Why the voters dropped Georgia to No. 2

Some Georgia fans may be scratching their heads today wondering how you get dropped from No. 1 to No. 2 in the polls after beating somebody (Georgia Southern) by 24. But understand that when the final BCS standings are released on Dec. 7, it doesn’t matter Who’s No. 1. The only thing that matters is Who’s No. 2.

I was a voter in the Associated Press poll for 15 years and I had a standing rule: If I put a team No. 1 at any point during the season, they would stay there as long as they won. There may have been once or twice in 15 years that I went against that rule. I think I moved Auburn to No.1 ahead of Southern Cal in 2004 after the Tigers really got it going.

But not every pollster feels that way. Here are some reasons that could have factored into their reasoning to move Southern Cal ahead of Georgia:

**—Performance on the road counts big. Southern Cal was scary good in winning 52-7 on the road against Virginia, which won nine games a year ago. Remember that in the preseason there were questions about quarterback Mark Sanchez, who suffered a dislocated kneecap in practice. Sanchez was brilliant against a BCS team on the road. That counts for something.

And you can mark this down. If Southern Cal beats Ohio State next week at the Coliseum, the Trojans will be in the BCS championship game on Jan. 8. The only question will be the opponent.

**—It is a weekly poll. Some voters believe that every Sunday, particularly early in the season, you should sit down with the results from the day before in front of a blank sheet of paper and rank the teams based on their performance to date. They believe the previous week’s rankings should not be a major factor. That’s what happened here. A talented Southern Cal team with a healthy Sanchez flew all the way across the country and played very well. Georgia played well at home against a Division I-AA opponent. So for this week, in the voters minds, Southern Cal deserves the No. 1 spot.

**—Georgia’s injuries: Voters watch injuries. They know that LT Trinton Sturdivant) was lost in preseason. They know what DT Jeff Owens was a big-time leader on that Georgia defense. Some teams start to unravel when big injuries start to hit. Some voters will drop teams a notch because of injuries.

**—Next week’s game: With No. 3 Ohio State coming to Southern Cal next week, some voters no doubt feel like the winner of that early mega-game deserves to be No. 1. So they were simply positioning Southern Cal for that game. If Ohio State beats Southern Cal, you can expect the Buckeyes to jump over Georgia into the top spot.

The bottom line is that the human polls are like a beauty contest. It’s in the eye of the beholder and each voter sets his or her standards. Is that fair? Probably not but it’s the system we have, at least for the next six years.

But here’s the bottom line. These same voters know how hard Georgia’s schedule is. If Georgia wins them all, or finishes with one loss as the SEC champions, I believe the Bulldogs will be there in South Florida with the Ohio State-USC winner. Now if the Big 12 champ (Oklahoma or Missouri) is 13-0 and Georgia is 12-1, that’s a different story. That would be an interesting vote.

Give me a freaking break on how “tough” their schedule is!

Who is making it so damn tough?

Who?

Georgia finally in over 30 years is gonna travel west of the Mississippi river to play a football game and their schedule all of a sudden is the toughest in the land? Good grief I want to vomit!

SEC teams have been doing it for decades, I can count around 8 teams that have traveled out west to play a road game this decade but now that the big bad dawgs do it it all of a sudden becomes tough. Get me my barf bag!

You fell to #2 because the voters saw that you aint all your cracked up to be, how about that!!!

I can’t wait till Auburn gets payback for your tweener coachs gay little black out last year.

Hey Ed - Look at the number of teams UGA is scheduled to play who began this season in the top 25 and then compare that number to the other SEC schools schedules and you’ll see why it’s a tougher schedule than anyone else. It really is all about who UGA plays from the Western half of the SEC - no Miss. teams, no Ark. Bama, Aub and LSU are on the schedule - read a paper occasionally!!!

Roswell Ed, please quit drinking all that free coffee while cooking at the waffle house. geez. We ( DAWGS) haven’t proved anything yet, but we are not in the CLUB. WE will have to earn it. Ask Auburn. USC, Florida, Ohio St. are the darlings. On the ESPN post game show Saturday, Georgia, the NUMBER ONE RANKED team in the nation got a 35 second recap. “THE” Ohio St. got over SIX MINUTES of coverage. They played Youngstown for pete’s sake !!!!!!!! These clowns are guaranteed 10- 11 wins a year. If we run the table ( tall order) and don’t play USC, the fix is in worse than we think. Before you light me up, I do think USC is better than us AT THIS TIME. if we progress during the year like all Richt teams do, I’d love to play them.

Whats the matter with you Ed? You claim to be an Auburn fan, but you spend all your time on a UGA blog. I guess you prefer to follow a superior program that consistently wins 10+ games (5 times in 6 yrs) vs one that is happy with 8 or 9 wins as long as they beat Bammer. Remind me…..what was the score of the last 2 Ga/Aub games? Oh, I forgot, Auburn fans consider it a win if the stay within 3 tds of their opponent. Wait, that must be 4 tds since we beat you by 25 last year. Until you beat us on the field, SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you have to take in to account injuries to players when you vote for teams in the polls. It is just plain dumb to wait for teams to lose before dropping them down when you know injuries to players will affect future performance. Polls should be a weekly snapshot of a teams future potential not a snapshot of a team from before the season started when they were at full strength. I think there should be no pre-season poll done they should wait till after the first game.

