Burning question for Dawgs: To blitz or not to blitz?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Will Georgia have to blitz in order to get to Rudy Carpenter?: At times in the fourth quarter last Saturday, South Carolina’s Chris Smelley looked way too comfortable throwing the ball against the Georgia defense. I heard from a number of fans who wanted to know why DC Willie Martinez didn’t blitz more in order to put pressure on Smelley. Part of the reason is that Steve Spurrier’s quarterbacks know exactly where the ball should go when the other team blitzes. And the last thing you want to do with a 14-7 lead is to give up a big play. It may be painful for the fans to watch, but that’s the percentage play.

Georgia faces an even more difficult situation Saturday night at Arizona State. Rudy Carpenter has been around forever and has seen just about every blitz you can throw at a quarterback. Arizona State gave up 55 quarterback sacks last season so Carpenter is not afraid to get hit. If Georgia can’t get enough pressure with its front four there will be some risk involved with sending an extra man. Carpenter is good enough to burn a blitz. So the smart thing may be to back off so as not to give up the big play. But the risk there is that your defense may stay on the field too long and get worn out. This will be the most interesting chess match in this game.

2. Will Tennessee punt the ball to Brandon James? After watching this guy for two years it should be obvious. You just don’t kick it to the punt return specialist from Florida. James took one 83 yards to the house against Tennessee last year and has the ability to break open a game every time he touches the ball. If Tennessee is going to have any chance against the Gators in Knoxville, the Vols can’t have any big plays go against them in the kicking game. Tennessee may have to give up some yardage by kicking away from him, but you just have to do it. Bottom line: If he touches the ball four times in this game, he’s going to break one. But here is a concern if you’re Tennessee. The Vols are still using backup punter Chad Cunningham while Britton Colquitt serves his five-game suspension. Cunningham had one blocked against UCLA. He is a tad slow in getting his punt off. Do you want him thinking about something other than kicking it straight down the field? In an effort to avoid kicking to James, does Tennessee risk getting another one blocked?

3. Can Wake Forest make it three in a row against Florida State? Florida State is still missing some starters because of the academic suspension but the Seminoles do get WR Preston Parker, their best playmaker, back for the ACC opener against the Deacons (2-0). Wake Forest beat Florida State 30-0 two years ago in Tallahassee and 24-21 last October. Florida State and their fans need a sign that the program has taken a step forward after two straight 7-6 seasons. Wake Forest is a very good team, but Florida State should win at home. But keep this in mind. Wake Forest is a very resourceful team that has already forced eight turnovers in two games. FSU can’t turn the ball over and expect to win.

4. Will LSU-Auburn be another nail biter?: History says yes. Here are the LSU-Auburn scores from the past four years: 2004-Auburn, 10-9; 2005-LSU, 20-17; 2006-Auburn, 7-3; 2007-LSU 30-24. If LSU had not thrown a touchdown pass with one second left last season, Auburn would have won that game 24-23. On paper LSU looks like more than a touchdown favorite because what may be the best offensive and defensive lines in college football. Auburn appears to be in trouble because they are having a tough time with Tony Franklin’s new spread offense. But you just know this one is going to be close.

5. Will Georgia Tech have two turnovers or less? The Yellow Jackets had three turnovers against Boston College and won. Last week they had three more at Virginia Tech and lost. Looks like the magic number is going to be three this season. Can Georgia Tech run the option for 60 minutes against a good Mississippi State defense and turn it over less than three times? If they do, the Yellow Jackets will win.

No doubt UGA needs to blitz more. That’s always been one of my biggest faults with Martinez…he’s too conservative on blitzes. If the DL doesn’t get pressure on the QB, Martinez often waits too long (or too infrequently) sents the LBs &/or Safeties. With the loss of Owens, the DL isn’t as effective & thus needs more blitz packages.

Auburn will win this game, it will not be a struggle. Tuberville and Franklin have been sandbagging for this game. The corndogs start 0-1 in the conference. Auburn starts it’s march to the Dome where it won’t get the chance to beat UGa twice since the Pups won’t get there! I wouldn’t be surprised to see UGa to lose 3-4 games, they have looked pathetic to say the least.

Hey Anthony,

There was still time on the clok AFTER LSU’s touch downpass so drop the AU would have won 24-23. Man, its a sad place that you live in whereby you ignore the facts to suit you opinions.

