogs will be a little more rested and prepared. It won’t matter. Alabama’s defense is too strong and now QB John Parker Wilson has some real weapons at his disposal. This game is always tough and Arkansas will put up a good fight. Still, the Tide rolls to 4-0. Alabama 28, Arkansas 7.
6. Vanderbilt (3-0) at Ole Miss (2-1): The Commodores have a chance to go 4-0 for the first time since 2005. This will be one of the better games of the day because both teams know that at the end of the year a win could mean the difference in going to a bowl game and staying at home for the holidays. Vanderbilt has a real shot because of a very underrated defense and quarterback Chris Nickson. If the Commodores force Ole Miss QB Jevan Snead into a couple of turnovers, they could sneak out of Vaught-Hemingway with a win. I like the Rebels at home on a field goal at the buzzer. Ole Miss 24, Vanderbilt 21.
7. Wake Forest (2-0) at Florida State (2-0): The last time the Wake Forest Demon Deacons invaded Tallahassee, they hung a 30-0 embarrassment around the neck of Bobby Bowden. That might not have been rock bottom for Bowden’s once-proud program, but you could sure see it from there. Now the Seminoles have regrouped and were impressive in their early march through a pair of cupcakes-Western Carolina and Chattanooga. If Florida State has actually improved under the watchful eye of OC Jimbo Fisher, here is where we’ll find out. I’m tempted to pick the Seminoles, but I just think Wake Forest is too solid with a really good defense and QB Riley Skinner. Sam Swank kicks another game-winning field goal. Wake Forest 27, Florida State 24.
8. Virginia Tech (2-1) at North Carolina (2-0): I said before the season that North Carolina would be the most improved team in the ACC. If the Tar Heels win Saturday in Chapel Hill against the Hokies, they just might be good enough to win the Coastal Division. The Hokies have finally settled on a quarterback in Tyrod Taylor but Bud Foster’s defense still doesn’t have the nasty streak that I’m used to seeing. Carolina’s defense, however, knows how to lay the lumber to the opposition. The Tar Heels have too many offensive weapons with QB T.J. Yates and Brandon Tate, the best all-purpose player in the ACC. North Carolina 24, Virginia Tech 14.
9. Miami (1-1) at Texas A&M (1-1): The Hurricanes showed a little life two weeks ago at Florida, losing 26-3 in a very deceptive final score. The defense has a chance to be pretty decent before the season over and will go against a bad offense with a beat up quarterback in Stephen McGee (shoulder), who might not play after starting 29 straight games for the Aggies. Miami could use a solid win on the road. They will get it on Saturday at College Station. Miami 17, Texas A&M 14.
10. East Carolina (2-0) at N.C. State (1-2): Here we are in week four and N.C. State is still looking for its first offensive touchdown against a Division I-A team. East Carolina, meanwhile, is 3-0 with wins over West Virginia and Virginia Tech. None of that matters. This is a huge rivalry with a lot of bad blood. A year ago the Wolfpack was 1-5 and went to Greenville, N.C., and spanked the Pirates, a future bowl team, 34-20. The two schools are only 70 miles apart. East Carolina wins but it won’t be easy. East Carolina 17, N.C. State 10.

Tony….I agree with most of your picks. I do think UGA will win bigger than you projected and I think you are wrong on the AU-LSU game. If Auburn cannot score against MSU, there is no way they will score on LSU. They have too many issues protecting the ball and there QB situation is AUful! LSU wins this one somewhere in the neighborhood of 21-3.

By week 4, most would expect to have cleared the storm and gained enough altitude to shake the turbulance. Besides, as much as America loves a winner, time loves a hero and underdogs find a way to screw up the party. This could be that weekend where it goes haywire…

I think The Dawgs will open up and start really clicking this week. I think The Dawgs win by 10.
Auburn over LSU? I think someone spiked your coffee this morning my friend. LSU isn’t the team of last year and Auburn has an impressive Defense. But when that defense is on the field all day long against a pretty good LSU offense then LSU wins by 10 easy.
Vandy will beat Ole Miss.
My SEC upset of the week is UT over UF. I know everyone else says otherwise but UF plays in Knoxville and when orange meets orange in Tenn., Dan’l Boone wins this one close.

