No. 3 Georgia still has some work to do

So what did we learn over the weekend?

1. Georgia still has some work to do: Bulldog fans need to be careful not to read too much into Georgia’s 14-7 win at South Carolina. It’s one of those strange quirks in college football but most of the time Georgia just seems to play an ugly game when the Dawgs go to Columbia. Any time you can win on the road in the SEC, you take it and you don’t worry about the style points. It’s just too hard.

But having said that, it’s clear that the offensive line needs to get better both in run blocking and protecting the passer. South Carolina has one of the better defensive front sevens in the SEC but LSU is better and I think Auburn may be just as good. South Carolina geared its defense so that Knowshon Moreno would not have a big day (he had only 79 yards and his longest run was 11 yards). Georgia has to get more pressure on the quarterback, even if the Bulldogs need to send an extra person. South Carolina moved the ball pretty effectively in the fourth quarter because their quarterback, Chris Smelley, was not pressured enough.

Georgia is No. 3 now and based on their play on the field, and the play of Southern Cal and Oklahoma, that is about where the Bulldogs should be. But it is no time for the Bulldawg Nation to panic and think they will be treated like Auburn in 2004.

I will stick with my original position: If Georgia goes 13-0 against that schedule, the Bulldogs will be in the big game. But Georgia will not go 13-0 unless some areas of the team improve.

2. Overcoming turnovers will be a way of life at Georgia Tech this season: Last week Georgia Tech was able to overcome its turnovers and win at Boston College. On Saturday the Yellow Jackets could not overcome putting the ball on the ground and committing way too many penalties at Virginia Tech. The learning curve and execution curve on Paul Johnson’s offense is very steep. In the short term there are simply going to be mistakes by young players who are trying to become comfortable in this system. The question will be whether or not Georgia Tech can make enough big plays on offense and defense to counter balance the mistakes. There will come a day when the offense clicks like a well-oiled machine and mistakes will be rare. But that time is not now. For now, Tech fans had just better buckle up and hold on. This season is going to be a wild ride. Fun, but wild.

3. Southern Cal can punch its ticket to the BCS championship game: Southern Cal was just toying with Ohio State Saturday night. It was men playing against boys. Sorry, Ohio State fans. It’s just the truth. The score could have easily been worse than 35-3 if Pete Carroll had wanted to run it up. As I said last week, you can go ahead and plan on the Trojans being in the BCS championship game on Jan. 8. I know that Southern Cal lost to Stanford, a 41-point favorite, last season. This team is not going to do that. It has great leadership and a quarterback (Matt Sanchez) who is a gamer. It gets Oregon, Arizona State, and California at home and after watching UCLA, California, and Arizona State get beat this, the rest of the Pac-10 looks pretty average.

This team has an awesome offense led by Sanchez and a scary defense. I could be wrong but as of today I think everybody else is playing for No. 2.

4. Auburn’s offense had better get better-and fast: Auburn’s offense made so many mistakes on Saturday’s night’s 3-2 (yes, that’s right, 3-2) win over Mississippi State that coach Tommy Tuberville basically quit counting. The installation of Tony Franklin’s spread offense has not gone particularly smoothly. All I can say is that whatever problems exist had better be worked out by the time No. 6 LSU (2-0) comes to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night. Auburn has a chance to win that game because its defense is really, really good. But if the offense keeps making mistakes Auburn can’t win.

Part of the problem, Franklin told me Sunday night, is that the Tigers are trying to do too much with the offense and mistakes usually follow that. Look for Auburn to really simplify things this Saturday night.

5. Tennessee may be headed for a beat down: I do not believe in comparative scores but this one is hard to ignore. Tennessee played a lousy game and lost at UCLA 27-24 (overtime) on Sept. 1. UCLA was probably feeling pretty good about things and then the Bruins went to BYU, where they were taken to the woodshed 59-0. So if you’re Tennessee, you woke up Sunday morning knowing that the team that beat you got more than half a hundred laid on them in Provo. You also know that No. 4 Florida has had a week off to get ready for Saturday’s trip to Knoxville. You also know that No. 10 Auburn, and No. 3 Georgia are coming up in the next three weeks. It’s just something to think about.

A bonus What We Learned:

It’s the SEC. End of discussion: For the first time in history there are five SEC teams ranked in the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll. They are: Georgia (3), Florida (4), LSU (6), Alabama (9), and Auburn (10). Now you know why CBS and ESPN are willing to invest $3 billion over the next 15 years into this league.