As long as Stafford keeps throwing like he did on Saturday it will take care of itself. Moreno and King running, Stafford slinging it to the wideouts , UGA will find itself in a position to again be #1 or #2 in the final BCS standings.

Really 2 weeks in, who cares who is number 1 or 2. As a UGA fan it was important to see us at the top going in. It showed that the national media thought that the program had finally arrived.

AUEagle The 1980 Notre Dame team Georgia played for the MNC was 9-1-1 coming into the Sugar Bowl. ND tied Georgia Tech and got waxed by USC 20-3 that year. Regardless, Georgia finished the season unbeaten and untied and were VOTED national champs. That’s the system we had then and the “system” we have now is no better. The “National Championship” in college football is overrated and irrelevant. The only true championship is the SEC title. It is won on the field.

The reality is that the USC deserves to move up to 1 after their performance vs Virginia. The early polls are about expectations and later in the season it’s about performance. Giving up 21 point to a D11 team that played a lot of freshmen does not look great. CMR called off the dogs after being up 38 - 0 but the way the BCS is set up style points are important to the voters. We need to stay in the top 4 to have a chance to play in the championship game.

What if the Big 12 Champion, Southern Cal and Georgia are all undefeated? How would the Pac-10 react with Southern Cal shut out of the National Championship? Would they be shut out even if Georgia had 1 loss?

Just wondering if they would go with the “nuclear” option and try to revert to the preBCS format or just a lot of hemming and hawing and another Congressional hearing?

By Mr. Magoo

Tony, you forgot to mention that the 1st poll was a PRESEASON POLL before anyone played a game. It is more important WHO and HOW and WHERE you played in the 1st game of the season than how good the EXPERTS thought you were going to be before you played a single game!!

By Stredney

September 3, 2008 9:02 AM | Link to this

Do you think maybe poll position changed because the previous poll was PRE-SEASON and no one had played a down when it came out? Some voters might have wanted to actually see the teams in action before locking in their #1 pick? USC is the only one of the “big 5” who played a real team, ergo they get the nod. Once you get to week 5 or so and want to keep your #1 there til they lose, that makes sense, but clearly a 52-7 waxing of UVA on the road outshines a 45-21 win over a 1-AA team at home.

UGA the pride of the SEC? Always have been always will be? Why would you make such a ridiculous claim? OK lets look at the facts.

Georgia..1 National Championship, all-time record .647, 12 conference titles, postseason bowl record 24-16-3

Alabama..12 National Championships, all-time record .706, 25 conference titles, postseason bowl record 31-21-3

LSU……3 National Champioships, all-time record .640, 13 conference titles, postseason bowl record 20-18-1

Florida..2 National Championships, all time record .622, 7 conference titles, postseason bowl record 16-19-0

Tennessee..6 National Championships, all-time record .697, 16 conference titles, postseason bowl record 25-22-0

Auburn..1 National Championship, all-time record .630, 10 conference titles, postseason bowl record 19-13-2

So obviously as far as pride of the SEC Bama is #1 Tenn is #2 and Georgia is about #4 all time SEC.

Just for the hell of it lets do USC and Ohio State.

USC…..7 National Championships, all-time record .721, 37 conference titles, postseason bowl record 30-16-0

HAHA with that gravy a** conference.

Ohio State..7 National Champioships, all-time record .714, 32 Conference titles, postseason bowl record 18-21-0

It is obvious that the SEC is where it’s at….Any more questions?

Every year it’s USC,Ohio State and Oklahoma in the top five and they never have more than 1-2 tough games scheduled and get all the voters love. I’m sick of it. At least this year OSU and USC face each other and that takes one out. I give them credit for that.

Why in the hell is OU ranked above Florida with the Heisman trophy winner and all the talent that they have? OU hasn’t done anything for a while. The polls are biased against the SEC, there’s no doubt about that.

I know this much; if an SEC team goes 12-1 and OU or Mizz goes 13-0, the voters better go with the SEC team because they EARNED that shot for the title by playing several tough games, week in and week out not just one or two spread out over the season.

I will personally start a riot if they hose the SEC again like they did Auburn.

Why do all of these Auburn fans have their lower beak sticking out? Is it because you haven’t won a national title since the 1950s? I know it’s been since 1980 for the Dawgs. so don’t even go there. Before you make a statement about ND’s 1980 record, please check for accuracy. ND was not 7-4, but rather 9-1-1 entering the Sugar Bowl. In fact, they entered their final game of the 1980 season at Southern Cal ranked #2 (lost to SC 20-3) behind the eventual national champs - “the mutts” is what AU Eagle called us. Clearly at this point NO ONE knows out of the top five (or fifty) who is the best team. USC put on the best show against the best competition. Sounds like you MIGHT just be a little bitter about last year too. The black jerseys excited the fans, but most of all the players. It helped gain momentum. Sorry it came at the expense of your precious tigers/eagles/whatever ya’ll are. Actually, I’m not sorry, because it worked out good for us. Rumor has it that Auburn might be planning a fashion statement of their own for that game. So be careful what you say.

What is a “tweener” coach anyways??

Go Dawgs!

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

The drop means nothing. I don’t care if we drop (or are placed) at #5 at this time behind USC, OSU, LSU, and FLA. After all, USC and OSU play each other and one will surely lose, and we play LSU and FLA. If we win, we take care of things. If we don’t win, we’ll have to take whatever. The polls are about as lasting as a fart in the wind.