Colonel Rebel…I know BAMA fans get a hard time for talking trash seeing the rut we have been in the last several years but nothing makes me laugh more than an Ole Miss fan talking trash after 3 straight 3-4 win seasons. Especially when it is about a team you have not even reach double digit wins against in the entire series. The same will happen this year when your teams visits Bryant-Denny. It may be a close game but in the end, it will be the same result which is a BAMA win!! Keep those positive thoughts though. They are good for you!! ROLL TIDE!!!

Yes, brandland…and running the same 20 plays very ineffectively. You’d think they could have atleast become adept at those 20 plays by now. AU just doesnt have the players to run that type of offense yet. I’m not saying Tubs won’t get them, he just doesnt have them now.

Tony,
I like most of the picks.
I think you’re dead wrong on the LSU/Auburn pick. Auburn can only muster 3 points against Miss State and they are going to beat LSU? It just doesn’t figure.
Speaking of MSU, I fear that Miss State will capitalize on one or more of Tech’s numerous turnovers and make a game of it. Give me the Croomies and the points and call this one my upset special of the week. MSU 17 GT 12 (with a missed extra point).
I think Arkansas will keep the game closer than most folks believe. The Tide tends to play to the level of competition and may well be looking past this game. I’ll take the points in this one too.
By Bob
September 19, 2008 9:52 AM | Link to this
Georgia doesn’t need to impress anyone. Georgia needs to win, and they will. Georgia 35 ASU 14.
There are Georgia fans that cheer for Tech when they aren’t playing Georgia. I am not one of them. Go Sly and Go Bulldogs. But unfortunately, Tech wins. Georgia Tech 14 MSU 10.
There is alot of football left to be played, but Auburn might end up the most overrated team in the SEC this year. If that was a top 10 team last week I am Elvis Presley. LSU 17 Auburn 10.
This might have upset potential if Tennessee didn’t suck so bad. I think Tennessee has the most difficult schedule in the league, not Georgia. This will be one of many ugly losses this year for the Vols. Florida 31 Tennessee 14.
“After a sloppy game against Tulane on Sept. 6, Alabama got back on track and looked like a dangerous football team last week against Western Kentucky.”
Please for the love of god tell me that was a joke Barnhart. Alabama 24 Arkansas 14.
If you cannot root for Vandy you have no soul. This is their year, except against Georgia. Vandy 24 Ole Miss 23.
YAWN. WF 24 FSU 17.
Can somebody get me an extra pillow?

(1) If the real Dawgs show up, this game will not be close. Sun Devils’ pride may keep them in it for two quarters, but they do not have the horses to keep up with a motivated UGA squad.
(2) I have no idea. I want to say that last week’s 3-2 MSU loss to Auburn says a lot about the MSU offense, but I suspect it may say more about AU’s defense. I wouldn’t bet on this game if it were the only one. No clue.
(3) Sorry, but I disagree with Tony on this one. Both AU and LSU have excellent defensive teams, but AU has yet to generate any offense against top-tier programs. LSU, however, has an offense. Edge: LSU.
(4) Florida wins by 10, but I wish Spikes had not provided CPF with so much motivational bulletin board material.
(5) Bama. By a lot. Welcome to the SEC, Coach Petrino. You may wish you were back coaching the Falcons.
(6) Motivational intangibles and karma favor Vanderbilt. Go ‘Dores! Four and Oh!
(7) WFU-FSU. Toss up. The outcome of this game may determine whether Bobby Bowden returns next year. Is their still life left in the old dog? We shall see.
(8) Signs of football life in Chapel Hill? Not since Mack Brown left for Austin, but Virginia Tech looks vulnerable this year.
(9) This could be a major program re-building win for the ‘Canes and Coach Shannon, or a temporary setback. I’m betting on a 10-point ‘Canes win.
(10) East Carolina’s earlier wins over Virginia Tech and West Virginia don’t look so shiny now that we have seen how mediocre those two teams appear, but the Pirates are still plenty good enough to euthanize the miserable Wolfpack.
Good luck to all of your favorite teams. May the best teams win (they usually do).