TigerBait - you are correct. LSU was in FG range (around the 25 IIRC. They still would have had time to at least try a FG. Making it is another story but it would not have been over after that pass into the end zone.

I haven’t seen anyone yet mention the great play by UGA DE Jarius Wynn on the fumble by Davis on the goal line last week. He literally knocked the South Carolina LT on his butt, into the backfield — which allowed Curran and others to make the play.

Roswell Ed….You are right. AU has been sandbagging. They wanted to make their offense the laughing stock of college football just so they could really open it up and shock the world against LSU. The fumbles were intentional and Todd really doesnt have the arm strength of a pop warner QB. If AU’s offense in anyway resembles what they showed last week, LSU will win BIG!!!

Carpenter is a veteran qb and he has to be tough as nails to take that much pounding last season, but…he is also a world class prima donna. UGA needs to throw everything but the kitchen sink at him in the first quarter. He only maintains his composure for a limited time; once you get him yelling at his offensive line—-which I saw happen in at least two of their losses last year—-it’s all over but the shouting.

Bring it early, Coach M, and bring it often.

Ga gave up big plays on the final drive to SC w/o blitzing.

It’s scary to think that SC started their final drive on their own 8 yd. line with 1:42 on the clock with 1 timeout.

Defense was not the problem in that game, in my opinion it was coaching.

How do you give Richard Samuel 10 touches (includes incomplete passes thrown his way) on the road at SC, and you redshirt K. Moreno. Where is Caleb King, R. Samuel looks like a linebacker trying to be an RB. Get Caleb King going now, coach em up! C. King is in the endzone on a brilliant call down on the goal line late, that R. Samuel tried to go outside on b/c he was in high school last yr.

I counted at least 8 total wasted plays on off. in that game.

It reminded me of the brutal back to back 13pts put up against the Zooker and the Gators. We reverted back to our old ways on offense, playing tight.

Tony, you really need to alternate the answers to make it a tough quiz. The answer to all 5 questions is “no.”

UGA should be able to dictate the game at ASU, unless they play down to the level of competition.

The Vols won’t punt to BJ, unless it’s a mistake. Bottom line is that it won’t matter. UF should clean up on UT.

Wake’s run is slowing down and FSU is rebounding.

LSU will wax Auburn.

Tech will continue to fumble the ball multiple times per game. We can only hope that the fumbles don’t lead directly to points, because PJ’s HS offense will struggle against MSU’s D. This O is not designed to play catch-up.

AZ State doesn’t have a chance against the Bulldogs…they’re too slow…this game will turn out similar to the USC vs. Ohio State game, i.e., lots of hype and no substance…last year’s Oregon vs. AZ State game in Eugene, OR (which was attended by ESPN’s Gameday Crew) had much of the same allure of this game, though, of course, this is a pseudo-battle between teams from two different conferences…the Bulldogs win this game by at least 21 points…other than USC, and maybe Oregon, the Pathetic 10 has nobody that can rival the big boys from the SEC…Mr. Barnhart, you’re absolutely correct about the Brandon James factor in the UT/Florida game…let’s not forget, however, about an even bigger factor in Knoxville this weekend, i.e., Tim Tebow…if the Gators get out ahead early in this game, it’ll get ugly quickly in the first half…Auburn’s lackluster offense is in direct contrast to what everyone was expecting this year…this game may be won in the trenches as you noted…interestingly, though, Mr. Barnhart, is that you’ve mentioned the strength of LSU’s offensive and defensive lines…the one offensive line that may rival LSU’s is Oklahoma’s O-line…they’re fast…Tuberville will manage a hard fought, smash mouth, “un-Pac 10 like” victory in Auburn this weekend…I suspect this may the hardest hitting, most physical game of the year…it’ll be similar to the Florida @ LSU game last year…

Tommy Tubs makes a lot of money from Apple because a lot of people buy songs from iTunes and Apple is contractually obligated to pay 99¢ to Tubs for every song they sell.

I am sure that the coaching staff will put together a defensive plan that will be much more effective than anything Tony can think of or plan for.

You blitz on some down and distance situations and you play for the draw in others.

Sometimes you play a nickle defense.

If you just want to blitz and fail, then write a column about John Tunuta and GT or ND.