No problem here with USC jumping us. They look legit. If Georgia take cares of business they will be fine. Thus, why there are numerous Auburn fans on here venting about UGA.

AU finished undefeated and did not get a shot at the national championship (total BS). I would be jaded as well - knowing that if Georgia were to run the table they would likely get a shot at the title.

This topic does not deserve such a huge explanation. UGA dropped because the margin of victory was not high enough and USC looked real darn good. I’m sure that UGA would still be #1 had the offense scored one more time and the defense kept GA Southern out of the end zone one more time. It’s not rocket science. Historically speaking, UGA does not win by a high enough margin to be #1. The voters vote for the teams that win by 50 every week, given the choice.

Roswell Ed - You may want to clock back in to your greeter shift at Wal-Mart before you’re replaced by someone’s grandmother. GA has the toughest schedule in the country period. Yes, we’re making a trip out West to play a top 15 team in the desert heat, but the Dawgs would most likely still have the toughest schedule in the country, since they play AUB,LSU, and FL away. What you people don’t seem to understand is that the injustice isn’t that USC overtook Georgia at the #1 spot. That much should be a given.

The big injustice and part of the reason why the polls are a complete joke is that teams are ranked based on what people THINK they can do instead of what they accomplish. It’s an injustice that Georgia and Ohio State (among many others) are ranked at all.

This is Georgia’s body of work: Zero wins against FBS teams. Explain to me why that deserves a higher ranking than any team out there that beat a Division 1 team last weekend. The body of work from schools like South Carolina, Mizzouri, USC, Utah, ECU, Alabama, Fresno State, Florida and Wake Forest is better.

I’m not saying any of those teams can necessarily beat Georgia or Ohio State. I am saying that there’s no valid reason for ranking a team without a win against a Division 1 team over any team that went up against real competition and got it done.

Teams like Georgia and Ohio State should be completely exempt from the rankings until they beat a team in the same league. Kudos to the voters for Penalizing them for scheduling cupcake games

Funny story: I am a UGA grad and one of my best friends is an Auburn grad. We’ve been going at it every year for quite a while during football season. Last year he revealed to me that he tried to get into UGA as his first choice and was denied, so he settled for Auburn. Obviously he doesn’t have a leg to stand on any more. I think this sums up Auburn fans in general. They are like a little brother who will never be as popular, successful or as good looking as their stud older brother.

Okay, so I get it that we UGA fans look like whiners to a lot of people right now. Apparently Auburn fans have been the best at picking that up(probably a sense they acquired during and after the 2004 season.)

But as far as an Auburn fans saying that they don’t understand why UGA’s schedule gets so much attention, just look at the schedule and it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. I agree, EVERY SEC schedule is brutal, but not this brutal. Let’s just break down the schedules of 3 really good SEC teams in recent years:

1.) 2007 LSU: Played 6 teams in top 25 at time of game…two of those were ranked in top ten at #9 for both. Only 3 teams on that schedule finished in the top 25. The highest finished at #9. Most recent National Champion on schedule: Florida from the previous year.

2.) 2006 Florida: Played 3 teams in the top 25 at game time. It was Tenn, LSU and Auburn. They all finished in top 25 plus Georgia in one poll at least. Two finished in top 10. Most recent National Champion on schedule…LSU from a few years earlier.

3.) The beloved 2004 Auburn team: Played 3 teams in top ten at game time. One of those teams, Georgia, finished in the top ten. No other teams on schedule were in top 25. Most recent National Champion on schedule…LSU from a few years earlier.

4.) Just a light comparison to UGA’s schedule as things will certainly change throughout the season with rankings: UGA plays 7 teams in top 25. That tops all others listed so far. Three in top nine and 4 in top 13. That even beats the 3 top ten teams Auburn played when you consider they play no other top 25 teams. Finally, most recent National Champions on schedule: LSU and Fla from the last two years.

P.S. Florida and LSU played no top 10 teams on the road. Auburn played 1 on the road. Georgia goes to LSU, Auburn and Florida(unless Jacksonville is now in the state of Georgia.). Oh yeah and maybe you don’t think its a big deal, but we also go play a top 15 team in Tempe, Arizona a couple of time zones over.

It’s perfectly fine with me to drop to #2 in thepolls after one week. CMR played a lot of freshmen and began to build depth, which is going to be important as we get into the meat of our schedule. Let’s face facts. USC and Ohio State are the darlings of the media. It doesn’t take too much viewing of ESPN to figure this out. Bias is a weak word for their attitude.

Just more of a reason why there should be a playoffs. As long as humans that are not suiting up control the games the national champion will never be true. I mean really Why is So. Cal playing 12 games this season if their only game is going to be Sept 13. Why not just call it the Rose Bowl. I swear the Pac 10 and Big 10 are really becoming a “fly in the ointment”. You can be a National Champion after the “pollsters” postion you for one game. Last season Georgia gets jumped when they didn’t play and get shut out of the BCS Title game (yea yea they didn’t win the conference, I got that) and now you win and fall. I mean the rules change like a crossdresser. I don’t care about the polls anymore, all th etalk for nothing.