Wow, Tony not picking FSU against another ACC School check the records but unofficially, this is a first? FSU gets revenge in a close one. 31-28.
Auburn won’t score a TD on LSU. LSU 29 Tubby 6
UF and UT…see last year, another ugly one.
VT/UNC…stay away, find some other games to pick.
Vandy goes to 4-0 (and this is the toughest conference in the country?)
Miss. State gets past the 50 yard line 3 times, scores 6 points. GT 27 St. 6
After a 2 hour postponement for the ASU game due to a UGA fans running through security barriers at the airport and stadium, with strange bags (case of PBRs). Dawgs in a hard fought defeat goes down 58 -17. The game is a bit closer than the score though.

What do you mean this is the biggest game in Tempe since 1996? That’s an arrogant statement made by someone who thinks that ASU is some mid-major program that gets excited whenever a big conference team deigns to play it. USC (a team you may have heard of) plays in Tempe nearly every other year. NEWS FLASH!!!—USC (that’s Southern Cal, not S. Caro.) causes more waves when it visits than UGA does. In other words, this isn’t the mega-game of the year for ASU, it’s simply the opportunity to play, and perhaps beat, a good team that will help its own bowl position.

I don’t know what the over/under is but I don’t expect more than 25 points to be scored in the LSU@Auburn. Both defenses are good. Special teams will be a factor.LSU’s only weakness are QB and punter. The baseball score in Starkville tells me Auburn has issues on offense. Is Tim Lester gonna play? how are the backups?

Your record so far impressive, but you have some losers this week…..
no way LSU gets beat! no way Miss State gets beat. No way FSU gets beat.
And I’m going out on a limb here and going to say Tenn is going to win Sat afternoon. I have NOT been impressed with the “turds” so far this season and I think this is a trouble game for them. Then I think Urban starts feeling a little heat down in G-Ville. And I don’t mean the weather.

DAWGS cover the 7 by the power of two. That ought to keep the Techies busy a few minutes. UF, UT, SC, Aub, Bama fans don’t even try, you don’t have enough fingers and toes and besides it’ll make your head hurt.
— Ms. State at Tech: Chauncey Gardner Webb Ha Ha I like that. I like to watch. Our little Jackets are going to be shocked to face a decent defense. Missy St. intercepts a pitch out and dribbles it in for a TD. Nerds lose straight up.
— Alabama at Arkansas: Nick Saban vs. Bobby Petrino. Do they get ESPN in the underworld? Good one. It’s hard to figure out who to despise more, Nick Satan or Bobby Puketrino. No it ain’t. Bama covers the spread and Petrino secretly flies to Podunk Idaho to discuss the local high school coaching position.
— Florida at Tennessee: It’s time for somebody to let all the hot air out of Urban Lyer and those incredibly obnoxious UF fans and The Great Pumpkin is just the guy for the job. Hard fought game. Vols lead 21-20 with two seconds left and the lizards on the UT 20. Urban Cryer calls two timeouts to ice his own kicker who promptly kicks it into his center’s butt. Vols win straight up at home.
— LSU at Auburn: Auburn has a pretty good defense but so does LSU. Auburns offense…Oh my GAWD!! Sorry tiggers, tough night in Tubbyland. LSU 21 Auburn 4.
— Wake Forest at FSU: Gee Whiz Bobby Bowden and I think you’re due for a stronger prescription Joe Pa have been around so long oil has been discovered in their shoes. I just think there is too much talent for FSU to be bad for this long. Noles win despite the old geezer.
Heat? What heat? Let ASU come play in South Georgia on a Saturday night and then let’s talk.