The second best conference? That’s easy too. It’s the Big 12 with Oklahoma (2), Missouri (5) and Texas (7).

Bottom line: Either the SEC champion or the Big 12 champion is going to play Southern Cal in the BCS championship game. If both are undefeated or both have one loss, it is going to be a fun argument.

ok, USC is a true Semi-Pro team! Even in the great SEC they would be the cream of the crop. Wow, that’s all that needs to be said! UGA needs to get it togeather and fast.

TB,

  1. Don’t care. I’m a Tech grad/fan.

  2. You’re exactly right. But when we do begin to cut down on the penalties and turnovers, this team could be scary. And it’s young, mostly Fr. & Soph., which bodes well for the future.

  3. Not only is everybody else playing for No. 2, but from the looks of the Trojans, everbody else is truly playing for #2—meaning that USC will beat anybody they play in the BCS NC game.

  4. 3 to 2? Were they playing baseball?

  5. Could be along season for the hillbillies.

Long live Tony Barnhart.

I was at the Auburn-MSU game on Saturday night and to say AU’s offense is bad is insulting to bad offenses all over the country. Their offense is not at all hard to figure out. They have 2 running plays. Either a draw left or a draw right. MSU’s D had it figured out very quickly. On Offense, their OL is decent but they make a lot of mental mistakes. Of the 96 yards in penalties they had, I would say 50-60 came from the OL. Their receivers are not that good but it doesnt help that Chris Todd is a below average QB. Since Burns was not even put into the game doesnt say a lot for the confidence that Tubberville has in him! It is going to take a long time to fix the problems with this offense so look for LSU to win big on Sat as AU wont be able to score. How AU is favored in that game is beyond me!

I don’t care what the polls say, this weekend once again proved the SEC is no better than anyone else. UCLA, the team that beat Tennessee got spanked by BYU, Auburn couldn’t put up more than 3 on lowly Miss. St….and Miss St. needed a penalty to score 2 points, Georgia barely beat a team that got spanked twice in two years by Vanderbilt, Vanderbilt struggled against RICE!, Alabama continues to show it belongs in the same conference as Tulane or Western Kentucky, and Kentucky struggled against Middle Tennessee. So the SEC basically has LSU and Florida. Sorry folks, two good teams do not make a conference far and away the best in the country. That goes for you too Pac-10.

The O line has been a problem at UGA for years. In the early Richt years fans blamed Donnan’s recuits. Then it was the now departed O line coach. What’s the excuse now? Don’t say injuries, that excuse is as thin as the O line.

D line is not much better that’s why no pass rush.

UGA finishes in bottom half of top 10.

For Alabama, the next two weeks will tell the tale. We will beat Arkansas. They are not a very good team right now. If we play well against Georgia in Athens, we have a good chance to win the West. Auburn and LSU have great defenses but their offenses are questionable. LSU has only Charles on offense, no quarterback. And Auburn, their offensive woes have been well chronicled.

As a fan, I can look forward to the championship game. As long as the team doesn’t, we could very well be back in the Dome on December 6.

Ok whatever, what’s your conference? Conference USA, Big East, LOL. Must have forgotten about the mid to lower teams in the SEC beating NC State and Louiville. Oh yeah the 3rd place team in the Western Division dominated the ACC’s first place team. Very selective memory.

Funny thing is that Vandy and South Carolina would be a top 3 team in any other conference.

Of COURSE SoCal will play in the championship game! They just played their only real “game” of the season. The mighty OSU, who has been throttled in the last two bowl games. Who’s worth a flip in the PAC 10? UCLA? AZ State? AZ? Cal? See a trend? Ohio State only plays Penn State and they will lose to them. Michigan? Michigan State? Purdue?

The SEC is like the OK Carral. Everyone is taking shots and it’s done with defense. Even South Carolina, Miss State and Auburn(woeful offenses) will flat out knock you into the netherworld on defense. And we haven’t even inserted LSU, Florida or UGA. THAT’s why the SEC is the cream of the crop. “Mighty” offenses are reduced to squealing school girls when facing an SEC defense. That includes the mighty Trojans. To the rest of the college football world…COME GETCHU SOME ‘O THIS!

I am an Auburn fan and graduate. It pains me to write the following:

Based on what I saw Saturday night, look for LSU to win and win BIG. Mississippi State should have beaten us, but their coaching staff made some poor decisions in the 4th quarter.