Now To Roswell ED. Yes Georgia has not traveled out side of the South since 1966 trip to the Big House. With Georgia playing Florida is Jax every year they had to give up a home game to travel and the AD Dept just wasn’t comfy with have 5 home games 5 road games and the neutral game. You should know how college football works, everybody wants that return trip and when the schedule added the 12th game that allowed Georgia to schedule schools that would want a return trip and not having to always be the very next season.

WHat kills me is the double standard…You blow someone out and they claim you run up the score. You call the 1st and 2nd team dawgs off when it’s 38-0 and 3rd and 4th string my moms works for UGA players give up 21 MEANININGLESS points and it’s not enough. Richt will never run the score up although I’m in favor of it becasue I rather have people worried about me running up the score than saying I didn’t score enough. I just shake my head about how we got robbed by not seeing UGA and So. Cal last season. BUt who cares about the polls, there’s too much money floating around and that’s more important than getting it right.

I guess this means we will be subjected to an “Orange-Out” or “Orange Day” or Orange-Ade” or maybe even an “Orange-Crush” event at Jordan Hare Stadium. UGA is not a top 5 team, maybe a top 10 to 20 somewhere. UGA should have beaten GA Southern by at least 42 points, not 24. Look at USC, the Gators, Oklahoma, Texas…that is your top teams, they went out and beat a weaker team like a top team should have. Now, if UGA would have beaten Ga Southern say…56 to 7 or so, then you have a questin why they dropped. If UGA wants to stay in the top contender, they need to win this weekend by at least 49 points.

Getting dropped to #2 after the opening weekend was the best thing that could’ve happened to the Dawgs. The target on their backs just got a little smaller and now they can focus on winning their games. They won’t have to answer any more questions from the folks in the press who want to know how they are handling the #1 ranking.

In my opinion losing Owens is going to hurt them more than the loss of Sturdivant, but this is football and a championship caliber team has to overcome their injuries. If the Dawgs win the SEC with no more than one loss, they will be heading to Miami in 2009.

The coaches and players may say otherwise, but this drop in the rankings will light a fire under the Dawgs…look for a whipping of CM this week by a very focused UGA.

Tony, USC played their A-game last week against an average ACC team…big freaking deal. If UGA had played their A-game this past week and left starters in…would have been 66-7 easily. And quite frankly, I think GSU is a team that could finish in the middle of the pack in the ACC this year…hypothetically speaking.

Why do you guys let Roswell Ed get under your skin? Personally, I think he’s hilarious. He’s kinda like an idiot that tells you how qualified Barack is but can’t tell you one accomplishment of his.

Ed looks pretty foolish saying that UGA has a cream puff schedule. I think everyone agrees that UGA’s schedule is the toughest in the country. By far! I’m a Bammer fan that concedes that and if they get through unscathed or with only 1 loss then I would riot myself if they didn’t get into the title game.

Roswell Ed did have one valid criticism that as a Bammer fan I understand where he is coming from. Growing up the one thing I truly loved about Bama football was all the big time intersectional home and home rivalrys we took on. We played USC, Nebraska, Penn State, Ohio St., Ucla, Oklahoma etc. in home and home contests and many others that I won’t go into. That was what built us into a nationally known name that’s still recognized today even if we have sucked the last couple of years.

In fact, all of the SEC teams over the last 20 years have taken on big time BCS conference teams from west of the Mississippi or north of the mason dixon line in home and homes. We’re talking opponents like USC, Texas, Oregon, Texas Tech, Va. Tech, I could go on and on.

The lone holdout is Georgia. In 40 years of watching college football I’ve never seen UGA take on big home and home intersectional contests with teams outside of the immediate southeast. Its what’s kept UGA a good regional program but never a national elite program. UGA took on UCLA at home in 1985 but refused the return trip to L.A. the next year and the Texas game another poster mentioned was a bowl game in which you have no choice.

But I like the fact that Richt recognizes that this has always hurt the UGA program from a national perspective and he is doing the right thing by exposing UGA football to other fans by going to the desert to play a good Ariz. St. team.

Good luck against the Sun devils. Hopefully we will both enter Sept. 27th undefeated and give everyone one of those vintage smash mouth SEC football games. Looking forward to a great game then.

By EmMeThree

September 3, 2008 12:33 PM | Link to this

I think that if you’re going to compare teams between conferences, the only thing you can use as your criteria is national championships. Back before the BCS nonsense, coaches & sportswriters picked the champion each year. The players or the schools had no say in how it turned out. I am a USC fan through and through, but I am also able to be objective in my thinking as well. Especially since the start of the Pete Carroll era, USC has not run from ANYBODY! If you can reasonably and without bias recall some of the recent games in USC’s history games against Auburn (twice), Nebraska (twice), Arkansas (twice), Va Tech, Oklahoma, and since we’re talking SEC primarily, you can add in Virginia last week also. NONE of these games were close, and ALL were USC victories. Let us not forget what happened last year to Tenn when they went out West to Cal last year, and to UCLA this year (with a 3rd-string QB no less). I remember a couple of seasons ago, while Bennedict Patrino coached Louisville, they BEGGED most SEC schools for a game, either home, away, or neutral site only to be rejected by most, with the exception of Georgia. Can you even point out a game USC has played against a lower division school? I know that you were aching for a GA/USC Rose Bowl, as I was, only to get denied by the Rose Bowl committee, but let’s hope all stay status quo for the remainder of the season. Then we will see if USC is all hype or not.