Imbecile - Probably an appropriate name. Your just jealous because you lack the creativity of us Dawgs fans. PAC 10 is weak conference of tomato cans(sans USC). That UCLA win was a fluke…UGA, LSU, Bama, & UF would dismantle the Bruins! BTW, let USC play in the SEC, and see how “great” their record is. They don’t make it through the season without 2-3 losses (annually). Who do you pull for?…UC-Berkley?

The family and I are having a great time in Tempe. The weather and scenery are great. Everyday there more red and black up and down mill ave. My guess is we’ll have between 8 and 12 k fans here. I can see the need for us to expand our uga brand, as some folks here ask if the G, stands for Green bay. A good showing of real UGA foot ball willgo a long way in expanding our reputation west of the Mississippi. This is the beginning of UGA,a westward expansion, ok state, Colorado, oregon…USC. Big plans for now and years to come. How bout them Dawgs!

Tony, Why would Arizona State play their best game of the season against Georgia? Because they’re a non-conference opponent and because they are ranked #3 and dropping. I’m sure they’ll get up more for Georgia than they will for the #1 ranked team that is actually in their league. Didn’t you say the same kind of crap about South Carolina, Ga Southern…….. I know your in Georgia, but as a journalist you have an obligation not to feed the delusion that the number 10 team in the country is really number 1. In the end it won’t matter it’ll be the same old excuses for the best 9-3 (LSU, Auburn and FL, unless they lose to Paul Johnson also) team in the country.

I’ll be pulling for the dawgs this weekend as well as my beloved tide. I think it would be awesome if UGA fans call for a blackout next week for 2 4-0 teams in the top 10. We will be in all white and UGA in their blackshirts on a Sat. night. Couldn’t get much better than that.Should be a great game.
Knowshon will go up against the mammoth Mount Cody and the nation’s no. 1 rushing defense which I expect will still be No. 1 after pummeling Arkansas. If he can’t run then it will be up to Stafford to pass the dawgs to a win and establish himself as a Heisman candidate. On the flip side it will be just as interesting watching UGAs fast defense going against Bama’s physical ground game. And what about Julio Jones vs A.J. Green. There will be some great storylines to this ball game.
I’ll ignore the smack talking by Bama fans like Nacho and by UGA fans returning the favor. As a native New Yorker who grew up a Bama and Penn St. fan I’ve lived half my life in Bama and half of it in Atlanta. I’ve driven through the Georgia countryside for work and I can tell you that Alabama aint got nothing on Georgia when it comes to the number of doublewide trailers. Likewise I can tell you that Montgomery and B’ham have ghetto areas every bit as dangerous as Atlanta. Any outsider with any common sense can tell you that culturally once you drive 20 miles outside of Atlanta there is no difference between Georgia and the rest of the south. All you haters on both sides just give it a rest and lets hope both teams are 4-0 for next week.
BTW, I largely agree with Tony’s picks except for LSU-Auburn. I think with Auburn’s offense sputtering they just won’t have the ability to play defense the whole game and come away with the win. LSU still has way too much overall talent. I think they pull it out late. Too bad Roswell Ed isn’t here today. He always cracks me up.

Good points, USC is definitely a bigger game for ASU.
I think UGA will win this weekend, but it will be close. Less that 2 touchdowns, maybe 10 points.
I would love to see UGA play for a NC, so USC can put a good, old fashion A$$ Whoopin on them, and shut the whiners up for good.
But if ASU could pull off the upset, that might do it.
Hell, if UCLA can drop UT, why not ASU over UGA. Hmmmmmm, I think I’ll stick with the Doggs.

If UGA beats ASU by 14, and USC hangs 50 on them, and wins by 21.
And UT plays UGA tough while USC beats UCLA by 30.
Does that mean anything?

Many, including myself, have stated on many posts on the AJC that UNC will win the coastal. Miami is the second best. But I still enjoyed the writing style to put lots of words on the blog without actually stating anything of merit. I can do that equally as well as this very post can attest. See what I mean…….