Our defense looks pretty good. That’s about the only compliment I can come up with at this point.

The offense looks confused and not particularly motivated. Lester is probably not going to be back for the LSU game, which will be a problem. Our kicker is not looking particularly good at the moment. Tuberville still doesn’t know when to pull a quarterback who is ineffective and give someone else a shot.

It is a mystery to me how Auburn didn’t drop in the polls. Others are obviously seeing things that I don’t see.

I just hope Tuberville has some motivation tucked up his sleeve…

War Eagle, (3-2)??? Sad, very Sad!

78 DAWG, Don’t be a hater, and NO #24 didn’t win the Heismen with that performance saturday. Were you watching any of either game or were you parked in front of the Hooka all day?? #4 for SoCal had 12 carries for 105 yds and numerous catches as well as a few punt returns. If anyone set themselves up in the Heisman watch it is #4 Joe McKnight!

To all SEC fans: I will be the first to admitt that YES I like our chances, but there is a lot of the season left. No I don’t see us losing to anyone along the way to Miami, especially NOT to the golden homers!!! That being said, I do appreciate seeing the comments that acknowledge that Southern Cal has a good team, so do several of the SEC teams without a doubt! I look forward to seeing how the SEC/BIG 12 seasons play out. I certainly hope that SC is playing the SEC champ in Miami as I still feel that OU is not worthy of a spot in the NC game. Look at how they’ve faired the past two trips to Phoenix, and against teams that they were supposed to cream. I still hold out hope that Texas will take care of things in Dallas this year. It’s gonna be fun for sure!! Fight On!! p.s. GOOD BY Shrubs!!!!!! See ya wouldn’t want to be ya!!!!

Dawgs are 3-0. Just win baby. Bottom line for me is that the most obnoxious jerk in the history of college football, the self proclaimed ol’ ball coach is now 1-3 against Mark Richt.

It’s about winning in the SEC. Doesn’t matter how or by how many, just win. The mighty gaytors get on here and laugh at us for “squeaking” by when they quickly forget 2006 when they were a blocked fg away from not being in the title game.

Keep winning and it will all take care of itself.

We don’t need to get too excited anyway, it’s not like we beat some power team……………………

Tony…if both the dawgs and the sooners finish undefeated, which is a big if…UGA is going to the National Championship game. It’s going to be a makeup call for the 2004 Auburn scenario. Do you for a second believe the SEC will put up with something like an undefeated team from their conference being shutout from the title game twice in 4 years? No way, that the Sooners get in there ahead of UGA.

Tony, if you’ll go back and look at my comment from last week. I predicted UGA mistakes and a “nail-biter” of a game. As usual, I was correct but my overall view of UGA for the rest of the season is this: I think we go 7-2 from here on out and make it to a new-years day bowl. Ultimately, the loss of Sturdivant and Owens I think is too much. Our current fullback does NOT impress me as well. And I doubt Southerland will be effective this year when he comes back. We are just not that good up front on either side of the ball and it will cost us a few games. But I’m proud the Dawgs are atleast in the conversation for the NC which is always good for future recruiting.

Normally, the home team has a huge advantage…especially in the SEC. But next Saturday Auburn and Tenn host LSU and UF respectively. If the home teams expect to have a chance, both defenses MUST step up and play their best games of the season. Reason why? If you saw the offenses play last Saturday, you know neither one of them has a chance without help via turnovers or good special teams.

How impressive can USC and OSU be when 10 of their games are against WEAK conference foes?

USC is overrated. Sanchez for the Heisman…what? He’s played in five whole games, only two this year!

Big 12 - overrated as well. Even when they have a comfortable lead (even against weak teams) they leave in their starters to get style points. That’s going to hurt the dawgs because Mark Richt is a classy guy that won’t embarrass his opponents.

The polls are a joke. The voters only see the final score, not the fact that UGA’s third string gave up points in the first two games and the other top 5 teams are leaving in their starters against lesser opponents. And how the hell does USC get more first place votes after a bye?!

It’s ESPN and their unashamed Big 10 and PAC 10 bias…especially for USC.

What a load of crap!

So does ANYONE think that USC or Oklahoma will drop if they have a close game? I don’t. I think the media is setting a bad trend. Not only do you have to win, but you’ve got to blow out every team. Tony, you’re wrong about UGA. If they win them all, they won’t pass Oklahoma or USC if they both go unbeaten. Especially if UGA wins close games while those two continue to curb stomp their overmatched opponents.