Hey Roswell Ed;

Are you an Auburn grad? If so that explains why you’re so dumb! The key word was “schedule”. Look at Georgia’s schedule - not just who they play but when and where. Obviously, based on history of past performances, Georgia’s is a pretty damn tough schedule. As the year progresses some teams may not live up to expectations while others may be better than originally thought. But as of today, Georgia has a tough, tough schedule. Arizona State is but one game - probably a very difficult one - but it’s only one of many that make their schedule one of the most difficult in all of college football.

By bama_12titles

EmmeThree pretty much has it right. I think just by virtue of their overall sheer dominance, especially against SEC teams and other BCS teams that USC is generally going to get the nod in close voting for No. 1. I don’t see a problem with that. Besides, all you have to be is number 2 to get into the national title game so UGA fans really don’t have much to worry about should they survive their schedule.

The other thing to like about USC is that you will never see them schedule a double aa team. They always play respectable nonconference games and even if Virginia is down this year they are still a bcs conference member and not some double aa team.

I have no problem with this so long as when we play on the road in the SEC and are successful, we get the same treatment. Remember, the ACC is down this year, and UVA is a middle to bottom tier ACC team. If we go on the road and defeat the other USC, ASU, LSU, UF (we’re home ino), all the while beating Alabama & UT at home, then where are we? Do we get the same treatment?

After the Georgia/Georgia Southern game, I knew that we were going to drop in the polls. I just hate it sometimes when Georgia plays to the abilities of their opponents especially in a crucial year like this. I am even surprise the Georgia did not drop by 4 because all the top 5 played teams played like they belong there and we didn’t. We are not Ohio State who year after year are blessed into a BSC championship game only to get humiliated be an SEC team. In order to remain where we are, we need to beat our weaker opponents in a convincing manner; and goes for the game next week against central Michigan. The Georgia Southern game should have been a cake walk. When I saw LSU play against Appalachian, they played like true champions and UGA needs to play like that if we want to remain in the number 2 spot. As for Roswell Ed enough has been said already so I am not going to go down that road. I just wish Auburn and the rest of the SEC teams all the best. GO DAWGS!!!

Finally, the boasting and BS can be reduced from a category 12 to 11. Its hard for the rest of us college fans to get a word in until UGA gets its comeuppance every year but they always get it. It just seems that UGA never gets any respect. I dont know why but they never get it. Could it be because they have not won a nat champ since the Crackers left town or that voters expect more from a team that has had the # 1 RECRUITIN’ class for the past 12 years or they always lose one they are supposed to win or …. I just don’t know

Just think if the mutts actually make it to the bcs title game this year they will have to earn the victory,NOT like in 80 when they beat a 7-4 Notre Dame team to win the title!

Try 9-1-1 you dimwitted cretin.

You tell them Joe Dirt, them dawgs be too dumb to figure they couldnt find a D1 team to play, only 119 to choose from. Yep thats a mighty tough schedule there, whos next USC? OSU? no, no, no its the chipperwahs from central meechigan.

You obviously don’t know the meaning of irony your Alabama white trash. Auburn fans of all people shouldn’t be trash talking another team’s out of conference schedule. Auburn is a laughing stock when it comes to out of conference schedules. That’s why you didn’t get to play for the 2004 BCS Championship. LOL!

ChrisinBama, or whatever the hell your name is, if you are going to post stats, do it right. UGA has won 2 national titles. Auburn sure as hell has won 10 SEC titles either. Auburn has a paltry 6 SEC titles dumbass. Auburn will never measure up to UGA. They don’t even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with UGA.

njdawg,

If you survive your road schedule of Carolina, ASU, LSU, UF, and don’t forget Auburn and a decent Kentucky team and what should be a decent Tech team by year end, and then take care of business at home against UT and my Bammers, then win the conference championship rematch against the west champion, then yeah, you would certainly merit being number 1 in anybody’s book. Its just that its a really tough schedule. If you lose 1 then hopefully you would still get number 2 BCS at the end of the regular season which is all that really matters.

As for the idiot who thinks UGA beat a 7-4 Notre Dame team in 1980 let me say this. Maybe you don’t remember because its been so long since UGA has won a national title. But did you really think a 7-4 team would play in a nat’l title game? ND was 9-1-1 you idiot!

I find it funny to see constant mentions that Auburn fails to travel to play big name opponents.

During the Tommy Tuberville era: 2001 - at Syracuse. Back when Syracuse was a good team. 2002 - at USC. Any questions? Syracuse at home. 2003 - at Georgia Tech. I give UGA credit for playing Tech every year. I think it should go both ways. 2004 - everyone makes fun of playing the Citadel. Does anyone stop to do any research? Auburn was set to play Bowling Green that year. BGSU got a higher offer from Oklahoma and bailed at the last second, leaving Auburn having to scramble to find an opponent. THAT is one of the main differences that year. 2005 - Georgia Tech at home 2006 - Washington State at home. 2007 - Kansas State/South Florida at home. 2008 - at West Virginia. 2009 - West Virginia 2010-11 - home and home with Clemson 2014 - at Kansas State 2017-18 - home and home with Georgia Tech.