Roswell Ed get a grip and a lobotomy please.

ChattHills Jacket learn to spell and for god sakes try to write complete sentences. You’ve obviously never been on a college campus.

  1. No, don’t depend on the blitz. Throw one in there now and then though. South Carolina only scored 7 on us and most of their yards were when we were playing that d*mn prevent defense.

  2. Why tempt fate? Pouch it, drop kick it, or whatever. You don’t pick up a poisonous snake if you know it will bite you.

  3. The game is in Tallahassee so give the ‘noles a chance.

  4. It appears Auburns offense is in real trouble. It appears the DAWGS are going to have to beat the SEC east champs twice this year anyway so it really doesn’t matter who wins here. Guess I have to pull for the blue and orange kitties since we will be in the spread/wing-t option attack stopping mode after Aub and GT to end the regular season.

  5. The nerds set the school record for fumbles in a season and the DAWGS set the school record for most fumbles returned for a touchdown in a game.

Got a feeling Knowshon runs loose this weekend. The DAWGS dominate the time of possession and make Carpenter’s passing ability a moot point.

Usually blitzing can help defend a strong passing offense, but UGA need to improve their ability to cover first. Secondly theu need to get pressure from the normal 4 man rush. We finished #2 in the country in January after having lost to SC. We are ahead of last year at this point.

The Spread Eagles are gonna have to score more than 5 this week. History says that this should be a close game. I’ll believe it when I see it. The only question is: Just how bad is LSU? We know how bad Auburn is.

UNLV beat AZ St by sitting back in a cover 2. Last year they were beat by the blitz. I say mix up the coverages, run the nickle D a lot, fake the blitz on some plays, send everybody but the waterboy on others, but not too often. Blitz on every play like GT did last year and a good QB will eat your lunch. If You watched the GT-BC game last year You saw what a good QB {Ryan} can do for a blitzing team. Evidently AZ St doesn’t like to throw into a zone because Carpenter b*** about them taking the ball out of his hands last week. The Dogs can’t rely on them making the same mistake this week. They may have overlooked UNLV, I don’t think they will overlook UGA. Mikey in the SAV

With all due respect Mikey did you even watch the game and if you did were you paying attention. Martinez reverted back to his old ways of playing soft zones and the dreaded 3-3-5 prevent defense, that is why South Carolina got all those yards in the 4th quarter. When we were playing the 4-3-4 and rushed a LB occasionally for 3 quarters we shut them down except on their TD when we went to prevent they were able to move down the field on us and then we had a coverage breakdown and they scored.

Part of being a great coordinator is recognizing what the other team is doing and making in game adjustments, but only as needed. I know that part of our problem last week was that we are thin on the DL because of injuries. We will be fine after this week when Battle comes back.

We became a great team last year when he started disguising coverages, stunting with the DL and throwing in LB and DB blitzes occasionally starting in the second half of the Vandy game. It looks like Richt will have to chew out CM and the defensive players like he did in the locker room of the Vandy game. Coincidentally that is when a couple of the seniors on that team went to Coach Richt about loosening up. Part of our problem against South Carolina has been we have been tight and not having fun when we play them. Its has become a mental thing.

Dear FattJacket, if Sanford is a septic tank, what does that make the Dodd? Every Saturday it is full of…oh wait, it’s never full. Because there isn’t a real team there unless Georgia is playing Tech in Atlanta…Roswell Dead, Auburn is a joke this year, and everybody is laughing…And as for USC, FIGHT ON against that weak a$$ conference, and we’ll take you to the woodshed in January. Better hope you don’t lose another game to those powerhouse football players from Stanford! And by the way, God DOES hate LA, that’s why he tries to kill it with smog, gangs, earthquakes and fires.

There’s a reason the ESPN Gameday Crew is in Auburn and not in Tempe…I wonder why?

Good to see Roswell Ed is back. I check this board for the sole reason of seeing how Roswell Ed is going to crack me up today. I think he is just being over the top in his comments but if he is actually serious than that makes me laugh even harder. Its hard to fathom he could actually be serious and I guess that’s why he’s funnier than George Carlin. Ya gotta love this guy. Can’t wait to see what he’s going to say next week when its Bama versus Georgia week. He will be in Aubie heaven knowing that one of his 2 most hated teams has got to lose.