  1. Until Southern Cal (they hate to be called that!) and its PAC-10 sisters play a conference championship game, they should not even be allowed for consideration in the BCS title game.

  2. Someone pleeeez tell coach Willie Martinez about a nickel defense. It’s called that because you put in a 5th defensive back in obvious passing situations. Since S. Carolina was OBVIOUSLY going to pass on their last three drives (they OBVIOUSLY could not run the ball all game), then why the heck did we not put in a faster DB to cover their receivers, especially the big tall TE/WR (who is VERY good). Our two LBs Ellerbe and Curran are quick but cannot cover downfield all day. A 5th corner or safety should have been out there! If the pass defense doesn’t get better, Mark Sanchez would throw for 500 yards against GA.

  3. When GA got the ball back on their 20 after the SC fumble and touchback, what in the heck were Bobo and Stafford thinking when they threw that stupid LONG pass on first down? RUN THE CLOCK, YOU DUMMIES! And you do that by running the ball.

  4. Wake up and think about how to best use your weapons … brainstorm a little … push the envelope … think about doing something different, like … put Moreno and King in at the same time!!!!!!!!! Defenses wouldn’t know what to do!

This is not the media or an ESPN bias. Anyone who actually watched the games the past few weeks knows that the polls are about right now based on the current results (except Missouri certainly has anrgument that they too should be ahead of UGA). Look…I love the DAWGS but after three games they certainly do not look like a top 5 team…I think they will eventually but right now they just don’t. Carolina sucks and they out played UGA overall. OSU as always is very over-rated but still a very good and USC killed them. Washington sucks and OU put over 40 on them in THE FIRST HALF! These teams score at will along with played great D. Georgia will be fine but please quit crying about a media bias or ESPN is this or that. If UGA starts playing like they did the last half of ‘07 the rest will take care of itself!

Dawgs have a young and inexperienced O-Line, that we knew going into the season. we also knew that if UGA was going to have a special season then we would have to gut out some ugly wins early on

take away 2 dropped passes (Durham and Samuels) and our win insn’t so ugly

DE are out of shape which doesn’t look good going into ASU (100 degrees in the shade)

Kickers need to get the ball in the end zone but Walsh was a key factor in the game

its great that we have hard hitters in the secondary but incompletions would be better (it would be nice to get some coverage sacks)

(1) Yes, Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldawgs do have some work to do … so what? As I pointed out last week, it’s the third week of a very young season, and, notwithstanding ESPN’s Trojan-gasms, I don’t see any overwhelmingly dominant teams out there. One may mature over the course of the season, but none are dominating yet. If UGA continues to win, and occasionally win ugly, the Dawgs will be fine. Anyone remember the Gators in 2006, and how everyone belittled their every victory as not dominating enough? Apparently SEC competition is plenty tough … give credit where credit is due: the Dawgs survived a tough game.

(2) Georgia Tech played a surprisingly close game with Virginia Tech, but they have a long way to go before they are nationally competitive. The closeness of the GT-VT score says less about the current state of Yellow Jacket football than it does about the Hokies and the ACC generally this season. The ACC will field great teams again, but that will probably take a coaching change in Tallahassee and another top-5 recruiting class in Coral Gables.

(3) Overrated! USC has become ESPN’s latest cause celebre. Enough, already. USC beat a ridiculously overrated Ohio State, a Buckeyes team that barely survived a mediocre MAC team the previous week. Afterall, why shouldn’t USC be expected to stomp OSU? In the last two years, the Gators and LSU Tigers stomped better Buckeye teams than the 2008 version.

(4) I didn’t watch the Auburn-MSU game. I wish I had. The Tigers have been bouncing along without a top-25 offense for the 3 or 4 seasons, relying on their defense to win games, but I doubt they are going to beat many more SEC teams this year by scoring a single field goal. It may still be early in the season, but it’s not too early to take a very hard look at what’s right and wrong with AU’s offense.

(5) Well, I’m a Florida alumnus and fan, so I hope there’s a “beat down” in Tennessee’s near future. On the other hand, the Gators have demonstrated that they have their own set of issues to resolve. Meyer has a pretty darn strong record when he two weeks to prepare … edge: Gators.