Fact is - Auburn tried to schedule home and home series with both Michigan and Notre Dame in recent years, but was turned away. Virginia Tech backed out of series in the mid 1990s. If you’re looking to dump on someone for not traveling - Auburn’s not the one.

To Eric1 and Roswell Ed,

Of course the Bear is dead. Has been for about 25 years now. Why can’t you let that go? We’ve moved on and won sec titles not to mention a nat’l title years after the bear died. I actually think its people like you Auburn fans who need to let the man go and stop living in the past.

We Bammers are certainly proud of the Bear and our storied tradition but that’s all in the past.

We’re all about the future considering Saban is smacking Auburn in instate recruiting every year. Good luck playing us and UGA and everyone else in the future with all those 2 star recruits you keep racking up. We’ll just keep on racking up 4 and 5 star recruits, keep building for the future, and smile and laugh as your program takes a steady descent into the abyss.

You’re about to get a dose of the same physical dominance that Clemson got a dose of. I think we’ll be starting our own little streak against you in a few short months. Roll Tide!

Dropping in the rankings is a blessing for our team. We don’t need the ranking right now at all. All UGA needed is to be ranked high so that if they have a loss they are still contenders for the NC. With the cupcake schedule of USC and OSU one team will be undefeated and then that leaves us with all of the 1 loss teams…p** on the rankings as of now, we just wanted preseason #1…oh, and we got it! As long as UGA gets the same treatment as some of those teams last year got… IF we have two losses and still get to the SEC Championship, then we should still get to the big game like LSU did. Apparently most bloggers were either not at the game or did not watch it on pay per view. Remember it was 38-0 at one point, and that is when CMR called off the preverbial dawgs. CMR is not going to keep any regulars in the game just to p/u some votes via embarassing an instate school (outside of Tech).

Anyone tell me when CK got his first carry, then running for 95 yards. I thought so.

Hate all you want but at least have an understanding about what CMR goals and objectives are for the season. The second have was lined with 2nd and 3rd team guys on defense. Most were freshman who were seeing significant game time for the first time.

Chris in Bama

While I agree with you in that athens Dawg’s comment was over the top, but your stats are just plain wrong. You state the following: Georgia..1 National Championship, all-time record .647, 12 conference titles, postseason bowl record 24-16-3

Alabama..12 National Championships, all-time record .706, 25 conference titles, postseason bowl record 31-21-3

GA has won 2 Consensus National Championships, not 1 as you incorrectly pointed out- 1942 voted # 1 in 7 polls and 1980 in 11 polls. GA has won 14 Conference Championships- not 12 as you incorrectly pointed out- 12 SEC Championships and 2 Southern Conference Championships i.e. 1921, 1927, 1942, 1946, 1948, 1959, 1966, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1982, 2002 and 2005. You stated Georgia’s all time winning percentage is .647 well I ran the numbers and it actually came out to .652 and lastly you said GA’s all time bowl record was 24-16-3 which happens to be the only stat about GA that you got correct. *- Voted # 1 in at least one poll *- Consensus National Champions

Now for Alabama- I have gone through the records from NCAA.org Past Division 1A Football National Championship records and only find 9 legitimate MNC’s for AL as follows- 1925, 1926, 1934*, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1978, 1979, and 1992- I don’t count 1973 as you lost to Norte Dame in the 1974 Orange Bowl and only was voted # 1 in 2 polls. Alabama was voted # 1 in at least one poll on 7 other occasions as follows: 1930, 1941, 1945, 1962, 1966, 1975, and 1977. *In 1934 AL was voted # 1 in 4 polls but Minnesota was the Consensus NC that year and was voted # 1 in 7 polls but I gave AL the benefit of the doubt because AL went unbeaten and untied and Minnesota didn’t, bias on the part of the pollsters. As for conference titles AL has 21 SEC Titles i.e. 1933, 1934, 1937, 1945, 1953, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1989, 1992, and 1999 so I assume they won the other 4 Conference Titles in the Southern Conference.

Both AL and GA have rich traditions in football and are to be proud of their accomplishments as Alabama is the 6th and GA is the 11th winningest programs all time respectively.

UGA would have dropped after the USC-OSU game anyway. We better take care of CMU first. The MAC teams up here throw the ball all over the place. This CMU QB will take it down and run too. I am hoping for another Hawaii type shut down but don’t count on it. Better bring it. Don’t let SC or UT embarrass us again. BAMA and KY will be big challenges again this year too. Damn Vandy has a great RB too. From the 10 second highlights I could catch up here, Stafford looks pretty sharp and it appears that the receivers will be ready. Richt and Bobo held something back and probably will up until the SC game.

Try 9-1-1

And as hard as it is to think about it, we owe Tech for that NC. On the very day we played Fl.and the miracle play of Belue to Lindsay Scott happened,ND was ranked number 1,Tech tied them and allowed us to move up to number 1.We later played ND in the Sugar Bowl and won. Herschel played in the game with a separated shoulder.

Moving Georgia down a spot in the rankings after a win against a weak opponent is fine, as long as the same rule is applied to USC and Ohio State every time they win against one of their many lame opponents. USC’s schedule is a joke, and Ohio State’s is pretty humorous itself.

Do you folks truly believe that you are in the same class as USC, the dominant power in college football over the last decade? When USC goes out, and that offense clicks the way it did against Virginia, the coaches and writers can’t help but remember their amazing teams from the last few years and think to themselves, “Pete Carroll has done it again.”