I enjoy your blog, read it everyday. You are, in my opinion, the foremost expert on football here in the south. I have to note to you though, that for this week, you left off a pretty big game at the next level. How about the APP-JMU game? That one is about as big as you can get in the regular season for I-AA (FCS whatever). By the way, you are correct, ASU (Arizona not APP) will be up for my ‘dawgs. Why? It’s a nationally televised game. They don’t get to show there stuff to the east coast much. Of course they’ll be up for this as much as a game against USC! Who wouldn’t?

All these Bama fans this year on this blog is a trip! You will be 4-0 next week and then get a rude awakening. Not even Forest Gump will save the day. You are much overrated and I think will have a “tuff” game this week. You act like your program has been competitive the last 10 years or so. Well, you have when it comes to NCAA rules violations. But don’t fret, St Nick will finally get caught and the probations will start again. But enjoy the ride while it lasts.

45-14 UF. 31-14 until late in the third quarter and UF will score 14 points after UT’s defense quits for the 1,000th straight game. Percy Harvin will rush for 100 and catch for another 100 and Tim Tebow will barely have to show up. Crompton will help by throwing 4 picks and Fulmer will be gone before seasons end so they can have the upper hand in landing Skip Holtz. And there should really be no debate over UGA against a PAC-10 team winner of FL/GA will be the National Champ… period.

Hey Will,
U say Bama hasn’t been competetive in 10 years? R u just plain stupid? We won the SEC in 99, won 10 games and won the west in 02 but didn’t get to play for the sec cause of probation, won 10 games in 05 and spent half the season ranked 3rd in the country and rolling to 9-0 before we finally lost in ot to LSU. Do a little research before you run your freaking mouth. In your lifetime you probably got so used to seeing Bama dominate that when we are only down to the level of other good programs over 10 years that you then have the mistaken impression that we weren’t relevant at all for 10 years. You sir, are an idiot.
And quit living in the past and talking about the last 10 years. If you insist in living in the past lets compare your program’s accomplishments to Bama’s over the last 100 years. Want to do that? Didn’t think so!
Lastly, u wanna talk about probation? Bama has had 2 major infractions cases, UGA and Auburn have had 6 each. All this according to the NCAA. Look it up beyotch! And don’t even get me started on Jim Harrick, Jan Kemp, etc. What’s that about the pot calling the kettle black?

Have you watched FSU this year? Granted the teams were I-AA, but FSU almost lost to a few I-AA teams in the recent past (e.g., the Citadel).
This is NOT the same Jeff Bowden FSU squad. Jimbo Fisher can actually coach and gameplan (I wish UM would have hired him instead of Patrick Nix), he also has a lot of his own players this year.
FSU is going to pound Wake, it will not even be close: FSU 36 Wake 14. BTW, ACC champioship game will be nothing like what the “experts” predicted; it will be FSU v. UM with whatever team lost during the regular season match-up winning the ACC championship.

FSU took both teams to the whoodshed, while holding each to under 190 yards total offense. FSU recievers are very good and the first- and second-string QBs are so much better than what they have had since Weinke (Drew Weatherford is third-string).

FSU didn’t just play 1-AA teams - they played terrible 1-AA teams. Those two sorry programs went 3-19 last year, and they only got up to 3 wins because they played each other.
Fisher was the coach last year, and WFU stuffed his offense then. It will happen again.

I was….
Right. The Dawgs dominated the game on both sides of the ball. The score doesn’t reveal how badly we beat Az State.
Wrong. GT is for real. They beat a great defensive team. I thought it would be a gut busting game. I was right - Miss State got their guts busted.
Right. LSU beat Auburn but the scoring by both teams was much higher than I thought. It was a close game and a heartbreaker for Auburn. Both have great defenses and decent offenses.
Wrong. I stuck my neck out and said this would be the upset of the week. UT had a chance to win until the first kickoff. UT made mistakes and has great talent but UF wacked that hound dog.
Right. Alabama dominated Arkansas and is a legit top 5 team. I have been warning all Dawg Fans about The Tide since the end of last season. Next Saturday will be one heck of a game in Athens.
Right. Vandy is a good football team.