(6) Yeah, probably so, but SEC football fans shouldn’t get too cocky about SEC superiority. Georgia has not been a dominant number 1, 2 or 3. Florida’s running game has sputtered. Alabama and Auburn are both over-rated in the current polls; Bama may earn a top-10 ranking before the season is over, but Auburn appears to be headed in the wrong direction.

On the other hand, Vanderbilt is exceeding all expectations——I’m betting the Commodores will upset at least one other of the “Big Boys” before the season is over. Auburn, Georgia, Florida and Alabama——beware!

Auburn will be great next year. this is a complete repeat of 2003 and 2004. Auburn was ranked #6 I believe in the preseason of 2003, only to fall and finnish 8-5.

we all know what happened in 2004

2009 will be the year for auburn, they only have 4 seniors starting this year, and only a few players who are underclassmen (antonio Coleman) are good enough to consider declaring for the draft.

I love it how the delusional SEC fan backs up Alabama’s overrated ranking on the fact that they beat an even more overrated Clemson team..yet…USC beating an overrated Ohio State team doesn’t warrant any consideration for a high ranking. Alabama is lucky they didn’t lose to freakin’ TULANE!!! Hah! I’m not a USC fan, but Alabama would need to get a crowbar to remove their helmets after playing USC. And to my new buddy “Jim”, you have no problem saying “COME GETCHU SOME ‘O THIS!”, but when was the last time an SEC team traveled to a Big Ten stadium? Hmmm? Oh yeah, Alabama was scheduled to play Penn State a few years back…BUT THEY CANCELLED! Too much competition there Bama? We’ll see how Alabama does against Penn State in a couple years…unfortunately, Bama will most likely be breaking in a new head coach after “So-long” Saban finds a better deal at future SEC powerhouse, Vanderbilt. It must be nice to have a week off before the only two ranked opponents on your schedule like USC. Whoopdeedoo, they played a top 5 team. Like that has never been done before. Heck, USC even has a week off AFTER the OSU game. Talk about a schedule “built for a national title run”. How is this even legal?

And before you haters dismiss me as a typical whining UGA fan, think about how the media would treat your own team if it had such a schedule. I submit that you would not like what they would have to say. I submit that virtually any other team besides USC would get crucified for having the kind of schedule that USC has this year. So why does USC get a free pass?

Instead of becoming an ESPN robot like the rest of the media, some of you need to think for yourselves. If the media isn’t going to ask these kind of questions, it is our responsbility as fans to do so.

UGA has much work to do, we will see if not going west for 40 years was wise. ASU lost to UNLV, but their defensive line is full of Californians (USC) rejects, they should be able to give the soft as cotton UGA offensive line problems.Spurrier had the righht ideas, but not the personnel to implement it….Was the UCLA team who lost 59-0 to BYU, the same team who beat the mighty Tenn of the mighty SEC.???..hmmmm

Interesting. USC vaulted to #1 after rolling UVA 52-7 and racking up 558 yards of offense. They were cleary by far and away the undisputed #1 team in the country beyond a shadow of a doubt no questions asked case closed.

Fast forward only two weeks later. UCONN blanks UVA 45-10, racks up 506 yards, and gets 5 votes to barely crack the “other receiving votes” category? What the hell?

I find this very interesting indeed. I’m no conspiracy theorist, but that seems kind of fishy to me.

** SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA looks good so far, But they have’nt played anybody yet, except the worst OHIO STATE team in years, which had to fight hard to beat OHIO UNIVERSITY, AND AN AWFUL VIRGINIA team who got clobbered by UCONN. Reputation is what mainly has them at #1, and the same goes for OKLAHOMA at #2. If GEORGIA keeps winning they will be OK.

USC is good, I agree. But Ohio State losing to a good team is not big news. Did anyone watch them the last two times they played an SEC team for the national championship? If Ohio State is USC’s toughest game then they haven’t yet shown anything.

Am I missing something,? why is it all SEC fans are crying over the relevance of polls after most teams in all conferences have been fattening up on Div 1 AA “cup cakes” ? Talk about polls after these teams have played 7-8 games, and banged heads with some of their real conference foes, and maybe a intersectional game of some consequence.According to all the .com rating services USC or Southern Cal if you prefer, has 9-10 people who will be taken in the first two rounds, nobody else is close.UGA fans tell why you never go west ? I give Tenn some street cred, for going into a hostile atmosphere and playing. UVA played in a New Years bowl, maybe I missed it , but where were Ga Southern & Central Mich on that day? UGA are over-rated as time will tell….