Also, everyone knows the USC/OSU game will truly decide the trajectory of the BCS outcome, so why not just admit it in the polls.

Tony, you surely stirred up the pot good with this one! I ,as an old time UGA grad, agree with what Bama 12 titles said, UGA never has ventured much out of the South to create any intersectional rivalries. I do recall Bama playing the JoePa;s bunch a few times, and UT seems to play the Left Coast, etc., etc., but we always stay South and too many DIv.1-AA’s. Yes, we did open with Colorado a few years back, and still owe them a return, and did play OK. State last year, but when did we ever play Big 10(or whoever they are), Pac 10, etc., etc. That’s why we don’t get national respect, not because of the score of the game against a 1-AA. USC not only traveled cross country to play a BCS conference team, they took care of business and blew them away. I would vote them #1 as well! Until our AD and the powers to be get it right, UGA will always be a regional team. This year we have a chance to make more noise on the National level if we succeed with that schedule. That will be a tall task to pull off for sure, but get through with maybe only one loss, then we shall see what respect we get!! Until then, play better OOC!!

Longhorn, And USC has one crystal football to show for it. Granted UGA has none but I am not complaining about it. Georgia has not played up to it’s potential when it needed to in major games (UT the past couple of years) and the minor games (SC, Vandy, KY) which has cost us big time. But in the meantime USC has had mental breakdowns (UCLA comes to mind) that has cost them dearly. But for all the hype, they have the one crystal football in the past couple of decades or so. As I mentioned above no problem with moving uGA down a spot either, it would have happened when USC/OSU played anyway as it should. I am proud of the dawgs and our coach and the direction the program is heading, which is up.

The author lost all journalistic credibility when he said in 2004 he moved Auburn ahead of USC in the final week of the poll. This is the same Auburn team that USC shut out, at Auburn the season before. This is the same Auburn team that barely beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl: VT being the team that USC smoked, on the road, to open the season. And this is the same USC team that pounded number 1 Oklahoma in the title game. Even Tommy Tuberville admitted after the Sugar Bowl that he didn’t want to play USC. You SEC fans will never learn…

Big Dawg,

first off I didn’t specify that they were “SEC” conference titles…UGA and Alabama have not always been in the SEC. Secondly Alabama does have 12 National titles if you count “shared” NC’s as all schools do. Admittably there is some controversy about those numbers, some say Alabama shouldn’t claim some that they do. According to what I have found Alabama has had a hand in 17 NC’s. Thirdly you are right I did miss the mark on the UGA national titles they did have 2. Lastly I don’t know how you came up with your statistics but Alabama is the winningest football program in the country. As far as national titles are concerned only Michigan and Oklahoma are close.

Joe H, please read more carefully before you make stupid assumptions Auburn also was not always in the SEC either.

As an Auburn Alumni, I am faithful to my school, but I also have to be rooting for UGA throughout the year. UGA fans NEED for Auburn to do extremely well all year long as well.

Let me explain.

If USC continues to win, they will hold onto the number 1 slot. The only way for either of us to move up is to be undefeated go into our games late in the season. IF UGA beats an undefeated Auburn like they did last year, they have a shot at going to Miami (likewise for Auburn), if they just barely beat an Auburn team that already has a couple of losses, no one will notice.

Therefore, UGA and Auburn fans must have a keen appreciation for each other’s teams until the day we meet. Otherwise, it won’t mean much for a national title.

By the way, I graduated from UGA as well. My PhD was from Auburn and my Masters was from UGA….Auburn was harder! :) WDE and Go DAWGS.

Big Dawg,

let me straighten out something….Alabama has a winning record against ALL other SEC teams….the university claims 12 national titles 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934, 1941, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979 and 1992.

the NCAA records say that they also had 4 more in 1945, 1966, 1975 and 1977.

My statement that Alabama was the winningest in the country was actually an incorrect statement they are 6th as you stated.

The SEC was formerly the Southern conference I believe it was changed in 1931-32 not sure about this tho.

Alabama has 31 bowl victories and 55 bowl appearances which are both NCAA records.

georgia has 5 national championships or at least a part in them but the university officially only claims 1.

prior to the southern conference it was the SIAA until 1921. so both UGA and UA were in three different conferences.

WDE

Sounds like someone is a lil’ bitter about their loss last year. You might want to focus on your offense (28 yds passing in 3 qtrs) a little bit before attacking another team. Maybe that’s the problem…..too focused on everybody else instead of being focused on your own set of issues. Oh and keep tellin’ the recruits that the blackout was gay…….I believe they think otherwise.

” PTC DAWG September 3, 2008 6:11 PM | Link to this I am pretty sure that USC played Idaho (a 1-AA) team just last year. A poster above mentioned they NEVER play a 1-AA team.”

They did beat the Idaho Vandals last year. But they are a WAC team, Div 1A. As of 2007 USC was 1 of 5 teams that has never played a Div 1AA team.

From ESPN.com

Just the facts.

The Pac-10 is now 10-6 versus the SEC and is 6-2 in games played on the West Coast since the BCS Era began in 1998.

Any SEC fan who will not tip his cap to that is simply a big dummy.

That’s not an insult. It’s not an opinion. Those are not words colored by emotion; It’s a statement of fact.