USC has been dominant. UGA has beaten GSU, Central Michigan, and South Carolina. After you’ve soundly defeated a quality team, then you can talk. Please stop the whining.

USC WILL LOSE ONE JUST LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO! They play a VERY light schedule and UGA would look the same way if they played teams such as that. Just hope and pray they both can match up in the national championship. UGA would wipe the plate clean with those pac ten chumps.

1. Georgia still has some work to do - folks, give USC (that is, South Carolina) some credit here. TB is correct in saying that USC will have been one of the top 3 defenses that the Dawgs play this year.

Clearly the OL is, once again, a work in progress, like last year. And, like last year, it will improve each week - count on that.

The absence of a pass rush from the DL is the number one issue, and will likely be on-going.

2. Overcoming turnovers will be a way of life at Georgia Tech this season - turnovers are life with the option - even with great teams. Week to week, GT will be impossible to predict this season.

3. Southern Cal can punch its ticket to the BCS championship game - still to early to give it to the other USC. They do looks awesome though. Weird stuff seems to happen in Oregon…

4. Auburn’s offense had better get better-and fast - call me a skeptic, but I completely agree with Gary Danielson on the fad of the “spread” option. I NEVER thought I would see Auburn spreading the field on the two yard line, and trying to “trick” their way in to the endzone. Pathetic.

5. Tennessee may be headed for a beat down - I disagree TB. Yes, they looked bad against UCLA. Yes, they looked lethargic against UAB. However, they still have enough D to pressure UF and their ONE MAN (sorry, its all Tebow - not Harvin, not any of their RBs) show on offense. I think it will be a 6 - 10 point game.

A bonus What We Learned:

It’s the SEC. End of discussion - Yep. Of course, there are individual teams that are quite good, especially in modern football, but top to bottom its the SEC, then Big 12, several steps lower PAC/Big 10….

That’s not homerism, that current reality.

Tony do you know if USC QB Mark Sanchez is related to former UGA Safety Jeff Sanchez who started with Terry Hogue in 1981 - 1983?

Jeff Sanchez transferred to UGA from the southern california area and I think led the nation in interceptions one year. I see a lot of current players who are sons or nephews of former notable college players. It would indeed be interesting if they are related.

BTW, who cares about the stinking BCS ratings. The Dogs just need to keep winning their games one at a time. If we go 14-0 in the SEC, then we can tell the BCS and all their sportswriters to take that crystal football and shove it up their collective arses.

Tony, I have never seen an ugly SEC win, just ugly losses. SEC wins are beautiful regardless of the score.

Sportscasters and writers can be stupid though. Lou Holtz stated two weeks ago that South Carolina has the best defense in the SEC. The Lamecocks have since lost two games to Vanderbilt and Georgia.

I sometimes think that networks and newspapers require their sports reporters and analysts to get a labotomy as a job requirement.

well, as I said on last week’s post, georgia needed to have a power running game and a pass rush.

we had neither, and thanks to a well placed helmet and a poor throw by another team’s qb, we managed to win. otherwise, sc would have won.

sorry dawg fans, but we aren’t even good enough to be allowed in the same stadium with USC. they are the best - by far, right now.

we couldnt get a sack if we went to the grocery store and asked for one, and we can’t pick up short yardage in a crucial situation. without that, and this schedule, we are toast.

hope we get better as the year goes on…..if not…we can only hope to be “outback” for new year’s day.

2xvandygrad, did you watch the game? Time of possession Georgia over 3 to 1. The offensive line made a few mistakes here and there but not to the point you are making. By the time we play Tennessee we will have a juggernaut of an offense (that is when Super FB phenom blocker Brannan Southerland returns!) By CrimsonWhite

I still think Georgia controls it’s own destiny. The Big 12 title match always knocks off the Big 12 rep.

After they added an eleventh team, I just thought the Big Ten couldn’s count. Now I know they just can’t spell Big T-I-N.

ACC? Please. But watch Clemson. If they get their O-line together, their backfield will really show some stuff.

But playing the SEC schedule will show off Georgia’s flaws and strengths. Even if they don’t make it through this year, they should be stronger next year.

Personally, as a Tide fan, I’m looking for a good show in two weeks and a rematch at the Georgia Dome in December!

  2. UGa should probably be behind Mizzou, Florida and L$U.

  3. The SEC is not the end all, be all. Tenn got beat by a team that just got throttled by BYU. Georgia squeaked by (probably should have lost) a team that got man-handled by Vandy. Aub/Ala/Ark….welcome back to reality.

Pitbull,

Before you downgrade SC defense, look at what they did against some pretty good GA players / Heisman watchlisters Stafford and Moreno.

Not saying Hotz doesn’t say alot just get Marcie May mad on the set, but doubt you will find too many other teams where Stafford and Moreno have lower stats for passing and running #’s this Saturday.

Moreno was very impressive especially with his 2nd efforts to get the all important TD (by the way - this was was the SOLE TD that UGA has scored in the last 2 games vs SC….maybe old man Lou is on to something??)

I watched the Carolina/UGA game and enjoyed it! May I comment that USC is not responsible for Virgina/Ohio State’s football teams? We seldom play 1AA teams, and will travel to play quality teams when possible! USC always plans for The Rose Bowl!! If we win the PAC 10, we get to play in The Rose Bowl! Last season, I would have liked to see UGA play in The Rose Bowl, didn’t happen. That was not USC’s fault! I watch SEC games when possible and appreciate the teams! I do not know if USC will win all their games, and I do not know about the strength of their schedule either. I smile when people talk about ‘Sections’ of this great nation! Look at USC’s roster and you will see quality players from ALL sections of our nation, yep, including Georgia and Florida and New Jersey and Lousianna! USC has got to play someone before I believe they are that good. Better yet don’t be hiding from a southern kicking come January. By Dorsey Hill

First, it is way too early to be worrying about the ‘what if’s’ when it comes to OK and USC and UGA possibly being undefeated at the end of the year and UGA being left out. There are way too many tough games out there to even spend a second of thought on that.

Second, I do think that the pollsters and the press ought to give UGA more credit, not less, for beating a USC team who lost the previous week and likewise should do the same if we win in Tempe.

Does anyone really think that beating a good team that just lost is easier than beating a team that isn’t playing with its entire season riding on the outcome? I think the answer is clearly no but when USC and ASU both lose the week before us it just makes it harder on us nor easier AND we get less credit. That just isn’t fair. I know I would not want to play the loser of Auburn v. LSU a week from Saturday. I’d rather take on the winner.

Of course, why should we expect logic, reasoning or common-sense to enter the picture when it comes to football polls.

Third, please recognize, Dawg fans, that we will be #4 after UF demolishes UT because our win over ASU, if we get one will be meaningless in the eyes of the media morons whereas UF beating UT will be seen as the greatest victory in the history of the SEC because UT beat UAB last week.

And if LSU beats Auburn up good and Missouri looks good vs. mighty Buffalo we may wake up and be #6.

Of course, being the underdog vs. UF and LSU wouldn’t be a bad thing at all would it?

I personally think Tech fans shouldn’t be allowed to talk smack on the football boards until their program doesn’t have to buy advertising on this site to sell tickes in their under-sized football stadium to see their appropriaetly appreciated team play home games.

Having watched the UGA/USC game both in the stands and on TiVO, I think there are factors to consider…

  1. It was STIFLING hot in that stadium. I’m amazed there weren’t more leg cramps then there were, and, frankly, I think the brutal heat and humidity took alot out of both teams.

  2. Georgia’s recievers left points on the field; Stafford looked damn good, and Knowshon’s 124 all-purpose yards were impressive. I also think A.J. Green is going to be a star as the season progresses.

  3. I don’t care what anybody says… USC’s defense, with Jasper Brinkley, is a top-10 defense. Coming out of this game with a win against a stout defense like that will serve Georgia well as the season progresses.

  4. Playing (and winning) an SEC road game in a hostile environment has Georgia better-prepared for the LSU and Auburn games.

  5. Tony Barnhart, the o-line wasn’t blocking well at this point, last season, either; having to move parts around and bring in guys to play a little earlier than anticipated means a maturation process, much like last season. Unlike last season, though, it didn’t cost us a ball game. And it was one game that meant the difference between playing for the BCS title and a pathetic pairing against an overmatched WAC team.

I would like to see how the Trojans or Sooners felt in the fourth quarter playing in the South Carolina soup. If you think about it, UGA Defense dominated early on. Can’t say much for the O line. They are young, and will continue to get better. Ultimately, I suspect the gameplan was ball control, and look at Time of Posession. Who won? #3 is a good place to be. Force fluids in Arizona, boys. Good luck.

Mark May would suck would suck USC ding dong if he could.

What a load of crap!