To not acknowledge and defer to the most fundamental measure we have as sports fans is to be either stupid of a full of it.

Whoa!!!!!!!

Look at this picture realistically. USC plays perhaps two or three quality teams at most. They go undefeated. BFD! Ohio State plays one game per season. They win it to reach the title game. BFD! The two untested teams collide with each other. Winner truly a paper champion. An SEC team with two or more defeats which has to face merciless competition every week (more or less) hardened to make mincemeat of either of them. Hell, bring them on back-to-back. It does not matter! That is why Ohio State leads the universe in every statistical category until a REAL team comes along. OSU is not be strong enough to be a second tier SEC squad. I would love to see how USC would emerge after a three-bout gauntlet with Georgia, Florida and LSU. Not 3-0, I can certainly assure all! Any solution? Only a playoff which tyrannical powers-that-be violently oppose. It would knock OSU and their ilk completely OUT of national title picture. That is why all bowl bouts should be South versus north. Which way would pendulum swing? Think about it.

BT Fan….i never said that bama was miami bound. why dont you stop putting words in my mouth dumb a*. I was making a point that UGA isn’t “the pride of the sec”. Get a life! Bama has to prove a whole hell of alot if they expect to get there. Clemson is NOT a weak team…they have the best 2 running backs in the country. Alabama just outright beat them in the trenches. I guess you think that USC can hang with any SEC team in the trenches.

And to the idiot that said “the bear is dead” kiss my a*. I know he is dead and I am tired of people saying “bama fans need to let go of the bear”. It’s not bama fans who hold on to him it’s everybody else who is bitter because he dominated them for so long. there will never be a coach as successful at alabama (not even Saban) ever. But like it or not he is a big part of the heritage and tradition of bama and always will be. And least we aren’t treating a leg humper like he was a damn god. (no pun intended to UGA fans who have brains).

I love every team in the SEC and will always pull for every one of them until of course they play bama. Nothing makes me happier then Florida and LSU winning the last 2 NC’s. I myself hope that georgia will have it’s shot this year BUT they probably wont make it thru the SEC gauntlet unscaved. I think that every SEC team will have at least one loss this year to another SEC team. However the SEC teams that are currently in the top 15 will not lose any out of conference games.

USC could be 0-11 with 12 years olds starting for them the next year and the voters would still have them # 1 ……. the pac 10 is like Georgia playing in the georgia high school system …..they win 2 big games a year and play for #1 …..Ohio State on the other hand can be 0-3 and their still talking about their run at # 1 … Georgia was the best team in the nation in 2007 by far ……and the best team now !……

USC wants to play in the Rose Bowl! You can play in all the other bowl games, it is not the same! You can be ‘National Chmps’, we don’t care! If you do make the mistake of playing us, you will be defeated…soundly! Virginia was a cake walk to us! We played 3 quarterbacks, 6 running backs, and all our traveling squad against a ‘Quality Opponent’! You sent ‘Rocky Top’ out to get spanked by UCLA, hell they are the second best team in Los Angeles! I do wish you luck in the upcoming season! Maybe you can make it to the Rose Bowl! Sad you got screwed out of it last year! GO Dawgs!!!

So how does one initiate a vicious argument in this blog? What kind of question stirs up the most grief and leads to the most vituperative responses by Georgia fans. Is there a fan base that is the most annoying or is it the reminder of either recent or distant histories or simply underappreciated snide remarks about some aspect of Georgia football. I’ll bet all the blogs are the same and the quibbles and vicious arguments are no different?

It’s simple - USC went on the road and beat a BCS team that won 9 games and pounded them by 45 pts. UGA played a cupcake at home and won by 24.

USC will also pound Ohio St. and will run the table and be in the BCS Championship. The actual question is who will play them?

I’m just glad they re-scheduled LSU vs. Troy — it would have been a shame to miss that one. Is Troy an actual college or are they a local JC?

I don’t think Virginia will win a game all season, they aren’t the team from a year ago, any talent they had has graduated and moved on. Am I still impressed that USC traveled 3000 plus miles and did what they did? A little, in my opinion, Ga Southern could beat Virginia, along with several other lower tier teams. Reality check! Anybody can lose a SEC Conference game on any given day or night, no matter what their ranking is at what time of the season, the league is just that tough. I also know that OSU and USC are as deep as any SEC team, but, if they played in the SEC year in and year out, I don’t see them going undefeated and playing for the title on a regular basis. Also no conference game to decide who wins their league on the field. Flying under the radar, Alabama, Auburn, and Oklahoma, look out folks they are for real. Go Dawgs! Love up here at college moma send us some money!

Another high school player qho once committed to USC was #1 in the nation. Can you say overrated? Last night:

15/31

301 yards

6 TDS

4 INTS

Throws were wobbly and made terrible choices. If Carson had any kicking game he would have lost! OVERRATED!!! GOOD JOB USC!

If you listened to the announcers during the USC game or in the recaps later in the day, it’s obvious why USC jumped to No. 1. It’s a beauty contest, and they’re the media darling.

To the Trojan fan who correct me on Idaho, I stand corrected, they’ve been in the WAC a few years.

I guess the part about playing quality teams still stands though, you had no smarty pants come back on that one.

My point stands, until USC leaves the Pac 10, they will have a cup cake schedule.
